Context. Abundances of slow neutron-capture process (s-process) elements in stars with exquisite asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and astrometric constraints offer a novel opportunity to study stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, and Galactic chemical evolution. Aims. We investigate one of the least studied s-process elements in the literature, cerium (Ce), using stars with asteroseismic constraints from the Kepler, K2, and TESS missions. Methods. We combined the global asteroseismic parameters derived from precise light curves obtained by the Kepler, K2, and TESS missions with stellar parameters and chemical abundances from the latest data release of the large spectroscopic survey APOGEE and astrometric data from the Gaia mission. Finally, we computed stellar ages using the code PARAM with a Bayesian estimation method. Results. We investigated the different trends of [Ce/Fe] as a function of metallicity, [α/Fe], and age taking into account the dependence on the radial position, especially in the case of K2 targets, which cover a wide galactocentric range. We finally explored the [Ce/α] ratios as a function of age in different galactocentric intervals. Conclusions The studied trends display a strong dependence of the Ce abundances on the metallicity and star formation history. The [Ce/Fe] ratio shows a non-monotonic dependence on [Fe/H] with a peak around −0.2 dex. Moreover, younger stars have higher [Ce/Fe] and [Ce/α] ratios than older stars, confirming the latest contribution of low- and intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars to the Galactic chemical enrichment. In addition, the trends of [Ce/Fe] and [Ce/α] with age become steeper moving towards the outer regions of the Galactic disc, demonstrating more intense star formation in the inner regions than in the outer regions. Cerium is thus a potentially interesting element to help constrain stellar yields and the inside-out formation of the Milky Way disc. Context. With its origin coming from several sources (Big Bang, stars, cosmic rays) and given its strong depletion during its stellar lifetime, the lithium element is of great interest as its chemical evolution in the Milky Way is not well understood at present. To help constrain stellar and galactic chemical evolution models, numerous and precise lithium abundances are necessary for a large range of evolutionary stages, metallicities, and Galactic volume. Aims. In the age of stellar parametrization on industrial scales, spectroscopic surveys such as APOGEE, GALAH, RAVE, and LAMOST have used data-driven methods to rapidly and precisely infer stellar labels (atmospheric parameters and abundances). To prepare the ground for future spectroscopic surveys such as 4MOST and WEAVE, we aim to apply machine learning techniques to lithium measurements and analyses. Methods. We trained a convolution neural network (CNN), coupling Gaia-ESO Survey iDR6 stellar labels (Teff, log(g), [Fe/H], and A(Li)) and GIRAFFE HR15N spectra, to infer the atmospheric parameters and lithium abundances for ∼40 000 stars. The CNN architecture and accompanying notebooks are available online via GitHub. Results. We show that the CNN properly learns the physics of the stellar labels, from relevant spectral features through a broad range of evolutionary stages and stellar parameters. The lithium feature at 6707.8 Å is successfully singled out by our CNN, among the thousands of lines in the GIRAFFE HR15N setup. Rare objects such as lithium-rich giants are found in our sample. This level of performance is achieved thanks to a meticulously built, high-quality, and homogeneous training sample. Conclusions. The CNN approach is very well adapted for the next generations of spectroscopic surveys aimed at studying (among other elements) lithium, such as the 4MIDABLE-LR/HR (4MOST Milky Way disk and bulge low- and high-resolution) surveys. In this context, the caveats of machine-learning applications should be appropriately investigated, along with the realistic label uncertainties and upper limits for abundances. The Milky Way provides an ideal laboratory to test our understanding of galaxy evolution, owing to our ability to observe our Galaxy over fine scales. However, connecting the Galaxy to the wider galaxy population remains difficult, due to the challenges posed by our internal perspective and to the different observational techniques employed. Here, we present a sample of galaxies identified as Milky Way analogues on the basis of their stellar masses and bulge-to-total ratios, observed as part of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey. We analyse the galaxies in terms of their stellar kinematics and populations as well as their ionized gas contents. We find our sample to contain generally young stellar populations in their outskirts. However, we find a wide range of stellar ages in their central regions, and we detect central active galactic nucleus-like or composite-like activity in roughly half of the sample galaxies, with the other half consisting of galaxies with central star-forming emission or emission consistent with old stars. We measure gradients in gas metallicity and stellar metallicity that are generally flatter in physical units than those measured for the Milky Way; however, we find far better agreement with the Milky Way when scaling gradients by galaxies' disc scale lengths. From this, we argue much of the discrepancy in metallicity gradients to be due to the relative compactness of the Milky Way, with differences in observing perspective also likely to be a factor. Simpson's paradox, or Yule–Simpson effect, arises when a trend appears in different subsets of data but disappears or reverses when these subsets are combined. We describe here seven cases of this phenomenon for chemo-kinematical relations believed to constrain the Milky Way disc formation and evolution. We show that interpreting trends in relations, such as the radial and vertical chemical abundance gradients, the age–metallicity relation, and the metallicity–rotational velocity relation (MVR), can lead to conflicting conclusions about the Galaxy past if analyses marginalize over stellar age and/or birth radius. It is demonstrated that the MVR in RAVE giants is consistent with being always strongly negative, when narrow bins of [Mg/Fe] are considered. This is directly related to the negative radial metallicity gradients of stars grouped by common age (mono-age populations) due to the inside-out disc formation. The effect of the asymmetric drift can then give rise to a positive MVR trend in high-[α/Fe] stars, with a slope dependent on a given survey's selection function and observational uncertainties. We also study the variation of lithium abundance, A(Li), with [Fe/H] of AMBRE:HARPS dwarfs. A strong reversal in the positive A(Li)–[Fe/H] trend