Of the nearly 40 endemics present on Ulleung Island, Campanula takesimana Nakai represents an anagenetically derived lineage of a continental progenitor, C. punctata Lam. Other than its low morphological divergence, little is known about the genetic diversity and population structure of the species pair or the geographical origin of C. takesimana. We sampled a total of 240 accessions in 22 populations, including one Dokdo Island population, of the two species, sequenced four noncoding chloroplast regions (rps16-trnK, trnQ-rps16, psbD-trnT, and psbM-trnD; 4482 bp), and assessed the genetic consequences of anagenetic speciation. Based on chloroplast DNA, we found substantially lower genetic diversity statistics for C. takesimana compared to its progenitor, significant population genetic structuring in insular derivative species, and significant molecular divergence between C. punctata and C. takesimana. Mutually exclusive haplotypes were found in the two species, and the haplotype network suggested that Ulleung Island haplotypes were derived from the Dokdo Island haplotype, which was originally derived from a C. punctata population in Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. This study pinpoints a very narrow geographical source area and suggests the potentially important role of Dokdo Island as an initial stepping stone for Ulleung Island endemics.

Scrophularia takesimensis is a critically endangered endemic species of Ulleung Island, Korea. A previous molecular phylogenetic study based on nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences with very limited sampling suggested that it is most closely related to the clade comprising S. alata and S. grayanoides. To determine the origin of S. takesimensis, we sampled a total of 171 accessions including S. takesimensis (9 populations and 63 individuals) and two closely related species, S. alata (11 populations and 68 individuals) and S. grayanoides (5 populations and 40 individuals) from eastern Asia and sequenced ITS and two chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) non-coding regions. Previously sequenced representative species of Scrophularia (109 taxa for ITS and 80 taxa for cpDNA) were combined with our data set and analyzed. While the global scale ITS phylogenetic tree suggests monophyly for each of the three eastern Asian species, S. takesimensis appears to be more closely related (albeit weakly) to a clade containing eastern North American/Caribbean species than to either S. alata or S. grayanoides. By contrast, the global scale cpDNA phylogenetic tree demonstrates that the eastern North America/Caribbean clade is sister to a clade comprising the three eastern Asian species. In addition, the monophyletic S. takesimensis is deeply embedded within paraphyletic S. alata, sharing its most recent common ancestor with populations from Japan/Sakhalin. Two divergent, geographically structured cp haplotype groups within S. takesimensis suggest at least two independent introductions from different source areas. A new and accurate chromosome number of S. takesimensis (2n = 94) is reported and some conservation strategies are discussed.

The subtribe Saussureinae is a highly speciose group with more than 600 species distributed in the Northern Hemisphere and is particularly species-rich at the high mountains of central and eastern Asia. Saussurea and Jurinea are the two main genera described within the subtribe. However, up to 15 satellite genera are recognized in some recent taxonomic treatments with an analytical viewpoint. For the first time, we carried out a complete sampling to clarify generic boundaries based on a well-resolved phylogeny of Saussureinae. We employed a Hyb-Seq technique that targets 1061 nuclear conserved ortholog loci designed for Compositae. After a filtering of potential paralogs, 588 loci were retained to infer phylogenetic trees under concatenation and coalescence approaches. High branch support resolution was recovered at the generic level, but a non-monophyletic pattern was detected for most of the genera as they are currently circumscribed. Accordingly, we propose a new generic delimitation based on the three main clades recovered in the backbone tree, which are also in agreement with morphological evidence: Dolomiaea, Saussurea, and Jurinea. Following this classification into three genera, 18 new combinations are proposed. The steroid hormones act by binding to their receptors and subsequently interacting with coactivators. Several classes of coactivators have been identified and shown to be essential in estradiol (E2) responsiveness. The major coregulators are the p160 steroid receptor coactivator (SRC) family. Although the function of SRCs in other organs has been well studied, it has not been thoroughly studied in the placenta. In addition, the correlation between preeclampsia (PE) and SRCs has not been examined previously. Therefore, we compared the expression patterns of SRCs in normal and PE placentas. In human PE placental tissues, SRC-1 mRNA, and protein levels were downregulated in the PE group. In addition, to assess the expression of SRCs in a PE environment, we used Reduced Uterine Perfusion Pressure (RUPP) model and placental cells were cultured in hypoxia condition. SRC-1 proteins were reduced in the placenta of PE-like rat RUPP model. Furthermore, SRCs proteins were significantly downregulated in hypoxia-grown placental cells. To examine the interaction between estrogen receptors (ERs) and SRC-1 protein, we performed co-immunoprecipitation. The interaction of SRC-1 with ERα was significantly stronger than that with ERβ. In PE placenta, the interaction of both ERα and ERβ with SRC-1 was stronger than that in normal placenta. In summary, our results demonstrate that expression levels of SRC-1, not SRC-2 and SRC-3, were decreased in hypoxia-induced PE placenta, which may further reduce the signaling of sex steroid hormones such as E2. The dysregulated signaling of E2 by SRC-1 expression could be associated with the PE placental symptoms of patients.

The first complete chloroplast genome sequence of Hylotelephium verticillatum, was reported in this study. The plastome size was 151,398 bp in total length, with one large single copy (LSC; 82,951 bp), one small single copy (SSC; 16,839 bp), and two inverted repeat (IR) regions (IRa and IRb, each with 25,804 bp). The overall GC content was 37.8% and the genome contained 128 genes, including 85 protein-coding, 37 transfer RNA, and 6 ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis of 15 representative plastomes within the family Crassulaceae suggests that H. verticillatum is sister to congeneric H. ewersii.

