Abstract: International audience; The work aims to design a trilayer composite dedicated to electromagnetic shielding over a large frequency range, from 1 Hz to 20 GHz. Analytical and numerical models are used to determine the shielding effectiveness (SE) of this composite in the case of a planar shield. The shield is constituted of a support layer, a magnetic layer, and a conductive layer. Two possible designs are considered. To simplify the numerical calculation, a homogenization method and the Artificial Material Single Layer (AMSL) method are used. The proposed composite shows a good shielding capacity over the whole studied frequency range, with shielding effectiveness higher than 17 dB and 75 dB, respectively, in the near-field (1 Hz–1 MHz) and far-field (1 MHz–20 GHz). Both homogenization and AMSL methods show good suitability in near-field and allow one to greatly reduce the calculation time.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a zero-dimensional (0D) model of hydride tank. The model aims to study the dynamic heat and mass transfers during desorption process in order to investigate the thermal-fluidic behaviors of this hydride tank. This proposed model has been validated experimentally thanks to a tailor-made developed test bench. This test bench allows the hydride characterization at tank scale and also the energetic characterization. The simulation results of the heat exchanges and mass transfer in and between the coupled reaction bed, show good agreement with the experimental ones. It is shown that the heat produced by a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) (estimated starting from an electrical model) is enough to heat the metal alloy (FeTi) and therefore release the hydrogen with a sufficient mass flow rate to supply the PEMFC. Furthermore, the obtained results highlight the importance of the developed model for energy management of the coupling of fuel cell and hydride tank system.

Abstract: This study presents a method of producing thick (i.e., in the $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ range) polycrystalline $\mathrm{Gd}$ free-standing flexible films. Preparation is carried out by sputtering on silicon conventional substrates using tantalum as a buffer and capping layer. Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties show good agreement with data from high-purity bulk $\mathrm{Gd}$, and are not altered by substrate removal. Moreover, the free-standing film is flexible and all the relevant magnetic properties (i.e., Curie temperature ${T}_{c}$, saturation magnetization ${M}_{s}$, and isothermal entropy change $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}S$) are preserved under bending (up to a $\ensuremath{\epsilon}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.78\mathrm{%}$ strain over the two film sides). The technological opportunities heralded by availability of magnetocaloric flexible self-sustaining films are discussed in the conclusions with particular focus on energy-conversion applications (i.e., cooling and thermal energy harvesting). More precisely, the output-power upper bound of an thermal-energy harvester deploying a $\mathrm{Gd}$ flexible film with the reported properties is worked-out using a thermal switch model presented elsewhere. The calculations show a potential output able to supply the new generation of IoT wireless devices as well as small medical implants. The result moot $\mathrm{Gd}$ free-standing flexible films as a benchmark for a new generation of small high-throughput magnetocaloric energy-conversion devices.

Abstract: Harvesting and directly converting the largely untapped and omnipresent low-grade heat into electricity has huge technological potential for supplying internet of things (IoT) devices, and wireless sensors in smart buildings applications. To this end, we present a self-actuating, autonomous, thermomagnetic generator (TMG) showing state-of-the-art net power output 4.2 μ W ( 240 μ W cm−3), working over a 35.1 °C temperature difference. The core of our design is made of cheap and easily available piezoelectric buzzers and of commercial LaFeSi magnetocaloric materials from Vacumschmelze. The device self oscillating cycle is studied as a dynamical system with particular attention to the interplay between mechanical and thermal dynamics.

Abstract: The lithium-ion capacitor is a recent energy storage component. Although it has been commercialized for several years, its hybridization still requires further investigation to characterize it. The literature has studied some of its characteristics focusing on experimentation at positive temperatures. This paper aims to enlarge the tests to include very low temperatures, showing the difference between Nyquist plots at 65 and −30 ˚C. It also presents the Ragone plot for several temperatures, with a comparison between three storage systems: a battery, a supercapacitor, and the lithium-ion capacitor. Finally, a model of the LIC is proposed, for low and high temperatures, with experimental validation.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to propose a new development of the fuel cell characterization tool based on Voltage Singularity Spectrum (VSS), a pattern that can advantageously be estimated from the "free" evolution of the stack voltage. A Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) designed to operate in micro Combined Heat and Power units is investigated to create an experimental database made of normal and abnormal operating conditions. Some VSS signatures based on Wavelet Leader Multifractal Analysis (WLMA) are computed on low- and high-frequency filtered stack voltage signals reflecting different physical phenomena dynamics. The resulting low- and high-frequency VSS computed for six different operating conditions are then compared to the Electrochemical Impedance Spectra (EIS) recorded in the same conditions. In this way, we intend to establish some links between the VSS patterns and the EIS based on well-known physical analyses. We also show that the dominant singularity strengths of the low (and possibly also high) frequency VSS can be considered as relevant clustering features to identify various PEMFC operating states (linked with poorer / better air diffusion, with lower / higher MEA hydration), as it is usually done with the use of the characteristic resistances intercepted on the EIS graph x-axis.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we have compared magnetic, magnetostrictive, and piezomagnetic properties of isotropic and anisotropic cobalt ferrite pellets. The isotropic sample was prepared by the ceramic method while the sample exhibiting uniaxial anisotropy was made by reactive sintering using spark plasma sintering (SPS). This technique permits us to induce a magnetic anisotropy in cobalt ferrite in the direction of the applied pressure during the SPS process. Sample with uniaxial anisotropy revealed a higher longitudinal magnetostriction and piezomagnetism compared with the isotropic sample, but the transversal magnetostriction and piezomagnetism were dramatically reduced. In the case of magnetoelectric (ME) layered composite, the ME coefficient is directly related to the sum of the longitudinal and transversal piezomagnetic coefficients. These two coefficients being opposite in sign, the use of material exhibiting high longitudinal and low transversal piezomagnetic coefficient (or vice versa) in ME devices is expected to improve the ME effect. Hence, ME bilayer devices were made using isotropic and anisotropic cobalt ferrite stuck with a lead zirconate titanate layer. ME measurements at low frequencies revealed that bilayer with anisotropic cobalt ferrite exhibits an ME coefficient three times higher than a bilayer with isotropic cobalt ferrite. We also investigated the behavior of such composites when excited at resonant frequency.

