OBJECTIVES To compare the effects of Narrow band CE-Chirps (NB CE-Chirps) and tone bursts (TBs) at 500 Hz and 1000 Hz on the amplitudes and latencies in cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs). DESIGN Thirty-one healthy adult volunteers of varying ages were tested by air conduction at 95 dB nHL. Recording conditions were randomized for each participant and each modality was tested twice. RESULTS NB CE-Chirps showed larger corrected amplitudes than TBs at 500 Hz (p < 0.001) which were themselves larger than NB CE-Chirps and TBs at 1000 Hz (p < 0.001). In older volunteers, NB CE-Chirps 500 and 1000 Hz had significantly higher response rates than TBs 500 Hz (p = 0.039). A negative correlation was observed between the corrected amplitudes and the age of the participants regardless of the stimulus and the frequency studied. The p13 and n23 latencies were not correlated with the age of the subjects. CONCLUSIONS NB CE-Chirps at 500 Hz improved the corrected amplitudes of waveforms in cVEMPs as a result of a better frequency specificity compared with TBs. In the elderly, eliciting cVEMPs at a frequency of 1000 Hz might not be necessary to improve response rates with NB CE-Chirps. Additional studies including a higher number of healthy participants and patients with vestibular disorders are required to confirm these observations.

We examined the frequency specificity of amplitude envelope patterns in 4 frequency bands, which universally appeared through factor analyses applied to power fluctuations of critical-band filtered speech sounds in 8 different languages/dialects [Ueda and Nakajima (2017). Sci. Rep., 7 (42468)]. A series of 3 perceptual experiments with noise-vocoded speech of Japanese sentences was conducted. Nearly perfect (92–94%) mora recognition was achieved, without any extensive training, in a control condition in which 4-band noise-vocoded speech was employed (Experiments 1–3). Blending amplitude envelope patterns of the frequency bands, which resulted in reducing the number of amplitude envelope patterns while keeping the average spectral levels unchanged, revealed a clear deteriorating effect on intelligibility (Experiment 1). Exchanging amplitude envelope patterns brought generally detrimental effects on intelligibility, especially when involving the 2 lowest bands ( ≲ 1850 Hz; Experiment 2). Exchanging spectral levels averaged in time had a small but significant deteriorating effect on intelligibility in a few conditions (Experiment 3). Frequency specificity in low-frequency-band envelope patterns thus turned out to be conspicuous in speech perception.

Hearing sensitivity has been extensively investigated, often by measuring the auditory brainstem response (ABR). ABR measurements are relatively non-invasive, easy to reproduce, and allow the assessment of sensitivity when psychophysical data are difficult to obtain. However, the experimental methods differ greatly in respect to stimulation, which may result in different audiograms. We used three different methods in the same individual frogs: Stimulating with brief tone bursts (tABR), long-duration tones (ltABR), and masked ABR (mABR) where transients are masked by a long-duration sinusoid, and the sensitivity is assessed by the difference between unmasked and masked ABR. We measured sensitivity in a range from 100 to 3500 Hz, and the resulting audiograms show two sensitivity peaks at 400-600 Hz and 1500-1600 Hz (both sensitive down to 30 dB re. 20 µPa). We found similar results below 1000 Hz, but when stimulating with long-duration tones, the sensitivity decreased more rapidly above this frequency. We showed that the frequency specificity of tone bursts becomes poorly defined with shorter duration at low frequencies. Comparisons between subjectively (visual inspection by researchers) and objectively (thresholds defined by SNR) defined audiograms showed very little variation. In conclusion the mABR method gave the most sensitive audiograms. The tABR method showed a similar audiogram, when using relatively long-duration tone bursts (25 ms). The ltABR method is not a good choice for studying hearing thresholds above 1000 Hz, because of the bias introduced by spike rate saturation in the nerve fibers and their inability to phase lock.

Envelope following responses (EFRs) evoked by the periodicity of voicing in vowels are elicited at the fundamental frequency of voice (f0), irrespective of the harmonics that initiate it. One approach of improving the frequency specificity of vowel stimuli without increasing test-time is by altering the f0 selectively in one or more formants. The harmonics contributing to an EFR can then be differentiated by the unique f0 at which the EFRs are elicited. The advantages of using such an approach would be increased frequency specificity and efficiency, given that multiple EFRs can be evaluated in a certain test-time. However, multiple EFRs elicited simultaneously could interact and lead to altered amplitudes and outcomes. To this end, the present study aimed to evaluate: (i) if simultaneous recording of two EFRs, one elicited by harmonics in the first formant (F1) and one elicited by harmonics in the second and higher formants (F2+), leads to attenuation or enhancement of EFR amplitude, and (ii) if simultaneous measurement of two EFRs affects its accuracy and anticipated efficiency. In a group of 22 young adults with normal hearing, EFRs were elicited by F1 and F2+ bands of /u/, /a/ and /i/ when F1 and F2+ were presented independently (individual), when F1 and F2+ were presented simultaneously (dual), and when F1 or F2+ was presented with spectrally matched Gaussian noise of the other (noise). Repeated-measures analysis of variance indicated no significant group differences in EFR amplitudes between any of the conditions, suggesting minimal between-EFR interactions. Between-participant variability was evident, however, significant changes were evident only in a third of the participants for the stimulus /u/ F1. For the majority of stimuli, the change between individual and dual conditions was positively correlated with the change between individual and noise conditions, suggesting that interaction-based changes in EFR amplitude, when present, were likely due to the restriction of cochlear regions of excitation in the presence of a competing stimulus. The amplitude of residual noise was significantly higher in the dual or noise relative to the individual conditions, although the mean differences were very small (

Exposure to audiovisual stimuli with a consistent spatial misalignment seems to result in a recalibration of unisensory auditory spatial representations. The previous studies have suggested that this so-called ventriloquism aftereffect is confined to the trained region of space, but yielded inconsistent results as to whether or not recalibration generalizes to untrained sound frequencies. Here, we reassessed the spatial and frequency specificity of the ventriloquism aftereffect by testing whether auditory spatial perception can be independently recalibrated for two different sound frequencies and/or at two different spatial locations. Recalibration was confined to locations within the trained hemifield, suggesting that spatial representations were independently adjusted for the two hemifields. The frequency specificity of the ventriloquism aftereffect depended on the presence or the absence of conflicting audiovisual adaptation stimuli within the same hemifield. Moreover, adaptation of two different sound frequencies in opposite directions (leftward vs. rightward) resulted in a selective suppression of leftward recalibration, even when the adapting stimuli were presented in different hemifields. Thus, instead of representing a fixed stimulus-driven process, cross-modal recalibration seems to critically depend on the sensory context and takes into account inconsistencies in the cross-modal input.

