Alveolar ridge regularization involves the smoothing and minimal reduction of rough alveolar bone ridge to achieve adequate bone thickness around the implant. The effect of this procedure on peri-implant health is unclear.The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate whether bone regularization affects the clinical and biological parameters of peri-implant health when narrow diameter implants are placed as mandibular implant overdenture retainers during initial healing and after occlusal loading.The need for mandibular ridge regularization in the anterior mandibular region was analyzed before the placement of 2 implants (2.9×10 mm, Facility; Neodent) in 21 participants provided with mandibular overdentures. Primary stability was measured by the insertion torque and implant stability quotient (ISQ). Clinical and biological evaluations measuring the plaque index, presence of calculus, probing depth, bleeding on probing index, gingival index, secondary stability (ISQ), and interleukine-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) concentrations in peri-implant crevicular fluid were measured during osseointegration on days 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 and after loading on day 180 after implant placement. Multilevel mixed-effects linear regression analysis and the Kaplan-Meier test were used to analyze the data (α=.05).The ISQ values showed significant differences on days 7 (P.001) and 15 (P=.002) with higher values and on day 180 (P=.008) with a lower value compared with the baseline value in the ridge regularization group. Additionally, a significant decrease in probing depth was observed on days 60 (P=.008) and 180 (P=.027) compared with that on day 15 after implant placement. In the nonridge regularization group, significant decreases in probing depth were observed on days 30 and 180. Moreover, TNF-α levels in this group were significantly lower on days 30 (P=.001), 60, 90, and 180 (P.001) when compared with the value on day 7 (P.001). The ridge regularization group presented with significant differences in TNF-α and IL-1β levels on days 60 (P=.004) and 30 (P=.007), respectively, when compared with the values on day 7. The ISQ and probing depth in the ridge regularization group were associated with changes in TNF-α and IL-1β levels; furthermore, bone type, duration of edentulism, and mandibular bone atrophy were correlated with the clinical outcomes and TNF-α release. The implant survival rate was 67% in the nonridge regularization group and 100% in the ridge regularization group.Mandibular ridge regularization appeared to be beneficial for peri-implant healing during the early stages and after 3 months of occlusal loading in patients with an atrophic ridge, prolonged time since edentulism, and poor bone quality.

Maize breeding faces several challenges when the matter is abiotic stresses. For many years, the focus was to develop genotypes adapted to optimal environmental conditions, however, the need to ensure yields under unsuitable and unstable conditions of a climate-changing world is undeniable. Therefore, this review is addressed to the main abiotic stresses that jeopardize maize production worldwide, presenting an overview regarding losses and impacts imposed by them, stating what has been achieved through conventional and molecular plant breeding techniques, and the future prospects on this subject. The conventional breeding added to molecular techniques bring great expectations for developing abiotic stresses tolerant maize genotypes. Universities and research companies worldwide have contributed to expand and spread basic and essential knowledge, however, the entrance of large multinational companies might revolutionize the field. Genetic modified hybrids and projects of continental coverage will introduce many innovations and alternatives to ensure food security for the increasingly growing world population.

Objetivos: Identificar a configuração da organização do trabalho docente de enfermagem antes e após a inserção do ideário neoliberal no contexto da saúde e da educação, e analisar os impactos dos preceitos neoliberais no processo de trabalho docente de enfermagem. Métodos: Pesquisa qualitativa e descritiva. Participaram 27 docentes de universidades federais, através de entrevista semiestruturada. Estudo aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em pesquisa sob número 1.474.463. Resultado: Incluem-se como impactos do modelo neoliberal: alta demanda e elevado ritmo laboral; precarização; sucateamento de salários e perda de benefício e direitos; inserção de tecnologias. Considerações finais: As mudanças deixaram o trabalho docente mais complexo, exigindo polivalência e multifuncionalidade, sem o devido acompanhamento salarial e de benefícios laborais condizentes.

Whether ultrasonic activation of the adhesive system improves dentin tubule penetration and the bond strength of fiber posts to root dentin is unclear.The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic activation of 2 adhesive systems (etch-and-rinse and self-etch) and 1 glass ionomer cement on the dentin tubule penetration and pushout bond strength of fiber posts to root dentin.Sixty maxillary central incisors were endodontically treated and divided into 6 groups (n=10) as per the post cementation strategy: etch-and-rinse, etch-and-rinse and ultrasonic, self-etch, self-etch and ultrasonic, glass ionomer cement, and glass ionomer cement and ultrasonic. The primers, the adhesives, and the glass ionomer cement were activated for 20 seconds each, and the fiber posts were cemented with a resin cement. Dentin tubule penetration was evaluated by confocal laser scanning microscopy and the pushout bond strength measured at 3 post locations: cervical, middle, and apical. The failure patterns were also described after pushout testing.Self-etch and ultrasonic showed higher dentin tubule penetration than the other cementation strategies (P.05) and improved the bond strength values (P.05), which were higher than etch-and-rinse and ultrasonic and glass ionomer cement and ultrasonic (P.05). Adhesive failures at the cement and dentin interface were predominant in the etch-and-rinse, self-etch, and self-etch and ultrasonic groups.Ultrasonic activation improved the dentin tubule penetration of a self-etch adhesive system. The bond strength of fiber posts cemented with a self-etch adhesive system and a resin cement was improved after ultrasonic activation.

PURPOSE International guideline recommendations may not always be extrapolated to developing countries where access to resources is limited. In metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC), there have been successful drug and imaging advancements that were addressed in the Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference for Developing Countries for best-practice and limited-resource scenarios. METHODS A total of 24 out of 300 questions addressed staging, treatment, and follow-up for patients with mCSPC both in best-practice settings and resource-limited settings. Responses were compiled and presented in percentage of clinicians supporting each response. Questions had 4-8 options for response. RESULTS Recommendations for staging in mCSPC were split but there was consensus that chest x-ray, abdominal and pelvic computed tomography, and bone scan should be used where resources are limited. In both de novo and relapsed low-volume mCSPC, orchiectomy alone in limited resources was favored and in relapsed high-volume disease, androgen deprivation therapy plus docetaxel in limited resources and androgen deprivation therapy plus abiraterone in high-resource settings were consensus. A 3-weekly regimen of docetaxel was consensus among voters. When using abiraterone, a regimen of 1,000 mg plus prednisone 5 mg/d is optimal, but in limited-resource settings, half the panel agreed that abiraterone 250 mg with fatty foods plus prednisone 5 mg/d is acceptable. The panel recommended against the use of osteoclast-targeted therapy to prevent osseous complications. There was consensus that monitoring of patients undergoing systemic treatment should only be conducted in case of prostate-specific antigen elevation or progression-suggestive symptoms. CONCLUSION The treatment recommendations for most topics addressed differed between the best-practice setting and resource-limited setting, accentuating the need for high-quality evidence that contemplates the effect of limited resources on the management of mCSPC.

