Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is greater than the socle degree of $A$, we show that $A$ is almost strong Lefschetz. This quite modest result is nevertheless arguably the most encompassing so far concerning the strong Lefschetz property for graded codimension three AG algebras.

We study exceptional minuscule Schubert varieties and provide the defining equations of the defining ideals of their intersection with the big open cell. Let $(R,\mathfrak{m}, k)$ be a strictly local normal $k$-domain of positive characteristic and $P$ be a prime divisor on $X=\text{Spec } R$. We study the Galois category of finite covers over $X$ that are at worst tamely ramified over $P$ in the sense of Grothendieck--Murre. Assuming that $(X,P)$ is a purely $F$-regular pair, our main result is that every Galois cover $f \: Y \to X$ in that Galois category satisfies that $\bigl(f^{-1}(P)\bigr)_{\text{red}}$ is a prime divisor. We shall explain why this should be thought as a (partial) generalization of a classical theorem due to S.S.~Abhyankar regarding the \'etale-local structure of tamely ramified covers between normal schemes with respect to a divisor with normal crossings. Additionally, we investigate the formal consequences this result has on the structure of the fundamental group representing the Galois category. We show that the hessian map of quartic plane curves is a birational morphism onto its image, thus bringing new evidence for a very interesting conjecture of Ciro Ciliberto and Giorgio Ottaviani. Our new approach also yields a simpler proof of the similar property for cubic surfaces, which is already known by the work of these two authors.

This paper considers the problems of finite determinacy and approximation of flat analytic maps from germs of real or complex analytic spaces. It is shown that the flatness of analytic maps from germs of real or complex analytic spaces whose local rings are Cohen-Macaulay is finitely determined. Further, it is shown that flat maps from complete intersection and Cohen-Macaulay analytic germs can be arbitrarily closely approximated by algebraic and Nash maps respectively in such a way that the Hilbert-Samuel function of the special fibre is preserved. It is also proved that in the complex case the preservation of the Hilbert-Samuel function implies the preservation of Whitney's tangent cone., Comment: 13 pages. In this paper, we prove that klt singularities are invariant under deformations if the generic fiber is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein. We also obtain a similar result for slc singularities. A tri-linear rational map in dimension three is a rational map $\phi: (\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^1)^3 \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^3$ defined by four tri-linear polynomials without a common factor. If $\phi$ admits an inverse rational map $\phi^{-1}$, it is a tri-linear birational map. In this paper, we address computational and geometric aspects about these transformations. We give a characterization of birationality based on the first syzygies of the entries. More generally, we describe all the possible minimal graded free resolutions of the ideal generated by these entries. With respect to geometry, we show that the set $\mathfrak{Bir}_{(1,1,1)}$ of tri-linear birational maps, up to composition with an automorphism of $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^3$, is a locally closed algebraic subset of the Grassmannian of $4$-dimensional subspaces in the vector space of tri-linear polynomials, and has eight irreducible components. We extend the theory of Koszul modules to the bi-graded case, and prove a vanishing theorem that allows us to show that the Canonical Ribbon Conjecture of Bayer and Eisenbud holds over a field of characteristic zero or at least equal to the Clifford index. Our results confirm a conjecture of Eisenbud and Schreyer regarding the characteristics where the generic statement of Green's conjecture holds. The ACC conjecture for local volumes predicts that the set of local volumes of klt singularities $x\in (X,\Delta)$ satisfies the ACC if the coefficients of $\Delta$ belong to a DCC set. In this paper, we prove the ACC conjecture for local volumes under the assumption that the ambient germ is analytically bounded. We introduce another related conjecture, which predicts the existence of $\delta$-plt blow-ups of a klt singularity whose local volume has a positive lower bound. We show that the latter conjecture also holds when the ambient germ is analytically bounded. We show that the birationality class of a quadric surface bundle over $\mathbb{P}^2$ is determined by its associated cokernel sheaves. As an application, we discuss stable-rationality of very general quadric bundles over $\mathbb{P}^2$ with discriminant curves of fixed degree. In particular, we construct explicit models of these bundles for some discriminant data. Among others, we obtain various birational models of a nodal Gushel-Mukai fourfold, as well as of a cubic fourfold containing a plane. We consider blowups at a general point of weighted projective planes and, more generally, of toric surfaces with Picard number one. We give a unifying construction of negative curves on these blowups such that all previously known families appear as boundary cases of this. The classification consists of two classes of said curves, each depending on two parameters. Every curve in these two classes is algebraically related to other curves in both classes; this allows us to find their defining equations inductively. For each curve in our classification, we consider a family of blowups in which the curve defines an extremal class in the effective cone. We give a complete classification of these blowups into Mori Dream Spaces and non-Mori Dream Spaces. We construct new explicit examples of nonsmoothable Gorenstein algebras with Hilbert function $(1,n,n,1)$. This gives a new infinite family of elementary components in the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of points and solves the cubic case of Iarrobino's conjecture., 18 pages

