This study aims to analyze how good and efficient the low-cost carriers' connectivity is at their major airports by studying one of the largest low-cost carriers in the world, AirAsia Group. Weighted Connectivity Ratio is used in the calculation, applied with slight modifications to suit the operations of low-cost carriers at their airports. The results reveal that some airlines have very good connectivity, even when it is compared to the connectivity of several big full-service carriers in Europe. This research brings a novelty in the form of an analysis of connectivity of low-cost carriers, considering that most of the previous research only focused on the connectivity of full-service carriers that implement a hub-and-spoke strategy. This is important because low-cost carriers are currently present with a very rapid growth as an alternative flight option that is more affordable for passengers in addition to full-service carriers that have previously dominated the aviation market. Air carriers shall not readily relinquish their held flight slots. In cases where the historical flight slot pool cannot be easily altered, a pressing need arises for an allocation method that can efficiently utilize the incremental resources of these time slots. This paper presents an integer planning model to address the efficient allocation of incremental airport time slot resources. The model considers the capacity of key resource nodes and flight waveforms as constraints to maximize the total incremental slots. Moreover, it considers the adaptation of strategic and tactical optimization. After conducting a case study using Beijing Capital International Airport for verification, the proposed model effectively reduces potential operational delays by 66.27% while adding 366 to 397-time slots. Aviation turbulence is a well-known meteorological hazard that can result in aviation mishaps. This study aims to identify the characteristics of aviation turbulence. Hence, we proposed a method to determine the turbulence from the altitude change data obtained from the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and spatial temperature difference (STD) of Band 13 Himawari-8 in this research. We employed these methods to investigate turbulence in the cruising phase in the flight route from Soekarno Hatta Airport Jakarta (CGK) to Juanda Airport Surabaya (SUB) and vice versa (VV) at Java Island, Indonesia, in July, and December 2019. The result indicates that in July, high-frequency vertical turbulence occurred at 31000 feet. While in December took place at a height of 33000 feet. Horizontally, the turbulence occurs in northern central Java Island. In July, non-convective turbulence was preeminent, whereas convective turbulence was prevalent in December. The dominant STD surrounding the turbulence event is between 0.4° and 0.5°. In the future, this technique will be used to monitor the distribution of turbulence in Indonesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

User-generated online content can be an alternative data source for investigating airport perceived service quality, which effectively accompaniments as well as cross-validates the traditional service quality questionnaires. This research aims to identify the main themes shared in online reviews by airport passengers, then, distinguish key concepts for passengers' distractors as well as enhancers of passenger satisfaction. The research uses mixed methods, qualitative (i.e. narratives) and quantitative (i.e. computer) approaches, to investigate the main components of passengers' airport experiences in the top five largest Scandinavian airports. A content analysis of 704 passenger's reviews shared on an online content through web site was implemented to identify key themes as well as satisfiers/dissatisfiers regarding airports' service perception. The analyses demonstrated nine themes in descriptions of airport travel experiences. These are "staff", "immigration", "gate", "shops", "terminal", "lounge", "luggage", "screen" and "restaurants". The outcomes of this research posit beneficial insights into airport passengers' overall experiences according to social media platform information and facilitate the identification of the main themes linked with distractors and enhancers. Airports are seen as a crucial component of infrastructure in the construction of modern cities in the Middle East, where aviation is recognized as a top priority in their development strategy. While the airline industry in the Middle has been investigated, there are no studies that explored the region's successful global aviation hubs from a national competitive advantage perspective. Therefore, this paper examines the macro environmental elements affecting a nation's competitiveness in the aviation industry using a mixed-methods approach, including Porter's notion of national competitive advantage and expert views. The analysis shows that while macro environmental factors such as geographical advantage, physical and intellectual infrastructure, and business attractiveness are important for a successful aviation development, they are not necessarily required to guarantee a hub status unless the governments are devoted to developing the sector. Safety Management Systems (SMS) in the aviation industry are an increasingly important aspect of identifying hazards and managing the associated risks. While SMS has become commonplace and is often a regulatory requirement for air carriers, it remains voluntary for many other aviation service providers, such as airports. Over the past decade, commercial Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operations near airports have significantly increased along with the development of Advanced Air Mobility operations. Airports face new and emerging safety challenges. However, safety is a precursor for public acceptance and proliferation of these next-generation aviation technologies. Safety practitioners consider SMS a key enabler in ensuring the safety of the National Airspace System and may assist airports in addressing these emerging hazards and risks. This research explored the current state of SMS at airports and their incorporation of UAS hazards and risks. This research utilized a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods, which included an extensive literature review and a survey of airport