Increasing evidence indicates that voluntary actions can modulate the subjective time experience of its outcomes to optimize dynamic interaction with the external environment. In the present study, using a temporal reproduction task where participants reproduced the duration of an auditory stimulus to which they were previously exposed by performing different types of voluntary action, we examined how the subjective time experience of action outcomes changed with voluntary action types. Two experiments revealed that the subjective time experience of action outcomes was compressed, compared with physical time, if the action was performed continuously (Experiment 1), possibly enhancing the experience of controlling the action outcome, or if the action was added an extra task-unrelated continuous action (Experiment 2), possibly reflecting different underlying mechanisms from subjective time compression induced by the task-related continuous action. The majority of prior studies have focused on the subjective time experience of action outcomes when actions were performed voluntarily or not, and no previous study has examined the effects of differences in voluntary action types on the subjective time experience of action outcomes. These findings may be useful in situations in which people wish to intentionally compress their own time experience of daily events through their voluntary actions.

Time—whether objective (“clock”) time or the subjective experience of time—is essential for understanding how individuals, teams, and organizations evolve, grow, learn, and change. Yet most management research and literature reviews typically emphasize objective time to the exclusion of subjective time. Our review focuses on this lesser studied “other” time, beginning with a review of how seminal time articles have historically conceptualized subjective time. From this initial review, we offer an integrative and multilevel definition of subjective time as the experience of the past, present, and future, which occurs as individuals and collectives mentally travel through, perceive, and interpret time. Then, using this new definition to frame the remainder of the review, we examine the literature employing subjective time concepts to address three key questions: what is subjective time, how does it operate, and why does it matter? Our analysis provides new ways for understanding subjective time and the important role it plays in organizational phenomena. We conclude by challenging management scholars to consider three priorities for future research: the fundamental relationship between subjective time and meaning, the unclear nature of event time, and the ways in which objective time is dependent upon subjective time.

Time pressure of parents has become an important policy agenda in many contemporary societies. This study aims to examine the association between parental childcare time and subjective time pressure (feeling rushed) by taking into account different types of diurnal activity patterns. From the background of time fragmentation as a structural source of time pressure we introduce two specific types of diurnal time use activities, namely activity resumption and activity switching. As activity resumption denotes that the same kind of activity is repeatedly shown over the day, activity switching indicates the diurnal substantive variety of activities. Our research question is aimed a examining if these activity patterns covariate with parental childcare time use and to what extent they add are connected with subjective time pressure. Analyzing the original timeline raw data of 6,812 diary entries from the 2014 Korean Time Use Study (KTUS) we focused on working parents with children aged 18 or younger. Overall, we found that activity resumption is positively related to subjective time pressure, while activity switching negatively correlates with subjective time pressure. While we did not find a significant effect of time spent for childcare on feeling rushed, we found that time use for childcare is negatively correlated with activity resumption, but positively with activity switching intensity. Having young children compared to having teenagers in the family significantly goes with more feeling rushed, while having young children means less activity switching and less activity resumption. Finally, our results point to a significant parents’ gender differentiation of the covariation of subjective time pressure, diurnal activity change pattern and child care time use.

Time is as pervasive as it is elusive to study, and how the brain keeps track of millisecond time is still unclear. Here we addressed the mechanisms underlying duration perception by looking for a neural signature of subjective time distortion induced by motion adaptation. We recorded electroencephalographic signals in human participants while they were asked to discriminate the duration of visual stimuli after different types of translational motion adaptation. Our results show that perceived duration can be predicted by the amplitude of the N200 event-related potential evoked by the adapted stimulus. Moreover, we show that the distortion of subjective time can be predicted by the activity in the Beta band frequency spectrum, at the offset of the adaptor and during the presentation of the subsequent adapted stimulus. Both effects were observed from posterior electrodes contralateral to the adapted stimulus. Overall, our findings suggest that local and low-level perceptual processes are involved in generating a subjective sense of time.

Human density in different locations influences time estimation. In this article, we report three experiments investigating whether research in virtual reality (VR) environments would replicate this earlier finding. In our first experiment, 35 participants wore head-mounted VR displays and watched two videos showing a cityscape and a countryside. While watching each video, participants were asked to provide their perceptions of 30 seconds of time passage. Perceived time in the cityscape condition was longer than in the countryside condition. In our second experiment, 43 participants wore head-mounted VR displays and watched two videos showing a crowded and uncrowded Ikebukuro station. While watching these videos, participants were asked to provide their perceptions of 60 seconds of time passage. Perceived time in the crowded condition was longer relative to the uncrowded condition. In our third experiment, 21 participants wore head-mounted displays and watched two videos showing a crowded and uncrowded nature park. While watching the videos, participants were asked to provide their perceptions of 60 seconds of time passage. These repeated findings in VR environments of longer time perception in crowded versus uncrowded conditions were similar to data reported by who examined how location and human density affected subjective time in the real world. We discussed the implications of the VR tool in subjective time research and how people perceive and use VR environments in daily life.