Stimulus-focused attention enhances the processing of auditory stimuli, which is indicated by enhanced neural activity. In situations where fast responses are required, attention may not only serve as a means to gain more information about the relevant stimulus, but it may provide a processing speed gain as well. In two experiments we investigated whether attentional focusing decreased the latency of the auditory N1 event related potential. In Experiment 1 slowly emerging, soft (20 dB sensation level) sounds were presented in two conditions, in which participants performed a sound-detection task or watched a silent movie and ignored the sounds. N1 latency was shorter in the sound-detection task in comparison to the ignore condition. In Experiment 2 we investigated whether the attentional N1 latency-decrease was caused by a frequency-specific attentional preparation or not. To this end, tone sequences were presented with a single tone frequency or with four different frequencies. N1 latency was shorter in the sound-detection task in comparison to the ignore condition regardless the number of frequencies. These results suggest that stimulus-focused attention increases stimulus processing speed by generally increasing sensory gain.

We investigated how physiologically observed forward suppression interacts with stimulus frequency in neuronal responses in the guinea pig auditory cortex. The temporal order and frequency proximity of sounds influence both their perception and neuronal responses. Psychophysically, preceding sounds (conditioners) can make successive sounds (probes) harder to hear. These effects are larger when the two sounds are spectrally similar. Physiological forward suppression is usually maximal for conditioner tones near to a unit’s characteristic frequency (CF), the frequency to which a neuron is most sensitive. However, in most physiological studies, the frequency of the probe tone and CF are identical, so the role of unit CF and probe frequency cannot be distinguished. Here, we systemically varied the frequency of the probe tone, and found that the tuning of suppression was often more closely related to the frequency of the probe tone than to the unit’s CF, i.e. suppressed tuning was specific to probe frequency. This relationship was maintained for all measured gaps between the conditioner and the probe tones. However, when the probe frequency and CF were similar, CF tended to determine suppressed tuning. In addition, the bandwidth of suppression was slightly wider for off-CF probes. Changes in tuning were also reflected in the firing rate in response to probe tones, which was maximally reduced when probe and conditioner tones were matched in frequency. These data are consistent with the idea that cortical neurons receive convergent inputs with a wide range of tuning properties that can adapt independently.

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) recorded with simultaneous presentation of multiple tones modulated from 77–105 Hz exhibit frequency specificity and can be acquired with monotic or dichotic stimulation. This study examined the frequency specificity and dichotic characteristics of 40 Hz ASSRs recorded with amplitude-modulated (AM) probe tones and unmodulated (UM) or AM interfering tones in 27 normal-hearing adults. The effects on ASSR amplitudes of monotically or dichotically presented interfering tones of various frequency, modulation depth, and modulation rate were studied. Significant decreases in ASSR amplitudes occurred when the UM interfering tone was monotic, higher in frequency, and approximately within an octave of the probe tone. ASSR amplitudes were also reduced when the AM interfering tone was monotic and modulated at a lower depth and was an octave above the probe tone. Probe and interfering AM tones modulated at different rates produced similar reductions in amplitude for ASSRs acquired with monotic and dichotic stimulation. The findings of this study contribute to clarifying the carrier and temporal envelope interactions between tonal stimuli. Description of the effects of these stimulus parameters on 40 Hz ASSRs can benefit clinical applications of this technique, including evaluating auditory function in adults not capable of participating in behavioral audiometric tests. Las respuestas auditivas de estado estable (ASSR) registradas con una presentación simultánea de múltiples tonos modulados desde 77 a 105 Hz, exhiben especificidad frecuencial y puede ser adquiridas con estimulación monótica o dicótica. Este estudio examinó la especificidad frecuencial y las características dicóticas de las ASSR de 40 Hz registradas con sondas de prueba de amplitud modulada (AM) y con tonos de interferencia no modulados (UM), en 27 sujetos adultos normoyentes. Se estudiaron los efectos sobre las amplitudes de las ASSR producto de tonos de interferencia presentados en forma monótica o dicótica, caracterizados por diferentes frecuencias, profundidades de modulación y tasa de modulación. Ocurrieron reducciones significativas en la amplitud de las ASSR cuando el tono de interferencia UM era monótico, de frecuencia mayor, y aproximadamente dentro de una octava del tono de prueba. Las amplitudes de las ASSR también se redujeron cuando el tono de interferencia de AM era monótico y modulado a una profundidad menor y a una octava por encima del tono de prueba. Los tonos de prueba y de interferencia con AM, modulados a diferentes tasas, produjeron reducciones similares en la amplitud de las ASSR, cuando se lograban con estimulación monótica o dicótica. Los hallazgos de este estudio contribuyen a aclarar las interacciones con la envolvente temporal y la del portador, entre estímulos tonales. La descripción de los efectos de estos parámetros del estímulo sobre las ASSR de 40 Hz pueden beneficiar la aplicación clínica de esta técnica, incluyendo la evaluación de funciones auditivas en adultos no capaces de participar en pruebas audiométricas conductuales.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of brief-tone stimulus duration on the amplitude of the brain stem auditory steady-state response (ASSR), both in single- and multiple-stimulus conditions. DESIGN In Experiment 1, the primary stimuli were Blackman-windowed 500- and 2000-Hz brief tones presented using repetition rates of 79 and 83 Hz, respectively. Stimuli had durations ranging from 0.5 to 12 msec. In the single-stimulus condition, these two stimuli were presented dichotically, whereas in the four-stimulus multiple-stimulus condition, instead of being presented alone, each stimulus was combined with three interfering stimuli, which were also Blackman-windowed brief tones spaced one octave apart, and presented at rates of 77 to 96 Hz. In Experiment 2, the effect of brief-tone duration and the effect of interfering stimuli were further studied by systematically removing interfering stimuli from the multiple stimuli, with the goal of determining which specific stimuli in the multiple stimuli were responsible for the interference. In both experiments, stimuli were presented at 75 ppe dB SPL. The subjects were normal-hearing adults, who relaxed or slept during the recording sessions. RESULTS Experiment 1: ASSR amplitudes increased as stimulus duration decreased in the single-stimulus condition, for both 500 and 2000 Hz. However, amplitudes did not significantly increase until stimuli were quite brief (2 msec for 2000 Hz; 6 msec for 500 Hz). In the four-stimulus multiple-stimulus condition, the pattern of amplitude increase with decreasing stimulus duration at 2000 Hz was similar to that in the single-stimulus condition, although amplitudes at all durations were reduced. However, for 500-Hz stimuli in the four-stimulus multiple-stimulus condition, ASSR amplitudes showed no change as stimulus duration decreased. Experiment 2: for 2000-Hz stimuli, the 4000-Hz interfering stimuli resulted in the largest change in amplitude, the 1000-Hz interfering stimuli had a small effect, and the 500-Hz interfering stimuli had no effect. For 500-Hz stimuli, the 1000-Hz interfering stimuli had the greatest effect, the 2000-Hz interfering stimuli the next largest, and the 4000-Hz interfering stimuli a small effect. The interference effects for 500-Hz stimuli occurred only for brief (< or =6 msec) stimuli, with no effects of the interfering stimuli when the 500-Hz stimuli were 8 or 12 msec in duration. CONCLUSION Although brief tones may result in larger-amplitude ASSRs, their duration must be quite brief (not more than three to four cycles) to show a significant amplitude increase. Moreover, when presented together with other stimuli in the multiple-stimulus technique, response interference reduces the amplitudes of ASSRs, and for 500 Hz removes the amplitude gain normally seen with decreasing duration. Brief-tone stimuli, therefore, may not be optimal for ASSR threshold estimation, especially because of the compromise in frequency specificity accompanying the use of very brief tones.