The Cardueae Radiations Group., Target enrichment is a cost-effective sequencing technique that holds promise for elucidating evolutionary relationships in fast-evolving lineages. However, potential biases and impact of bioinformatic sequence treatments in phylogenetic inference have not been thoroughly explored yet. Here, we investigate this issue with an ultimate goal to shed light into a highly diversified group of Compositae (Asteraceae) constituted by four main genera: Arctium, Cousinia, Saussurea, and Jurinea. Specifically, we compared sequence data extraction methods implemented in two easy-to-use workflows, PHYLUCE and HybPiper, and assessed the impact of two filtering practices intended to reduce phylogenetic noise. In addition, we compared two phylogenetic inference methods: (1) the concatenation approach, in which all loci were concatenated in a supermatrix; and (2) the coalescence approach, in which gene trees were produced independently and then used to construct a species tree under coalescence assumptions. Here we confirm the usefulness of the set of 1061 COS targets (a nuclear conserved orthology loci set developed for the Compositae) across a variety of taxonomic levels. Intergeneric relationships were completely resolved: there are two sister groups, Arctium-Cousinia and Saussurea-Jurinea, which are in agreement with a morphological hypothesis. Intrageneric relationships among species of Arctium, Cousinia, and Saussurea are also well defined. Conversely, conflicting species relationships remain for Jurinea. Methodological choices significantly affected phylogenies in terms of topology, branch length, and support. Across all analyses, the phylogeny obtained using HybPiper and the strictest scheme of removing fast-evolving sites was estimated as the optimal. Regarding methodological choices, we conclude that: (1) trees obtained under the coalescence approach are topologically more congruent between them than those inferred using the concatenation approach; (2) refining treatments only improved support values under the concatenation approach; and (3) branch support values are maximized when fast-evolving sites are removed in the concatenation approach, and when a higher number of loci is analyzed in the coalescence approach., Financial support from the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Project CGL2015-66703-P and Ph.D. grant to Sonia Herrando-Moraira) and the Catalan government (“Ajuts a grups consolidats” 2014/SGR/514 and 2017-SGR1116) is gratefully acknowledged.

Genus Rubus represents the second largest genus of the family Rosaceae in Taiwan, with 41 currently recognized species across three subgenera (Chamaebatus, Idaoeobatus, and Malochobatus). Despite previous morphological and cytological studies, little is known regarding the overall phylogenetic relationships among the Rubus species in Taiwan, and their relationships to congeneric species in continental China. We characterized eight complete plastomes of Taiwan endemic Rubus species: subg. Idaeobatus (R. glandulosopunctatus, R. incanus, R. parviaraliifolius, R rubroangustifolius, R. taitoensis, and R. taiwanicolus) and subg. Malachobatus (R. kawakamii and R. laciniastostipulatus) to determine their phylogenetic relationships. The plastomes were highly conserved and the size of the complete plastome sequences ranged from 155,566 to 156,236 bp. The overall GC content ranged from 37.0 to 37.3%. The frequency of codon usage showed similar patterns among species, and 29 of the 73 common protein-coding genes were positively selected. The comparative phylogenomic analysis identified four highly variable intergenic regions (rps16/trnQ, petA/psbJ, rpl32/trnL-UAG, and trnT-UGU/trnL-UAA). Phylogenetic analysis of 31 representative complete plastomes within the family Rosaceae revealed three major lineages within Rubus in Taiwan. However, overall phylogenetic relationships among endemic species require broader taxon sampling to gain new insights into infrageneric relationships and their plastome evolution.

Dendroseris D. Don comprises eleven species endemic to the Juan Fernandez islands in Chile. They demonstrate spectacular and unusual growth forms of rosette trees with extremely variable morphology and occupy wide ecological ranges on the islands. These unique plants are now highly threatened with extinction with very small population sizes, typically consisting of 10 or fewer individuals in wild. Despite morphological and ecological divergence among species of Dendroseris, their monophyly has been supported in previous studies, but with little resolution among subgeneric groups. We assembled seven complete plastome sequences from seven species of Dendroseris, including representatives from three subgenera, and carried out comparative phylogenomic analyses. The plastomes are highly conserved in gene content and order, with size ranging from 152,199 to 152,619 bp and containing 130 genes, (87 coding genes, 6 rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes). Plastid phylogenomic analyses based on both the complete plastome sequences and 81 concatenated coding genes only show Dendroseris nested within Sonchus sensu lato, and also that inter-subgeneric relationships are fully resolved. Subg. Phoenicoseris is resolved as sister to the remaining species of the genus and a sister relationship between the two subgenera Dendroseris and Rea. Ten mutation hotspots from LSC and SSC regions and variable SSRs are identified as potential chloroplast markers for future phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies of Sonchus and related groups.

Due to substantial population decline, the Korean orchid P. scolopendrifolia is considered endangered and highly threatened. Like many endangered species, it is vulnerable to biological and anthropogenic threats that can lead to the loss of genetic diversity and, ultimately, extinction. Therefore, the assessment of genetic diversity and population genetic structure is imperative for conservation. In this study, we newly developed 15 polymorphic microsatellite markers. Analyses of genetic diversity and population genetic structure that included 182 samples from 11 populations were conducted using microsatellite markers and four noncoding regions of chloroplast DNA. Our study revealed a relatively low level of genetic diversity (Ho = 0.529, He = 0.356), albeit harboring with private alleles based on microsatellite genotyping data, and high haplotype diversities based on chloroplast DNA sequences data. The results of STRUCTURE and PCoA based on microsatellite genotyping data showed population differentiations. An AMOVA based on chloroplast DNA sequence data further corroborated these conclusions, indicating about 70% of variations found among populations. Low genetic diversity and divergence among the population might have been caused by factors, such as asexual reproduction, demographic events (bottleneck and population expansion), geographic isolation, and low gene flow. The development and implication of conservation strategies and management of P. scolopendrifolia are proposed based on these results.

