It was aimed to simultaneously study standardized ileal digestible (SID) tryptophan (Trp) and lysine (Lys) for gilts. A digestibility assay was previously conducted to determine the SID amino acid in the basal diet (low levels of SID Trp and Lys). Sixty-four gilts (15.04 ± 1.44 kg) were allotted to 16 diets in a 4 × 4 factorial arrangement (1.55, 1.85, 2.15 and 2.45 g/kg SID Trp and 9.72, 11.12, 12.52 and 13.92 g/kg SID Lys) with four replicates per treatment. Performance, longissimus muscle (LM), backfat thickness (BF) and blood variables were evaluated. An interaction was observed for G:F, and by response surface model, the optimum Trp level was achieved at 2.15 g/kg (0.159 g/MJ of ME). A quadratic effect of Trp was observed on body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG); the daily feed intake increased linearly as Trp increased. The optimum Trp levels of 2.25 and 2.24 g/kg were estimated for BW and ADG, respectively. The BF increased with increasing levels of Trp. There was a quadratic and linear effect of Trp and Lys, respectively, on the LM, in which the optimum Trp level was determined as 2.05 g/kg in the diet. Plasma urea nitrogen decreased as Trp and Lys levels increased. Using estimates provided by response surface, maximized G:F ratio was obtained at 2.15 g SID Trp/kg of diet and at least 13.92 g SID Lys/kg of diet is necessary to optimize the G:F for 15–30 kg gilts, providing a Trp:Lys ratio of 15.4:100.

Corn is one of the primary ingredients in swine diets, but there is a variation in its chemical composition and metabolizable energy (ME) content. Therefore, faster methods are required that can determine more accurate ME values to improve piglet diets. This study determined and predicted the ME of corn from first and second harvests for piglets. Two experiments were conducted to determine the ME values for 18 corn batches, evaluating corn from first and second harvests. The corn batches were analysed to determine the concentration of dry matter (DM), starch (ST), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), ash, calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and gross energy (GE). To determine the ME values, 40 piglets were used in each experiment, grouped into a randomized block design with four replicates. The ME of the corn from the first and second crops ranged from 3281 to 3509 and from 3143 to 3652 kcal/kg on an as-fed basis, respectively, and the fitted equations to predict the ME presented a low R2. The best fit equation for predicting the ME of corn for piglets was determined to be ME= - 6306.15 + 400.652ADF + 117.286ST + 24924.7Ca + 2489.66P - 148.41CP (R2=0.44) for the first harvest; ME= -7560.08 + 2.66895GE - 120.69ADF (R2=0.48) for the second harvest; and ME= 2848.95 + 68.5714NDF + 161.938EE - 5563.5Ca - 1454.2P (R2=0.41) for the joint harvest.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of different levels of standardized ileal digestible (SID) methionine + cystine (Met+Cys) and vitamin B6 supplementation on the performance, blood variables, and gene expression of enzymes involved in methionine metabolism in female pigs between 75 and 100 kg. Fifty six female pigs were used (Talent × Topigs 20), averaging 75.06±1.68 kg in initial weight, allotted in a completely randomized block design arranged in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme, composed of two vitamin B6 supplementation levels (1.58 and 3.58 mg/kg) and four levels of SID Met+Cys (0.370, 0.470, 0.570, and 0.670%), with seven replicates and one animal per experimental unit. No interactions between vitamin B6 supplementation and SID Met+Cys levels were observed. The levels of SID Met+Cys and vitamin B6 supplementation did not affect animal performance. Triacylglycerols showed a quadratic response to the SID Met+Cys levels, in which the lowest plasma concentration was estimated as 0.575%. Treatments did not affect the expression of the methionine synthase and cystathionine-γ-lyase enzymes or serum homocysteine levels. The SID Met+Cys requirement for female pigs from 75 to 100 kg is equal to or lower than 10.60 g/day, which corresponds to the level of 0.370% Met+Cys in the diet and a relationship 0.48% with the SID lysine.