Objective The goal of this study was to determine whether tonebursts gated on and off using a nonlinear, exact-Blackman-gating function would be a more frequency-specific stimulus for auditory brain stem response audiometry than the more traditional 2-1-2 cycle linearly gated toneburst. Design Toneburst ABRs were recorded in 10 adults with normal hearing and in 18 adults with sloping high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. It was hypothesized that any advantage of the Blackman stimuli for frequency-specific threshold assessment should be evident in hearing-impaired subjects with hearing loss confined to the 2000 to 4000 Hz frequency region since spectral splatter in the toneburst stimuli could lead to an underestimation of hearing loss based on the ABR thresholds. ABR stimuli consisted of 2000- and 4000-Hz 2-1-2 (rise-plateau-fall) cycle linearly gated tonebursts and 1-0-1 msec exact-Blackman-gated tonebursts. An additional 0.5-0-0.5 msec 4000-Hz Blackman-gated toneburst was used to investigate whether the difference in rise/fall characteristics of the linearly and Blackman-gated tonebursts could account for any differences in ABR results at 4000 Hz. The ABR toneburst stimuli were calibrated behaviorally in 15 adults with normal hearing. Results In the normal-hearing listeners toneburst-ABR thresholds generally exceeded behavioral thresholds by 10 to 13 dB for all stimuli. Correlations of 0.85 to 0.96 were obtained between 2000 and 4000 Hz toneburst ABR thresholds and pure-tone audiometric thresholds in the hearing-impaired listeners. Results were similar for Blackman- and linearly gated stimuli. Conclusions There were no clear differences between Blackman- and linearly gated tonebursts in terms of how well ABR thresholds predicted pure-tone thresholds at 2000 and 4000 Hz. In general audiometric thresholds were predicted with good accuracy (±15 dB) by the toneburst ABR thresholds. The 4000-Hz audiometric threshold was underestimated in one subject with a very steeply sloping hearing loss by both Blackman- and linearly gated toneburst ABR thresholds, indicating that ipsilateral masking such as notched noise would be needed to ensure frequency specificity in this and similar cases.

This study examines the usefulness of the upward chirp stimulus developed by Dau et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 107, 1530-1540 (2000)] for retrieving frequency-specific information. The chirp was designed to produce simultaneous displacement maxima along the cochlear partition by compensating for frequency-dependent traveling-time differences. In the first experiment, auditory brainstem responses (ABR) elicited by the click and the broadband chirp were obtained in the presence of high-pass masking noise, with cutoff frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz. Results revealed a larger wave-V amplitude for chirp than for click stimulation in all masking conditions. Wave-V amplitude for the chirp increased continuously with increasing high-pass cutoff frequency while it remains nearly constant for the click for cutoff frequencies greater than 1 kHz. The same two stimuli were tested in the presence of a notched-noise masker with one-octave wide spectral notches corresponding to the cutoff frequencies used in the first experiment. The recordings were compared with derived responses, calculated offline, from the high-pass masking conditions. No significant difference in response amplitude between click and chirp stimulation was found for the notched-noise responses as well as for the derived responses. In the second experiment, responses were obtained using narrow-band stimuli. A low-frequency chirp and a 250-Hz tone pulse with comparable duration and magnitude spectrum were used as stimuli. The narrow-band chirp elicited a larger response amplitude than the tone pulse at low and medium stimulation levels. Overall, the results of the present study further demonstrate the importance of considering peripheral processing for the formation of ABR. The chirp might be of particular interest for assessing low-frequency information.

