This thesis explores the phenomenon of acknowledgement and perceived motivation in the construction industry. A search on google scholar conducted on February 3, 2021, yields varying amounts of hits on previous research, but there are few relevant articles about acknowledgement of employees and their perceived motivation. This indicates that the industry is underrepresented when it comes to research on acknowledgement and motivation as a topic. This study looks at how employees in the construction industry experience acknowledgement from their leader and how it’s perceived to affect the motivation they have in everyday work. This has been investigated through 12 in-depth interviews of informants from the construction industry. The study show that acknowledgement is a topic the industry has a varying relations to, where some have a conscious relations to it, while others have not thought about the phenomenon and how it can affect everyday life. The study largely presents employees' own experiences of acknowledgement in their own words, to provide an opportunity to understand their experience of the phenomenon. The perceived significance of acknowledgement for employees' motivation turns out to be relatively clear, where the motivation is experienced higher when the feeling of acknowledgement is present. This is reflected in the lack of acknowledgement where the motivation is clearly limited, and clear possible consequences are expressed. The findings support the implications of the study for companies in the construction industry, where acknowledgement turns out to exist to varying degrees, and the positive and negative consequences are clear. The study provides a closer insight into how employees experience acknowledgement in their everyday lives, what they expect and what perceived significance it has for motivation - which can further be reflected in efficiency, job commitment and results.
