The performance of a Mini-Inverted Soot Generator (MISG) has been investigated at ChAMBRe (Chamber for Aerosol Modelling and Bio-aerosol Research) by studying the properties of soot particles generated by ethylene and propane combustion. Starting from an extensive classification of combustion conditions and resulting flame shapes, the MISG exhaust was characterized in terms of concentration of emitted particles and gases, particle size distribution and optical properties. Soot particles were also collected on quartz fibre filters and then analysed by optical and thermal-optical techniques, to measure the spectral dependence of the absorption coefficient b_abs, and their composition in terms of Elemental and Organic Carbon (EC and OC). Significant differences could be observed when the MISG is fuelled with ethylene and propane both in terms of particle size and optical behaviour (i.e., absorption coefficient). Values of the Mass Absorption Coefficient (MAC) and of the Angstrom Absorption Exponent (AAE) turned out to be compatible with the literature, even if with some specific difference. The comprehensive characterization of the MISG soot particles is an important piece of information to design and perform experiments in atmospheric simulation chambers.

Thermal–optical analysis is widely adopted for the quantitative determination of total (TC), organic (OC), and elemental (EC) carbon in atmospheric aerosol sampled by suitable filters. Nevertheless, the methodology suffers from several uncertainties and artifacts such as the well-known issue of charring affecting the OC–EC separation. In the standard approach, the effect of the possible presence of brown carbon, BrC, in the sample is neglected. BrC is a fraction of OC, usually produced by biomass burning with a thermic behavior intermediate between OC and EC. BrC is optically active: it shows an increasing absorbance when the wavelength moves to the blue–UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Definitively, the thermal–optical characterization of carbonaceous aerosol should be reconsidered to address the possible BrC content in the sample under analysis. We introduce here a modified Sunset Lab Inc. EC–OC analyzer. Starting from a standard commercial instrument, the unit has been modified at the physics department of the University of Genoa (Italy), making possible the alternative use of the standard laser diode at λ=635 nm and of a new laser diode at λ=405 nm. In this way, the optical transmittance through the sample can be monitored at both wavelengths. Since at shorter wavelengths the BrC absorbance is higher, a better sensitivity to this species is gained. The modified instrument also gives the possibility to quantify the BrC concentration in the sample at both wavelengths. The new unit has been thoroughly tested, with both artificial and real-world aerosol samples: the first experiment, in conjunction with the multi-wavelength absorbance analyzer (MWAA; Massabò et al., 2013, 2015), resulted in the first direct determination of the BrC mass absorption coefficient (MAC) at λ=405 nm: MAC =23±1 m2 g−1.

In this study, the applicability of a benchtop polar photometer (PP_UniMI) to retrieve multi-wavelength aerosol absorption coefficient data by off-line measurements of the Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP) sample spots is presented. MAAP is a widespread single wavelength online instrument providing the aerosol absorption coefficient and the equivalent black carbon concentration. In this work, MAAP samples collected during four different campaigns were analysed off-line with PP_UniMI. First of all, data from PP_UniMI and MAAP were compared to investigate contributions to measurement uncertainties. In particular, the role of the following assumptions performed in the MAAP was investigated: 1) reconstructing angular distribution of light scattered by filter samples from measurements at three fixed angles using analytical functions; 2) setting the fraction of the back-scattered radiation by the blank filter (BM) at a fixed value BM = 0.7; 3) assuming a fixed value for the asymmetry factor g = 0.75. Samples collected at several sites showed an agreement within 5% when data from the two instruments were retrieved using the same approximations (i.e. backscattered radiation from the filter matrix BM set at a fixed value, phase functions reconstructed by analytical functions from measurements at 3 angles, same asymmetry factor) in the data retrieval algorithm. Conversely, larger differences (14% on average) between off-line measurements and averaged MAAP data were obtained when the high-angular resolved information available by PP_UniMI was exploited. By analysing the role of MAAP assumptions for σap retrieval, it resulted that fixing BM = 0.7 was the main responsible for the detected differences. Indeed, high-angular resolved off-line measurements by PP_UniMI allow to directly measure BM, obtaining BM = 0.88 on white spots. It is noteworthy that the observed results were similar at all investigated sites, so they proved to be independent of the aerosol type and can likely be attributed to instrumental effects. Moreover, a sensitivity test was carried out also to check the impact of the fixed value used for the asymmetry factor (set at g = 0.75 in both instruments). Varying g values within the typical range for ambient aerosol (0.50–0.75) the estimate of aerosol absorbance ABS (directly obtained from PP_UniMI measurements and linked to σap) was affected by 8% at most, thus being a minor source of uncertainty in the calculation. The effect of the variability in blank spots used for off-line analyses was also evaluated and resulted in a contribution smaller than 3% to the uncertainty of the methodology employed. Finally, the possibility of exploiting multi-wavelength assessment of absorption coefficients is an added value of PP_UniMI; indeed, it allows to estimate the contribution of different aerosol sources and components to the absorption coefficient using MAAP tapes used in present or past campaigns., The authors acknowledge the Italian Ministry of Research and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics for having supported this research in the PRIN2007-project and the INFN-TRACCIA experiment, respectively. International audience; The coastal aerosol represents a complex mixing between sea spray aerosols locally generated at the sea surface and a component generated by natural and/or anthropogenic sources on the nearby land. The aim of this paper is to study the atmospheric concentrations of carbonaceous compounds as measured in the coastal zone of the Northern Adriatic Sea between April 2017 and April 2018. The results show a quite large contribution of carbonaceous compounds, even when the sampled air mass is predominantly maritime. Although it is generally assumed that 70% and 90% of bulk organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations, respectively, are found in the fine mode, we observed higher OC and EC concentrations in the coarse fraction (up to about 37% and 25%, respectively). This confirms the occurrence of mixing between anthropogenic matter and sea spray, mainly composed of coarse aerosol particles, during the atmospheric transport over the Mediterranean basin.