stakeholders. Research results suggest a need for further development and adoption of SMS at airports, including further maturation of UAS safety practices along with education and training. This study may assist airport stakeholders and regulators with further developing robust safety and risk management practices that support the safety of the next generation of aviation operations. Purpose: The United States airline industry is a highly competitive industry. Airlines could benefit from satisfied and loyal customers. This study investigates the effect of personality traits of airline consumers on satisfaction and loyalty in the U.S. airline market. Design/methodology: An online survey was constructed to measure the "big five" personality traits, service quality, satisfaction, and loyalty. Data were collected using Amazon Mechanical Turk, resulting in 624 respondents. Factor analysis was conducted using principal component extraction and varimax rotation. Findings: The results show that age, education, employment, service quality, extraversion and agreeableness are found to be significant and influence satisfaction. When examining the moderation effects of personality on the service quality and satisfaction relationship, extraversion is influential. Gender, education, and satisfaction are found to be significant and influence loyalty. Personality was found to be non-significant when examining both direct and moderation effects on loyalty. Originality/value: This research examined the big-five personality traits, often not investigated in airline satisfaction and loyalty studies. This study offers several managerial insights and theoretical implications that practitioners and researchers who are interested in airline satisfaction and loyalty might use. This paper aims at exploring the efficiency of regional airports, whose traffic is highly dependent on touristic flows, and the impact of some external factors such as low-cost airlines, charter air traffic and seasonality. The analysis focuses on the airport market in Greece within the time period from 2010 to 2016. A bootstrapped data envelopment analysis model is developed and the Malmquist Productivity Index is computed to estimate the total productivity change between 2010 and 2016. This is followed by a tobit regression model to estimate the impact of the external factors on the airport efficiency scores. Our findings indicate that the considered factors significantly affect airport efficiency. More specifically, the low-cost airlines and charter flights contribute to increasing airport efficiency, while the seasonality might be seen as an obstacle to improving airport efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this research goes beyond any previous study in the Greek airport market and could be useful for several practitioners, such as airlines, airport operators and hotel businesses, as well as policy-makers and authorities. To enhance the accuracy of performance analysis of regional airline network, this study applies complex network theory and Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm to investigate the topology of regional airline network, constructs node importance index system, and clusters 161 airport nodes of regional airline network. Besides, entropy power method and approximating ideal solution method (TOPSIS) is applied to comprehensively evaluate the importance of airport nodes and complete the classification of nodes and identification of key points; adopt network efficiency, maximum connectivity subgraph and network connectivity as vulnerability measurement indexes, and observe the changes of vulnerability indexes of key nodes under deliberate attacks and 137 nodes under random attacks. The results demonstrate that the decreasing trend of the maximum connectivity subgraph indicator is slower and the decreasing trend of the network efficiency and connectivity indicators is faster when the critical nodes of the regional airline network are deliberately attacked. Besides, the decreasing trend of the network efficiency indicator is faster and the decreasing trend of the maximum connectivity subgraph indicator is slower when the nodes of four different categories are randomly attacked. Aviation is paramount in contemporary medium and long-distance transport, and airports are essential junctions in the modern globalised economy. The presence of airports is determinative concerning local regions or areas, and a specific methodology demonstrates its impact on the economy. It allows estimating the direct, indirect, and consequent multiplicative effect of the presence of airports on employment and income more accurately. Thus, it numerically describes the economic significance of certain airports as well. It is not only about quantifying the significant impact of an airport on the local economy; it should also be the extent to which an airline's presence impacts regional and local economic processes. Besides analysing general methodological issues concerning the impact analysis of airports, this study aims to evaluate the impact of a particular low-cost airline's flights on the local economy. The basis of our study is the Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport (CLJ) of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and its dominant airline Wizz Air, which has a distinct impact because of its distance from large international airports. Thus, we can conclude that as a net result at the regional level, the presence of Wizz Air's Cluj-Napoca flights generates over 4,000 person employment impact besides about 54 million euro income impact on the local economy. Unlike airports in many other countries which have been corporatized or privatized, nearly all U.S. airports continue to be operated by the public sector. They are subject to a system of economic regulation that provides little incentive to control costs or allocate capital efficiently. Yet, despite its apparent shortcomings, the current system has persisted over several decades. This Article explains the persistence of the current U.S. system of airport economic regulation based on price theory, regulatory economics, and public choice principles. It offers supporting empirical evidence for this equilibrium and identifies factors that might lead to a different outcome. Elected officials benefit from the current system because