This study performed a comparative analysis of changes in the operating status of initial surviving disaster‐stricken businesses and non‐disaster‐stricken businesses in Lushan County, China, after a devastating earthquake on 20 April 2013. It used a logistic regression model to explore the key factors associated with 'post‐disaster continued business operation' in the long term. Field data were collected from 1,078 businesses and questionnaire data from 263 small businesses between 2013 and 2017. The results indicate that a higher proportion of initial surviving disaster‐stricken businesses than non‐disaster‐stricken businesses managed to remain operational in each observation period. The continued operation of disaster‐stricken businesses after the earthquake was positively associated with the owner's age, previous disaster experience, pre‐disaster financial conditions, closure duration, and borrowing money from family or friends. A negative association was found with the size of the business. The findings serve as a vital reference for strategies to promote post‐disaster continued business operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The study objective was to evaluate the impact of a population-level intervention (the IA Agreement) on the of one-year risk for long-term sickness absence spells (LSAS) among young and middle aged workers in Norway. Methods: Using an observational design, we conducted a quasi-experimental study to analyse registry data on individual LSAS for all employed individuals in 2000 (n = 298,690) and 2005 (n = 352,618), born in Norway between 1976 and 1967. The intervention of interest was the tripartite agreement for a more inclusive working life (the IA Agreement). We estimated difference in pre-post differences (DID) in LSAS between individuals working in IA companies with the intervention and companies without, in 2000 and 2005. We used logistic regression models and present odds ratios (DID OR) with accompanying 95% CI. We stratified analyses by sex, industry and company size. Results: We found no significant change in the overall risk of long-term sickness absence spells after implementing the intervention among young and middle aged workers. Stratified by sex, the intervention resulted in a slight decrease in LSAS risk among female workers (DID OR 0.93 (0.91-0.96)) while the intervention showed no impact among male workers (DID OR 1.01 (0.97-1.06)). We found that companies signing the IA Agreement were large (≥50 employees) and often within the manufacturing and health and social sectors. In large manufacturing companies, we found a reduction in LSAS, among workers both in companies with and without the intervention, resulting in no statistically significant impact of the IA intervention. In large health and social companies, we found an increase in LSAS among workers both in companies with and without the intervention. The increase was smaller among the workers in companies offering the IA intervention compared with workers in companies without, resulting in a positive impact of the IA intervention in the health and social industry. This impact was statistically significant only among female workers. Conclusions: The results indicate that the impact of the IA Agreement on the risk of long-term sickness absence spells varies considerably depending on sex and industry. These findings suggest that reducing LSAS may warrant industry-specific interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how much the Italian manufacturing companies are ready to be concretely involved in the so-called "Industry 4.0" (I4.0) journey. In particular, this paper focuses on analyzing the knowledge and adoption levels of specific I4.0 enabling technologies, also considering how organizations are involved and which are the main benefits and obstacles. Design/methodology/approach: A descriptive survey has been carried out on a total of 103 respondents related to manufacturing companies of different sizes. Data collected were analyzed in order to answer five specific research questions. Findings: The findings from the survey demonstrate that Italian manufacturing companies are in different positions in their journey toward the I4.0 paradigm, mainly depending on their size and informatization level. Furthermore, not all the business functions are adequately involved in this transformation and their awareness about this new paradigm seems quite low because of the absence of specific managerial roles to guide this revolution. Finally, there are strong differences concerning both benefits and obstacles related to the adoption of I4.0 paradigm, depending on the technology adoption level. Research limitations/implications: Future research should focus on developing case studies about pilot I4.0 practitioners in order to understand the root cause of successful cases. Both managerial and practical references should be developed, helping Italian manufacturing enterprises to consolidate and strengthen their position in global competitive market. Finally, it would be interesting to carry out the same study in other countries in order to make comparisons and suitable benchmark analyses. Originality/value: Despite scholars have debated about the adoption of technologies and the benefits related to the I4.0 paradigm, to the best of authors' knowledge, only a few empirical surveys have been carried out until now on the adoption level of I4.0 principles in the manufacturing sector of a specific country. INNOVATIONS in business ,GAME theory ,ACQUISITION of data ,INDUSTRIAL policy ,BUSINESS size - Abstract
The Circular Economy is a relatively immature research landscape, particularly when considered from an Innovation perspective. However it is gaining momentum and according to critics offers a solution to many of the issues currently being experienced around the world, in terms of resource shortages and the energy, food, water nexus. This study attempts to explore examples of products and services, collected by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to begin to understand which size of companies are developing them, what types of innovations they represent and how they might diffuse to scale. The contribution of this paper is to introduce, define and raise awareness of circular innovations whilst beginning to articulate how analysis of CE products and service might be undertaken by further studies, with the aim of informing companies and policy-makers accordingly. CAPITAL structure ,ACQUISITION of data ,BUSINESS size ,ECONOMIC development ,META-analysis - Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the status of studies on capital structure determinants in the past 40 years. This paper highlights the major