In this note we provide a formula for the Tjurina number of a join of isolated hypersurface singularities in separated variables. From this we are able to provide a characterization of isolated hypersurface singularities whose difference between the Milnor and Tjurina numbers is less or equal than two arising as the join of isolated hypersurface singularities in separated variables. Also, we are able to provide new upper bounds for the quotient of Milnor and Tjurina numbers of certain join of isolated hypersurface singularities. Finally, we deduce an upper bound for the quotient of Milnor and Tjurina numbers in terms of the singularity index of any isolated hypersurface singularity, not necessarily a join of singularities., 9 pages. For any Kawamata log terminal (klt) singularity and any minimizer of its normalized volume function, we prove that the associated graded ring is always finitely generated, as conjectured by Chi Li. In this paper we give a positive answer to a question of Dimca and Greuel about the quotient between the Milnor and the Tjurina numbers for any irreducible germ of plane curve singularity. This result is based on a closed formula for the minimal Tjurina number of an equisingularity class in terms of the sequence of multiplicities of the strict transform along a resolution. Previously, Ohsugi and Hibi gave a combinatorial description of bipartite graphs $G$ whose toric edge ideal $I_G$ is generated by quadrics, showing that every cycle of $G$ of length at least $6$ must have a chord. This corresponds to the Green-Lazarsfeld condition $\mathbf{N}_1$. In this paper, we investigate the higher syzygies of $I_G$ and give combinatorial descriptions of the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions $\mathbf{N}_p$ of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs for all $p \ge 1$. In particular, we show that $I_G$ is linearly presented (i.e. satisfies condition $\mathbf{N}_2$) if and only if the bipartite complement of $G$ is a tree of diameter at most $3$. The goal of this note is to quantitatively study the behavior of asymptotic syzygies for certain toric surfaces, including Hirzebruch surfaces. In particular, we show that the asymptotic linear syzygies of Hirzebruch surfaces embedded by $\mathcal{O}(d,2)$ conform to Ein, Erman, and Lazarsfeld's normality heuristic. For any odd integer $d$, we give a presentation for the integral Chow ring of the stack $\Mcal_{0}(\Pro^r, d)$, as a quotient of the polynomial ring $\Z[c_1,c_2]$. We describe an efficient set of generators for the ideal of relations, and compute them in generating series form. The paper concludes with explicit computations of some examples for low values of $d$ and $r$, and a conjecture for a minimal set of generators.

