Durante 1986-89 se llevó a cabo un estudio de campo en la Subestación de Lajas para evaluar los herbicidas registrados ametryn, diuron, asulam, hexazinone (Velpar) y metribuzin y los no registrados terbutryn, pendimethalin e imazapyr para controlar la yerba peluda (Roftboellia exaltata) en caña de azúcar en cultivos sucesivos de plantilla y primer retoño. Imazapyr, pendimethalin, terbutryn y ametryn a las dosis recomendadas de 0.28, 1.78, 2.69 y 4.49 kg/ha. controlaron la yerba peluda con efectividad comparable al desyerbo a mano en caña de plantilla. En el retoño todos los herbicidas usados demostraron una efectividad mayor debido, posiblemente, a una menor población del yerbajo. El herbicida imazapyr causó fitotoxicidad a las plántulas de caña, la cual fue más severa en el retoño. Las parcelas tratadas con los herbicidas mencionados produjeron rendimientos de azúcar por hectárea para la plantilla entre 14.92 y 17.02 toneladas comparables estadísticamente con el tratamiento de desyerbo a mano (17.5 tons/ha.), pero superiores significativamente a los de tratamientos de diuron, asulam y el testigo sin desyerbo. La producción de azúcar por ha. para el retoño siguió más o menos el mismo patrón que en la plantilla, excepto que las parcelas tratadas con asulam y diuron produjeron más y las tratadas con imazapyr y ametryn produjeron menos. La producción combinada de azúcar de la plantilla y el retoño en el tratamiento con pendimethalin fue estadísticamente igual que para el desyerbo a mano, pero solo significativamente superior a hexaxinone, imazapyr y el tratamiento sin desyerbar.

The results of the study of toxicity level for the lamb's quarters (Chenopodium album L.) of well-known herbicides used in soybean crops as well as herbicides promising for soybean production in the Far East are presented. Lamb's quarters (Chenopodium album L.) is a highly noxious weed species that is widespread in the south of the region. Weediness monitoring conducted in 2006-2020 showed that this species was present in the Primorsky Territory on 63-100% of fields occupied by soybeans with an average growth density of 3-117 pcs/m2. In 2013-2020 in a series of experiments, conducted in the conditions of the vegetation house and on the experimental fields of the institute, the toxicity level for Common lamb's quarters was determined by 20 herbicides (based on 14 active substances) used in soybean crops. It was found that the control of this weed species is most effective when applying herbicides in the soil and treating plants with a height of up to 4-11 cm at the early stages of development - 1-3 pairs of leaves. Reliable suppression of lamb's quarters in experiments was provided by the soil (before sowing or before soybean seedlings) use of herbicides containing active substances metribuzin, imazetapir, trifluralin, pendimetalin and acetochlor. Among the active ingredients of the tested foliar herbicides, fomesafen, combinations of bentazone + acifluorfen and imazamox + chlorimuron-ethyl were the most toxic for lamb's quarters. It is recommended to use the following herbicidal preparations to control the spread of lamb's quarters: before sowing or sprouting of soybeans - Lazurit, Zenkor Ultra, Pivot, Proponit, Fabian; for processing vegetative plants - Flex, Galaksi Top, Concept, Classic Forte (Harmony Classic), Proponit.

The incidence of volunteer EnlistTM soybean in the post-emergence of crops in succession, such as wheat, requires changes in chemical control. Thus, the objective of the work is to evaluate the efficiency of different post-emergence herbicides in the control of volunteer EnlistTM soybean and wild radish and their selectivity to wheat. For this, four experiments were conducted in 2017 and 2018 in field and greenhouse. The treatments tested were pyroxsulam, saflufenacil, pyroxsulam + saflufenacil, pyroxsulam + bentazon, pyroxsulam + metribuzin, saflufenacil + bentazon, and saflufenacil + metribuzin in 2017, and triclopyr, saflufenacil, MCPA, quinclorac, dicamba, pyroxsulam + metribuzin, metribuzin + metsulfuron, pyroxsulam + bentazon and bentazon + metsulfuron in 2018. The variables were the control of wild radish and volunteer EnlistTM soybean phytotoxicity to wheat crop, yield components, and yield total. The association of the herbicides pyroxsulam and saflufenacil is efficient in the management of volunteer soybean EnlistTM, showing selectivity to wheat. The isolated application of dicamba and the associations of pyroxsulam with metribuzin and metribuzin with metsulfuron represent alternatives for selective management of volunteer EnlistTM soybean in wheat, in addition to efficiently controlling wild radish in post-emergence.

The yield of many crops can be increased by irrigating them with magnetically treated water (MTW). The aim of our research was to determine if the efficacy of a soil-applied herbicide such as metribuzin against weeds could be affected by MTW. A split-plot randomized complete block experiment was designed with two main plots, including potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) irrigated with equal volumes of MTW and non-MTW. Sub-plots were weedy control, weed-free control (hand-weeded), and pre-emergence application of metribuzin at 420 and 525 g a.i. · ha–1. Generally, MTW induced the seed germination and vegetative growth of Amaranthus blitoides S.Watson and Convolvulus arvensis L., resulting in a reduction of the total tuber yield of potato from 1.47 to 1.18 kg · m–2. MTW improved the efficacy of weed control strategies, resulting in an improvement of the total tuber yield and the water use efficiency of potato. The total tuber yield when metribuzin was applied at 420 g a.i. · ha–1 with MTW (3.51 kg · m–2) was more than when metribuzin was applied at 525 g a.i. · ha–1 with non-MTW (2.76 kg · m–2). It can be concluded that the use of MTW can be a safer crop production method by reducing the required dosage of metribuzin to control weeds. Considering the fact that the use of MTW without herbicide application increased the density of weed species, this method should be limited to a scenario where weeds can be effectively controlled.

This research studied the effectiveness of herbicide treatments in weed control and during different periods of emergence, when applied to varying amounts of straw. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with pre-emergent herbicides: amicarbazone, metribuzin, indaziflam, isoxaflutole, amicarbazone + indaziflam, metribuzin + indaziflam, and isoxaflutole + indaziflam, against three species (Sorghum halepense, Rottboellia exaltata, and Mucuna aterrima). The experimental design was completely randomized in a 5x4 factorial scheme, with five amounts of straw (0, 1, 2, 3, and 5 t/ha) and four periods of weed emergence (0, 30, 60, and 90 days after treatments). The residual control of indaziflam was influenced by the amount of straw. Metribuzin presented a low residual control, while isoxaflutole was not affected by the amount of straw. Amicarbazone offered residual control for Mucuna aterrima. The association between indaziflam + isoxaflutole displayed a suitable residual control against Sorghum halepense and Rottboellia exaltata. The association of indaziflam + metribuzin adequately controlled Mucuna aterrima and Sorghum halepense. herbicide physical-chemical characteristics can influence their performance, and the association of products may increase residual and weed spectrum control. Highlights This partial or total removal of remaining sugarcane straw from the soil surface alters weeds dynamics in sugarcane fields. In this situation we have monocot and dicot weeds infesting the sugarcane crops. Among these species, some plants are even more difficult to control, such as Sorghum halepense, Rottboellia exaltata, and Mucuna aterrima Indaziflam herbicide presented a better performance in controlling monocotyledonous plants than eudicot plants. The herbicides amicarbazone and metribuzin presented adequate control of Mucuna aterrima despite having lower residual control. The association of indaziflam + metribuzin, resulted in satisfactory results for Mucuna aterrima, Sorghum halepense, and Rottboellia exaltata.

Tiafenacil is a recently developed protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO)-inhibiting herbicide from the pyrimidinedione chemical class that is proposed for use as a preplant (PP) burndown in soybean. Glyphosate-resistant (GR) horseweed is a troublesome weed often found in no-till systems that can dramatically reduce soybean yield; control in soybean has been variable. Five field experiments were conducted over 2019 and 2020 in commercial soybean fields with GR horseweed to determine the biologically effective dose (BED) of tiafenacil and tiafenacil + metribuzin and to compare their efficacy to currently accepted industry standard herbicide treatments in identity-preserved (IP, non-GMO), GR, and glyphosate/dicamba-resistant (GDR) soybean systems. There was no soybean injury with treatments evaluated. The calculated doses of tiafenacil for 50%, 80%, and 95% control of GR horseweed control were 21, 147, and >200 g ai ha−1, respectively, at 8 wk after application (WAA). Lower doses were calculated with the addition of metribuzin (400 g ai ha−1) to tiafenacil for 50% and 80% control, with no dose of tiafenacil + metribuzin providing 95% control. Tiafenacil + metribuzin at 25 + 400 and 50 + 400 g ai ha−1 controlled GR horseweed 88% and 93%, respectively, which was similar to the industry standards of saflufenacil + metribuzin (25 + 400 g ai ha−1) and glyphosate/dicamba + saflufenacil (1,200/600 + 25 g ai ha−1) that provided 98% and 100% control, respectively, at 8 WAA. This study presents the potential utility of tiafenacil + metribuzin as a GR horseweed management strategy in soybean.