Receptor modelling techniques are widely used in order to identify the main natural and anthropogenic processes driving aerosol levels at a receptor. In this work, Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was used to apportion PM2.5 levels at a traffic site (Msida) located in a coastal town. 180 filters collected throughout a yearly sampling campaign conducted in 2016, were chemically characterized by light absorbance analysis, x-ray fluorescence and ion chromatography in order to determine the concentrations of black carbon, 17 elements and 5 ions, respectively. The resulting chemical data base was used in conjunction with PMF in order to identify the 7 components affecting the PM2.5 levels at the receptor site. Six of these sources are considered to be typical of the atmospheric composition of coastal traffic sites: traffic (27.3%), ammonium sulfate (23.6%), Saharan dust (15%), aged sea salt (12.7%), shipping (5%) and fresh sea salt (4.6%). This is the first time that such a study was carried out in Malta and helps in understanding the aerosol pollution climate of the Central Mediterranean, which is still relatively understudied when compared to the Eastern and Western Mediterranean. Furthermore, we have isolated a factor exclusive to Malta: the fireworks component, which is responsible for 2.9% of the PM2.5 and which has health implications due to its chemical composition. The results of this work should also serve to guide the policy makers in achieving the necessary emission reductions in order to achieve the WHO guideline for PM2.5 by 2020.

Accurate and temporally consistent measurements of light absorbing aerosol (LAA) heating rate (HR) and of its source apportionment (fossil-fuel, FF; biomass-burning, BB) and speciation (black and brown Carbon; BC, BrC) are needed to evaluate LAA short-term climate forcing. For this purpose, wavelength- and time-dependent accurate LAA absorption coefficients are required. HR was experimentally determined and apportioned (sources/species) in the EMEP/ACTRIS/COLOSSAL-2018 winter campaign in Milan (urban-background site). Two Aethalometers (AE31/AE33) were installed together with a MAAP, CPC, OPC, a low volume sampler (PM2.5) and radiation instruments. AE31/AE33 multiple-scattering correction factors (C) were determined using two reference systems for the absorption coefficient: 1) 5-wavelength PP_UniMI with low time resolution (12 h, applied to PM2.5 samples); 2) timely-resolved MAAP data at a single wavelength. Using wavelength- and time-independent C values for the AE31 and AE33 obtained with the same reference device, the total HR showed a consistency (i.e. reproducibility) with average values comparable at 95% probability. However, if different reference devices/approaches are used, i.e. MAAP is chosen as reference instead of a PP_UniMI, the HR can be overestimated by 23–30% factor (by both AE31/AE33). This became more evident focusing on HR apportionment: AE33 data (corrected by a wavelength- and time-independent C) showed higher HRFF (+24 ± 1%) and higher HRBC (+10 ± 1%) than that of AE31. Conversely, HRBB and HRBrC were −28 ± 1% and −29 ± 1% lower for AE33 compared to AE31. These inconsistencies were overcome by introducing a wavelength-dependent Cλ for both AE31 and AE33, or using multi-wavelength apportionment methods, highlighting the need for further studies on the influence of wavelength corrections for HR determination. Finally, the temporally-resolved determination of C resulted in a diurnal cycle of the HR not statistically different whatever the source- speciation- apportionment used.

In this paper, a new methodology coupling aerosol optical and chemical parameters in the same source apportionment study is reported. In addition to results on source contributions, this approach provides information such as estimates for the atmospheric absorption Ångström exponent (α) of the sources and mass absorption cross sections (MACs) for fossil fuel emissions at different wavelengths. A multi-time resolution source apportionment study using the Multilinear Engine (ME-2) was performed on a PM10 dataset with different time resolutions (24, 12, and 1 h) collected during two different seasons in Milan (Italy) in 2016. Samples were optically analysed by an in-house polar photometer to retrieve the aerosol absorption coefficient bap (in Mm−1) at four wavelengths (λ=405, 532, 635, and 780 nm) and were chemically characterized for elements, ions, levoglucosan, and carbonaceous components. The dataset joining chemically speciated and optical data was the input for the multi-time resolution receptor model; this approach was proven to strengthen the identification of sources, thus being particularly useful when important chemical markers (e.g. levoglucosan, elemental carbon) are not available. The final solution consisted of eight factors (nitrate, sulfate, resuspended dust, biomass burning, construction works, traffic, industry, aged sea salt); the implemented constraints led to a better physical description of factors and the bootstrap analysis supported the goodness of the solution. As for bap apportionment, consistent with what was expected, biomass burning and traffic were the main contributors to aerosol absorption in the atmosphere. A relevant feature of the approach proposed in this work is the possibility of retrieving a lot of other information about optical parameters; for example, in contrast to the more traditional approach used by optical source apportionment models, here we obtained source-dependent α values without any a priori assumption (α biomass burning =1.83 and α fossil fuels =0.80). In addition, the MACs estimated for fossil fuel emissions were consistent with literature values. It is worth noting that the approach presented here can also be applied using more common receptor models (e.g. EPA PMF instead of multi-time resolution ME-2) if the dataset comprises variables with the same time resolution as well as optical data retrieved by widespread instrumentation (e.g. an Aethalometer instead of in-house instrumentation).

