The present study describes whole social networks in four adult day care centers (ADCCs) and four continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Each respondent received a list of names of all participants in the respective ADCC or CCRC and was asked to indicate whom he/she knows from the list. We obtained whole social network properties and used hierarchical cluster analysis to classify the settings. A striking finding of the present study is that one can classify with a relatively high degree of accuracy a setting as an ADCC or a CCRC, simply based on its in-degree and out-degree properties (# of people who know a person and # of people one knows). Hence, ADCCs and CCRCs likely offer quite different experiences for their users. Despite similarities, CCRCs likely allow for more intimate and active social relations. This information should be valuable to administrators and care providers.
