In this paper we elaborate on the nature and challenges for the magnet systems of a muon collider as presently considered within the scope of the International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC). We outline the structure of the work proposed over the coming period of five years to study and demonstrate relevant magnet technology. The proposal, which is part of the overall work planned to establish feasibility of a muon collider, is in direct response to the recent recommendations received from the Laboratories Directors Group (LDG). The plan is to profit from joint activities, within the scope of the IMCC and beyond, implemented through direct and EU-funded contributions., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Muon colliders provide a unique route to deliver high energy collisions that enable discovery searches and precision measurements to extend our understanding of the fundamental laws of physics. The muon collider design aims to deliver physics reach at the highest energies with costs, power consumption and on a time scale that may prove favorable relative to other proposed facilities. In this context, a new international collaboration has formed to further extend the design concepts and performance studies of such a machine. This effort is focused on delivering the elements of a $\sim$10 TeV center of mass (CM) energy design to explore the physics energy frontier. The path to such a machine may pass through lower energy options. Currently a 3 TeV CM stage is considered. Other energy stages could also be explored, e.g. an s-channel Higgs Factory operating at 125 GeV CM. The Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. Its goal is to push the field to the next energy frontier beyond LHC, increasing by an order of magnitude the mass of particles that could be directly produced, and decreasing by an order of magnitude the subatomic distances to be studied. The FCC study covers two accelerators, namely, an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh) and a highest luminosity, high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee). Both rings are hosted in the same 100 km tunnel infrastructure, replicating the CERN strategy for LEP and LHC, i.e. developing a lepton and a hadron ring sharing the same tunnel. This paper is devoted to the FCC-hh and summarizes the key features of the FCC-hh accelerator design, performance reach, and underlying technologies. The material presented in this paper builds on the conceptual design report published in 2019, and extends it, including also the progress made and the results achieved since then., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

In summer 2021, the Future Circular Collider Feasibility Study was launched. The FCC-ee builds on 60 years of operating colliding beam storage rings. The design is robust and will provide high luminosity over the desired centre-of-mass energy range from 90 to 365 GeV. The FCC-ee is also the most sustainable of all Higgs and electroweak factory proposals, in that it implies the lowest energy consumption for a given value of total integrated luminosity. In the following we present more details, describe additional R&D elements, and identify links and overlaps with the Accelerator R&D roadmap.

Klein (ERL); The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders. The goal of the roadmap is to document the collective view of the field on the next steps for the R&D programme, and to provide the evidence base to support subsequent decisions on prioritisation, resourcing and implementation.

Bent silicon crystals mounted on high-accuracy angular actuators were installed in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and extensively tested to assess the feasibility of crystal-assisted collimation in circular hadron colliders. The adopted layout was exploited and regularly upgraded for about a decade by the UA9 Collaboration. The investigations provided the compelling evidence of a strong reduction of beam losses induced by nuclear inelastic interactions in the aligned crystals in comparison with amorphous orientation. A conceptually similar device, installed in the betatron cleaning insertion of CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), was operated through the complete acceleration and storage cycle and demonstrated a large reduction of the background leaking from the collimation region and radiated into the cold sections of the accelerator and the experimental detectors. The implemented layout and the relevant results of the beam tests performed in the SPS and in the LHC with stored proton and ion beams are extensively discussed.

The worldwide High Energy Physics community widely agrees that the next collider should be a Higgs factory. Acknowledging this priority, in 2021 CERN has launched the international Future Circular Collider (FCC) Feasibility Study (FS). The FCC Integrated Project foresees, in a first stage, a high-luminosity high-energy electron-positron collider, serving as Higgs, top and electroweak factory, and, in a second stage, an energy frontier hadron collider, with a centre-of-mass energy of at least 100 TeV. In this paper, we address a few key elements of the FCC-ee accelerator design, its performance reach, and underlying technologies, as requested by the Snowmass process. The Conceptual Design Report for the FCC, published in 2019, serves as our primary reference. We also summarize a few recent changes and improvements., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up anew energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 9000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its instantaneous luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design valueand the integrated luminosity (totalnumber of collisions) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complexand exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require new infrastructures(underground and on surface)and over a decade to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), relies on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11–12Tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 100 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation, all of which required several years of dedicated R&D; effort on a global international level. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the projectand is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of the HL-LHC.

