Antiferromagnetic insulators are a ubiquitous class of magnetic materials, holding the promise of low-dissipation spin-based computing devices that can display ultra-fast switching and are robust against stray fields. However, their imperviousness to magnetic fields also makes them difficult to control in a reversible and scalable manner. Here we demonstrate a novel proof-of-principle ionic approach to control the spin reorientation (Morin) transition reversibly in the common antiferromagnetic insulator α-Fe2O3 (haematite) – now an emerging spintronic material that hosts topological antiferromagnetic spin-textures and long magnon-diffusion lengths. We use a low-temperature catalytic-spillover process involving the post-growth incorporation or removal of hydrogen from α-Fe2O3 thin films. Hydrogenation drives pronounced changes in its magnetic anisotropy, Néel vector orientation and canted magnetism via electron injection and local distortions. We explain these effects with a detailed magnetic anisotropy model and first-principles calculations. Tailoring our work for future applications, we demonstrate reversible control of the room-temperature spin-state by doping/expelling hydrogen in Rh-substituted α-Fe2O3.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnets with intrinsic ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic (FM/AFM) ordering are highly desirable for future spintronics devices. However, the synthesis of 2D magnetic crystals, especially the direct growth on SiO2/Si substrate, is just in its infancy. Here, we report a chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-based rational growth approach for the synthesis of ultrathin FeTe crystals with controlled structural and magnetic phases. By precisely optimizing the growth temperature (Tgrowth), FeTe nanoplates with either layered tetragonal or non-layered hexagonal phase can be controlled with high-quality. The two controllable phases lead to square and triangular morphologies with a thickness down to 3.6 and 2.8 nm, respectively. More importantly, transport measurements reveal that tetragonal FeTe is antiferromagnetic with a Neel temperature (TN) about 71.8 K, while hexagonal FeTe is ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature (TC) around 220 K. Theoretical calculations indicate that the ferromagnetic order in hexagonal FeTe is originated from a concomitant lattice distortion and the spin-lattice coupling. Integrating multiple properties in a single system is crucial for the continuous developments in electronic devices. However, some physical properties are mutually exclusive in nature. Here, we report the coexistence of two seemingly mutually exclusive properties-polarity and two-dimensional conductivity-in ferroelectric Ba$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$TiO$_3$ thin films at the LaAlO$_3$/Ba$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$TiO$_3$ interface at room temperature. The polarity of a ~3.2 nm Ba$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$TiO$_3$ thin film is preserved with a two-dimensional mobile carrier density of ~0.05 electron per unit cell. We show that the electronic reconstruction resulting from the competition between the built-in electric field of LaAlO$_3$ and the polarization of Ba$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$TiO$_3$ is responsible for this unusual two-dimensional conducting polar phase. FeTe1-xSe x, a promising layered material used to realize Majorana zero modes, has attracted enormous attention in recent years. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) are the routine growth methods used to prepare FeTe1-xSexthin films. However, both methods require high-vacuum conditions and polished crystalline substrates, which hinder the exploration of the topological superconductivity and related nanodevices of this material. Here we demonstrate the growth of the ultrathin FeTe1-xSex superconductor by a facile, atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The composition and thickness of the two-dimensional (2D) FeTe1-xSex nanosheets are well controlled by tuning the experimental conditions. The as-prepared FeTe0.8Se0.2 nanosheet exhibits an onset superconducting transition temperature of 12.4 K, proving its high quality. Our work offers an effective strategy for preparing the ultrathin FeTe1-xSex superconductor, which could become a promising platform for further study of the unconventional superconductivity in the FeTe1-xSex system. Several challenges in designing an operational Skyrmion racetrack memory are well-known. Among those challenges, a few contradictions can be identified if researchers were to rely only on metallic materials. Hence, expanding the exploration on Skyrmion Physics into oxide materials is essential to bridge the contradicting gap. In this topical review, we first briefly revise the theories and criteria involved in stabilizing and manipulating Skymions, followed by studying the behaviors of dipolar-stabilized magnetic bubbles. Next, we explore the properties of multiferroic Skyrmions with magnetoelectric coupling, which can only be stabilized in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ thus far, as well as the rare bulk N\'eel-type Skyrmions in some polar materials. As an interlude section, we review the theory of Anomalous (AHE) and Topological Hall Effect (THE), before going through the recent progress of THE in oxide thin films. The debate about an alternative interpretation is also discussed. Exploring exotic interface magnetism due to charge transfer and strong spin-orbit coupling has profound application in the future development of spintronic memory. Here, the emergence and tuning of topological Hall effect (THE) from a CaMnO3 /CaIrO3 /CaMnO3 trilayer structure are studied in detail, which suggests the presence of magnetic Skyrmion-like bubbles. First, by tilting the magnetic field direction, the evolution of the Hall signal suggests a transformation of Skyrmions into topologically-trivial stripe domains, consistent with behaviors predicted by micromagnetic simulations. Second, by varying the thickness of CaMnO3 , the optimal thicknesses for the THE signal emergence are found, which allow identification of the source of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and its competition with antiferromagnetic superexchange. Employing high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, randomly distributed stacking faults are identified only at the bottom interface and may avoid mutual cancellation of DMI. Last, a spin-transfer torque experiment also reveals a low threshold current density of ≈109 A m-2 for initiating the bubbles' motion. This discovery sheds light on a possible strategy for integrating Skyrmions with antiferromagnetic spintronics.