In order to test the frequency specificity of the efferent suppressive effect on otoacoustic emissions, changes in the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) levels induced by contralateral stimuli of different spectra were measured in 10 normally hearing adults. Three types of contralateral stimuli were used: (i) a set of 6 pairs of pure tones with the same frequencies as used for DPOAE stimulation; (ii) 6 narrow-band noise signals with cut-off frequencies equal to the frequencies of the primary tones used for DPOAE stimulation; and (iii) broad-band noise with a bandwidth of 840-6,000 Hz. A small suppressive effect was observed mainly in the mid-frequency region. Broad-band noise was more effective at suppressing DPOAEs than narrow-band noises and two-tone complexes. Occasionally, small enhancements in DPOAE amplitudes were observed. Based on the results of this study, it is concluded that DPOAE changes induced by contralateral stimuli are not frequency-specific, and are too small to have routine clinical value.

For intraoperative monitoring of auditory nerve function, the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) analysis may be an alternative to brain stem auditory evoked potentials, offering frequency specificity and short detection times. Clinical studies investigating the viability of ASSR under total intravenous anesthesia have not been performed.During craniotomy under total intravenous anesthesia with propofol and remifentanil in 20 patients, ASSR were recorded. An additional control patient undergoing cerebellopontine angle surgery was included, in whom the auditory nerve could not be preserved. One-minute sinus tones (500, 1,000, 2,000 Hz) were applied with 60-, 70-, and 80-decibel hearing level. Stimuli were amplitude modulated with 40, 90, or 110 Hz and applied monaurally to the left and right ears. Time to detect a significant response and response amplitudes at 40, 90, or 110 Hz in the evoked EEG spectra was evaluated.Overall, 90-Hz ASSR were successfully detected in all 20 patients, 110 Hz in 18 patients, and 40 Hz in 14 patients after a median of 10 seconds. No ASSR could be detected in the control patient at the end of the surgical procedure. Time-to-significance and ASSR amplitudes were influenced by stimulus intensity, carrier, and modulation frequency (Scheirer-Ray-Hare test, P0.005). Ipsilateral responses were higher than contralateral (P0.0001).In conclusion, 90- and 110-Hz ASSR can be reliably detected under total intravenous anesthesia. Our results are in line with those from previous studies in awake patients. Auditory steady-state response during anesthesia may enable intraoperative frequency-specific audiometry and monitoring of the auditory nerve.

Whether click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) have frequency specificity is an issue still subject to debate. In order to resolve this issue, changes in the frequency components of the CEOAE power spectrum, together with changes in compound action potential (CAP) thresholds before and after pure-tone exposure in guinea pigs, were examined. Changes in CAP thresholds immediately before and 1 h after exposure were compared with changes in the frequency components in the CEOAE power spectrum before and 1 h after exposure. The ILO 88 was used for measurement of CEOAEs. Total echo energy in the CEOAE power spectrum was converted into frequency bands of 1000 Hz. Shifts in filtered echo power (FEP) levels correlated maximally with those in CAP thresholds at 0.5 kHz above the same frequency. Stepwise regression indicated that only one step could be entered in a linear regression model using the variable of CAP threshold shifts at 0.5 kHz above the same frequency for all FEP shifts except FEP4.5. The remaining variables played a negligible role, since variance no longer changed when they were included in the regression equation. From these results, it was concluded that CEOAEs display frequency specificity. Influence on CEOAEs from higher frequencies is negligible.

Transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOE) disappear when hearing loss exceeds 40 dB in the range 1-4 kHz, due to impairment of cochlear outer hair cells. Early screening of sensorineural hearing losses is based on this finding. However, little is known as to the frequency specificity of TEOE abnormalities in a damaged cochlea. TEOE were recorded in 18 normally hearing guinea pigs in a range from 1.5 to 5 kHz before and after exposure to loud pure tones (3-10 kHz, 95-105 dB SPL, 1-10 min). The thresholds of eighth-nerve compound action potentials (CAP) were monitored with a round-window electrode; it was confirmed that acoustic overexposure resulted in typical high-frequency threshold elevations (10 to 50 dB). Most TEOE components were found at lower frequencies at which CAP thresholds did not change. However, a significant linear regression was found between their amplitudes and the percentage of basal cochlea with unaltered CAP thresholds (r = 0.69, p0.0001). Two alternative hypotheses are proposed to account for this correlation. Either acoustic trauma induced some minute cochlear damage at places tuned to low frequencies and TEOE were more sensitive to it than CAP thresholds, or significant contributions to lower-frequency TEOE came from the most damaged cochlear places tuned to much higher frequencies.

The influence of contralateral auditory stimulation on otoacoustic emissions (OAE), spontaneous OAE, evoked OAE and acoustic distortion products, can be summarized as follows: (1) alteration (mainly a decrease) of OAE amplitude; (2) alteration of response spectrum (upward shift frequency of SOAE); (3) alteration of phase; (4) effect dependent on intensity of contralateral stimulation; (5) effect inversely dependent on intensity of ipsilateral stimulation; (6) frequency specificity of the suppressive effect. Involvement of the medial olivocochlear bundle is highly probable but one cannot exclude a double pathway including also the acoustic reflex.

The frequency characteristics of the suppression by contralateral stimulations, of the cubic 2 f 1 − f 2 distortion products (DPOAEs), were studied during 63 sessions performed in 39 humans with normal hearing. Each session consisted of exposure to five successive series of randomized contralateral NBN frequencies centered between 0.25 and 8 kHz, while measuring 2 f 1 − f 2 set at one of the four studied frequencies, i.e., 1, 2, 3 or 5 kHz. For each value of 2 f 1 − f 2 , analysis of variance and Student's t -test were used in order to indicate and, if necessary, to localize, a possible significant frequency specificity. Results showed that the suppression exerted on 2 f 1 − f 2 DPOAEs by contralateral sound stimulation, is frequency specific, at least for middle frequencies of 1 and 2 kHz. The frequency specificity is specially marked when 2 f 1 − f 2 = 1 kHz with contralateral NBN central frequencies around 1 kHz. When 2 f 1 − f 2 = 2 kHz, central frequencies which induced a significant suppressive effect include frequencies around 2 kHz and also lower frequencies around 1 kHz. These observations support the interpretation that the suppression of the DPOAE is mediated by the medial olivo-cochlear efferent system.

