A powdery mildew disease of variegated ivy (Hedera canariensis L. var. azorica) was observed on the Tyrrhenian coast in Tuscany (Italy) in spring 1998. Symptoms began as small, nearly circular reddish spots that later enlarged and coalesced. The hyaline mycelium produced abundant, ellipsoid conidia in long chains that ranged from 20 to 40 μm in length and from 12 to 25 μm in width. Cleistothecia were globose (100 to 120 μm diameter), dark brown (when mature) with a basal ring of mycelioid appendages, and contained several (up to 20) ovate asci, each generally containing two ascospores. Ascospores were hyaline, one-celled, ellipsoid (20 to 35 μm in length and 10 to 20 μm in width). The morphological characteristics of this fungus were those given for Erysiphe cichoracearum DC. Infection also was found on English ivy (Hedera helix L.). It is reported that this species is, occasionally, subject to powdery mildew caused by E. cichoracearum (1). Conidia from infected leaves were shaken onto leaves of melon (Cucumis melo L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus [Thunb.] Matsum. & Nakai), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) and variegated and English ivy. After 7 days, the disease was observed on cucumber, melon, watermelon, tobacco, and variegated ivy. Examination confirmed that test plants were infected with E. cichoracearum. In 1995, powdery mildew was observed on commercial greenhousegrown Aster ericoides L. from La Plata, Buenos Aires Province. The disease affected about 95% of the growers. Mildew first appeared as white circular patches on the adaxial surface of leaves. As disease progressed, the abaxial surface of leaves, petioles, stems, and calyces were covered by cottony masses of mycelium and conidia, and basal leaves later wilted and died. Young plants (4 to 5 leaves) through flowering plants were affected. Conidia were ovoid-cylindrical, often slightly constricted at the ends, and were produced in chains on unbranched conidiophores. Conidia lacked fibrosin bodies and ranged from 30 to 41 μm × 10 to 19 μm. Long unbranched germ tubes were formed from the ends of conidia. The morphological characteristics of the fungus fit those described for Erysiphe cichoracearum DC (1). In addition, the perfect stage was found on older tissues. Subglobose, dark brown cleistothecia (105 to 210 μm in diameter) with a basal ring of myceloid appendages were observed. Cleistothecia contained multiple ellipsoid asci (48 to 69 μm × 30 to 37 μm) with two hyaline, one-celled, ellipsoid ascospores (22 to 26 μm × 11 to 15 μm). Pathogenicity was tested by pressing diseased leaves onto healthy leaves of aster cv. Sunset and incubating plants in humidity chambers for 48 h. The powdery mildew that developed was morphologically identical to the original isolate. This is the first report of E. cichoracearum on heath aster in Argentina. Reference: (1) H. J. Boesewinkel. Creeping or Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.) is a perennial weed of Eurasian origin that arrived in North America as early as the 1700s (3). Spreading by seeds and rhizomes, it is now widely distributed in Canada, Alaska, and 40 other states. It is apparently absent from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina (1). Powdery mildew is common on C. arvense in Europe, but it has never been observed in North America (4). In Europe and Asia, powdery mildew of C. arvense is caused by any one of the following fungi: Leveillula taurica, two species of Sphaerotheca, and varieties of Erysiphe cichoracearum and E. mayorii. Specimens of C. arvense infected with powdery mildew (deposited in the U.S. National Fungus Collections as BPI 843471) were collected in the fall of 2003 near Moscow, ID and in two areas in Oregon (the canyon of the Grande Ronde River and near the base of the Wallowa Mountains). Mycelium and cleistothecia were observed on stems and upper and lower surfaces of leaves. The mean diameter of the cleistothecia was 122 (±11.6) μm. Basally inserted, mycelioid appendages were hyaline or brown and varied considerably in length, but most were in the range of 80 to 120 μm. Asci averaged 58 (±5.5) μm × 35 (±4.1) μm in length and width, respectively. Each ascus bore two ascospores averaging 23 (±1.4) μm × 14 (±1.7) μm. Conidia averaged 30 (±3.0) μm × 14 (±0.8) μm. The specimens fit the description of E. cichoracearum DC. (2). Because the length/breadth ratio of conidia is greater than 2, the specimens could be further diagnosed as E. cichoracearum var. cichoracearum (2). Also noteworthy was the presence of the hyperparasitic Ampelomyces quisqualis Ces. ex Schlechtend. E. cichoracearum is thought to be a cosmopolitan powdery mildew of broad host range, but this concept is difficult to reconcile with the absence of mildew on North American populations of C. arvense for more than 200 years. In October 2003, potato plants in three fields (cv. Desiree, Satina, Midas, and Mondial) in Lancaster, California exhibited symptoms and signs of powdery mildew. Disease symptoms were most severe on cvs. Desiree and Santina. Disease expression was greater along sprinkler lines and in localized areas from which the disease spread to surrounding plants. Severely affected plants began collapsing just prior to water cutoff. Early symptoms comprise small dark areas on the adaxial surface of leaves, along the veins, and at the petioles. Dark lesions consisting of mycelia and conidiophores were also visible on the main stems of affected plants. As the disease progressed, leaves were covered by a gray powdery fungal mass, and older leaves became necrotic. Conidial chains arising from the hyaline, epiphytic mycelia consisted of two to eight conidia. The cylindric to doliform conidia measured 16.8 to 22.8 μm wide (mean = 19.2, standard error = 0.36, N = 30) × 28.8 to 45.6 μm long (mean = 32.4, standard error = 0.75, N = 30). No cleistothecia were observed. Identification of the causal agent as Golovinomyces cichoracearum (synonyms G. orontii and Erysiphe cichoracearum) based on morphology was confirmed by internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Conidia were washed off the affected leaves, concentrated by filtration and centrifugation, and sonicated to release genomic DNA. PCR was performed on the sonicated conidia with primers ITS4 and ITS5 (2), and the resulting amplicon was purified and sequenced. BLAST analysis of the ITS sequence revealed a 99% homology to E. cichoracearum from an Ambrosia sp. (GenBank Accession No. AF011292). Pathogenicity was confirmed on potato seedlings cv. Red La Soda. Inoculations were performed twice on six plants (three pots) each time. A sterile brush was used to transfer conidia from the affected leaves to seedlings consisting of two to three fully expanded leaves. A plastic bag was placed around each pot containing two seedlings for 1 to 2 days and then removed. Noninoculated controls were stroked with a sterile brush, placed in a plastic bag for 1 to 2 days, and kept in the greenhouse on a separate bench. Two control plants were included for each inoculation. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at approximately 25 to 28°C and 40 to 60% relative humidity. After 7 days, dark spots were visible on the leaves of all inoculated plants, and conidiophores with conidia identical to those of the isolate used as the inoculum source were apparent after 10 days. The controls showed no disease symptoms or signs. To our knowledge, this is the first report of powdery mildew caused by G. cichoracearum on potato in California. Common sage, Salvia officinalis L., is produced primarily in greenhouses for the culinary herb market in Argentina. Since 2003 during autumn and winter, powdery mildew symptoms have been repeatedly observed on potted common sage plants in commercial greenhouses located on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. The average disease incidence during this period was 85 to 90%. Circular, white, powdery patches developed on leaf surfaces and stems. Heavily infected leaves turned brown and died. Hyaline mycelium and nonlobed appressoria were observed. Conidiophores were simple with straight foot cells measuring 53.0 to 80.0 × 10.0 to 12.3 μm. Conidia were aseptate, hyaline, cylindrical to ovoid, measured 33.0 to 40.5 × 15.0 to 18.5 μm, did not contain fibrosine bodies, and were produced in chains. Cleistothecia were not observed. The pathogen was identified as Erysiphe cichoracearum DC (1). Pathogenicity was confirmed by gently pressing leaves displaying abundant sporulation onto the adaxial surface of healthy leaves. After 10 to 12 days, typical signs and symptoms of powdery mildew appeared on all inoculated plants. Pathogenicity tests were conducted in a greenhouse at 20 to 23°C and included 10 sage plants (five inoculated and five noninoculated). The experiment was performed twice, each time with the same result. Control plants did not show any signs or symptoms. E. cichoracearum DC was previously reported in the United States on Salvia sp. (2).To our knowledge, this is the first report of an outbreak of powdery mildew caused by E. cichoracearun on potted common sage plants produced in greenhouses in Argentina. References: (1) H. J. During July 2011, a severe powdery mildew outbreak was recorded in pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) fields in economically poor areas in the Neelum Valley (Leswa, Mir Pura, Jura, Kundal Shahi, and Bela). Disease symptoms included grayish white circular to irregular patches consisting of epiphytic mycelia and conidia on both surfaces of the leaves of infected vines. Fungal mycelia and conidiophores were also visible in white powdery patches on the main stems, leaves, and petioles of affected plants. Leaves became necrotic with age. Powdery mildew symptoms were more severe on pumpkin vines located in the shade, and severely affected vines collapsed. A voucher specimen (IR00027) has been deposited in First Fungal Culture Bank of the Pakistan (FCBP), Institute of Agriculture Sciences, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. For morphological observation, a clear tape strip was used to remove fungal tissue from infected leaves. The tape was mounted on microscope slides with water and examined with a light microscope (2). Conidiophores were unbranched, cylindrical, erect and arose singly on hyphal cells, 110 to 200 × 6 to 12 μm, composed of a foot cell and three to eight barrel-shaped conidia formed in chains with a sinuate edge, followed with a basal septum at the branching point or slightly displaced from the mycelium. Foot cells were 50 to 80 × 6 to 12 μm, and slightly swollen with constriction at the base. Conidia were cylindrical to doliiform, 30 to 50 × 14 to 20 μm and produced in chains. The length/breadth ratio of the conidia was 1.8 to 2.6. Fibrosin bodies were absent in both conidiophores and conidia. No cleistothecia were observed. Identification of the causal agent as Golovinomyces cichoracearum (DC.) V.P. Heluta (synonym Erysiphe cichoracearum) was based on morphology (1). Pathogenicity was determined using field-infected plant leaves transported to a greenhouse. Fresh conidia of field isolates of G. cichoracearum were transferred by a sterile brush from the affected leaves to fully expanded four to five healthy leaves of three 40-day-old vines. For the control, three vines were stroked with a clean sterile brush and control plants were placed 100 m away from the inoculated plants. For disease development 20°C and 80% relative humidity was maintained in the greenhouse. A plastic sheet was placed around each vine for a week and removed later. Inoculated vines developed visible white spots of powdery mildew on the leaves after 10 days in the greenhouse, whereas control plants remained asymptomatic. Fungal colony and conidial morphology on the leaves of inoculated plants were as described above. Previously, G. cichoracearum has been reported on other cucurbits (3) in the plains of Pakistan. To our knowledge, this is the first report of occurrence of G. cichoracearum as a causal agent of powdery mildew on pumpkin in Neelum Valley, Azad Kashmir. References: (1) U. Braun. Beih. Certain plant-derived agents (PDA) which could induce resistance in okra leaves against powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) and biochemical changes in treated leaves were investigated during 2011 and 2012 growing seasons. At the two-leaf old, four- and eight-week leaves of the greenhouse-grown okra plants were sprayed with either PDA two days before inoculation with conidia. Among all tested PDA, neem seed oil (NSO) caused the highest protection, followed by jojoba oil (JO) and extract of Reynoutria sachalinensis. Moreover, levels of total protein, activity of peroxidase, polyphenyloxidase and chitinase and total phenols content of treated two-leaf old highly increased after application of NSO and JO, but not by the pathogen (untreated control). Finally, based on conidia germination, lack of the fungitoxic effect of JO and RE and also the slight effect of NSO (9–13.75%) may demonstrate the main role of these agents for inducing resistance through the activation of biochemical defence in treated leaves.

