In 2017, a collaboration between DESY, PSI and CERN was established with the aim of developing and building seven advanced X-Band Transverse Deflection Structure (TDS) with the new feature of variable polarization of the deflecting force. Seven deflectors were produced by PSI of which five were installed in three experiments at DESY, while the remaining two were installed in the ATHOS soft X-ray beamline in SwissFEL, with the goal to provide sub-fs resolution for soft X-ray pulse profiles. Early this year the X-band power source of the TDS for SwissFEL was completed and system commissioning started. This contribution summarizes the first deflection experiments performed.

The international FCC study group published in 2019 a Conceptual Design Report for an electron-positron collider with a centre-of-mass energy from 90 to 365 GeV with a beam currents of up to 1.4 A per beam. The high beam current of this collider create challenging requirements on the injection chain and all aspects of the linac need to be carefully reconsidered and revisited, including the injection time structure. The entire beam dynamics studies for the full linac, damping ring and transfer lines are major activities of the injector complex design. A key point is that any increase of positron production and capture efficiency reduces the cost and complexity of the driver linac, the heat and radiation load of the converter system, and increases the operational margin. In this paper we will give an overview of the status of the injector complex design and introduce the new layout that has been proposed by the study group working in the context of the CHART collaboration. The Hard X-ray FEL machine SwissFEL at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland is commissioned and transiting to user operation smoothly. FEL operation requires stringent requirements for the beam stability at the linac output, such as the electron bunch arrival time, peak current and beam energy. Among other things, a highly stable RF system is required to guarantee the beam stability. RF performance often dominates the overall performance and availability of FELs, and for this reason the SwissFEL RF system has been designed based on the state-of-the-art technologies that have enabled excellent RF stability, resulting in an arrival time jitter of ~10 fs rms and relative beam energy stability of 10⁻⁴ rms. The Athos line will cover the photon energy range from 250 to 1900 eV and will operate in parallel to the hard X-ray line Aramis of SwissFEL. The paper will describe the current layout of the Athos FEL line starting from the fast kicker magnet followed by the dogleg transfer line, the small linac and the 16 APPLE undulators. From there the photon beam passes through the photonics front end and the beamline optics before reaching the experimental stations AMO and FURKA. The focus of this contribution will be on the two bunch operation commissioning (two bunches in the same RF macropulse), which started in 2018, and the characterization of the major components like the APPLE X undulator UE38, the CHIC chicane and the dechirper. The prototype of the novel X-band TDS, the Polarizable X-band (PolariX) TDS, was fabricated at PSI following the high-precision tuning-free production process developed for the C-band Linac of the SwissFEL project. Bead-pull RF measurements were also performed at PSI to verify, in particular, that the polarization of the dipole fields does not have any rotation along the structure. The high-power test was performed at CERN and now the TDS is at DESY and has been installed in FLASHForward, where the first streaking experience with beam will be accomplished. As this innovative CERN design requires very high manufacturing precision to guarantee highest azimuthal symmetry of the structure to avoid the deterioration of the polarization of the streaking field, the high-precision tuning-free assembly procedures developed at PSI for the SwissFEL C-band accelerating structures will be used for the manufacturing. Such a TDS will be installed downstream of the undulators of the soft X-ray beamline of SwissFEL and thanks to the variable polarization of the TDS, it will be possible to perform a complete characterization of the 6D phase-space. For SwissFEL a novel production process for high-gradient, high-precision C-band accelerating structures had been developed at PSI and was implemented for series production in collaboration with industry. The copper parts of the structures are machined and brazed relying on a ultra-high precision manufacturing process and tight mechanical tolerances; no RF tuning methods are applied during or after production. So far none of the structures of the series production failed during RF power conditioning and operation in the SwissFEL facility. After completing the series production for SwissFEL PSI started collaborations with CERN, ELETTRA and DESY for applying the production process and related know-how to other frequencies, namely S-band (3 GHz) and X-band (12 GHz). Magnetic chicanes are used in accelerator facilities to longitudinally compress the accelerated particle bunches. The second compression chicane (BC2) of SwissFEL consists of four dipole magnets bending the beam on the horizontal plane along a C-shaped orbit and has a total length of 17 m. The position of the two central dipoles can be continuously adjusted to achieve the required transverse offset in order to realize a wide range of compression schemes. To ensure the requires mechanical stability of the accelerator components sitting on the long and movable steel girder (7.7 m), it is essential to design a stiff support structure with high eigen frequencies. In the design stage, displacement frequency responses are calculated in a modal based linear dynamic analysis using finite element method to ensure vibration amplitude below 1 micrometer. Special considerations are given to the modelling of linear guide systems, as they introduce nonlinear support conditions and need to be adequately simplified in the calculation. After completing the BC2 assembly, vibration measurements were performed. In the framework of the SwissFEL project, an alternative electron source to an RF photo-gun was investigated. It consists of a high voltage (up to 500 kV), high gradient pulsed diode system followed by single stage RF acceleration at 1.5 GHz. The electrons are produced from photo-cathodes or from field emitter arrays. The final goal of this accelerator is to produce a 200 pC electron beam with a projected normalized emittance below 0.4 mm.mrad and a bunch length of less than 10 ps. In the framework of the SwissFEL activities at PSI we developed a powerful UV laser system delivering wavelength-tunable pulses at a central wavelength varying from 260 to 283 nm. The laser system based on a ultra-stable frequency-trippled Ti:sapphire amplifier delivers mJ pulse energy within a duration of 1-10 ps with 1.5 nm spectral width. Temporal flattop pulses are achieved by direct UV shaping with a UV Dazzler and a prism-based stretcher. The system is used to explore thermal emittance and quantum efficiency dependence on photon energy from metallic photo-cathode (Cu and Mo). With pepperpot techniques we have measured the predicted theoretical limit for thermal emittance (0.4 mm.mrad / mm rms laser spot size at 283 nm and 0.6 mm.mrad / mm at 263 nm) for metallic photocathodes., Proceedings of the 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2010, Kyoto, Japan

The designed TDS has the new feature of providing variable polarization of the deflecting field**. The possibility of changing the orientation of the streaking field of the TDS to an arbitrary azimuthal angle allows for 3D characterization of the phase space using tomographic methods***. Moreover the complete 6D characterization of the beam phase space is possible by combining this technique with quadrupole scans and a dipole spectrometer. As this new cavity design requires very high manufacturing precision to guarantee highest azimuthal symmetry of the structure to avoid the deterioration of the polarization of the streaking field, the high precision tuning-free assembly procedures developed at PSI for the SwissFEL C-band accelerating structures will be used for the manufacturing****.
