This article presents information on growing number of lawsuits claiming damages for negligence by doctors. It is informed that medical litigation has become a huge drain on healthcare budgets, and while the problem is most extreme in the U.S., other countries such as Great Britain and Australia are following this lead. However, the litigations are also prompting a subtle and insidious change in the way that medicine is practiced, which affects anyone who consults a health professional. It is further informed that while defensive medicine in the U.S. has long been known about, in the past few years evidence has emerged that reveals the breadth and scale of this practice in other countries, such as Great Britain.