Thermo-optical analysis is widely adopted for the quantitative determination of total, TC, organic, OC and elemental, EC, Carbon in aerosol samples collected on quartz fibre filters. Nevertheless, the methodology presents several issues in particular about the artefacts related to the formation of pyrolytic carbon. It is usually neglected the uncertainty due to the possible presence of brown carbon (BrC) in the sample under analysis, i.e. the optically active fraction of OC produced by biomass burning and with characteristics intermediate between OC and EC. We introduce here a novel correction to the standard thermo-optical protocol based on the determination of the fraction of the sample absorbance due to the (possible) presence of BrC. This is achievable thanks to the coupled use of the Multi Wavelength Absorbance Analyser (MWAA) of the University of Genoa and a standard Sunset Inc. EC/OC analyser. Our correction provides a firmer OC/EC separation as well as an operative quantification of the BrC mass. The methodology has been validated against independent determination of the levoglucosan content in the same filters sent to the Sunset analysis. Corrections up to 23% in the OC and EC values, determined via the standard and new thermo-optical analysis, have been found in a set of PM10 (i.e. Particulate Matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm) samples collected wintertime at a mountain site in Northern Italy.

Atmospheric simulation chambers are exploratory platforms used to study various atmospheric processes at realistic but controlled conditions. We describe here a new facility specifically designed for the research on atmospheric bio-aerosol as well as the protocols to produce, inject, expose and collect bio-aerosols. ChAMBRe (Chamber for Aerosol Modelling and Bio-aerosol Research) is installed at the Physics Department of the University of Genoa, Italy, and it is a node of the EUROCHAMP-2020 consortium. The chamber is made of stainless steel with a total volume of about 2.2 m3. The lifetime of aerosol particle with dimension from a few hundreds of nanometres to a few microns varies from about 2 to 10 h. Characteristic parts of the facility are the equipment and the procedures to grow, inject, and extract bacterial strains in the chamber volume while preserving their viability. Bacteria are part of the atmospheric ecosystem and have impact on several levels as: health related issues, cloud formation, and geochemistry. ChAMBRe will host experiments to study the bacterial viability vs. the air quality level, i.e. the atmospheric concentration of gaseous and aerosol pollutants. In this article, we report the results of the characterization tests as well as of the first experiments performed on two bacterial strains belonging to the Gram-positive and Gram-negative groups. A reproducibility at the 10 % level has been obtained in repeated injections and collection runs with a clean atmosphere, assessing this way the chamber sensitivity for systematic studies on bacterial viability vs. environmental conditions.

We investigate the optical properties of light-absorbing organic carbon (brown carbon) from domestic wood combustion as a function of simulated atmospheric aging. At shorter wavelengths, light absorption by brown carbon from primary organic aerosol (POA) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed during aging was around 10 % and 20 %, respectively, of the total aerosol absorption (brown carbon plus black carbon). The mass absorption cross-section (MAC) determined for black carbon (BC, 13.7 m2 g−1 (geometric standard deviation GSD = 1.1) at 370 nm) was consistent with that recommended by Bond et al. (2006). The corresponding MAC of POA (5.5 m2 g−1 (GSD = 1.2)) was higher than that of SOA (2.4 m2 g−1 (GSD = 1.3)) at 370 nm. However, SOA presents a substantial mass fraction, with a measured average SOA / POA mass ratio after aging of ~ 5 and therefore contributes significantly to the overall light absorption, highlighting the importance of wood-combustion SOA as a source of atmospheric brown carbon. The wavelength dependence of POA and SOA light absorption between 370 nm and 660 nm is well described with absorption Ångström exponents of 4.6 and 5.6, respectively. UV-visible absorbance measurements of water and methanol-extracted OA were also performed showing that the majority of the light-absorbing OA is water insoluble even after aging.

An interlaboratory comparison was performed to evaluate the analytical methods for quantification of anhydrosugars - levoglucosan, mannosan, galactosan - and biosugars - arabitol, glucose and mannitol - in atmospheric aerosol. The performance of 10 laboratories in Italy currently involved in such analyses was investigated on twenty-six PM (particulate matter) ambient filters, three synthetic PM filters and three aqueous standard solutions. An acceptable interlaboratory variability was found, determined as the mean relative standard deviation (RSD%) of the results from the participating laboratories, with the mean RSD% values ranging from 25% to 46% and decreasing with increasing sugar concentration. The investigated methods show good accuracy, evaluated as the percentage error (ε%) related to mean values, since method biases ranged within ±20% for most of the analytes measured in the different laboratories. The detailed investigation (ANOVA analysis at p 0.05) of the contribution of each laboratory to the total variability and the measurement accuracy shows that comparable results are generated by the different methods, despite the great diversity in terms of extraction conditions, chromatographic separation - more recent LC (liquid chromatography) and EC (exchange chromatography) methods compared to more widespread GC (gas chromatography) - and detection systems, namely PAD (pulsed amperometric detection) or mass spectrometry.

Receptor and Chemical Transport Models are commonly used tools in source apportionment studies, even if different expertise is required. We describe an experiment using both approaches to apportion the PM2.5 (i.e., particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters below 2.5 μm) sources in the city of Genoa (Italy). A sampling campaign was carried out to collect PM2.5 samples daily for approximately six month during 2011 in three sites. The subsequent compositional analyses included the speciation of elements, major ions and both organic and elemental carbon; these data produced a large database for receptor modelling through Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF). In the same period, a meteorological and air quality modelling system was implemented based on the mesoscale numerical weather prediction model WRF and the chemical transport model CAMx to obtain meteorological and pollutant concentrations up to a resolution of 1.1 km. The source apportionment was evaluated by CAMx over the same period that was used for the monitoring campaign using the Particulate Source Apportionment Technology tool. Even if the source categorisations were changed (i.e., groups of time-correlated compounds in PMF vs. activity categories in CAMx), the PM2.5 source apportionment by PMF and CAMx produced comparable results. The different information provided by the two approaches (e.g., real-world factor profile by PMF and apportionment of a secondary aerosol by CAMx) was used jointly to elucidate the composition and origin of PM2.5 and to develop a more general methodology. When studying the primary and secondary components of PM, the main anthropogenic sources in the area were road transportation, energy production/industry and maritime emissions, accounting for 40%–50%, 20%–30% and 10%–15%, of PM2.5, respectively.

