Choroidal neovascular membranes are a rare cause of decreased vision in children with congenital choroidal and optic nerve colobomas. We report on the regression of coloboma-related choroidal neovascular membranes in 2 children treated with intravitreal bevacizumab. Visual acuity remained improved in both children 2 years after the last injection.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal bevacizumab (Avastin) in the treatment of subretinal neovascularization (SRNV) secondary to type 2A idiopathic juxtafoveal telangiectasia (IJT)., Methods: Intravitreal bevacizumab (1.25 mg/0.05 ml) was injected as primary treatment into six eyes of six patients with SRNV due to IJT in this nonrandomized, interventional case series. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was measured and the optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) findings were examined before and after treatment. The patients were followed up for 3-6 months., Results: Pre-injection BCVA measured 20/400 to 20/120 (mean 20/200). After a mean follow-up of 4.2 months, post-injection BCVA measured 20/200 to 20/50 (mean 20/100). At last visit BCVA improved two or more lines in five eyes (83%) and remained the same in one eye (17%). The mean central foveal thickness improved from 263 microm (range, 165 to 393 microm) to 201 microm (range, 126 to 351 microm), representing an average reduction of 62 mum. Only one eye received more than one (2) bevacizumab injections. No significant complications were observed., Conclusions: In this small series, intravitreal bevacizumab appears to be a safe and effective treatment for SRNV secondary to type 2A IJT.

Objectives: To evaluate the short-term visual and anatomical outcomes and safety of intravitreal bevacizumab in subfoveal idiopathic choroidal neovascularization., Methods: Thirty-two eyes of 32 patients with idiopathic choroidal neovascularization received intravitreal bevacizumab (1.25 mg/0.05 mL) in this prospective, noncomparative, interventional case series. Injection was repeated if optical coherence tomography showed intraretinal edema, subretinal fluid, and/or pigment epithelial detachment at a 4-week interval. Ophthalmic evaluations included best-corrected visual acuity, optical coherence tomography, and fundus fluorescein angiography. Patients were followed up for at least 12 weeks., Results: The mean follow-up period was 4.2 months. At 12 weeks, the mean best-corrected visual acuity improved from 20/133 (median, 20/200) to 20/50 (median, 20/40) (P < .001). The mean central macular thickness was reduced from 314.37 microm to 236.84 microm (P < .001). At the final visit, 19 eyes (59%) had an improvement of best-corrected visual acuity of 3 or more lines, 11 eyes (34%) remained stable, and 2 eyes (6%) lost 3 or more lines. No significant ocular or systemic adverse effects were observed., Conclusions: Short-term results suggest that intravitreal bevacizumab is safe and well tolerated in idiopathic choroidal neovascularization. Many patients showed marked improvement in visual acuity and a decrease in central macular thickness. Further evaluation with longer follow-up is needed to confirm long-term efficacy and safety.
