Abstract

International audience; The Mozambique and Madagascar margins present major rivers that are responsible for the discharge of large amounts of terrestrial organic matter (OM) which can influence carbon cycling in marine environments. Therefore, the Mozambique channel represents a unique case to study the fate of the organic carbon in deepwater domains. Using a new and extensive data set of sedimentary OM collected from sediment traps, seafloor sediments and core sediments, we address the origin of the OM that is transported and deposited in the Mozambique Channel, its degradation state and preservation conditions. A Rock-Eval 6 survey allowed us to characterize the origin and amount of OM from shallow to deep-water turbidite systems, between 500 and 4400 m water depth. Rock-Eval 6 performed on suspended sediments within particle traps at 47 m above the seabed show that the OM is transported into the deep-water domain with relatively high TOC (between 1.5 and 2.5%). However, the OM is largely oxidized close to the water-sediment interface (Oxygen Index >300 mg CO 2 /g TOC). Seafloor sediments sampled to a maximum depth of 40 cm show lower TOC values compared to those collected from particle traps suggesting that the degradation of the OM is mainly active at the water-sediment interface. Small concentrations of OM are preserved within the recent sediments of the distal area of the Zambezi turbidite system below 2500 m water depth (TOC < 0.5%). Rock-Eval results show that core sediments from the Majunga slope (NW margin of Madagascar) and the Zambezi slope (Mozambique margin) contain the highest concentration of terrestrial OM (TOC between 1 and 2%). However, the OM within core sediments from the deep-water domain is largely oxidized and degraded, probably due to the conjugate effect of low sediment accumulation rates (SARs) and high permeabilities of the coarse-grained sediments. Consequently, the deep-water domain of the Mozambique Channel does not seem to be an important sink of terrestrial OM. This process is reinforced by important bottom water currents which induce the remobilization and transport of seafloor sediments that lead to higher oxygen exposure time in the uppermost centimeters of sediments.

Abstract

International audience; The NW Madagascar continental margin receives high loads of terrigenous particulate organic matter during the wet season and especially linked to extreme events, originating from two major rivers, the Betsiboka and the Mahavavy Rivers. This particulate matter contains a high content of iron minerals from the weathering of red ferruginous/ferralitic soils of Madagascar. The presence of pockmarks, i.e. gas or fluid expulsion features on the continental slope, testifies to past/present methane migration through the sedimentary column, associated with early diagenetic processes. This study globally aims at deciphering the interactions between episodic sedimentation and geochemical processes influenced by fluids upward migration, using a sediment trap mooring and interface sediment cores at two sites on the continental slope. The present-day sedimentation along this margin undergoes two patterns. During the wet season, high continental fluxes generally result in an increase in particle fluxes on the slope. Longshore currents may deflect river plumes alongslope resulting in some periods of low particle flux on the slope during the wet season. During the dry season, the particles collected in the water column are probably originated from sediment remobilization from the shelf and slope. The observed progradation of the Mahavavy River delta and prodelta between 1984 and 2016 argues for an increase in temporary connections of the river with the canyon head during extreme events, inducing pulsed sedimentation offshore. This pulsed sedimentation could be responsible for enhancing pyritization on surface sediments, due to higher inputs of terrigenous organic matter and iron oxides. Finally, methane upward migration also influences the pyritization process through anaerobic oxidation of methane using sulfate as an electron acceptor and methanotrophs associated with this reaction significantly impact the δ13C of organic carbon towards more negative values.