Abstract: Semiconductor devices incorporated into power electronics systems are proven to be highly sensitive to their thermal environment. Thus, temperature measurement is a key concern when it comes to reliability of power modules. Some Thermo-Sensitive Electrical Parameters (TSEPs) are used to evaluate online temperature of semiconductor components, in operating conditions of power converters. However, the accuracy and the reliability of those TSEPs are not yet fully demonstrated. To overcome this drawback, a power instrumented diode was developed with a Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) sensor integrated on its top metal surface. This validation tool is characterized in this paper under constant power dissipation. The embedded RTD sensor is conditioned in a resistance bridge circuit. A dynamic characterization of a realistic power module is performed through thermal impedance evaluation. Abstract: International audience; Being produced from renewable energy, hydrogen is one of the most efficient energy carriers of the future. Using metal alloys, hydrogen can be stored and transported at a low cost, in a safe and effective manner. However, most metals react with hydrogen to form a compound called metal hydride (MH). This reaction is an exothermic process, and as a result releases heat. With sufficient heat supply, hydrogen can be released from the as-formed metal hydride. In this work, we propose an integrated power system of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) together with a hydride tank designed for vehicle use. We investigate different aspects for developing metal hydride tanks and their integration in the PEMFC, using water as the thermal fluid and a FeTi intermetallic compound as the hydrogen storage material. Ground truth simulations show that the annular metal hydride tank meets the hydrogen requirements of the fuel cell, but to the detriment of the operating temperature of the fuel cell (FC).

Abstract: We numerically study the design of a thermomagnetic generator aimed to convert a heat flow into electrical energy. The device uses the variation of magnetization of a magnetocaloric material (MCM) along a cyclic transformation between the hot and the cold sources. The magnetic energy is transformed into mechanical energy via the magnetic forces and eventually into electrical energy through an electromechanical transducer. Firstly, we work-out the optimal size of the cantilever in order to achieve the self-oscillation of the MCM between the two heat sources. Eventually, using finite element calculations, we compare the efficiency of a piezoelectric transducer (PZT 5a) with that of a set of coils in order to convert the mechanical into electrical energy. The piezoelectrics and the coils recover 0.025% and 0.018% respectively of the available mechanical energy (116 mJ/cm3). The possible strategies to achieve a better performance are discussed in theconclusion.

Abstract: This paper presents a new method for the accelerated ageing tests of power semiconductor devices in photovoltaic inverters. Mission profiles are analysed: output current and ambient temperature are extracted over several years from multiple photovoltaic plants located in France. It is then proposed to create a particular ageing profile which takes into account not only the different constraints of the application of the photovoltaic inverters (high-frequency switching and sinusoidal-shaped current), but also reproduces a typical profile of the output current of photovoltaic inverters. Similarly, the ambient temperature varies as in the real application. By applying current injections with relatively long durations, the DBC (Direct Bonded Copper) substrates and the coolers are subjected to high temperature swings. This method should show better representation of the thermal behavior of DC/AC inverters used in photovoltaic applications, and is expected to show more representative results than traditional power cycling, thus reducing the favoring of certain failure modes to the detriment of others.

Abstract: Silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs power modules are very attractive devices and are already available in the market. Nevertheless, despite technological progress, reliability remains an issue and reliability tests must be conducted to introduce more widely these devices into power systems. Because of trapping/de-trapping phenomena at the SiC/SiO 2 interface that lead to the shift of threshold voltage, test protocols based on silicon components cannot be used as is, especially in high temperature conditions. Using high temperature SiC MOSFET power modules, we highlight the main experimental difficulties to perform power cycling tests. These reversible physical mechanisms preclude the use of temperature sensitive parameters (TSEP) for junction temperature measurements, so we set up fiber optic temperature sensors for this purpose. Moreover, these degradation phenomena lead to difficulties in both controlling the test conditions and seeking for reliable aging indicator parameters. Finally, a power cycling test protocol at high temperature conditions is proposed for such devices.