The preventative and curative effects of some plant derived agents based on plant extracts or essential oils were studied at different concentrations against Erysiphe cichoracearum DC. ex Merat, the causal pathogen of okra powdery mildew by the detached leaf-disk and potted plants bioassays. Through detached leaf-disk assay, the highest mean preventative effect (97.74%) was recorded by neem seed oil followed by jojoba oil (89.82%) and extract of Rynoutria sachalinensis (82.77%). Neem seed oil at 1% was the most effective agent followed by jojoba oil and extract of R. sachalinensis at 1.5% and 2%, respectively, where they suppressed E. cichoracearum completely. Potted plants assay revealed that neem seed oil, jojoba oil and extract of R. sachalinensis as well as the fungicide (active ingredient dinocap) showed higher preventative efficacy at all leaf olds treated after 7 and 14 days of inoculation as compared with extracts of henna and garlic. Moreover, the preventative efficacy partly remained apparent after 14 days of inoculation at all leaf olds tested. In field trials through 2010 and 2011 growing seasons, when the first symptoms of powdery mildew appeared naturally, 1.5% jojoba oil, 2% extract of R. sachalinensis and 1% neem seed oil were sprayed individually twice on grown plants to evaluate their efficacy on controlling powdery mildew, growth and yield of okra. Resulted showed that neem seed oil was the most effective agent and highly decreased the disease severity to 29.92%, recorded the highly curative effect (68.15%) and also improved plant growth and pods yield.

High-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of chloroform fraction (CF) of cow urine showed rich pool of phenolic acids. Antifungal and antibacterial bioassays of CF have shown its tremendous efficacy against some fungal plant pathogens as well as human pathogenic bacteria at very low concentrations. The CF also inhibited powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) of balsam (Impatiens balsamania) under field conditions during pre- and post-inoculation treatments. HPLC analysis of pre- and post-inoculation-treated plant leaves indicated that CF induced phenolic acid synthesis as compared to control. The results revealed that CF of cow urine has the potential for controlling some important human diseases. The result on balsam powdery mildew is a good signal that CF may also be effective against other plant diseases in the field.

Rheum emodi, vernacularly known as Archu, is one of the important high altitude medicinal plants widely distributed in Himalayan regions. Though widely used in Ayurveda for curing various human diseases, its use in plant diseases is limited. Ethanolic extract of Rheum rhizome was assayed against spore germination of Alternaria solani, Heliminthosporium penniseti and Curvularia palliscens. The inhibition of spore germination was concentration dependent. Maximum inhibition was obtained at 4000 and 5000 ppm followed by 3000, 2000 and 1000 ppm. However, the extract was highly effective in the pre-inoculation treatment against powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) of balsam (Impatiens balsamania) under field conditions. High performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of balsam leaves showed increased synthesis of phenolic acids, which has been correlated with induced resistance in inhibiting the disease intensity of balsam powdery mildew.