Abstract

Organic matter (OM) transfer from the continent to the ocean occurs across margins which constitute a major area of OM recycling and burial. The lobe complex of the Congo deep-sea fan is connected to the river mouth by a canyon and alimented by recurrent turbidity currents, containing a large proportion of labile terrigenous OM and producing high sedimentation rates. These inputs support the development of ecosystems harboring rich assemblages of vesicomyid bivalves and bacterial mats, called Habitats. Here, we present O2 microprofiles and diffusive oxygen uptake rates (DOUs) obtained during the CONGOLOBE project at six sites of this active lobe complex by in situ and on-board methods based on micro-electrode profiling. The dataset is used to determine remineralization rates and study the biogeochemical dynamics of different ecosystems of the lobe area, in order to compare levee and background sediments to the Habitats developed on the flanks of the main turbiditic channel. Levee and background sediments are characterized by significantly higher DOUs than abyssal sediments at 5000 m meters depth (2–5 mmol O2 m−2 d−1 versus 1.5–2.5 mmol O2 m−2 d−1) and the Habitats are hotspots of OM remineralization with DOU values ranging between 8 and 40 mmol O2 m−2 d−1. By comparing sites near the active channel to a site located 50 km away, we show that the lobe connection to the main turbiditic channel is vital to the dense benthic communities.

Abstract

International audience; Carbon and silicon cycles at the Earth surface are linked to long-term variations of atmospheric CO2 and oceanic primary production. In these cycles, the river-sea interface is considered a biogeochemical hotspot, and deltas presently receive and preserve a major fraction of riverine particles in shallow water sediments. In contrast, periods of glacial maximum lowstand were characterized by massive exports of sediments to the deep-sea via submarine canyons and accumulation in deep-sea fans. Here, we calculate present-day mass balances for organic carbon (OC) and amorphous silica (aSi) in the terminal lobe complex of the Congo River deep-sea fan as an analogue for glacial periods. We show that this lobe complex constitutes a megasink with the current accumulation of 18 and 35% of the OC and aSi river input, respectively. This increases the estimates of organic carbon burial by 19% in the South Atlantic Ocean in a zone representing less than 0.01% of the basin. These megasinks might have played a role in carbon trapping in oceanic sediments during glacial times.

Abstract

Floods carry sediments to river deltas and the coastal zone, but little is known about the geochemical evolution of this particulate material deposited over a short period of time. Here, we studied two recent contrasting flood deposits in the Rhone River prodelta area (northwestern Mediterranean Sea). We monitored the porewater and solid-phase chemistry over periods ranging from a few days to 6 months after deposition. Non-steady state diagenetic processes associated with episodic deposition promote a wide spectrum of transient redox conditions in the shallow prodelta region of the Rhone. Specific attributes of diagenetic responses depend on the sources of flood material and scale (thickness) of deposition. The first flood unit of 20–30 cm was composed of light gray mud, poor in organic carbon and rich in reactive manganese oxides. The short-term responses of early diagenetic processes contrasted with a rapid consumption of O2 and NO3- over a few hours just after the deposition event, accompanied by a slower build-up of Mn2+ concentration, and a lagged response in Fe2+ concentration over a few days or weeks. This difference was due to the redox capacity of the sediment, evolving from oxidized, during the flood layer deposition, to more reducing conditions, after a few days or weeks, allowing Fe2+ to build up and remain in solution. Sulfate reduction may have started within a few days within the flood deposit and was greatly enhanced just below the former redox front due to a fresh input of organic matter (OM). This large production of H2S probably led to the precipitation of sulfide minerals in close vicinity to the former redox front, limiting the accumulation of Fe2+ and H2S. The unit was sampled repeatedly three times during the six months following the flood event, and showed that manganese oxides were reduced at a rate of 1.8 mmol m−2 d−1, whereas the iron oxide concentration did not vary substantially. The second flood unit was composed of darker sediment, rich in organic carbon and reactive manganese oxides. The first step of OM degradation was enhanced within this dark deposit with a high release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). A peak in Mn2+ concentration was also measured in association with the peak in reactive manganese oxides, also showing the rapid reduction of manganese after an input of fresh reactive oxides, and its potential increased release into the water column. Finally, a peak in nitrate concentration appeared in the sediment porewater within this anoxic organic/manganese-rich layer, likely resulting from the anaerobic oxidation of ammonium by manganese oxides.

