In this contribution, new data concerning algae, bryophytes, fungi and lichens of the Italian flora are presented. It includes new records and confirmations for the algal genera Acetabularia, Nitella, and Nitellopsis for the bryophyte genera Drepanocladus, Fissidens, Hookeria, and Weissia, the fungal genera Alnicola, Arthonia, Cortinarius, Inocybe, Leucoagaricus, Neohygrocybe, and Puccinia and the lichen genera Bacidina, Chaenotheca, Flavoplaca, Gyalecta, Heterodermia, Rinodina, Scytinium, and Squamarina. The microalgal community associated with Eudendrium racemosum, a marine hydroid widely distributed in the Mediterranean Sea, was studied during an annual cycle, at monthly frequency, in a coastal station of the Ligurian Sea. Microalgae were represented mainly by diatoms, which exhibited higher abundance and biomass values between autumn and spring (max 46,752 cells mm−2 and 1.94 μg C mm−2, respectively), while during summer a significant decrease was observed (min 917 cells mm−2 and 0.013 μg C mm−2). High levels of abundance of filamentous cyanobacteria were observed in summer. Spatial distribution of epibiontic microalgae showed a markedly increasing gradient from the basal to the apical part of hydroid colonies. Considering the growth forms of diatom communities, motile diatoms (mainly small naviculoid taxa) were the most abundant in all the periods. Adnate ( Amphora and Cocconeis spp.) were distributed mainly in the basal and central part of hydroid colonies and showed two peaks (autumn and summer). Erect forms (mainly Tabularia tabulata, Licmophora spp., Cyclophora tenuis) were mainly distributed in the apical part of the colonies and showed their maximum densities in spring–summer. Tube-dwelling ( Berkeleya rutilans, Parlibellus sp.) were observed at low densities throughout the study period, without any significant temporal or spatial variability. Comparing the microalgal communities on marine hydroid to those grown on mimic substrata placed in the sampling station during summer, significantly higher values of abundance were observed in the hydroid, suggesting that microalgae may benefit from the polyp catabolites. Abstract: The spatial and temporal variations of pico-, nano- and microphytoplankton abundance and composition were investigated over a 37 month period, focusing on the ecological role of different size classes of phytoplankton, and on the changes of the community structure that might occur during periods when large mucilage macroaggregates appear. Samples were collected monthly from June 1999 to July 2002 at 11 stations, along three transects covering the northern Adriatic basin. Highest abundances were observed in late-winter/spring for microphytoplankton (mainly diatoms), in spring–summer for nanophytoplankton, and in summer for picophytoplankton. The autotrophic component was more abundant in the summers of 2000 and 2002 (when large mucilage aggregates occurred) than in the summers of 1999 and 2001 (when a massive phenomenon was not observed). This increase was statistically significant for pico-, nano- and, among microphytoplankton, only for dinoflagellates. Blooms of picophytoplankton were often observed at the bottom layer during mucilage summers. The microphytoplankton community during mucilage phenomena was characterized by a species composition (Chaetoceros spp., Cerataulina pelagica, Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima, P. pseudodelicatissima, Cylindrotheca closterium, Dactyliosolen fragilissimus) comparable to that observed in summers without extensive mucilage occurrence. However, some species appeared with significantly higher densities in the summers of 2000 and 2002: Ceratium furca, C. closterium, Oxytoxum spp., Hemiaulus hauckii and Gonyaulax fragilis. Microscopic observation of aggregates revealed that the microphytoplankton species composition inside the aggregates was comparable to that observed in the water column, with an enrichment of opportunistic species such as C. closterium and P. delicatissima. The presence of mucilage aggregates affects the phytoplankton populations in the water column, even when aggregates are at early stages. It seems that there is a mutual relationship between phytoplankton and aggregates, i.e., several diatom and dinoflagellate species may contribute to the aggregate formation and enlargement, but mucilage aggregates themselves may also affect the phytoplankton populations, allowing the development of a rich diatom community and in general enhancing nanophytoplankton growth. The diatom assemblage associated with the Antarctic sponge Mycale acerata was studied through an analysis of the diatom frustule and pigment concentrations in both the sponge ectosome and choanosome. Sponges were sampled weekly from November 2001 to February 2002 at Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, at a depth of 25–35 m. The most abundant diatoms were Porannulus contentus, Fragilariopsis curta, Thalassiosira cf. gracilis, T. perpusilla and Plagiotropis sp. High abundances of P. contentus were found on the sponge ectosome up to the beginning of November, before the ice melted, while later frustules were incorporated inside, indicating that P. contentus lives epibiontically on M. acerata and represents a potential food source for the sponge. The presence of other diatom species was mainly related to the summer phytoplankton bloom. The sponge incorporates diatoms from the water column and utilises them as a food source, accumulating frustules inside the choanosome. The present study was aimed at assessing the performance of different nonliving macrophytes sampled in the Adriatic coast in arsenic(V) sorption. Full factorial experiments were carried out where the main factors were the macrophyte species (brown algae: Cystoseira, Dictyopteris, and Eisenia; green algae: Caulerpa and Ulva; red algae: Ceramium, Gracilaria, and Porphyra; and seagrass: Zostera), biosorbent washing pre-treatment (deionized water, acid pH 2 and basic pH 10), equilibrium pH (in the range 1 to 8), under relatively high (10 mg L) and relatively low (100 μg L) arsenic concentration. All species exhibited significant adsorption. Indeed, they showed a good performance, with the highest observed value of about 1.3 ± 0.1 mg g for the red alga Ceramium and the seagrass Zostera, comparable with those of activated carbon and other low-cost adsorbents reported in the literature under similar experimental conditions. Moreover, red algae known in the literature to be bad cationic metal sorbents showed very good arsenic sorption performance. This work shows that the performance of arsenic biosorption depends on many factors: the different composition and structure of outer layer of the macrophytes, arsenic speciation and functional group availability under different pH, and eventual counter-ion interactions with arseniate. This paper describes the adoption and validation of two innovative methods for the automated count of Ostreopsis spp. concentration in sea water: a molecular assay based on RT-qPCR and an opto-electronic device implementing automatic recognition algorithms. The proposed approaches were tested on samples coming from different locations along the Mediterranean Sea and compared with the standard counting method based on microscopy observation by a taxonomy expert. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of both automatic approaches which provide a valuable tool, mostly cost and time effective, for the establishment of wide pan-Mediterranean monitoring strategies of Ostreopsis spp. blooms. Moreover, the two automatic methods demonstrated the ability to discriminate for the presence of a different but similar species, O. fattorussoi , for which new species-specific qPCR primers were developed.