This paper analyses elemental (EC), organic (OC) and total carbon (TC) concentration in PM2.5 and PM10 samples collected over the last few years within several national and European projects at 37 remote, rural, urban, and traffic sites across the Italian peninsula.The purpose of the study is to obtain a picture of the spatial and seasonal variability of these aerosol species in Italy, and an insight into sources, processes and effects of meteorological conditions.OC and EC showed winter maxima and summer minima at urban and rural locations and an opposite behaviour at remote high altitude sites, where they increase during the warm period due to the rising of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL). The seasonal averages of OC are higher during winter compared to summer at the rural sites in the Po Valley (from 1.4 to 3.5 times), opposite to what usually occurs at rural locations, where OC increases during the warm period. This denotes the marked influence of urban areas on the surrounding rural environment in this densely populated region.The different types of sites exhibit marked differences in the average concentrations of carbonaceous aerosol and OC/EC ratio. This ratio is less sensitive to atmospheric processing than OC and EC concentrations, and hence more representative of different source types. Remote locations are characterised by the lowest levels of OC and especially EC, with OC/EC ratios ranging from 13 to 20, while the maximum OC and EC concentrations are observed at road-traffic influenced urban sites, where the OC/EC ratio ranges between 1 and 3. The highest urban impacts of OC and EC relative to remote and rural background sites occur in the Po Valley, especially in the city of Milan, which has the highest concentrations of PM and TC and low values of the OC/EC ratio. •We compared OC and EC data from different sites across the Italian Peninsula.•OC and EC concentration maxima occur during winter and minima during summer at all except remote sites.•Higher OC levels characterize the Po Valley compared to the rest of Italy both during summer and winter.•Biomass burning for residential heating strongly affects winter OC concentrations in the Po Valley.•Carbonaceous matter contribution to PM2.5 ranges between 37% at rural and 47% at traffic sites, on an annual basis

A PM10 sampling campaign was carried out on board the cruise ship Costa Concordia during three weeks in summer 2011. The ship route was Civitavecchia-Savona-Barcelona-Palma de Mallorca-Malta (Valletta)-Palermo-Civitavecchia. The PM10 composition was measured and utilized to identify and characterize the main PM10 sources along the ship route through receptor modelling, making use of the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) algorithm. A particular attention was given to the emissions related to heavy fuel oil combustion by ships, which is known to be also an important source of secondary sulphate aerosol. Five aerosol sources were resolved by the PMF analysis. The primary contribution of ship emissions to PM10 turned out to be (12 ± 4)%, while secondary ammonium sulphate contributed by (35 ± 5)%. Approximately, 60% of the total sulphate was identified as secondary aerosol while about 20% was attributed to heavy oil combustion in ship engines. The measured concentrations of methanesulphonic acid (MSA) indicated a relevant contribution to the observed sulphate loading by biogenic sulphate, formed by the atmospheric oxidation of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) emitted by marine phytoplankton.

Aerosol particles in coastal areas result from a complex mixing between sea spray aerosols locally generated at the sea surface by the wind-waves interaction processes and a continental component resulting from natural and/or anthropogenic sources. This paper presents a physical and chemical analysis of the aerosol data acquired from May to September 2014 in the Adriatic Sea. Aerosol distributions were measured on the Acqua Alta platform located 15 km off the coast of Venice using two Particle Measuring System probes and a chemical characterization was made using an Ion Chromatography analysis (IC). Our aim is to study both the sea-spray contribution and the anthropogenic influence in the coastal aerosol of this Mediterranean region. To this end, we focus on a comparison between the present data and the aerosol size distributions measured south of the French Mediterranean coast. For air masses of marine origin transported by southern winds on the French coast and by the Sirocco in the Adriatic, we note a good agreement between the concentrations of super-micrometer aerosols measured in the two locations. This indicates a similar sea surface production of sea-spray aerosols formed by bubble bursting processes in the two locations. In contrast, the results show larger concentrations of submicron particles in the North-Western Mediterranean compared to the Adriatic, which result probably from a larger anthropogenic background for marine conditions. In contrast, for a coastal influence, the chemical analysis presented in the present paper seems to indicate a larger importance of the anthropogenic impact in the Northern Adriatic compared to the North-Western Mediterranean. International audience; Environmental simulation chambers (atmospheric/smog chambers) are small- to large-scale facilities (with volumes ranging between a few to several hundred cubic meters), where atmospheric conditions can be monitored in real time under control to reproduce realistic environments and to study interactions among their constituents. Up to now, they have been used mainly to study chemical and photochemical processes that occur in the atmosphere, such as ozone formation and cloud chemistry, but the high versatility of these facilities allows for a wider application covering all fields of atmospheric aerosol science. The biological component of atmospheric aerosol (bioaerosol) is a relevant subject of scientific investigation requiring expertise in both atmospheric science and biology. It raises a strong interest in the scientific community due to its link with human health and the relevant role that biological particles are supposed to play in ice nuclei formation and cloud condensation. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of interaction between bioaerosols and other aerosols, the behavior of airborne microorganisms in different atmospheric conditions and the impact of bioaerosols on radiation and clouds are still poorly known and require deeper investigation. In this work, we present the results of a feasibility study of the use of an atmospheric chamber facility to study bioaerosols under differing atmospheric conditions. Here, we present the experimental setup and the protocol to inject, analyze and extract Bacillus subtilis strain in the Experimental Multiphasic Atmospheric Simulation Chamber, and we investigate the sensitivity of this tool to possible changes in bacteria viability by varying the atmospheric conditions.