In the quest for post-CMOS technologies, ferromagnetic skyrmions and their anti-particles have shown great promise as topologically protected solitonic information carriers in memory-in-logic or neuromorphic devices. However, the presence of dipolar fields in ferromagnets, restricting the formation of ultra-small topological textures, and the deleterious skyrmion Hall effect when driven by spin torques have thus far inhibited their practical implementations. Antiferromagnetic analogues, which are predicted to demonstrate relativistic dynamics, fast deflection-free motion and size scaling have recently come into intense focus, but their experimental realizations in natural antiferromagnetic systems are yet to emerge. Here, we demonstrate a family of topological antiferromagnetic spin-textures in $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ - an earth-abundant oxide insulator - capped with a Pt over-layer. By exploiting a first-order analogue of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, we stabilize exotic merons-antimerons (half-skyrmions), and bimerons, which can be erased by magnetic fields and re-generated by temperature cycling. These structures have characteristic sizes of the order ~100 nm that can be chemically controlled via precise tuning of the exchange and anisotropy, with pathways to further scaling. Driven by current-based spin torques from the heavy-metal over-layer, some of these AFM textures could emerge as prime candidates for low-energy antiferromagnetic spintronics at room temperature., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Disorder-induced magnetoresistance (MR) effect is quadratic at low perpendicular magnetic fields and linear at high fields. This effect is technologically appealing, especially in the two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, since it offers potential applications in magnetic sensors with nanoscale spatial resolution. However, it is a great challenge to realize a graphene magnetic sensor based on this effect because of the difficulty in controlling the spatial distribution of disorder and enhancing the MR sensitivity in the single-layer regime. Here, we report a room-temperature colossal MR of up to 5,000% at 9 T in terraced single-layer graphene. By laminating single-layer graphene on a terraced substrate, such as TiO2 terminated SrTiO3, we demonstrate a universal one order of magnitude enhancement in the MR compared to conventional single-layer graphene devices. Strikingly, a colossal MR of >1,000% was also achieved in the terraced graphene even at a high carrier density of ~1012 cm-2. Systematic studies of the MR of single-layer graphene on various oxide- and non-oxide-based terraced surfaces demonstrate that the terraced structure is the dominant factor driving the MR enhancement. Using interlayer interaction to control functional heterostructures with atomic-scale designs has become one of the most effective interface-engineering strategies nowadays. Here, we demonstrate the effect of a crystalline LaFeO3 buffer layer on amorphous and crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures. The LaFeO3 buffer layer acts as an energetically favored electron acceptor in both LaAlO3/SrTiO3 systems, resulting in modulation of interfacial carrier density and hence metal-to-insulator transition. For amorphous and crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures, the metal-to-insulator transition is found when the LaFeO3 layer thickness crosses 3 and 6 unit cells, respectively. Such different critical LaFeO3 thicknesses are explained in terms of distinct characteristic lengths of the redox-reaction-mediated and polar-catastrophe-dominated charge transfer, controlled by the interfacial atomic contact and Thomas-Fermi screening effect, respectively. Electrical control of material properties based on ionic liquids (IL) has seen great development and emerging applications in the field of functional oxides, mainly understood by the electrostatic and electrochemical gating mechanisms. Compared to the fast, flexible, and reproducible electrostatic gating, electrochemical gating is less controllable owing to the complex behaviors of ion migration. Here, the interface‐dependent oxygen migration by electrochemical gating is resolved at the atomic scale in the LaAlO3–SrTiO3 system through ex situ IL gating experiments and on‐site atomic‐resolution characterization. The difference between interface structures leads to the controllable electrochemical oxygen migration by filling oxygen vacancies. The findings not only provide an atomic‐scale insight into the origin of interface‐dependent electrochemical gating but also demonstrate an effective way of engineering interface structure to control the electrochemical gating., The interface‐dependent oxygen migration by electrochemical gating is resolved at the atomic scale in the LaAlO3–SrTiO3 system through ex situ ionic liquid gating experiments and on‐site atomic‐resolution characterization. Tailoring spin-orbit interactions and Coulomb repulsion are the key features to observe exotic physical phenomena such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture at oxide interfaces. Our study proposes a novel platform for engineering the magnetism and spin-orbit coupling at LaMnO3/SrIrO3 (3d-5d oxide) interfaces by tuning the LaMnO3 growth conditions which controls the lattice displacement and spin-correlated interfacial coupling through charge transfer. We report on a tunable and enhanced