This paper reviews the scientific literature on the topic of fungal disease suppression by applications of inorganic salts as alternatives to synthetic fungicides on a global scale for both protected and field crops. Where data were available, the comparative efficacy of inorganic salts with conventional fungicide products is discussed. In total, published evidence was found for 34 inorganic salts (mainly bicarbonates, phosphates, silicates, chlorides and phosphites) that were able to reduce the severity of 49 fungal diseases (of the foliage, stem, fruit, tuber, root and post-harvest) in 35 plant species (vegetables, cereals, fruit crops, root/tuber crops, ornamentals and native plants). The most studied and best controlled disease with inorganic salts was powdery mildew of cucurbits [Sphaerotheca fuliginea (Schltdl.) Pollacci 1913 or Erysiphe cichoracearum DC. 1805; up to 99% efficacy], wheat [Blumeria graminis (DC.) Speer 1975 (f. sp. tritici)] and grapes [Uncinula necator (Schwein.) Burrill 1892]. The next best evidence for disease control was for wheat septoria blotch (Septoria tritici Berk. & M.A. Curtis 1874), rice blast [Magnaporthe grisea (T.T. Hebert) M.E. Barr 1977], potato late blight [Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary 1876] and several other Phytophthora spp. The published evidence suggests that these 34 inorganic salts are generally less effective than conventional fungicides and could not fully replace them. However, their integration in a disease management strategy may enable a reduction in the number of conventional fungicide applications required. The potential for the inclusion of inorganic salts in fungal disease management programmes merits further investigation and greater regulatory innovation in the near future.

Neem cake is used as a soil amendment. It releases nutrient into the soil very slowly. It is also an insect repellent. It improves the physical as well as biological conditions of the soil such as soil aeration, water holding capacity and also the microflora in the rhizosphere. Aqueous extract of neem cake was used against powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) of balsam (Impatiens balsaminia) in the field at 25, 50, 75 and 100%. The efficacy was observed even at low concentrations (25%). Foliar application of aqueous extract of neem cake induced synthesis of phenolic acids in balsam. Maximum phenolic acid was detected in balsam plant leaves treated with 50% neem cake followed by 75% in both pre-and post-inoculation treatments. The induction of phenolic acid in plants was correlated with the induction of resistance in treated plants against powdery mildew.

Powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum DC.) is an important disease of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) in many countries. Losses in yield and quality have been reported to be around 30% to 80% in severe cases. Northwestern Iran is a hotspot for tobacco powdery mildew. To identify resistant genotypes, tobacco germplasm, including recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross Basma S.31 × Dubec566, some Iranian landraces, and cultivars from different countries were evaluated under field conditions using a simple lattice design (10×10) with two replications. Each plot comprised 3 rows, 5 meters long. Spacing between rows was 65 cm and between plants within rows 20 cm. Susceptible line (Basma S.31) was planted throughout the experiment to guarantee homogeneous inoculation. The anti-fungal activity of two alkaloids isolated from bulbs of Zephyranthes citrina was observed against 10 fungi, viz, Aternaria solani, A. triticina, Curvularia lunata, C. maculuns, Cercospora malvacearum, Erysiphe sp., Fusarium udum, Helminthosporium pisi, H. speciferum and Ustilago cynodontis. Different concentrations (200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 µg/ml of alkaloids (A and B) were used. Spore germination was inhibited at 600, 800, 1000 µg/ml. B alkaloid was used against Erysiphe cichoracearum causing powdery mildew in balsam (Impatiens balsamina) in the field as pre- and post-inoculation treatments at 1000, 1500, 2000 µg/ml doses. The extract was effective in both pre- and post-inoculation treatments. Foliar application of this alkaloid resulted in inducing synthesis of phenolic acid in the leaves of balsam. This study examines the effects of a vegetable fungicide on sugar beet powdery mildew (Erysiphe betae) and cucumber powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum). The formulations consisting of a dispersion of Brassicaceae meal in vegetable or mineral oils on infected leaves of sugar beet, reared in the greenhouse, and of musk melons cultivated under plastic tunnels, were tested in comparison to each oil taken separately. Both formulations containing Brassicaceae meals, caused 94% of conidia to be distorted while for the untreated group only 2% were distorted. Furthermore, the leaf area infected by E. betae was 56% for untreated plants and 2.7 and 9.9% respectively, for plants treated with meal containing mineral and vegetable oil. Vegetable oil considered separately or with Brassicaceae meals showed no phytotoxicity, while the formulations based on mineral oil showed a significantly lower fresh and dry weight on tomato plants. The low level or absence of phytotoxicity of plants treated with vegetable oil formulations suggests that to improve the efficacy of powdery mildew control, they could be used mixed with sulphur. The efficiency of the vegetable formulations in the powdery mildew control observed during these trials encourages further investigation on other parasitic fungi and foliar pathogens.

Powdery mildew, caused by Erysiphe cichoracearum or Podosphaera fusca, is a common disease of gerbera daisy (Gerbera jamesonii) grown in Florida. Previous studies demonstrated that silicon reduces powdery mildew in Arabidopsis, cucumber, grape, strawberry, and wheat. In this study, two silicon (Si) sources, calcium silicate and potassium silicate, were evaluated for their ability to reduce powdery mildew in gerbera ‘Snow White’. The effect of calcium silicate in flower quality and the silicon uptake was also determined. Calcium silicate was not effective in reducing powdery mildew or in improving flower quality. The silicon content of gerberas treated with potassium silicate was slightly greater than that in plants treated with calcium silicate. However, the severity of powdery mildew was not reduced by potassium silicate. The results suggest that silicon may not be useful for managing this disease of gerbera daisy, possibly due to the low accumulation of silicon by gerbera leaves.

Effectiveness of Azoxystrobin in the Control ofErysiphe CichoracearumandPseudoperonospora Cubensison CucumberThe bioefficacy of azoxystrobin (Amistar 25 SC) was tested against cucumber downy mildew and powdery mildew diseases. The two season trials of field studies revealed that the disease progression of cucumber downy mildew and powdery mildew was successfully arrested by azoxystrobin. Spraying of azoxystrobin at various doses (31.25, 62.50 and 125g a.s./ha) revealed that 125 g a.s./ha (500 ml/ha) was considered as the optimum dose for the control of these diseases of cucumber. The treatment also recorded the highest yield of 13.23 and 14.46 tonnes/ha in the first and second season, respectively. No phytotoxic effect of azoxystrobin was observed in the both field trials even at four times of the recommended dose 125 g a.s./ha. The persistence of azoxystrobin at 250 and 500 g a.s./ha was observed up to seven days after last spraying. However, the persistence of azoxystrobin at 31.25, 62.50 and 125 a.s./ha was observed up to three to five days after last spraying. The safe waiting period for the harvest of cucumber fruits was 1.53 days in the first field trial and 2.37 days in the second field trial, respectively at azoxystrobin 125 g a.s./ha. The residues of azoxystrobin were at below detectable level (BDL) in the harvested cucumber fruits.