of the total sample is found for mono-age populations, flattening for younger groups of stars. Dissecting by birth radius shows strengthening in the positive A(Li)–[Fe/H] trend, shifting to higher [Fe/H] with decreasing birth radius; these observational results suggest new constraints on chemical evolution models. Context. Very metal-poor halo stars are the best candidates for being among the oldest objects in our Galaxy. Samples of halo stars with age determination and detailed chemical composition measurements provide key information for constraining the nature of the first stellar generations and the nucleosynthesis in the metal-poor regime. Aims. Age estimates are very uncertain and are available for only a small number of metal-poor stars. We present the first results of a pilot programme aimed at deriving precise masses, ages, and chemical abundances for metal-poor halo giants using asteroseismology and high-resolution spectroscopy. Methods. We obtained high-resolution UVES spectra for four metal-poor RAVE stars observed by the K2 satellite. Seismic data obtained from K2 light curves helped improve spectroscopic temperatures, metallicities, and individual chemical abundances. Mass and ages were derived using the code PARAM, investigating the effects of different assumptions (e.g. mass loss and [α/Fe]-enhancement). Orbits were computed using Gaia DR2 data. Results. The stars are found to be normal metal-poor halo stars (i.e. non C-enhanced), and an abundance pattern typical of old stars (i.e. α and Eu-enhanced), and have masses in the 0.80−1.0 M⊙ range. The inferred model-dependent stellar ages are found to range from 7.4 Gyr to 13.0 Gyr with uncertainties of ∼30%−35%. We also provide revised masses and ages for metal-poor stars with Kepler seismic data from the APOGEE survey and a set of M4 stars. Conclusions. The present work shows that the combination of asteroseismology and high-resolution spectroscopy provides precise ages in the metal-poor regime. Most of the stars analysed in the present work (covering the metallicity range of [Fe/H] ∼ −0.8 to −2 dex) are very old >9 Gyr (14 out of 19 stars), and all of the stars are older than >5 Gyr (within the 68 percentile confidence level). Understanding the formation and evolution of our Galaxy requires accurate distances, ages, and chemistry for large populations of field stars. Here, we present several updates to our spectrophotometric distance code, which can now also be used to estimate ages, masses, and extinctions for individual stars. Given a set of measured spectrophotometric parameters, we calculate the posterior probability distribution over a given grid of stellar evolutionary models, using flexible Galactic stellar-population priors. The code (called StarHorse) can accommodate different observational data sets, prior options, partially missing data, and the inclusion of parallax information into the estimated probabilities. We validate the code using a variety of simulated stars as well as real stars with parameters determined from asteroseismology, eclipsing binaries, and isochrone fits to star clusters. Our main goal in this validation process is to test the applicability of the code to field stars with known Gaia-like parallaxes. The typical internal precisions (obtained from realistic simulations of an APOGEE+Gaia-like sample) are ≃8 per cent in distance, ≃20 per cent in age, ≃6 per cent in mass, and ≃0.04 mag in AV. The median external precision (derived from comparisons with earlier work for real stars) varies with the sample used, but lies in the range of ≃[0, 2] per cent for distances, ≃[12, 31] per cent for ages, ≃[4, 12] per cent for masses, and ≃ 0.07 mag for AV. Galactic Archaeology has recently been challenged by the fact that stars observed now in a certain location are not necessarily born there, but could have been kicked out from their birth places by different internal and/or external processes. We have made one of the first attempts to quantify how important stellar mixing could be in the case of our Galaxy, and how much of the original chemodynamical correlations would have been destroyed by such processes. Our unique approach has allowed us to conclude that although stellar mixing does take place in our Galaxy, many of the main relations between chemistry and age suggested by pure chemical evolution models are still generally valid. However, stringent constraints can be obtained only when stellar ages will be known for a large number of field stars. This is certainly one of the goals of Gaia, but in the meantime it has been shown that Asteroseismology can also provide a way to estimate ages of giants, even at large distances from the Sun. Here we present the first results obtained with a sample of CoRoT stars that have APOGEE spectra, in the framework of the CoRoGEE collaboration. The results coming from this still very recent approach (he. asteroseismology of Galactic populations) reveals that we might be on the right track in terms of quantifying radial mixing, but these results also suggest the chemical enrichment of the Galactic disk(s) to have been more complex than previously envisaged. Intriguingly, we find that the use of [a/Fe]-ratios as proxy for age, although generally valid, breaks down for some stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our understanding of how the Galaxy was formed and evolves is severely hampered by the lack of precise constraints on basic stellar properties such as distances, masses and ages. Here, we show that solar-like pulsating red giants represent a well-populated class of accurate distance indicators, spanning a large age range, which can be used to map and date the Galactic disc in the regions probed by observations made by the CoRoT1 and Kepler space telescopes. When combined with photometric constraints, the pulsation spectra of such evolved stars not only reveal their radii, and hence distances, but also provide well-constrained estimates of their masses, which are reliable proxies for the ages of the stars. As a first application, we consider red giants observed by CoRoT in two different parts of the Milky Way, and determine precise distances for ∼2000 stars spread across nearly 15 000 pc of the Galactic disc, exploring regions which are a long way from the solar neighbourhood. We find significant differences in the mass distributions of these two samples which, by comparison with predictions of synthetic models of the Milky Way, we interpret as mainly due to the vertical gradient in the distribution of stellar masses (hence ages) in the disc. In the future, the availability of spectroscopic constraints for this sample of stars will not only improve the age determination, but also provide crucial constraints on age–velocity and age–metallicity relations at different Galactocentric radii and heights from the plane.