Premise The common sowthistle, Sonchus oleraceus (Asteraceae), is a globally invasive weedy species. In order to investigate its genetic diversity, population genetic structure, and evolutionary history, we developed and characterized nuclear simple sequence repeat markers (SSRs or microsatellites). Methods and Results Seventeen microsatellite primer pairs were developed based on the Illumina sequence data. Ten developed SSR loci were polymorphic in four populations sampled from broad geographical regions. The number of alleles per locus ranged from one to 11, and the levels of observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.000 to 1.000 and from 0.000 to 0.801, respectively. Up to 82% of the newly developed primer pairs were successfully amplified in the congeneric taxa S. asper, S. asper subsp. glaucescens, S. canariensis, and S. palmensis. Conclusions The SSR markers developed in this study will be useful for future population genetic studies on S. oleraceus and other congeneric species.

The first complete chloroplast genome sequence of Sonchus arvensis, a herbaceous perennial, and its phylogenetic position relative to a member of the annual weedy and woody perennial species of Sonchus were reported in this study. Here, we assembled the complete plastome sequence of 151,967 base pairs (bp) in length, comprising 84,251 bp of a large single copy (LSC) and 18,184 bp (SSC) of small single copy confined between 24,766 bp of inverted repeats (IR). The genome contained 130 genes, including 87 protein-coding genes, six ribosomal RNA, and 37 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content was 37.6% (LSC, 35.8%; SSC, 31.5%; IRs, 43.0%). Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that perennial S. arvensis is sister to the clade containing the weedy species of Sonchus.

As with many other ornamental and cultivated plants that have been under human selection and cultivation for a long time, it has been a major challenge to trace back the complex evolutionary history of flowering cherry, Prunus yedoensis. This challenge has been further amplified by great morphological similarities, little molecular divergence, frequent natural and artificial hybridization, and poor documentation of breeding history among cultivated and wild flowering cherries. The origin and taxonomic distinction between wild P. yedoensis from Jeju Island, Korea, and one of the most popular cultivated flowering cherries, P. × yedoensis "Somei-yoshino" has been a controversy for the past few decades. We sampled many areas extensively, and using four different molecular markers we provided evidence for their independent origin. Wild P. yedoensis in Korea originated from multiple bidirectional hybridization events between two sympatric species, P. spachiana f. ascendens as the maternal species and P. serrulata var. spontanea/P. serrulata var. quelpaertensis as the most probable paternal species. On the contrary, our results supported a single artificial hybrid origin of P. × yedoensis "Somei-yoshino" from cultivated P. spachiana f. ascendens as the maternal species and P. speciosa, a species endemic to Izu Islands, as the paternal species. Based on extensive sampling, we provided strong evidence that wild and cultivated P. yedoensis are distinct taxonomic entities that have originated from different evolutionary processes. A potential for the development of new cultivars from wild P. yedoensis and conservation of diverse germplasms in situ insular setting and ex situ should be explored in the future.

Previous phylogenetic studies have suggested that Rubus takesimensis (Rosaceae), which is endemic to Ulleung Island, Korea, is closely related to R. crataegifolius, which is broadly distributed across East Asia. A recent phylogeographic study also suggested the possible polyphyletic origins of R. takesimensis from multiple source populations of its continental progenitor R. crataegifolius in China, Japan, Korea, and the Russian Far East. However, even though the progenitor-derivative relationship between R. crataegifolius and R. takesimensis has been established, little is known about the chloroplast genome (i.e., plastome) evolution of anagenetically derived species on oceanic islands and their continental progenitor species. In the present study, we characterized the complete plastome of R. takesimensis and compared it to those of R. crataegifolius and four other Rubus species. The R. takesimensis plastome was 155,760 base pairs (bp) long, a total of 46 bp longer than the plastome of R. crataegifolius (28 from LSC and 18 from SSC). No structural or content rearrangements were found between the species pairs. Four highly variable intergenic regions (rpl32/trnL, rps4/trnT, trnT/trnL, and psbZ/trnG) were identified between R. takesimensis and R. crataegifolius. Compared to the plastomes of other congeneric species (R. corchorifolius, R. fockeanus, and R. niveus), six highly variable intergenic regions (ndhC/psaC, rps16/trnQ, trnK/rps16, trnL/trnF, trnM/atpE, and trnQ/psbK) were also identified. A total of 116 simple sequence repeats (SSRs), including 48 mononucleotide, 64 dinucleotide, and four trinucleotide repeat motifs were characterized in R. takesimensis. The plastome resources generated by the present study will help to elucidate plastome evolution within the genus and to resolve phylogenetic relationships within highly complex and reticulated lineages. Phylogenetic analysis supported both the monophyly of Rubus and the sister relationship between R. crataegifolius and R. takesimensis.

Prickly sow thistle, Sonchus asper (L.) Hill, and common sow thistle, Sonchus oleraceus L., are noxious weeds. Probably originating from the Mediterranean region, they have become widespread species. They share similar morphology and are closely related. However, they differ in their chromosome numbers and the precise relationship between them remains uncertain. Understanding their chloroplast genome structure and evolution is an important initial step toward determining their phylogenetic relationships and analyzing accelerating plant invasion processes on a global scale. We assembled four accessions of chloroplast genomes (two S. asper and two S. oleraceus) by the next generation sequencing approach and conducted comparative genomic analyses. All the chloroplast genomes were highly conserved. Their sizes ranged from 151,808 to 151,849 bp, containing 130 genes including 87 coding genes, 6 rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the whole chloroplast genome sequences showed that S. asper shares a recent common ancestor with S. oleraceus and suggested its likely involvement in a possible amphidiploid origin of S. oleraceus. In total, 79 simple sequence repeats and highly variable regions were identified as the potential chloroplast markers to determine genetic variation and colonization patterns of Sonchus species.