Tobacco leaf sections were treated with actin inhibitors, i.e., cytochalasins, to determine the effects of actin depolymerization on tobacco defense responses. Inoculation of the leaf sections with the pathogen Erysiphe cichoracearum, depolymerized the actin cytoskeleton, priming the cells for a hypersensitive response-like cell death. Further, expression of the acidic PR1 and PR2 genes were induced in cytochalasin-treated leaf sections. The intensity of the cytochalasin effects on the defense responses was closely correlated with the extent of actin depolymerization. This suggests that plant cells may perceive perturbation of the actin cytoskeleton, and this stimulus may trigger plant defense responses.

Exudates from sclerotia of two Sclerotium rolfsii isolates (one causing collar rot in Cicer arietinum, isolate VC971, and the other leaf spots in Rauvolfia serpentina, isolate VL016) were assayed for their antifungal activity against 26 fungi consisting of plant parasites as well as saprophytes. Spore germination of all the test fungi was affected by the exudates reaching 100% in some cases. Foliar spray with exudates of isolate VL016 significantly reduced disease incidence of balsam (Impatiens balsamina) powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe cichoracearum and pea (Pisum sativum) powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe pisi, under field conditions. Characterization of exudates from 25 isolates of S. rolfsii revealed pH ranging from 3.8 to 5.3 and colour from light yellow to deep yellow. Among the phenolic acids found in the exudates were tannic, gallic, caffeic, vanillic, ferulic, chlorogenic and cinnamic acids. Oxalic acid was also found in varied amounts. Among the phenolic acids, ferulic acid was found to be present at high concentration in exudates of most isolates (3.9–153.4 μg/ml). The antioxidant properties of phenolics, which generally inhibit fungal morphogenesis including spore germination along with the antifungal nature of some phenolics are chiefly attributed to the inhibitory effect of sclerotial exudates of S. rolfsii. Additionally, both the isolates VC971 and VL016 showed almost similar antifungal activities despite they are of different origin and thereby demonstrate the antifungal nature of sclerotial exudates.

Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici, the causal agent of powdery mildew in wheat, is an obligate biotrophic fungus that exclusively invades epidermal cells. As previously shown, spraying of a solution of syringolin A, a circular peptide derivative secreted by the phytopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, triggers hypersensitive cell death at infection sites in powdery mildew infected wheat. Thus, the fungus is essentially eradicated. Here we show that syringolin A also triggers hypersensitive cell death in Arabidopsis infected with the powdery mildew fungus Erysiphe cichoracearum. To monitor transcriptional changes associated with this effect, we cloned 307 cDNA clones representing 158 unigenes from powdery mildew infected, syringolin A sprayed wheat leaves by a suppression subtractive hybridization cloning procedure. These cDNAs were microarrayed onto glass slides together with 1088 cDNA-AFLP clones from powdery mildew-infected wheat. Microarray hybridization experiments were performed with probes derived from leaves, epidermal tissue, and mesophyll preparations of mildewed or uninfected wheat plants after syringolin A or control treatment. Similar experiments were performed in Arabidopsis using the Affymetrix ATH1 whole genome GeneChip. The results indicate a conserved mode of action of syringolin A as similar gene groups are induced in both species. Prominent groups include genes associated with the proteasomal degradation pathway, mitochondrial and other heat shock genes, genes involved in mitochondrial alternative electron pathways, and genes encoding glycolytic and fermentative enzymes. Surprisingly, in both species the observed transcriptional response to syringolin A was considerably weaker in infected plants as compared to uninfected plants. The results lead to the working hypothesis that cell death observed at infection sites may result from a parasite-induced suppression of the transcriptional response and thus to insufficient production of protective proteins necessary for the recovery of these cells from whatever insult is imposed by syringolin A.

The effectiveness of four plant oils (garlic, ginger, cinnamon and lemongrass) against a range of plant pathogenic organisms was tested in vitro. Of the four oils, two oils (garlic and cinnamon) showed relatively good antimicrobial activities. Activity of garlic oil was shown against the plant pathogenic bacteria Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Ewinia carotovora, Ralstonia solanacearum, Xanthomonas campestris, and the fungi Phytophthora infestans, Fusarium oxysporum, Collectotricum sp., whereas Acidovorax avenae and Pythium sp. showed the resistance towards garlic oil. Results from the planta bioassays under greenhouse conditions indicated that garlic oil significantly reduced the cucumber powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca fusca) and tomato powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) showing control value 70.0-74.6% and 71.2%, respectively.

Disease severity (percentage of the leaf area infected) caused by Erysiphe cichoracearum D.C. Ex Merat powdery mildew on squash (Cucurbita maxima Dutch) was assessed by analysis of visual and digital images. To evaluate the accuracy of these methods, their estimates were compared with actual disease values severity obtained from a digital pattern. A panel of five evaluators did the visual assessments (VIS) and the image analysis assessment considered two capture protocols: scanner (IAS) and digital photography (IAC) using ArcView GIS 3.2 software. The digital pattern was developed with the Adobe® Photoshop 5.0 software using the leaf digital images obtained with the scanner. The procedure to validate and compare the methodologies was based on the χ 2 -hypothetical variance test proposed by Freese (1960, Forest Sci. 6(2), 139–145) and the estimated error limit (Rennie and Wiant, 1978, Resour. Invent. Notes 14, 1–3), respectively. The results showed a lack of agreement between the estimates from the IAS, IAC and VIS against the digital pattern. The advantages and limitations of using visual analysis and image analysis to assess the squash powdery mildew severity are discussed.

Powdery mildew, caused by Oidium lini, is an important disease of flax (Linum usitatissimum) in western Canada. Investigations on the genetics of resistance to powdery mildew in flax resulted in the identification of several resistant Canadian and introduced cultivars. A single dominant gene for resistance to powdery mildew, designated PM1, was identified in Canadian flax cultivars (‘AC Watson’, ‘AC McDuff’, and ‘AC Emerson’) and introduced flax cultivars (‘Atalante’ and ‘Linda’). In addition, two putative dominant genes for resistance to powdery mildew were identified in ‘Linda’.