PURPOSE To present a summary of the treatment and follow-up recommendations for the biochemical recurrence in castration-sensitive prostate cancer (PCa) acquired through a questionnaire administered to 99 PCa experts from developing countries during the Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference for Developing Countries. METHODS A total of 27 questions were identified as related to this topic from more than 300 questions. The clinician's responses were tallied and presented in a percentage format. Topics included the use of imaging for staging biochemical recurrence, treatment recommendations for three different clinical scenarios, the field of radiation recommended, and follow-up. Each question had 5-7 relevant response options, including “abstain” and/or “unqualified to answer,” and investigated not only recommendations but also if a limitation in resources would change the recommendation. RESULTS For most questions, a clear majority (> 50%) of clinicians agreed on a recommended treatment for imaging, treatment scenarios, and follow-up, although only a few topics reached a consensus > 75%. Limited resources did affect several areas of treatment, although in many cases, they reinforced more stringent criteria for treatment such as prostate-specific antigen values > 0.2 ng/mL and STAMPEDE inclusion criteria as a basis for recommending treatment. CONCLUSION A majority of clinicians working in developing countries with limited resources use similar cutoff points and selection criteria to manage patients treated for biochemically recurrent castration-sensitive PCa.

The purpose of this overview was to assess different antibiotic regimens used in orthognathic surgery and to establish an evidence-based protocol so that beneficial and adverse effects can be determined. A comprehensive literature search for systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses was conducted in MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library until March 2020. Grey literature was investigated in Google Scholar, and a manual search was done of references lists. Two meta-analyses and four systematic reviews met the inclusion criteria. The AMSTAR-2-tool was used to ascertain the potential risk of bias in the included studies, which presented moderate to high methodological quality. Lower infection rates were associated with long-term therapies of penicillin, cefazolin-cephalexin, and amoxicillin-clavulanic-acid, with rates varying from 0% - 3.13%. Higher rates were reported in placebo groups (52.6%) and short-term penicillin therapy (60%). Side effects were reported with cefazolin, clindamycin, and penicillin therapies, including nausea, pain, swelling, headache, vomiting, and skin rash. Evidence suggests that long-term antibiotics can reduce the risk of a surgical site infection (SSI) in orthognathic surgery, but there is uncertainty regarding the effects of one dose of antibiotics preoperatively versus short-term antibiotics. In the same way, intravenous penicillin, cefazolin, clindamycin, and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid kept the infection rates associated with bimaxillary procedures under 3.5%.

Neonatal hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy is a major cause of mortality and disability in newborns and the only standard approach for treating this condition is therapeutic hypothermia, which shows some limitations. Thus, putative neuroprotective agents have been tested in animal models. The present study evaluated the administration of lactate, a potential energy substrate of the central nervous system (CNS) in an animal model of hypoxia–ischemia (HI), that mimics in neonatal rats the brain damage observed in human newborns. Seven-day-old (P7) male and female Wistar rats underwent permanent common right carotid occlusion combined with an exposition to a hypoxic atmosphere (8% oxygen) for 60 min. Animals were assigned to four experimental groups: HI, HI + LAC, SHAM, SHAM + LAC. Lactate was administered intraperitoneally 30 min and 2 h after hypoxia in HI + LAC and SHAM + LAC groups. HI and SHAM groups received vehicle at the same time points. The volume of brain lesion was evaluated in P9. Animals underwent behavioral assessments: negative geotaxis, righting reflex (P8 and P14), and cylinder test (P20). Lactate administration reduced the volume of brain lesion and improved behavioral parameters after HI in both sexes. Thus, lactate administration could be a neuroprotective strategy for the treatment of neonatal HI, a disorder still affecting a significant percentage of human newborns.

The aim of the study was to determine whether the addition of vegetable biocholine (VB) in laying hens feed minimises the effects of daily intake of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). We allocated Hy-line Brown line laying hens into four groups with four replications/group and four birds/repetition. The treatments were as follows: Afla0Bio0: basal feed without aflatoxin and VB (natural contamination: 0.026 mg AFB1/kg), Afla0Bio800, basal feed supplementation of 800 mg VB/kg (natural contamination: 0.024 mg AFB1/kg); Afla2.5Bio0, basal feed contaminated experimentally with aflatoxin (2.51 mg/kg); Afla2.5Bio800, basal feed contaminated with aflatoxin (2.50 mg/kg) and supplemented with 800 mg VB/kg. The experiment took place over a period of 42 days, divided into two cycles of 21 days each. Significance was indicated by P≤0.05. The inclusion of aflatoxin reduced egg production after 42 days of consumption of contaminated feed. VB supplementation in the tested dose was insufficient to minimise the negative effects of the toxin on the laying rate. There was a lower percentage of yolk in Afla2Bio0 than in Afla0Bio0, and a higher percentage of albumen and specific gravity in Afla2.5Bio0 than in Afla0Bio0. Ingestion of aflatoxin in the feed increased lipoperoxidation (LPO) and decreased antioxidant capacity in the egg yolk; however, when VB was added, LPO was similar to the control. Lower total bacterial count (TBC) in the eggshell was observed when the birds consumed VB, as well as higher TBC in the eggshell of the birds was challenged with aflatoxin. In the blood of birds that consumed aflatoxin (Afla2.5Bio0) there was an increase in the activity of alkaline phosphatase and a reduction in the activities of glutathione S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). In the birds that consumed VB without aflatoxin challenge, we observed that there was a stimulation of GPx activity. We conclude that the consumption of VB had positive effects on the health of the laying hens and improved the quality of the eggs.

The interruption of the maternal-filial bond in young calves can alter the physiological responses due to increased stress at this moment. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the association between age at weaning and the immune responses of 64 beef calves weaned abruptly. The animals were distributed in three weaning (W) treatments: hyper-early (W30), early (W75) and conventional (W180). The treatments agree with the weaning ages used in cow-calf systems in South America. Blood samples were collected of all experimental animals on the day of weaning and days 1, 2 and 7 post-weaning day of the three treatments. Blood samples were used to analyze hematological variables, total plasma proteins (TPP), fibrinogen, serum amyloid A protein (SAA) and cortisol. The variables analyzed were influenced by the sampling day (P 0.001) and the calf gender (P 0.05), and an interaction between treatment x sampling day was observed. Over the study period, high serum cortisol levels were observed for W30 calves. The serum amyloid A protein was significantly influenced by sampling day. When compared to W180 calves, W30 and W75 animals showed prolonged concentrations in plasma fibrinogen. In addition, they presented neutrophilia and lymphopenia during the 180-187 days period, which resulted in a greater neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio (N:L ratio). Calf gender resulted in changes in the number of blood leukocytes (P 0.05). This result provides an alert for weaning at an early age, indicating that different management strategies must be tested to minimize physiological instabilities in critical periods of the life of animals.

Bacterial resistance has become one of the most serious public health problems, globally, and drug repurposing is being investigated to speed up the identification of effective drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate the repurposing of escitalopram oxalate and clonazepam drugs individually, and in combination with the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole–trimethoprim, to treat multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms and to evaluate the potential chemical nuclease activity. The minimum inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration, fractional inhibitory concentration index, and tolerance level were determined for each microorganism tested. In vitro antibacterial activity was evaluated against 47 multidrug-resistant clinical isolates and 11 standard bacterial strains from the American Type Culture Collection. Escitalopram oxalate was mainly active against Gram-positive bacteria, and clonazepam was active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. When associated with the two antibiotics mentioned, they had a significant synergistic effect. Clonazepam cleaved plasmid DNA, and the mechanisms involved were oxidative and hydrolytic. These results indicate the potential for repurposing these non-antibiotic drugs to treat bacterial infections. However, further studies on the mechanism of action of these drugs should be performed to ensure their safe use.