In Run 1, the LHC injection absorbers (TDIs) were affected by several anomalies including structural damage of the beam screens and elastic deformations of the jaws due to heating during fills. Other issues became apparent in 2015, like excessive vacuum spikes, which gave rise to several beam dumps, as well as quality issues affecting the hBN absorber blocks. This paper briefly summarizes past observations and issues like impedance, and describes the modifications which have been implemented in LS1 and the YETS 2015/2016. In addition, the expected implications and improvements for operation in 2016 are discussed.

The LHC collimation system has undergone an important upgrade during LS1. A total of 32 collimator installations are taking place to consolidate and improve the Run 1 system. This includes 18 new collimators with embedded beam positions monitors (BPMs), additional physics debris collimators, additional passive absorbers and re-installation or displacement of existing collimators. This paper summarizes the post-LS1 collimation layout, highlighting the expected gains from each modification, and the readiness of the new collimation hardware for commissioning without and with beam. Special emphasis is devoted to the new software for the control and configuration of the BPM colli-mators. A proposal for the necessary beam conditions during collimation alignment and validation with loss maps at 6.5 TeV is also discussed, including a strategy for the machine protection aspects. A list of early machine development studies is proposed.

The status and commissioning plans of the transfer line and injection hardware are presented with focus on the injection dump and kickers. Modifications of the beam loss monitoring in the injection region, its readiness for the start-up and commissioning strategy are shown. A new interlock strategy for the injection protection elements and the injection septum is introduced. The expected transfer line stability and possibilities to improve the turnaround with optimized SPS supercycles for LHC injection are discussed.

This note describes the preliminary design and operational modes of a new LIU-SPS beam scraping system. Experimental feasibility studies are as well presented.

Over the past years, the UA9 experiment has successfully demonstrated the viability of enhancing the collimation efficiency of proton and ion beams in the SPS by means of bent crystals. An extension of UA9 to the LHC has been recently approved. The conditions imposed by the LHC operational environment, in particular the tremendous energy density of the beam, require a reliable understanding of the crystal integrity in view of potential accident scenarios such as an asynchronous beam dump. For this purpose, single pulse irradiation tests have been performed at the CERN-HiRadMat facility to examine the mechanical strength of a silicon strip crystal in case of direct beam impact. The tests were carried out using a 440 GeV proton beam of σ=0.5 mm transverse size. Individual pulse intensities reached up to 3×1013 protons, where a significant fraction is assumed to have impacted on the crystal. First visual inspections revealed no macroscopic damage to the crystal. Complementary post-irradiation tests are foreseen to assess microscopic lattice damage as well as the degradation of the channeling efficiency.

At the LHC various underground areas are partly equipped with commercial electronic devices not specifically designed to be radiation tolerant. A major concern is therefore radiation induced failures in particular due to Single Event Upsets (SEU). To ensure safe and acceptable operation of the LHC electronics a combination of both FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations and dedicated online monitoring is applied to determine the expected radiation levels in critical areas. The LHC Radiation Monitor (RadMon) which is used for this purpose has already been extensively calibrated for its radiation response in various irradiation facilities. It is nevertheless of high importance to also provide a real LHC application benchmark to validate the approach of combined simulations and montoring to correctly measure and predict radiation levels. This report therefore presents a comparison between FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations and measurements results using the RadMon in the LHC collimation region IR7. The work is carried out within the frame work of the R2E project.

This note briefly reports on the MD period dedicated to the crystal channelling experiment (UA9) installed in SPS LSS5 performed on 30 June-1 July 2009.

A number of tests were performed in the North area of the SPS in view of investigating crystal-particles interactions for future application in hadron colliders. The rate of nuclear interactions was measured with 400 GeV proton beams directed into a silicon bent crystal. In this way the background induced by the crystal either in amorphous or in channeling orientation was revealed. The results provide fundamental information to put in perspective the use of silicon crystals to assist halo collimation in hadron colliders, whilst minimizing the induced loss.

