Maintaining or even increasing crop yields while reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions is necessary to reconcile food security and climate change, while the metric of yield‐scaled N2O emission (i.e., N2O emissions per unit of crop yield) is at present poorly understood. Here we conducted a global meta‐analysis with more than 6000 observations to explore the variation patterns and controlling factors of yield‐scaled N2O emissions for maize, wheat and rice and associated potential mitigation options. Our results showed that the average yield‐scaled N2O emissions across all available data followed the order wheat (322 g N Mg−1, with the 95% confidence interval [CI]: 301–346) > maize (211 g N Mg−1, CI: 198–225) > rice (153 g N Mg−1, CI: 144–163). Yield‐scaled N2O emissions for individual crops were generally higher in tropical or subtropical zones than in temperate zones, and also showed a trend towards lower intensities from low to high latitudes. This global variation was better explained by climatic and edaphic factors than by N fertilizer management, while their combined effect predicted more than 70% of the variance. Furthermore, our analysis showed a significant decrease in yield‐scaled N2O emissions with increasing N use efficiency or in N2O emissions for production systems with cereal yields >10 Mg ha−1 (maize), 6.6 Mg ha−1 (wheat) or 6.8 Mg ha−1 (rice), respectively. This highlights that N use efficiency indicators can be used as valuable proxies for reconciling trade‐offs between crop production and N2O mitigation. For all three major staple crops, reducing N fertilization by up to 30%, optimizing the timing and placement of fertilizer application or using enhanced‐efficiency N fertilizers significantly reduced yield‐scaled N2O emissions at similar or even higher cereal yields. Our data‐driven assessment provides some key guidance for developing effective and targeted mitigation and adaptation strategies for the sustainable intensification of cereal production. The water footprint (WF), based on irrigation water quality, is important as a decision-making tool for crop selection based on the comparative advantage of water consumption and yield to maximize agricultural water productivity and sustainably improve water use efficiency. This paper presents a generic link between climate variability and water footprint. To support this link, a case study is presented for wheat and maize in different agro-climate zones in Egypt. In this study, the three agro-ecological zones, Nile Delta, Middle Egypt, and Upper Egypt, were selected to represent three different microclimates. The climate data were analyzed to estimate reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and calculate crop water use (CWU) for wheat and maize from 2015 through 2019. Cultivated area and yield data were analyzed during the study period. Water footprint (WF) was calculated for old land (clay soils) and new lands (sandy soils) in three climate regions based on blue and grey water. Green water was excluded due to negligible rainfall depths in Egypt. The results showed that the mean values of WF for maize were 1067, 1395, 1655 m3/ton in old land and 1395, 1634, 2232 m3/ton in new land under the three climate regions, respectively, while it was 923, 982, 1117 m3/ton in old land and 1180, 1258, 1452 m3/ton for wheat in new land for the three regions, respectively. The results show that the crop water use fluctuated over regions due to climate variability where the CWU values were 6211, 7335, 8007 m3/ha for maize and 4348, 4825, 5774 m3/ha for wheat in the three regions, respectively. The results show an 11% and 33% increase in maize and an 18% and 29% increase in wheat CWU in Middle and Upper Egypt regions comparing to what was observed in Nile Delta due to an increase in solar radiation, temperature, and wind speed. The Egypt mean value of wheat water footprint was 1152 m3/ton and mean value of maize water footprint was 1563 m3/ton. The data clearly show the effect of microclimate variability on WF and irrigation requirements between regions. The methodology and results from this study provide a pathway to help the policy makers to mitigate climate change impacts on crop yield and to enhance water resources management in major crop production regions by redistribution of the cropping patterns based on the comparative advantages of each crop within each region. The crop choices relative to the soil water retention characteristics could also contribute to the moderation of microclimate, which affects ETo and ETc and the water footprint. Salinity is one of the most significant constraints to crop production in dry parts of the world. This research emphasizes the beneficial effects of plant growth-promoting rhizo- bacterial isolates (PGPR) on the physiological responses of maize and wheat in a saline (NaCl) environment. Soil samples for the study were collected from a maize field in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, India. Isolated bacterial strains were screened for salt (NaCl) toler- ance and plant growth-promoting characters (i.e., indole acetic acid (IAA) production, siderophore production, amino cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activ- ity, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) production, and mineral phosphate solubilization). Screened bacterial isolates were further tested in pot experiments to examine their effects on wheat and maize growth. The treatments included five levels of bacterial inoculation (P0: control, P1: ACC deaminase positive + siderophore producer + NaCl tolerant bacteria, P2: mineral phosphate solubilizer + HCN producer + NaCl tolerant bacteria, P3: IAA producer + ACC deaminase positive + NaCl tolerant bacteria, P4: bacterial consortium, P5: Phosphomax commercial biofertilizer) and salt stress at 6 dS/m. Research findings found that exposure to a bacterial consortium led to the highest growth parameter in maize, including shoot length, root length, shoot and root dry weight followed by P2, P3, and P5 treatments at 6 dS/m salinity levels. However, P2 showed the best results for wheat at the same salinity levels, followed by P3, P4 and P5 treatments. P1 treatment did not show a significant result compared to control at 6dS/m salt level for both crops. The maximum proline content in maize and wheat was observed in P4 (23.28 μmol · g−1 ) and P2 (15.52 μmol · g−1 ) treatments, respectively, followed by P5 with Phosphomax biofertilizer. Maize is one of the most widely grown crops in the world and exceeds wheat and rice in production. Because of its openpollinated nature, there is tremendous genetic diversity in the maize genome. The main objective of this experiment was to assess the genetic diversity of 144 maize inbreds using Mahalanobis D2 analysis and molecular diversity among 10 selected inbreds through screening of RAPD markers. In the present investigation, 144 maize inbreds derived from four different base populations i.e., advanced generations of single-cross hybrids, three-way cross hybrids, hybrid mixtures and composites, were tested for genetic diversity using Mahalanobis D2 analysis based on 14 morphological characters. Ten selected parents were subjected to molecular diversity analysis through screening of RAPD markers. The grouping of inbreds into 10 clusters revealed that the inbreds derived from composites were more divergent followed by hybrid mixture base population. The clustering pattern observed in RAPD analysis was similar to the pattern in morphological diversity observed through Mahalanobis D2 analysis and it also confirmed the diverse nature of the composite and the hybrid mixture base population. The results of the present study showed that composites, followed by the hybrid mixture are the best base populations for deriving genetically diverse inbreds in maize. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The challenge to increase agricultural production with a minimum environmental impact requires to reach the maximum efficiency in the capture and use of resources such as photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), water, and nitrogen (N). Such requisites are encompassed in the ecological intensification (EI) concept. The aims of this work were to evaluate at a crop sequence level: i) crops yields, ii) water and radiation productivity and its components, i.e. resource capture and resource use efficiency, and iii) partial factor productivity of applied N (PFPN), partial nutrient balance for N (PNB), N uptake and N utilization efficiency of a two-year, three-crop sequence (wheat [ Triticum aestivum L.]/soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] double crop – maize [ Zea mays L.]) carried-out under EI principles in comparison with the same crop sequence under current farmer practices (FP) in two contrasting locations of the Argentinean Pampas, i.e. Paraná (-31°50′; -60°31′) at the northern Pampas and Balcarce (-37°45′, -58°18′) at the southern Pampas. Experiments were carried-out during four consecutive years, covering two complete cycles of the crop sequence. For the accumulated grain production of the crop sequence, EI management outyielded FP from 13 to 42%, depending on environmental conditions. Maize yield accounted for most of the variation (41–64%) of the accumulated grain yield of crop sequence, whether in EI as in FP. Average grain yield differences between EI and FP treatments were 274 g m−2 for maize, 69 g m−2 for wheat and -2 g m−2 for soybean. Water and radiation productivities of the sequence were higher in EI than in FP (26% for water and 17% for radiation; P < 0.0001), mainly because of increases in resource use efficiencies. EI reduced partial factor productivity of applied N, but improved partial nutrient balance for N as compared with FP. These reductions in partial factor productivity of applied N were less than proportional than the increases in N rate. Moreover, in spite of the higher N rate in EI respect to FP, N utilization efficiency (N ut E), i.e. grain per unit N uptake, was higher across all situations in EI. Our results showed that the challenge to obtain high grain yields by increasing N rate in a medium-input system could be achieved even with an increase in N ut E. Grain yields improvements, and increases in radiation and water productivity were reached by applying a set of agronomic practices that included improved genetics, crop and fertilizer N management englobed under EI concept. Development of semi-dwarf wheat (Triticum aestivum) and rice (Oryza sativa) led to increased yields and agronomic efficiencies with less lodging. While these short-stature cereals have become common in global crop production, commercial maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids remain tall. There is no information currently available on plant N uptake or yield responses to N timing for short stature maize hybrids. We tested three hypotheses on short-stature and tall maize hybrids 1) short-stature maize hybrids would have similar yield response to in-season N application compared to tall hybrids, 2) short-stature maize hybrids would have similar dry matter and N uptake patterns to tall hybrids, and 3) there would be significant partitioning differences between short-stature and tall hybrids in