Retinal input is frequently lost because of eye blinks, yet humans rarely notice these gaps in visual input. Although previous studies focused on the perceptual and neural correlates of diminished awareness to blinks, the impact of these correlates on the perceived time of concurrent events is unknown. Here, we investigated whether the subjective sense of time is altered by spontaneous blinks. We found that participants ( N = 22) significantly underestimated the duration of a visual stimulus when a spontaneous blink occurred during stimulus presentation and that this underestimation was correlated with the blink duration of individual participants. Importantly, the effect was not present when durations of an auditory stimulus were judged ( N = 23). The results point to a link between spontaneous blinks, previously demonstrated to induce activity suppression in the visual cortex, and a compression of subjective time. They suggest that ongoing encoding within modality-specific sensory cortices, independent of conscious awareness, informs the subjective sense of time.

In this paper, we describe the results of a single subject study attempting at a better understanding of the subjective state during musical improvisation. In a first experiment, we setup an ecological paradigm measuring EEG on a musician in free improvised concerts with an audience, followed by retrospective rating of the mental state of the improviser. We introduce Subjective Temporal Resolution (STR), a retrospective rating assessing the instantaneous quantization of subjective timing of the improviser. We identified high and low STR states using Hidden Markov Models in two performances, and were able to decode those states using supervised learning on instantaneous EEG power spectrum, showing increases in theta and alpha power with high STR values. In a second experiment, we found an increase of theta and beta power when experimentally manipulating STR in a musical improvisation imagery experiment. These results are interpreted with respect to previous research on flow state in creativity, as well as with the temporal processing literature. We suggest that a component of the subjective state of musical improvisation may be reflected in an underlying mechanism related to the subjective quantization of time. We also demonstrate the feasibility of single case studies of musical improvisation using brain activity measurements and retrospective reports, by obtaining consistent results across multiple sessions.

Do people with independent and interdependent self-construals perceive the amount of time that has passed differently? Results from four experiments (one preregistered) and three supplementary ones reveal that an independent (vs. interdependent) self-construal elongates time perception by making individuals feel that more time has passed than in reality. We find evidence that this is likely because an independent self-construal increases arousal that affects one’s “internal clock,” which determines the subjective passage of time. We find this effect with externally valid and practical measures, such as by measuring how long an online video feels, how long loading a webpage feels, and how long waiting in a line feels. Our research adds to an understanding of the consequences of self-construal for one of human beings’ most important judgments—time. We discuss the theoretical and practical considerations of our results as well as research limitations in closing.

Previous research has demonstrated that duration of implied motion (IM) was dilated, whereas hMT+ activity related to perceptual processes on IM stimuli could be modulated by their motion coherence. Based on these findings, the present study aimed to examine whether subjective time perception of IM stimuli would be influenced by varying coherence levels. A temporal bisection task was used to measure the subjective experience of time, in which photographic stimuli showing a human moving in four directions (left, right, toward, or away from the viewer) were presented as probe stimuli. The varying coherence of these IM stimuli was manipulated by changing the percentage of pictures implying movement in one direction. Participants were required to judge whether the duration of probe stimulus was more similar to the long or short pre-presented standard duration. As predicted, the point of subjective equality was significantly modulated by the varying coherence of the IM stimuli, but not for no-IM stimuli. This finding suggests that coherence level might be a key mediating factor for perceived duration of IM images, and top-down perceptual stream from inferred motion could influence subjective experience of time perception.

As for what is understood as an assyntagmatic film, we take into account the emergence of a “wild state” throught visual overprint, as established by Noguez (2010), and a subjective time, as proposed by Clerget (2001). It’s an opposition to what is called a syntagm on cinema by Metz (2010).

The role of ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in mental time travel toward the past and the future is debated. Here, patients with focal lesions to the vmPFC and brain-damaged and healthy controls mentally projected themselves to a past, present or future moment of subjective time (self-projection) and classified a series of events as past or future relative to the adopted temporal self-location (self-reference). We found that vmPFC patients were selectively impaired in projecting themselves to the future and in recognizing relative-future events. These findings indicate that vmPFC damage hinders the mental processing of and movement toward future events, pointing to a prominent, multifaceted role of vmPFC in future-oriented mental time travel.

Timing is an integral part of physical activities. Walking as a routine form of physical activity might affect interval timing primarily in two different ways within the pacemaker–accumulator timing-theoretic framework: (1) by increasing the speed of the pacemaker due to its physiological effects; (2) by decreasing attention to time and consequently slowing the rate of temporal integration by serving as a secondary task. In order to elucidate the effect of movement on subjective time, in two different experiments we employed a temporal reproduction task conducted on the treadmill under four different encoding–decoding conditions: (1) encoding and reproducing (decoding) the duration while standing (rest); (2) encoding the duration at rest and reproducing it while moving: (3) both encoding and reproducing the duration while moving; and (4) encoding the duration while moving and reproducing it at rest. In the first experiment, participants were tested either in the 4 or the 8 km/h movement condition, whereas in the second experiment a larger sample was tested only in the 4 km/h movement condition. Data were de-trended to control for long-term performance drifts. In Experiment 1, overall durations encoded at rest and reproduced during motion were under-reproduced whereas durations encoded during motion and reproduced at rest were over-reproduced only in the 8 km/h condition. In Experiment 2, the same results were observed in the 4 km/h condition with a larger sample size. These effects on timing behavior provide support for the clock speed-driven effect of movement and contradicts the predictions of attention-based mediation.