it permits them to bolster public employment, influence large contract awards, and provide financial support for local causes without relying on tax dollars. Airlines tolerate the current system, despite its inefficiencies, because airport costs are not a significant part of the airlines’ cost structure. Also, while airlines have only a limited influence on airport spending decisions at most airports, they have a greater influence on those decisions at airports that are most important to their competitive position. Airlines have more influence at airports with a high proportion of connecting passengers that the airlines can credibly threaten to re-route via other hub airports. Finally, airline executives are risk-averse and fear that the alternative they wind up with could be worse than the status quo. Airports are one of the important infrastructures that provide connection between the air side and the land side. Many airline companies carry out ground operations, usually by ground handling companies. This ground operation which airlines perform is sometimes carried out during the turnaround time. The turnaround time of the aircraft is the minimum time required for ground operation of the next flight after parking in an aircraft's parking position. In this study, the ground operation of an airline company was handled before covid-19 and after covid-19 with the help of the arena simulation program. As a result of the research, it is seen that the airline company was successful both before covid-19 and after covid-19 based on the time it took for a narrow-bodied aircraft at the airport it uses as a hub. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of decision model innovation (DMI), set on the decision-making support for the customers, on customer satisfaction and the firm's competitive productivity (FCP). Design/methodology/approach: This study operationalizes the concept of DMI by developing a decision support journey (DSJ) model for the airport industry, using the case of Zurich Airport and its ecosystem. This paper then explores how this DSJ impacts the FCP of Zurich Airport. Findings: This study finds that applying DMI shows potential to improve talent management, resource management and corporate culture, leading to a higher FCP. By centralizing the decision-making process of its customer and decision support, executives gain essential insights into the actual needs of their customers. This enables firms to adapt their products and services to the actual needs of the customer, which leads to higher performance. Research limitations/implications: This study explores the complementarity between DMI and FCP, exploring how operationalizing the concept through DSJ impacts FCP elements, including talent management, resource management and overall corporate culture. This extends extant work on improving non-aeronautical revenues in dynamic environments within airport ecosystems as a converging industry setting. Practical implications: Existing airport digital applications providing minimal support should be expanded to provide an interaction and exchange platform for airport ecosystem players and customers. This paper finds that the firm adopting DMI in the airport/airline industry can set up a win-win situation to achieve competitive productivity by providing decision-making support and valuable insights to its customers. Originality/value: This study is among the first to apply DMI toward improving FCP in the airport industry. It treats airports as an ecosystem of converging industries that can benefit by incorporating customer-focused digitally-enabled solutions to improve decision-making and customer satisfaction. Present-day airline industry is quite a competitive field and crew scheduling represents one of the crucial problems due to significant impact on the airline's cost. The crew scheduling problem is based on the assignment of crew members to operate different tasks of route. The main goal of this paper is to provide an analysis and a solution to one of the biggest problems detected on a small airport in the Serbia - the problem of ground crew scheduling. The paper presents the main characteristics, goals and limitations of a real-life problem identified at this small airport. In order to solve the problem, we developed a dynamic discrete simulation model. The model is developed in a spreadsheet environment of Microsoft Excel. Some of the main limitations found in the development of the model are strong constraints and multiple goals. The aviation industry is of great importance for a globally connected economy. Customer satisfaction with airlines and airport performance is considerably influenced by how much flights are delayed. But how should the delay be quantified with thousands of flights for each airport and airline? Here, we present a statistical analysis of arrival delays at several UK airports between 2018 and 2020. We establish a procedure to compare both mean delay and extreme events among airlines and airports, identifying a power-law decay of large delays. Furthermore, we note drastic changes in plane delay statistics during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigates the impacts of airport activities on regional economies using annual data on all regions and 22 airports in New Zealand from 2001 to 2016. In addition to fixed effects estimation, the system generalized method of moments approach and the dynamic common correlated effects estimator are used to account for cross-sectional dependence, cross-regional heterogeneity and feedback effects. The study shows clear and consistent evidence that aviation activities positively affect regional economies, and that it is beneficial for policy-makers and airport owners in a region to promote aviation activities. In this work, we explore the possibility of using a heterogeneous Susceptible- Infected-Susceptible SIS spreading process on an airline network to model airport congestion contagion with the objective to reproduce airport vulnerability. We derive the vulnerability of each airport from the US Airport Network data as the congestion probability of each airport. In order to capture diverse flight features between airports, e.g. frequency and duration, we construct three types of airline networks. The infection rate of each link in the SIS spreading process is proportional to its