Weeds are a major problem in potato production. Two years of trials were conducted to study the efficacy of herbicides and integrated use of mulch with herbicides in controlling weeds and for improving the growth and yield of autumn potato crop at Ludhiana, north-west India, during autumn 2016 and 2017. Each trial had a randomized complete block design with three replicates. There were 11 treatments including weed-free and weedy controls. Uncontrolled weeds caused a yield reduction of 49.7%. Metribuzin at 350 g/ha pre-emergence resulted in 82.4% weed control efficiency at 30 days after planting but this control was reduced to 23.9% at harvest. In contrast, metribuzin at 350 g/ha applied post-emergence controlled broadleaf weeds and grasses very effectively. Clodinafop at 60 g/ha post-emergence resulted in control of grasses only. The post-emergence application of pre-mix clodinafop plus metribuzin at 260 g/ha provided effective weed control and resulted in more tuber yield and economic returns and was significantly better than an application solely of metribuzin or clodinafop. The integrated weed control treatment of paddy straw mulch (PSM) at 6 t/ha with clodinafop plus metribuzin at 195 g/ha post-emergence resulted in the highest tuber yield with weed control efficiency of 95.3% at harvest. The next best one was an integrated treatment of PSM at 6 t/ha with metribuzin at 275 g/ha pre-emergence.

Striking a balance between the weed control capacity of living mulches and their competition with the main crop is complex. At rates that avoid severe injury to living mulch, herbicides may reduce their vigor while simultaneously contributing to weed control. In a 2-yr field study carried out in Freeville, NY, we evaluated the effects of various combinations consisting of two herbicides, applied sequentially at reduced rates, on the growth of a sunn hemp living mulch and weeds (including common lambsquarters, common purslane, hairy galinsoga, and Powell amaranth). When a herbicide with primarily POST activity (Type 1; e.g., rimsulfuron, 0.005 to 0.007 kg ai ha−1) was applied first, performance of sunn hemp (1700 to 3900 kg ha−1 dry biomass; 10% to 88% groundcover) was poor and weed growth (25% to 62% groundcover) was high, likely because sunn hemp was severely injured at a young growth stage and was outcompeted by weeds. A follow-up application (approximately 2 wk later) of a herbicide with primarily PRE and residual activities (Type 2; e.g., metribuzin, 0.05 to 0.15 kg ai ha−1), with a surfactant to enhance its POST activity, had little effect on established weeds. However, because sunn hemp was already 20 cm tall at weed emergence, applying a Type 2 herbicide first did not cause severe injury to sunn hemp and reduced weed pressure, thereby also enhancing sunn hemp performance (3,800 to 6,100 kg ha−1 dry biomass; 85% to 94% groundcover). Moreover, the follow-up application of a Type 1 herbicide affected the smaller weeds more (4% to 21% groundcover) than the better-established sunn hemp. Our results demonstrate that an appropriate sequence of herbicides at reduced rates may be important to control weeds while maintaining a healthy living mulch stand.

The benefits of no-till fallow, which include reduced soil erosion, improved soil health, and increased stored soil water, are in jeopardy because of the widespread development of glyphosate resistance in Russian thistle. The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of soil-active, residual herbicides for Russian thistle control in no-till fallow. The combinations of sulfentrazone + carfentrazone and flumioxazin + pyroxasulfone, and metribuzin alone were each applied in late fall, late winter, and split-applied in late fall and late winter at three sites: Adams, OR, in 2017–2018; Lind, WA, in 2018–2019; and Ralston, WA, in 2019–2020. All treatments provided good to excellent control of the initial flush of Russian thistle when assessed in mid-May, except the late-fall application of metribuzin at all three sites, and the late-fall application of sulfentrazone + carfentrazone at Adams. Cumulative Russian thistle densities, evaluated monthly throughout the fallow season, were lowest for the sulfentrazone + carfentrazone treatments, except for the late-fall application at Adams. However, flumioxazin + pyroxasulfone and metribuzin provided greater control of tumble mustard and prickly lettuce than did sulfentrazone + carfentazone. Sulfentrazone + carfentrazone, flumioxazin + pyroxasulfone, and metribuzin can all be used for Russian thistle control in fallow. To reduce the risk for crop injury to subsequently planted winter wheat, a late-fall application of sulfentrazone + carfentrazone may be the preferred treatment in low-rainfall regions where winter wheat–fallow is commonly practiced. A late-winter application may be preferred in higher rainfall regions where a 3-year rotation (e.g., winter wheat–spring wheat–fallow) is common. Flumioxazin + pyroxasulfone should be considered if other broadleaf weeds, such as tumble mustard or prickly lettuce, are of concern. The use of these soil-applied herbicides will reduce the need for the frequent application of glyphosate for Russian thistle control in no-till fallow.

Italian ryegrass [Lolium perenne L. spp. multiflorum (Lam.) Husnot] is one of the most troublesome weeds worldwide. Lolium multiflorum is also a grass seed crop cultivated on 50,000 ha in Oregon, where both diploid and tetraploid cultivars are grown. For this work, we will refer to the species as L. multiflorum, since the common names annual ryegrass and Italian ryegrass both refer to the same species. A survey was conducted to understand the distribution and frequency of L. multiflorum and its susceptibility to selected herbicides used in its control. The herbicides selected were clethodim, glufosinate, glyphosate, mesosulfuron-methyl (mesosulfuron), paraquat, pinoxaden, pyroxsulam, quizalofop-P-ethyl (quizalofop), pronamide, flufenacet + metribuzin, and pyroxasulfone. The ploidy levels of the populations were also tested. A total of 150 fields were surveyed between 2017 and 2018, of which 75 (50%) had L. multiflorum present. Herbicide-resistant populations were documented in 88% of the 75 populations collected. The most frequent resistances were to acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), acetolactate synthase (ALS), 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) inhibitors, and combinations thereof. Multiple resistance and cross-resistance, found in 75% of the populations, were the most frequent patterns of resistance. Paraquat-resistant biotypes were confirmed in six orchard crop populations for the first time in Oregon. Herbicide resistance was spatially clustered, with most cases of resistance in the northern part of the surveyed area. Populations resistant to ALS and ACCase inhibitors were prevalent in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) fields. Multiple resistance was positively correlated with plant density. Tetraploid feral populations were identified, but no cases of herbicide resistance were documented. This is the first survey of herbicide resistance and ploidy diversity in L. multiflorum in western Oregon. Resistant populations were present across the surveyed area, indicating that the problem is widespread.

A study was initiated in Instruction-cum-Research Farm of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat-13, Assam, India during 2014-15 and 2015-16. The objective of this experiment is to understand the impact of legume intercropping system in combination with different weed management practices on the growth indices of ginger crop. Nadia, a commercially grown variety of ginger in Assam was examined in the current study. A total of 16 treatment combinations were considered which comprised of 4 intercropping systems along with 4 weed management practices. Amongst the legume intercropping, Cowpea in between rows of Ginger; incorporated at 40 days after sowing (DAS) and Cowpea in alternate rows of Ginger; incorporated at 40 DAS recorded better results in terms of Leaf area index (LAI), Crop growth rate (CGR), Absolute growth rate (AGR) and yield of Nadia variety ginger. Whereas amongst the weed management practices, pre-emergence application of Metribuzin 500 g ai ha-1 + hand weeding (HW) at 70, 100 and 140 days after planting (DAP) scored higher in growth indices and ginger yield, but neither the legume intercropping systems nor the weed management treatments had any significant impact on harvest index.

Kochia accessions (designated as KS-4A and KS-4H) collected from a corn field near Garden City, KS, have previously shown multiple resistance to glyphosate, dicamba, and fluroxypyr. These accessions were also suspected as being resistant to photosystem II (PS II) inhibitors. The main objectives of this research were to 1) confirm the coexistence of cross-resistance to PS II inhibitors (atrazine and metribuzin) applied PRE and POST, 2) investigate the underlying mechanism of PS II-inhibitor resistance, and 3) determine the effectiveness of alternative POST herbicides for control of these multiple herbicide–resistant (MHR) kochia accessions. Results from dose-response experiments revealed that the KS-4A and KS-4H kochia accessions were 23-fold to 48-fold resistant to PRE- and POST-applied atrazine and 13-fold to 18-fold resistant to POST-applied metribuzin compared to a known susceptible kochia accession (KS-SUS). Both accessions also showed putative resistance to PRE-applied metribuzin that needs to be confirmed. Sequence analyses of the psbA gene further revealed that all samples from the KS-4A and KS-4H kochia accessions had a Ser264Gly point mutation. A pretreatment with malathion followed by a POST application of atrazine at 1,120 g ha−1 or metribuzin at 630 g ha−1 did not reverse the resistance phenotypes of these MHR accessions. In a separate greenhouse study, alternative POST herbicides, including bicyclopyrone + bromoxynil; bromoxynil + pyrasulfotole; paraquat alone or in combination with atrazine, metribuzin, 2,4-D, or saflufenacil; and saflufenacil alone or in combination with 2,4-D effectively controlled the KS-4H accession (≥97% injury). To our knowledge, this research reports the first case of kochia accessions with cross-resistance to PRE-applied atrazine and POST-applied metribuzin. Growers should adopt diversified weed control strategies, including the use of competitive crops, cover crops, targeted tillage, and harvest weed seed control along with effective alternative PRE and POST herbicides with multiple sites of action to control MHR kochia seedbanks on their production fields.