We describe a new cliff-dwelling species within Sonchus (Asteraceae): Sonchus boulosii and analyze its systematic position and evolutionary significance; in addition, we provide a key to the species of Sonchus in Morocco. Both morphological and ecological characteristics suggest a close relationship of S. boulosii with taxa of section Pustulati. However, ITS nrDNA and cpDNA matK markers indicate its uncertain position within the genus, but clear genetic differentiation from the remaining major clades. ITS phylogenetic trees show that likely evolutionary shifts to rocky habitat took place at least five times within genus Sonchus and that sect. Pustulati and S. boulosii clades have a clearly independent evolutionary origin. We postulate that the strong resemblance of S. boulosii to other rocky species reflects a phenomenon of homoplasy, probably driven by parallel evolutionary adaptations to the severe ecological constraints of its cliff face habitat. Therefore, a new section is also described, which includes S. boulosii as its sole representative: section Pulvinati. According to phylogenetic trees, the new clade may share its common ancestor with the clade comprising sections Maritimi and Arvenses, from which it is widely divergent in morphology and ecology, with the exception of Sonchus novae-zelandiae. However, the latter is a derived taxon, with high level of polyploidy unlike S. boulosii that shows 2n = 18, basal chromosome number of the genus. Since sections Pulvinati and Pustulati seem to be quite old in Sonchus, we also hypothesize that some similarities, such as fruit morphology, may reflect the persistence of some primitive characteristics.

A 25-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with a painful and swollen right forearm. She had just sustained an injury from an accident during which her arm was tightly wound by a rope as she was lowering a net from a fishing boat. Before being released, her arm was rigidly trapped in the rope for approximately ten minutes. Radiographs revealed anterior dislocation of the radial head that was accompanied by plastic deformation of the proximal ulna, manifested as a reversal of the proximal dorsal angulation of the ulna (PUDA); suggested a Monteggia equivalent fracture. With the patient under general anesthesia, we reduced the radial head by posterior compression at 90° of elbow flexion and at neutral rotation of the forearm. However, the reduction was easily lost and the elbow re-dislocated with even slight supination or extension of the arm. After the osteotomy of the ulnar deformity to restore the PUDA to normal, the reduction remained stable even with manipulation of the arm. We found that the patient could exercise a full range of motion without pain at the 3-month follow-up, and neither residual instability nor degenerative changes were observed at the final 3-year follow-up.

Cultivated flowering cherries (Prunus subgenus Cerasus), which are one of the most popular ornamental trees around the world, have been developed through artificial hybridizations among wild flowering cherries. Among the hundreds of cultivars of flowering cherries, Prunus ×yedoensis ‘Somei-yoshino’ is the most common and widespread. However, its origin and genetic relationship to wild P. yedoensis, naturally occurring on Jeju Island, South Korea, have long been debated. We used sequence polymorphisms in eight chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) noncoding regions to distinguish wild and cultivated flowering cherries among 104 individuals (55 accessions). We were able to distinguish two distinct groups, one corresponding to wild P. yedoensis collections from Jeju Island and the other collections of cultivated P. ×yedoensis from Korea, Japan, and the United States. The chlorotype diversity of wild P. yedoensis in Jeju Island and cultivated P. ×yedoensis collections in the United States was quite high, suggesting multiple natural hybrid origins and long history of cultivation from different original sources, respectively.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Forsythia saxatilis Nakai (Oleaceae), one of endemic and vulnerable species of Korea, was determined. The genome size was found to be 156,354 bp in length, and to contain a pair of 25,711 bp inverted repeat, which were separated by one small single copy (SSC; 17,838 bp) and one large single copy (LSC; 87,094 bp). The cp genome contained 131 genes, including 88 coding genes, 6 rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes. The overall GC content of the chloroplast genome was 37.8%. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the position of F. saxatilis as being sister to the rare Korean monotypic endemic genus Abeliophyllum distichum.

The first complete chloroplast genome sequence of Korean insular endemic to Ulleung-do Island, Zabelia insularis, was reported in this study. The plastome size was 158,100 bp in total length, with one large single copy (90,529 bp), one small single copy (17,235 bp), and two inverted repeat (IR) regions (IRa and IRb, each with 25,168 bp). The overall GC content was 38.3% and the genome contained 130 genes, including 83 protein-coding, 37 transfer RNA, and 8 ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis of 15 representative plastomes within the Caprifoliaceae suggests that Z. insularis is closely related to the species in the genus Patrinia.

Cotoneaster wilsonii Nakai is an endangered species endemic to Ulleung Island, Korea. Here we reported the first complete chloroplast gnome sequences of C. wilsonii, which is 159,999 bp in total length with the large single copy (LSC) region of 87,868 bp, the small single copy (SSC) region of 19,335 bp, and two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,399 bp. The plastome contains 131 genes, including 84 protein-coding, eight ribosomal RNA, and 37 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content is 42.6% and those in the LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 34.2, 30.3, and 42.6%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of 21 representative plastomes within the family Rosaceae suggests strongly the monophyly of Cotoneaster and C. wilsonii being sister to the clade of Cotoneaster franchetii and Cotoneaster horizontalis.