Subjective time progression has been shown to serve as a heuristic cue for evaluating stimuli, tasks and events. The subjective feeling that “time flies” is a characteristic feature of flow experience. In four experiments, we investigated whether and how subjective time progression, as operationalized by announcing either shorter or longer time intervals than the actual time during task completion, affects recalled flow and subsequent performance. In Study 1, we were able to show that subjectively accelerated time progression increases recalled flow. Studies 2, 3, and 4 tested our central hypothesis, according to which the experience that time flies while working on a task should lead to better performance in a subsequent similar task. This effect was found in all studies. Studies 3 and 4 further revealed that, as expected, the effect was mediated by recalled flow, while controlling for potential alternative mediators. The findings from Study 4 further indicate a spillover effect such that participants who recalled higher levels of flow as a result of our manipulation also experienced higher levels of flow in a subsequent task. The present research contributes to an integration of naive theories on subjective time progression, flow experience, and objective performance. The research provides preliminary evidence that recalled flow experience can be affected post hoc using time manipulation. These findings bear practical implications for applied pedagogical and organizational psychology.

Recently, increasing one-person households, especially in the young generation, is one of the most important issues reflecting changes in the Korean family and society. The purpose of this study is to examine gender differences in life time use of one-person households aged 25 to 39, comparing with husband-wife couples of the same ages, and to investigate the determinants of subjective time poverty. Data are from the 2014 Life Time Survey by Statistics Korea. The major results are as follows. First, gender differences in time use of single youths were found in home management hours on weekdays. Female one-person householders spent more time in home management than their male counterparts, while male one-person householders spent more time in home management than young husband-wife groups. In addition, a much larger gender difference was found between young husbands and wives. Second, different effects on the subjective time poverty were found in both the groups. Based on these results, the implications for several specialized education and social programs for male and female one-person householders used in the local healthy families support centers are provided.

We investigate the time allocations of children (10–17 years) in South Africa using nationally representative time-diary data. We show that racial variation in time allocations mirrors well-documented findings of racially differentiated schooling outcomes. African children spend significantly less time on learning activities than other children, particularly outside school hours. They also spend significantly more time on household and production work and on school-related travel. We use regression analysis to investigate whether these race differences persist among children in households with similar socio-economic characteristics; and we explore whether children’s subjective time evaluations reveal evidence of greater time pressure among African children.

Our prior experience heavily influences our subjective time. One of such phenomena is repetition compression, that is, repeated stimuli are perceived shorter than novel stimuli. However, most of the studies on repetition compression used identical stimuli, leaving the question whether similar repetition effects could take place in phonological and semantic level repetition. We used Chinese characters to manipulate different levels of repetition in a duration discrimination task. We replicated earlier findings that repetition of visual identical characters shortened the apparent duration and found the repetition compression was spatially independent. Phonological repetition also caused the duration compression though the effect was weaker than the visual repetition. However, we observed no duration compression during the semantic repetition. The results suggest that repetition compression is mediated by visual and phonological representation of a stimulus in an early stage in processing hierarchy. We explained our findings according to the framework of predictive coding.

Dans la plupart des disciplines, la nature du temps a suscité d’âpres débats entre les tenants d’un temps linéaire objectivé et les partisans d’un temps subjectivement perçu par les individus. De manière surprenante, l’économie est une des rares disciplines où la nature du temps n’a guère éveillé l’intérêt des chercheurs. Cela s’explique par l’omniprésence d’une hypothèse implicite que nous appelons « temps linéaire ». Cette hypothèse est, selon nous, source de blocages dans le développement de la théorie de la décision. Elle empêche d’une part de conférer à l’actualisation une base comportementale solide et restreint, d’autre part, la rationalité, incarnée par la cohérence temporelle, à l’actualisation exponentielle. Nous montrons que l’introduction d’un temps subjectivement perçu par les agents économiques, par l’intermédiaire d’un concept appelé « distance temporelle », permet de lever ces deux blocages et offre une interprétation nouvelle à un ensemble de situations de choix intertemporels. In most disciplines, the nature of time has been the cause of harsh debates between the partisans of objective linear time and those in favor of subjective time. In a surprising way, the nature of time has not much stimulated the interest of economists. This can be explained by the invariable use of a tacit assumption that we call “linear time”. According to us, “linear time” brings about a set of misunderstandings in the field of decision theory. First, “linear time” impedes the development of solid behavioral foundations for time discounting. Second, “linear time” leads to the common agreement that only exponential decision makers are time consistent. In this paper, we aim at removing such a misunderstanding by introducing subjective time. In particular, we substitute “linear time” by a more general assumption called “time distance”.