corresponding weight in the underlying airline network constructed. The recovery rate of each node is also heterogeneous, dependent on its node strength in the underlying airline network, which is the total weight of the links incident to the node. Such heterogeneous recovery rate is motivated by the fact that large airports may recover fast from congestion due to their well-equipped infrastructures. The nodal infection probability in the meta-stable state is used as a prediction of the vulnerability of the corresponding airport. We illustrate that our model could reproduce the distribution of nodal vulnerability and rank the airports in vulnerability evidently better than the SIS model whose recovery rate is homogeneous. The vulnerability is the largest at airports whose strength in the airline network is neither too large nor too small. This phenomenon can be captured by our heterogeneous model, but not the homogeneous model where a node with a larger strength has a higher infection probability. This explains partially the out-performance of the heterogeneous model. This proposed congestion contagion model may shed lights on the development of strategies to identify vulnerable airports and to mitigate global congestion by e.g. congestion reduction at selected airports. Purpose: This viewpoint paper provides insights and actions as to how destinations and airports need to be aligned in post-COVID-19 resumption. This paper aims to inform those working in airports and tourism boards about how to deal with airlines and support connectivity and route development post-COVID-19. Design/methodology/approach: This paper provides a practical viewpoint based on working with airlines and tourism boards as part of consultancy and advisory development. Findings: This paper offers practical suggestions on how airlines, airports and tourism boards can work together to support air connectivity and tourism development. The history of aviation has been deeply significant to the history of the United States. Aviation itself represents a significant theme in our history, while also playing a key role in other significant themes, from communication and commerce to World War II and space exploration. This article examines the archaeological record around aviation, with a focus on the United States Southwest. I address historic background, types of historic aviation properties archaeologists might encounter, guidelines for evaluating these properties for the National Register of Historic Places, and future directions. Time series of meteorological parameters at ten Greek airports since 1955 indicated the level of climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean area. Using this data, take-off performance was analysed for the DHC-8-400—a typical short range turboprop airliner, and the A320, a typical medium scale turbofan airliner. For airports with longer runways, a steady but unimportant increase in take-off distances was found. For airports with shorter runways, the results indicate a steady reduction in available payload. At the most extreme case, results show that for an Airbus A320, operating from the, relatively short, 1511m runway at Chios Airport, the required reduction in payload would be equivalent to 38 passengers with their luggage, or fuel for 700 nautical miles (1300 km) per flight, for the period between the A320's entry to service in 1988 and 2017. These results indicate that for airports where aeroplane maximum take-off mass is a performance limited function of runway length, and where minimum temperatures have increased and/or mean headwind components decreased, climate change has already had a marked impact on the economic activity in the airline industry. Similar analyses could be usefully carried out for other runway-length–limited airports, which may often include island airports. It is also noted that previous research has only considered temperature effects, and not wind effects. Wind effects in this study are less significant than temperature, but nonetheless have an effect on both field performance noise and pollution nuisance around airports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study publishes results of tests with regard to determination of the aircraft positioning accuracy by means of the GPS navigation in aviation. The research exploits the mathematical model of the linear combination "Ionosphere-Free" in order to designate the coordinates of an aircraft. The research uses the actual GPS code observations, recorded by a satellite receiver mounted in the Cessna 172, at the time of the experiment for the EPDE military aerodrome in Dęblin. The computations of the position of the Cessna 172 aircraft for the linear combination "Ionosphere-Free" were made in the APS Toolbox v.1.0.0. programme. Within evaluation of accuracy of the GPS positioning in aviation, the determined coordinates of the aircraft Cessna 172 from the APS programme were compared to an accurate reference position from the solution derived by the PPP measurement technique. In the research, the authors obtained an average positioning accuracy of approximately 5 m in the geocentric XYZ coordinates and approximately 4 m in the ellipsoidal BLh coordinates. In addition, the 3D-error parameter is lower than 7 m for the XYZ geocentric coordinates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with the issue of functional regionalisation on the global level and uses information on air transport movements as the regionalisation criterion. The analysis is based on analogies regarding the use of traditional methods, scale, and character of input information (flows) by which functional regions are usually defined. The paper tries to verify whether these analogies are viable and whether the approach can be used to assess the spatial organisation of air transport on the global level. In order to do so, the paper discusses some aspects of the development of air transport and then defines functional airline regions and their prominent cores (i.e., hub airports). The regionalisation algorithm uses a database containing more than 48,000 routes and connecting almost 1,000 airports. The results are discussed in relation to issues concerning the spatial concentration of world air transport, the spatial patterns of global functional airline regions, and the classification of world airline hubs.