The composition of particulate matter near a large steel plant, located inside the town of Genoa (Italy), has been studied since July 2004. Several instruments have been used: a sequential sampler, operated on a daily basis and a two-stage continuous streaker sampler. An optical particle counter (OPC) provided the aerosol size distribution with a 1-min time resolution. PIXE and ED-XRF analysis were performed on the aerosol samples. In particular, the streaker frames were analyzed by PIXE at the new external proton beam facility of INFN-Florence whereas the daily filters were measured by ED-XRF in Genoa. We present here results obtained in a part of the campaign when all the above quoted devices have been operated simultaneously.

The composition of airborne particulate matter in Montelupo Fiorentino (a small town about 20 km west of Florence characterized by the presence of a large number of ceramic and glass factories) was studied by means of continuous and sequential sampling, ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques and statistical methods. The aerosol PM 10 fraction was collected on a daily basis for about 9 months (September 2002-June 2003). To investigate the elemental size distribution, for a shorter period (about 3 weeks) we collected PM 10 , PM 25 and PM 1 simultaneously. A continuous streaker sampler was also used, which allows the study of the aerosol composition with 2 h time resolution. Mass concentrations were obtained using an analytical balance. The elemental analysis was performed at the INFN accelerator laboratory at the Physics Department of Florence University by particle-induced x-ray emission and particle elastic scattering analysis (the latter implemented for this campaign). The use of the two techniques allowed a complete reconstruction of the gravimetric mass. An absolute principal component analysis showed industrial sources to be, on average, the main contributors to PM 10 mass; however, the weight of the 'soil' source (connected to local soil re-suspension and to long-range Saharan transport episodes) becomes dominant during some of the days when the 50 μg m -3 limit is exceeded.

An extensive investigation was carried out for the characterisation of the air particulate composition in Florence. The aim was to determine the aerosol elemental concentrations, as well as to identify pollution sources. For our investigation, the external Particle-Induced X-Ray Emission-Particle-Induced gamma-Ray Emission beam facility of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Van de Graaff accelerator at the Physics Department of the Florence University was used. We report the results of the analysis of a long temporal series (approximately 1 yr) of PM10 particulate samples, collected on Millipore filters on a daily basis in three different sites (characterised by different urban settings). Daily concentrations of more than 20 elements were detected. The long sampling period (approximately 1 yr) allowed a comparison with the air quality recommended values and the identification of seasonal variations. Four main sources (traffic, oil-combustion, soil-dust, and wind transported sea-salt) were extracted with the help of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). An absolute PCA showed traffic to be the major source both in the high traffic site and in the urban background site.

At the KN3000 Van de Graaff accelerator in Florence, PIXE analysis of aerosol samples is routinely performed to measure the concentration of elements with Z>10. In order to allow a complete reconstruction of the aerosol mass, recently we implemented the light element detection by means of in-vacuum Particle Elastic Scattering Analysis (PESA) with 3 MeV protons on particulate matter collected on Teflon filters. PESA with a surface barrier detector (SBD) at a forward angle of 30° was used to estimate the H content; another SBD was placed at 150° backward-angle to determine C, N and O concentrations. Results concerning PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 aerosol fractions, collected on a daily basis over some weeks in a small industrial town near Florence, will be shown.

The composition of particulate matter in the atmosphere of four major Italian towns (Florence, Genoa, Milan and Naples) has been studied with the extensive application of IBA techniques. The aerosol has been collected simultaneously in the four towns during the first weeks of year 2001, by two-stage continuous streaker samplers, which provide the separation of the particulate matter in two fractions. The concentrations in air of about 20 elements, and the total particulate mass, have been extracted in the PM2.5 and PM10 fractions with hourly resolution by PIXE, PIGE and optical analyses of about 2700 samples. IBA analyses have been performed at the 3 MeV external proton beam of the INFN accelerator facility at the University of Florence.

We describe the results of an aerosol sampling campaign performedin 1999 in the medium-size industrial town of La Spezia, in theNorthwest of Italy. We used two-stage continuous streakersamplers in three different sites and periods of the year. This kind of samplers allows the separation of the PM10 andPM2.2 fractions of the particulate matter. Moreover, the hourly resolution in the aerosol collection is particularly useful inan urban environment where, typically, many pollution sourceswith fast variations are present. Up to 1700 samples have beenanalysed by Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) at the INFNaccelerator facility in Florence, obtaining hourly concentrationfor about 20 elements from Na to Pb, with a sensitivity rangingfrom below 1 to about 10 ng m-3. The total hourly aerosolmass has been estimated with an optical analysis of the samesamples performed (before the PIXE analysis) by an equipment designed and mounted in Genoa. An extensive statistical analysisof the data included standard and Absolute Principal ComponentFactor Analysis (PCFA and APCFA) to deduce the compositionand the weight of the major aerosol sources in both fractions.Thorough different statistical approaches, we generally resolvedcontributions from vehicle emission, fossil fuel combustion,soil-road dust and sea salt aerosol.

Two intensive PM10 sampling campaigns were performed in the summers of 2009 and 2010 on the ship Costa Pacifica during cruises in the Western Mediterranean. Samples, mainly collected on an hourly basis, were analysed with different techniques (Particle Induced X-Ray Emission, PIXE; Energy Dispersive - X Ray Fluorescence, ED-XRF; Ion Chromatography, IC; Thermo-optical analysis) to retrieve the PM10 composition and its time pattern. The data were used for obtaining information about the sources of aerosol, with a focus on ship emissions, through apportionment using chemical marker compounds, correlation analysis and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) receptor modelling. For the campaign in 2010, 66% of the aerosol sulphate was found to be anthropogenic, only minor contributions of dust and sea salt sulphate were observed while the biogenic contribution, estimated based on the measurements of MSA, was found to be more important (26%), but influenced by large uncertainties. V and Ni were found to be suitable tracers of ship emissions during the campaigns. Four sources of aerosol were resolved by the PMF analysis; the source having the largest impact on PM10, BC and sulphate was identified as a mixed source, comprising emissions from ships. The correlations between sulphate and V and Ni showed the influence of ship emissions on sulphate in marine air masses. For the leg Palma–Tunis crossing a main ship route, the correlations between aerosol sulphate and V and Ni were particularly strong (r2 = 0.9 for both elements).

