The Udea species (currently six) present in the Afrotropical realm are revised based on adults. Phlyctaenia epicoena Meyrick, 1937 syn. nov. is found to be identical with U. ferrugalis (Hübner, 1796). Udea delineatalis (Walker in Melliss 1875) and U. hageni Viette, 1952 are redescribed. In addition, five species of Udea are described as new to science: U. kirinyaga Mally sp. nov. from Mount Kenya in Kenya, U. nicholsae Mally sp. nov., U. meruensis Mally sp. nov. and U. momella Mally sp. nov., all three from Mount Meru in Tanzania, and U. namaquana Karisch & Mally sp. nov. from South Africa. A phylogenetic analysis based on morphological data and mitochondrial COI as well as the nuclear wingless gene, where available, places the new species in the U. ferrugalis species group, which also comprises U. ferrugalis as well as U. delineatalis from the oceanic island of St. Helena. Another island endemic, Udea hageni from Tristan da Cunha, is found to be a member of the U. numeralis group, as sister to U. numeralis. An additional synapomorphic character of the genitalia is recognised for the U. ferrugalis group. Udea infuscalis (Zeller, 1852) and U. melanostictalis (Hampson in Poulton 1916) are misplaced in Udea and transferred to Pyraustinae, as Lirabotys infuscaliscomb. nov. and Achyra melanostictaliscomb. nov., respectively. Adults, tympanic organs, and genitalia of both sexes, where available, are illustrated. A checklist summarises the now eight Afrotropical Udea species.

1.4. Pyralinae Diversity and distribution: 1,300 valid species in 136 genera worldwide, with Asia and especially Africa as centres of diversity (Munroe & Solis 1999, Nuss et al. 2003 – 2022, Léger et al. 2020). In India, 171 species in 47 genera are reported, accounting for about one eighth (13.07%) of the global Pyralinae diversity. Of these genera, 28 genera are represented by single species, 14 genera comprise between two and 10 species, and the five genera Endotricha Zeller, Hypsopygia Hübner, Pyralis Linnaeus, Sacada Walker and Stemmatophora Guenée comprise more than 10 species, with Hypsopygia being the most diverse (Fig. 12). On the Indian subcontinent, Pyralinae are most diverse in the North East India followed by West and North West Himalaya, and Central Himalaya. Very few species are reported from the Trans- and East Himalaya, the Islands, and the Semi-Arid zones. The Desert zone is devoid of Pyralinae (Fig. 13). Adult characters: small to medium-size. The narrow to broad forewings usually have a simple pattern of three well-defined regions, with a usually well-developed discocellular spot, and the ante- and postmedial fasciae sometimes deeply angled from the apex to the forewing base. In the hindwing, Rs runs close together with Sc+R 1, but they never anastomose. Morphologically, Pyralinae are poorly circumscribed, with the short female genitalia, where the corpus bursae barely extends beyond A7, being considered the most defining feature. Several characters, like the well-developed proboscis, the presence of maxillary palpi, the lack of chaetosemata and the R 5 of forewing stalked with R 3+4, are considered plesiomorphic and are also found in other groups outside Pyralinae. With Epipaschiinae, the subfamily shares the two frenulum bristles found in females, the males have one frenulum bristle. The venulae secundae posterior of the tympanal organ are usually absent. Lateral arms arise from the uncus base and extend in a right angle from the dorsoventral uncus axis. The gnathos is usually hook-shaped, and is sometimes reduced or lost, but the gnathos arms are always present (Solis & Mitter 1992, Munroe & Solis 1999, Holloway et al. 2001). Larval characters: have a body without longitudinal dark bands. The subfamily shares with Epipaschiinae the absence of a sclerotised ring around the thoracic or abdominal SD 1 seta. The V1 setae on the A7 are as far apart from each other as on A9 (Solis 1999). Food plants: larvae feed on detritus and dead plant material, like Pyralis manihotalis Guenée and Hypsopygia nigrivitta (Walker), of which the latter can cause considerable damage to thatched roofs. Other species are leaf feeders, like the caterpillars of Vitessa suradeva Moore that feed gregariously in a communal web on leaves of Dichapetalum gelonioides sumatrana (Dichapetalaceae). Some species (e. g. 2.8. Pyraustinae Diversity and distribution: the third largest subfamily in Crambidae and globally comprises 1,274 valid species in 172 genera (Nuss et al. 2003–2022, Léger et al. 2020), with 94 genera (52%) monotypic and only three genera with more than 50 species: Loxostege Hübner, Anania Hübner and Pyrausta Schrank (Nuss et al. 2003–2022). From India, 183 species in 53 genera are reported, representing 14.36% of the global species of Pyraustinae. 24 genera are known through single species only, 26 genera are reported by 10 species or less and three genera are reported by having more than 10 species: Crocidophora Lederer, Pyrausta Shrank, and Pagyda Walker (Fig. 25). The subfamily is most diverse in the North East and central Himalaya, with fewer species in the remainder of the biogeographic zones (Fig. 26). Adult characters: generally, have the triangular forewings, long legs and a somewhat satiny appearance. The antennae are long and sometimes crossing the forewing apex. In both sexes, the third labial palpomere is well developed. The forewing in males often exhibits a retinacular hook. CuP of the forewing is absent or represented by a fold, and 2A and 1A form a large, closed loop. M 1 of the hindwing is often stalked with Rs, and the base of CuA is not pectinate. In the paired tympanal organ, the surface of the fornix tympani is recessed within the tympanic frame. In the genitalia, males have a conical uncus and a tegumen with a distinct sclerotisation pattern. The gnathos is almost rudimentary or lost. The valvae often exhibit a sclerotised process (sella) carrying strong hairs of different shapes (editum). The female genitalia usually exhibit an appendix bursae and a long, coiled ductus bursae. The signum is usually rhombical and broad, with the transverse axis longer than the longitudinal axis, it often exhibits distinct ridges (carinae) (Marion 1952, Solis & Maes 2003, Mally et al. 2019). Larval characters: according to Allyson (1981), last-instar larvae of Pyraustinae exhibit the following diagnostic characters: Posterior angle of frons extending to two-thirds or more of distance to occipital foramen, prothorax with two L setae, D- and SD-bearing pinacula never fused on metathorax, SD 1 bearing pinaculum always present on A2 and A7, distance of V1-V1 larger on A10 than on A9, latter with one L seta, L2 present on A1 to A8, proleg crochets bi- or triordinal, arranged in a complete or incomplete circle. These characters are shared with the sister group of Pyraustinae, the Spilomelinae (Allyson 1984).