Symplocarpus, a skunk cabbage genus, includes two sister groups, which are drastically different in life history traits and thermogenesis, as follows: The nonthermogenic summer flowering S. nipponicus and thermogenic early spring flowering S. renifolius. Although the molecular basis of thermogenesis and complete chloroplast genome (plastome) of thermogenic S. renifolius have been well characterized, very little is known for that of S. nipponicus. We sequenced the complete plastomes of S. nipponicus sampled from Japan and Korea and compared them with that of S. renifolius sampled from Korea. The nonthermogenic S. nipponicus plastomes from Japan and Korea had 158,322 and 158,508 base pairs, respectively, which were slightly shorter than the thermogenic plastome of S. renifolius. No structural or content rearrangements between the species pairs were found. Six highly variable noncoding regions (psbC/trnS, petA/psbJ, trnS/trnG, trnC/petN, ycf4/cemA, and rpl3/rpl22) were identified between S. nipponicus and S. renifolius and 14 hot-spot regions were also identified at the subfamily level. We found a similar total number of SSR (simple sequence repeat) motifs in two accessions of S. nipponicus sampled from Japan and Korea. Phylogenetic analysis supported the basal position of subfamily Orontioideae and the monophyly of genus Symplocarpus, and also revealed an unexpected evolutionary relationship between S. nipponicus and S. renifolius.

Background: Preterm birth is strongly associated with increasing mortality, incidence of disability, intensity of neonatal care required, and consequent costs. We examined the clinical utility of the potential preterm birth risk factors from admitted pregnant women with symptomatic preterm labor and developed prediction models to obtain information for prolonging pregnancies. Methods: This retrospective study included pregnant women registered with the KOrean Preterm collaboratE Network (KOPEN) who had symptomatic preterm labor, between 16 and 34 gestational weeks, in a tertiary care center from March to November 2016. Demographics, obstetric and medical histories, and basic laboratory test results obtained at admission were evaluated. The preterm birth probability was assessed using a nomogram and decision tree according to birth gestational age: early preterm, before 32 weeks; late preterm, between 32 and 37 weeks; and term, after 37 weeks. Results: Of 879 registered pregnant women, 727 who gave birth at a designated institute were analyzed. The rates of early preterm, late preterm, and term births were 18.16%, 44.02%, and 37.83%, respectively. With the developed nomogram, the concordance index for early and late preterm births was 0.824 (95% CI: 0.785-0.864) and 0.717 (95% CI: 0.675-0.759) respectively. Preterm birth was significantly more likely among women with multiple pregnancy and had water leakage due to premature rupture of membrane. The prediction rate for preterm birth based on decision tree analysis was 86.9% for early preterm and 73.9% for late preterm; the most important nodes are watery leakage for early preterm birth and multiple pregnancy for late preterm birth. Conclusion: This study aims to develop an individual overall probability of preterm birth based on specific risk factors at critical gestational times of preterm birth using a range of clinical variables recorded at the initial hospital admission. Therefore, these models may be useful for clinicians and patients in clinical decision-making and for hospitalization or lifestyle coaching in an outpatient setting.

Premise Nuclear microsatellite markers were developed for Saussurea polylepis (Asteraceae), a vulnerable species with very limited distribution in a few southwestern continental islands of the Korean peninsula, in order to facilitate future population genetic studies. Methods and Results Based on the Illumina sequence data, a total of 21 microsatellite primer pairs were designed and tested for their suitability. Nineteen of these primers, with two to 11 alleles per locus, were polymorphic in three natural populations of S. polylepis. The levels of expected and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.000 to 0.842 and 0.000 to 0.933, respectively. Sixteen of these simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were successfully cross-amplified in five congeneric species, namely S. gracilis, S. grandifolia, and S. tanakae for all 21 loci, and S. maximowiczii and S. pulchella for 18 loci. Conclusions The SSR markers developed here will be useful for future population genetic studies on S. polylepis and related species.

The family Mytilidae is a family of bivalve mussels that are distributed worldwide in diverse marine habitats. Within the family, classification systems and phylogenetic relationships among subfamilies remain not yet fully resolved. In this study, we newly determined 9 mitochondrial genome sequences from 7 subfamilies: Bathymodiolus thermophilus (Bathymodiolinae), Modiolus nipponicus (Modiolinae), Lithophaga curta (the first representative of Lithophaginae), Brachidontes mutabilis (Brachidontinae), Mytilisepta virgata (Brachidontinae), Mytilisepta keenae (Brachidontinae), Crenomytilus grayanus (Mytilinae), Gregariella coralliophaga (Crenellinae), and Septifer bilocularis (the first representative of Septiferinae). Phylogenetic trees using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods for 28 mitochondrial genomes (including 19 previously published sequences) showed two major clades with high support values: Clade 1 ((Bathymodiolinae + Modiolinae) + (Lithophaginae + Limnoperninae)) and Clade 2 (((Mytilinae + Crenellinae) + Septiferinae) + Brachidontinae). The position of the genus Lithophaga (representing Lithophaginae) differed from a previously published molecular phylogeny. Divergence time analysis with a molecular clock indicated that lineage splitting among the major subfamilies of Mytilidae (including the habitat transition from marine to freshwater environments by ancestral Limnoperninae) occurred in the Mesozoic period, coinciding with high diversification rates of marine fauna during that time. This is the first mitochondrial genome-based phylogenetic study of the Mytilidae that covers nearly all subfamily members, excluding the subfamily Dacrydiinae.