An aerosol sampling campaign has been carried out in the town of La Spezia, Italy, from 10th to 31th March 1999, using two-stage continuous streaker samplers that provide, in conjunction with proper IBA techniques, a hourly resolution of aerosol concentration and the separation of the particulate matter in two fractions. Particulate analysis was performed by PIXE at the INFN Van de Graaff accelerator of the University of Florence extracting hourly concentrations for elements from Na to Pb. The total particulate concentration in the two fractions has been determined as well by an optical analysis of the deposition. The statistical analysis of the concentration time series obtained by PIXE and by optical scanning of the streaker frames is presented. The contribution of some pollution source to the local aerosol composition is also discussed.

The particulate emissions near a large steel plant, located inside the town of Genoa (Italy) have been studied from May to December 1997. We have used two-stage continuous streaker samples and subsequent PIXE (particle-induced X-ray emission) analysis with hourly resolution, to follow both seasonal and daily trends. A first streaker sampler remained installed very close to the plant cokery and furnaces, while another sampler was moved to different locations in town. Samples were analysed by PIXE, deducing concentrations for elements from Na to Pb. We have always collected the PM10 fraction of the aerosol: during part of the campaign, the fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM2.5–10) aerosol fractions have been also resolved. We have measured and analysed about 8500 PIXE spectra. The steel plant emissions have been identified and resolved from other aerosol sources using principal component analysis (PCA) and other statistical techniques. Finally, the impact of the steel smelter on its surrounding has been evaluated.

We have studied the possibility of continuous particulate monitoring, by an optical system, on the filters of a two-stage streaker sampler. The streaker deposits, collected for PIXE analysis, have been examined off-line by measuring the attenuation of a light beam. The optical analysis provides, in a few minutes, an estimate of hourly total mass concentrations, over a one week period, for both stages, very useful as a selection for further PIXE irradiation. We describe the set-up and the calibration procedures, where PIXE plays a fundamental role in resolving different aerosol compositions and in validating the prototype performance. The results obtained over 2 weeks of operation and the comparison with the aerosol component determined via PIXE analysis, are also discussed.

An extensive investigation is in progress aiming at the characterisation of the air particulate composition in Florence. We present here the preliminary results concerning the analysis of size-fractionated aerosol samples taken by two-stage streaker samplers in two sites characterised by different urban settings (one in a heavy traffic area, one in a green area). The sampling period (21 January–22 February) includes two days during which the Municipality of Florence has banned the circulation of non-catalytic cars, due to the increase of NO2 above the “recommended safety values”. Hourly concentrations of 20 elements from Na to Pb were determined using the external beam PIXE facility of the I.N.F.N. Van de Graaff accelerator at the Physics Department of the Florence University. Factor analysis on the data set confirms that traffic is the main source of atmospheric pollution in Florence. The ban of non-catalytic cars seems to have produced no effect on the concentration of detected elements (in particular Pb and Br).

Aerosol streaker samplers are presently used in air sampling campaigns in the town of Genova, Italy. They allow the extraction, on an hourly basis, of particulate concentrations and constitute therefore a useful tool for studying highly polluted and complex urban areas. We are using this kind of sampler to monitor, for a long period, the particulate emissions from a big steel smelter located inside the urban area. The filters obtained with the sampler are analysed by Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) deducing pollutants concentrations for elements from Na to Pb. PIXE is a reliable and fast technique to get multi-elemental concentrations with enough sensitivity, from a very large number of samples. We present here the preliminary results of the first sampling period beginning from May 1997.

Streaker aerosol samplers allow an hourly time resolution in the particulate elemental concentrations and are a useful tool for studying air pollution in complex urban areas. We have tested this device for collection efficiency and aerodynamic diameter separation. Our evaluations have been based on the simultaneous exposure of two streaker samplers in the same site (equipped, respectively, with one and two substrates) and of a seven stage Battele impactor. All the filters and the impaction plates have been analysed by PIXE at the INFN accelerator in the University of Florence, Italy. The size distribution of the more abundant elements and the collection efficiency have been evaluated by comparison among the three samplers.

An update of a methodology to extract both the size-segregated source apportionment of atmospheric aerosol and the size distribution of each detected element or compound, is presented. The approach is based on the parallel use of standard low-volume samplers to collect particulate matter (PM) and of an Optical Particle Counter (OPC). The methodology was introduced and validated in previous works for the average size distribution of elemental components of PM: it has now been extended to PM compounds such as ions and carbonaceous aerosol (namely, organic end elemental carbon, OC and EC). Furthermore, the methodology has been now adopted in the frame of a field campaign, proving that it is able to provide not only an average size distribution but also information on the time evolution of the size distribution of specific PM species. Samples were collected in the urban area of Genoa (Italy) and their composition was measured by Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF), Ion Chromatography (IC) and Thermo-optical analysis. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was applied to time series of daily concentration values in PM10 and PM2.5 (i.e. fraction of PM mass with aerodynamic diameter lower that 10 μm and 2.5 μm, respectively) to identify major PM sources, and both PM mass concentration and size-segregated particle number concentration were apportioned. Seven and six sources were respectively resolved in PM10 and PM2.5, with processes related to secondary aerosol formation accounting for about 53% and 57% of PM levels in the two fractions. The new methodology is complementary to size-segregated PM sampling, and it was actually tested against a 13-stage nanoMOUDI cascade impactor. Size distributions obtained with the new methodology and directly measured by the nanoMOUDI turned out to be in good agreement ( R 2 > 0.60) with discrepancies observed for SO 4 2 − only.

