It differentiates between folk or traditional culture from elite and popular cultures. The first chapter looks at folk speech, illustrating the different ways ideas are expressed by the different cultures. Kentucky proverbs and other expressions are covered in the second chapter. Rural riddles, puzzles, and folk rhymes are offered in the third and fourth chapters. Customs, beliefs, and superstitions, including home remedies, are discussed in the fifth chapter and folk songs and tales are offered in the sixth and seventh chapters.
