Surgeons and surgery departments have shown resilience in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the situation stabilizes, it will be necessary to adopt new strategies to move into the transition phase and eventually the full recovery phase.

During the transition between warm-up and competition there is a change in core, muscle and (eventually) skin temperature that may affect swimming performance. We have aimed to assess skin temperature evolution during transition phases of different durations before a typical front crawl effort and to investigate its relationship with performance. Following a standardized warm-up, nine adolescent male swimmers performed three maximal randomized 100 m maximum front crawl trials after 10, 20 and 45 min transition phases. Skin temperature, performance (time, stroke frequency, length and index, and propelling efficiency), heart rate, lactate and perceived effort were assessed. Data showed a skin temperature log increase over time (R2 > 0.96, p < 0.01) without differences from the 15 min with the following instants. Performance and psychophysiological variables were similar between transition phases. However, skin temperature at the end of the transition periods, i.e., just before the 100 m trials, was lower in the 10 min than the 20 and 45 min transitions (32.0 ± 0.6 vs 33.0 ± 0.4 and 33.5 ± 0.5 ◦C, respectively). The main finding was that no relevant relationships were observed between pre-test skin temperature and performance times (|r| < 0.6, p > 0.05) for the studied transition phases. We have concluded that transitions longer than 10 min will not present thermal changes and that, within the physiologic limits studied, pre-exercise skin temperature does not influence swimming performance. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

HANT wires are available with different austenite finish temperatures. Objective > The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of two alignment sequences using thermally activated archwires with different austenite activation temperatures for the correction of mandibular anterior crowding. Material and methods > The following NiTi archwire sequence was used for both groups: 0.012 in (conventional NiTi), 0.018 in (heat-activated NiTi archwires), 0.016 x 0.022 in (heat-activated NiTi archwires) and 0.019 x 0.025 in (conventional NiTi). The conventional NiTi used for both groups belongs to the same commercial brand. Two different austenite activation temperatures (35 degrees C and 37 degrees C) were used for the heat-activated archwires. The primary outcome was the degree of crowding correction measured on study models. The secondary outcome was crowding survival time over a six-month period. This RTC included fifty-four patients that were randomly allocated to the two different archwire sequences. A Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the groups regarding crowding alleviation. A survival curve was created using the Kaplan-Meier method to illustrate the reduction of crowding over time. A Mantel-Cox log-rank test was used to compare survival times (until correction of crowding). Results > No differences in crowding alleviation were identified between both groups (log-rank test; P = 0.77). Conclusions > The two alignment sequences with different thermal activated archwires at 35 degrees C and 37 degrees C achieved similar clinical results during the correction of mandibular anterior crowding. The on-plane rotations of the inclined axle-chain system on the functional swing plane (FSP) can represent the angular motions of the golfer&ndash, club system closely. The purpose of this study was to identify key performance factors in golf through a comprehensive investigation of the association between the angular motion characteristics of the axle-chain system and clubhead speed in skilled golfers. Sixty-six male golfers (handicap &le, 3) performed full-effort shots in three club conditions: driver, 5-iron, and pitching wedge. Swing trials were captured with an optical motion capture system, and the hip/shoulder lines, upper lever, club, and wrist angular positions/velocities were calculated. Time, angular position, range of rotation, and peak angular velocity parameters were extracted and their correlation coefficients (Pearson and Spearman) to actual and normalized clubhead speeds were computed (p &lt, 0.05). Higher clubhead speed was associated with shorter downswing phases, larger rotation ranges (hip/shoulder lines, and upper lever), larger hip&ndash, shoulder separation at impact, delayed transitions (hip line and upper lever), faster rotations (backswing, downswing, and impact), and larger angular velocity losses (hip line and upper lever) with additional club- and body-specific correlations. Clubhead speed was not well associated with wrist cock angles/ranges, X-factors/stretches, and timings of the downswing peak.

The ongoing pandemic coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) remains a significant issue for global health, economics, and society. In order to balance epidemic control and economic recovery, many countries have successively announced the gradual relaxation of some lockdown restrictions. Hospitals and medical staff constitute the backbone in this war against COVID-19. In response to this serious situation, many hospitals went into emergency and impaired healthcare access to patients with conditions other than COVID-19. Therefore, gradually promoting hospital operations and functions back to the new normal is important, especially when this outbreak has been effectively controlled. In this study, we introduce existing and potential problems that could seriously affect people’s health. Additionally, we propose that an especial transition phase between the emergency and regular modes of hospitals can be well adapted to the current situation.

We sought to determine whether there are sex-based differences in the requirements for calories or protein for optimal growth during the transition phase (TP) when an extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infant, defined as a preterm infant with a birth weight of r = 0.22, p = 0.026) correlation of total calorie intake with a change in weight percentiles (wt.pc) for the whole group, but on sex-specific analysis, this correlation was more robust and significant only in girls (r = 0.28, p = 0.015). Protein intake did not correlate with the changes in wt.pc in either sex. Despite a similar intake of calories and protein during the TP, we found a significant decrease in wt.pc only in girls. More extensive studies are needed to understand the sex-based differences in caloric needs and metabolic rate in ELBW infants.