The influence of noise bandwidth on the contralateral masking of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions was investigated by recording emissions from 20 normal subjects with contralateral narrow-band noise, with wide-band noise and without contralateral noise for comparison. Narrow-band noise of five different centre frequencies and three different bandwidths per frequency was used at intensities of 40 and 60 dB SL. Analysis of the emissions showed that the 40-dB SL contralateral noise did not produce a significant amount of suppression. The suppression produced by 60-dB SL noise was spread throughout the frequency range of the emissions, with limited frequency specificity. There was some evidence that the amount of suppression increases with the bandwidth of the noise, particularly for noises centred on 1 and 2 kHz; the wide-band noise produced much greater suppression than any of the narrow bands. There was a large amount of inter-subject variation, which could not be explained by differences in the absolute level of the emissions. One subject with a total unilateral hearing loss in the contralateral ear was also tested, and gave no significant suppression.

To investigate the frequency specificity of steady-state responses elicited with a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated tone (amplitude-modulation-following response, AMFR), AMFR at different carrier frequencies were examined in 15 subjects with normal hearing, 12 patients with abrupt high-frequency hearing loss, 5 patients with low-frequency hearing loss and 1 patient with mid-frequency hearing loss. The stimulus was a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated tone with a modulation frequency of 40 Hz and modulation depth of 95%. Carrier frequencies were from 250 to 4000 Hz in normal subjects and from 250 to 8,000 Hz in hearing-impaired subjects. Fridman's phase spectral analysis was conducted for automatic detection of response. The thresholds of AMFR were distributed within 30 dB nHL at all carrier frequencies in normal subjects. In the hearing-impaired subjects, AMFR thresholds were between 0 and 25 dB above the behavioral threshold at all carrier frequencies. The threshold patterns of AMFR detected by phase spectral analysis very closely resembled the corresponding audiogram patterns in all types of hearing impairment. AMFR is thus shown to have a very good frequency specificity.

The onset and frequency-following response (FFR) components of the auditory brain stem response were investigated using a tone on tone forward-masking paradigm, as an alternate strategy to simultaneous masking, in an effort to further clarify the issue of place specificity of these components when elicited by a low-frequency stimulus (500 Hz tone burst). The results of this preliminary investigation suggest that both the onset and FFR components yield frequency-specific information, that is, they reflect activity along a limited apicalward region of the cochlea, but both are biased somewhat basalward to the place of the probe frequency. Also, of the two, the FFR is the relatively more place-specific response.

This study examined the neural basis of auditory selective attention using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The main hypothesis stated that attending to a particular sound frequency would significantly enhance the neural response within those tonotopic regions of the auditory cortex sensitive to that frequency. To test this prediction, low- and high-frequency sound sequences were interleaved to produce two concurrent auditory streams. Six normally hearing participants either performed a task which required them to attend to one or the other stream or listened passively to the sounds while functional images were acquired using a high-resolution (1.5 mm × 1.5 mm × 2.5 mm) sequence. Two statistical comparisons identified the attention-specific and general effects of enhancement. The first controlled for task-related processes, while the second did not. Results demonstrated frequency-specific, attention-specific enhancement in the response to the attended frequency, but no response suppression for the unattended frequency. Instead, a general effect of suppression was found in several posterior sites, possibly related to resting-state processes. Furthermore, there was widespread general enhancement across auditory cortex when performing the task compared to passive listening. This enhancement did include frequency-sensitive regions, but was not restricted to them. In conclusion, our results show partial support for frequency-specific enhancement. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. In normal-hearing subjects and in subjects with a flat cochlear hearing loss, auditory brainstem responses (ABR) were recorded at various levels of a 1,000-Hz filtered click stimulus with and without high-pass filtered masking noise. The difference in latency of the major peak in the ABR for the masked and unmasked condition was zero at the ABR threshold. We regard this as proof of the frequency specificity of the 1,000-Hz filtered click-stimulated ABR threshold. The difference between ABR threshold and the subjective puretone threshold at 1,000 Hz amounted to 19 dB in normal-hearing subjects and to 10 dB in subjects with a flat cochlear hearing loss. This is probably related to loss of temporal integration and an abnormal loudness growth (recruitment).

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are thought to stem from the outer hair cells (OHCs) around the normally narrow place tuned to the primary tone stimuli. They are thus said to be frequency-specific: their local absence should accurately pinpoint local OHC damage. Yet the influence of impaired tuning on DPOAE frequency specificity is poorly documented. Mice with local damage to OHCs were examined. Their DPOAEs were frequency-specific in that audiometric notches were accurately tracked. The same cochleae were further impaired by ischemia or furosemide injection inducing strial dysfunction with flat loss of sensitivity and tuning, while the preexisting pattern of damaged OHCs remained unaltered. Despite the loss of cochlear activity, DPOAEs produced by high-level (or =70 dB SPL) primaries remained large in about the same interval where they had been initially normal, i.e., that with nondamaged OHCs, albeit with a slight frequency shift, of -1.1 kHz on average. Thus, the ability of DPOAEs to map structurally intact OHCs cannot be a mere consequence of cochlear tuning as it largely persists in its absence. The key element for this correct mapping is likely part of intact OHC structures (e.g., stereocilia bundles) and must have some tuning of its own.

The effect of frequency on N1m has been investigated by various methods. However, it has not yet been measured using forward masking. In this study, the frequency specificity of N1m was investigated using forward masking. Although the masker frequency had some influence on N1m amplitudes, the results suggested that the frequency specificity of N1m was worse than that of a single-neuron or psychological tuning curve. This is probably because N1m includes various components, both frequency-specific and non-specific, some of which may be less affected by masking. Thus, our results agree with those of previous studies using intervening tones that suggested widespread neural representation in the auditory cortex.