Abstract: International audience; Co and Mn co-doped BiFeO3 samples are successfully realized using a stirred hydrothermal route to form BiFe0.9CoxMn0.1-xO3 (for x=0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.09) system. Our data show that both the ferroelectric (TC) and antiferromagnetic (TN) transition temperatures increase especially TN varies by up to 23°C when changing from BiFe0.9Co0.01Mn0.09O3 to BiFe0.9Co0.09Mn0.01O3. Such strong TN enhancement is explained by Co ionic size which induces a chemical pressure by reducing the unit cell and consequently favor the exchange coupling between the magnetic moments carried by Fe/Co/Mn. Moreover, Co 3+ (d 6 electronic configuration) by replacing Fe (d 5) increases the magnetization reaching a value of 3.394 emu/g for BiFe0.9Co0.09Mn0.01O3, by favoring double exchange interactions. The direct magnetoelectric (ME) measurements on those samples show a significant increase of the ME coefficient with a value of 8.720 mV/(Oe.cm) for BiFe0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O3 i.e. up to 6 times higher than that of pure BiFeO3. For Mn-rich compositions, because of a parasitic Bi25FeO40 phase and high electric losses, no intrinsic ME coefficient could be measured.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents an inductor-less start-up converter for a sub-100 mV energy harvester based on an Armstrong oscillator topology using a piezoelectric transformer and a normally-on MOSFET. Two models of the converter have been detailed and validated experimentally for the start-up phase and steady-state operation to respectively determine the minimum start-up input voltage and the voltage gain. The models have been validated experimentally in a setup associating the converter and a thermo-electric generator. Based on a Rosen-type piezoelectric transformer and off-the-shelf components, the proposed start-up topology begins to oscillate at 15 mV and achieves a 1 V output voltage at only 43 mV. Compared to the literature, the topology needs no inductive component and achieves self-starting operation with a smaller input voltage.

Abstract: International audience; Multiphase Interleaved Boost Converter (MPIBC), for use in high performance vehicle application, is of a great interest. It allows the transfer of energetic flows between main and uxiliary sources (fuel cells, batteries, supercapacitors) and charges (dc-bus, motors, wheels and auxiliaries) with reduction in current source ripples. In order to enhance its efficiency, Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductors are used instead of Silicon (Si) ones. MOSFETs and diodes used in the MPIBC are exposed to high electrical and thermal stresses. A failure of these switches strongly affects performances of the system. Therefore, switch failures handling is very important to overcome several risks in early stage and to ensure continuity of service. It consists on fault detection (first step) and fault tolerant actions (second step) to restore healthy state in case of switch short-circuit and open-circuit faults. The suggested switch fault detection methods are simple and nonintrusive based on the online monitoring of switch drain-to-source-voltage VDS and comparing it to a threshold voltage which is calculated according to a simple strategy. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: EPE'17 ECCE Europe - 19th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications, Varsovie, POLOGNE, 11-/09/2017 - 14/09/2017; This paper presents a new method for the accelerated ageing tests of photovoltaic inverters, created by analyzing the mission profiles of the current and ambient temperature extracted over several years from multiple photovoltaic plants located in France. It is proposed to create a particular ageing profile which takes into account not only the different constraints of the application of the photovoltaic inverters (high-frequency switching and sinusoidal-shaped current), but also reproduces a typical profile of the output current of photovoltaic inverters. Similarly, thermal cycling is applied simultaneously by varying the ambient temperature as in the real application, and by applying current injections with relatively long durations, which will lead to a rise in the temperatures of the DBC substrates and the coolers. This method should show better representation of the thermal behavior of DC/AC inverters used in photovoltaic applications, and is expected to give results that are more representative than traditional power cycling, and thus reducing the favoring of certain failure modes to the detriment of others.

Abstract: ICEREGA 2017 -International Conference on Emerging and Renewable Energy: Generation and Automation, Belfort, FRANCE, 07-/07/2017 - 07/07/2017; The purpose of this article is to study the portability of a non-intrusive and free of any external / internal disturbance diagnosis tool devoted to the monitoring of the State of Health (SoH) of PEM Fuel Cell (PEMFC) stack. The tool is based on a thorough analysis of the stack voltage signal using a multifractal formalism and wavelet leaders. It offers well-suited signatures indicators on the SoH of the Fuel Cell. Some relevant descriptors extracted from these patterns (singularity features) are used in the frame of Machine Learning approaches to allow the PEMFC fault identification. The proposed diagnosis strategy is evaluated with two different PEMFC stacks. The first one is designed for automotive applications and the second one is dedicated to stationary use (micro combined heat and power - µCHP application). Framework of the 'Decentralized energy production' project, directed by EFFICACITY, the French R&D Institute for urban energy transition.