The present research examines how the subjective time of relational memories is linked to present relationship satisfaction. We tested the hypothesis that satisfied (but not dissatisfied) partners would keep happy relational events subjectively close in time and relegate transgressions to the subjectively distant past (regardless of when those events actually occurred). We found support for our predictions in the context of romantic relationships (Study 1) and with any type of close other (e.g., friends, family members; Study 2). To better understand the implications of the subjective distancing pattern among highly satisfied versus dissatisfied partners, we examined the role of perceptions of event importance. We found that highly satisfied partners’ adaptive pattern of distancing mediates their tendency to ascribe continued importance to past relationship glories, while dismissing earlier relational disappointments as unimportant (Study 2). We then examined the causal impact of subjective time on importance and on subsequent relationship satisfaction by manipulating both event valence and perceptions of subjective distance (Study 3). People were more satisfied when happy relational events felt close and unhappy ones felt distant. This work sheds light on a reciprocal process whereby highly satisfied partners navigate the temporal landscape of their relational histories by retaining and valuing happy memories and by discarding the relevance of painful ones, which then maintains or boosts subsequent relationship satisfaction.

Scholars have generally neglected the importance of the subjective aspects of time in the field of work stress. In this paper we analyze the joint effects of employee perceptions of subjective time and cultural, organizational, individual, and situational factors on employee experiences of stress. By explicitly considering the role of subjective time in stress research, we develop several propositions and discuss recommendations for future research. We discuss implications for organizational practice in reducing stress, revolving around the manipulation and experience of time.

Although many studies have reported a distortion of subjective (internal) time during preparation and execution of actions, it is highly controversial whether actions cause a dilation or compression of time. In the present study, we tested a hypothesis that the previous controversy (dilation vs. compression) partly resulted from a mixture of two types of sensory inputs on which a time length was estimated; some studies asked subjects to measure the time of presentation for a single continuous stimulus (stimulus period, e.g. the duration of a long-lasting visual stimulus on a monitor) while others required estimation of a period without continuous stimulations (no-stimulus period, e.g. an inter-stimulus interval between two flashes). Results of our five experiments supported this hypothesis, showing that action preparation induced a dilation of a stimulus period, whereas a no-stimulus period was not subject to this dilation and sometimes can be compressed by action preparation. Those results provided a new insight into a previous view assuming a uniform dilation or compression of subjective time by actions. Our findings about the distinction between stimulus and no-stimulus periods also might contribute to a resolution of mixed results (action-induced dilation vs. compression) in a previous literature.

Four experiments investigated the effect of pre-stimulus events on judgements of the subjective duration of tones that they preceded. Experiments 1 to 4 used click trains, flickering squares, expanding circles, and white noise as pre-stimulus events and showed that (a) periodic clicks appeared to “speed up” the pacemaker of an internal clock but that the effect wore off over a click-free delay, (b) aperiodic click trains, and visual stimuli in the form of flickering squares and expanding circles, also produced similar increases in estimated tone duration, as did white noise, although its effect was weaker. A fifth experiment examined the effects of periodic flicker on reaction time and showed that, as with periodic clicks in a previous experiment, reaction times were shorter when preceded by flicker than without.

Research on interval timing has provided significant insight into how intervals are perceived and produced in well-controlled laboratory settings. However, for timing theories to explain real-world performance, it is imperative that they provide better quantitative predictions and be applicable to timing tasks that are relevant in ecologically valid settings.

In contrast to the intuitive and traditional assumption of a centralized and universal neural clock, many recent studies have provided evidence against this idea. Here, we investigated whether subjective duration is estimated by a mechanism that tracks the trajectory of a moving object. Such a mechanism would integrate over the velocity and the spatial distance the object traveled to derive its duration. We exposed observers to a moving object that covered either a small or large spatial distance. We found that subjective duration decreased after this exposure when intervals were tested that were defined by stimuli covering a large, but not by stimuli covering a small, spatial distance. We compared the effects of our velocity exposure to previously used adaptation to a drifting grating and found a dependence of spatial distance only for velocity exposure. The finding that temporal estimations decrease after exposure to fast-moving stimuli selectively at large distances suggests that subjective duration is derived from measurements of velocity and space.

Abstract. The articles in the present volume enhance the understanding of the role of perceived time in human development. Together, they point to the multifaceted nature of perceived future time and the associations different aspects of time have with goals, preferences, and well-being. Specifically, the articles showcase antecedents and consequences of perceived time left in life, consider ways to optimize measurement of future time horizons, and advance novel questions about the neural correlates of domain-specific aspects of subjective time. Findings are considered within the framework of socioemotional selectivity theory. Future directions for research on time horizons are discussed.

Travel time is the main factor affecting individuals’ travel-related decisions. Understanding the way people experience and estimate travel time is critical for a better insight regarding travel behavior and consequently for planning transport projects and guiding new policies. Whereas most travel-demand models employ objective time data, the use of subjective time data was proposed to improve model estimation. This study draws on fundamental as well as on recent psychological theories, investigating the discrepancy between subjective and objective travel times. According to one of these theories, the return trip effect, travelers tend to report shorter travel times for return trips compared to outbound trips. In a questionnaire, 174 respondents provided pre-trip time estimates. One group estimated travel times from home to local shopping areas, whereas a second group estimated times of the reverse trips. For comparison, objective times were obtained from Waze, a navigation application providing real-time information. Whereas 48% of time estimates were found accurate, over-estimates were 2.5 times more frequent than under-estimates. A return trip effect was found only for trips to/from poorly familiar shopping areas, highlighting the role of destination familiarity. Interestingly, respondents accurately estimated toll-trips but over-estimated non-toll trips. Presumably, merely thinking about paying the toll led individuals to form expectations of travel time savings in exchange. Linear and non-linear regression models for predicting subjective estimates revealed significant effects for trip frequency, trip direction, destination familiarity, toll-road and gender, amongst other variables. The results offer a fertile basis for incorporating subjective time in demand models.