The woody Sonchus alliance consists primarily of woody species of the genus Sonchus (subgenus Dendrosonchus, family Asteraceae). Most members of the alliance are endemic to the oceanic archipelagos in the phytogeographic region of Macaronesia. They display extensive morphological, ecological, and anatomical diversity, likely caused by the diverse habitats on islands and rapid adaptive radiation. As a premier example of adaptive radiation and insular woodiness of species endemic to oceanic islands, the alliance has been the subject of intensive evolutionary studies. While phylogenetic studies suggested that it is monophyletic and its major lineages radiated rapidly early in the evolutionary history of this group, genetic mechanisms of speciation and genomic evolution within the alliance remain to be investigated. We first attempted to address chloroplast (cp) genome evolution by conducting comparative genomic analysis of three representative endemic species (Sonchus acaulis, Sonchus canariensis, and Sonchus webbii) from the Canary Islands. Despite extensive morphological, anatomical, and ecological differences among them, their cp genomes were highly conserved in gene order and content, ranging from 152,071 to 152,194 bp in total length. The number of repeat variations and six highly variable regions were identified as valuable molecular markers. Phylogenetic analysis of 32 species in the family Asteraceae revealed the phylogenetic position of the woody Sonchus alliance within the tribe Cichorieae and the sister relationship between the weedy Sonchus oleraceus and the alliance.

The complete chloroplast genome sequences of newly discovered cliff-dwelling species of Sonchus, S. boulosii, were reported in this study. The S. boulosii plastome was 152,016 bp long, with the large single copy (LSC) region of 83,988 bp, the small single copy (SSC) region of 18,566 bp, and two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 24,731 bp. The plastome contained 130 genes, including 88 protein-coding, six ribosomal RNA, and 36 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content was 31.2%. Phylogenetic analysis of 12 representative plastomes within the order Cichorieae suggests that S. boulosii is closely related to S. oleraceus. Species belonging to Rosa section Synstylae (Rosaceae) are mainly distributed in East Asia, and represent recently diverged lineages within the genus. Over decades, inferring phylogenetic relationships within section Synstylae have been exceptional challenges, due to short branch lengths and low support values. Of approximately 36 species in the section Synstylae, Rosa multiflora, Rosa luciae and Rosa maximowicziana are widely distributed in the Sino-Japanese floristic region. In this study, we assembled chloroplast genomes of these three species to compare the genomic features within section Synstylae, and to compare with other infrageneric groups. We found that three Rosa sect. Synstylae species had lost infA genes with pseudogenization, and they were almost identical to each other. Two protein-coding gene regions (ndhF and ycf1) and five non-coding regions (5&rsquo, matK-trnK, psbI-trnS-trnG, rps16-trnG, rpoB-trnC, and rps4-trnT) were identified as being highly informative markers. Within three section Synstylae chloroplast genomes, 85 simple sequence repeat (SSR) motifs were detected, of which at least 13 motifs were identified to be effective markers. The phylogenetic relationships of R. multiflora, R. luciae and R. maximowicziana could not be resolved, even with chloroplast genome-wide data. This study reveals the chloroplast genomic data of Rosa sect. Synstylae, and it provides valuable markers for DNA barcoding and phylogenetic analyses for further studies.

The purplish bifurcate mussel Mytilisepta virgata is widely distributed and represents one of the major components of the intertidal community in the northwestern Pacific (NWP). Here, we characterized population genetic structure of NWP populations throughout nearly their whole distribution range using both mitochondrial (mtDNA cox1) and nuclear (ITS1) markers. Population genetic analyses for mtDNA cox 1 sequences revealed two monophyletic lineages (i.e., southern and northern lineages) geographically distributed according to the two different surface water temperature zones in the NWP. The timing of the lineage split is estimated at the Pliocene- mid-Pleistocene (5.49-1.61 Mya), which is consistent with the timing of the historical isolation of the East Sea/Sea of Japan from the South and East China Seas due to sea level decline during glacial cycles. Historical sea level fluctuation during the Pliocene-Pleistocene and subsequent adaptation of mussels to different surface water temperature zones may have contributed to shaping the contemporary genetic diversity and deep divergence of the two mitochondrial lineages. In contrast to mtDNA sequences, a clear lineage split between the two mitochondrial lineages was not found in ITS1 sequences, which showed a star-like structure composed of a mixture of southern and northern mitochondrial lineages. Possible reasons for this type of mito-nuclear discordance include stochastic divergence in the coalescent processes of the two molecular markers, or balancing selection under different marine environments. Cryptic speciation cannot be ruled out from these results, and future work using genomic analyses is required to address whether the thermal physiology of these mussels corresponds to the deep divergence of their mitochondrial genes and to test for the existence of morphologically indistinguishable but genetically separate cryptic species.