Abstract: International audience; This article deals with analytical models dedicated to iron losses in yokes and pole pieces of a magnetic gear with a concentric structure. The magnetic field distribution is determined in yokes by solving both Poisson's and Laplace's equations, whereas for pole pieces the magnetic field is computed by coupling the previous analytical model with a reluctance network model. The iron loss can then be determined in post-processing from the magnetic field analytical computation. The iron loss model used in this article takes into account the temporal and spatial variations of flux density. Results of this global analytical model permit to analyze the temporal and spatial evolution of flux density. In recognizing that the purpose of this model is to be integrated into a set of models for the global mechatronic optimization of magnetic gears, it is essential to minimize computation time. This work is being applied in the context of high-power (multi-MW) wind turbines.

Abstract: International audience; This article deals with the optimization of a full magnetic indirect drive (FMID) with magnetic gears which uses an analytical model based on subdomain resolution of Laplace's and Poisson's equations of the magnetic gear. A bi-objective analytical optimization is performed with a PSO algorithm with a minimization of the mass of the magnetic parts and a maximization of the gear ratio. This intermediate optimization is a step to optimize a 6MW FMID for a offshore wind turbine with one or two magnetic gears stages. It also compares FMID magnetic parts masses with a direct drive conversion chain with the same generator topology (hybrid excitation synchronous generator).

Abstract: APEC 2017 - IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, Tampa, ETATS-UNIS, 18-/05/2017 -; ThermoSensitive Electrical Parameters (TSEPs) are being investigated in both academic and industrial works. Nevertheless, in several cases, the temperature evaluation obtained with TSEPs can be erroneous or inaccurate. It is therefore important to propose tools which are able to evaluate the accuracy and the robustness of TSEPs in operating conditions of converters. A solution to carry out this evaluation is to use power dies including a temperature sensor in their structure. This paper evaluates the possibility of using a commercial Intelligent Power Module (IPM) with embedded sensors in IGBT dies to evaluate TSEPs under DC and switching conditions.

Abstract: This paper presents the comparative study of two hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) of a two front wheel driven electric vehicle. The primary energy source of the HESS is a Li-Ion battery, whereas the secondary energy source is either an ultracapacitor (UC) or a flywheel energy system (FES). The main role of the secondary source is to deliver/recover energy during high peak power demand, but also to increase battery lifetime, considered among the most expensive items in the electric vehicle. As a first step, a techno-economic comparative study, supported by strong literature research, is performed between the UC and the FES. The design and sizing of each element will be presented. The comparison criteria and specifications are also described. The adopted approach in this paper is based on an academic non-oriented point of view. In a second step, each of the HESS will be integrated in a more global Simulink model which includes the vehicle model, the traction control system (TCS), the regenerative braking system and the vehicle actuators. Simulation tests are performed for an extreme braking and vehicle starting-up operations. Tests are realized on two different surface road types and conditions (high and low friction roads) and for different initial system states. In order to show the most appropriate storage system regarding compactness, weight and battery constraints minimization, deep comparative analysis is provided.

Abstract: This paper will present the regenerative braking quantification, design control, and simulation of a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for an electric vehicle (EV) in extreme conditions. The EV is driven by two 30-kW permanent magnet synchronous motors. The HESS contains a Li-Ion battery and ultracapacitor (UC) storage element sources as well as a dissipative resistor. The UC will be mainly involved in braking and traction modes. The role of the resistor is to protect the dc bus and the battery according to the voltage and current constraints. The sizing of the elements takes into consideration the extreme braking conditions of the vehicle while respecting the Economic Commission for Europe Regulation No. 13 Harmonized. Controllers are being used in order to regulate the various electrical variables of the overall system. A sequential logic controller is also being introduced. The role of the sequential logic controller is to activate the different existing regulation controllers and to ensure the switching between the storage elements depending on the system states. Simulation tests will be performed covering a wide operation range for variable braking load, according to vehicle speed and road type, and extreme braking conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Electrical insulation materials quality and reliability play a central role in providing the electrical machines reliable operation. It is well recognized that insulating system of low voltage motor fed by converter is exposed to electrical stresses arising from repetitive square waveform of supplying voltage while additional impact of temperature, vibrations and environmental operation conditions are imposed. The implementation of wide bandgap power semiconductors as SiC and GaN in recent years allows to create very powerful converters with high switching speed. On the other hand it leads to a remarkable increasing electro-thermal constraints applied to windings' turn-to-turn insulation of motors fed by such converters. The relevance of new testing methods and test benches is well found by remarkable modern advances in semiconductors technology. Testing methods for low voltage motors winding wires insulation proposed in this paper permit to evaluate the withstand capability of insulation materials applying the high frequency modulated signals representative for traditional converters supplying (μs level of impulse rise/fall time), as well as the voltage waveforms with very straight adjustable dV/dt, very fast rise time and fall time (ns level of impulse rise/fall time) engendered by new semiconductor devices based on wide bandgap materials. The possibility to modify experiment parameters in wide rage for insulation endurance tests allows to obtain a rich data for further analysis.