Two experiments examined the frequency specificity of habituation of the acoustic startle response in the rat. Following the long-term habituation of startle to one of two pure tone stimuli in Experiment 1, animals were presented with the other stimulus. Startle response asymptotes were unaffected by this change in stimulus frequency. Short-term habituation of startle also was insensitive to stimulus frequency. In Experiment 2, pure tone stimuli were used to provoke both a startle response and the interruption of drinking. Long-term habituation of startle to either stimulus was unaffected by a change in frequency. Animals that received the two stimuli on alternating days showed as rapid a habituation as did the groups receiving only one stimulus frequency during acquisition. Conversely, the lick suppression measure was found to be frequency specific. Lick suppression durations rose to pre-habituation levels when the frequency of the stimulus was changed. Animals that received the two stimuli on alternating days showed retarded habituation compared to those groups presented with only one stimulus frequency during acquisition. Although long-term habituation of startle is not stimulus specific, it is mediated by central processes and thus remains a valuable model in the study of neurophysiological mechanisms of behavioral change.

This study investigated the frequency specificity of the auditory brainstem (ABR) and middle latency (MLR) responses to 500- and 2000-Hz brief tones using high-pass noise masking. Stimuli were linear- (2-1-2 cycles) and exact-Blackman- (5 cycles) gated tones presented at 80 dB peak-to-peak equivalent (ppe) SPL. Cochlear contributions to ABR wave V-V' and MLR wave Na-Pa were assessed by the effects of high-pass noise masking on response amplitudes and latencies. The high-pass noise results demonstrate that the ABR and the MLR to the 80 dB ppe SPL brief tones show good frequency and place specificity. Changes in ABR or MLR amplitude and latency with high-pass noise masking did not occur as the masker cutoff was decreased from 2 to 3 octaves above the stimulus nominal frequency until it was within one-half octave of this frequency, below which amplitudes rapidly decreased (500- and 2000-Hz tones) and latencies increased (500-Hz tones). No significant differences existed in the frequency specificity of the ABR versus MLR, or in these evoked potentials to exact-Blackman- versus linear-gated tones.

This study investigated the frequency specificity of the auditory brainstem (ABR) and middle latency (MLR) responses to 500- and 2000-Hz brief tones using narrow-band derived response analyses of the responses recorded in high-pass masking noise [Oates and Stapells, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 3597-3608 (1997)]. Stimuli were linear- and exact-Blackman-gated tones presented at 80 dB ppe SPI. Cochlear contributions to ABR wave V-V' and MLR wave Na-Pa were assessed by response amplitude profiles as a function of derived band center frequency. The largest amplitudes of waves V and Na-Pa occurred in the 500- and 707-Hz derived bands in response to the exact-Blackman- and linear-gated 500-Hz tones. The peak in the response amplitude profiles for wave V to both 2000-Hz stimuli was seen in the 2000-Hz derived band. For wave Na-Pa, the maxima in the amplitude profiles occurred in the 2000- and 1410-Hz derived bands for the exact-Blackman- and linear-gated tones. Smaller cochlear contributions to the ABR/MLR were also present at 0.5-1 octave above and below the nominal stimulus frequencies. The ABR/MLR to 500- and 2000-Hz 80 dB ppe SPL tones thus shows good frequency specificity, with no significant differences in the frequency specificity of: (1) ABR versus MLR; (2) these evoked potentials to 500-versus 2000-Hz tones; and (3) responses to exact-Blackman- versus linear-gated tones.

This study investigated the effects of signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) on the latency and amplitude of the auditory brainstem response (Wave V) using 1 and 4 kHz tone bursts in notch noise and broadband noise. Normal listeners were presented with 40 dB and 80 dB nHL tone bursts in quiet and in noise at S/Ns of 10, 15, 20, and 25 dB. The latency data suggest that at low intensity levels tone bursts in quiet may be preferred to testing in noise. At moderate and high intensities, however, notch noise or broadband noise is preferred to the quiet condition because of the improved frequency specificity provided by the masking. When testing patients with flat or gradually sloping audiometric configurations at moderate to high intensities with 4 kHz, either notch noise or broadband noise with an S/N of 15 to 25 dB may be used. When presenting 1 kHz tone bursts at high intensities to patients having flat and gradually sloping losses, a notch noise at S/Ns of 10 to 25 dB is preferred to broadband noise. The use of a notch noise at 10 dB S/N may be the stimulus of choice when testing patients with moderately to steeply sloping audiometric configurations with 1 or 4 kHz tone bursts.

In this study, the frequency specificity of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) threshold to a click masked with 1590-Hz high-pass masking noise is compared with the frequency specificity of the unmasked click-evoked ABR threshold. The ABR threshold to the high-pass-noise-masked click stimulus is low frequency specific and corresponds with the 1,000-Hz pure-tone threshold. Although the ABR threshold to the unmasked click stimulus corresponds with the '3,000'-Hz pure-tone threshold, the frequency specificity seems much less pronounced than that of the low-frequency-specific stimulus. This study shows, however, that this apparent lack of frequency specificity can be attributed to the selection of pure-tone hearing losses. The ABR threshold evoked by an unmasked click stimulus is, therefore, preeminently useful as a high-frequency point of a two-point audiogram. The possible reasons why the ABR threshold evoked by a broad-band stimulus as the unmasked click corresponds with the higher frequencies of the pure-tone audiogram are discussed.

The amplitude modulation-following response (AMFR) is an auditory scalp-recorded potential, evoked using continuous, amplitude-modulated tones. The current study was designed to explore the audiometric utility of the AMFR by demonstrating the frequency specificity of the response and assessing the relation between behaviorally measured pure-tone thresholds and AMFR detection thresholds. Subjects in this study were six normal-hearing and four hearing-impaired adults. High-pass masking results in the normal hearing subjects demonstrated that the AMFR is associated with a narrow range of activation along the cochlea around the carrier frequency. Frequency-specific results from the hearing-impaired subjects confirmed this finding. Thresholds for the AMFR, defined in spectral terms, were consistent with the behavioral estimates in both the normal and the hearing-impaired subjects.