The aim of the current study was to track the composition, spatial and temporal distribution charactistics of triazine herbicides in arable soils and corns in typical agricultural regions of Liaoning Province, China. All samples were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Twelve kinds of triazine herbicides were found including atrazine, simazine, prometryn, propazine, ametryn, metribuzin, simetryn, aziprotryne, cyanizine, atrazine-desethyl, atrazine-desisopropyl and atrazine-desethyl-desisopropyl in the soil samples, of which atrazine, simazine, prometryn, atrazine-desethyl and atrazine-desethyl-desisopropyl were proved to be the predominant species with a high incidence though relatively low contamination level. The maximum concentration of atrazine in the soils was 73.80 µg·kg-1. Five kinds of triazine herbicides were found in corns in the region including atrazine, simazine, prometryn, atrazine-desethyl and atrazine-desethyl-desisopropyl with the detection rate 96.4%, 17.8%, 14.3%, 60.7% and 46.4%, respectively. The maximum contaminant level of atrazine in corns was 12.52 µg·kg-1, which is lower than that regulated in the National Standard of the People's Republic of China (GB2763-2012).

Glyphosate-resistant horseweed is difficult to manage in no-tillage crop production fields and new strategies are needed. Cover crops may provide an additional management tool but narrow establishment windows and colder growing conditions in northern climates may limit the cover crop biomass required to suppress horseweed. Field experiments were conducted in 3 site-years in Michigan to investigate the effects of two fall-planted cover crops, cereal rye and winter wheat, seeded at 67 or 135 kg ha−1, to suppress horseweed when integrated with three preplant herbicide strategies in no-tillage soybean. The preplant strategies were control (glyphosate only), preplant herbicide without residuals (glyphosate + 2,4-D), and preplant herbicide with residuals (glyphosate + 2,4-D + flumioxazin + metribuzin). Cereal rye produced 79% more biomass and provided 12% more ground cover than winter wheat in 2 site-years. Increasing seeding rate provided 41% more cover biomass in 1 site-year. Cover crops reduced horseweed density 47% to 96% and horseweed biomass by 59% to 70% compared with no cover at the time of cover crop termination. Cover crops provided no additional horseweed suppression 5 wk after soybean planting if a preplant herbicide with or without residuals was applied, but reduced horseweed biomass greater than 33% in the absence of preplant herbicides. Cover crops did not affect horseweed suppression at the time of soybean harvest or influence soybean yield. Preplant herbicide with residuals and without residuals provided at least 52% and 20% greater soybean yield compared with the control at 2 site-years, respectively. Cereal rye and winter wheat provided early-season horseweed suppression at biomass levels below 1,500 kg ha−1, lower than previously reported. This could give growers in northern climates an effective strategy for suppressing horseweed through the time of POST herbicide application while reducing selection pressure for horseweed that is resistant to more herbicide sites of action.

Horseweed and giant ragweed are competitive, annual weeds that can negatively impact crop yield. Biotypes of glyphosate-resistant (GR) giant ragweed and horseweed were first reported in 2008 and 2010 in Ontario, respectively. GR horseweed has spread throughout the southern portion of the province. The presence of GR biotypes poses new challenges for soybean producers in Canada and the United States. Halauxifen-methyl is a recently registered selective herbicide against broadleaf weeds for preplant use in corn and soybean. There is limited literature on the efficacy of halauxifen-methyl on GR horseweed and giant ragweed when combined with currently registered products in Canada. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of halauxifen-methyl applied alone and tank-mixed to control GR giant ragweed and GR horseweed in glyphosate and dicamba-resistant (GDR) soybean in southwestern Ontario. Six field experiments were conducted separately for each weed species over 2018 and 2019. Halauxifen-methyl applied alone offered 72% control of GR horseweed at 8 wk after application (WAA). Control was improved to >91% when halauxifen-methyl applied in combination with metribuzin, saflufenacil, chlorimuron-ethyl + metribuzin, and saflufenacil + metribuzin. At 8 WAA, halauxifen-methyl provided 11% control of GR giant ragweed, and 76% to 88% control when glyphosate/2,4-D choline, glyphosate/dicamba, glyphosate/2,4-D choline + halauxifen-methyl, and glyphosate/dicamba + halauxifen-methyl were used. We conclude that halauxifen-methyl applied preplant in a tank-mixture can provide effective control of GR giant ragweed and horseweed in GDR soybean. Little is known about best herbicidal weed option for weed eradication in soybean in agro-climatic circumstances of Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan. A two year field study was accomplished at College of Agriculture experimental site Sargodha in spring seasons of 2018 and 2019 to evaluate the efficacy of different herbicides adjacent to major weeds present in soybean. The study consisted of 8 herbicide treatments including two pre-emergence herbicides (pendimethalin at 489.1 g a.i. ha-1, pendimethalin + S-metolachlor at 731.1 g a.i. ha-1) which are applied immediately after sowing and six post-emergence herbicides (oxyfluorfen at 237.1 g a.i. ha-1, metribuzin at 518.7 g a.i. ha-1, quizalofop-p-ethyl at 148.2 g a.i. ha-1, acetochlor at 741 g a.i. ha-1, halosulfuron at 37 g a.i. ha-1and topramezone at 21.5 g a.iha-1) which were used 25 days subsequent to sowing. In contrast to control, all herbicides have shown significant decline in weed density (up to 94%) and dry weight (up to 88%); and caused significant increases in plant height (up to 85%), pod bearing branches (up to 77%), number of pods per plant (up to 83%), 100-seed weight (up to 37%) and seed yield (up to 160%) of soybean. Among herbicides, topramezone at 21.5 g a.i ha-1 gave significantly the highest (1234 and 1272 kg ha-1 in the year 2018 and 2019) seed yield of soybean and HEIs (1.28 and 1.03 in year 2018 and 2019, respectively). However, oxyfluorfen at 237.1 g a.i. ha-1, pendimethalin + S-metolachlor at 731.1 g a.i. ha-1, pendimethalin at 489.1 g a.i. ha-1, quizalofop-p-ethyl at 148.2 g a.i.ha-1 followed it. The regression analysis depicted a significant negative moderate relationship of soybean seed yield with weed dry weight (R2 = 0.7074), and pods per plant (R2 = 0.7012) was proved to be the main yield component responsible for higher yield of soybean.

The herbicidal activity of long-acting formulations of metribuzin and tribenuron methyl herbicides embedded in granules prepared from a mixture of degradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and birch wood flour was studied in laboratory-grown weeds of various species and in wheat Triticum aestivum and barley Hordeum vulgare stands infested by weeds. The constructed formulations effectively suppressed all species of weeds studied. The biological effectiveness of herbicide formulations toward intact plants in wheat and barley stands infested with weeds was close to 100%, which was significantly higher than the effect of their free forms. The more effective suppression of weeds by embedded herbicides was beneficial for the growth of crops whose aboveground biomass was 8–13 to 20% greater than that of the crops in the treatments with free herbicides. Embedded metribuzin and tribenuron methyl exhibit sustained and pronounced herbicidal activity and are effective for pre-emergence soil application for crops infested with weeds of various species.

Establishment of alfalfa by interseeding it with corn planted for silage can enhance crop productivity but weed management is a challenge to adoption of the practice. Although a simple and effective approach to weed management would be to apply a glyphosate-based herbicide, concerns about herbicide resistance and limitations in available alfalfa varieties exist. Field experiments were conducted to compare the efficacy and selectivity of PRE, POST, and PRE followed by POST herbicide programs to a glyphosate-only strategy when interseeding alfalfa with corn. Experiment 1 compared PRE applications of acetochlor, mesotrione, S-metalochlor, metribuzin, and flumetsulam. Results indicate that acetochlor and metribuzin, and S-metalochlor used at a rate of 1.1 kg ai ha−1 were the most effective and selective PRE herbicides 4 wk after treatment (WAT), but each resulted in greater overall weed cover than glyphosate by 8 WAT. Experiment 2 evaluated applications of bentazon, bromoxynil, 2,4-DB, and mesotrione at early and late POST times. Several herbicides used POST exhibited similar effectiveness and selectivity as glyphosate, including early applications of bromoxynil (0.14 kg ai ha−1) and 2,4-DB (0.84 or 1.68 kg ai ha−1), as well as late applications of bromoxynil (0.42 kg ai ha−1), 2,4-DB (0.84 kg ai ha−1), and mesotrione (0.05 or 0.11 kg ai ha−1). A third experiment compared applications of acetochlor PRE, bromoxynil POST, and a combination of acetochlor PRE with bromoxynil POST. All treatments were effective and safe for use in this interseeded system, although interseeded alfalfa provided 65% to 70% weed suppression in corn planted for silage without any herbicide. Herbicide treatments had no observable impacts on corn and alfalfa yields, so weed management was likely of limited economic importance. However, weed competitiveness can vary based on several different factors including weed species, density, and site-specific factors, and so further investigations under different environments and conditions are needed.