Abstract: International audience; The Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique is commonly used to supply modern high-speed electrical machines. The fundamental frequency is typically in the kilohertz range, with switching frequencies of several tens of kilohertz, as determined by the new SiC or GaAs based power transistors modules. Switching introduces minor loops in the major hysteresis cycle, with durations of the order of 100 µs or lower, with the resulting magnetization dynamics influenced by strong skin effect. However, since these minor loops have relatively small amplitude, their constitutive equation may be described by an equivalent permeability (real or complex), depending on the mean slope of the minor loop and its static energy loss. By retrieving this permeability, the classical loss is straightforwardly calculated by analytical solution of the Maxwell's equations. In this work, we measure and calculate, according to the quasi-linear approximation for the minor loops, the magnetic energy losses of 0.194 mm thick non-oriented Fe-Si 3.2% sheets subjected to PWM induction waveform. Minor loop peak amplitudes ranging between 50 mT and 0.2 T and frequencies up to 10 kHz are investigated. The results are consistent with the proposed model, to within 5%.

Abstract: International audience; —This paper presents an optimized design of a Hybrid-Excited Flux-Switching machine (HEFSM) with a very low quantity of permanent magnet (PM) for a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) traction application. The design examined is the result of an evolutionary optimization algorithm. The adopted solution needs only 650g of PMs to reach a maximum power of 80kW over a wide speed range (2,600 to 12,000rpm) and a peak torque of 233Nm at 2,605rpm. The contribution of the field excitation coils is appraised, particularly on the back-emf, the mean torque and the core loss levels. The global performances of the machine are presented through efficiency and losses maps and the contribution of the PMs is also discussed.

Abstract: In a context of growing electrification of road transport, Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) appears as an appealing alternative technology as it enables Electric Vehicles (EVs) to charge while driving and without any mechanical contact (with overhead cables or rails in the ground). Although the WPT technology background dates from the end of 20th century, recent advances in semiconductor technologies have enabled the first real demonstrations. Within the FABRIC European project, the French research Institute VEDECOM and its partners implemented a whole prototype wireless power transfer charging infrastructure. The first demonstrations of Inductive WPT in different real driving conditions (up to 20 kW, from 0 to 100 km/h, with one or two serial vehicles) were provided. This paper describes the prototype equipment and its instrumentation and provides the system characterization results. The future of the Inductive WPT technology is further discussed considering its different technical and economic challenges. In parallel, how this technology could be part of future generation road infrastructures is discussed. Future research and demonstration steps are presented in the conclusion.

Abstract: International audience; – This paper presents the decoupled active and reactive power control (control), using a Phase-Locked Loop () for synchronization, and applied to the control of Multicellular Parallel Inverter (MPI) for a grid-connected Photovoltaic () system. We explain the value of this multicellular structure of inverter compared to a conventional inverter. We also present and discuss the simulation results obtained using the Matlab software (simulink and simpowersystems).

Abstract: IMCET - IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology, Beyrouth, LIBAN, 08-/12/2016 -; This paper presents the integration of different sub-modules in order to simulate the traction control of a twowheel driven electric vehicle. The vehicle is powered by a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS). The HESS is composed of a Li-Ion battery, and a high speed Flywheel Energy Storage (FES). The electrical power generated by the FES highly strongly depends on the power demand (available torque and speed) and on the flywheel torque control method. The Traction Control System (TCS) used is based on a sliding mode slip controller applied to the driven motors and depending on the road surface type and condition. Simulation results show the dynamic behavior of the flywheel according to the desired control, the energy strategy as well as the vehicle kinematic characteristic plots.

The HESS is composed of a Li-Ion battery, and a high speed Flywheel Energy Storage (FES). At low speed, the integration of a controlled dissipative resistor is used to prevent battery overcurrent and overvoltage. At high speed, Voltage Current Limited Maximum Torque (VCLMT) control method is applied to reach the maximal speed allowed. Sizing of the flywheel and the design of the Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control will also be presented. Simulation results show the dynamic behavior of the flywheel according to the PMSM desired control as well as the energy recovery strategy.

Abstract: Within a thermally well-insulated building, internal heat gains are getting more important on the point of the building thermal condition and its energy management [1] , [2] , [3] . In this study, we are focusing on thermal impact of heat dissipation of electrical appliances on buildings by applying a dynamic thermal model of electrical appliances. While a static model considers only power profile or power density of electrical appliances, the used dynamic model in this paper contains not only power profile but also thermal characteristics of electrical appliances. The thermal characteristics have been determined in previous study [4] . We shortly explain the methodology. The simulations are conducted with different values of thermal characteristics (power and RxC) representative of standard household appliances. The appliance thermal impact on the buildings in terms of heating energy demand and thermal comfort of occupants during a winter are investigated. This study is conducted within both a conventional residential building model and a thermally well-insulated residential building model. Two behaviors were identified: (i) below critical appliance power (600 W, 200 W for the B1 and B2, respectively), we observe fully power substitution of the heating energy demand. (ii) Above this critical power there is no fully substitution. Due to important temperature inhomogeneity within the different zones and the air renew flow structures coupled to the shift of appliance power consumption toward the unoccupied periods, the underlined lack of substitution is explained. It shows the necessity of dynamic thermal modeling of electrical appliances for more accurate and efficient building energy simulation and energy management especially for low energy buildings.