Objective: To examine oral colonization and virulence factors of Candida spp. in patients aged from 0 to 18 months with cleft palate (CP). Materials and Methods: Sixty babies were allocated into 3 groups: CP, CP with orthodontic plate (CPwP), and control group (Ctrl) without CP. Information on feeding habits, hygiene, and history of candidosis was collected. The presence of Candida spp. was investigated in samples of saliva. Fungal hydrophobicity, protease, esterase, phospholipase, and hemolysin were evaluated in a semiquantitative manner. Results: Positive oral isolations of Candida spp. were detected in CP (89.5%), CPwP (100%), and Ctrl (44%) groups. Candidosis was more reported in the cleft groups than in the Ctrl group ( P ≤ .023). There was a higher prevalence of Candida albicans, followed by Candida krusei, Candida tropicalis, and Candida parapsilosis in all groups. There was no uniformity of expression of virulence factors, either among different species or among different groups. Conclusion: Candida spp. colonization occurred in all groups, being superior in CPwP group. Candidosis episodes were more reported in patients from CPwP than in other groups, although candidosis was also registered in other groups. Candida albicans was the predominant species and virulence factors did not exhibit any pattern for species or groups of patients.

Latent fingermarks are important trace evidence found in crime scenes mainly used for identification purposes. Once deposited, the composition of samples changes over time influencing the efficacy of latent fingermark development methods. In this sense, the aims of this work were to characterize the fatty acid (FA) profile of sebaceous latent fingermarks by GC-FID and to preliminarily evaluate the development efficiency of enhancement methods (powder dusting, iodine fuming and silver nitrate method) in a 30-day period of aging under controlled parameters of temperature, photoperiod and humidity. Results showed that myristic (7.51 ± 0.76% - 13.39 ± 1.26%), palmitic (35.91 ± 1.07% - 40.81 ± 2.52%), stearic (6.67 ± 0.36% - 9.13 ± 0.36%) and oleic (18.08 ± 0.25% - 20.93 ± 0.26%) acid varied significantly (p 0.05) over the 30-day period of analysis. Regarding development efficiency, fluorescent orange powder and the silver nitrate method also increased their efficacy to develop latent fingermarks over time while the iodine fuming method decreased its efficiency. Silver black powder had constant efficacy in the tested period. Changes in the constitution of sebaceous marks possibly influenced the development efficiency of enhancement techniques. This knowledge is important to better understand the kinetic of aging and its influence on the development method.

Introduction As coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) spread worldwide and social restrictions were intensified, difficulties in blood supply were expected to result in a shortage of blood donors, logistic issues and a change in blood consumption. Consequences could be detrimental to the meeting of the blood supply demand, especially in a decentralized blood bank in the State of Sao Paulo responsible for providing blood to more than 100 hospitals, mostly of the public health system. Aiming to minimize negative effects and focusing on maintenance of the blood supply, a different approach was discussed and adopted. Materials and methods Briefly, strategies were related to monitoring and promoting measures to achieve a positive RBC unit balance. Thus, the number of donors, transfusions, RBC unit inventory, RBC unit loss and RBC units within up to 5 days from the expiration date were evaluated. Results Several strategies were adopted to ensure sufficient availability of RBC units: blood donation was improved with social media and extra blood collections, a restrictive transfusion protocol was implemented, a new logistic process to use RBC units closer to the expiration date was established and non-isogroup transfusions were avoided. Conclusion Altogether, described strategies were crucial to optimize blood storage during the pandemic. Investing in monitoring and logistics contributed to a positive RBC unit balance and conserving these strategies could be useful.

Anticarsia gemmatalis is one of the main defoliators of soybean in Brazil. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) transgenic crops are used for their management. In this paper we used RNA-seq to explore the response of A. gemmatalis to Bt HD73, as well as to detect transcriptional differences after Bt infection between resistant and susceptible strains. A total of 3853 and 6224 differentially expressed genes (DGEs) were identified in susceptible and resistant larvae after Bt exposure, respectively. We identified 2143 DEGs between susceptible and resistant larvae and 1991 between susceptible and resistant larvae Bt exposed. Immunity-related genes, Bt toxins receptors, proteases, genes involved in metabolic processes, transporters, cuticle proteins and mobile elements have been identified. qRT-PCR data demonstrated upregulation of five genes in susceptible strain after Bt exposure. These results provide insights to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of response to Bt that could be used in strategies to control agricultural pests.

Background Survivors of critical care may demonstrate mental health disorders in the months after discharge. Research Question What are risk factors for mental health disorders after ICU discharge and is there an association between the burden of mental illness and health-related quality of life (HRQoL)? Study Design and Methods Multicenter prospective cohort study that included 579 adult ICU survivors with an ICU stay of > 72 h in 10 ICUs. Results The outcomes were anxiety and depression assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) assessed by the Impact Event Scale 6, and HRQoL assessed by the Short Form 12 version 2. The 6-month prevalences of any mental health disorder were 36.2% (the prevalences of anxiety, depression, and PTSD were 24.2%, 20.9%, and 15.4%, respectively). ICU survivors with mental health disorders showed worse HRQoL scores in both physical and mental dimensions than those without. The higher the number of psychiatric syndromes manifested, the worse the mental dimension of HRQoL. Age of Interpretation The network of potential risk factors for mental illness among patients discharged from an ICU is complex and involves multiple factors (age, premorbid mental health, acute emotional stress, and physical impairment after ICU stay). The negative impact of the burden of mental illness on HRQoL among critical care survivors is of concern.

Summary Objective To determine whether an association exists between auditory skills and the reliability of judgments of the vocal deviation grade and the degrees of roughness and breathiness and to evaluate whether these skills are predictive of interrater reliability in auditory-perceptual evaluations. Methods The sample consisted of 20 speech-language pathology students without previous training in auditory-perceptual evaluation. The students underwent a basic audiological evaluation and a central auditory processing evaluation. They then participated in two auditory-perceptual evaluation sessions assessing the general grade (GG) and the degrees of roughness and breathiness of 44 samples of sustained vowel production with the presence or absence of dysphonia. For statistical analysis, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and a beta regression model were used. Results A difference was found in the average ICCs of the GG parameter between listeners with high and low temporal resolution and binaural interaction skills. Temporal resolution skills and binaural interaction affected the ICC of listeners in the GG evaluation, reducing the likelihood of reliability by 2.8 and 3.6 times, respectively. Conclusion An association exists between temporal resolution skills and binaural interaction and the reliability of listeners in evaluations of vocal deviation severity. Listeners with low levels of these skills show less reliability in evaluations of the severity of vocal deviation. In addition, temporal resolution and binaural interaction are predictors and explain 42.7% of the variability in the reliability of evaluations of vocal deviation severity.