Competition with weeds and lack of selective herbicides registered for bird’s-foot trefoil crops affect their development and limit productivity. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating selectivity of pre-emergent herbicides in bird’s-foot trefoil crops. Experiments were carried out in a greenhouse and on a field where the following herbicides were evaluated and compared with the control: imazethapyr, diclosulam, flumetsulam, metribuzin, s-metolachlor, sulfentrazone, clomazone and isoxaflutole. Regarding variables under evaluation, phytotoxicity (PHYTO), plant stature, dry mass of the aerial part (DMAP) and dry mass of roots (DMR) were evaluated in the greenhouse, while plant population, PHYTO and DMAP were assessed on the field. The criterion to determine selectivity were: PHYTO below 15% and not reducing the plant population nor morphological variables, by comparison with the control. The variables were negatively affected by the herbicides clomazone, metribuzin, isoxaflutole, diclosulam, s-metolachlor, in which the crop population was reduced in 98, 92, 83, 63, 48 and 22%, respectively. Following the criteria, only the herbicide sulfentrazone as a pre-emergente is selective to bird’s-foot trefoil crop (cultivar ‘Sao Gabriel’).

Sugarcane is the most adaptable plant under varied ecological conditions and the critical period of crop-weed competition has been recorded to be 60-120 days after planting in spring cane and 150 days in autumn cane (Singh et al., 2011). The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the Effect of different doses of Halosulfuron methyl 6% + Metribuzin 50% on weed management in sugarcane an experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research farm of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh during spring seasons of 2018-19. The maximum suppression of total weed density, total weed biomass and the highest weed control efficiency were obtained with post-emergence application of halosulfuron methyl 6% + metribuzin 50% WG 1.25 kg ha-1 better than pre-emergence application of halosulfuron methyl 6% + metribuzin 50% WG 1.25 kg ha-1.

The present work was conducted at Shandaweel Research Station (Sohag Governorate, Egypt) Farm during 2017 and 2018 seasons to investigate the effects of preceding crop (wheat, clover, barley and faba bean) and weed control treatments (butralin at the rate of 2.5 l/fed (fed= 4200 m2), flauzifop-p-butyl at the rate of 1.5 l/fed + metribuzin at the rate of 300 cm3/fed, clethodim at the rate of 500 cm3/fed + metribuzin, hand hoeing twice at 30 and 45 days after sowing and untreated) on nodules, weeds and yield of soybean crop during 2017 and 20018 seasons. Using clover as preceding crop significantly decreased the dry weight of grassy, broad-leaved and total weeds (g/m2) compared to unweeded treatment and increased the number and weight of nodules in the both seasons. Also, it increased significantly plant height, number of branches, number and weight of pods/plant, seeds/pod and plant, seed index, seed yield (ton/fed) seed oil and protein % of soybean in the both seasons. Weed control treatments reduced the dry weight of grassy weeds, broad-leaved and total weeds compared with unweeded control in the both seasons. Amex, flauzifop-p-butyl and bentazon decreased the activity of nodules and weight of nodules in comparison with hand hoeing and unweeded treatments. Application of weed control treatments highly increase plant height, number of branches/plant, number and weight of pods/plant, seeds/pod, seed index, seed yield (ton/fed) seed oil and protein % of soybean crop and as well as seed yield (ton/fed) in the both seasons. The interaction between preceding crop and weed control treatments had a significant effect on the all studied traits in both seasons. Thus, dry weight weeds (g/m2), number and weight of nodules were decreased underplanting of soybean after clover and wheat compared with planting of soybean after barely and faba bean in 2017 and 2018 seasons. Fusilade super + Sencor, Select super + Sencor and hand hoeing twice gave the highest reduction on number and weight of nodules, dry weight of grassy, broad-leaved and total weeds (g/m2) underplanting of soybean after clover and wheat compared with planting of soybean after barely and faba bean and unweeded treatments in both seasons. Fusilade super + Sencor, Select super + Sencor and hand hoeing twice gave increased number and weight of pods/plant, weight of seeds/pod and plant, seed index, seed yield (ton/fed), seed oil % and protein % underplanting of soybean after clover and wheat compared with planting of soybean after barley and faba bean and unweeded treatments in the both seasons.

Field studies were conducted in 2018 and 2019 in Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Tennessee to determine if cover-crop residue interfered with herbicides that provide residual control of Palmer amaranth and waterhemp in no-till soybean. The experiments were established in the fall with planting of cover crops (cereal rye + hairy vetch). Herbicide treatments consisted of a nontreated or no residual, acetochlor, dimethenamid-P, flumioxazin, pyroxasulfone + flumioxazin, pendimethalin, metribuzin, pyroxasulfone, and S-metolachlor. Palmer amaranth took 18 d and waterhemp took 24 d in the cover crop–alone (nontreated) treatment to reach a height of 10 cm. Compared with this treatment, all herbicides except metribuzin increased the number of days until 10-cm Palmer amaranth was present. Flumioxazin applied alone or in a mixture with pyroxasulfone were the best at delaying Palmer amaranth growing to a height of 10 cm (35 d and 33 d, respectively). The herbicides that resulted in the lowest Palmer amaranth density (1.5 to 4 times less) integrated with a cover crop were pyroxasulfone + flumioxazin, flumioxazin, pyroxasulfone, and acetochlor. Those four herbicide treatments also delayed Palmer amaranth emergence for the longest period (27 to 34 d). Waterhemp density was 7 to 14 times less with acetochlor than all the other herbicides present. Yield differences were observed for locations with waterhemp. This research supports previous research indicating that utilizing soil-residual herbicides along with cover crops improves control of Palmer amaranth and/or waterhemp.Nomenclature: Acetochlor; flumioxazin; pyroxasulfone; S-metolachlor; Palmer amaranth, Amaranthus palmeri S. Metribuzin is a synthetic organic compound used as a selective Triazinone herbicide, incorporated as a post-emergent soil applied herbicide to control weeds in wheat, potato, tomato and others. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of Metribuzin on the environment and human health. Human exposure to Metribuzin occurs through inhalation and ingestion, usually in agricultural settings. Farmers' occupational exposure to Metribuzin is highly variable and complex depending on the farm but Few studies have assessed the exposure of the population to this herbicide. Metribuzin can accumulate in soil and water and cause damage to flora and fauna. furthermore, Herbicides Metribuzin have a very variable toxicity, in the short term it can cause acute intoxication which can cause breathing and difficult drowsiness but the high exposures can cause stomach aches, fatigue and depression of the central nervous system, on the other hand in the long term and with strong exposure or other repeated it can cause modifications of the hepatic enzymes, disturbance in the kidneys, can affect the reproduction, the endocrine function and oxidant/antioxidant system imbalance. This study highlights on the undesirable effect of Metribuzin which allows to affirm their toxicity even at low doses, is not only following an occupational exposure, but also for the general population by their use of treated agricultural products by these pesticides, which poses a real public health problem. Accordingly, it is imperative that farmers avoid their use and replace them with biological fertilizers that are less harmful to human and animal health.

Herbicide contamination of nearshore tropical marine ecosystems is widespread and persistent; however, risks posed by most ‘alternative’ herbicides to tropical marine microalgae remain poorly understood. Experimental exposures of the important but understudied microalgae Rhodomonas salina to seven individual Photosystem II (PSII) inhibitor herbicides (diuron, metribuzin, hexazinone, tebuthiuron, bromacil, simazine, propazine) led to inhibition of effective quantum yield (ΔF/Fm′) and subsequent reductions in specific growth rates (SGR). The concentrations which reduced ΔF/Fm′ by 50% (EC50) ranged from 1.71-59.2 µg L−1, while the EC50s for SGR were 4-times higher, ranging from 6.27-188 µg L−1. Inhibition of ΔF/Fm′ indicated reduced photosynthetic capacity, and this correlated linearly with reduced SGR (R2 = 0.89), supporting the application of ∆F/Fm’ inhibition as a robust and sensitive indicator of sub-lethal toxicity of PSII inhibitors for this microalga. The three non-PSII inhibitor herbicides (imazapic, haloxyfop and 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)) caused low or no toxic responses to the function of the PSII or growth at the highest concentrations tested suggesting these herbicides pose little risk to R. salina. This study highlights the suitability of including R. salina in future species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) to support water quality guideline development for the management of herbicide contamination in tropical marine ecosystems.