Vegetable crops as a group are the fourth most important crop commodity in Puerto Rico, preceded by starchy crops, fruit crops and coffee commodities. Their production value for 2001-02 was close to $27 million (Department of Agriculture, 2002). Although vegetable crops have a high economic impact on Puerto Rico's agriculture, during the past ten years no local research has evaluated fungal diseases affecting them. In Puerto Rico, various fungal diseases causing damage to different vegetable crops have been reported. In cucurbits, including tropical pumpkin [Cucurbita moschata (Duchesne ex Lam.)], watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nak.], cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and melons (Cucumis melo L.), Ruiz-Giraldo (1986; 1992) mentioned the fungi Pseudoperonospora cubensis and Erysiphe cichoracearum causing downy mildew and powdery mildew, respectively, and Dydimella bryoniae (syn. Mycosphaerella melonis), producing gummy stem blight. He also reported target spot, caused by Corynespora cassiicola, mainly affecting cucumber. Also reported was the southern blight, caused by Sclerotium rolfsii, affecting eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Puerto Rico (Ruiz-Giraldo, 1986). Leveillula taurica is known to cause powdery mildew in pepper (Negron et al., 1991; Ruiz-Giraldo, 1986; Ruiz, 1990; Ruiz-Giraldo and Rodriguez, 1992), whereas Phytophthora sp. causes pepper blight (Ruiz-Giraldo, 1986; Ruiz, 1990). In tomatoes, Phytophthora infestans was reported causing late blight (Ruiz-Giraldo, 1986; 1990) and Fulvia fulva (syn. Cladosporium fulvum) causing leaf mold (RuizGiraldo, 1990). Martin and Hepperly (1987) mentioned early blight, caused by Alternaria solani, as a limiting factor for successful year-round tomato production in Puerto Rico. In cabbage (Brassica oleracea L., Capitata Group), Monllor (1992) mentioned downy mildew (Peronospora sp.), leaf spot (Alternaria sp.), damping-off (Pythium sp. or Rhizoctonia sp.) and wire stem (Rhizoctonia sp.) as some of the most common diseases affecting this crop. Ruiz (1989) reported Alternaria porri, causing purple blotch, and Peronospora destructor, causing downy mildew, as two important fungal diseases in onion (Allium cepa L.) production. Fornaris et al. (1990) observed black mold (Aspergillus niger) in onion bulbs under storage. Reports published in The Journal of Agriculture of the University of Puerto Rico (JAUPR) before 1986 on fungal diseases affecting vegetable crops are the ones by Stevenson (1917), Matz (1921), Toro (1923), Nolla (1926,1929), Alvarez-Garcia (1946,1947), and

A transgenic Arabidopsis line containing a chimeric PR-1∷luciferase (LUC) reporter gene was subjected to mutagenesis with activation tags. Screening of lines via high-throughput LUC imaging identified a number of dominant Arabidopsis mutants that exhibited enhanced PR-1 gene expression. Here, we report the characterization of one of these mutants, designated activated disease resistance (adr) 1. This line showed constitutive expression of a number of key defense marker genes and accumulated salicylic acid but not ethylene or jasmonic acid. Furthermore, adr1 plants exhibited resistance against the biotrophic pathogens Peronospora parasitica and Erysiphe cichoracearum but not the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea. Analysis of a series of adr1 double mutants suggested that adr1-mediated resistance against P. parasitica was salicylic acid (SA)-dependent, while resistance against E. cichoracearum was both SA-dependent and partially NPR1-dependent. The ADR1 gene encoded a protein possessing a number of key features, including homology to subdomains of protein kinases, a nucleotide binding domain, and leucine-rich repeats. The controlled, transient expression of ADR1 conveyed striking disease resistance in the absence of yield penalty, highlighting the potential utility of this gene in crop protection.

For obligate parasites like Erysiphe cichoracearum, manipulation of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) nutrition may provide an alternative control method for powdery mildew in greenhouse crops. Subsequently, Hiemalis begonias “Hilda” and “Renaissance” were grown in separate experiments with a factorial combination of three N (30, 120, 240 mg L−1) and three K (30, 120, 240 mg L−1) rates applied at each irrigation. One‐half the plants in each treatment were inoculated with E. cichoracearum, while the remaining plants were sprayed regularly with the fungicide triadimefon to prevent disease development. Plant growth and powdery mildew incidence in both cultivars were significantly influenced by N fertilization and pathogen inoculation, but relatively unaffected by K fertility. Shoot dry mass in both cultivars increased with increasing N rate up to 120 mg N/L, but decreased from pathogen inoculation. This latter response increased in magnitude with increasing N rate in “Hilda”, but not in “Renaissance”. ...

Benzothiadiazole (BTH), as Bion WG50, and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) treatments of potato foliage of field- and glasshouse-grown potato plants were compared for control of two foliar diseases, early blight (Alternaria solani) and powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum). The effect of these treatments on harvested tubers wound-inoculated with the dry rot fungus (Fusarium semitectum) was also evaluated. BTH (50 mg a.i. L−1) gave almost complete control of both foliar pathogens on inoculated glasshouse-grown plants and reduced the severity of leaf spotting diseases (mainly early blight) in the field. BTH (100 mg a.i. L−1) and ASA (400 mg a.i. L−1) reduced the severity of dry rot in field-grown tubers in some post-harvest wound-inoculated treatments but not others and a similar reduction occurred with tubers inoculated post-harvest from BTH-treated plants grown under glasshouse conditions. BTH treatment increased β-1,3-glucanase activity in leaves > stem > tubers > stolons but not in roots. Increased enzyme activity was recorded for up to 45 days post-treatment.

In Arabidopsis spp., the jasmonate (JA) response pathway generally is required for defenses against necrotrophic pathogens and chewing insects, while the salicylic acid (SA) response pathway is generally required for specific, resistance (R) gene-mediated defenses against both biotrophic and necrotrophic pathogens. For example, SA-dependent defenses are required for resistance to the biotrophic fungal pathogen Erysiphe cichoracearum UCSC1 and the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola, and also are expressed during response to the green peach aphid Myzus persicae. However, recent evidence indicates that the expression of JA-dependent defenses also may confer resistance to E. cichoracearum. To confirm and to extend this observation, we have compared the disease and pest resistance of wild-type Arabidopsis plants with that of the mutants coi1, which is insensitive to JA, and cev1, which has constitutive JA signaling. Measurements of the colonization of these plants by E. cichoracearum, P. syringae pv. maculicola, and M. persicae indicated that activation of the JA signal pathway enhanced resistance, and was associated with the activation of JA-dependent defense genes and the suppression of SA-dependent defense genes. We conclude that JA and SA induce alternative defense pathways that can confer resistance to the same pathogens and pests.

Biotrophic fungi, such as the rust fungi and the powdery mildew fungi, represent a distinct and economically important group of plant pathogens. Studies of nonhost interactions with Uromyces vignae (cowpea rust fungus, monokaryotic stage) or Erysiphe cichoracearum (plantain powdery mildew fungus) suggest that for both types of biotrophs, penetration through the epidermal wall commonly fails in association with wall-associated defense responses, in part elicited by breakdown products of the plant cell wall. Data suggest that extracellular hydrogen peroxide plays a primary role in this penetration failure, acting either as a signaling agent or as a necessary adjunct to some other defense response within the wall. Protoplast involvement, but not necessarily transcription or translation, is necessary for these wall-associated responses, and they can be reduced by reducing the adhesion between the plant cell wall and the plasma membrane. Attempts at breeding squash (Cucurbita pepo) resistant to powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca fuliginea and Erysiphe cichoracearum) have heretofore been unsuccessful due mainly to association of the resistance trait with reduction in yield. The goal of the present work was to determine if heterozygous hybrids expressing partial resistance could be potentially valuable for squash growers. One heterozygous hybrid each of zucchini, cocozelle, and vegetable-marrow squash was grown alongside a leading susceptible commercial hybrid cultivar of the same type, under standard field conditions. Although fungicides were applied at recommended rates every 6 to 13 days to suppress powdery mildew, the susceptible hybrids became heavily infested later in the season. The resistant hybrids were similar to their respective commercially available susceptible hybrids in fruit appearance and other horticulturally important traits. The resistant hybrids yielded at least as well as the commercial hybrids early in the season and outyielded them later in the season.

