Account book created in Greenbrier County, near Lewisburg on the turnpike, during 1839-1840. It documents transactions for general merchandise, and for services provided inn and tavern customers. Some of the names appearing include William Colwell & Co., William Dixon, Isaac Hapinstall, Jack Hapinstall, James Hapinstall, E. Meeks, Doct. Moorman, Joseph Perry, Daniel Reynolds, Mrs. Thwacker, and Rich. Sammons. Many of the persons recorded in the book lived near Edward M. Brown who was a merchant, so the book probably belonged to him.

The collection contains record books and papers covering a period from the formation of the county of Monongalia in 1776 to 1933. The collection is broken prior to 1796. There are approximately six hundred thousand pieces including papers on civil and criminal cases, bonds, deeds, wills, licenses, settlements of public offices, school reports, and other papers commonly filled or recorded at county courthouses in the Virginias. There are two hundred and seventy-five volumes covering a period from 1781 to 1933 and embracing the record books of District Courts, Superior Courts of Law, Circuit 1 Superior Courts of Law and Chancery, Circuit Courts, County Courts, Justices of the Peace, and various books of record of the several county offices. One ledger of a general merchandise store, 'Lantz Store' in Blacksville, West Virginia, documenting disbursements and customers accounts for May 29, 1861 through August 13, 1866. Transactions are recorded chronologically. Includes transaction dates, costs per item, and descriptions of items purchased or work completed. Some of the more common transactions include altering colts, building fences, sheep washing, and the sale of butter, coffee, gingham, molasses, rice, and tobacco, among others.
