Abstract

We have studied the adsorption of water on a Cl covered Cu(100) surface using both low energy electron diffraction (LEED) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. On the Cu{100}-c(2×2)-Cl surface water is shown to form a bilayer, which is weakly bound to the surface.

Abstract

We have employed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterise the growth and thermal stability of a Bi thin film on the five-fold icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn surface. The growth can be characterised as Stranski-Krastanov, in agreement with previous STM studies. As a function of annealing temperature, the multilayer desorbs first and thereafter coverages of 1 ML and 0.5 ML are stable for significant temperature ranges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The bonding geometry of nitrogen adsorbed on Rh(110) has been determined by means of low-energy-electron-diffraction I-V analysis. The nitrogen atoms are found to be adsorbed in the long bridge site with rows of Rh atoms missing in the [001] direction, and with a metal-nitrogen bond length similar to that found on other metal surfaces. This gives an overall structure in which the Rh and the adsorbate form metal-nitrogen-metal chains. Ultraviolet photoemission shows that the valence-band emission induced by nitrogen consists of a single peak which disperses strongly to higher energy in one azimuth. This is consistent with a band due to nitrogen p states which overlap most strongly along the chains.