Two experiments were performed to determine the digestibility of diets with crude protein (CP) reduction supplemented with amino acids (18.15, 17.15, 16.15 and 15.15%) to growing pigs (30–50 kg), to assess the use of nutrients and account for the manure excretion, and to evaluate the performance, backfat thickness, Longissimus lumborum depth, and plasma urea, aiming to evaluate the environmental impact through life cycle assessment (LCA), for the first time in Brazil interacting experiments were developed to evaluate the CP reduction and LCA. The CP reduction resulted in greater daily weight gain (p = 0.011), final weight (p = 0.020), better use of N and P, through the greater N and P retained (p = 0.003 and p = 0.017, respectively). There was a linear reduction in acidification potential (p = 0.015), eutrophication potential (p = 0.001), and land occupation (p = 0.005) when dietary CP decreased from 18.15 to 15.15%. The reduction in CP and supplementation of amino acids in diets for growing pigs (30–50 kg) improved final and daily weight gain. Through LCA, and performance and metabolism data, it was concluded that for the acidification, eutrophication and land occupation categories, impacts were reduced as the protein concentration was reduced.

Tryptophan (Trp) is involved in regulation of animal behaviour, since it originates serotonin and melatonin, especially in low crude protein diets, and Trp metabolism requires B6 vitamin (B6) as enzymatic cofactor. The objective of this study was to feed low protein diets with different levels of standardized ileal digestible (SID) Trp and B6 for barrows and gilts (70–100 kg) and to measure day-night behaviour, performance and carcass traits. In experiment 1 (Exp. 1) sixty four barrows (initial BW = 70.77 ± 2.07 kg) were used, and in experiment 2 (Exp. 2) sixty four gilts (initial BW = 70.52 ± 2.95 kg) were used. In both experiments a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments was used: two B6 levels (1 and 5 mg kg −1 ) and four levels of SID Trp (Exp. 1: 0.130, 0.155, 0.180, 0.205%; and Exp. 2: 0.140, 0.167, 0.194, 0.221%). Day-night behaviour was recorded at the end of weeks 1, 2 and 3 (days 7, 14 and 21) during 24 h. Scan-sampling was used to determine time-budget behaviour. Growth performance and carcass traits were measured at the end of the experimental period, when animals reached about 100 kg BW (in average 26 days). In Exp. 1 (barrows), stationary behaviour in daytime period (from 6:00 h to 18:00 h) increased quadratically ( P = 0.005) as Trp content in diets increased from 0.130 to 0.165%, but it decreased until 0.205% of SID Trp. Interacting behaviour in night-time period (from 18:00 h to 6:00 h) was affected by B6 ( P = 0.031). Sleeping behaviour decreased linearly ( P = 0.003) as Trp content in diets increased from 0.130 to 0.205% and feeding behaviour showed quadratic response ( P = 0.008) to SID Trp (0.161%). In Exp. 2 (gilts) sleeping behaviour in daytime period decreased quadratically ( P = 0.001) as SID Trp content in diets increased from 0.140 to 0.179%, but it decreased until 0.221% of SID Trp. Feeding behaviour was affected by the interaction Trp × B6 ( P = 0.030) as supplementary B6 (5 mg kg −1 ) decreased visits to feeder up to 0.194% Trp content. Sleeping behaviour in night-time period was affected by the interaction Trp × B6 ( P = 0.030) once supplementary B6 (5 mg kg −1 ) markedly decreased time spent sleeping when compared to basal B6 (1 mg kg −1 ) as Trp levels increased in diets. Feeding behaviour responded quadratically ( P = 0.001) to Trp (0.173%). In both experiments performance variables and carcass traits were not different ( P > 0.05) neither for Trp nor B6. SID Trp levels from 0.130 to 0.205% (barrows) and 0.140 to 0.221% (gilts) even as B6 content (1 or 5 mg kg −1 ) in diets had no consistent effects on behaviour and did not alter performance of pigs.