gaps in the literature on determinants of capital structure and also aims to raise specific questions for future research.Design/methodology/approach The prominence of research is assessed by studying the year of publication and region, level of economic development, firm size, data collection methods, data analysis techniques and theoretical models of capital structure from the selected papers. The review is based on 167 papers published from 1972 to 2013 in various peer-reviewed journals. The relationship of determinants of capital structure is analyzed with the help of meta-analysis.Findings Major findings show an increase of interest in research on determinants of capital structure of the firms located in emerging markets. However, it is observed that these regions are still under-examined which provides more scope for research both empirical and survey-based studies. Majority of research studies are conducted on large-sized firms by using secondary data and regression-based models for the analysis, whereas studies on small-sized firms are very meager. As majority of the research papers are written only at the organizational level, the impact of leverage on various industries is yet to be examined. The review highlights the major determinants of capital structure and their relationship with leverage. It also reveals the dominance of pecking order theory in explaining capital structure of firms theoretically as well as statistically.Originality/value The paper covers a considerable period of time (1972-2013). Among very few review papers on capital structure research, to the best of authors’ knowledge; this is the first review to identify what is missing in the literature on the determinants of capital structure while offering recommendations for future studies. It also synthesize the findings of empirical studies on determinants of capital structure statistically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHANGE management ,SMALL business ,TECHNOLOGICAL innovations ,ACQUISITION of data ,SERVICE industries ,BUSINESS size - Abstract
Change management implementation has so far been studied mainly in large companies (i.e. high-tech and multinational enterprises). This exploratory paper investigates if change management practices are also applied by innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Drawing on a database collected from 319 innovative SMEs in Romania from ICT sector, we explore peculiarities and trends on SMEs change management process, based on data base analysis from 2014. The survey furthermore focuses on the motives and perceived challenges when SMEs adopt change management practices. Within the survey, we define innovative SMEs as small and medium enterprises who introduce innovation practices reflecting exploration and exploitation. We find that the responding SMEs engage in many change practices and have increasingly adopted such practices during the past years. As a limitation of our study, we investigate only companies from ITC sector, because was difficult to identify a large sample of innovative SMEs on areas related to manufacturing and services industries, but medium-sized firms are on average more heavily involved in change process than their smaller counterparts. We furthermore find that ITC innovative SMEs pursue change management primarily for market-related motives such as meeting customer demands, or keeping up with competitors. Their most important challenges relate to organizational and cultural issues as a consequence of dealing with increased external contacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper describes an exploratory study of stakeholder feedback on a Hotel Integration project from the perspective of students, HR personnel working in a teaching hotel, and subject teachers. Hotel Integration was one of the principal components in the delivery of a program entitled “Human Resources Management (HRM) in the Tourism and Hotel Industry.” The design and implementation focused on promoting student-centered learning. Data were collected from students, teachers and HR staff, and qualitative analysis undertaken to identify similarities and differences in their views. The paper presents dendrograms representing these views and discusses participants' experiences of the project. In the analysis, feedback was classified into four categories; Planning, Implementation and Management of the Project, Project Evaluation; and Consideration and Improvement of Future Learning Activities. The results generally showed that the confidentiality of hotel data and large class sizes were the major issues affecting the design and implementation of the integration project. The paper closes by suggesting recommendations and considerations for future projects. For example, the student-centered learning approach could be further explained and promoted to students in order to enhance its popularity and general acceptance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Real time production monitoring systems (PMSs) is an alternative to manual data collection and captures most of the required production data without human intervention. The general objective of the current study is to analyse PMSs and to offer particular solutions for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The subtasks to be solved in the case of each particular PMS include determining relevant parameters, designing PMS and development of the data analysis and prognosis model for short term and long term planning. The selection of suitable PMS components and relevant parameters and the development of lathe cutting unit measuring system are described in the case study. Defendec Inc. and National Instruments Corporation wireless components were adopted to implement a part of the PMS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a model in a competitive market where traders choose between a small and a large firm to acquire costly private information, but they also obtain free public information by observing equilibrium share prices. Our major finding is the existence of a noisy rational expectation competitive equilibrium, in which there are more informed traders of the large firm than those of the small firm. As a result, share prices of the large firm are more informative than those of the small firm. Our empirical study supports the analytical results. By using a bivariate vector autoregressive regression, we are able to conduct a variance decomposition of share prices for different size portfolios. We find that prices of large-size portfolios are more informative because non-value-related price shocks are less important in driving price changes of large-size portfolios than in the case of small-size portfolios.