The auditory fields in the cortex of the guinea pig were investigated with microelectrode mapping techniques. Pure tones of varying frequencies and amplitudes were used as acoustic stimuli. Mainly, multiunit activity was recorded. A large tonotopic area is found in the anterior half of the auditory cortex. This area is named the anterior field (field A). Frequency tuning curves of multiunits in field A are generally narrow. Responses to tone stimuli are strong, and latencies are short. Low best frequencies are represented rostrally, high best frequencies caudally. The tonotopy is continuous and quite regular. Field A is narrow dorsally and becomes gradually broader ventrally. Correspondingly, the isofrequency lines slightly diverge from dorsal to ventral. Caudal to the first field, there is a second, smaller tonotopic area. It lies in the dorsal half of the posterior auditory cortex and is therefore named the dorsocaudal field (field DC). The frequency specificity of the cell clusters in this area is as strong as in field A, but the tonotopy is discontinuous: In the dorsal half of field DC, high best frequencies (16-32 kHz) are represented rostrally; the low frequencies (0.5-2.8 kHz) are represented immediately caudal to the high frequencies, while the intermediate frequencies are missing. Ventrally in field DC, the frequency representation is more complete. Except for this discontinuous map, we did not notice any differences between fields A and DC. A third tonotopic field was found rostral to field A. This field extends over a surface of less than 1 mm2 and was named the small field (field S). It contains a complete representation of the frequency range; high best frequencies are located rostrally, low frequencies caudally. The response latencies are slightly longer in field S than in fields A or DC, and the tuning curves are broader. A broad strip of nontonotopic cortex (auditory belt) surrounds fields A and DC caudally. We subdivided this area into the dorsocaudal and the ventrocaudal belt region. In both areas, tuning curves are often broad, and response latencies are longer than in the tonotopic cortex. In the dorsocaudal belt, most multiunits react with a phasic on-response to pure tones; in the ventrocaudal belt, tonic responses occur more frequently. Another nontonotopic region is located in the anterior auditory cortex, rostral to the tonotopic fields, and was therefore named the rostral belt. Tuning curves in this area are broad, latencies are short, and reponse thresholds are often high. In the discussion, the guinea pig is compared with other mammalian species. Species-specific features in the organization of the tonotopic cortex of the guinea pig are revealed.

The frequency specificity of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was examined by means of pure-tone masking profiles using click, 4000-Hz, and 1000-Hz filtered-click stimuli. Simultaneous pure-tone maskers were presented at one-half octave intervals around stimulus center frequency. Masking profiles at two intensities (60 and 40 dB SL) were obtained by measuring both latency and amplitude shifts in wave V as a result of the discrete-frequency maskers. Both latency and amplitude analyses showed masking profiles at 40 dB SL that were narrow and centered around stimulus frequency, whereas profiles at 60 dB SL showed high-frequency spread of the cochlear excitation area.

Auditory evoked potentials are nearly all on-effects and the 'effective stimuli' for them are necessarily brief. Their frequency specificity is therefore limited, especially for the brainstem responses, because of the well-known trade-off between duration and frequency specificity. Brainstem responses are of special interest because they are unchanged in the sleep-like sedation that is required for difficult-to-test children. The middle-latency responses do not meet this requirement. Two patterns of tone burst that are appropriate and promising for the slow cortical potentials and for brainstem potentials, respectively, have rise and fall times of 2 periods of the modulated tone and plateaus of 10 (or 7) periods and 1 period, respectively. Their behavioral thresholds are nearly insensitive to difference in repetition rate between 4 and 40 stimuli/s. Their peak equivalent SPL threshold values at 500, 1 000, 2 000 and 4 000 Hz have been determined for 16 otologically normal ears. Using these reference levels, audiograms have been obtained for subjects with impaired hearing. The audiograms for 'flat' hearing losses do not differ significantly from the corresponding conventional pure-tone audiograms. The slopes for steep high-frequency hearing losses are underestimated, however, particularly with the brief (2-1-2) pattern. Nevertheless, the 2-1-2 pattern appears to be close to the best possible compromise.

The auditory sustained potential recorded from the human scalp increases in amplitude with increasing stimulus intensity. At rapid rates of stimulus presentation its amplitude decreases but proportionately less so than the amplitude of the transient onset auditory evoked potential. The frequency specificity of this rate effect is complex, suggesting that there may be two underlying components of the scalp-recorded auditory sustained potential. The amplitude of the auditory sustained potential is smaller when the tonal frequency of the stimulus is higher. With prolonged stimulus durations there is some adaptation of the amplitude of the auditory sustained potential. This potential is larger in amplitude when sounds are presented binaurally than monaurally, and has a symmetrical coronal scalp distribution that is unaffected by the ear of stimulation.

The topographic arrangement and frequency sensitivity of units were studied in the inferior colliculus of urethane anaesthetized rabbits. Units in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus were organized tonotopically, with neurones of low best frequency located dorsally and high best frequency ventrally in this structure. Units in the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus tended to be broadly tuned but the frequently observed habituative behaviour of these units often made the determination of tuning curves difficult in this region. In the central nucleus, tuning curves of low frequency elements were broader than those of high frequency units. Auditory activity was also observed in a small sample of units in the intermediate and deep layers of the superior colliculus. These results were discussed in relation to the neuronal architecture of the inferior colliculus and to the diversity of the sources of afferent endings in this structure. Units in the external nucleus would appear to have a different role to those in the central nucleus in the neural processes of hearing.

Two experiments were designed to ascertain whether the auditory evoked response in man reflects a tonotopic organization of the auditory cortex. In Experiment I, the evoked response (N 1 P 2 component) registered between vertex and earlobe, was measured when either 375,1000 or 8000 c/sec were presented simultaneously with 250 c/sec and when each tonal frequency was presented alone. In Experiment II, an 8000 c/sec tone intervened between successive presentations of a 250 c/sec tone. The question asked was whether the intervening 8000 c/sec tone would reduce the size of the response to the 250 c/sec tone. The results of Experiment I showed that for simultaneously presented tones the size of the evoked response increased progressively as the two tones became further removed from one another in frequency, and the size of the response amplitude evoked by the two tones which differed most in frequency (250–8000 c/sec) approached the sum of the response amplitudes evoked by each tone when delivered singly. In Experiment II, where tones were delivered sequentially, 8000 c/sec reduced the response to 250 c/sec when both tones were presented to the same ear. If, however, 8000 c/sec were given to the right ear and 250 c/sec to the left ear, no evidence for interaction between the two stimuli was apparent. Assuming that the N 1 P 2 component of the auditory evoked response can serve validly as an index of auditory cortex activity, the data support the notion that the auditory cortex is organized tonotopically but that each tonal frequency has widespread neural representation.