Supplementary tryptophan in pig diets has shown improvement in carcass traits and pork quality by reducing the animals' response to stress at slaughter. Vitamin B6 could enhance this response since it acts as an enzymatic cofactor of many tryptophan pathways. The present experiment was designed to evaluate dietary vitamin B6 supplementation and tryptophan levels on carcass traits, organ weights, abdominal fat, and pork quality of 70–100 kg gilts. Sixty-four crossbred gilts (initial bodyweight (BW) 70.52 ± 2.95 kg) were distributed in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, consisting of two supplementary vitamin B6 levels (1 and 5 mg kg -1 ) and four dietary standardized ileal digestible (SID) tryptophan (Trp) levels (0.140%, 0.167%, 0.194%, and 0.221%). No significant interactions between the dietary SID Trp levels and B6 supplementation were observed on these variables. Vitamin B6 supplementation (5 mg kg -1 ) showed a minor reduction in meat pH measured 24 hours after slaughter and resulted in a ham yield higher than B6 basal level (1 mg kg -1 ). The lean meat yield increased linearly as the SID Trp levels increased in the diet. These findings suggested that vitamin B6 supplementation enhanced the pork quality and the increasing levels of SID tryptophan enhanced the lean meat yield of 70–100 kg gilts. The objective of this study was to evaluate the standardized ileal digestible (SID) leucine levels in low crude protein diets on Performance, backfat thickness, longissimus dorsi depth and biochemical blood parameters of starting pigs. A total of 50 pigs, with initial weight of 11.14±0.24 kg; were distributed in a randomized blocks design with five treatments (1.10; 1.25; 1.40; 1.55 and 1.70% SID leucine), five replicates and two animals per experimental unit, comprised for a barrow and a gilt. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) reduced (P=0.018) due to the increasing SID leucine levels, without affecting other growth performance parameters (final weight, average daily feed intake, average daily gain, backfat thickness, longissimus dorsi depth and lean meat percentage). There was a quadratic effect for plasma triglyceride (P=0.049) and plasma urea (P=0.001). The optimal SID leucine levels obtained for triglycerides and urea were 1.16% and 1.24%, respectively, by associating the quadratic model with the Linear Response Plateu. Low crude protein diets with SID leucine levels up to 1.70% improved the feed conversion with desired urea and triglycerides concentration in blood plasmas achieved at 1.16% and 1.24%, respectively. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi o de avaliar níveis de leucina digestível em dietas com baixa proteína bruta sobre o desempenho, espessura de toucinho, profundidade do músculo longissimus dorsi parâmetros sanguíneos de suínos na fase inicial. Foram utilizados 50 suínos mestiços (Landrace x Large white x Pietrain), com peso inicial de 11,14 ± 0,24 kg; distribuídos em um delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos (1,10; 1,25; 1,40; 1,55 e 1,70% de leucina digestível), cinco repetições e dois animais por unidade experimental, sendo um macho castrado e uma fêmea. A conversão alimentar reduziu (P=0,018) em função do aumento dos níveis de leucina digestível, sem influenciar os demais parâmetros de desempenho (peso final, consumo diário de ração, ganho de peso diário, espessura de toucinho, profundidade de lombo e porcentagem de carne magra). Com relação às variáveis plasmáticas foi observado efeito quadrático para a concentração de triglicerídeos (P=0,049) e ureia (P=0,001) em que associado ao platô do modelo Linear Response Platô (LRP) observou-se que o nível ótimo de leucina digestível para triglicerídeos e ureia foi de 1,16% e 1,24%, respectivamente. A menor concentração de ureia plasmática foi obtida ao nível de 1,24% de leucina digestível. Dietas com baixa proteína bruta e níveis de até 1,70% de leucina digestível melhoram a conversão alimentar dos suínos na fase inicial com a melhor concentração de ureia e triglicerídeos no plasma sanguíneo de 1.16% e 1.24%, respectivamente.