Abstract: INDIN 2016 - IEEE 14th International Conference on Industrial Informatics, Poitiers, France, 19-/07/2016 - 21/07/2016; This paper presents the regenerative braking design control and simulation of a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for an electric vehicle (EV). The EV is driven by two 30 kW permanent magnet synchronous motors. The HESS contains a Li-Ion battery and an Ultra-Capacitor (UC) sources. In extreme braking conditions, the UC should be able to recover all the power delivered by the motors. When the maximal state of charge of the UC is achieved, the energy will be then recuperated by the battery. The introduction of a braking resistor would help the system to respect the voltage and current constraints and to protect the battery. This paper will validate the combination of the designed controllers ensuring the switching between the storage and dissipative elements while respecting the electrical constraints of the overall system, in particular for critical braking conditions. A Simulink model will be developed and validated.

Abstract: REDEC 2016 - 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries, Zouk Mosbeh, LIBAN, 13-/07/2016 - 15/07/2016; This paper presents the integration of previously developed Matlab/Simulink® design model and control blocks in order to simulate the entire braking energy transfer of a two front wheel-driven electric vehicle. The overall system modules consist of a hybrid energy storage system, two interior permanent magnet synchronous motors and the vehicle model. Other blocks like braking forces distribution module and electrical/mechanical braking forces quantification will also be briefly described. The types and conditions of roads are also integrated in order to study the vehicle behavior. Simulation results validate the global control strategy performance and consistency of the integration taking into consideration the multi-domain aspects of the system.

Abstract: In this article the energy transfer between a flow and a fluttering piezoelectric plate is investigated. In particular, the benefits of the use of a Synchronized Switch Harvesting on Inductor (SSHI) circuit are studied. Both wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations are conducted in order to analyse the influence of the switching process on the dynamics and the efficiency of the system. Numerical simulations consist of a weakly non-linear model of a plate in axial flow equipped with a single pair of piezoelectric patches, discretized using a Galerkin method where basis functions are the modes of the plate in vacuum. The discretized model is then integrated in time. The results presented in this paper show that a significant improvement of the harvested energy can be obtained using SSHI circuits compared to basic resistive circuits. It is also shown that for strongly coupled systems, the switching process inherent to he SSHI circuit has a significant impact on the dynamics of the flag, which tends to decrease the relative efficiency gain., to appear in Smart Materials and Structures

Abstract: International audience; We estimate the efficiency and power of a thermal energy harvesting thermodynamic cycle using a magnetocaloric material as active substance. The thermodynamic cycle is computed using an equation of state, either extrapolated from experimental data or deduced using a phenomenological Landau model. The magnetic work is then compared to the maximum work. Afterwards power is estimated using a simple thermal exchange model. Simulations of different cycles for different working points illustrate the tradeoff between power and efficiency.

Abstract: As power density of electrical appliances in a building sector grows up, its thermal effect also increases especially within a well-insulated building. In order to investigate the heat gain of these appliances, this paper proposes a dynamic thermal model of electrical appliances which is embedded in a building thermal analysis by using thermal network method. For this, thermal-electrical analogy and a static model and a dynamic model of electrical appliance coupled to a thermal network of a building are presented. As applications, a monitor and a computer are selected and their thermal models are adapted to a building model. Finally, their thermal influence is observed by experimental results and simulation one.

Abstract: International audience; Piezoelectric transformers were adopted in recent year due to their many inherent advantages such as safety, no EMI problem, low housing profile, and high power density, etc. The characteristics of the piezoelectric transformers are well known when the load impedance is a pure resistor. However, when piezoelectric transformers are used in AC/DC or DC/DC converters, there are non-linear electronic circuits connected before and after the transformer. Consequently, the output load is variable and due to the output capacitance of the transformer the optimal working point change. This paper starts from modeling a piezoelectric transformer connected to a full wave rectifier in order to discuss the design constraints and configuration of the transformer. The optimization method adopted here use the MOPSO algorithm (Multiple Objective Particle Swarm Optimization). We start with the formulation of the objective function and constraints; then the results give different sizes of the transformer and the characteristics. In other word, this method is looking for a best size of the transformer for optimal efficiency condition that is suitable for variable load. Furthermore, the size and the efficiency are found to be a trade-off. This paper proposes the completed design procedure to find the minimum size of PT in need. The completed design procedure is discussed by a given specification. The PT derived from the proposed design procedure can guarantee both good efficiency and enough range for load variation.