Every close relationship has a history, but how people manage their relational past varies and can have important implications in the present. The current research investigated the role of subjective representation of time: How feeling subjectively close (vs. distant) to a past relational transgression (vs. kind act) predicted “kitchen thinking”—the tendency to bring to mind relational past memories in new, unrelated contexts. We explored the role of attachment anxiety as a predictor of subjective time perception and kitchen thinking. We found support for our hypothesis that when negative memories felt subjectively closer relative to positive memories, people were more likely to kitchen think (Studies 1-3). Kitchen thinking, in turn, predicted negative relationship outcomes (Study 4). Furthermore, people high (vs. low) in attachment anxiety were less likely to perceive the timing of their relational memories adaptively, accounting for more kitchen thinking and in turn, maladaptive relational outcomes.

Time is a universal psychological dimension, but time perception has often been studied and discussed in relative isolation. Increasingly, researchers are searching for unifying principles and integrated models that link time perception to other domains. In this review, we survey the links between temporal cognition and other psychological processes. Specifically, we describe how subjective duration is affected by nontemporal stimulus properties (perception), the allocation of processing resources (attention), and past experience with the stimulus (memory). We show that many of these connections instantiate a "processing principle," according to which perceived time is positively related to perceptual vividity and the ease of extracting information from the stimulus. This empirical generalization generates testable predictions and provides a starting-point for integrated theoretical frameworks. By outlining some of the links between temporal cognition and other domains, and by providing a unifying principle for understanding these effects, we hope to encourage time-perception researchers to situate their work within broader theoretical frameworks, and that researchers from other fields will be inspired to apply their insights, techniques, and theorizing to improve our understanding of the representation and judgment of time. Hiring household help could reduce housework time and alleviate subjective time pressure. Associations are assumed to be particularly apparent for women because they spend more time on housework than men. But empirical evidence on whether hiring help actually saves time or relieves time pressure is scant and inconclusive, chiefly because of data and methodological limitations. This study improves on earlier ones in that the authors examined panel data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey (n = 5,124 couples) that enable modeling techniques that take account of selection effects, possible reverse causality, and unobserved heterogeneity. Contrary to some earlier studies, the authors show that outsourcing does in fact reduce housework time, narrow gender gaps, and lower women's subjective time pressure. They conclude that domestic outsourcing may save time and reduce subjective pressure for some women, but one consequence may be increased inequality between women who can and cannot afford domestic help.

Episodic memory is typically thought of as the memory system that makes possible mental time travel through subjective time. This may serve an important function in allowing us to use recent dietary information to predict future food needs and integrate this information with current food availability to adapt motivation accordingly. Growing evidence has suggested that episodic memory influences and is influenced by obesity. However, there is limited available evidence on the characteristics of episodic memory for food and non-food cues in people with obesity. The present study attempts to address this association and apply an episodic memory task to evaluate item memory and source memory for food and non-food cues in females with obesity. Participants were 26 females with obesity and 30 females with healthy weight, who were undergraduate students aged 17–24 years. They completed the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire, hunger visual analog scale, fullness visual analog scale, desire-to-eat visual analog scale, and an episodic memory task including item memory and source memory. Results showed that the episodic memory patterns of females with and without obesity changed according to the type of stimuli. Specifically, females with obesity outperformed females with healthy weight in item memory for food cues, but showed deficits in item memory for non-food cues and source memory for both food and non-food cues. Taken together, based on the obesity and suboptimal food-related decision theoretical model, these findings are of great theoretical and clinical significance to explore episodic memory pattern differences between people with and without obesity.

When a voluntary action is followed by a sensory outcome, their timings are perceived to shift toward each other compared to when they were generated independently. Recent studies have tried to explain this temporal binding effect based on the cue integration theory, in which the timing of action and outcome are estimated as a precision-weighted average of their individual estimates, although distinct results were obtained between the binding of action and outcome. This study demonstrates that cue integration underlies both action and outcome bindings, using visual changes as action outcomes. Participants viewed a moving clock presented on a screen to report the onset time of their action or the feature changes of visual objects that were relevant or irrelevant to the clock movement. The results revealed that the precision of outcome timing judgment was different based on the object that underwent a feature change. Moreover, consistent with the theory's prediction, the perceptual shifts of action and outcome timings were larger and smaller, respectively, when the precision of outcome timing judgments was higher. These results suggest that cue integration serves as a common mechanism in action and outcome bindings.

Using a two-wave survey design, we examine the relationship between job characteristics, untapped potential, and work meaningfulness in a heterogeneous sample of 542 employees. We found that employees’ perceived amount of untapped potential mediates the effects of skill variety, autonomy, and job feedback on work meaningfulness. This mediated relationship was moderated by the valence employees attributed to their untapped potential. Moreover, decreases in the perceived amount of untapped potential over time were related to increases in perceived work meaningfulness. Our research shows that work that allows employees to move beyond the here-and-now by providing opportunities to realize future work selves is experienced as particularly meaningful. International audience; For decades, researchers in the behavioral sciences have studied how humans judge time accurately. Now they are looking more closely at the conditions in which they fail to do so and why, with the aim of testing the limits of a potential internal timing system (i.e., an internal clock). Recent behavioral studies have thus focused on time distortions, in particular those caused by emotion. They have also begun to examine the awareness of the passage of time and its relation with the perception of durations in different temporal ranges, from a few seconds to several minutes.

