New Algerian wintering areas not previously known to be important for the short-eared owls Asio flammeus (Pontoppidan, 1763) Algeria has seven resident owl species, including the Pharaoh eagle-owl ( I Bubo ascalaphus i ), the long-eared owl ( I Asio otus i ), the Eurasian scops owl ( I Otus scops i ), the tawny owl ( I Strix aluco i ), the western barn owl ( I Tyto alba i ), the little owl ( I Athene noctua i ) and the short-eared owl ( I Asio flammeus i ) (Ochando, 1986). Short-eared owls are not considered threatened according the IUCN criteria, but with their limited geographic distribution in Algeria, the species is listed as "protected" (JORDAP, 2012). Data collection We searched the wintering areas of short-eared owls throughout Algeria focusing particularly on the zones where the species was observed previously. [Extracted from the article]