As a control measure against weeds, the use of herbicides is an effective and inexpensive alternative. However, there are no products recommended for the cultivation of cowpea in Brazil, making it necessary to search for alternative solutions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of herbicides applied in the pre- and post-emergence on cowpea nodulation and production under conditions of the Amazonian savannah. Two experiments were carried out in a randomized block design with four replicates, using the cowpea cultivar BRS Aracê subjected to the pre-emergence herbicides: Metribuzin, Sulfentrazone, S-metolachlor, Pendimethalin, Oxadiazon, Alachlor, Metribuzin + Pendimethalin, Metribuzin + Alachlor and Quizalofop-p-ethyl, Bentazon, Fomesafen, Imazethapyr, Imazamox + Bentazon, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Imazethapyr, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Ima-zamox and Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Bentazon, and post-emergence herbicides: Quizalofop-p-ethyl, Bentazon, Fomesafen, Imazetha-pyr, Imazamox + Bentazon, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Imazethapyr, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Imazamox, and Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Bentazon. The number of nodules in each plant, the dry matter of nodules, dry matter of roots and the grain yield were evaluated. According to the results obtained, the management of weeds in pre- or post-emergence according to the herbicide used affects the nodulation and productivity of cowpea under the conditions of the Amazonian savannah. The herbicides Metribuzin in pre-emergence, and Fomesafen and the mixture of Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Imazethapyr in post-emergence are not recommended for weed control in cowpea. The application of Oxadiazon, Alachlor, and Pendimethalin in pre-emergence can be considered interesting because they do not inhibit the development of the root system or the nodulation of cowpea which provides a greater grain yield. Regarding weed control strategies at post-emergence, the application of the herbicide Imazethapyr and the combination of the herbicides quizalofop-p-ethyl + imazamox, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Bentazon and Imazamox + Bentazon allow satisfactory levels of grain yield, root system development and nodulation of cowpea. RESUMEN Como medida de control contra las malezas, el uso de herbicidas es una alternativa efectiva y asequible. Sin embargo, no hay productos recomendados para el cultivo de frijol caupí en Brasil, por lo que es necesario buscar soluciones alternativas. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de herbicidas aplicados en pre- y post-emergencia sobre la nodulación y productividad del frijol caupí bajo las condiciones de la sabana amazónica. Se realizaron dos experimentos en bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones, utilizando el cultivar de frijol caupí BRS Aracê sometido a los herbicidas pre-emergentes: Metribuzina, Sulfentrazona, S-metolaclor, Pendimetalina, Oxadiazón, Alaclor, Metribuzina + Pendimetalina, Metribuzina + Alaclor y Quizalofop-p-etil, Bentazona, Fomesafen, Imazetapir, Imazamox + Bentazona, Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazetapir, Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazamox y Quizalofop-p-etil + Bentazona, y herbicidas post-emergentes: Quizalofop-p-etil, Bentazona, Fomesafen, Imazetapir, Imazamox + Bentazona, Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazetapir, Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazamox, Quizalofop-p-etil + Bentazona. Se evaluaron el número de nódulos por planta, la masa seca de nódulos, la masa seca de raíces y el rendimiento de grano. Según los resultados obtenidos en este estudio, el manejo de malezas en pre o post-emer-gencia de acuerdo con el herbicida utilizado afecta la nodulación y el rendimiento de grano de frijol caupí bajo condiciones de la sabana amazónica. Los herbicidas Metribuzina en pre-emergen-cia, y Fomesafen y la mezcla de Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazetapir en post-emergencia no se recomiendan para el control de malezas en frijol caupí. La aplicación de Oxadiazón, Alaclor y Pendimetalina en la pre-emergencia puede considerarse interesante porque no inhiben el desarrollo del sistema radicular o la nodulación de frijol caupí lo que proporciona un mayor rendimiento de grano. En lo relacionado con las estrategias de control de malezas posteriores a la emergencia, la aplicación del herbicida Imazetapir y la combinación de los herbicidas Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazamox, Quizalofop-p-etil + Bentazona e Imazamox + Bentazona permiten niveles satisfactorios de rendimiento de grano, desarrollo del sistema de raíces y nodulación de frijol caupí.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the combined effect of brown manuring with post emergence herbicide on weed management in planted sugarcane. Weeds are one of the major biotic stress and its management was the very costliest agronomic input in the successful crop production. Weeds can cause yield reduction in sugarcane up to 40%. Indiscriminate use of herbicides can accelerate weed flora shift and resistance besides causing environmental pollution and non-target toxicities and. Brown manuring is a no till version of green manuring using a post emergence herbicide. For brown manuring, Sesbania is grown as intercrop with sugarcane for initial 35 days, and then, is knocked down by 2,4-D. BM had multiple benefits including weed management. In Sugarcane its wider inter row space and its initial slow growth would allow to formulate an integrated weed management (IWM) module with brown manuring and herbicide. Therefore, this experiment was undertaken at Agricultural Collage and Research Institute, Madurai during 2016 to 2018 to evaluate the integrated effect of brown manure and herbicide on weed management in sugarcane. Among nine treatments, three were BM of sesbania and three were in- situ incorporation of sesbania, involving one intercultural operation at 90 DAP (Hand hoeing; Metribuzin: halosulfuron application). In addition, three controls, namely atrazine 1 kg /ha + power weeeding at 45 & 75 DAP, hand weeding twice and unweeded control were also adopted and the experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. A pre-emergence application of pendimethalin 2.0 kg/ha was made in all sesbaniarasied treatments. The results showed that application of pendimethalin 2.0 kg ha-1 + Sesbania (brown manuring) + hand hoeing at 90 DAP recorded minimum number of weeds and weed dry weight. The higher weed control efficiency (78.96%), cane yield (100.5 t /ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.72) were found with PE application of Pendimethalin + Sesbania(Brown manuring) + hand hoeing at 90 DAP compared to POE herbicides and insitu incorporation of Sesbania.

Palmer amaranth is one of the most troublesome weeds of soybean in the United States. To effectively control this weed it is necessary to optimize timing of PRE residual herbicides to mitigate Palmer amaranth emergence. Field studies were conducted in 5 site-years to assess the effect of application timing 12 to 16 d prior to planting (preplant) and at planting (PRE) on soybean injury and longevity of Palmer amaranth control using five residual herbicide treatments. A reduction in longevity of Palmer amaranth control was observed when S-metolachlor + metribuzin and flumioxazin + chlorimuron-ethyl were applied preplant vs. PRE in 2 of the 5 site years. Sulfentrazone, sulfentrazone + cloransulam-methyl, and saflufenacil + dimethenamid-P + pyroxasulfone + metribuzin did not reduce longevity of Palmer amaranth control when applied preplant vs. PRE in all 5 site-years. Visible estimates of soybean injury were lower at 21 d after planting when herbicides were applied 12 to 16 d preplant vs. PRE. These findings suggest that preplant applications can be used to reduce the potential for crop injury and may not result in reduced longevity of control when herbicides with a prolonged residual activity are used. Preplant herbicides increase the likelihood of the residuals being activated prior to subsequent weed emergence as opposed to PRE herbicides applied at soybean planting.

Atrazine offers growers a reliable option to control a broad spectrum of weeds in grain sorghum production systems when applied PRE or POST. However, because of the extensive use of atrazine in grain sorghum and corn, it has been found in groundwater in the United States. Given this issue, field experiments were conducted in 2017 and 2018 in Fayetteville and Marianna, Arkansas, to explore the tolerance of grain sorghum to applications of assorted photosystem II (PSII)-inhibiting herbicides in combination with S-metolachlor (PRE and POST) or mesotrione (POST only) as atrazine replacements. All experiments were designed as a factorial, randomized complete block; the two factors were (1) PSII herbicide and (2) the herbicide added to create the mixture. The PSII herbicides were prometryn, ametryn, simazine, fluometuron, metribuzin, linuron, diuron, atrazine, and propazine. The second factor consisted of either no additional herbicide, S-metolachlor, or mesotrione; however, mesotrione was excluded in the PRE experiments. Crop injury estimates, height, and yield data were collected or calculated in both studies. In the PRE study, injury was less than 10% for all treatments except those containing simazine, which caused 11% injury 28 d after application (DAA). Averaged over PSII herbicide, S-metolachlor–containing treatments caused 7% injury at 14 and 28 DAA. Grain sorghum in atrazine-containing treatments yielded 97% of the nontreated. Grain sorghum receiving other herbicide treatments had significant yield loss due to crop injury, compared with atrazine-containing treatments. In the POST study, ametryn- and prometryn-containing treatments were more injurious than all other treatments 14 DAA. Grain sorghum yield in all POST treatments was comparable to atrazine, except prometryn plus mesotrione, which was 65% of the nontreated. More herbicides should be evaluated to find a comparable fit to atrazine when applied PRE in grain sorghum. However, when applied POST, diuron, fluometuron, linuron, metribuzin, propazine, and simazine have some potential to replace atrazine in terms of crop tolerance and should be further tested as part of a weed control program across a greater range of environments. Two field experiments were carried out in the Farm of Agricultural Research and Experimental Center of Agriculture Faculty at Moshtohor, Benha University, Qalyubia Governorate, Egypt, during 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons. The study were investigated the effect of three planting distances, i.e. 20, 25 and 30 cm between hills with six weed control treatments, i.e. acetochlor at rate of 840 g active ingredient (a.i)/fed (Harness 84 % EC), pendimethalin at rate of 773.5 g a.i/fed (Stomp extra 45.5 % CS), metribuzin at rate of 210 g a.i/fed (Sencor 70 % WP), bentazon at rate of 240 g a.i/fed (Basagran 48 % AS) + clethodium at rate of 62.5 g a.i/fed (Select super 12.5 % EC), hand hoeing twice and the unweeded check on growth, seed yield/fed and its yield components of faba bean cv. Giza 843 as well as associated weeds. Faba bean planted at narrow planting distance (20 cm between hills) gave the lowest values of weed biomass compared with the other two planting distances (25 and 30 cm between hills) at 70 days after sowing as well as produced the greatest values of leaf area index, plant height and seed yield/fed during the both seasons. While, the highest values of No. of branches, No. of pods, No. of seeds and seed weight/plant as well as 100-seed weight were obtained from planting faba bean at wide planting distance (30 cm between hills) in the both seasons. The main findings show that experimental field was infested by annual weeds for the unweeded check by 659.9 and 1041.8 kg dry weight of weeds/fed, exhibited seed yield loss of 74.82 and 79.65 % faba bean yield/fed compared with the best treatment (hand hoeing twice) in 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons, respectively, planting faba bean under hand hoeing twice or using bentazon + clethodium surpassed the other weed control treatments in depressing weed biomass at 70 days after faba bean sowing. On the other hand, the two treatments gave the greatest values of all faba bean traits without significant difference between them. The highest depression in weed biomass and the maximum values of plant height and seed yield/fed were recorded from planting faba bean at 20 cm between hills and weed control by hand hoeing twice or using bentazon + clethodium. While, the greatest values of No. of pods/plant, No. of seeds/plant and seed weight/plant in both seasons which obtained from planting faba bean at wide planting distance (30 cm between hills) under weed control by hand hoeing twice or using bentazon + clethodium. Analyzing the faba bean seeds found that there was no residual detected of herbicides used. The economic analysis indicate that planting faba bean at 20 cm between hills and weed control by hand hoeing twice gave the net benefit valued 10435 and 8465 L.E./fed in the first and second seasons, respectively without herbicides residues. It could be summarized that planting faba bean cv. Giza 843 at planting distance 20 cm between hills with using hand hoeing twice or chemical control by bentazon + clethodium depression weed biomass and maximized seed yield/fed accompanied with the highest values of gross income, net benefit and benefit/cost and without herbicides residues.