There are currently 156 species in the subfamily Triatominae, distributed in 18 genera and five tribes. The prolixus group of the genus Rhodnius is composed of 11 species. Rhodnius marabaensis was the last species described and considered in this grouping of vectors. Knowledge about the biology, ecology, and behavior of these vectors is of great epidemiological importance, and in order to expand the knowledge of the biology of R. marabaensis, this paper describes the biological cycle and emergence rates of the species under laboratory conditions. The experiment was carried out at temperatures ranging from 15.5 to 29 °C (average of 24 °C) and humidity ranging from 51.4 to 72.2 (average of 63). For each of the fifteen couples, the egg emergence rate was calculated throughout the oviposition period. The oviposition period lasted from February to September, and the emergence rate varied between 13.9 and 53.3%. R. marabaensis presented an emergence rate of 46.7% and a total biological cycle of 193 days (the mean time required for emergence (25.1 days), 1st nymphal instar (19.4 days), 2nd nymphal instar (22.1 days), 3rd nymphal instar (26.2 days), 4th nymphal instar (29.3 days), and 5th nymphal instar (70.9 days)). Based on the biological cycle of R. marabaensis and 14 other Rhodnius species already described in the literature, it was also possible to calculate the averages for the groups prolixus, pictipes, and pallescens and, mainly, for the genus Rhodnius, contributing to the knowledge of this important group of Chagas disease vectors. Objetivo: identificar na literatura as estratégias e ações utilizadas pelo enfermeiro na promoção da sexualidade de pacientes com Doença Renal Crônica. Método: revisão integrativa, com abordagem qualitativa e coleta de dados nas bases Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, no Banco de Dados em Enfermagem e no Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, utilizando os seguintes descritores: “Sexualidade” and “Doença Renal Crônica” and Enfermagem or Enfermeiro”. A busca resultou em 232 produções, sendo 12 selecionadas para análise. Resultados: as estratégias e ações utilizadas pelo enfermeiro estão relacionadas ao cuidado e à utilização do processo de enfermagem. Conclusão: A atuação do enfermeiro contribui para a promoção da assistência integral ao paciente renal crônico, em todas as dimensões do cuidado, abrangendo a sexualidade. Ao aplicar o processo de enfermagem é possível traçar um plano de cuidado conforme sua realidade e auxiliar para uma melhor qualidade de vida.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Dinosaurs possess a form of tooth attachment wherein an unmineralized periodontal ligament suspends each tooth within a socket, similar to the condition in mammals and crocodylians. However, little information is known about tooth attachment and implantation in their close relatives, the silesaurids. We conducted a histological survey of several silesaurid taxa to determine the nature of tooth attachment in this phylogenetically and paleoecologically important group of archosaurs. Our histological data demonstrate that these early dinosauriforms do not exhibit the crocodilian/dinosaur condition of a permanent gomphosis, nor the rapid ankylosis that is plesiomorphic for amniotes. Instead, all sampled silesaurids exhibit delayed ankylosis, a condition in which teeth pass through a prolonged stage where the teeth are suspended in sockets by a periodontal ligament, followed by eventual mineralization and fusion of the tooth to the jaws. This suggests that tooth attachment in crocodylians and dinosaurs represent the further retention of an early ontogenetic stage compared to silesaurids, a paedomorphic trend that is mirrored in the evolution of synapsid tooth attachment. It also suggests that the dinosaur and crocodylian gomphosis was convergently acquired via heterochrony or, less likely, that the silesaurid condition represents a reversal to a plesiomorphic state. Moreover, if Silesauridae is nested within Ornithischia, a permanent gomphosis could be convergent between the two main dinosaur lineages, Ornithischia and Saurischia. These results demonstrate that dental characters in early archosaur phylogenies must be chosen and defined carefully, taking into account the relative duration of the different phases of dental ontogeny. Affectively rated image databases have their main application in studies that require inducing distinct stimuli on subjects. Widespread databases are designed to cover a broad range of stimuli, from negative to positive (valence), and relaxed to excited (arousal). The availability of narrow domain databases, designed to cover and thoroughly analyze a few categories of images that induce a particular stimulus, is limited. We present a narrow domain affective database with positive images, named e-Nature Positive Emotions Photography Database (e-NatPOEM), consisting of 433 high-quality images produced by professional and amateur photographers. A total of 739 participants evaluated them using a web-based tool to input valence-arousal values and a single word describing the evoked feeling. This study aimed to produce soluble potato starch ultrafine fibers for the encapsulation of pinhao coat extract (PCE), evaluating their relative crystallinity (RC), thermal stability, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as in vitro biological digestion. In the simulation of in vitro biological digestion, the phenolic compounds release profile was also evaluated. The ultrafine fibers were produced by electrospinning, based on a polymeric solution composed of soluble potato starch (50% w/v) and formic acid. Then, PCE was incorporated at various concentrations (0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%, w/w, dry basis). The endothermic event of free PCE was not observed in the ultrafine fibers, which suggests its encapsulation. The RC decreased according to the increase in PCE concentration in the ultrafine fibers. The PCE resisted thermal treatments when encapsulated into the ultrafine fibers (100 and 180°C), and the ultrafine fibers with 1% PCE presented the highest amount of preserved phenolic compounds. In this study, crude and partially purified xylanase from Aureobasidium pullulans CCT 1261 were characterized and applied in beechwood xylan hydrolysis to obtain xylooligosaccharides (XOS). Fractional precipitation (0–30 %/30–60 %) with ammonium sulfate allowed partial purification of xylanases in 6.8-fold and recovery of 69.4 %. Both extracts exhibited optimum activity at 50 °C and pH 4.5, and greater stability at 40 °C within the studied range. The thermostability parameters (kd, t1/2, ΔH*, ΔG*, ΔS*) of the extracts indicated the enzyme denaturation by the increment in temperature from 40 °C to 60 °C; its process was endothermic and led to protein unfolding in a more random structure. Crude xylanase showed a lower value of the Michaelis-Menten constant (25 mg/mL) than the partially purified enzyme (50 mg/mL). In hydrolysis reactions, total XOS contents (7.7 mg/mL and 7.9 mg/mL) and XOS yields (25.7 % and 26.5 %) were equal statistically using the crude or partially purified extracts, differing only in the amount of xylose released. The hydrolysates were mainly composed of potential prebiotics, i.e., xylobiose (50.9 % and 53.8 %) and xylotriose (30.9 % and 32.8 %). Based on these results, the use of crude and partially purified xylanase from A. pullulans showed a promising perspective for xylan hydrolysis to produce XOS.