To further the understanding of the natural genetic diversity for disease resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) in Arabidopsis thaliana, quantitative trait loci analysis was undertaken on recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between the resistant accession Warschau-1 and the susceptible Columbia-0. Powdery mildew grew less well on Warschau-1, but the resistance was not associated with a specific block in the infection sequence. Two potential powdery mildew disease-resistance loci were identified and mapped, one with a major effect and one with a minor effect on disease resistance. The two loci acted in an additive manner to confer resistance, and together they explained 65% of the variation in resistance. In addition, the major powdery mildew disease-resistance locus was genetically mapped to the bottom of chromosome III, a region containing the powdery mildew resistance loci RPW7, RPW8 and RPW10. Unlike resistance mediated by the RPW8 locus in the accession Moscow-1, resistance in Warschau-1 was not correlated with the hypersensitive response, highlighting the influence of genetic background or environmental factors on the expression of disease resistance. Together with the powdery mildew resistance loci described in other studies, these results suggest that A. thaliana is a useful source of natural powdery mildew disease resistance, which potentially can be utilized in fundamental studies and as a tool for applied studies.

Tobacco cv. Havana 425 acquired resistance to a compatible isolate of Erysiphe cichoracearum after infection by a strain of potato virus Y (PVYN) that causes veinal necrosis; another common strain (PVYO) that does not cause necrosis gave less protection. Hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins (HRGPs), believed to be involved in resistance, were determined by analysing hydroxyproline (Hyp) in purified cell walls. Hyp content increased significantly in PVYN-protected leaves, compared with untreated controls, 2–4 days after necrotic lesion symptoms developed. No further increase in Hyp was noted in PVYN-protected leaves after E. cichoracearum challenge. Hyp increases were significantly higher in protected leaves of plants showing symptoms on day 7 than on day 10. Infection with the PVYO strain caused significant decrease in Hyp content, compared with uninoculated controls. Inoculation of virus-free plants with E. cichoracearum induced moderate and transitory Hyp increases on day 2 or 3, followed by a quick decrease associated with a weak response by the compatible host. It is suggested that HRGP accumulation induced by PVYN (but not by PVYO) causes changes in the host cell wall that result in resistance to E. cichoracearum.

A melon (Cucumis melo L.) breeding line derived from PI 414723 is resistant to three potyviruses,watermelon mosaic virus (WMV), zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), papaya ringspot virus (PRSV), and to powdery mildew (PM). The inheritance and linkage relationships of these four resistances were studied in a segregating F2 population and derived F3 families from a cross between cultivar Top Mark and the resistant breeding line. Dominant monogenic inheritance of all four resistances was observed. We report that line 414723-4S3, which was initially selected as a source of ZYMV and WMV resistance, is also a source of dominant monogenic resistances to PRSV and PM race 1. We also report on genetic linkage (significant departure from independent segregation, χ2 = 58.1, p≪ 0.0001) between resistance to WMV and ZYMV. The map distance between these loci was estimated to be 7.5 cm. The genes for resistance to PM and PRSV segregated independently from each other, and from ZYMV and WMV resistance.

In previous work, UEA1 and UCSC1, two geographically distinct, powdery mildew isolates, were recognized for their ability to infect Arabidopsis thaliana. We have clarified the identity of these isolates by determining their host ranges, reexamining their morphology, and comparing their DNA sequences for the 5.8S ribosomal RNA and two flanking internal transcribed spacer sequences. These experiments confirm that UEA1 is a member of Erysiphe cruciferarum and that UCSC1 belongs to E. cichoracearum. Interactions of the two Erysiphe isolates with 360 A. thaliana accessions were examined to provide a comprehensive profile of naturally occurring powdery mildew resistance in this weedy species. The majority of A. thaliana accessions (213) were susceptible to both isolates. Among the accessions exhibiting some degree of resistance, most (84) responded differentially to UEA1 and UCSC1 and the remainder were resistant to both isolates. Notably, resistance to UCSC1 cosegregated with RPW7, a locus previously demonstrated to confer resistance to UEA1 in Ms-0 × Landsberg (erecta) crosses. With this large collection of resistant accessions, questions about species specificity, genetic diversity and the evolution of resistance to powdery mildews can be addressed.

International audience; The relative incidence of Erysiphe cichoracearum and Sphaerotheca fuliginea, both agents of powdery mildew of cucurbits, was determined from 275 samples of mildewed leaves of cucurbits collected in 1994 from five regions of France. E. cichoracearum was identified in 9 to 39% of the mildewed leaf samples from four of the regions but was not detected in samples from the Mediterranean island of Corsica. The genetic structure of the French population of E. cichoracearum was examined using RFLPs of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacers amplified by PCR, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, pathogenicity and mating-type tests. Forty-one isolates, including one from England, were analysed. Cluster analysis from 147 RAPD fragments using 16 primers revealed the existence of three distinct genetic lineages corresponding to three rDNA haplotypes (designated groups A, B and C). Bootstrap, genetic diversity, gametic disequilibrium and private allele analyses supported this differentiation. The genetic differentiation observed in the French population was not related to the geographical origin of the isolates. Group A isolates may be more specialized on melon as, with one exception, they were of race 1 (growth on four of the five melon cultivars tested) in comparison with group B and C isolates, which were of race 0 (growth on IranH only). Thus, the genetic differentiation observed may indicate a host-specialized subdivision within the French population of E. cichoracearum from cucurbits. Gametic disequilibrium analysis among RAPD loci and biological observations suggest that the sexual stage is of minor importance for epidemics of E. cichoracearum on cucurbits.

The human lysozyme gene, which is assembled by the stepwise ligation of chemically synthesized oligonucleotides, was introduced into tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv `SR1') by the Agrobacterium-mediated method. The introduced human lysozyme gene was highly expressed under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter, and the gene product accumulated in the transgenic tobacco plants. The transgenic tobacco plants showed enhanced resistance against the fungus Erysiphe cichoracearum - both conidia formation and mycelial growth were reduced, and the size of the colony was diminished. Microscopic observation revealed that the transgenic tobacco plants carried the resistant phenotype, analogous to that of the resistant cultivar `Kokubu' which had been selected by conventional breeding. Growth of the phytopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci was also strongly retarded in the transgenic tobacco, and the chlorotic halo of the disease symptom was reduced to 17% of that observed in the wild-type tobacco. Thus, the introduction of a human lysozyme gene is an effective approach to protect crops against both fungal and bacterial diseases.

Tobacco plants (Nicotiana benthamiana L.) have been transformed with a T-DNA vector construct carrying the cDNA pBH6-301, encoding the major pathogen induced leaf peroxidase (Prx8) of barley, under control of an enhanced CaMV 35S promoter. Progeny from three independent transformants were analyzed genetically, phenotypically and biochemically. The T-DNA was steadily inherited through three generations. The barley peroxidase is expressed and sorted to the intercellular space in the transgenic tobacco plants. The peroxidase can be extracted from the intercellular space in two molecular forms from both barley and transgenic tobacco. The tobacco expressed forms are indistinguishable from the barley expressed forms as determined by analytical isoelectric focusing (pI 8.5) and Western-blotting. Staining for N-glycosylation showed that one form only was glycosylated. The N-terminus of purified Prx8 from transgenic tobacco was blocked by pyroglutamate, after the removal of which, N-terminal sequencing verified the transit signal-peptide cleavage site deduced from the cDNA sequence. Phenotype comparisons show that the constitutive expression of Prx8 lead to growth retardation. However, an infection assay with the tobacco powdery mildew pathogen Erysiphe cichoracearum did not indicate that the transgenic plants had achieved enhanced resistance.