Field bindweed is a deep-rooted and drought-tolerant perennial weed that can hardly be controlled once it has become established in wheat. Field experiments were carried out to investigate the control of field bindweed and winter wheat response to pyroxasulfone, metribuzin, dicamba, and a mixture of pyroxasulfone plus metribuzin plus dicamba, mesosulfuron, 2,4-D, 2,4-D plus mesosulfuron. The above-mentioned herbicides were applied at the 3-4 leaf stage and at the wheat tillering phase as well, depending on label recommendations. Experiments were performed in the Nemchinovka and Sokalova, Moscow regions in the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Controlling field bindweed was different depending on region and crop year. The reason for the variable weed control between the two regions are that there were fewer colder days after the Nemchinovka applications than there were after the Sokalova applications. The most consistent and greatest field bindweed control (87 to 97%) occurred with pyroxasulfone applied at the tillering stage in both regions. Pyroxasulfone application at the wheat tillering stage affected the control of field bindweed ranging from 69 to 90%. The least field bindweed control (25%) was obtained for mesosulfuron when applied at the 3-4 leaf stage. Wheat injury observed in response to herbicide treatments was minimal and less than 17% and transient; wheat recovered with no differences in yield. These herbicides can be safely applied in winter wheat for field bindweed control in the Moscow region.

At present, herbicides are widely used in agriculture all over the world because of expanding input cost, decision of use of herbicides because of quick weed control in cropped and non-cropped areas. In India, herbicides are used up to 30% during the recent 10 years. Herbicides kill the weeds but they also effect on soil, crop, underground water, plants, animals, humans and cause pollution of soil and environment. Some herbicides are reside in the soil and water and they effect on the microbes in soil, effect on the next crop, reside in grain and straw, damage flora and fauna of water and spread the diseases.The herbicides monitored were Fluroxypyr, Methabenzthiazuron, Imazamethabenz, Linuron, Aclonifen, Diclofopmethyl, Pendimethalin, Propyzamide, Trifluralin, Metolachlor, Chlortoluron, 2,4-DB, MCPA, Atrazine, Simazin, Terbuthylazine, Metoxuron, Monuron, Diuron, Metobromuron, Tribenuron-methyl, Mecoprop, Chloroxuron, 2,4,5-TB, Neburon, Prometryn, Metribuzin, Cyanazin etc. All of them are responsible for toxicity to humans and animals as well as these leave residues in soil and crop produce.

Japanese stiltgrass is regarded as one of the most troublesome invasive species in the United States. It is commonly found invading forested areas; however, more recently it has been noted to be invading golf course roughs and out-of-play areas. The purpose of this study was to evaluate POST herbicide control of Japanese stiltgrass in golf course and highly maintained turfgrass facilities. None of the treatments provided >80% Japanese stiltgrass control 2 wk after treatment (WAT). At 4 WAT >80% Japanese stiltgrass control was observed with MSMA, MSMA + metribuzin, amicarbazone, and sethoxydim, whereas metsulfuron, pinoxaden, and imazapic provided minimum control. By 8 WAT, MSMA, MSMA + metribuzin, amicarbazone, and sethoxydim provided >98% control, whereas quinclorac, metsulfuron, pinoxaden, and imazapic provided no visible control. Thiencarbazone-methyl + foramsulfuron + halosulfuron-methyl, and sulfentrazone provided limited (≤60%) control. This study indicates that POST control of Japanese stiltgrass can be achieved with MSMA, MSMA + metribuzin, amicarbazone, and sethoxydim. Future research should include long-term control over multiple growing seasons, repeat applications of herbicides, and evaluation of herbicides in combination for increased and longer-term Japanese stiltgrass control.

The effective and eco-friendly way of weed management in tomato is essential for safer produce and clean environment. Accordingly, the experiment was conducted with chemical and non-chemical methods of weed management in tomato. The experiment consisted of nine treatments viz., four herbicides with and without hand weeding on 45 DAT viz., pendimethalin 1.00kg a.i. ha-1, oxyflourfen 0.125kg a.i./ha, metribuzin 0.50kg a.i. ha-1, fluchloralin 1.00kg a.i. ha-1 compared against non-chemical methods viz., the black polythene mulch (8m) was laid out at one day before transplanting, manual weeding and weedy check (control).Different weed control treatments significantly influenced the mean fruit yield. The yield increase in pre-emergence application of herbicide, pre emergence application of herbicide followed by hand weeding (IWM), polythene mulching, and twice manual weeding on 25 and 45 DAT were 45.8%, 75.8, 140.6 and 66.5% over weedy check. Thus, the polythene mulching was better than other methods of weed control. The maximum fruit yield of 24.78 t ha-1 was recorded under polythene mulching. The integrated weed management (IWM) involving pre emergence application of herbicide followed by hand weeding resulted in higher tomato yield of 18.32 t ha-1 than pre emergence application of herbicide, manual weeding and weedy check. The non-chemical like black polythene mulching resulted the higher net income of Rs.88258 ha-1 with BC ratio of 3.48 than other weed control methods. Hence, black polythene mulching may be recommended for effective control of weeds besides improving the fruit yield of tomato. In the absence of black polythene mulch due to non-availability, the integrated weed management practice of pre emergence application of herbicides followed by hand weeding on 45 DAT found to be better than other weed control measures.

In order to check the efficiency of some of pre- and post- emergence herbicides for weed control in maize. Total 14 weed control treatments carried out during two season 2017 and 2018 Pre-emergence as :Metribuzin, Acetochlor, Atrazine, Acetochlor, Remusulfuron, Pendimethalinand and Post-emergence as: Foramsulfuron, Nicosulfuron, Flumetsulam, Clopyralid, Diuran, Nicosulfuron and hand hoeing twice and untreated (control) .The obtained results showed that the dominant species were as the annual summer weed were Setaria verticilata (15.09%), Corchorus olitorius (14.15%), Cenchrus ciliaris(9.43 %), Echinochloa colona (8.49 %) and the perennial species were Cynodon dactylon (11.32%) and Convolvulus arevensis (9.43%). For most maize yield components, the pre-emergence herbicides were superior to post-emergence herbicides during both seasons. The higher grain yield ardab/fed treatments were produced by using pre-emergence i.e. Acetochlor (24.7 and 25.4)., Atrazine (23.7 and 24.9), Metribuzin (22.2 and 23.3) and Pendimethalin (20.3 and 22.7) Acetochlor (17.8 and 22.8) and for, post-emergence were Nicosulfuron the highest (19.6 and 20.8) and hand hoeing twice at 3 and 6 week after sowing was (21.2 and 20.4) in both season respectively. The higher efficiency in controlling weeds compared to weedy check (control) treatment or other weed control treatments. Weed control treatment pre- and post- emergence herbicides and hoeing significantly improved grain yield in both season. It could be concluded that as pre-emergence herbicides Metribuzin, Acetochlor, Arazine, Acetochlor, Remusulfuron, Pendimethalin and Nicosulfuron as post-emergence under doses and environmental conditions and also hoeing twice improved grain yield and reduced number and fresh weight of weeds.