Simultaneous recordings from the auditory cortex and the cerebellar foliumtuber vermis of anesthetized and unanesthetized cats were obtained in response to pure-tone autitory stimuli. The auditory and cerebellar cortices both reflected frequency specificity in the awake animal. Changes in the orientation of awake animals to the sound source indicated that the cerebellar evoked potentials were highly sensitive to the directionality of the sound. Nembutal produced complete suppression of the cerebellar evoked potentials and enhancement (at higher stimulus intensities) of the auditory responses. Data indicate that the cerebellar vermis may play a major role in orienting the organism to the sound source by discriminating intensity differences between the two ears.

The pure-tone masking technique has been employed to determine the contributions of neural activity from different cochlear regions to the click-evoked auditory brain stem response (compound ABR). ABR to broad-band clicks were recorded without and with simultaneous presentation of pure tones of frequencies ranging from 8 to 0.5 kHz. Derived ABRs for individual frequency bands were obtained by subtracting the masked responses from the unmasked ones. To determine the contributions to the compound ABR, masked and derived ABRs were compared with unmasked responses. The frequency specificity of the contributions was more distinct at lower rather than at higher stimulus intensities. Independent of stimulus intensity, the 8- to 2-kHz regions turned out to be the main sources of waves I-V in the compound ABR, whereas waves VI and VII seem to be predominantly generated by contributions from regions specific for 1 and 0.5 kHz. The main advantage of the pure-tone masking technique as compared with the tone pip stimulation is that contributions from the low-frequency regions become more clearly detectable. The validity of this technique has been proved by comparing the compound ABR with the sum of the derived ABRs. The comparison of ABRs derived by pure-tone masking with those derived by conventional high-pass noise masking did prove the validity of the technique as well.

Auditory brain stem responses were elicited by unfiltered clicks as well as 500-Hz and 1000-Hz tone-pips with and without high-pass noise masking, from normal hearing subjects and from patients with high-frequency hearing losses. The responses elicited by tone-pips were similar in configuration to the familiar click-evoked responses. When presented in quiet, the latencies of responses elicited by tone-pips (i.e. wave V latency) were identical, or close to those evoked by clicks, suggesting common origins on the basilar membrane. With the addition of high-pass filtered white noise mixed with the tone-pips, wave V latency shifted, suggesting responses originating from apical low-frequency regions. This procedure yielded a good approximation of audiograms obtained from the same subjects. The unfiltered clicks inferred hearing sensitivity in the 2000 to 4000 Hz range, the masked tone-pips closely reproduced thresholds at 500 Hz and 1000 Hz.

Brain stem responses were obtained from eight young adult listeners with normal hearing. These potentials were evoked using three stimuli: a click, a 500 Hz, tone pip with a 2.5 ms. rise time, and a 500 Hz. tone pip with a 5.0 ms. rise time. Each stimulus was presented in quiet and in the presence of three high pass noises and one low pass noise. No significant difference in the latency-intensity function was obtained for the click between the quiet and the low pass noise conditions. There was, however, a significant prolongation of the latency in the presence of high pass noise. The latency of the brain stem response to the 500 Hz. tone pip was essentially unaffected by the high pass noise except for the 1200 Hz. high pass noise condition. These data indicated that for the tone pips a more basal region of the basilar membrane would be involved at high intensity stimulus levels. This involvement of basal regions, however, would not extend beyond the region responsive to a 2400 Hz. stimulus. The threshold for the click was significantly elevated in the high pass noise conditions but not in the low pass noise condition. The threshold of the 500 Hz. tone pip was significantly higher than that of the click in quiet and in the presence of noise.

This study was designed to explore the possibility of using facilitation of the acoustic reflex to determine peripheral frequency selectivity. Changes in reflex magnitude in response to a 2000-Hz tone burst presented at 5 dB above reflex threshold were measured as a function of the frequency and level of a facilitating stimulus presented in a nonsimultaneous paradigm. 3 normally-hearing adults served as subjects. Results reveal that acoustic reflex facilitation does not appear to be a frequency-dependent phenomenon thus suggesting that the tonotopic organization of the cochlea is not preserved at the site of reflex facilitation.

Auditory brainstem responses evoked by both clicks and 0.5 kHz tone-bursts were recorded using the derived-band parad gm in 10 normal-hearing subjects. The derived-band analyses showed a similar distribution of activity with both stimuli, the largest contributions coming from the 2–4 and 4–8 kHz bands. Neither the click nor the 0.5 kHz tone-hurst is a frequency-specific stimulus, and both woulc appear to be unsuitable for brainstem response audiometric evaluation of the apical cochlea.

Human electrocochleography is reviewed and the significance of the recorded potentials is discussed with special reference to the recording site. The response amplitude and threshold values for transtympanic AP recording are compared for various recording sites. The recorded AP amplitude varies with the inverse distance to the cochlear wall, resulting in an AP threshold increase which is nearly exponential with increasing distance from the cochlea.The click and tone-burst results arc compared with respect to frequency specificity and accordance with the subjective threshold. The Leiden method combining the promontory recording with short tone-bursts as stimuli proved to permit accurate determination of threshold for frequencies of 500 Hz and upwards, and provides detailed frequency-specific supraliminal information (e.g. about recruitment).

The apparatus developed in our department for electrocochleography is described. The principle of enhancement of a weak biological signal from background noise by an average response computer is elucidated, with indication of the limitations. The frequency content of the effective tone-burst sound stimulus was calculated to estimate the frequency specificity of the stimulus.A description is also given of the signal switching circuitry used to make separate recordings of CM and AP simultaneously. Some details are given of a circuit permitting rapid determination of AP threshold values and input-output curves with tone-bursts.Because the apparatus was developed to be applicable for experimental work and for auditory evoked response audiometry, several special features were incorporated. A circuit for accurate measurement of latency, a double-synchronized tone-burst generator, and a dB-linear intensity ramp with I’M bursts are briefly described.A flexible trigger generator provides many trigger modes...