Beech trees of the genus Fagus (Fagaceae) are monoecious and distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. They represent an important component of mixed broad-leaved evergreen&ndash, deciduous forests and are an economically important source of timber. Despite their ecological and economical importance, however, little is known regarding the overall plastome evolution among Fagus species in East Asia. In particular, the taxonomic position and status of F. multinervis, a beech species endemic to Ulleung Island of Korea, remains unclear even today. Therefore, in this study, we characterized four newly completed plastomes of East Asian Fagus species (one accession each of F. crenata and F. multinervis and two accessions of F. japonica). Moreover, we performed phylogenomic analyses comparing these four plastomes with F. sylvatica (European beech) plastome. The four plastomes were highly conserved, and their size ranged from 158,163 to 158,348 base pair (bp). The overall GC content was 37.1%, and the sequence similarity ranged from 99.8% to 99.99%. Codon usage patterns were similar among species, and 7 of 77 common protein-coding genes were under positive selection. Furthermore, we identified five highly variable hotspot regions of the Fagus plastomes (ccsA/ndhD, ndhD/psaC, ndhF/rpl32, trnS-GCU/trnG-UCC, and ycf1). Phylogenetic analysis revealed the monophyly of Fagus as well as early divergence of the subgenus Fagus and monophyletic Engleriana. Finally, phylogenetic results supported the taxonomic distinction of F. multinervis from its close relatives F. engleriana and F. japonica. However, the sister species and geographic origin of F. multinervis on Ulleung Island could not be determined.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the IT resources on the work efficiency and corporate performance in Mobile Smart-Work Environment with IT convergence Technology by applying the Resource-Based View. The study has an academic meaning by empirically analyzing the effects of factors identified based on the existing study on the IT resources in Mobile Smart-Work, and practical implications to identify how the significance of the Mobile Smart-Work used as a platform of variety industries in manufacturing, logistics, service, distribution, finance, public institutions, and so on positively affects improvement of corporate efficiency and performance. The results showed that IT Infrastructure and IT skills in the Mobile Smart-work environment were found to bring positive effects on individual work efficiency, and IT skills had positive influence on team work efficiency. Also, we confirmed the individual and team work efficiency positively affect financial and market performance of business firms. Finally, we expect that business firm equipped with IT resources in the Mobile Smart-Work environment with IT convergence Technology. It can improve this work efficiency and the performance, which leads to strengthening the core competency.

Potentilla dickinsii var. glabrata and Spiraea insularis in the family Rosaceae are species endemic to Ulleung Island, Korea, the latter of which is listed as endangered. In this study, we characterized the complete plastomes of these two species and compared these with previously reported plastomes of other Ulleung Island endemic species of Rosaceae (Cotoneaster wilsonii, Prunus takesimensis, Rubus takesimensis, and Sorbus ulleungensis). The highly conserved complete plastomes of P. dickinsii var. glabrata and S. insularis are 158,637 and 155,524 base pairs with GC contents of 37% and 36.9%, respectively. Comparative phylogenomic analysis identified three highly variable intergenic regions (trnT-UGU/trnL-UAA, rpl32/trnL-UAG, and ndhF/rpl32) and one variable genic region (ycf1). Only 14 of the 75 protein-coding genes have been subject to strong purifying selection. Phylogenetic analysis of 23 representative plastomes within the Rosaceae supported the monophyly of Potentilla and the sister relationship between Potentilla and Fragaria and indicated that S. insularis is sister to a clade containing Cotoneaster, Malus, Pyrus, and Sorbus. The plastome resources generated in this study will contribute to elucidating the plastome evolution of insular endemic Rosaceae on Ulleung Island and also in assessing the genetic consequences of anagenetic speciation for various endemic lineages on the island.

Prunus ×yedoensis Matsum. ‘Somei-yoshino’ is the most common and widespread cultivar of the ornamental flowering cherries. We hereby report its complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequences generated by whole-genome next-generation sequencing approach. The cp genome size was 157,792 bp in length consisting of four regions; large single-copy region (85,914 bp), small single-copy region (19,120 bp), and a pair of inverted repeat regions (26,379 bp). The genome contained a total of 131 genes, including 86 coding genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes. A total of 92 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were detected within the cp genome. Its molecular features were compared with the complete cp genome of wild P. yedoensis, which occurs rarely in natural habitats of Mt. Halla in Jeju Island, Korea, displaying nearly indistinguishable morphology as P. ×yedoensis ‘Somei-yoshino’. Although both cp genomes were structured highly alike, the sequence variations between them were revealed in several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Using additional individuals of wild and cultivated flowering cherries, PCR amplification confirmed that those SNPs were phylogenetically informative, providing distinction between wild and cultivated flowering cherries. In future study, the SNPs and SSRs reported in this study could be used to identify wild individuals from morphologically identical cultivars of flowering cherries and also to conserve the genetic diversity of wild flowering cherries in Jeju Island.

Alternating glacial and interglacial periods during the Quaternary have dramatically affected the distribution and population genetic structure of plant and animal species throughout the northern hemisphere. Surprisingly, little is known about the post-glacial recolonization history of wetland herbaceous perennials that are widely distributed in the understory of deciduous or mixed deciduous-evergreen forests in eastern North America. In this study, we investigated infraspecific variation among 32 populations of skunk cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus, to test the hypothesis that the extant species diversity of skunk cabbage is the result of a post-glacial range expansion from southern refugia during the Quaternary Ice Age. A total of 4041 base pairs (bp) of the chloroplast intergenic spacer region (cpDNA) was sequenced from 485 individuals sampled from glaciated (18 populations, 275 individuals) and unglaciated (14 populations, 210 individuals) regions east and west of the Appalachian Mountains. Haplotype number, haplotype diversity, and nucleotide diversity were calculated, and genetic variation within and among populations was assessed by analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA). The geographic pattern of genetic differentiation was further investigated with a spatial analysis of molecular variance (SAMOVA). A total of eight haplotypes and three genetic groups (SAMOVA) were recovered and a much higher haplotype number (eight haplotypes) and haplotype diversity (0.7425) was observed in unglaciated compared to glaciated populations (five haplotypes, haplotype diversity = 0.6099). All haplotypes found in glaciated regions represented a subset of haplotypes found in unglaciated regions. Haplotypes of S. foetidus likely diverged during the Tertiary (mid-Miocene and late Pliocene), predating the last glacial maximum (LGM). Predictions based on ecological niche modeling (ENM) suggested that there was considerably less suitable habitat for skunk cabbage during the LGM, and the habitat range was further south compared to the current distribution. Reduced variation and a subset of haplotypes in glaciated regions suggest a founder effect associated with range expansion via long-distance seed dispersal. Our results do not support the “Driftless Area” scenario for the northern refugium, rather the data suggest a “Northeastern” refugium near the southernmost extent of the LGM.