Let $A$ be an integral matrix and let $P$ be the convex hull of its columns. By a result of Gelfand, Kaparanov and Zelevinski, the so-called principal $A$-determinant locus is equal to the union of the closures of the discriminant loci of the Laurent polynomials associated to the faces of $P$ that are hypersurfaces. In this short note we show that it is also the straightforward union of all the discriminant loci, i.e. we may include those of higher codimension, and there is no need to take closures. The existence of a Seshadri stratification on an embedded projective variety provides a flat degeneration of the variety to a union of projective toric varieties, called a semi-toric variety. Such a stratification is said to be normal when each irreducible component of the semi-toric variety is a normal toric variety. In this case, we show that a Gr\"obner basis of the defining ideal of the semi-toric variety can be lifted to define the embedded projective variety. In this paper, we study the cohomology of vector bundles on projective space defined as kernels or cokernels of general maps $V_1 \to V_2$, where the $V_i$ are direct sums of line bundles or certain exceptional bundles. In this paper, we exploit some geometric-differential techniques to prove the strong Lefschetz property in degree $1$ for a complete intersection standard Artinian Gorenstein algebra of codimension $6$ presented by quadrics. We prove also some strong Lefschetz properties for the same kind of Artinian algebras in higher codimensions. Moreover, we analyze some loci that come naturally into the picture of "special" Artinian algebras: for them, we give some geometric descriptions and show a connection between the non emptiness of the so-called non-Lefschetz locus in degree $1$ and the "lifting" of a weak Lefschetz property to an algebra from one of its quotients., Comment: 21 pages

Gordan and Noether proved in their fundamental theorem that an hypersurface $X=V(F)\subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ with $n\leq 3$ is a cone if and only if $F$ has vanishing hessian (i.e. the determinant of the Hessian matrix). They also showed that the statement is false if $n\geq 4$, by giving some counterexamples. Since their proof, several others have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we give a new one by using a different perspective which involves the study of standard Artinian Gorenstein $\mathbb{K}$-algebras and the Lefschetz properties. As a further application of our setting, we prove that a standard Artinian Gorenstein algebra $R=\mathbb{K}[x_0,\dots,x_4]/J$ with $J$ generated by a regular sequence of quadrics has the strong Lefschetz property. A variety of minimal degree is one of the basic objects in projective algebraic geometry and has been classified and characterized in many aspects. On the other hand, there are also minimal objects in the category of higher secant varieties, and their algebraic and geometric structures seem to share many similarities with those of varieties of minimal degree. We prove in this paper that higher secant varieties of minimal degree have determinantal presentation of two types, i.e. scroll type and Veronese type. Our result generalizes the del Pezzo-Bertini classification for varieties of minimal degree. Also, as a consequence, we show that for any smooth projective variety having higher secant variety of minimal degree, the embedding line bundle admits a special decomposition into two line bundles as so do those of the well-known examples: varieties of minimal degree, smooth del Pezzo varieties, Segre varieties and 2-Veronese varieties., Comment: 20 pages. Yobuko recently introduced the notion of quasi-$F$-splitting and $F$-split heights, which generalize and quantify the notion of Frobenius-splitting, and proved that $F$-split heights coincide with Artin-Mazur heights for Calabi-Yau varieties. In this paper, we prove Fedder type criteria of quasi-$F$-splittings of complete intersections, and in particular obtain an easy formula to compute Artin-Mazur heights of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. Moreover, as applications, we give explicit examples of quartic K3 surfaces over $\mathbb{F}_{3}$ realizing all the possible Artin-Mazur heights, we provide explicit computations of $F$-split heights for all the rational double points and bielliptic surfaces, and introduce interesting phenomena concerned with inversion of adjunction, fiber products, Fano varieties, and general fibers of fibrations., Comment: 76 page, notation changed

We introduce a relativization of the secant sheaves used by Ein, Green and Lazarsfeld and apply this construction to the study of syzygies of canonical curves. As a first application, we give a simpler proof of Voisin's Theorem for general canonical curves. This completely determines the terms of the minimal free resolution of the coordinate ring of such curves. Secondly, in the case of curves of even genus, we enhance Voisin's Theorem by providing a structure theorem for the last syzygy space, resolving the Geometric Syzygy Conjecture in even genus., Comment: Final version, to appear in Inventiones Math. In this article, we study the weak and strong Lefschetz properties, and the related notion of almost revlex ideal, in the non-Artinian case, proving that several results known in the Artinian case hold also in this more general setting. Hartshorne conjectured that a smooth, codimension c subvariety of n-dimensional projective space must be a complete intersection, whenever c is less than n/3. We prove this in the special case when n is much larger than the degree of the subvariety. Similar results were known in characteristic zero due to Hartshorne, Barth-Van de Ven, and others. Our proof is field independent and employs quite different methods from those previous results, as we connect Hartshorne's Conjecture with the circle of ideas initiated by Ananyan and Hochster in their proof of Stillman's Conjecture., Comment: 5 pages

