A physicomathematical formulation of the coupled gas-dynamic and geometric problem of modeling intrachamber processes and calculating the internal ballistics of nozzleless solid rocket motors is given, and a method and algorithm for solving the problem are developed. The parameters in the forward section of the motor are calculated using averaged unsteady equations of internal ballistics, and the parameters of the grain channel and the exit cone are determined using one-dimensional gas-dynamic equations in a quasi-steady formulation. The software package is verified by calculating the internal ballistics of a motor which is utilized without nozzle cluster and simulates intrachamber processes in a nozzleless solid rocket motor during the full-duration firing. The design features, motor operating parameters, and the composition characteristics influencing the energetics of propellants in nozzleless solid rocket motors are calculated. It is shown that, depending on comparison conditions (identical expansion ratios and identical profiles of the nozzle and exit cone), the specific impulse of nozzleless solid rocket motors (the main energy parameter) is slightly smaller than or nearly comparable to that of conventional solid rocket motors. Exit times for stochastic Ginzburg-Landau classical field theories with two or more coupled classical fields depend on the interval length on which the fields are defined, the potential in which the fields deterministically evolve, and the relative stiffness of the fields themselves. The latter is of particular importance in that physical applications will generally require different relative stiffnesses, but the effect of varying field stiffnesses has not heretofore been studied. In this paper, we explore the complete phase diagram of escape times as they depend on the various problem parameters. In addition to finding a transition in escape rates as the relative stiffness varies, we also observe a critical slowing down of the string method algorithm as criticality is approached. Abstract: This article proposes a new type of discretizations for initial boundary value problems of thermodynamical systems. Based on a combination of finite elements in space and fractional step methods in time, we formulate algorithms that exactly preserve the symmetries and the laws of thermodynamics of the continuum problem. The algorithmic design is based on the GENERIC formalism of irreversible thermodynamics which naturally suggests the split of the evolution operator upon which our fractional step method is based. Although the emphasis of the article is on the generality of the results, as an illustration, a discretization of nonlinear, finite strain, thermoelasticity is presented. In this paper we first prove the equivalence between the system of coupled Volterra gyrostats and a special class of energy-conserving low-order models. We then extend the definition of the classical Volterra gyrostat to include nonlinear feedback, resulting in a class of generalized Volterra gyrostats. Using this new class of gyrostats as a basic building block, we present an algorithm for converting a general class of energy-conserving low-order models that routinely arise in fluid dynamics, turbulence, and atmospheric sciences into a system of coupled generalized Volterra gyrostats with nonlinear feedback. The theory of poroelasticity is extended to include physico-chemical swelling and used to predict the transient responses of normal and degenerate articular cartilage to both chemical and mechanical loading; with emphasis on isolating the influence of the major parameters which govern its deformation. Using a new hybrid element, our mathematical relationships were implemented in a purpose-built poroelastic finite element analysis algorithm (u-π-c fortran program) which was used to resolve the nature of the coupling between the mechanical and chemical responses of cartilage when subjected to ionic transport across its membranous skeleton. Our results demonstrate that one of the roles of the strain-dependent matrix permeability is to limit the rate of transmission of stresses from the fluid to the collagen-proteoglycan solid skeleton in the incipient stages of loading, and that the major contribution of the swelling pressure is that of preventing any excessive deformation of the matrix. The subject of this paper is a classification and discussion of algorithms for solution of nonlinear pure integer programming problems. The survey is organized by characterizing the mathematical form of the nonlinear optimization problems addressed by the various algorithms. If any method can be used without changes to solve mixed integer nonlinear programming problems that fact is mentioned in the description of the algorithm.