Summary Tilletiopsis albescens grows well on powdery mildew fungi inoculated on barley or cucumber leaves and causes collapse of the colonies. Application of ballistospores or cut mycelium was equally effective for biocontrol, and the effectiveness tended to increase exponentially with the concentration of germinating units (conidia and cut mycelium) applied. Seventy percent relative humidity or more is required for effective biocontrol. Two applications of T. albescens in the period from 3 days before to 3 days after inoculation with powdery mildew were more effective than one. Applications before inoculation or 7 days after inoculation with powdery mildew had little effect. T. albescens followed the powdery mildew as it was disseminated to uninoculated leaves, but this did not result in an effective biocontrol. The potential for using T. albescens for biocontrol of powdery mildews is discussed.

Local infections of either TMV or TNV in tobacco plants cv. Havana 425 (hypersensitive to TMV) proved effective in inducing systemic resistance to subsequent inoculation with the powdery mildew fungus Erysiphe cichoracearum DC. The proportion of leaf surface invaded by this pathogen and the amount of conidia it produced were both significantly lower in virus inoculated plants than in non-inoculated controls. However, the decrease in sporulation rate was less regularly observed than the reduction in leaf area infected. TMV was more effective than TNV in protecting tobacco plants from powdery mildew. E. cichoracearum is thus added to the list of challenge pathogens to which TMV or TNV are known to induce resistance in the host plants. Necrotic lesions caused to the leaves by local treatment with Ethephon (an ethylene-releasing compound) also conferred to tobacco some degree of systemic resistance to the same fungal pathogen, more frequently visible as a reduction of leaf area invaded. The protection due to the Ethephon lesions was in present experiments less marked than that of TMV. No effects against subsequent powdery mildew infection were obtained when point freeze necrotic lesions were provoked on the plants.

Summary The coumarin umbelliferone was identified as a stress metabolite of the medicinal plant Chamomilla recutita . The increased content of umbelliferone was already observed in leaves 12 hrs after abiotic stress elicitation by CuCl 2 . In 48 hrs this amount rose approximately 10 times. In the same period of time, a decrease of ( Z )- and ( E )-2- β -D-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxy cinnamic acid and an increase of herniarin was found. In the leaves infected by powdery mildew Erysiphe cichoracearum DC., the increase of umbelliferone content was also observed.

The current powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca fuligninea) resistant cucumber varieties suffer from leaf chlorosis during autumn, winter and early spring cultivation in the Netherlands. Therefore screening was carried out for novel powdery mildew resistance genes. From 177 accessions, derived from different sources, 108 accessions proved to be partially resistant to S. fuliginea. Crosses were made with 53 resistant accessions to distinguish the presence of novel genes. It is likely that the accessions C. sativus 2145, C. sativus LV 41, PI 188807, Vladivostokij, White and Yellow 1 have one or more recessive powdery mildew resistance genes, different from powdery mildew resistance genes of the line NPI, which was used for variety breeding. Powdery mildew resistance tests with S. fuliginea give similar results in different regions of the world.

International audience; Inheritance of resistance of five melon lines to two strains of Sphaerotheca fuliginea belonging to races 1 (Sf1) and 2 (Sf2) and to one strain of Erysiphe cichoracearum (Ec) have been studied. ‘PMR 45’ possesses one dominant gene controlling only Sf1. ‘WMR 29’ has one dominant gene for resistance to Sf1 and another for Sf2 and these genes seem to be linked. In line ‘PMR 5’, one dominant gene (or a group of three closely linked genes) is involved in the control of the three strains with one complementary gene for Sf1 and another one for Ec. ‘PI 124112’ has one dominant gene or two closely linked loci controlling Sf1 and Sf2 and two complementary different genes controlling Ec. ‘Nantais Oblong’ has one dominant gene controlling only Ec. A nomenclature of the genes described is proposed.

Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is an inducible defence mechanism which plays a central role in protecting plants from microbial pathogen attack. Guided by bioassays, a new chemical inducer of SAR was isolated from the extracts of Strobilanthes cusia and identified to be 3-acetonyl-3-hydroxyoxindole (AHO), a derivative of isatin. Tobacco plants treated with AHO exhibited enhanced resistance to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and to the fungal pathogen Erysiphe cichoracearum (powdery mildew), accompanied by increased levels of pathogenesis-related gene 1 (PR-1) expression, salicylic acid (SA) accumulation and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity. To study the mode of action of AHO, its ability to induce PR-1 expression and TMV resistance in nahG transgenic plants expressing salicylate hydroxylase, which prevents the accumulation of SA, was analysed. AHO treatment did not induce TMV resistance or PR-1 expression in nahG transgenic plants, suggesting that AHO acts upstream of SA in the SAR signalling pathway. In addition, using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis combined with mass spectrometry, five AHO-induced plant proteins were identified which were homologous to the effector proteins with which SA interacts. Our data suggest that AHO may represent a novel class of inducer that stimulates SA-mediated defence responses.

Aircraft-applied dust and liquid sulfur sprays were evaluated for control of powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichmacearumDC), on rill irrigated potatoes (cv. Russet Burbank). Either form of sulfur applied weekly or biweekly usually controlledE. chichoracearum through September, but not in October. Significant yield increases were obtained in only two of five trials. The small differences in disease severity between weekly and biweekly applications of sulfur were not significant. Sulfur gave very little control if applied after infection was established. Applications of liquid sulfur, the formulation less likely to cause environmental problems, should be started at the first trace of stipples on stems and continued biweekly throughout the season.

