Recent indirect drive inertial confinement fusion implosions on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) [Spaeth et al., Fusion Sci. Technol. 69, 25 (2016)] have crossed the threshold of ignition. However, performance has been variable due to several factors. One of the leading sources of variability is the quality of the high-density carbon (HDC) shells used as ablators in these experiments. In particular, these shells can have a number of defects that have been found to correlate with the appearance of ablator mix into the hot spot and a degradation in nuclear yield. These defects include pits on the ablator surface, voids in the ablator bulk, high-Z debris from the Hohlraum wall that adheres to the capsule surface, and finally the inherent granular micro-structure of the crystalline HDC itself. This paper summarizes high-resolution modeling of each of these mix sources in two recent high-performance NIF implosion experiments. The simulated impact from a range of individual capsule defects is found to be broadly consistent with the trends seen in experiment, lending credence to the modeling results and the details of the mixing process that they reveal. Interestingly, modeling of the micro-structure inherent to HDC shows that this perturbation source results in considerable mixing of the deuterium–tritium fuel with ablator material during the implosion. The reduction in fuel compression from this mix results in an approximately factor of two reduction in neutron yield in current implosions and emphasizes the importance of mitigating this significant performance degradation. Previously, hydrodynamic simulations [Clark et al., Phys. Plasmas 23, 072707 (2016)] suggested that precisely tailoring the capsule ablator thickness (shimming) could counterbalance cylindrical Hohlraum Legendre P4 drive asymmetries at the capsule in laser indirect drive implosions. As a result, the stagnated deuterium–tritium (DT) fuel areal density P4 asymmetry is reduced, potentially resulting in a nuclear yield increase. Inflight radiographs of various level of shimmed capsules with plastic (CH) ablators showed that shims can indeed control the in-flight capsule shell P4 asymmetry, with a linear sensitivity to shim amplitude that is close to analytic estimates and simulations. Furthermore, the stagnated DT fuel areal density P4 asymmetry inferred from downscattered neutron imaging was reduced when the capsule shim was applied, in agreement with simulations matching the inflight shell asymmetry. A nuclear yield improvement via shim was not observed, as predicted, likely due to implosion instabilities and as built capsule shim deviations from an ideal P4 shape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the first gamma-ray-based measurements of the areal density of ablators in inertial-confinement-fusion capsule implosions. The measurements, made at the OMEGA laser [T. R. Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)], used observations of gamma rays arising from inelastic scattering of 14.1-MeV deuterium-tritium (DT) neutrons on 12C nuclei in the compressed plastic ablators. The emission of 12C(n,n′γ) gamma rays from the capsules is detected using the Gamma Reaction History instrument [H. W. Herrmann et al., J. Phys.: Conf. Ser. 244, 032047 (2010)] operating at OMEGA. From the ratio of a capsule's 12C(n,n′γ) emission to the emission from the same processes in an in situ reference graphite 'puck' of known mass and geometry [N. M. Hoffman et al., in IFSA 2011 proceedings (submitted)], we determine the time-averaged areal density of 12C in the capsule's compressed ablator. Measured values of total ablator areal density for thirteen imploded capsules, in the range 23 ± 10 to 58 ± 14 mg/cm2, are comparable to values calculated in 1D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, and measured by charged-particle techniques.
