This article focuses on the book "The Debt to Pleasure," by John Lanchester. Indeed, the book is ostensibly structured as a galloping gourmet's ramble through the seasons as he discourses over-knowledgeably on all things culinary, studding his lectures with opinionated asides, erudite digressions, inflated self-assessments and discursive recipes that will send more than a few readers to the market and the kitchen. Part of the fun of "The Debt to Pleasure," is savoring how Lanchester, himself a restaurant reviewer and a literary editor, performs ventriloquism.