The knowledge of size-segregated elemental concentrations in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) gives a useful contribution to the complete chemical characterisation; this information can be obtained by sampling with multi-stage cascade impactors. In this work, samples were collected using a low-pressure 12-stage Small Deposit Impactor and a 13-stage rotating Micro Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor ™ . Both impactors collect the aerosol in an inhomogeneous geometry, which needs a special set-up for X-ray analysis. This work aims at setting up an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) spectrometer to analyse quantitatively size-segregated samples obtained by these impactors. The analysis of cascade impactor samples by ED-XRF is not customary; therefore, as additional consistency test some samples were analysed also by particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), which is more frequently applied to size-segregated samples characterised by small PM quantities. A very good agreement between ED-XRF and PIXE results was obtained for all the detected elements in samples collected with both impactors. The good inter-comparability proves that our methodology is reliable for analysing size-segregated samples by ED-XRF technique. The advantage of this approach is that ED-XRF is cheaper, easier to use, and more widespread than PIXE, thus promoting an intensive use of multi-stage impactors.

We developed and tested a methodology to extract both the size-segregated source apportionment of atmospheric aerosol and the size distribution of each detected element. The experiment is based on the parallel use of a standard low-volume sampler to collect Particulate Matter (PM) and an Optical Particle Counter (OPC). The approach is complementary to size-segregated PM sampling, and it was tested versus a 12-stage cascade impactor. Samples were collected inside the urban area of Genoa (Italy) and their elemental composition was measured by Energy Dispersive-X Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF). Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was applied to time series of elemental concentrations to identify major PM sources, and both PM mass concentration and size-segregated particle number concentration were apportioned. Source profiles and temporal trends extracted by PMF were analyzed together with the OPC data to obtain the size distribution for several elements. The new methodology proved to be reliable for the PM apportionment as well as in providing the elemental concentrations in PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 (PM with aerodynamic diameter, Dae < 10, 2.5, and 1 μm, respectively). The elemental size distributions are in good agreement with those obtained by the cascade impactor for several elements but some discrepancies, in particular for traffic emissions, are stressed and discussed in the text. The new methodology has two main advantages: it only requires standard semi-automatic sampling equipment and compositional analysis and it provides size-segregated information averaged over quite long periods (typically several months). This is particularly important since campaigns with cascade impactors are generally laborious and thus limited to short periods.

The results from a study carried out in the urban area of Genoa, Italy, where a large steel smelter recently shut down are presented. Nowadays, high-time resolved aerosol studies are mandatory to better understand atmospheric processes, such as formation, removal, transport, deposition or chemical reactions. This work focuses on PM10 physical and chemical characterisation with high-time resolution: elements (from Na to Pb), ions and OC/EC fractions concentration were determined during two weeks in summer and two in winter 2006 with 4-hours resolution. Further measurements aimed at hourly elemental characterisation of fine and coarse fractions and at the determination of particles number concentration in the 0.25-32 μm size range in 31 bins. The chemical mass closure was carried out in both seasons, enhancing intra-day differences in PM10 composition. In Milan, the highest contribution came from organic matter (34% and 33% in summer and winter, respectively); other important contributors were secondary inorganic compounds (16% and 24% in summer and winter, respectively) and, in summer, crustal matter (14%). Temporal trends showed strong variations in PM10 composition during contiguous time-slots and diurnal variations in different components contribution were identified. Moreover, peculiar phenomena, which would have hardly been detected with 24-hours samplings, were evidenced. Particles removal due to precipitations, aerosol local production and long range transport were studied in detail. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008.

Daily time series measurements of elements or compounds are widely used to apportion the contribution of specific sources of particulate matter concentration in the atmosphere. We present results obtained for the urban area of Genoa (Italy) based on several hundred of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 daily samples collected in sites with different geo-morphological and urbanization characteristics. Elemental concentrations of Na to Pb were obtained through Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF), and the contributions of specific sources of particulate matter (PM) concentration were apportioned through Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). By sampling at different sites we were able to obtain, in each PM fraction, the average and stable values for the tracers of specific sources, in particular traffic (Cu, Zn, Pb) and heavy oil combustion (V, Ni). We could also identify and quote the contamination of anthropogenic PM in "natural" sources (sea, soil dust). Sampling at several sites in the same urban area allowed us to resolve local characteristics as well as to quote average values.

Sub-micron sized particles are of increasing concern owing to their effects on human health and on the environment. Up to now there are still very few studies on PM I (i.e. particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter smaller than 1 mu m) chemical characterisation; the sub-micron sized fraction is not under regulations although it is of interest because it is almost exclusively associated to anthropogenic sources. To perform the first large-scale assessment of sub-micron sized aerosol concentrations, composition and sources, two monitoring campaigns at three urban sites in Italy were carried out during the wintertime and summertime of 2004. Chemical characterisation (elements, soluble ionic fraction, elemental and organic carbon) was carried out on PM1 samples: major contributions were due to organic matter (about 30\% in summer and 50\% in winter) and ammonium sulphate (about 10\% in winter and 40\% in summer). During the cold season, nitrates also contributed up to 30\% in Milan (lower contributions were registered at the other two urban sites). Chemical mass closure was achieved with an unaccounted mass in the range 14-22\%. Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF) was applied to identify the major submicron sized particles' sources. PIXE and XRF are very effective techniques in atmospheric aerosol investigation, therefore they are extensively used by the authors. In this work an inter-laboratory comparison of the results obtained analysing several samples (collected on different substrata) with both techniques is presented: the samples were analysed by PIXE (in Florence, at the 3 MV Tandetron accelerator of LABEC laboratory) and by XRF (in Genoa and Milan, where two Oxford XRF instruments are operational). The results of the three sets of measurements are in good agreement for all the analysed samples. The aim of this work was also to compare PIXE and XRF performance in atmospheric aerosol analysis with the routine set-up currently in use at the three laboratories, to determine the best technique to be applied depending on the substratum used for aerosol sampling and the main elements of interest for each specific research project. Results of the comparison between the minimum detection limits of both techniques will be shown for all the measured elements, for different substrata (Teflon, polycarbonate and cellulose mixed esters).