Plants with the crassulacean acid metabolism commonly present good adaptation to arid and semi-arid environments, but it highly depends on the type of species. In this study, chlorophyll fluorescence, the concentration of inorganic and organic solutes and the productive performance were evaluated along with their relationships in different clones of the genera Opuntia and Nopalea. The experiment was conducted from 2016 to 2018. Four clones of genus Opuntia were evaluated: ‘Orelha de Elefante Mexicana’ (OEM), ‘Orelha de Elefante Africana’ (OEA), V19 and F8; and two clones of genus Nopalea: ‘IPA Sertânia’ and ‘Miuda’. The experiment was arranged in a randomised block design, with six treatments and three replications. The following parameters were measured when harvesting: initial, maximum and variable fluorescence; the quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm); light-induction curves of the photochemical parameters (ΔF/Fm’, qP, NPQ and ETR); the chlorophyll and carotenoid content; carbohydrates; the sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) content; morphometry; and dry matter accumulation. Aims Accidental contact with the Lonomia obliqua caterpillar is a common event in southern Brazil. Envenomed victims present consumption coagulopathy, which can evolve to acute kidney injury (AKI). In the present study, we searched for AKI biomarkers and changes in molecular pathway signatures through urine proteomic analysis. Methodology Male Wistar rats were injected with L. obliqua venom (1.5 mg/kg, via s.c.) or 0.9 % NaCl and distributed into metabolic cages. After 24 h, urine was obtained, and the set of differentially regulated proteins was analyzed by MudPIT technology in an OrbiTRAP mass spectrometer. Results L. obliqua venom leads to an increase in urine output and water and electrolyte excretion and to an increase in the albumin to creatine ratio in urine. The proteomic analysis revealed an up-regulation of tubular injury biomarkers, such as neutrophil-gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) and cystatin C, in urine from envenomed rats. Several components related to the heme scavenging system were up-regulated or exclusively identified in urine from envenomed animals. There was an increase in urinary heme levels and hemoglobin subunits, hemopexin, haptoglobin, and biliverdin reductase. Similarly, kinin- and angiotensin-generating/degrading peptidases, such as kallikreins, neprilysin, plasmin, dipeptidyl peptidase IV, cathepsin D, kininogen, and neutral, basic, glutamyl, and acidic aminopeptidases, were also up-regulated in urine. Conclusions L. obliqua envenomation induced tubular and glomerular injury, probably involving heme/hemoglobin toxicity and an imbalance in the kinin/angiotensin generating/degrading system.

O artigo examina o fenômeno da midiatização com foco nos processos de circulação de sentidos. Em meio à profusão imagética da sociedade midiatizada, investiga-se a disputa pela construção da imagem do Exército Brasileiro durante a operação de pacificação do Complexo da Maré, ocorrida entre 2014 e 2015. Como referencial teórico, defende-se uma compreensão do fenômeno da midiatização baseada na abordagem mais recente de Verón (2014), que encaminha às noções de circulação a partir de Braga (2012) e Fausto Neto (2010) e de dispositivo midiático a partir de Ferreira (2013). Quanto aos aspectos metodológicos, parte-se do esquema prógono de Verón para análise da midiatização (1997) para a constituição de dois eixos de análise, organizados em três coleções de imagens referentes a acontecimentos da operação. Tensionadas quanto a aspectos sócio-semio-técnicos, as coleções revelam categorias de imagens produzidas sobre o Exército, posteriormente sistematizadas em diagramas inferenciais. Conclui-se que, na circulação midiática atual, cada vez mais heterogênea e transversal, além da disputa intermidiática que atravessa a construção da imagem do Exército na Maré, configura-se também uma coprodução da imagem institucional, potencializada pela processualidade simbólica que, paradoxalmente, fortalece determinadas imagens em detrimento de outras.

Background Orthodontic tooth movements are performed by applying forces on teeth, which may cause alterations within the dental pulp. Previously published systematic reviews on the subject only included a small number of studies that assessed pulp status through reliable diagnostic methods. Since then, new evidence has been published, and a further systematic review on the subject is necessary. Objectives To evaluate whether there is scientific evidence to support the possibility that orthodontic tooth movements could induce pulp necrosis. Methods A systematic search of articles published until June 2020 was performed using MeSH and free terms in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, LILACS, SciELO, Web of Science, EMBASE, Open Grey and Grey Literature databases. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs), nonrandomized clinical trials (nRCTs) and longitudinal (prospective or retrospective) studies that evaluated the pulp status of teeth subjected to orthodontic movements using laser Doppler flowmetry or pulse oximetry were included. The revised Cochrane risk of bias tools for randomized trials (RoB 2) and nonrandomized interventions (ROBINS-I) were used to assess the quality of the included studies. Relevant findings were summarized and evaluated. The overall quality of evidence was assessed through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool. Results Initial screening of databases resulted in 353 studies. In total, 285 studies were excluded because they were duplicates. Of 68 eligible papers, fourteen met the inclusion criteria and were selected for full-text reading. Two studies were excluded due to the methods used to evaluate pulp status. Twelve studies (five RCTs, one nRCT and six prospective) were included. Four RCTs were classified as having an unclear risk of bias and one as having a high risk of bias. The nRCT was classified as having a low risk of bias. Two prospective studies were classified as having a moderate risk of bias and four as having a serious risk of bias. The GRADE analysis demonstrated a low to very low quality of evidence. Discussion Significant limitations regarding the randomization processes within the included RCTs and a lack of control of confounders on most nonrandomized and longitudinal studies were verified. Conclusions This systematic review indicates that orthodontic movements do not induce loss of pulp vitality with low to very low certainty of evidence.

The objective was to evaluate the application of foliar nitrogen in different doses and times, as a complement to soil fertilization. The work was conducted in a rural area of the municipality of Terra Nova do Norte – MT, located in the southern of brazilian Amazon. The treatments were a combination of foliar applications of nitrogen at doses of 0, 250, 500 and 750 mL.ha-1, and two application times with different intervals: 15 and 40 days after emergence; and 25 and 40 days after the emergency. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications, in a factorial 4 x 2, totaling eight treatments. It was found that the variables green mass productivity and dried plant and ear and ear length responded positively as the N rates and application times. It was also observed that the foliar application of nitrogen increased the productivity of corn for silage, and better results are obtained from 750 mL.ha-1 of the studied leaf fertilizer. There was no increase in production factors when the foliar application of nitrogen was split.

Os processos de formação continuada foram intensificados nos anos de 2018/2019 no município de Rio Grande/RS para atender a legislação vigente. O presente estudo realizado, com 58 professores de Educação Física, objetivou compreender a percepção sobre a participação nos processos formativos propostos e as contribuições na prática pedagógica. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva, de caráter qualitativo, que utilizou um questionário autoaplicado como instrumento para coleta de dados. A análise de conteúdo permeou a organização, o entendimento e apontou as categorias desenvolvidas. Os professores sinalizam que participar dos processos formativos é uma oportunidade de compartilhamento e troca de experiências, que possibilita a inovação através da busca por novos conteúdos e metodologias de modo a qualificar a sua prática pedagógica, além de ser um espaço propício para o exercício da prática reflexiva, impulsionando as adaptações necessárias aos diferentes contextos.