Modifications of the LHC schedule and the needed planning for future shutdowns requires an approach compatible with all operational scenarios in order to reduce the failures due to SEE around the machine. The R2E study group recommends a list of short-term actions, to plan, analyse and prepare mid/long-term activities and to assign additional resources. The aim is to maximize the use of available time slots and to allow for a coherent decision on mid/long-term actions to be taken in 2009/10. This decision might be required before measurements during early operation and ongoing radiation tests can allow for a complete analysis of the situation. It is important to note, that the detailed review and analysis of equipments and areas, as well as early measurements and continued radiation tests remain important requirements to be able to make the appropriate future decisions in the coming year(s). The aim of the following approach is to keep during the coming months as many options open as possible and have as many elements prepared and analysed as can be achieved, in order to be able to take respective mid/long-term decisions later this year. For the latter a detailed review is suggested for this autumn.

A full-scale prototype of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collimator was installed in 2004 in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and has been extensively used for beam tests, for control tests and also LHC simulation benchmarking during four years of operation. This operational experience has been extremely valuable in view of the final LHC implementation as well as for estimating the LHC operational scenarios, most notably to establish procedures for the beam-based alignment of the collimators with respect to the circulating beam. These studies were made possible by installing in the SPS a first prototype of the LHC beam loss monitoring system. The operational experience gained at the SPS and the lessons learnt for the LHC operation are presented.

Installation of the new photo-injector for the CTF3 drive beam (PHIN) has been completed on a stand-alone test bench. The photo-injector operates with a 2.5 cell RF gun at 3 GHz, using a Cs2Te photocathode illuminated by a UV laser beam. The test bench is equipped with transverse beam diagnostic as well as a 90-degree spectrometer. A grid of 100 micrometer wide slits can be inserted for emittance measurements. The laser used to trigger the photo-emission process is a Nd:YLF system consisting of an oscillator and a preamplifier operating at 1.5 GHz and two powerful amplifier stages. The infrared radiation produced is frequency quadrupled in two stages to obtain the UV. A Pockels cell allows adjusting the length of the pulse train between 50 nanoseconds and 50 microseconds. The nominal train length for CTF3 is 1.272 microseconds (1908 bunches). The first electron beam in PHIN was produced in November 2008. In this paper, results concerning the operation of the laser system and measurements performed to characterize the electron beam are presented.

The UA9 experiment intends to assess the possibility of using bent silicon crystals as primary collimators to direct coherently the beam halo onto the secondary absorber, thus reducing out-scattering, beam losses in critical regions and radiation load. The experiment will be performed in the CERN-SPS in storage mode with a 120 or 270 GeV/c proton beam. The otherwise stable beam will be perturbed to create a diffusive halo. The setup consists of four stations: the crystal station with two goniometers for crystals, two tracking stations at about 90 degrees phase advance with detectors for single particle tracking and the collimation (TAL) station with a 600 mm long tungsten absorber. The observables are the localization of the losses in the collimation area, the collimation efficiency and the shape of the deflected beam phase space. We discuss the experimental layout and the way we expect to collect data in 2009.

The 2008 collimation system of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) included 80 movable collimators for a total of 316 degrees of freedom. Before beam operation, the final controls implementation was deployed and commissioned. The control system enabled remote control and appropriate diagnostics of the relevant parameters. The collimator motion is driven with time-functions, synchronized with other accelerator systems, which allows controlling the collimator jaw positions with a micrometer accuracy during all machine phases. The machine protection functionality of the system, which also relies on function-based tolerance windows, was also fully validated. The collimator control challenges are reviewed and the final system architecture is presented. The results of the remote system commissioning and the overall performance are discussed.

