The phytotoxic risk of ambient air pollution to local vegetation was assessed in Selangor State, Malaysia. The AOT40 value was calculated by means of the continuously monitored daily maximum concentration and the local diurnal pattern of O3. Together with minor risks associated with the levels of NO2 and SO2, the study found that the monthly AOT40 values in these peri-urban sites were consistently over 1.0 ppm.h, which is well in exceedance of the given European critical level. Linking the O3 level to actual agricultural crop production in Selangor State also indicated that the extent of yield losses could have ranged from 1.6 to 5.0% (by weight) in 2000. Despite a number of uncertainties, the study showed a simple but useful methodological framework for phytotoxic risk assessment with a limited data set, which could contribute to appropriate policy discussion and countermeasures in countries under similar conditions.

The present experiment was done to evaluate the impact of ambient air pollution on carrot (Dacus carota var. Pusa Kesar) plants using open top chambers (OTCs) ventilated with ambient (NFCs) or charcoal filtered air (FCs) at a suburban site of Varanasi, India. Various morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of the plants were studied at different growth stages. Air monitoring data clearly showed high concentrations of SO2, NO2 and O3 in the ambient air of study site. SO2 and NO2 concentrations were higher during early growth stages of carrot, whereas O3 concentration was highest during later growth stages. Filtration of air has caused significant reductions in all the three pollutant concentrations in FCs as compared to NFCs. Plants growing in FCs showed significantly higher photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency and variable fluorescence as compared to plants growing in NFCs. Protein content also showed a similar pattern, however, lipid peroxidation, ascorbic acid content and peroxidase activity were higher in plants growing in NFCs as compared to FCs. Shoot length, number of leaves per plant, leaf area and root and shoot weight increased significantly upon filtration of ambient air. Total nitrogen decreased significantly in root, but increased significantly in shoot of plants grown in NFCs. Total P, Mg, Ca and K contents decreased significantly in plants grown in NFCs as compared to FCs. The individual pollutant concentrations were below threshold for plant injury, but the combined effect of all the three seems to act synergistically in causing greater adverse impact on dry weight and physiology of carrot plants. The study clearly indicates that air pollutants are high enough in the ambient air to cause significant unfavorable impact on carrot plants. The work further supports the usefulness of OTCs for assessing air pollution damage under field conditions in developing countries.

Malaysian rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars MR84 and MR185 were grown in greenhouse chambers and exposed to four different levels of ozone from 28th August, 2001 to 22nd January, 2002. Four ozone levels were selected in close relation to the Malaysian peri-urban ambient level (approximately 30 ppb, 8 hr mean), the Malaysian guideline level (approximately 60 ppb) and possible future higher ozone levels (approximately 90 ppb). Both morphological and physiological parameters showed distinctive impacts of ozone treatments. The plants treated with the highest ozone concentration showed different morphological development, probably induced by severe foliar injury and physiological adaptation of the plants to the ozone stress. The physiological measurements revealed a high sensitivity at the early and late vegetative stages. It was concluded that MR84, which was found to be physiologically sensitive, responded to ozone relatively quickly and altered its morphology to compensate for effects on growth and yield, while MR185, found to be physiologically insensitive, responded to ozone stress slowly which resulted in more severe impacts on growth and yield parameters. Slight growth stimulation was observed at the lowest (30 ppb) ozone level for MR185, whilst negative impacts on growth occurred at both of the higher ozone levels. The study provided useful insights into the earlier findings of an open-top chamber filtration study on the same cultivars in the field at a peri-urban site in Malaysia. The present study proved that yield could be reduced substantially when other parameters associated with grain yield were affected, which was accompanied by increasing yellowing of leaves and premature senescence.
