A comparative study of growth and nitrate metabolism of Anabaena flos-aquae (Lyng.) Bréb. and Scenedesmus bijugatus var. seriatus Chodat investigated possible mechanisms for the iron-stimulated increases in growth specific for blue-green algae in mixed algal communities. Algae were separately grown in an inorganic medium with varying concentrations of iron and nitrate to determine the effects on each organism. Iron was found to be a limiting nutrient for cultures of both Anabaena and Scenedesmus as determined by chlorophyll a concentrations and cell enumeration. Both iron and nitrate stimulated the specific activity of nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, and glutamine synthetase in Anabaena. Iron enrichment did not increase the activity of the enzymes in Scenedesmus, but inhibited the activity of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase. The stimulation of growth by iron in cells grown under iron limiting conditions was associated with increased nitrate metabolism in Anabaena but not in Scenedesmus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of iron enrichment on algal growth and photosynthesis was investigated using natural assemblages of Lake Erie phytoplankton and axenic cultures of Anabaena, Scenedesmus and Selenastrum. Cell yield and photosynthesis were frequently inhibited in the presence of unchelated iron over the range of 3.6 to 55.7 lam iron as FeCl[sub5] In lake water and in a defined medium with low nutrient concentrations, the degree of inhibition by iron could be reduced by chelating the iron with EDTA or by enriching the cultures with phosphorus. Chemical analyses revealed that the EDTA effectively reduced the ability of the ferric iron to remove soluble phosphorus from the media. EDTA was also observed to reduce rather than enhance iron uptake by axenic cultures of A. flos-aquae. These data support the hypothesis that additions of EDTA to low-nutrient media may sense lo stimulate algal growth in the presence of iron by preventing the iron from altering extracellular concentrations of soluble ions essential for algal metabolism, In medium with high nutrient concentrations, the soluble phosphorus concentration was not appreciably altered by either EDTA-chelated or unchelated iron enrichment (0.9 to 53.7 μM). Instead, the observed enhancement of cell yield by EDTA-chelated iron in nutrient-rich media appeared to be due to the direct effect of iron on intracellular metabolic processes. Algal nutrient enrichment bioassay were conducted between May, 1975 and August 1978 using water samples collected from Chautauqua Lake, New York. Photosynthetic fixation rates of natural phytoplankton assemblages were enhanced by additions of phosphorous and nitrogen although enrichment with other nutrients had no significant stimulatory effect on algal photosynthesis. Whereas phosphorus stimulated in spring and early summer, both nitrogen and phosphorus stimulated in spring and early summers, both nitrogen and phosphorous enhanced photosynthesis in mid-summer and fall. Relative to the effect of phosphorus enrichment, enhancement of photosynthesis by nitrogen during the summer and fall was highest in the northern part of the lake. During the period of ice cover, photosynthesis did not appear to be limited by nutrients in that nutrient additions (P, N, Si, C, Fe, trace metals) did not enhance fixation rates. Observed temporal fluctuations in the response of the algae to P and N correlated with changes in the lake water N:P ratios as well as with temporal changes in dissolved orthophosphate and nitrate-nitrite nitrogen. The N:P ratio decreased drastically in the summer and remained at ca. 10 or less through mid-fall, suggesting that N concentrations were inadequate for the N-fixing phytoplankton. Studies over 3 yr indicate that states of P and N limitation undergo time-space fluctuations that occur in a cyclic pattern in the surface waters of Chautauqua Lake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