Introduction It has been suggested that visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is associated with several non-communicable chronic diseases, but measuring it is difficult. Thus, anthropometry could be used because is easily applied in clinical practice. Objectives The present study aimed to develop and validate VAT estimation equations (Eq) in military men. Methods The sample consisted of 409 (mean age, 36.5 ± 6.7 years) military men in the Brazilian Army (BA) divided into an equation group (EG) ( n = 270; mean age, 37.0 ± 6.3 years) and a validation group (VG) ( n =139; mean age, 36.0 ± 7.2 years). Anthropometric, hemodynamic and DXA body composition evaluations ( GE iLunar ) were performed. The Student’s t test, Pearson’s correlation, and stepwise general linear regression were applied. Bland-Altman graphics were used to assess the concordance between VAT by Eq and by DXA. The level of significance was 95% ( p < 0.05). Results Age, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference and body mass index presented the main significant positive correlations with the VAT-DXA. Four Eq were created Eq1 ( r 2 = 0.793), Eq2 ( r 2 = 0.810), Eq3 ( r 2 = 0.817), and Eq 4 ( r 2 = 0.823) ( p < 0.05). No differences were observed between VAT by DXA and VAT by Eq ( p = 0.982, p = 0.970, p = 0.495 and p = 0.698). Bland-Altman analysis also presented good concordance as the bias was close to zero and was not statistically significant. Conclusion Eq2 (age*13.0 + WC*60.0 - 4975,.5) was more suitable because it is easier to apply, has a higher predictive power (81.0%), less bias (1.86) and validation yielded average VAT values close to those found in DXA. It may still be considered a valuable tool for other extensive epidemiological studies in military men in the BA and can be used in adult men. Purpose: This study aims to correlate female sexual dysfunctions and dissatisfaction with female university students' body image. Methods: 276 female university students completed an online questionnaire, including sociodemographic data, the Female Sexual Function Index, and the Body Shape Questionnaire. Results: 31.1% reported some degree of dissatisfaction with body image, and 39.5% had a risk of female sexual dysfunction. The majority of women with a risk of female sexual dysfunctions (69.4%) had no concerns with shape, and the majority of women without sexual problems (67.7%) had no concerns with shape. Pearson’s coefficient underlined no correlation between Body Shape Questionnaire and Female Sexual Function Index domains. Conclusion: The body image perception did not seem to affect the sexual function of female university students in our sample. However, it is important to further investigate these variables to improve women’s quality of life.

The objectives of this study were to characterize zein fibers and capsules prepared by electrospinning and electrospraying techniques, respectively, and then use them to encapsulate folic acid. Folic acid containing fibers and capsules (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5%, w/v) were submitted to thermal treatment (100, 140, and 180 °C) and ultraviolet A light (UVA) irradiation to evaluate the resistance of folic acid. Zein fibers and capsules containing folic acid showed high encapsulation efficiency (>80%). Unencapsulated folic acid showed a reduction in folic acid content from 17.17 μg/mL to 5.44 μg/mL (approximately 70%) when exposed to 180 °C. Photodegradation of unencapsulated folic acid lowered its concentration from 17.17 μg/mL to 12.58 μg/mL (~26% of reduction), when exposed for 1 h to UVA irradiation. However, folic acid concentration when encapsulated in fibers (1.5%) was maintained or only slightly reduced from 9.73 μg/mg to 8.88 μg/mg after thermal treatment at 180 °C. The capsules containing 1.5% of folic acid also presented a slight reduction in folic acid concentration from 8.84 μg/mg to 7.88 μg/mg when exposed to 24 h of UVA irradiation. Zein fibers and capsules containing folic acid present promising characteristics for application in foods that require thermal processing or exposure to irradiation.

Recently, there has been an increase in the demand for enzymes with modified activity, specificity, and stability. Enzyme engineering is an important tool to meet the demand for enzymes adjusted to different industrial processes. Knowledge of the structure and function of enzymes guides the choice of the best strategy for engineering enzymes. Each enzyme engineering strategy, such as rational design, directed evolution, and semi-rational design, has specific applications, as well as limitations, which must be considered when choosing a suitable strategy. Engineered enzymes can be optimized for different industrial applications by choosing the appropriate strategy. This review features engineered enzymes that have been applied in food, animal feed, pharmaceuticals, medical applications, bioremediation, biofuels, and detergents.

The objective of this study was to analyze the available evidence of systematic reviews that evaluated the efficacy of antenatal corticosteroids in order to contribute to a reduction in magnitude and transcendence of respiratory distress syndrome of the newborn (RDS). Thus, an overview was conducted including all systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated women who received corticosteroid treatment during pregnancy to prevent RDS. Therefore, a search strategy was developed using the terms "respiratory distress syndrome, newborn," "corticosteroids," "perinatal death," "neonatal death," "neonate," and "pregnancy." The electronic databases searched were MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and Google Scholar, for studies published until June 2020. We identified 354 references, 38 of which were relevant after the initial screening. Ten systematic reviews met the inclusion criteria. For RDS, 1522 cases occurred in the control group composed of 8716 participants, while in the intervention group was 1088 in 8740 participants (RR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.60-0.75). For neonatal death, 343 cases occurred in 5248 participants of the control group, while in the intervention group, there were 227 cases in 5246 participants (RR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.56-0.78). For perinatal death, there were 344 cases in 3345 participants in the control group, while in the intervention group, the number of cases was 264 in 3384 participants (RR = 0.72, 95% CI 0.58-0.89). Thus, the use of corticosteroids during pregnancy in women at risk of preterm birth is effective for the prevention of RDS in neonates and reducing the number of neonatal and perinatal deaths in preterm. Early childhood caries (ECC) is a global problem, disproportionately affecting disadvantaged populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate systematically the available scientific evidence on the effectiveness of methods for ECC prevention. Six electronic databases were searched. Two independent reviewers selected the publications and analysed the quality of the included systematic reviews. Thirteen studies were included. Overall, eight reviews were classified with methodological quality critically low using the AMSTAR 2, whereas five reviews achieved a high risk of bias using the ROBIS tool. The methods identified that were positively related to the prevention of ECC were as follows: preventive dental programmes for pregnant women; advice on diet and feeding; prenatal oral health care; integration of maternal and children's oral health promotion into nursing practice; maternal oral health programmes undertaken by non-dental health professionals; dental health education in combination with the use of fluoride for children; early preventive dental visits; and the use of fluoride varnish and toothpastes with more than 1000 ppm of fluoride. The currently available evidence supporting the effectiveness of methods for prevention of ECC, although suggesting some methods of greater potential, is still lacking due to the methodological quality of the systematic reviews and the included primary studies.

To evaluate the effect of electric current application on the resin composite-tooth bond strength and hybrid layer of three adhesive systems light-cured by two light-curing units (LCUs). Human molar teeth were distributed into 12 groups (n=6). Three adhesive systems were used: two-step etch-and-rinse (SB2; Adper Single Bond 2, 3M ESPE); two-step self-etch (CSE; Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray); and one-step self-etch (SBU; Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE) applied with (50μA) and without (control; conventional application) electric current, and light-cured with different LCUs. Resin composite blocks (Filtek Z350XT, 3M ESPE) were produced and cut into sticks (~1mm2) for microtensile bond strength (μTBS). Fracture patterns were analyzed on stereomicroscope and classified as cohesive-dentin, cohesive-resin, adhesive, or mixed. Specimens were prepared for scanning electron microscope observation. The hybrid layer analysis was carried out using a confocal laser scanning microscopy (n=2). Data were submitted to three-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post hoc test (α=0.05). The electric current increased the μTBS for all adhesive systems light-cured with single-emission peak and multiple-emission peak LCUs. Both LCUs presented similar μTBS values. CSE applied under electric current showed the highest μTBS mean values. The adhesive failure pattern was more frequently observed in all groups. The electric current formed long resin tags for all adhesive systems. The adhesive systems applied under electric current increased the bond strength using single-emission peak and multiple-emission peak LCUs. Electric current at 50μA applied throughout the dentin is a safe mode and results in better impregnation of the adhesive systems.