International audience; This article provides a synthesis of the research on consumer time. Based on a systematic review of studies from the past 25 years, it offers an original interpretative framework by grouping consumer time into two categories. In the first, the studies on ‘resource time’ reveal that time is perceived differently according to situational and individual antecedents. In the second, the research on ‘personality trait time’ presents time from a global (where time is perceived as a whole), comparative (comparing several time zones) or selective (positioned in a precise time zone) perspective, which is characterised according to the depth to which the time variable is anchored in an individual’s personality. Although this categorisation sheds light on the concept of consumer time, it was not possible to establish a unified theoretical anchoring. This research argues in favour of decompartmentalising the different approaches and methodologies.

A number of striking temporal asymmetries have been observed in the way that adults think about the past and the future: experiences in the future tend to be more valued than those in the past, feel closer in subjective time, and elicit stronger emotions. Three studies explored the development of these temporal asymmetries for the first time with children and adolescents. Evidence of past/future asymmetry in subjective time emerged from 4 to 5 years of age. Evidence of past/future asymmetry in emotion was clearly observable from 6 to 7 years of age. Evidence of past/future asymmetry in value emerged latest in development and was uncorrelated with judgments of emotion and subjective distance at all ages. It is well known that subjective time perception can be modified by the emotional experience related to a specific event, by pharmaceutical compounds or by sensory stimuli. As for the latter, visual and auditory stimuli have been widely studied compared to tactile ones. Two experiments were conducted using different vibratory frequencies to stimulate participants who were asked to reproduce stimulus duration. Experiment 1 compared differences in reproduced times for 8-s stimuli ranging between 0.5 and 6 Hz in 100 participants who performed a time reproduction task with the stimulus present or absent during the reproduction. The task was done under prospective and retrospective paradigms. Experiment 2 assessed differences in reproduced times by 80 participants under vibrotactile stimulation of two frequencies simultaneously delivered to each hand, frequencies with specific proportions of 0.5 and 0.75 times the standard frequency for two groups of standard frequency (2 or 12 Hz). Reproduced times in Experiment 1 did not show significant differences among frequencies. Significant differences were found for the absence/presence condition, solely, in prospective tasks, where estimations were longer in the absence of the vibrotactile stimulus. Significant differences were found in Experiment 2 for reproduced time by participants between groups of standard frequency. Data analysis suggests the need to improve the understanding of the subjective time perception processes for higher frequencies considering the intensity modulation based on the amplitude and frequency relation. Results open the possibility of designing new protocols in the study of time perception and other cognitive functions.

Repeated stimuli typically have shorter apparent duration than novel stimuli. Most explanations for this effect have attributed it to the repeated stimuli being more expected or predictable than the novel items, but an emerging body of work suggests that repetition and expectation exert distinct effects on time perception. The present experiment replicated a recent study in which the probability of repetition was varied between blocks of trials. As in the previous work, the repetition effect was smaller when repeats were common (and therefore more expected) than when they were rare. These results add to growing evidence that, contrary to traditional accounts, expectation increases apparent duration whereas repetition compresses subjective time, perhaps via a low-level process like adaptation. These opposing processes can be seen as instances of a more general "processing principle," according to which subjective time is a function of the perceptual strength of the stimulus representation, and therefore depends on a confluence of "bottom-up" and "top-down" variables.

Grandparents’ regular care for children while parents work has been mostly studied from the parental perspective. This paper focuses on the grandparents. Using the Australian Bureau of Statistics Time Use Survey 2006 (N = 7672) we investigate regular-caring grandparents’ demographic characteristics, which childcare activities they undertake, and how regular childcare provision relates to their time in other activities, subjective time pressure and satisfaction. Results indicate the correlates and nature of regular care differ by gender. Regular and non-regular-caring grandmothers’ relative time allocation to different childcare tasks barely differs, while regular-caring grandfathers’ care includes a much higher proportion of active care and travel than non-regular-caring grandfathers’. Mahr & Csibra (M&C) propose that episodic memory evolved to support epistemic authority in social communication. We argue for a more parsimonious interpretation whereby episodic memory subserves a broader preparatory function for both social and non-social behavior. We conclude by highlighting that functional accounts of episodic memory may need to consider the complex interrelations between self and subjective time.

