The article discusses the technology issue, operational considerations, and cost trades associated with the concepts of replacing current national surveillance radars with a single network of multimission phased-array radar (MPAR) in the U.S. According to the authors, MPAR network could technically and economically effective replacement option for radar networks including WSR-88D of Next-Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) and Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR). It was assumed that an operational radar network remains a critical observing system for the nation. Furthermore, MPAR will allow the future weather network in addition to provide high-quality aircraft surveillance services at small cost.
