We investigate the stability properties for a family of equations introduced by Moffatt to model magnetic relaxation. These models preserve the topology of magnetic streamlines, contain a cubic nonlinearity, and yet have a favorable $L^2$ energy structure. We consider the local and global in time well-posedness of these models and establish a difference between the behavior as $t\to \infty$ with respect to weak and strong norms., Comment: 24 pages

We provide a detailed analysis of the shock formation process for the non-isentropic 2d Euler equations in azimuthal symmetry. We prove that from an open set of smooth and generic initial data, solutions of Euler form a first singularity or gradient blow-up or shock. This first singularity is termed a H\"{o}lder $C^{\frac{1}{3}}$ pre-shock, and our analysis provides the first detailed description of this cusp solution. The novelty of this work relative to [Buckmaster-Drivas-Shkoller-Vicol, 2022] is that we herein consider a much larger class of initial data, allow for a non-constant initial entropy, allow for a non-trivial sub-dominant Riemann variable, and introduce a host of new identities to avoid apparent derivative loss due to entropy gradients. The method of proof is also new and robust, exploring the transversality of the three different characteristic families to transform space derivatives into time derivatives. Our main result provides a fractional series expansion of the Euler solution about the pre-shock, whose coefficients are computed from the initial data.

For every $\alpha < 1/3$, we construct an explicit divergence-free vector field $\mathbf{b}(t,x)$ which is periodic in space and time and belongs to $C^0_t C^{\alpha}_x \cap C^{\alpha}_t C^0_x$ such that the corresponding scalar advection-diffusion equation $$\partial_t \theta^\kappa + \mathbf{b} \cdot \nabla \theta^\kappa - \kappa \Delta \theta^\kappa = 0$$ exhibits anomalous dissipation of scalar variance for arbitrary $H^1$ initial data: $$\limsup_{\kappa \to 0} \int_0^{1} \int_{\mathbb{T}^d} \kappa | \nabla \theta^\kappa (t,x) |^2 \,dx\,dt >0.$$ The vector field is deterministic and has a fractal structure, with periodic shear flows alternating in time between different directions serving as the base fractal. These shear flows are repeatedly inserted at infinitely many scales in suitable Lagrangian coordinates. Using an argument based on ideas from quantitative homogenization, the corresponding advection-diffusion equation with small $\kappa$ is progressively renormalized, one scale at a time, starting from the (very small) length scale determined by the molecular diffusivity up to the macroscopic (unit) scale. At each renormalization step, the effective diffusivity is enhanced by the influence of advection on that scale. By iterating this procedure across many scales, the effective diffusivity on the macroscopic scale is shown to be of order one., Comment: 111 pages. Minor remark added. From an open set of initial data, we construct a family of classical solutions to the 1D nonisentropic compressible Euler equations which form $C^{0,\nu}$ cusps as a first singularity, for any $\nu \in [1/2,1)$. For this range of $\nu$, this is the first result demonstrating the stable formation of such $C^{0,\nu}$ cusp-type singularities, also known as pre-shocks. The proof uses a new formulation of the differentiated Euler equations along the fast acoustic characteristic, and relies on a novel set of $L^p$ energy estimates for all $1 < p < \infty$, which may be of independent interest.

For any positive regularity parameter $\beta < \frac 12$, we construct non-conservative weak solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations which lie in $H^{\beta}$ uniformly in time. In particular, we construct solutions which have an $L^2$-based regularity index \emph{strictly larger} than $\frac 13$, thus deviating from the $H^{\frac{1}{3}}$-regularity corresponding to the Kolmogorov-Obhukov $\frac 53$ power spectrum in the inertial range., Comment: 155 pages, 11 figures, typos corrected