Larvas recém-eclodidas de P. confluens foram individualizadas e alimentadas diariamente com hifas e conídios do fungo, em folhas de quiabeiro, a 23,6±3 e 27,4±2ºC e fotófase de 12 horas. A duração dos estágios imaturos, os aspectos reprodutivos e a longevidade de P. confluens foram avaliados. O período de desenvolvimento de larva a adulto foi 20,5 dias a 23,6ºC e 16,6 dias a 27,4ºC. em ambas as temperaturas, 80% das larvas de P. confluens atingiram a fase adulta. Fêmeas de P. confluens apresentaram período de oviposição de 32,7 dias, com capacidade diária e total de oviposição de 16,8 e 439,9 ovos, respectivamente. A longevidade das fêmeas foi de 46,1 dias e a dos machos 58,7 dias. P. confluens, ao se alimentar do fungo E. cichoracearum em folhas de quiabeiro, completa o ciclo de vida e apresenta elevados padrões de sobrevivência e reprodução. The objective of this work was to assess the biological aspects of Psyllobora confluens fed with Erysiphe cichoracearum fungus in okra leaves. New hatched larvae of P. confluens were individualized and fed daily with powdery mildew hyphae and conidia of the fungus, in okra leaves, at 23.6±3 and 27.4±3ºC and 12 hours of photophase. The developmental period of immature stages, reproductive aspects and longevity of P. confluens were evaluated. The period from larvae development to adult emergence was 20.5 days at 23.6ºC and 16.6 days at 27.4ºC. Under the tested temperatures, 80% of P. confluens larvae reached the adult phase. P. confluens females showed oviposition period of 32.7 days, with daily and total capacity of oviposition of 16.8 and 439.9 eggs, respectively. The longevity of females was 46.1 days and of males 58.7 days. P. confluens fed with E. cichoracearum in okra leaves completes its life cycle and presents high standard of survival and reproduction. In two meteorologically quite different years, 2002 and 2003, efficacy of three natural substances with a fungicidal activity (sulphur, soya lecithin, salicylic acid) for control of Erysiphe cichoracearum on chicory was tested. In a block designed field experiment, there were statistically significant differences in the mean index of infection of exterior leaves, in the mean total weight and mean net weight of the plants (= total weight weight of removed damaged leaves). There was also a significant difference in firmness of the heads of nine chicory varieties that was established in both years. In 2002, when no extreme weather conditions occurred, the fungus spread to a substantially larger extent. Yet no statistically significant differences were found in the efficacy of environmentally friendly fungicidal substances for control of the fungus. In the hotter and drier year of 2003, which was less favourable for spread of the pathogen, sulphur-containing fungicide was the most effective. In 2002, chicory yield was lower than in 2003. Generally, yield loss due to removal of damaged leaves was from 30.7 to 45.0% in the first year, and from 11.3 to 24.8% in the second. The highest mean total yield and net yield of chicory were in plants, which were treated three times with sulphur-containing fungicide. In 2002, the most firm heads were in plants treated with sulphur. In 2003, no significant differences among substances were detected. The most infected with the powdery mildew caused by E. cichoracearum, were the less productive varieties of chicory. A statistically significant relationship was not found between the firmness of the heads and the degree of infection. Among different parameters in this experiment, the only relevant and high statistically significant positive correlation (r2 = 0.71) was determined between the total weight of the plants and yield loss of chicory due to infection with the fungus in question.

The 99 accessions of seven wild Lactuca species (L. serriola, L. saligna, L. virosa, L. viminea, L. perennis, L. tenerrima, L. tatarica) and Mycelis muralis (syn. L. muralis) were tested for natural infection of Erysiphe cichoracearum L. serriola accessions were highly susceptible. L. saligna showed highly variable levels of resistance. Other Lactuca species were mostly resistant or only moderately susceptible.

Cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L., Asteraceae) is an annual broadleaf weed native to the Americas and eastern Asia. The plant is known as one of the worst competitive weeds in soybean fields and also is known to have some phytopharmacological or toxicological properties. In October 2011, a powdery mildew disease was observed on cocklebur growing in a natural landscape at Geomun Oreum located in Jeju Island, South Korea. Initial signs appeared as thin white colonies, which subsequently developed abundant growth on adaxial leaf surfaces. As the disease progressed, brown discoloration extended down infected leaves which withered. Conidia were formed singly and terminally on conidiophores. Primary conidia (20.3 to 28.6 [average 25.1] μm long × 11.1 to 15.2 [14.3] μm wide, n = 30) were ellipsoid with a round apex and truncate base. Conidiophores were straight or slightly curved and 60.1 to 101.7 (97.3) μm long × 8.2 to 13.2 (11.3) μm wide. Chasmothecia were not observed. No fibrosin bodies were observed in the conidia. Morphological characteristics were consistent with descriptions of Podosphaera xanthii (syn. P. fusca) (2,4). To confirm the identity of the causal fungus, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region inclusive of 5.8S and 28S rDNA was amplified from white patches consisting of mycelia and conidia on one leaf using ITS1 (5′-TCCGTAGGTGAACCTGCGG-3′) and LR5F (5′-GCTATCCTGAGGGAAAC-3′), and LROR (5′-ACCCGCTGAACTTAAGC-3′) and LR5F primer sets, respectively. The resulting sequences were deposited in GenBank (Accession Nos. JX502022 and JX964999). A NCBI BLASTn search revealed that the rDNA ITS (JX502022) and 28S (JX964999) homologies of isolate EML-XSPW1 represented 99.6% (512/514) and 100% (803/803) identity values with those of P. xanthii (AB040330 and AB462792, respectively). The rDNA ITS and 28S sequence analysis revealed that the causal fungus clustered with P. xanthii (syn. P. fusca), falling into the Xanthii/Fusca phylogenetic group (2,4). Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculations made by gently pressing infected leaves onto mature leaves of healthy cocklebur plants in the field in August. The six inoculated leaves were sealed in sterilized vinyl bags to maintain humid conditions for 2 days. Seven days after inoculation, symptoms similar to those observed under natural infection were observed on the inoculated plant leaves. No symptoms developed on the uninoculated control plants. A fungal pathogen that was morphologically identical to the fungus originally observed on diseased plants was also observed on inoculated plants. Erysiphe cichoracearum, E. communis, Oidium asteris-punicei, O. xanthimi, P. xanthii, and P. fuliginea have all been reported to cause powdery mildew on cocklebur (1). P. xanthii was first reported on X. strumarium in Russia (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of powdery mildew on cocklebur caused by P. xanthii in Korea. Sonchus asper is an exotic annual herb belonging to the Asteraceae family. Crude extracts of S. asper leaves have antiphlogistic and antibacterial properties. In May 2011, severe infection of powdery mildew was observed on S. asper in Henan Province, a central area of China. Symptoms began as small, nearly circular white spots that later enlarged and coalesced. As the disease progressed, white mycelia covered the entire plant, including the inflorescence. The voucher specimens are kept at the Key Laboratory of Plant-Microbe Interaction, Shangqiu Normal University. Conidiophores were erect, 108 to 220 × 10 to 12 μm, and composed of a cylindrical foot cell followed by two to three short cells. Nipple-shaped appressoria were formed on ectophytic mycelia. Conidia were hyaline and cylindrical, without distinct fibrosin bodies, and ranging from 29 to 42 × 19 to 24 μm. Long, unbranched germ tubes were formed from the ends of the conidia. These morphological characteristics suggested that the powdery mildew fungus is the anamorph of Golovinomyces cichoracearum (1,2). Chasmothecia were not observed in the collected samples. To confirm the identification, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA was amplified with ITS1 and ITS4 primers (4) and sequenced. The ITS sequence obtained was assigned Accession No. JQ010848 in GenBank, and had 99% similarity to two ITS sequences from different G. cichoracearum accessions (HM449077 and AY739111). The ITS sequence analysis further verified that the causal agent of the powdery mildew on S. asper was G. cichoracearum. Pathogenicity was confirmed by inoculating five healthy plants of S. asper with a conidial suspension (105 conidia/ml) from the infected plants, with five noninoculated plants serving as control. Inoculated plants developed the original powdery mildew symptoms after 10 days, whereas control plants remained healthy. G. cichoracearum (synonym Erysiphe cichoracearum) is a cosmopolitan powdery mildew fungus, parasitic on numerous plant species in the Asteraceae family. It was reported to be infecting S. asper in Bulgaria (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of G. cichoracearum infections on S. asper in China. S. asper is one of the most important Chinese herbal medicines. The sudden appearance of powdery mildew caused by G. cichoracearum on this plant could result in substantial production loss of S. asper unless fungicide applications are employed. References: (1) U.
