The article presents a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that describes an outbreak of pertussis in the Amish community of Kent County, Delaware. Contained religious communities, like Amish communities, are often under-vaccinated against preventable diseases. The pertussis outbreak affected 345 people, primarily preschool-aged children. Cases were identified by self-administered and household interview surveys. Erythromycin was distributed to treat pertussis and prophylaxis was distributed to households where symptomatic persons and their contacts were identified.