Abstract: International audience; This paper sets forth a sizing optimization methodology of a surface permanent magnet machine-converter system over a torque-speed operating profile. The two optimization objectives are to minimize the cost of the machine-converter system and to minimize (or maximize) electrical energy consumption (or generation). The optimization parameters serve to describe both the machine geometry and the electrical ratings of the electronic power converter. Each operating point of the profile is treated independently, and current control is optimized at every operating point in order to not only minimize machine drive losses but also satisfy several constraints and then implicitly considering flux-weakening possibility. This optimization methodology is generic and is applied to a particular case: a direct-drive conversion chain for a wave energy converter. We show that taking into account both the sizing parameters of the converter and the flux-weakening control, in addition to the classical sizing parameters of the machine, has a strong impact on the machine-converter system optimal results. Moreover, the strong coupling with the wave energy converter through damping parameters, plays also a crucial role on the sizing results.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a fast and precise electromagnetic-thermal model of a redundant dual star Flux-Switching Permanent Magnet (FSPM) motor for the embedded applications with driving cycles, e.g. Hybrid Electrical Vehicle (HEV), aerospace, etc. This model is based on a prior steady characterization by Finite Element Method (FEM) 2D of the FSPM motor via calculating the instantaneous torque, the normal and tangential components of magnetic flux density (Br and ) of each element of stator as well as rotor for different RMS current densities and different rotor positions. These results are then used in the analytical copper and iron losses models for calculating the instantaneous copper and rotor as well as stator iron losses during one driving cycle. The Lumped Parameter (LP) and Finite Element 2D transient thermal models are then carried out, in which the previously obtained instantaneous power losses are used as heat sources for calculating the temperatures of different motor parts during driving cycles. In the thermal studies, a transformation of irregular slot structure into a regular (rectangular) one is applied to simplify the calculation of winding thermal resistance. The Thermal-Electromagnetic Analysis method in this paper can also be extended for all the other applications with driving cycles. The experimental tests are carried out to validate the analytical and numerical results.

Abstract: EPE'15 ECCE-Europe, 2015 17th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications, Geneve, SUISSE, 09-/09/2015 - 10/09/2015; Thermal characterizations inside power device crystal are required for failure analyses physic of power electronic devices. We have succeeded to keep power devices functional after cross section. We use Raman spectroscopy to map temperature and mechanical stress distributions on cross-sections of IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) devices in forward bias conditions with spatial resolution up to 500nm. Temperature and stress contributions on Raman diffusion were deconvoluted fitting Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) and position of the Stokes peak. For the first time, it was possible to quantify experimentally temperature and stress evolutions in the Si bulk during operation. These results give experimental data on thermo-mechanical coupling in power devices. We have also compared stress measurements in unbiased condition with numerical models made with finite elements under ANSYS with a focus on IGBT elementary cell areas.

Abstract: Purpose – To foster the grid integration of both electric vehicles (EV) and renewable generators, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the possible synergies between these players so as to jointly improve the production predictability while ensuring a green mobility. It is here achieved by the mean of a grid commitment over the overall power produced by a collaborative system which here gathers a photovoltaic (PV) plant with an EV fleet. The scope of the present contribution is to investigate the conditions to make the most of such an association, mainly regarding to the management strategies and optimal sizing, taking into account forecast errors on PV production. Design/methodology/approach – To evaluate the collaboration added value, several concerns are aggregated into a primary energy criterion: the commitment compliance, the power spillage, the vehicle charging, the user mobility and the battery aging. Variations of these costs are computed over a range of EV fleet size. Moreover, the influence of the charging strategy is specifically investigated throughout the comparison of three managements: a simple rule of thumb, a perfect knowledge deterministic case and a charging strategy computed by stochastic dynamic programming. The latter is based on an original modeling of the production forecast error. This methodology is carried out to assess the collaboration added value for two operators’ points of view: a virtual power plant (VPP) and a balance responsible party (BRP). Findings – From the perspective of a BRP, the added value of PV-EV collaboration for the energy system has been evidenced in any situation even when the charging strategy is very simple. On the other hand, for the case of a VPP operator, the coupling between the optimal sizing and the management strategy is highlighted. Originality/value – A co-optimization of the sizing and the management of a PV-EV collaborative system is introduced and the influence of the management strategy on the collaboration added value has been investigated. This gave rise to the presentation and implementation of an original modeling tool of the PV production forecast error. Finally, to widen the scope of application, two different business models have been tackled and compared.

Abstract: International audience; Today research on supplying of low power consumption device is highly focused on piezoelectric energy harvesting from ambient vibration. The most popular structure is a cantilever beam with piezoelectric patch to convert mechanical energy into electric energy. In the past researches, the theoretical analysis and interfacing circuit design of single cantilever beam structure is highly developed. In this study, the electrical interfacing circuit of two (or more) piezoelectric generators connected to only one load is proposed and discussed. The nonlinear synchronized switching technique SSHI (Synchronized Switching Harvesting in Inductor) is examined to increase the power efficiency effectively of each piezoelectric generator. In the multiple cantilever beam or flag structure application, the structure may be composed of many piezoelectric patches and the interfacing circuit becomes more complicated and important. From the theoretical analysis and the governing equation, the equivalent circuit of two cantilever beam will be proposed and simulated with the optimized synchronous electric charge extraction (OSECE) nonlinear technique to optimize the interfacing circuit and increase the power efficiency by using the Matlab and PSIM software. The experiments will also show the good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The interfacing circuit design concept in the two cantilever beams structure can be further used in the multi-piezoelectric patches energy harvesting system such as piezoelectric flag to optimize the circuit and increase the power efficiency.