We construct irreducible complex projective varieties such that the Lyubeznik numbers of their affine cones depend on the choices of projective embeddings. The main ingredient is the recent work of Reichelt-Saito-Walther, where the Lyubeznik numbers are reinterpreted using perverse sheaves and reducible projective varieties with dependent Lyubeznik numbers are constructed.

Matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties arising in the Schubert calculus of the complete flag variety. We give a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties, answering a question of Jenna Rajchgot. We follow her proposed strategy of studying the highest-degree homogeneous parts of Grothendieck polynomials, which we call Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. In addition to the regularity formula, we obtain formulas for the degrees of all Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials and for their leading terms, as well as a complete description of when two Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials agree up to scalar multiple. The degree of the Grothendieck polynomial is a new permutation statistic which we call the Rajchgot index; we develop the properties of Rajchgot index and relate it to major index and to weak order., 36 pages

A quaternary quartic form, a quartic form in four variables, is the dual socle generator of an Artinian Gorenstein ring of codimension and regularity 4. We present a classification of quartic forms in terms of rank and powersum decompositions which corresponds to the classification by the Betti tables of the corresponding Artinian Gorenstein rings. This gives a stratification of the space of quaternary quartic forms which we compare with the Noether-Lefschetz stratification. We discuss various phenomena related to this stratification. We study the geometry of powersum varieties for a general form in each stratum. In particular, we show that the powersum variety $VSP(F,9)$ of a general quartic with singular middle catalecticant is again a quartic surface, thus giving a rational map between two divisors in the space of quartics. Finally, we provide various explicit constructions of general Artinian Gorenstein rings corresponding to each stratum and discuss their lifting to higher dimension. These provide constructions of codimension four varieties, which include canonical surfaces, Calabi-Yau threefolds and Fano fourfolds. In the particular case of quaternary quartics, our results yield answers to questions posed by Geramita, Iarrobino-Kanev, and Reid., 106 pages

In the search of a projective analog of Kunz's theorem and a Frobenius-theoretic analog of Mori--Hartshorne's theorem, we investigate the positivity of the kernel of the Frobenius trace (equivalently, the negativity of the cokernel of the Frobenius endomorphism) on a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. For instance, such kernel is ample for projective spaces. We propose a general definition of mathematical instanton bundle with given charge on any Fano threefold extending the classical definitions on $\mathbb P^3$ and on Fano threefold with cyclic Picard group. We develop an analogue of Eisenbud-Floystad-Schreyer's Tate resolutions for toric varieties. Our construction, which is given by a noncommutative analogue of a Fourier- Mukai transform, works quite generally and provides a new perspective on the relationship between Tate resolutions and Beilinson's resolution of the diagonal. We prove stability of logarithmic tangent sheaves of singular hypersurfaces D of the projective space with constraints on the dimension and degree of the singularities of D. We study the coherent cohomology of generalized flag supervarieties. Our main observation is that these groups are closely related to the free resolutions of (certain generalizations of) determinantal ideals. In the case of super Grassmannians, we completely compute the cohomology of the structure sheaf: it is composed of the singular cohomology of a Grassmannian and the syzygies of a determinantal variety. The majority of the work involves studying the geometry of an analog of the Grothendieck-Springer resolution associated to the super Grassmannian; this takes place in the world of ordinary (non-super) algebraic geometry. Our work gives a conceptual explanation of the result of Pragacz-Weyman that the syzygies of determinantal ideals admit an action of the general linear supergroup. In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the blow-up algebras of the secant varieties of balanced rational normal scrolls. In the first part, we give implicit defining equations of their associated Rees algebras and fiber cones. Consequently, we can tell that the fiber cones are Cohen--Macaulay normal domains. Meanwhile, these fiber cones have rational singularities in characteristic zero, and are $F$-rational in positive characteristic. The Gorensteinness of the fiber cones can also be characterized. In the second part, we compute the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularities and $\mathbf{a}$-invariants of the fiber cones. A complete classification of the non-Ulrich range is given.We prove that this feature is unique in the sense that any other ACM reduced closed subscheme X subset of P-N of dimension n >= 1 belongs to the well-known list of CM-finite or CM-tame varieties, or else it remains CM-wild upon removing Ulrich sheaves.

