The highly efficient reductive amination of aldehydes with ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2) to form secondary imines is described, as well as the dehydrogenative homocoupling of benzyl amines. Using an air-stable, well-defined PN3-manganese(II) pincer complex as a catalyst precursor, various aldehydes are easily converted directly into secondary imines using NH3 as a nitrogen source under H2 in a one-pot reaction. Importantly, the same catalyst facilitates the dehydrogenative homocoupling of various benzylamines, exclusively forming imine products. These reactions are conducted under very mild conditions, without the addition of any additives, yielding excellent selectivities and high yields of secondary imines in a green manner by minimizing wastes. A dicopper(I,I) complex [Cu 2 (L 1 ) (Cl) 2 ] ( 1 ), bearing a Cu 2 Cl 2 core spanned by a naphthyridine–diimine ligand is synthesized by the treatment of CuCl with 2,7–bis( N –mesitylmethylimino)–1,8–naphthyridine (L 1 ). The catalytic efficacy of 1 is assessed for aerobic oxidative synthesis of imines from alcohols and amines. The title complex is found to be an excellent catalyst for a wide variety of alcohols and amines. Kinetic experiments revealed the involvement of both copper ions in the aerobic oxidation process. Treatment of [Ru 2 (CO) 4 (CH 3 CN) 6 ](BF 4 ) 2 with 3-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-imidazolium bromide in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide at room temperature in dichloromethane affords a Ru II – N -heterocyclic carbene–carbonyl complex [Ru(py-NHC)(CO) 2 Br 2 ] ( 1 ). Catalyst 1 displays diverse substrate scope for phosphine-free acceptorless coupling between alcohols and amines to amides at low catalyst loading.