The study aimed to evaluate the fertility of boars according to the resistance of their semen to storage using dilution in either Short- or Long-term extender for single fixed-time insemination. From a total of 32 boars, twelve boars were classified during three semen collection (one collection/boar/week) as Low- (64.5%) or High-preservation (83.9%) capacity for maintaining progressive motility (PM) at 120 h of storage using Short-term extender. After the selection period, six ejaculates (weekly collected) from the Low- and High-preservation boars were diluted in Short- or Long-term extender (2 × 2 factorial design) for insemination and evaluation of fertility. A total of 519 weaned sows were submitted to induction of ovulation with triptorelin (OvuGel®) at 96 h post-weaning. Twenty-four hours later, estrus sows were single fixed-time inseminated (FTAI) with semen doses from the different groups of evaluation. The SAS® software was used for statistical analysis considering the class of boar, type of extender, and interaction as fixed effects. The GLIMMIX procedure was used, considering a binomial distribution for total motility (TM) and PM, binary distribution for pregnancy (PR), and farrowing rate (FR), and the total born (TB) was analyzed assuming a normal distribution with the comparison of means by Tukey-Kramer test. An interaction of class of boars and type of extender was observed for TM and PM at insemination (P 0.001). Long-term extender increased TM in Low-preservation boars, with no effect in High-preservation boars. The ejaculates from High-preservation boars diluted in Short- or Long-term extender showed higher PM at insemination (86.8 and 87.8%, respectively) compared to those from Low-preservation boars in Short- or Long-term extender (73.2% and 77.9%, respectively). There was no effect of the interaction of boar preservation class and type of extender (P ≥ 0.163) on PR, FR or TB. However, Low-preservation boars presented lower TB (14.1 ± 0.2) compared to High-preservation boars (15.0 ± 0.2; P 0.01). The PR (93.3 vs. 90.1) and FR (88.8 vs. 88.2) were not affected by class of Low- or High-preservation boars, respectively (P ≥ 0.187). The type of extender did not affect PR, FR, or TB (P ≥ 0.440). In conclusion, Low-preservation boars impaired the reproductive performance of single-FTAI sows by reducing TB with no apparent effect on PR or FR.

Stress inducible protein 1 (STI1) is a co-chaperone acting with Hsp70 and Hsp90 for the correct client proteins' folding and therefore for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Besides being expressed in the cytosol, STI1 can also be found both in the cell membrane and the extracellular medium playing several relevant roles in the central nervous system (CNS) and tumor microenvironment. During CNS development, in association with cellular prion protein (PrPc), STI1 regulates crucial events such as neuroprotection, neuritogenesis, astrocyte differentiation and survival. In cancer, STI1 is involved with tumor growth and invasion, is undoubtedly a pro-tumor factor, being considered as a biomarker and possibly therapeutic target for several malignancies. In this review, we discuss current knowledge and new findings on STI1 function as well as its role in tissue homeostasis, CNS and tumor progression.

The objective of this study was to produce renewable aerogels from native and anionic corn starches loaded with pinhao coat extract (PCE) with water absorbent capacity, antioxidant activity and controlled release of phenolic compounds in a hydrophilic food simulant media. Starch aerogels were produced with different concentrations of PCE, 5 and 10%, and evaluated for FT-IR spectra, relative crystallinity, thermal properties, water absorption capacity (WAC), density, antioxidant activity and in vitro release. Thermal stability of the compounds was improved by the incorporation of PCE. The aerogels presented high WAC of 541 to 731% and low-density values of 0.03 g.cm−1. The highest inhibition of DPPH and ABTS radicals was presented to anionic starch aerogels with 10% PCE rendering 26% of inhibition of ABTS and 24% of DPPH. The maximum in vitro releases for native and anionic starch aerogels with 5% of PCE were 28.70 and 29.44%, respectively, and for aerogels with 10% of PCE they were 34.27 and 35.94%, respectively. The anionic starch aerogels had the highest amount of phenolic compounds released when compared to the native starch aerogels. The starch-based bioactive aerogels showed potential to be applied in food packaging as water absorbent and as a carrier of phenolic compounds.

This brief proposes an energy-efficient Haar wavelet transform for respiratory signal processing. We analyze and develop a Haar level 5 (Haar-5) transform architecture for separating the frequency bands of respiratory signals. The fixed-point Haar-5 transform herein proposed employs multi-level $M=1$ , $M=2$ , and $M=3$ Haar transforms for the composition of five resolution levels. The architectures were described in VHDL and synthesized in hardware targeting a 65nm CMOS standard cell library. Our investigation results show that most area- and energy-efficient Haar architecture (i.e., version H-IV) employs one $M=1$ block and two $M=2$ blocks. Hardware synthesis results show that the H-IV architecture proposal saves 38.19% of circuit area and 38.26% of power dissipation and energy per operation, compared among the other architectures herein investigated. Our H-IV hardware architecture proposal shows more than 1150 times of energy reduction than state of the art.

Objective To describe and compare the findings of endoscopic sensory assessment in COPD patients and healthy controls. Design A prospective cross-sectional study. Setting Otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic at a university hospital. Participants 27 adults with COPD and 11 age-matched healthy controls. Main outcome measures Group differences in light-touch endoscopic tests of pharyngeal and laryngeal sensation, controlling for pooled salivary secretions in the pharynx and laryngo-pharyngeal reflux as measured by the Reflux Finding Score (RFS). Results A significant difference in laryngeal sensation was found between the study groups (p = 0.047), with reduced laryngeal sensation in the COPD patients. Additionally, a significant relationship was found between impaired oropharyngeal sensation and the presence of pooled salivary secretions in the pharynx (p = 0.018), especially in the pyriform sinuses (p = 0.012). No differences in the frequency of abnormal Reflux Finding Scores were found between groups. Conclusion Individuals with COPD were significantly more likely to present with impaired laryngeal sensation. Additionally, impaired sensation in the oropharynx was associated with pooled salivary secretions in the pharynx.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play an essential role in plant defense against invading pathogens. Due to their biological properties, these molecules have been considered useful for drug development, as novel agents in disease therapeutics, applicable to both agriculture and medicine. New technologies of massive sequencing open opportunities to discover novel AMP encoding genes in wild plant species. This work aimed to identify cysteine-rich AMPs from Peltophorum dubium, a legume tree from South America. We performed whole-transcriptome sequencing of P. dubium seedlings followed by de novo transcriptome assembly, uncovering 78 AMP transcripts classified into five families: hevein-like, lipid-transfer proteins (LTPs), alpha hairpinins, defensins, and snakin/GASA (Giberellic Acid Stimulated in Arabidopsis) peptides. No transcripts with similarity to cyclotide or thionin genes were identified. Genomic DNA analysis by PCR confirmed the presence of 18 genes encoding six putative defensins and 12 snakin/GASA peptides and allowed the characterization of their exon-intron structure. The present work demonstrates that AMP prediction from a wild species is possible using RNA sequencing and de novo transcriptome assembly, regarding a starting point for studies focused on AMP gene evolution and expression. Moreover, this study allowed the detection of strong AMP candidates for drug development and novel biotechnological products.