Goosegrass (Eleusine indica L. Gaertn.) is a problematic C4 weedy grass species, occurring in the warmer regions of the world where it is difficult to selectively control without injuring the turfgrass. Furthermore, control efficacy is affected by plant maturity. End-user options for satisfactory goosegrass control has decreased; thus, the need for developing management techniques to improve the selectivity of POST goosegrass control options in turfgrass systems is ever increasing. One possible means of providing control, yet maintaining turf quality is immediately incorporating applied products via irrigation. Greenhouse and field trials were conducted in Pickens County, SC, with the objectives of 1) evaluating turfgrass injury following use of POST goosegrass control options; 2) assessing if irrigating (0.6 cm) immediately following the herbicide application reduces injury of ‘Tifway 419’ bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt-Davy]; and 3) determining if immediate irrigation influences goosegrass control at one- to three-tiller and mature growth stage. Following the application of herbicide treatments, irrigation was applied (+) or not applied (−). Treatments included the following: control (+/− irrigation); topramezone at 12.3 g a.i./ha (+/− irrigation); metribuzin at 420 g a.i./ha (+/− irrigation); and topramezone plus metribuzin (+/− irrigation) at 12.3 and 420 g a.i./ha. Irrigation treatment had minimum effect on greenhouse-grown goosegrass biomass, all treatments provided >85% control of 1- to 3-tiller goosegrass plants. However, control for mature plants was

Living mulches can provide many sustainability benefits. However, living mulch–cash crop competition and unreliable weed control are major challenges in living mulch systems. In this study, we evaluated the potential of herbicides used at reduced rates in combination with living mulch to suppress weeds, while simultaneously reducing living mulch vigor. Herbicide treatments were a combination of two POST applications, each consisting of a single, different herbicide. Field trials were conducted in Freeville, NY, USA, using: fresh market field tomato as cash crop; sesbania and sunn hemp as living mulch; and the herbicides fomesafen, halosulfuron, metribuzin, and rimsulfuron. In 2015, when water was not limiting, tomato yield and living mulch biomass were positively correlated. This relationship was negative in 2016, likely because of drought during the growing season. Compared with the untreated living mulch check, using the herbicide treatments in combination with living mulch reduced tomato yield losses by up to 71% in 2015 and 51% in 2016. In these herbicide plus living mulch plots, weed biomass was reduced by up to 97%, compared with the weedy check. Living mulch in herbicide treatments generated up to 2500 kg ha–1 of dry matter during both 2015 and 2016, with an average ground cover of 63% in 2015 and 85% in 2016. A predominantly PRE herbicide with residual soil activity (metribuzin), followed by a herbicide with greater POST activity (halosulfuron/rimsulfuron) was the most effective herbicide application sequence. Weed control is one of the crucial factors to achieve higher yield of good quality forage maize. A field trial was conducted during summer 2013 to investigate the effect of bromoxynil+MCPA+metribuzin (Valent 470 EW pre mixed formulation) application at varied doses to control weeds in forage maize (Zea mays L.) at Agronomy Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Application of bromoxynil+MCPA+metribuzin @ 470, 528.75 and 587.50 g a.i/ha was made after emergence of weedsand crop. A check with no application and hand hoeing was included for comparison. The experiment was conducted with four replications under randomized complete block design. The data regarding the weed parameters, yield and yield components of maize were recorded. The results revealed that among the herbicide treatments minimum weed density (three weeks after sowing 35.75 m2 and at harvest 12.25/m2) and dry biomass (20.80 g/m2) was observed with the application of bromoxynil+MCPA+metribuzin @ 587.50 g a.i./ha. Same herbicidal treatment caused significant increase in plant height (248.75 cm), stem diameter (1.45 cm), fresh weight (467.25g) and forage yield (31.47%) of maize. Therefore, use ofbromoxynil+MCPA+metribuzin @ 587.50 g a.i./ha is the best option to manage broad leaved as well as grassy weeds in forage maize to get higher yield of forage .

Three plot field trials (2014–2017) were carried out in Prague. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of herbicides against volunteers from Clearfield® (CL) and conventional oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and to quantify the effect of herbicide and application time on wheat yield. Autumn control (diflufenican, isoproturon, flumioxazin, metribuzin, penoxsulam, florasulam, chlorsulfuron were tested) of volunteer oilseed rape (OSR) was more effective than using the spring herbicide treatments (2,4-D, iodosulfuron, amidosulfuron, tritosulfuron, florasulam), especially against the CL OSR variety. Full control of both CL and conventional OSR was recorded only on plots treated by the combination of metribuzin + diflufenican + flufenacet. The most effective spring herbicide was 2,4-D, but its efficacy (82–95%) depended on the growth stage of OSR and application rate. Efficacy of spring herbicides against CL OSR was lower compared to that against conventional OSR, but there were large differences among tested herbicides. Efficacy of tested ALS inhibitors against volunteer CL OSR ranged between 20% (chlorsulfuron) and 77% (tritosulfuron + florasulam). Seed production of volunteer OSR ranged between 0 and 37,000 seeds m−2 while depending strongly on time of sowing and weather conditions during the autumn and winter. No seed of CL OSR matured on plots treated by metribuzin in autumn or 2,4-D at application rate 377 g ha−1 in spring. Volunteer OSR in competition with winter wheat caused almost 50% wheat yield loss on the untreated check. Although the efficacy of most spring herbicide treatments on conventional OSR was good, the competition effect of OSR on wheat during winter and early spring caused about 0.52–0.86 t ha−1 greater yield loss compared to autumn herbicide treatments.

Herbicide-resistant weeds are a growing concern globally; in response, new herbicide resistance traits are being inserted into crops. Isoxaflutole-resistant soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] will provide a new mode of action for use in this crop. Ten experiments were conducted over a 2-yr period (2017, 2018) to determine herbicide interactions between isoxaflutole and metribuzin on soybean injury, weed control efficacy, and soybean yield on a range of soil types. Soybean leaf-bleaching injury caused by isoxaflutole was most severe at sites with higher levels of rainfall after application. Control of weed species with isoxaflutole (52.5, 79, and 105 g ai ha−1) and metribuzin (210, 315, and 420 g ai ha−1) differed by site based on amount of rainfall after application. At sites where there was sufficient rainfall for herbicide activation, isoxaflutole at all rates controlled common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), Amaranthus spp., common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.), and velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.) >90%; metribuzin at all rates controlled Amaranthus spp. and witchgrass (Panicum capillare L.) >80%. Control of every weed species evaluated was reduced when there was limited rainfall after herbicide application. The co-application of isoxaflutole + metribuzin resulted in additive or synergistic interactions for the control of C. album, Amaranthus spp., A. artemisiifolia, A. theophrasti, Setaria spp., barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv], and P. capillare. Isoxaflutole and metribuzin can be an effective management strategy for common annual broadleaf and grass weeds in Ontario if timely rainfall events occur after herbicide application.

Persistence of herbicides in soil is a major concerning world issue due to their negative impacts on environment and human health. Laboratory and bioassay experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of municipal waste compost (MC) and sheep manure (SM) on metribuzin degradation and phytotoxicity of this herbicide. In degradation studies, soil samples were mixed separately with amendments at a rate of 2.5% (w/w) and metribuzin at a concentration of 5 mg kg−1 soil was used for fortification of selected samples. A liquid extraction method was chosen and final extracts were analyzed by HPLC. In bioassay study, the phytotoxic effects of different concentrations of metribuzin (0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1 mg kg−1 soil) on oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) were evaluated. The results indicated 88.8% degradation of metribuzin in MC during 120-day period followed by SM recording 72.2%, compared to non-amended soil where 59.8% of metribuzin were removed. The half-life was 119.48 days in non-amended soil as compared to 87.72 and 103.43 days in MC and SM application, respectively. MC was the most efficient treatment to accelerate metribuzin dissipation from the soil. Bioassay results showed that metribuzin residues had a negative effect on root and shoot biomass of oilseed rape. However, the root parameter was more sensitive than the shoot. It could be concluded that application of organic amendments to agricultural soils is an eco-friendly strategy to improve soil conditions and non-target crop protection as well as the removal of herbicide residues from soil environment.

The use of nonpotable water for irrigation on various sport venues has led to an increased use of seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum) turf in Hawaii. An ongoing challenge many seashore paspalum turf managers struggle with is bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) infestations. Herbicide efficacy studies were conducted at the Hoakalei Country Club [‘SeaDwarf’ seashore paspalum (fairway cut)] and the Magoon Research Station [‘SeaStar’ seashore paspalum (grown in container)] on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Spray applications of the herbicides mesotrione, topramezone, metribuzin, and ethofumesate were evaluated alone and in tank mixtures for bermudagrass suppression and seashore paspalum injury. At the Hoakalei Country Club, maximum bermudagrass injury with minimal seashore paspalum discoloration was obtained with tank mixes of mesotrione (0.06 lb/acre) + metribuzin (0.19 lb/acre) + ethofumesate (1.00 lb/acre) and topramezone (0.02 lb/acre) + metribuzin (0.19 lb/acre) + ethofumesate (1.00 lb/acre). Unacceptable seashore paspalum turf injury was obtained in all treatments that did not include metribuzin. At the Magoon Research Station, maximum selective bermudagrass suppression was achieved with tank mixes of topramezone (0.01 lb/acre) + ethofumesate (1.00 lb/acre) and topramezone (0.01 lb/acre) + metribuzin (0.09 lb/acre) + ethofumesate (1.00 lb/acre). The addition of metribuzin and/or ethofumesate to the tank mix safened (reduced turf discoloration) seashore paspalum to topramezone or mesotrione foliar bleaching. Tank mixes of mesotrione, topramezone, metribuzin, and ethofumesate have the potential for bermudagrass suppression and control of other grassy weeds in seashore paspalum turf.