The physical properties of events are known to modulate perceived time. This study tested the effect of different quantitative (walking speed) and qualitative (walking-forward vs. walking-backward) features of observed motion on time perception in three complementary experiments. Participants were tested in the temporal discrimination (bisection) task, in which they were asked to categorize durations of walking animations as "short" or "long." We predicted the faster observed walking to speed up temporal integration and thereby to shift the point of subjective equality leftward, and this effect to increase monotonically with increasing walking speed. To this end, we tested participants with two different ranges of walking speeds in Experiment 1 and 2 and observed a parametric effect of walking speed on perceived time irrespective of the direction of walking (forward vs. rewound forward walking). Experiment 3 contained a more plausible backward walking animation compared to the rewound walking animation used in Experiments 1 and 2 (as validated based on independent subjective ratings). The effect of walking-speed and the lack of the effect of walking direction on perceived time were replicated in Experiment 3. Background and objectives Disturbance of subjective time experience in PTSD has not heretofore constituted a subject of focused empirical research, in spite of previous theoretical insights concerning the phenomenological importance of subjective time distortions in PTSD. Aim of the study was confirming the presumption that an alteration in subjective time experience is an essential feature of PTSD. Methods Sets of instruments for diagnostic assessment of PTSD and other psychiatric disorders, and for assessing subjective time experience, have been used to investigate the differences between the subjects with PTSD (n = 58), subjects with other psychiatric disorders (n = 34) and healthy participants (n = 135). Results On average, subjects with PTSD differ significantly from the remaining two groups in succession and goal directedness aspects of subjective time experience, while PTSD group differs from healthy group in all aspects except future and past temporal extension. As expected, the covariates adjusted means on the Succession, Integration, Temporal Distinction and Goal Directedness scales are lowest in subjects with PTSD, higher in other disorders and highest among healthy individuals. Conclusions Most aspects of the subjective time experience in subjects with PTSD show significant alterations compared to healthy ones. Moreover, disturbed succession and goal directedness aspects are most specific because they also significantly differentiate the group with PTSD from the group of those with other disorders. Increased intensity of PTSD symptoms is associated with stronger alteration of time experience. There is a stronger association of temporal disorganization with avoidance/numbing and hyper-arousal than with intrusions.

The brain constantly adjusts perceived duration based on the recent event history. One such lab phenomenon is subjective time expansion induced in an oddball paradigm ("oddball chronostasis"), where the duration of a distinct item (oddball) appears subjectively longer when embedded in a series of other repeated items (standards). Three hypotheses have been separately proposed but it remains unresolved which or all of them are true: 1) attention prolongs oddball duration, 2) repetition suppression reduces standards duration, and 3) accumulative temporal preparation (anticipation) expedites the perceived item onset so as to lengthen its duration. We thus conducted critical systematic experiments to dissociate the relative contribution of all hypotheses, by orthogonally manipulating sequences types (repeated, ordered, or random) and target serial positions. Participants' task was to judge whether a target lasts shorter or longer than its reference. The main finding was that a random item sequence still elicited significant chronostasis even though each item was odd. That is, simply being a target draws top-down attention and induces chronostasis. In Experiments 1 (digits) and 2 (orientations), top-down attention explained about half of the effect while saliency/adaptation explained the other half. Additionally, for non-repeated (ordered and random) sequence types, a target with later serial position still elicited stronger chronostasis, favoring a temporal preparation over a repetition suppression account. By contrast, in Experiment 3 (colors), top-down attention was likely the sole factor. Consequently, top-down attention is necessary and sometimes sufficient to explain oddball chronostasis; saliency/adaptation and temporal preparation are contingent factors. These critical boundary conditions revealed in our study serve as quantitative constraints for neural models of duration perception.

We have all experienced that time seems stretched during unpleasant situations. While there is evidence of subjective time overestimation when perceiving external unpleasant stimuli, no study has measured the dilation of time when individuals experience an unpleasant situation in their own body. Here we measured the time dilation induced by a painful homeostatic deviance using temporal bisection task. We show that being in pain leads to an expansion of subjective time whereby a stronger increase in pain perception relative to non-painful stimulation leads to a stronger time-estimate distortion. Neurophysiological studies suggest that time estimation and the perception of self might share a common neural substrate. We propose that, along with bodily arousal and attentional capture, the enhancement of self-awareness may be critical to support dilated subjective time when experiencing pain. As other homeostatic deviances, pain may induce a focus on ourselves contributing to the impression that “time stands still”.

Magnitudes or quantities of the different dimensions that define a stimulus (e.g., space, speed or numerosity) influence the perceived duration of that stimulus, a phenomenon known as (temporal) interference effects. This complicates studying the neurobiological foundation of the perception of time, as any signatures of temporal processing are tainted by interfering dimensions. In earlier work, in which judgements on either time or numerosity were made while EEG was recorded, we used Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) to estimate, for each participant separately, the influence of temporal and numerical information on making duration or numerosity judgements. We found large individual differences in the estimated magnitudes, but ML-estimates allowed us to partial out interference effects. However, for such analyses, it is essential that estimates are meaningful and stable. Therefore, in the current study, we examined the reliability of the MLE procedure by comparing the interference magnitudes estimated in two sessions, spread a week apart. In addition to the standard paradigm, we also presented task variants in which the interfering dimension was manipulated, to assess which aspects of the numerosity dimension exert the largest influence on temporal processing. The results indicate that individual interference magnitudes are stable, both between sessions and over tasks. Further, the ML-estimates of the time-numerosity judgement tasks were predictive of performance in a standard temporaljudgement task. Thus, how much temporal information participants use in time estimations tasks seems to be a stable trait that can be captured with the MLE procedure. ML-estimates are, however, not predictive of performance in other interference-tasks, here operationalized by a numerical Stroop task. Taken together, the MLE procedure is a reliable tool to quantify individual differences in magnitude interference effects and can therefore reliably inform the analysis of neuroimaging data when contrasts are needed between the accumulationof a temporal and an interfering dimension.

