Se evaluó la incidencia de los principales insectos fitófagos y benéficos presentes en las variedades de frijol Bat -- 304 y Cuba Cueto 25 -- 9 (negro) en unicultivo y asociadas con maíz variedad Criollo, en áreas agrícolas del Centro Nacional de Sanidad Agropecuaria, ubicado en el municipio San José de Las Lajas, durante los meses de enero a marzo de 2001. Los tratamientos se conformaron por las variedades de frijol, sembradas en unicultivo y asociadas con maíz. Las evaluaciones se realizaron semanalmente, las cuales comenzaron a partir de los 15 días posteriores a la germinación del frijol. Los insectos fitófagos y benéficos fueron cuantificados e identificados en el laboratorio de Entomología del Grupo de Plagas Agrícolas del CENSA. Dentro de los primeros se halló a Empoasca kraemeri Ross y Moore, Bemisia spp. y un complejo de tisanópteros. Las poblaciones de los mismos fueron superiores en el unicultivo, con relación a la asociación con maíz, donde los insectos benéficos encontrados: Chrysoperla spp., Orius insidiosus Say, Cycloneda limbifer Casey, Coleomegilla cubensis Casey y Franklinothrips vespiformis Crawford) tuvieron una mayor incidencia, mientras que las poblaciones de Zelus longipes (L.) fueron extremadamente escasas, no mostrando diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos. Las poblaciones del complejo de tisanópteros mostraron preferencia por la variedad Cuba Cueto 25 -- 9 (negro) y sus poblaciones fueron significativamente superiores, con relación a la variedad Bat -- 304.