Abstract

The presently active region of the Congo deep-sea fan (around 330,000 km(2)), called the terminal lobes or lobe complex, covers an area of 2500 km(2) at 4700-5100 m water depth and 750-800 km offshore. It is a unique sedimentary area in the world ocean fed by a submarine canyon and a channel-levee system which presently deliver large amounts of organic carbon originating from the Congo River by turbidity currents. This particularity is due to the deep incision of the shelf by the Congo canyon, up to 30 km into the estuary, which funnels the Congo River sediments into the deep-sea. The connection between the river and the canyon is unique for major world rivers. In 2011, two cruises (WACS leg 2 and Congolobe) were conducted to simultaneously investigate the geology, organic and inorganic geochemistry, and micro- and macro-biology of the terminal lobes of the Congo deep-sea fan. Using this multidisciplinary approach, the morpho-sedimentary features of the lobes were characterized along with the origin and reactivity of organic matter, the recycling and burial of biogenic compounds, the diversity and function of bacterial and archaeal communities within the sediment, and the biodiversity and functioning of the faunal assemblages on the seafloor. Six different sites were selected for this study: Four distributed along the active channel from the lobe complex entrance to the outer rim of the sediment deposition zone, and two positioned cross-axis and at increasing distance from the active channel, thus providing a gradient in turbidite particle delivery and sediment age. This paper aims to provide the general context of this multidisciplinary study. It describes the general features of the site and the overall sampling strategy and provides the initial habitat observations to guide the other in-depth investigations presented in this special issue. Detailed bathymetry of each sampling site using 0.1-1 m resolution multibeam obtained with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) shows progressive widening and smoothing of the channel-levees with increasing depth and reveals a complex morphology with channel bifurcations, erosional features and massive deposits. Dense ecosystems surveyed in the study area gather high density clusters of two large-sized species of symbiotic Vesicomyidae bivalves and microbial mats. These assemblages, which are rarely observed in sedimentary zones, resemble those based on chemosynthesis at cold-seep sites, such as the active pockmarks encountered along the Congo margin, and share with these sites the dominant vesicomyid species Christineconcha regab. Sedimentation rates estimated in the lobe complex range between 0.5 and 10 cm yr(-1), which is 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than values generally encountered at abyssal depths. The bathymetry, faunal assemblages and sedimentation rates make the Congo lobe complex a highly peculiar deep-sea habitat driven by high inputs of terrigenous material delivered by the Congo channel-levee system. Abstract

Geochemical profiles (SO 4 2- , H 2 S, CH 4 , δ 13 CH 4 ) and phylogenetic diversity of Archaea and Bacteria from two oceanographic cruises dedicated to the lobes sediments of the Congo deep-sea fan are presented in this paper. In this area, organic-rich turbidites reach 5000 m and allow the establishment of patchy cold-seep-like habitats including microbial mats, reduced sediments, and vesicomyid bivalves assemblages. These bivalves live in endosymbiosis with sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and use sulfides to perform chemosynthesis. In these habitats, unlike classical abyssal sediments, anoxic processes are dominant. Total oxygen uptake fluxes and methane fluxes measured with benthic chambers are in the same range as those of active cold-seep environments, and oxygen is mainly used for reoxidation of reduced compounds, especially in bacterial mats and reduced sediments. High concentrations of methane and sulfate co-exist in the upper 20 cm of sediments, and evidence indicates that sulfate-reducing microorganisms and methanogens co-occur in the shallow layers of these sediments. Simultaneously, anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) with sulfate as the electron acceptor is evidenced by the presence of ANMEs (ANaerobic MEthanotroph). Dissolved sulfide produced through the reduction of sulfate is reoxidized through several pathways depending on the habitat. These pathways include vesicomyid bivalves uptake (adults or juveniles in the bacterial mats habitats), reoxidation by oxygen or iron phases within the reduced sediment, or reoxidation by microbial mats. Sulfide uptake rates by vesicomyids measured in sulfide-rich sea water (90±18 mmol S m -2 d -1 ) were similar to sulfide production rates obtained by modelling the sulfate profile with different bioirrigation constants, highlighting the major control of vesicomyids on sulfur cycle in their habitats.