Background: Members of the Triatoma brasiliensis complex can produce experimental and natural hybrids. Crossing experiments performed in the laboratory, with several combinations between species of that complex, revealed a gradient of reproductive affinities among them. However, little is known about the reproductive males’ choices when they have the possibility of copulating with females of different species, including interspecific and conspecific females, at the same time. In this unprecedented experiment, the sexual choices of the T. brasiliensis complex and Triatoma infestans males were observed. Methods: Virgin males and females of T. b. brasiliensis, T. sherlocki, and T. infestans, and females of T. juazeirensis were used. The experiment was developed in an arena in which one male, one conspecific female, and two non-conspecific females were observed for 15 minutes. The following variables of mating behavior were observed: the male’s choice for a female; displacement time (the time it took the male to move from its stall until it reached the female); the copula itself (number of attempts and its occurrence); and the type of rejection of copula by the female. Results: Males of T. sherlocki were faster in finding the females (conspecific and non-conspecific) than T. b. brasiliensis and T. infestans. Males of T. b. brasiliensis and T. sherlocki were able to copulate with conspecific females and other female species: T. infestans and T. b. brasiliensis/T. juazeirensis, respectively. While T. infestans copulated with conspecific females, and T. juazeirensis and T. b. brasiliensis females. Conclusion: The results suggest that the choice for the copula is not always towards conspecific females. In fact, the males of the three different species tested were able to copulate with their conspecific females and also with other female species, which may induce the formation of hybrids and greater genetic diversity. These findings pose new challenges to the understanding of the reproductive behavior and the evolutionary aspects of the Triatominae. Therefore, in areas of sympatry, if no ecological barriers exist, there is the possibility of natural hybridization, which might reflect in the epidemiological risks since the species studied occur in endemic areas for the Chagas disease.

Cellular death and survival signaling plays a key role in the progress of adverse cardiac remodeling after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Therapeutic strategies, such as co-treatment with beta-blocker carvedilol and thyroid hormones (THs), give rise to new approaches that can sustain the cellular homeostasis after AMI. Therefore, we sought to investigate the effects of carvedilol and TH co-administration on apoptosis and survival proteins and on cardiac remodeling after AMI. Male Wistar rats were distributed in 5 groups as follows: sham-operated group (SHAM), infarcted group (MI), infarcted plus carvedilol group (MI+C), infarcted plus TH group (MI+TH), and infarcted plus carvedilol and TH co-treatment group (MI+C+TH). Echocardiographic analysis was performed, and hearts were collected for western blot evaluation. The MI group presented systolic posterior wall thickness loss, an increase in the wall tension index, and an increase in atrial natriuretic peptide tissue levels than the SHAM group. However, in the MI+C+TH group, these parameters were equally to the SHAM group. Moreover, whereas the MI group showed Bax protein expression elevated in relation to the SHAM group, the MI+C+TH group presented Bax reduction and also Akt activation compared with the MI group. In addition, the MI+TH group revealed beta-1 adrenergic receptor (β1AR) upregulation compared with the MI and MI+C groups, whereas the MI+C+TH group presented lower levels of β1AR in relation to the SHAM and MI+TH groups. In conclusion, we suggest that carvedilol and TH co-administration may mediate its cardioprotective effects against adverse cardiac remodeling post-AMI through the Bax reduction, Akt activation, and β1AR decrease.

Pachira aquatica is a species used for medicinal and food purposes and has numerous phytochemicals that may have systemic toxic effects and damage to genetic material. This study aimed to evaluate acute and short-term oral toxicity, as well as genotoxic and clastogenic effects of oil extracted from P. aquatica (PASO) seeds in rats and Drosophila melanogaster. The results obtained with biochemical and hematological analyses did not show significant changes in any evaluated parameters when compared with reference values for the species used in the study. Data from the histopathological analysis corroborated results found in this study. These findings indicate low acute and short-term toxicity following oral PASO exposure in rats under the experimental conditions tested. Tests performed in rats showed that PASO did not present significant genotoxic or clastogenic effects on the cells analyzed with the three doses tested. Treatment with PASO in the offspring of HB crossing, which showed high cytochrome P450 levels, did not exhibit genotoxic activity, as demonstrated by the SMART test. These results suggest that products from the hepatic oil metabolism did not show genotoxicity under the conditions tested. Together, the results indicate that, under the experimental conditions tested, PASO is safe for repeated intake. As PASO exhibited low potential to cause harmful effects on living organisms, our study encourages further research aimed at assessing its pharmacological activity, since it is a widely consumed plant.

Summary Clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are varied in the general population. This study aimed to systematize the literature regarding clinical manifestations of patients with confirmed COVID-19. A systematic review of the literature was conducted. A total of 8070 scientific productions were found in the databases. Among the studies, 184 met the initial inclusion criteria, with a total of 114,046 patients. After complete reading, 32 studies that did not report clinical manifestations were excluded. The 152 publications finally included a total of 41,409 individuals from at least 23 countries and 26 different clinical manifestations were reported. In percentage terms, 6 symptoms had a general prevalence greater than or equal to 25%, namely, fever (58.66%), cough (54.52%), dyspnea (30.82%), malaise (29.75%), fatigue (28.16%) and sputum/secretion (25.33%). Neurological symptoms (20.82%), dermatological manifestations (20.45%), anorexia (20.26%), myalgia (16.9%), sneezing (14.71%), sore throat (14.41%), rhinitis (14.29%), goosebumps (13.49%), headache (12.17%), chest pain (11.49%) and diarrhea (9.59%) were other common symptoms. Only one study reported dermatological manifestations. The least frequent sign/symptom was hemoptysis (1.65%). In studies with more than 100 patients, the 3 main symptoms were fever (57.93%), cough (54.21%), and dyspnea (30.64%). Dermatological manifestations do not appear among the main symptoms. The identification of all clinical manifestations of COVID-19 is essential for an early diagnosis and the adoption of preventive measures. Resumo – Diversas estratégias de enfrentamento psicológico são aprimoradas a cada dia para mitigar os efeitos à saúde emocional em pessoas com câncer. Sabe-se que o tratamento desta doença exige alterações na rotina do paciente, da família e do cuidador, os quais necessitam desenvolver um repertório comportamental que auxilie na adaptação a este contexto e que gere mais informações sobre o obscuro lado das emoções escondidas destes pacientes. Assim, este trabalho vem apresentar um sistema de informação que tem por principal função compilar e apresentar mais claramente os dados deste enfrentamento de maneira que o paciente não se sinta investigado o tempo todo. O sistema de Informação é composto de três ferramentas integradas: um jogo digital, uma ferramenta de captura e extração de dados e uma ferramenta de visualização e análise destes dados. In this paper, we present new cytogenetic data for three species of the family Pentatomidae: Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas, 1851), Loxa viridis (Palisot de Beauvois, 1805), and Edessa collaris (Dallas, 1851). All studied species presented holocentric chromosomes and inverted meiosis for the sex chromosomes. D. melacanthus has 2n = 12 (10A + XY); L. viridis showed 2n = 14 (12A + XY); and E. collaris showed 2n = 14 (12A + XY). C-banding was performed for the first time in these species and revealed terminal and interstitial heterochromatic regions on the autosomes; DAPI/CMA3 staining showed different fluorescent patterns. In all species, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with 18S rDNA probe identified signals on one autosomal bivalent, this being the first report of FISH application in the species D. melacanthus and L. viridis. The results obtained add to those already existing in the literature, enabling a better understanding of the meiotic behavior of these insects.