White lupin is a seed from the Lupinus albus species, and it presents physicochemical and physiological functional properties and is rich in fiber, protein, and lipids with a great application potential. Oil was extracted from the seeds, and its fatty acid profile indicates predominantly monounsaturated fatty acids (~65%). Thermo-gravimetry, derivative thermo-gravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the thermal behavior of the oil fraction at high temperatures, showing a good thermal stability between 222 and 230 °C and a large heat delivery at T = 400 °C. Additionally, DSC was performed from 25 to −60 °C, in which the crystallization behavior was verified. The kinetic behavior of the thermal decomposition was evaluated from several β values and mass samples (5 and 20 mg) under nitrogen and oxygen atmospheres to comparisons of the data. Variability in the efficacy, safety, and quality of probiotic formulations depends on many factors, including process conditions used by manufacturers. Developing reliable analytical tools is therefore essential to quickly monitor manufacturing differences in probiotic samples for their quality assessment. Background No reliable indicators of the transition to the progressive course in multiple sclerosis (MS) have been identified so far. The main clinical feature of the progressive phase of MS is usually impairment of walking. Magnetic resonance imaging and optical coherence tomography have emerged recently as promising tools to assess increasing neurodegeneration and axonal loss in disease progression in MS. Methods. Case report. Results. We report a case of progressive visual impairment as the dominant symptom in the transition to secondary progressive MS. Conclusions. Impairment of vision, together with walking and cognition, should be considered to better define the transition from relapsing/remitting to secondary-progressive MS.

Purpose: During the transition from ingesting milk to ingesting solid food, infants substantiate their eating habits. The present study focuses on this transition. Specifically, it aimed to explore first-time parents’ lived experiences of their infants’ transition from milk to solid foods.Method: The study is based on the descriptive phenomenological approach Reflective Lifeworld Research (RLR). Ten mothers and ten fathers were interviewed twice; when the infants were aged four to five months and again at seven to eight months of age. Data were analysed according to RLR principles.Results: The findings show that the transition from milk to solid food is a demanding in-between phase. The physically intimate feeding situation is replaced by unfamiliar situations in which parents and infant are physically separated and new types of food are introduced. The process of feeding requires parents’ full attention and sensitivity towards the infant’s reactions.Conclusion: The study highlights how shared parental experiences were reflected in frames for how a meal should normally proceed, including parents’ desire to create healthy eating habits and uphold harmony duringfamily mealsWe suggest for health professionals to present parents with a wider frame of normality, especially as concerns the concept of what constitutes “normal” eating patterns.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is characterized by a dysregulation of growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor I axis, as the consequence of a complex hypothalamic involvement. PWS' clinical picture seems to resemble the classic non-PWS GH deficiency (GHD), including short stature, excessive body fat, decreased muscle mass, and impaired quality of life. GH therapy is able to ameliorate the phenotypic appearance of the syndrome, as well as to improve body composition, physical strength, and cognitive level. In this regard, however, some pathophysiologic and clinical questions still remain, representing a challenge to give the most appropriate care to PWS patients. Data about the prevalence of GHD in PWS children are not unequivocal, ranging from 40% to 100%. In this context, to establish whether the presence (or not) of GHD may have a different effect on clinical course during GH therapy may be helpful. In addition, the comparison of GH effects in PWS children diagnosed as small for gestational age with those obtained in subjects born appropriate for gestational age is of potential interest for future trials. Emerging information seems to demonstrate the maintenance of beneficial effects of GH therapy in PWS subjects after adolescent years. Thus, GH retesting after achievement of final height should be taken into consideration for all PWS patients. However, it is noteworthy that GH administration exerts positive effects both in PWS adults with and without GHD. Another critical issue is to clarify whether the genotype-phenotype correlations may be relevant to specific outcome measures related to GH therapy. Moreover, progress of our understanding of the role of GH replacement and concomitant therapies on bone characteristics of PWS is required. Finally, a long-term surveillance of benefits and risks of GH therapy is strongly recommended for PWS population, since most of the current studies are uncontrolled and of short duration.

The optimal composition of standardized parenteral nutrition (SPN) is not yet known, contributing to nutrient deficit accrual and growth failure, with the period of parenteral nutrition weaning, i.e., transition (TN) phase, being identified as particularly vulnerable. We created a comprehensive nutrition database, representative of the nutritional course of a diverse range of preterm infants (n = 59, birth weight ≤ 1500 g, gestation < 34 weeks) by collecting hourly macronutrient intake data as part of a prospective, observational study over 19 months. Using a nutrient modeling technique for the TN phase, various amino acid (AA) concentrations of SPN were tested within the database, whilst acknowledging the nutritional contribution from enteral feeds until target AA intakes were consistently achieved. From the modeling, the AA composition of SPN was determined at 3.5 g/100 mL, which was the maximum to avoid exceeding target intakes at any point in the TN phase. However, in order to consistently achieve target AA intakes, additional nutritional strategies were required, which included increasing the exclusion of enteral feeds in fluid and nutrient calculations from