Background Black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides Huds.) is a frequent grass weed that commonly occurs in winter wheat in temperate Europe. Evolving resistance to post-emergence herbicides, e.g. acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors requires more complex weed management strategies and ensuring good efficacy of pre-emergence treatments becomes increasingly important. Flufenacet, in particular, has become a key herbicide for the control of multiple-resistant A. myosuroides. However, in some of those populations, reduced flufenacet efficacy was already observed. Results In a screening of black-grass populations from several European countries, most populations were controlled with the registered field rate of flufenacet. However, differences in the level of flufenacet sensitivity were observed and correlated with glutathione S-transferase-mediated enhanced flufenacet metabolism. The efficacy of the pre-emergence herbicides pendimethalin, prosulfocarb, S-metolachlor and pethoxamid, was also significantly decreased in populations with reduced flufenacet sensitivity. The use of flufenacet in mixtures with diflufenican, particularly in combination with flurtamone or metribuzin, however, significantly improved efficacy in less susceptible black-grass populations. Conclusions In several populations of different European origins, reduced efficacy of flufenacet was observed due to enhanced metabolism. Although differences between populations were relatively small, best weed management practices (e.g. application of full dose rates and herbicide mixtures and wide crop rotations) should be applied to reduce selection pressure and prevent flufenacet resistance from further evolving. This is particularly important as flufenacet is one of the few still-effective herbicides suitable for the control of multiple-resistant A. myosuroides genotypes in Europe, whereas alternative pre-emergence herbicides were less effective against multiple-resistant A. myosuroides populations. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Transgenic crops are being developed with herbicide resistance traits to expand innovative weed management solutions for crop producers. Soybean with traits that confer resistance to the hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase herbicide isoxaflutole is under development and will provide a novel herbicide mode of action for weed management in soybean. Ten field experiments were conducted over 2 years (2017 and 2018) on five soil textures with isoxaflutole-resistant soybean to evaluate annual weed control using one- and two-pass herbicide programs. The one-pass weed control programs included isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, applied PRE, at a low rate (52.5 + 210 g ai ha-1), medium rate (79 + 316 g ai ha-1), and high rate (105 + 420 g ai ha-1); and glyphosate applied early postemergence (EPOST) or late postemergence (LPOST). The two-pass weed control programs included isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, applied PRE, followed by glyphosate applied LPOST, and glyphosate applied EPOST followed by LPOST. At 4 weeks after the LPOST application, control of common lambsquarters, pigweed species, common ragweed, and velvetleaf was variable at 25% to 69%, 49% to 86%, and 71% to 95% at the low, medium, and high rates of isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, respectively. Isoxaflutole plus metribuzin at the low, medium, and high rates controlled grass species evaluated (i.e., barnyardgrass, foxtail, crabgrass, and witchgrass) 85% to 97%, 75% to 99%, and 86% to 100%, respectively. All two-pass weed management programs provided 98% to 100% control of all species. Weed control improved as the rate of isoxaflutole plus metribuzin increased. Dicamba-resistant (DR) kochia is an increasing concern for growers in the US Great Plains, including Kansas. Greenhouse and field experiments (Garden City and Tribune, KS, in the 2014 to 2015 growing season) were conducted to characterize the dicamba resistance levels in two recently evolved DR kochia accessions collected from fallow fields (wheat–sorghum–fallow rotation) near Hays, KS, and to determine the effectiveness of various PRE herbicide tank mixtures applied in fall or spring prior to the fallow year. Dicamba dose–response studies indicated that the KS-110 and KS-113 accessions had 5- to 8-fold resistance to dicamba, respectively, relative to a dicamba-susceptible (DS) accession. In separate field studies, atrazine-based PRE herbicide tank mixtures, dicamba + pendimethalin + sulfentrazone, and metribuzin + sulfentrazone when applied in the spring had excellent kochia control (85% to 95%) for 3 to 4 mo at the Garden City and Tribune sites. In contrast, kochia control with those PRE herbicide tank mixtures when applied in the fall did not exceed 79% at the later evaluation dates. In conclusion, the tested kochia accessions from western Kansas had evolved moderate to high levels of resistance to dicamba. Growers should utilize these effective PRE herbicide tank mixtures (multiple sites of action) in early spring to manage kochia seed bank during the summer fallow phase of this 3-yr crop rotation (wheat–corn/sorghum–fallow) in the Central Great Plains.

The development of a linuron-free weed management strategy for carrot production is essential as a result of the herbicide reevaluation programs launched by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency in Canada for herbicides registered before 1995 and the discovery of linuron-resistant pigweed species in Ontario. Field trials were conducted in one of Ontario’s main carrot-growing regions on high organic soils in 2016 and 2017. Pigweed species seedlings were effectively controlled with PRE treatments of prometryn, pendimethalin, S-metolachlor, or glufosinate. POST treatments of pyroxasulfone and metribuzin followed by predetermined biologically effective dose (≥90% control of pigweed seedlings) of acifluorfen, oxyfluorfen, fluthiacet-methyl, and fomesafen achieved excellent crop selectivity and commercially acceptable pigweed species seedling control under field conditions. Carfentrazone-ethyl or fomesafen applied PRE severely reduced seedling emergence and yield in the wet growing season of 2017. This study demonstrated clearly that an alternative linuron-free strategy can be developed for carrots. The strategy of exploring the potential to use the biologically effective dose of selected herbicides to achieve crop selectivity and control of pigweed species seedlings was verified.

Horseweed is a problematic weed to control, especially in no-tillage production. Increasing cases of herbicide resistance have exacerbated the problem, necessitating alternative control options and an integrated weed management approach. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate horseweed suppression from fall-planted cover crop monocultures and mixtures as well as two fall-applied residual herbicide treatments. Prior to cover crop termination, horseweed density was reduced by 88% to 96% from cover crops. At cover crop termination in late spring, cereal rye biomass was 7,671 kg ha-1, which was similar to cereal rye–containing mixtures (7,720 kg ha-1) but greater than legumes in monoculture (3,335 kg ha-1). After cover crops were terminated in late spring using a roller crimper, corn and soybeans were planted and horseweed was evaluated using density counts, visible ratings, and biomass collection until harvest. Forage radish winterkilled, offering no competition in late winter or biomass to contribute to horseweed suppression after termination. Excluding forage radish in monoculture, no difference in horseweed suppression was detected between cereal rye–containing cover crops and legumes (crimson clover and hairy vetch) in monoculture. Likewise, horseweed suppression was similar between monocultures and mixtures, with the exception of one site-year in which mixtures provided better suppression. In this experiment, the cover crop treatments performed as well as or better than the fall-applied residual herbicides, flumioxazin + paraquat and metribuzin + chlorimuron-ethyl. These results indicate that fall-planted cover crops are a viable option to suppress horseweed and can be an effective part of an integrated weed management program. Summer annual grassy weeds such as goosegrass (Eleusine indica L. Gaertn.) continue to be problematic to control selectively with postemergence (POST) herbicides within turfgrass stands. In recent years, reduced performance by certain herbicides (e.g., foramsulfuron), cancellation of goosegrass-specific herbicides (e.g., diclofop-methyl), and cancellation and/or severe use reductions of other herbicides [e.g., monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA)] have limited the options for satisfactory control and maintenance of an acceptable (≤30% visual turfgrass injury) turfgrass quality. Currently available herbicides (e.g., topramezone and metribuzin) with goosegrass activity typically injure warm-season turfgrass species. The objectives of this research were to evaluate both ‘Tifway 419’ bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. ×Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] injury after treatment with POST herbicides, and to determine whether irrigating immediately after application reduces turfgrass injury. Treatments were control (± irrigation); topramezone (Pylex 2.8C; ± irrigation); carfentrazone + 2,4-D + dicamba + 2-(2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy) propionic acid (MCPP) (Speedzone 2.2L; ± irrigation); carfentrazone + 2,4-D + dicamba + MCPP in combination with topramezone (± irrigation); metribuzin (Sencor 75DF; ± irrigation); mesotrione (Tenacity 4L; ± irrigation); simazine 4L (±irrigation); and mesotrione + simazine (± irrigation). Irrigated treatments were applied immediately with a hand hose precalibrated to apply 0.6 cm or 0.25 inch (≈6.3 L). Visual turfgrass injury for combined herbicide treatments for the irrigated plots was 6% 4 days after treatment (DAT), 12% 1 week after treatment (WAT), 17% 2 WAT, and 6% 4 WAT, whereas nonirrigated plots had turfgrass injury of 14% at 4 DAT, 31% 1 WAT, 35% 2 WAT, and 12% 4 WAT. Irrigated pots had normalized differences vegetative indices (NDVI) ratings of 0.769 at 4 DAT, 0.644 at 1 WAT, 0.612 at 2 WAT, and 0.621 at 4 WAT, whereas nonirrigated plots had the lowest (least green) turfgrass NDVI ratings of 0.734 at 4 DAT, 0.599 at 1 WAT, 0.528 at 2 WAT, and 0.596 at 4 WAT. These experiments suggest turfgrass injury could be alleviated by immediately incorporating herbicides through irrigation.

Solanum rostratum Dunal is an invasive weed species that invaded Israel in the 1950s. The weed appears in several germination flashes, from early spring until late summer. Recently, an increase in its distribution range was observed, alongside the identification of new populations in the northern part of Israel. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of herbicide application for the control of S. rostratum using two field populations originated from the Golan Heights and the Jezreel Valley. While minor differences in herbicide efficacy were recorded between populations, plant growth stage had a significant effect on herbicide response. Carfentrazone-ethyl was found to be highly effective in controlling plants at both early and late growth stages. Metribuzin, oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen and tembutrione showed reduced efficacy when applied at later growth stage (8–9 cm height), as compared to the application at an early growth stage (4–5 cm height). Tank mixes of oxadiazon and oxyfluorfen with different concentrations of surfactant improved later growth stage plant control. Taken together, our study highlights several herbicides that can improve weed control and may be used as chemical solutions alongside diversified crop rotation options. Thus, they may aid in preventing the spread and further buildup of S. rostratum field populations.