We define logarithmic tangent sheaves associated with complete intersections in connection with Jacobian syzygies and distributions. We analyse the notions of local freeness, freeness and stability of these sheaves. We carry out a complete study of logarithmic sheaves associated with pencils of quadrics and compute their projective dimension from the classical invariants such as the Segre symbol and new invariants (splitting type and degree vector) designed for the classification of irregular pencils. This leads to a complete classification of free (equivalently, locally free) pencils of quadrics. Finally we produce examples of locally free, non free pencils of surfaces in P3 of any degree k at least 3, answering (in the negative) a question of Calvo-Andrade, Cerveau, Giraldo and Lins Neto about codimension foliations on P3 .

Hermite reciprocity refers to a series of natural isomorphisms involving compositions of symmetric, exterior, and divided powers of the standard $SL_2$-representation. We survey several equivalent constructions of these isomorphisms, as well as their recent applications to Green's Conjecture on syzygies of canonical curves. The most geometric approach to Hermite reciprocity is based on an idea of Voisin to realize certain multilinear constructions cohomologically by working on a Hilbert scheme of points. We explain how in the case of ${\bf P}^1$ this can be reformulated in terms of cohomological properties of Schwarzenberger bundles. We then proceed to study these bundles from several perspectives: We show that their exterior powers have supernatural cohomology, arising as special cases of a construction of Eisenbud and Schreyer. We recover basic properties of secant varieties $\Sigma$ of rational normal curves (normality, Cohen-Macaulayness, rational singularities) by considering their desingularizations via Schwarzenberger bundles, and applying the Kempf-Weyman geometric technique. We show that Hermite reciprocity is equivalent to the self-duality of the unique rank one Ulrich module on the affine cone $\widehat{\Sigma}$ of some secant variety, and we explain how for a Schwarzenberger bundle of rank $k$ and degree $d\ge k$, Hermite reciprocity can be viewed as the unique (up to scaling) non-zero section of $(Sym^k\mathcal{E})(-d+k-1)$., Comment: 26 pages

Projective monomial curves correspond to rings generated by monomials of the same degree in two variables. Such rings always have finite Macaulayfication. We show how to characterize the Buchsbaumness and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these rings by means of their finite Macaulayfication, and we use this method to study the Buchsbaumness and to estimate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of large classes of non-smooth monomial curves in terms of the given monomials., 22 pages

We define non-ordinary instanton bundles on Fano threefolds $X$ extending the notion of (ordinary) instanton bundles. We determine a lower bound for the quantum number of a non-ordinary instanton bundle, i.e. the degree of its second Chern class, showing the existence of such bundles for each admissible value of the quantum number when $i_X\ge 2$ or $i_X=1$, $\mathrm{Pic}(X)$ is cyclic and $X$ is ordinary. In these cases we deal with the component inside the moduli spaces of simple bundles containing the vector bundles we construct and we study their restriction to lines. Finally we give a monadic description of non-ordinary instanton bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ and the smooth quadric studying their loci of jumping lines, when of the expected codimension., 34 pages.