A series of LHC injection tests was performed in August and September 2008. The first saw beam injected into sector 23; the second into sectors 78 and 23; the third into sectors 78-67 and sectors 23-34-45. The fourth, into sectors 23-34-45, was performed the evening before the extended injection test on the 10th September which saw both beams brought around the full circumference of the LHC. The tests enabled the testing and debugging of a number of critical control and hardware systems; testing and validation of instrumentation with beam for the first time; deployment, and validation of a number of measurement procedures. Beam based measurements revealed a number of machine configuration issues that were rapidly resolved. The tests were undoubtedly an essential precursor to the successful start of LHC beam commissioning. This paper provides an outline of preparation for the tests, the machine configuration and summarizes the measurements made and individual system performance.

The construction of a Superconducting Proton Linac is planned at CERN during the next decade. It is foreseen to be constructed in two stages: a low duty cycle, low-power linac (LPSPL) as an injector for a new 50 GeV synchrotron (PS2) replacing the present PS, which could be upgraded to a high-duty cycle, high-power linac (HPSPL), for the needs of future facility(ies) requiring a multi-MW beam power. In this paper we present the criteria which were used to choose the frequency, gradient, and cryogenic temperature of the SPL. Since these questions are common to other proposed high-power proton linacs, they may also be of use for other projects with similar specifications. The various design options are discussed as well as their impact on beam dynamics, cavity performance, power consumption, cryogenics,and overall efficiency.

In the CERN photoemission laboratory, a Cs2 Te photocathode has been produced in December 2006. The co-evaporation of Cs and Te onto a copper substrate is observed with two quartz oscillator thickness monitors. The calibration of these monitors and the resulting Cs and Te layer thicknesses are described, and the calculated stoichiometric ratio of the sample is given. The quantum efficiency of cathode No. 166, measured using the cathode in a DC gun, has been found to be 6.2%.

The LHC collimation system has been re-designed over in order to address the unprecedented challenges that are faced with the 360 MJ beams at 7 TeV. The layout of the LHC has now been frozen and a final approach for collimation and cleaning has been adopted. In total 132 pure collimator locations have been reserved in the two LHC rings and can be installed in a phased approach. Up to 88 collimators of five different types will be available for initial beam operation. The system has been fully optimized for avoiding beam-induced quenches of superconducting magnets and for sufficient survival of beamline components against radioactive dose. The phased approach for LHC collimation is described, the various collimators and their functionalities are explained, and the expected system performance is summarized.

The LHC-ACN RF system consists of eight normal conducting cavities (four per beam) made of bulk copper and resonating at 200.4 MHz. CERN provided the forged copper parts to the contractor for the final machining and assembly (Ettore Zanon S.p.A., based in Schio, Italy). The contractor had to weld all the flanges to the body of the cavity, machine and weld the cooling channels, carry out the final machining to have the right geometry and the requested RF surface finish, and make the final assembly of all the components by electron beam welding. The precision required during the various steps is quite tight with respect to the dimension of the cavities and would have required a very time-consuming and costly quality check during production, with the constant presence of a CERN staff member at the contractor's and subcontractor's premises. It was therefore decided, in the engineering phase, to foresee a tuning procedure before the final weldings to allow the same final result (precision on fundamental mode frequency) using fewer resources. This report explains the procedure for final check and tuning and gives an overview of the results achieved.

LEP couplers were a success. 288 couplers have been used for years in LEP without even one serious failure. I will briefly resume the history of the development, the problems that appeared during tests and how all these problems were solved , turning the project into a brilliant success.

One of the main problems to the designer of RF structures used in particle accelerators is to estimate their sensitivity to thermo-mechanical effects. These parameters are the basis for the choice of the tuning strategy and for the determination of the feedback architecture. We explored the possibility of using ANSYS [1] to perform such simulations in a single environment. Some examples of the most common problems of interaction between electromagnetic fields and thermo-mechanical effects are presented and, when possible, compared to measurements. Problems encountered are outlined.

Aim of this note is to give some details about the design of a 4-cell cavity beta=0.7 produced and tested at CERN. It will be shown how RF and magnetron sputtering requirements determine the final shape and the results of low power RF tests at 4.5K will be presented.