Abstract

WOS:000408783500011; International audience; Deep-sea fans are well known depot centers for organic carbon that should promote sulfate reduction. At the same time, the high rates of deposition of unconsolidated metal oxides from terrigenous origin may also promote metal-reducing microbial activity. To investigate the eventual coupling between the iron and sulfur cycles in these environments, shallow sediment cores ( \textless 50 cm) across various channels and levees in the Congo River deep-sea fan (similar to 5000 m) were profiled using a combination of geochemical methods. Interestingly, metal reduction dominated suboxic carbon remineralization processes in most of these sediments, while dissolved sulfide was absent. In some 'hotspot' patches, however, sulfate reduction produced large sulfide concentrations which supported chemosynthetic-based benthic megafauna. These environments were characterized by sharp geochemical boundaries compared to the iron-rich background environment, suggesting that FeS precipitation efficiently titrated iron and sulfide from the pore waters. A companion study demonstrated that methanogenesis was active in the deep sediment layers of these patchy ecosystems, suggesting that sulfate reduction was promoted by alternative anaerobic processes. These highly reduced habitats could be fueled by discrete, excess inputs of highly labile natural organic matter from Congo River turbidites or by exhumation of buried sulfide during channel flank erosion and slumping. Sulfidic conditions may be maintained by the mineralization of decomposition products from local benthic macrofauna or bacterial symbionts or by the production of more crystalline Fe(III) oxide phases that are less thermodynamically favorable than sulfate reduction in these bio-turbated sediments. Overall, the iron and sulfur biogeochemical cycling in this environment is unique and much more similar to a coastal ecosystem than a deep-sea environment.

Abstract

Understanding hydrogen dynamics in soil organic matter is important to predict the fate of 3H in terrestrial environments. One way to determine hydrogen fate and to point out processes is to examine the isotopic signature of the element in soil. However, the non-exchangeable hydrogen isotopic signal in soil is complex and depends on the fate of organic compounds and microbial biosyntheses that incorporate water-derived hydrogen. To decipher this complex system and to understand the close link between hydrogen and carbon cycles, we followed labeled hydrogen and labeled carbon throughout near-natural soil incubations. We performed incubation experiments with three labeling conditions: 1 – 13C2H double-labeled molecules in the presence of 1H2O; 2 – 13C-labeled molecules in the presence of 2H2O; 3 – no molecule addition in the presence of 2H2O. The preservation of substrate-derived hydrogen after 1 year of incubation (ca. 5 % in most cases) was lower than the preservation of substrate-derived carbon (30 % in average). We highlighted that 70 % of the C–H bonds are broken during the degradation of the molecule, which permits the exchange with water hydrogen. Added molecules are used more for trophic resources. The isotopic composition of the non-exchangeable hydrogen was mainly driven by the incorporation of water hydrogen during microbial biosynthesis. It is linearly correlated with the amount of carbon that is degraded in the soil. The quantitative incorporation of water hydrogen in bulk material and lipids demonstrates that non-exchangeable hydrogen exists in both organic and mineral-bound forms. The proportion of the latter depends on soil type and minerals. This experiment quantified the processes affecting the isotopic composition of non-exchangeable hydrogen, and the results can be used to predict the fate of tritium in the ecosystem or the water deuterium signature in organic matter.

Abstract

Measurements of diffusive (DOU) and total (TOU) sediment oxygen uptakes, oxygen penetration depth, porosity, OC, TN, carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid, chlorophyll a and pheophytin a concentrations were assessed in surface sediments at 9 stations located in the Rhone River prodelta and the adjacent continental shelf during April 2007 (a period characterized by low flow and discharge regimes). Our results show that sedimentary organics in the Rhone River prodelta were mainly fueled by a single source of OM, namely continental inputs. Those inputs were relatively labile and decreased following an inshore–offshore gradient. The descriptors of sedimentary organics mostly resulted from dilution and degradation processes affecting OM during its transfer from the mouth of the Rhone River. TOU/DOU ratios were close to one, with a slight increase at offshore stations. This is coherent with the limitation of bioirrigation in response to organic enrichment. DOU correlated best with bulk quantitative descriptors of sedimentary organics, which probably resulted from the overall correlation between all biochemical descriptors linked with the predominance of a single source of organic matter in the whole studied area.