Abstract: The simplicity of photovoltaic motors makes them ideal candidates for fully autonomous applications requiring thousands of operating hours without maintenance, like water pumping. Photovoltaic motors use photovoltaic cells optically commutated by a shutter driven by the motor rotor to convert light energy into mechanical energy, without the need of any brushes or other power electronics. With the decrease of photovoltaic cells price, photovoltaic motors could be more affordable and reliable than conventional systems, and therefore particularly well suited for off-grid applications. The concept has been patented under various forms, but the scientific literature is so far very scarce. In this article, we attempt to classify photovoltaic motors, and to explain in details their physical working principle. Then we compare the different architectures by defining two pre-design factors linked to the system maximal output power. Finally, we report first experimental results on a photovoltaic switched reluctance motor (PV SRM) prototype using a 6/4 switched reluctance machine and 12 photovoltaic cells.

Abstract: International audience; This work deals with the Ni-Zn-Cu ferrites for energy conversion. Studies have already shown the beneficial effects of substituting some of divalent ions by Co 2+. Particularly, it appears that with a small amount of cobalt, it is possible to increase the permeability and to reduce magnetic losses. In this paper, our goal is to report if these properties are still valid with another manufacturing process: the spark plasma sintering. This process can be used for reactive sintering where it is possible to synthesize and to sinter the material in a single step in order to greatly reduce production time.

Abstract: The equivalent circuit and electrical interfacing circuit of agalloping-based piezoelectric flag energy harvester is discussed and the nonlinear synchronized switching technique is used to increase the power.Energy harvesting from ambient is highly focused and by using a cantilever beam to convert the vibration energy is the most popular topics. Except using cantilever beam, piezoelectric flag or plate converted the flow energy has been widely invested. As the interfacing circuit is the important design part to increase the power output, in this paper,several interfacing circuit including standard DC approach, SSHI technique and transformer-based SSHI technique are proposed and compared. Abstract: Power conversion systems are dependent on the performance and reliability of static converters. However, they are subject to frequent functional and environmental strains, which can induce failures. The anticipation of these failures is difficult but important so the operation of a system can be halted before a breakdown occurs. In the case of photovoltaic (PV) power plants, the system can be simplified into two distinct blocks: the solar panels/modules and the power inverter. A breakdown in either of these blocks can cause significant downtime in the system. Nevertheless, multiple solar module failures can often be tolerated and not lead to a total breakdown of the entire array, whereas a single component failure in the inverter can lead to a collapse of the entire system. Furthermore, solar panel/module manufacturers often offer warranties of up to 20 years, while warranties for inverters rarely reach the ten-year mark [1]. As such, the overall cost of a PV inverter can increase by a factor of two or three if it undergoes one or two failures during the life of the system. Although the market competition between PV inverter manufacturers has traditionally focused on the efficiency of their product, a failure that induces a downtime of just a few days can easily negate the yield attained through a 1% efficiency improvement. Oversizing the inverter or introducing redundancy into the inverter system is one option to improve reliability; however, often, this is not economical.

Abstract: This paper presents two short-circuit fault models of a hybrid excitation flux switching permanent magnet machine, i.e., excitation phase short-circuit and interturn short-circuit in excita- tion windings. Two-dimensional finite element (FE) method is used to calculate the major parameters, such as armature and excita- tion inductances, which are not only functions of rotor position, but also of armature and excitation currents. Moreover, in case of short-circuits, the variations of armature and excitation currents are often significant. This in turn leads to an important change in winding inductances. Therefore, in order to precisely predict machine performance under short-circuit conditions, the use of inductances versus rotor position and RMS currents is essential. With the obtained FE results, two MATLAB/Simulink-based mod- els are established. Then, the previously mentioned short-circuits have been studied and their influences on electromagnetic per- formances, such as armature and excitation currents, speed and torque, armature and excitation copper losses, stator and rotor core iron losses, as well as permanent magnet (PM) eddy current losses are analyzed. Experiments have been carried out to validate the simulations.

Abstract: International audience; Piezoelectric transformers have been used successfully in DC/AC or DC/DC converter. However, the use of piezoelectric transformers presents a major challenges for power electronic design: the capacitive nature of such devices makes their use delicate as the instantaneous power may be much greater than the average effective power. Due to this challenge, conventional drive circuits, especially inductor, become too bulky. This work describes a converter suitable to drive piezoelectric transformer with low inductor. The proposed converter is a DC/AC structure, which is capable of producing a unipolar square voltage. The circuit provides for recovery of the energy stored on the clamped capacitance back to the primary power supply when the transformer is de-energized. In our design, an auxiliary shunt circuits are connected to the input terminal. The proposed structure of both theoretical and experimental validations has demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed technique for recovery energy.

Abstract: International audience; Conventional methods for preparing ferrites are time-consuming processes, which require high temperatures in the order of 1200°C . The reactive spark plasma sintering method is a more rapid procedure involving lower temperatures. Different parameters of this newly introduced procedure should be optimized to obtain better magnetic properties over different frequency ranges. In this paper, emphasize is put on the milling conditions of nanoscale precursors oxides. The influence of sintering and milling conditions on some major properties of these very fine grained NiZnCu ferrites, such as permeability, permittivity, and saturation magnetization, is investigated. As the prospective applications of these materials are in high-frequency range, the dependence of magnetic losses on these properties is also investigated.