interface-induced Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Elliot-Yafet spin relaxation mechanism in LaMnO3/SrIrO3 bilayer with change in the underlying magnetic order of LaMnO3. We also observed enhanced spin-orbit coupling strength in LaMnO3/SrIrO3 compared to previously reported SrIrO3 layers. The X-Ray spectroscopy measurement reveals the quantitative valence of Mn and their impact on charge transfer. Further, we performed angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements, which show signatures of magnetic proximity effect in SrIrO3 while reflecting the magnetic order of LaMnO3. The erasable and recreatable 2D electron gas at SrTiO3-based heterointerface paves the way towards future novel electronics., While benefiting greatly from electronics, our society also faces a major problem of electronic waste, which has already caused environmental pollution and adverse human health effects. Therefore, recyclability becomes a must-have feature in future electronics. Here, we demonstrate an erasable and recreatable two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), which can be easily created and patterned by depositing a water-dissolvable overlayer of amorphous Sr3Al2O6 (a-SAO) on SrTiO3 (STO) at room temperature. The 2DEG can be repeatedly erased or recreated by depositing the a-SAO or dissolving in water, respectively. Photoluminescence results show that the 2DEG arises from the a-SAO–induced oxygen vacancy. Furthermore, by gradually depleting the 2DEG, a transition of nonlinear to linear Hall effect is observed, demonstrating an unexpected interfacial band structure. The convenience and repeatability in the creation of the water-dissolvable 2DEG with rich physics could potentially contribute to the exploration of next generation electronics, such as environment-friendly or water-soluble electronics.

Recent studies have highlighted the collective rotations of corner-shared oxygen octahedra in ABO3 functional perovskite oxides. However, experimental methods that allow direct measurements of oxygen octahedra, especially for the multilayer containing different types of oxygen octahedral rotations in each layer, are still rare. In this report, the correlation between oxygen octahedral rotation and cation-lattice symmetry is discussed by studying the interface-engineered perovskite La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layers. The out-of-phase octahedral rotations remove the orthogonality between corresponding axes of the cation lattice, leading to the asymmetric diffraction pattern recorded by the reciprocal space mapping. More importantly, in the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3-multilayer heterostructure, the reciprocal space mapping can identify different octahedral rotations for each La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layer, explaining the appearance of multiple Curie temperatures and coercive fields. Our results reveal the new understanding of the old reciprocal space mapping-based technique, based on the correlation between oxygen octahedral rotation and cation-lattice symmetry. The application of reciprocal space mapping to the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3-multilayers not only showcases the advantage of this technique but also extends our understanding of oxygen octahedral rotation to the more complicated oxide heterostructures.

Electrolyte gating is a powerful means for tuning the carrier density and exploring the resultant modulation of novel properties on solid surfaces. However, the mechanism, especially its effect on the oxygen migration and electrostatic charging at the oxide heterostructures, is still unclear. Here we explore the electrolyte gating on oxygen-deficient interfaces between SrTiO3 (STO) crystals and LaAlO3 (LAO) overlayer through the measurements of electrical transport, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. We found that oxygen vacancies (Ovac) were filled selectively and irreversibly after gating due to oxygen electromigration at the amorphous LAO/STO interface, resulting in a reconstruction of its interfacial band structure. Because of the filling of Ovac, the amorphous interface also showed an enhanced electron mobility and quantum oscillation of the conductance. Further, the filling effect could be controlled by the degree of the crystallinity of the LAO overlayer by varying the growth temperatures. In this study we report the existence of novel ultraviolet (UV) and blue emission in rare-earth based perovskite NdGaO3 (NGO) and the systematic quench of the NGO photoluminescence (PL) by Ce doping. Study of room temperature PL was performed in both single-crystal and polycrystalline NGO (substrates and pellets) respectively. Several NGO pellets were prepared with varying Ce concentration and their room temperature PL was studied using 325 nm laser. It was found that the PL intensity shows a systematic quench with increasing Ce concentration. XPS measurements indicated that nearly 50% of Ce atoms are in the 4+ state. The PL quench was attributed to the novel concept of super hydrogenic dopant (SHD)”, where each Ce4+ ion contributes an electron which forms a super hydrogenic atom with an enhanced Bohr radius, due to the large dielectric constant of the host. Based on the critical Ce concentration for complete quenching this SHD radius was estimated to be within a range of 0.85 nm and 1.15 nm whereas the predicted theoretical value of SHD radius for NdGaO3 is ~1.01 nm.