Atmospheric aerosols in the PM 10 fraction have been simultaneously sampled at three sites in the Genoa urban and suburban area during the second half of 2005, and information on the elemental composition has been gathered through energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. Thanks to the simultaneous measurements and wind information, a few aerosol transport and transformation processes originated from the nearby sea and in the neighbouring Po Valley have been described. Sea salt concentrations at the three sites were well correlated and often related to Southern sector winds; moreover, by examining the Cl/Na ratio at two sites the time scale for Cl depletion in particulate matter has been estimated as 1–1.5 h for the Genoa atmosphere. During a Northerly gale, excess elemental Si concentrations (peaking more than 4 μg m − 3 ) were found at two sites, and were ascribed to an unknown local source. Finally, during an 11-day long ‘heat wave’ large concentrations for total PM 10 , dust and secondary compounds have been found; these large concentrations lead to a number of exceedances of air quality standards, and have been ascribed to advection from the Po Valley.

The particulate matter (PM) concentration and composition, the PM10, PM2.5, PM1 fractions, were studied in the urban area of Genoa, a coastal town in the northwest of Italy. Two instruments, the continuous monitor TEOM and the sequential sampler PARTISOL, were operated almost continuously on the same site from July 2001 to September 2004. Samples collected by PARTISOL were weighted to obtain PM concentration and then analysed by PIXE (particle induced X-ray emission) and by ED-XRF (energy dispersion X-ray fluorescence), obtaining concentrations for elements from Na to Pb. Some of the filters used in the TEOM microbalance were analysed by ED-XRF to calculate Pb concentration values averaged over 7-30 d periods.

{[1] Atmospheric aerosols in the PM(10) and PM(1) fractions have been sampled at the Global Atmospheric Watch station Mount Cimone, Italy ( 2165 m above mean sea level) for 3 months during summer 2004, and simultaneous size distributions have been derived by means of an optical particle counter. Samples have been analyzed by X-ray fluorescence, ion chromatography, and thermal-optical methodology in order to quantify their elemental, ionic, and carbonaceous constituents. The concentration of PM10 was 16.1 +/- 9.8 mu g m(-)3 ( average and standard deviation). Source apportionment allowed us to identify, quantify and characterize the following aerosol classes: anthropogenic pollution ( 10 mu g m(-3)), mineral dust ( 4 mu g m(-3)), and sea salt ( 0.2 mu g m(-3)). Pollution has been further split into ammonium sulfate (44\%), organic matter (42\%), and other compounds (14\%). The nitrate/sulfate ratio in the polluted aerosol was 0.1. Fine particles have been completely related to the polluted aerosol component, and they represented 70\% in weight of pollution. Coarse particles characterized the dust and salt components, and crustal oxides have been found to be the largest responsible for the aerosol concentration variations that occurred during the campaign. Nitrate has also been found in the coarse particles, representing similar to 10\% of mineral dust. The analysis of the transport mechanisms responsible for aerosol fluctuations permitted us to identify the origin of the major aerosol components: Pollution has been ascribed to regional transport driven by boundary layer meteorology, whereas mineral dust has been related to long-range transport events originating in the Sahara and Sahel. A particularly significant Saharan episode has been identified on 10 August 2004 ( PM(10) daily concentration, 69.9 mu g m(-3)). Average elemental ratios for the African dust events were as follows: Si/Al = 2.31, Fe/Ca = 0.94, Ca/Al = 0.90, K/Ca = 0.44, Ti/Ca = 0.11, and Ti/Fe = 0.12.}

The paper presents methodological innovations introduced in the characterisation of urban aerosol collected in Italy in a recent campaign. Two complementary ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques were used to analyse Nuclepore filters used in continuous streaker samplers to collect airborn particles in four Italian towns. Na to Pb elemental concentrations were obtained by particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE), while time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) produced, on the same samples, time trends for several elements and molecular fragments. In addition, light attenuation measurements were used as a tracer for black carbon. The data produced by these three techniques was merged into a unique data set to address the characterisation of particulate matter sources. Correlations between elemental concentration trends (PIXE) and relative trends for molecular fragments (ToF-SIMS) and black carbon (light attenuation) have been studied by cluster and principal component analysis. Fine particulate has become one of the biggest concerns in Italian cities pollution; the study of its composition is a powerful tool to evaluate the effects on health and identify pollution sources. PIXE is an established technique for particulate analysis (being multi‐elemental, sensitive, fast, non‐destructive and requiring no sample preparations) and has been extensively used, in combination with other IBA techniques, for particulate characterization in Italian urban environments. Here we report the preliminary results on the analysis of the aerosol collected, by two‐stage continuous streaker samplers, in two Italian cities, Florence and Milan, during July 2001. Elemental concentrations have been extracted in the fine and coarse fractions, with hourly resolution, by PIXE‐PIGE analysis, performed at the 3 MeV external proton beam INFN facility at the University of Florence.

The hourly concentrations in air of about 20 elements have been extracted in the fine and coarse fractions of PM10 by particle induced X-ray (and gamma-ray) emission, PIXE (and PIGE), analysis of about 2700 hourly samples. The coupled use of streaker samplers and IBA techniques made distinguishable time patterns typical of urban environments as well as fast and occasional episodes. Absolute principal component factor analysis (APCFA) and other statistical approaches have been used to obtain a sintetic apportionment of the sources of particulate matter.