The first complete chloroplast genome sequences of Korean endemic pokeweed in Ulleung Island, Phytolacca insularis, were reported in this study. The P. insularis plastome was 156,419 bp long, with the large single copy (LSC) region of 86,106 bp, the small single copy (SSC) region of 18,335 bp, and two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 25,989 bp. The plastome contained 132 genes, including 84 protein-coding, eight ribosomal RNA, and 39 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content was 36.8%. Phylogenetic analysis of 13 representative plastomes within the order Caryophyllales suggests that P. insularis is closely related to the species in family Aizoaceae.

Previous studies have reported that uterine leiomyoma (UL) may share pathogenic features with obesity and hypertension, which are components of metabolic syndrome (MetS). We examined the association between UL and MetS in premenopausal parous women. This 1:1 case–control study was conducted on 615 asymptomatic women with UL and 615 women without UL that were matched for age, reproductive history, and hormonal use, who underwent a comprehensive health examination. UL was diagnosed by a gynecologist based on transvaginal ultrasonography findings. Blood pressure (BP), body composition, fasting plasma glucose, lipid profiles, insulin, and HOMA-IR were checked. Median age of the 1230 study subjects was 44 (40–47) years and 7% had MetS. Women with UL had significantly higher waist circumferences and body fat, BP, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) than women without UL. Although nonsignificant, the prevalence of MetS was higher in the UL group than in the non-UL group (9.3% vs 5.7%). In addition, the prevalence of UL increased as the number of abnormal metabolic components increased and was higher than in women without UL. Conditional logistic regression analysis, after adjustment for confounding factors, showed that hyperglycemia was significantly associated with an increased risk of UL (odds ratio = 1.45; 95% confidence interval, 1.10–1.89). Prevalence of abnormal metabolic component was higher in premenopausal women with UL than in normal controls, regardless of age or reproductive history. Furthermore, the study suggests that UL may share pathogenic features with the components of MetS and that women with UL be considered eligible for the early screening of metabolic abnormalities.

We determined the complete chloroplast genome sequence of two individuals of Pelatantheria scolopendrifolia, an endangered orchid species in Korea. The total chloroplast genome size of Mokpo (MG752972) and Naju (MG752973) population was 146,971 bp and 146,848 bp, respectively. The chloroplast genome contained 106 genes, including 72 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. Variation in gene contents and structures was not found between two individuals. We found truncated or deleted ndh genes in P. scolopendrifolia. Phylogenetic analysis, based on the whole chloroplast genome sequences of 25 species of Orchidaceae, showed that P. scolopendrifolia was most closely related to Gastrochilus fuscopunctatus.

Rubus boninensis is a rare endemic species found on the Bonin Islands with a very restricted distribution. It is morphologically most closely related to Rubus trifidus, occurring widely in the southern Korean peninsula and Japan. This species pair provides a good example of anagenetic speciation on an oceanic island in the northwestern Pacific Ocean&mdash, R. trifidus as a continental progenitor and R. boninensis as an insular derivative species. In this study, we firstly characterized the complete plastome of R. boninensis and R. trifidus and compared this species pair to another anagenetically derived species pair (R. takesimensis&ndash, R. crataegifolius). The complete plastome of R. trifidus was 155,823 base pairs (bp) long, slightly longer (16 bp) than that of R. boninensis (155,807 bp). No structural or content rearrangements were found between the species pair. Eleven hotspot regions, including trnH/psbA, were identified between R. trifidus and R. boninensis. Phylogenetic analysis of 19 representative plastomes within the family Rosaceae suggested sister relationships between R. trifidus and R. boninensis, and between R. crataegifolius and R. takesimensis. The plastome resources generated by the present study will help elucidate plastome evolution and resolve phylogenetic relationships within highly complex and reticulated lineages of the genus Rubus.

Ulleung Island is an oceanic volcanic island in Korea, which has never been connected to the adjacent continent. Previous studies highlighted Ulleung Island as an excellent system to study the pattern and process of early stages of flowering plant evolutions on oceanic island. The predominant mode of speciation in flowering plants on Ulleung Island appears to be anagenesis. However, the potentially important role of hybrid speciation among incompletely reproductively isolated lineages cannot be ruled out. Viola woosanensis (Violaceae) is of purportedly hybrid origin between V. ulleungdoensis (i.e., formerly recognized as V. selkirkii in Ulleung Island) and V. chaerophylloides, based on morphology. To examine the origin of V. woosanensis, we sampled a total of 80 accessions, including V. woosanensis and its putative parental species and sequenced nrDNA ITS, and four highly variable chloroplast noncoding regions (trnL-trnF, rpl16 intron, atpF-atpH, and psbA-trnH). Representative species of Viola from Korea were also included in the phylogenetic analyses (maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference). Additive polymorphic sites in the nrDNA ITS regions were confirmed by cloning amplicons from representative species. The molecular data strongly supported the hybrid origin of V. woosanensis, and the maternal and paternal parent were determined to be V. ulleungdoensis and V. chaerophylloides, respectively. The presence of two parental ribotypes in V. woosanensis (with the exception in one population) was confirmed by cloning, suggesting V. woosanensis is primarily the F1 generation. No trace of backcrossing and introgression with its parents was detected due to low fertility of hybrid species. We found a multiple and unidirectional hybrid origin of V. woosanensis. Additional studies are required to determine which factors contribute to asymmetric gene flow of Viola species in Ulleung Island.