dry matter and N within the plants at multiple growth stages. In ten side-by-side field trials across eight site-years in the Midwestern USA, we tested the yield response and underlying nitrogen physiology of short-stature maize hybrids and tall comparators to split-rate N application. We show that split-rate application of 50% of the total N at mid-vegetative stages (V6) averaged 0.24 t ha−1 more grain yield across 10 field trials (positive yield response in 6 out of 10 trials) compared to a single 100% up-front N application, with the same pattern for short-stature and tall hybrids. In both hybrid statures, V6 N applications showed more frequent improvement in grain yield than V12 N applications. Total N uptake at maturity was not different between short-stature hybrids and their tall counterparts (p = 0.62). N partitioning differed between short-stature and tall hybrids; leaves in short-stature hybrids had 5% higher N concentration and 13% more N content in early vegetative development, stalks had 18–27% less dry matter and 5–25% less N content, depending on growth stage, while R1 ears averaged 18% more dry matter and N accumulation (p < 0.10 in all cases). At maturity short-stature hybrids had 4% higher harvest index and 3% higher N harvest index (p < 0.10). Based on these results, we expect that N management recommendations in short-stature maize hybrids would be similar to their tall counterparts, but that short stature mitigates logistical risk by providing more flexibility for in-season N applications. Yield-scaled nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission (YSNE) has been recognized as a means for developing appropriate nitrogen (N) management strategies to balance food security and mitigating N 2 O emissions. To better understand and use the concept of YSNE, it is essential to be assessed under various field conditions. The main objectives of this study were to assess the relationship between N inputs and YSNE with published results and identify response patterns of YSNE to N inputs. We assessed the relationship between N inputs and YSNE using published results encompassing 1800 observations (published from 1980 to 2020) from maize, rice, and wheat crops worldwide. Background yield-scaled N 2 O emission (BYSNE; a YSNE in the condition of zero N input) was significantly different by crop type. Rice (90.8 ± 12.9 g N 2 O−N Mg−1) had lower BYSNE compared to maize (174.2 ± 30.1 g N 2 O−N Mg−1) and wheat (325.4 ± 41.8 g N 2 O−N Mg−1). BYSNE was positively correlated with annual mean temperature in maize, rice, and wheat fields. BYSNE was negatively correlated with soil total nitrogen contents in rice fields. Over 60% data set showed a positive relationship between N inputs and YSNE in all three crops studied. A small proportion of the dataset had an optimum N rate that minimized YSNE. The results suggest that in general, lower N input rates result in lower YSNE in crop production. YSNE can be reduced in three ways: increasing yields (Type 1), reducing N 2 O emissions (Type 2), and both increasing yields and reducing N 2 O emissions (Type 3). To identify appropriate measures, we suggest a N 2 O emission-yield curve combining responses of yields and N 2 O emissions to N inputs. In type 1, 2, and 3 measures, an N 2 O emission-yield curve is shifted to the right, down, and both right and down, respectively. Through identifying direction and magnitude of the shifting, the effects of applied measures on yields and N 2 O emission in N input levels can be easily compared and recognized. This study provided insights into the nature of YSNE and how YSNE responds to N inputs. It also suggested an N 2 O emission-yield curve, which can be useful to identify how certain measures affect both N 2 O emissions and crop yields. The intensification of agriculture has increased production at the cost of environment and biodiversity worldwide. To increase crop yield in dry cereal systems, vast farmland areas of high conservation value are being converted into irrigation, especially in Mediterranean countries. We analyze the effect of irrigation-driven changes on the farm biota by comparing species diversity, community composition, and species traits of arable plants within crop fields from two contrasting farming systems (dry and irrigated) in Spain. We sampled plant species within 80 fields of dry wheat, irrigated wheat, and maize (only cultivated under irrigation). Wheat crops held higher landscape and per field species richness, and beta diversity than maize. Within the same type of crop, irrigated wheat hosted lower plant diversity than dry wheat at both field and landscape scales. Floristic composition differed between crop types, with higher frequencies of perennials, cosmopolitan, exotic, wind-pollinated and C species in maize. Our results suggest that irrigation projects, that transform large areas of dry cereal agro-ecosystems into irrigated crop systems dominated by maize, erode plant diversity. An adequate planning on the type and proportion of crops used in the irrigated agro-ecosystems is needed in order to balance agriculture production and biodiversity conservation. Filed experiments were conducted during 2004-2006 in maize (Zea mays L.) