Objective: The purpose of this article is to assess the correspondence between questionnaire reports of dispositional drinking to cope (DTC) and different indices of daily DTC in a sample of nondependent heavy drinkers., Method: Data from electronic diary (ED) records of interpersonal problems, negative affect, coping and drinking were used to examine how questionnaire reports of dispositional DTC corresponded to ED reports of daily DTC and to within-person associations among ED reports of negative affect, interpersonal problems and drinking. In the current study, 98 community-residing heavy drinkers using EDs recorded moods, interpersonal problems, coping attempts, desire to drink and drinking for 21 consecutive days., Results: The findings demonstrate correspondence between questionnaire reports of dispositional DTC and (1) ED reports of daily DTC, (2) intensity of negative mood associated with daily drinking initiation and (3) some between-person differences in within-day prediction of drinking and desire to drink from mood and interpersonal problem ratings. Those reporting higher dispositional DTC were somewhat more likely to drink in response to some negative moods and less likely to drink in response to some positive moods than those reporting relatively lower dispositional DTC, but these findings were mixed., Conclusions: Questionnaire reports of dispositional DTC are at best inconsistently linked to observed within-person associations among daily moods, interpersonal problems and drinking even among heavy drinkers.

Data from 2 daily diary studies of stress, negative affect, and drinking were used to examine the correspondence between global self-reports of drinking to cope (DTC) and within-person stress/negative affect-drinking associations. In Study 1, 83 community-residing drinkers recorded data in nightly booklets on negative events, perceived stress, negative affect, and drinking for 60 consecutive days. In Study 2, 88 community-residing drinkers recorded data on negative events and negative interpersonal exchanges nightly and negative affect and drinking in near-real time on palmtop computers for 30 consecutive days. Both studies showed only modest correspondence between self-reported DTC and between-person differences in within-day, daily, and weekly associations between stress/negative affect and drinking. The findings indicate that individuals who report higher DTC simply may drink across a wider variety of conditions than those who report relatively lower DTC.

The authors used a daily process design to assess alcohol's stress-response dampening (SRD) effects. Moderate to heavy social drinkers (N=100) reported on palmtop computers their alcohol consumption and social context in vivo for 30 days. Participants also reported on their mood states in the late morning and early evening and completed a paper-and-pencil daily diary in which they recorded their negative events. The association between negative events and mood was weaker on days when individuals consumed alcohol prior to the final mood assessment. However, the moderating effect of alcohol on the negative event-mood association was limited to drinking in social situations. Alcohol's SRD effects varied as a function of several between-person risk factors.

We used an experience sampling design to examine the within-person, within-day associations among interpersonal stress, negative affect, and alcohol use, and how these associations varied as a function of alcohol--outcome expectancies (AOEs), avoidance coping style, sex, and neuroticism. Ninety-eight community adult drinkers who wanted to reduce their alcohol consumption (49 women) reported for 21 days on their interpersonal stress and affect (three times per day), and alcohol use (as it occurred) using hand-held computers. Several individual difference factors interacted with daytime interpersonal stress and afternoon negative affect in predicting nighttime alcohol use, with individuals high in careless unconcern AOEs or low in impairment AOEs demonstrating stronger positive associations between daytime stress and negative affect and nighttime drinking. Daytime drinking and individual difference factors also interacted in predicting nighttime interpersonal stress, with individuals high in careless unconcern AOEs or those low in impairment AOEs or avoidance coping style demonstrating the strongest positive associations between daytime drinking and nighttime stress. We examined the within--person, daily associations between the desirability of anticipated outcomes from drinking and positive and negative social, academic, and health--related events, affective states and actual drinking. Each afternoon for 21 days, 124 undergraduates reported their alcohol use from the previous evening, their events and affect that day, and the desirability of anticipated outcomes from drinking for the upcoming evening. Results indicated greater variation in desirability ratings within--persons compared to between--persons, and that desirability was higher on days characterized by higher positive affect, negative affect, and negative social events and lower on days characterized by reports of negative health concerns. Nighttime alcohol use was greater on days when anticipated outcomes from drinking were rated as more desirable. Abstract: A 30-day diary study examined the relations among trait self-esteem, negative romantic relationship interactions, and alcohol consumption. Multilevel analyses revealed that people with low trait self-esteem (compared with people with high trait self-esteem) drank more on days when they experienced more negative relationship interactions with their romantic partners. In addition, daily increases in state self-esteem buffered people with low trait self-esteem from the desire to drink in response to negative romantic relationship interactions. In contrast, participants with high and low self-esteem both decreased their drinking in response to negative non-romantic relationship events, but people with low self-esteem decreased their drinking less. These findings suggest that people with low trait self-esteem may drink as a way to regulate unfulfilled needs for acceptance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Two brief (3-session) interventions were evaluated in a community sample of 98 non-dependent heavy drinking adults. Three weeks of intensive daily monitoring of drinking using a hand-held computer were completed before and after a 3-week intervention phase in which participants were randomly assigned to a brief coping skills, brief motivational enhancement, or waiting list condition. Waiting list participants drank more before, during, and after the brief intervention than brief intervention subjects, but all participants demonstrated reductions in drinking amount and frequency. No differences in drinking were found between the two brief interventions. The potential value of intensive daily monitoring as a tool for non-alcohol dependent individuals interested in reducing their drinking was considered. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The authors explored a multidimensional view of drinking, whereby social and solitary drinking represent distinct behaviors associated with positive and negative experiences, respectively. Using daily diary methodology and multilevel analytic strategy, the authors examined, over 30 days, the within-person association of negative and positive experiences and alcohol consumption in different contexts and focused on interpersonal experiences. On days with more negative interpersonal experiences, participants engaged in more solitary drinking (i.e., drinking at home and alone), whereas on days with more positive interpersonal experiences they drank more in social contexts. The authors also demonstrated that individuals high on neuroticism drank more in solitary contexts on days with more negative interpersonal experiences, relative to those with lower neuroticism. The authors used a daily diary methodology to examine over 60 days how the within-person associations among event stress, alcohol consumption, and desire to drink varied as a function of gender, positive and negative alcohol-outcome expectancies, and avoidant coping in a sample of 88 regular drinkers. Multilevel regression analyses indicated that men who more strongly anticipated positive outcomes or a sense of carelessness from drinking drank relatively more on stressful days compared with low-stress days. Similar results were found predicting desire to drink. Men who anticipated greater impairment from drinking drank relatively less on stressful days. In general, these effects did not hold for women. Little evidence was found for the predicted effects for avoidant coping style, and some results showed that avoidant coping style buffered the exacerbating effects of careless unconcern expectancies.