Adaptation to delayed sensory feedback following an action produces a subjective time compression between the action and the feedback (temporal recalibration effect, TRE). TRE is important for sensory delay compensation to maintain a relationship between causally related events. It is unclear whether TRE is a sensory modality-specific phenomenon. In 3 experiments employing a sensorimotor synchronization task, we investigated this question using cathodal transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS). We found that cathodal tDCS over the visual cortex, and to a lesser extent over the auditory cortex, produced decreased visual TRE. However, both auditory and visual cortex tDCS did not produce any measurable effects on auditory TRE. Our study revealed different nature of TRE in auditory and visual domains. Visual-motor TRE, which is more variable than auditory TRE, is a sensory modality-specific phenomenon, modulated by the auditory cortex. The robustness of auditory-motor TRE, unaffected by tDCS, suggests the dominance of the auditory system in temporal processing, by providing a frame of reference in the realignment of sensorimotor timing signals.

Time perception in the range of milliseconds to a few seconds is essential for many important sensory and perceptual tasks including speech perception, motion perception, motor coordination, and cross-modal interaction. For the brain to be in synchrony with the environment, the physical differences in the speeds of light and sound, as well as stimuli from other modalities such as odors, must be processed and coordinated (Poppel and Bao, 2014; Bao et al., 2015). Time is a subjective feeling that is modulated by emotional states which trigger temporal distortions (temporal dilation vs. contraction; Wittmann, 2016), hence give rise to subjective time that may be different to event time as initially registered in the brain. Recent research suggests that time perception in a multisensory world is subject to prior task experience and shaped by (statistical) learning processes. Humans are active learners. That is, the engagement of the own body in a timing task within a perceptual-action loop will make a noticeable difference in timing performance, as compared to when humans only passively perceive the same perceptual scenario (Chen and Vroomen, 2013). This Research Topic of “Sub- and supra-second timing: brain, learning and development” has integrated 16 submissions of novel research on sub- and supra-timing. We have categorized the papers in this topic into the following four themes, from which we can deduce trends of research about multisensory timing in the sub- and supra-second range.

Background: The impression of time continuity is a pervasive and given property of our subjective life. However, it appears to be compromised in schizophrenia patients who experience what has been labeled “self-disturbances” (Ichstörungen). Both experimental and phenomenological approaches suggest that gaps in continuity of self-experience in schizophrenia patients reflect a disruption of temporal processing on different time scales. We hypothesized that the disruption of time continuity in schizophrenia patients involved an impairment in being able to make predictions about the immediate future, which includes timescales too brief to be experienced consciously.

International audience; The effect of an olfactory stimulation on the perception of time was investigated through two different experiments based on temporal bisection tasks. In experiment 1, the durations to be classified as either short or long were centered on 400 ms while in Experiment 2 there were centered on 2000 ms. The participants were different in the two experiments (36 subjects in each one). In each experiment, half of the subjects learnt the anchor durations when smelling an unpleasant odor (decanoic acid) and the other half when smelling no odor. After the learning phase, both groups were tested with and without odor. The results showed opposite effects depending on the duration range. The subjects underestimated the time in the presence of the unpleasant odor in the short duration range while they overestimated it in the long duration range. The results have been discussed in the framework of the pacemaker-counter clock model and a potential emotional effect induced by the odor on the subjective time perception has also been considered.

Subjective time refers to our living experience of time. We develop subjective timescapes i.e., spatial representations for time as experienced by story characters. Each such timescape describes how a character perceives and shapes story time. We show how these spatial constructions are compatible with relevant psychological and phenomenological studies on subjective time. Timescapes allow us to model characters as operating from particular temporal perspectives mediated by memory and anticipation at various points in a story and to provide geometric mappings of these concepts. We apply these ideas in a visualization environment for digital narrative plot structures.

When an individual estimates the temporal interval between a voluntary action and a consequent effect, their estimates are shorter than the real duration. This perceived shortening has been termed ‘intentional binding’, and is often due to a shift in the perception of a voluntary action forward towards the effect and a shift in the perception of the effect back towards the action. Despite much work on binding, there is virtually no consideration of individual/personality differences and how they affect it. Narcissism is a psychological trait associated with an inflated sense of self, and individuals higher in levels of subclinical narcissism tend to see themselves as highly effective agents. Conversely, lower levels of narcissism may be associated with a reduced sense of agency. In this exploratory study, to assess whether individuals with different scores on a narcissism scale are associated with differences in intentional binding, we compared perceived times of actions and effects (tones) between participants with high, middle, and low scores on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI). We hypothesized that participants with higher scores would show increased binding compared to participants with lower scores. We found that participants in our middle and high groups showed a similar degree of binding, which was significantly greater than the level of binding shown by participants with the lowest scores. To our knowledge, these results are the first to demonstrate that different scores on a personality scale are associated with changes in the phenomenological experience of action, and therefore underscore the importance of considering individual/personality differences in the study of volition. Our results also reinforce the notion that intentional binding is related to agency experience.