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cropping sequence to study the effect of application of P fertilizer along with P solubilizing microorganisms on yield, P response and nutrient availability in an alkaline soil Typic Haplustept. The results revealed that the grain yield significantly increased with the application of fertilizer. Highest grain yield was recorded with the inoculation of VAM in combination with SPP @ 30 kg P2O5 ha-1 in maize and PSB along with RP @30 kg P2O5 ha-1in wheat crop. Higher yield response was found to be (141.3%) in maize and (127.5% ) wheat with the application of 30 kg P2O5 ha-1 + VAM, whereas P use efficiency was highest with the inoculation of VAM along with 30 kg P2O5ha-1 in maize (32.7 kg grain kg-1P2O5) and wheat (34.3 kg grain kg-1P2O5). A significant improvement in organic carbon and available N and P was also observed with the combined use of SSP and VAM or rock phosphate and P solubilizing microorganisms. The results indicated that inoculation of biofertilizers in combination with limited doses of rock phosphate or SSP produced higher and sustainable crop yields, maintained the soil health and reduced the P fertilizer cost. Seed placement uniformity and failure to establish a uniform plant stand are critical problems associated with no-tillage production of maize (Zea mays L.) following wheat (Triticum aestivum). The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of different downforces (680, 880, 1150 and 1400 N) on performance of disc furrow openers and determine the optimum downforce for modified precision seeder equipped with single or double disc-type openers. The study was conducted in two different field conditions (field I and field II). The soil of field I and II were clay-loam and loamy, respectively. Seed spacing uniformity, sowing depth uniformity, mean emergence time and percentage of emergence were determined. Sowing depth and seed spacing uniformity, mean emergence time and percentage of emergence of both furrow openers were increased as a result of increasing downforce for both fields. The downforce of modified conventional precision seeder should be greater than 880 N for more precise no-till sowing using with single and double disc furrow openers for clay-loam and loamy soils. The North China Plain (NCP) is the most important agricultural production area in China. Crop production in the NCP is sensitive to changes in both climate and management practices. While previous studies showed a negative impact of climatic change on crop yield since 1980s, the confounding effects of climatic and agronomic factors have not been separately investigated. This paper used 25 years of crop data from three locations (Nanyang, Zhengzhou and Luancheng) across the NCP, together with daily weather data and crop modeling, to analyse the contribution of changes in climatic and agronomic factors to changes in grain yields of wheat and maize. The results showed that the changes in climate were not uniform across the NCP and during different crop growth stages. Warming mainly occurred during the vegetative (preflowering) growth stage of wheat and maize, while there was a cooling trend or no significant change in temperatures during the postflowering stage of wheat (spring) or maize (autumn). If varietal effects were excluded, warming during vegetative stages would lead to a reduction in the length of the growing period for both crops, generally leading to a negative impact on crop production. However, autonomous adoption of new crop varieties in the NCP was able to compensate the negative impact of climatic change. For both wheat and maize, the varietal changes helped stabilize the length of preflowering period against the shortening effect of warming and, together with the slightly reduced temperature in the postflowering period, extend the length of the grain-filling period. The combined effect led to increased wheat yield at Zhengzhou and Luancheng; increased maize yield at Nanyang and Luancheng; stabilized wheat yield at Nanyang, and a slight reduction in maize yield at Zhengzhou, compared with the yield change caused entirely by climatic change. The expected increase in population and the pressure posed by climate change on agricultural production require the assessment of future yield levels and the evaluation of the most suitable management options to minimize climate risk and promote sustainable agricultural production. Crop simulation models are widely applied tools to predict crop development and production under different management practices and environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to parameterize CSM-CERES-Wheat and CSM-CERES-Maize models, implemented in the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) software, to predict phenology and grain yield of durum wheat, common wheat, and maize in different Italian environments. A 10-year (2001–2010) dataset was used to optimize the genetic parameters for selected varieties of each species and to evaluate the models considering several statistical indexes. The generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation method, and trial and error approach were used to optimize the cultivar-specific parameters of these models. Results show good model performances in reproducing crop phenology and yield for the analyzed crops, especially with the parameters optimized with the trial and error procedure. Highly significant (p ≤ 0.001) correlations between observed and simulated data were found for both anthesis and yield in model calibration and evaluation (p ≤ 0.01 for grain yield of maize in model evaluation). Root mean square error (RMSE) values range from six to nine days for anthesis and from 1.1 to 1.7 t ha−1 for crop yield and index of agreement (d-index) from 0.96 to 0.98 for anthesis and from 0.8 to 0.87 for crop yield. The set of genetic parameters obtained for durum wheat, common wheat, and maize may be applied in further analyses at field, regional, and national scales to guide operational (farmers), strategic, and tactical (policy makers) decisions.
