Si revisamos los inventarios del clero, la nobleza y la monarquía, nos damos cuenta de la importancia que tuvieron los textiles en sus colecciones. Lo cual indica que se trata de bienes muy preciados y de gran valor. La gran demanda de los mismos dio lugar a numerosas manufacturas que competían por ser las más solicitadas, no sólo a nivel nacional, sino también internacional. Y, aunque no fue fácil hacer frente a las fábricas francesas y alguna que otra italiana, no faltaron los centros sederos españoles que consiguieron captar a la gran clientela del momento.