We consider the 2D isentropic compressible Euler equations, with pressure law $p(\rho) = (\sfrac{1}{\gamma}) \rho^\gamma$, with $\gamma >1$. We provide an elementary constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial datum of finite energy, with no vacuum regions, and with {nontrivial vorticity}. We prove that for initial data which has minimum slope $- {\sfrac{1}{ \eps}}$, for $ \eps>0$ taken sufficiently small relative to the $\OO(1)$ amplitude, there exist smooth solutions to the Euler equations which form a shock in time $\OO(\eps)$. The blowup time and location can be explicitly computed and solutions at the blowup time are of cusp-type, with H\"{o}lder $C^ {\sfrac{1}{3}}$ regularity. Our objective is the construction of solutions with inherent $\OO(1)$ vorticity at the shock. As such, rather than perturbing from an irrotational regime, we instead construct solutions with dynamics dominated by purely azimuthal wave motion. We consider homogenous solutions to the Euler equations and use Riemann-type variables to obtain a system of forced transport equations. Using a transformation to modulated self-similar variables and pointwise estimates for the ensuing system of transport equations, we show the global stability, in self-similar time, of a smooth blowup profile., Comment: 39 Pages

The Triple Deck model is a classical high order boundary layer model that has been proposed to describe flow regimes where the Prandtl theory is expected to fail. At first sight the model appears to lose two derivatives through the pressure-displacement relation which links pressure to the tangential slip. In order to overcome this, we split the Triple Deck system into two coupled equations: a Prandtl type system on $\mathbb{H}$ and a Benjamin-Ono type equation on $\mathbb{R}$. This splitting enables us to extract a crucial leading order cancellation at the top of the lower deck. We develop a functional framework to subsequently extend this cancellation into the interior of the lower deck, which enables us to prove the local well-posedness of the model in tangentially real analytic spaces.

We address the inviscid limit for the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space, with initial datum that is analytic only close to the boundary of the domain, and has finite Sobolev regularity in the complement. We prove that for such data the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations converges in the vanishing viscosity limit to the solution of the Euler equation, on a constant time interval., Comment: 36 pages, 1 figure

We address the local well-posedness of the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations. These equations, sometimes called reduced Navier-Stokes/Prandtl, appear as a formal limit of the Navier-Stokes system in thin domains, under certain constraints on the aspect ratio and the Reynolds number. It is known that without any structural assumption on the initial data, real-analyticity is both necessary and sufficient for the local well-posedness of the system. In this paper we prove that for convex initial data, local well-posedness holds under simple Gevrey regularity.

We discuss recent results obtained by the authors, regarding the analysis of the magneto-geostrophic equation: a model proposed by Moffat and Loper to study the geodynamo and turbulence in the Earth's fluid core. We conclude this review by indicating some open problems around the MG equation, that remain to be addressed in the future., 21 pages, 3 figure

We find a new class of data for which the Prandtl boundary layer equations and the hydrostatic Euler equations are locally in time well-posed. In the case of the Prandtl equations, we assume that the initial datum $u_0$ is monotone on a number of intervals (on some strictly increasing on some strictly decreasing) and analytic on the complement and show that the local existence and uniqueness hold. The same is true for the hydrostatic Euler equations except that we assume this for the vorticity $\omega_0=\partial_y u_0$.

In this work we study the long time, inviscid limit of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations near the periodic Couette flow, and in particular, we confirm at the nonlinear level the qualitative behavior predicted by Kelvin's 1887 linear analysis. At high Reynolds number Re, we prove that the solution behaves qualitatively like 2D Euler for times t \lesssim Re^(1/3), and in particular exhibits inviscid damping (e.g. the vorticity weakly approaches a shear flow). For times t \gtrsim Re^(1/3), which is sooner than the natural dissipative time scale O(Re), the viscosity becomes dominant and the streamwise dependence of the vorticity is rapidly eliminated by an enhanced dissipation effect. Afterward, the remaining shear flow decays on very long time scales t \gtrsim Re back to the Couette flow. When properly defined, the dissipative length-scale in this setting is L_D \sim Re^(-1/3), larger than the scale L_D \sim Re^(-1/2) predicted in classical Batchelor-Kraichnan 2D turbulence theory. The class of initial data we study is the sum of a sufficiently smooth function and a small (with respect to Re^(-1)) $L^2$ function.