Several authors proposed the construction of superconducting proton linacs using the LEP2 cavities once LEP will be decommissioned. However only a fraction (about half) of these cavities can be used as they are for the high-energy part (b~1) of such a linac, the low energy part requiring the development of accelerating structures optimized for lower values of the particle velocity. At CERN an R&D programme on reduced-b single-cell cavities started in 1996 in order to study and explore the limits of the technology successfully used for the production of LEP2 cavities (copper cavities niobium-plated using the magnetron sputtering technique). Four different geometries were extensively investigated, each representing part of a multicell structure optimized for particles having b=0.48, b=0.625, b=0.66 and b=0.8 respectively. The results were encouraging for the last two types and therefore a new phase of R&D aimed at the production of multicell cavities for b=0.66 and b=0.8 was started. The goal is to demonstrate simultaneously the feasibility of such cavities and the possibility of producing them by low-cost modification of LEP cavities.

As part of the preparation of the PS as injector for LHC, two new 80 MHz cavities have been designed and built at CERN. Bunches spaced by 25 ns and less than 4 ns long are required at injection into t he SPS. The bunch spacing is obtained with a 40 MHz system installed in the PS in 1996, but the nominal small bunch length will only be obtained with the 80 MHz systems producing a total of 600 kV. Th ese systems also have the capability to accelerate leptons in the PS, providing a total of 400 kV with high duty cycle (25 %). The mechanical design is similar to that of the 40 MHz cavity with many c ommon parts, but cooling water circuits had to be added. The cavity is equipped with an efficient, pneumatically operated, coaxial short-circuit. The power coupling loop has the form of a wide strip t o minimize the ratio of self to mutual inductance. It has a DC insulation permitting multipactor suppression by a bias voltage. The final amplifier is mounted directly onto the cavity. A fast RF feedb ack with a loop gain of 44 dB reduces the Q to about 100. Higher-order-mode dampers designed and built at TRIUMF have been installed.

A first year of successful LHC operation has passed reaching about 50pb-1 of integrated luminosity (1‰ of nominal, 5% of 1fb-1) and more than 1% of peak luminosity, as well as a successful ion run. It is thus time having a first look on the observed radiation levels around LHC critical areas and to compare them to available simulation results. In spite of the still very low integrated intensities and cumulative luminosities, this paper summarizes the failure rate predictions by evaluating the observed radiation levels and early electronics failures, as well as the additional results from 2010 CNRAD radiation tests. Upcoming possibly in early 2011, electron cloud and scrubbing issues and their impact on radiation levels are also briefly discussed. Based on this, updated predictions for 2011 operation and beyond will be deduced, on the base of the envisaged LHC intensity, energy and luminosity reach. Starting from these estimates, priorities for short-term improvements and beam tests are presented, as well as a brief overview of upcoming ‘Radiation To Electronics (R2E)’ driven mitigation actions.

The demanding beam performance requirements of the High Luminosity (HL-) LHC project translate into a set of requirements and upgrade paths for the LHC injector complex. In this paper the performance requirements for the SPS and the known limitations are reviewed in the light of the 2012 operational experience. The various SPS upgrades in progress and still under consideration are described, in addition to the machine studies and simulations performed in 2012. The expected machine performance reach is estimated on the basis of the present knowledge, and the remaining decisions that still need to be made concerning upgrade options are detailed., Comment: 3 p. The high charge PHIN photo injector is studied at CERN as an electron source for the CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) drive beam as an alternative to the present thermionic gun. The objective of PHIN is to demonstrate the feasibility of a laser-based electron source for CLIC. The photo injector operates with a 2.5 cell, 3 GHz RF gun using a Cs2Te photocathode illuminated by UV laser pulses generated by amplifying and frequency quadrupling the signal from a Nd:YLF oscillator running at 1.5GHz. The challenge is to generate a beam structure of 1908 micro bunches with 2.33nC per micro bunch at 1.5GHz leading to a high integrated train charge of 4446nC and nominal beam energy of 5.5MeV with current stability below 1%. In this paper we report and discuss the time resolved transverse and longitudinal beam parameters measurements. The performance of the photo cathodes made at CERN with a peak quantum efficiency of 18 % is shown as well. Laser pointing and amplitude stability results are discussed taking into account correlation between laser and electron beam.
