Flying insects are remarkably agile and robust. As they fly through cluttered natural environments, they can demonstrate aggressive acrobatic maneuvers such as backflip, rapid escape, and in-flight collision recovery. Current state-of-the-art subgram microaerial-vehicles (MAVs) are predominately powered by rigid actuators such as piezoelectric ceramics, but they have low fracture strength (120 MPa) and failure strain (0.3%). Although these existing systems can achieve a high lift-to-weight ratio, they have not demonstrated insect-like maneuvers such as somersault or rapid collision recovery. In this article, we present a 665 mg aerial robot that is powered by novel dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA). The new DEA achieves high power density (1.2 kW/kg) and relatively high transduction efficiency (37%). We further incorporate this soft actuator into an aerial robot to demonstrate novel flight capabilities. This insect-scale aerial robot has a large lift-to-weight ratio (>2.2:1) and it achieves an ascending speed of 70 cm/s. In addition to demonstrating controlled hovering flight, it can recover from an in-flight collision and perform a somersault within 0.16 s. This work demonstrates that soft aerial robots can achieve insect-like flight capabilities absent in rigid-powered MAVs, thus showing the potential of a new class of hybrid soft-rigid robots.

Cellulose paper, a material that is naturally derived, low cost, lightweight, eco-friendly, and mechanically deformable, plays important roles in producing next-generation flexible electronics. Following the booms in the development of functional electronics, the soft actuators built from cellulose paper have attracted great attention. In this focused review, the milestones and recent achievements of cellulose paper-based actuators are summarized. Electro-, thermal, moisture and magnetic actuation mechanisms are utilized to acquire energy from external stimuli. Corresponding functional materials and available fabrication techniques like film assembly and layer deposition are described. Programmable actions for the emerging applications in bionics, paper grippers and robots are realized by pursuing different strategies to control the responding deformation. Along with a conclusion, the existing challenges and possible solutions in evaluating and improving the performance of cellulose paper are summarized in the final section.

Traditional actuators, such as motors as well as hydraulic or pneumatic artificial muscles, demonstrate excessive noise, a heavy weight, and a large size, which limit their practical application in many areas. This study proposes a novel twisted and coiled polymer fiber (TCPF) actuator fabricated from a polymer-coated optical fiber. The TCPF actuator is a soft actuator that is driven by heating; the TCPF actuator in combination with a cooling system has been widely studied for applications in robotics. Sensing is a major issue in such units; in particular, temperature sensing is important for the safe usage of the TCPF. To achieve this, the electrical properties of the heating wire are typically utilized. However, this method is affected by the input voltage noise because the circuit used for actuation is the same as that used for sensing. To separate these circuits, this study developed a temperature-sensing method for the TCPF based on an optical fiber. For propagating only the heat of the polymer to the optical fiber, we embedded the optical fiber in the TCPF. This study experimentally demonstrated that the TCPF actuator fabricated using the polymer-coated optical fiber can be driven by heating. Furthermore, using the developed sensing method, we achieved temperature and force control under isometric conditions.

Soft robots often show a superior power-to-weight ratio using highly compliant, light-weight material, which leverages various bio-inspired body designs to generate desirable deformations for life-like motions. In this letter, given that most material used for soft robots is light-weight in general, we propose a volumetrically enhanced design strategy for soft robots, providing a novel design guideline to govern the form factor of soft robots. We present the design, modeling, and optimization of a volumetrically enhanced soft actuator (VESA) with linear and rotary motions, respectively, achieving superior force and torque output, linear and rotary displacement, and overall extension ratio per unit volume. We further explored VESA's proprioceptive sensing capability by validating the output force and torque through analytical modeling and experimental verification. Our results show that the volumetric metrics hold the potential to be used as a practical design guideline to optimize soft robots’ engineering performance

Implantable drug depots have the capacity to locally meet therapeutic requirements by maximizing local drug efficacy and minimizing potential systemic side effects. Tubular organs including the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract and vasculature all manifest with endoluminal disease. The anatomic distribution of localized drug delivery for these organs using existing therapeutic modalities is limited. Application of local depots in a circumferential and extended longitudinal fashion could transform our capacity to offer effective treatment across a range of conditions. Here we report the development and application of a kirigami-based stent platform to achieve this. The stents comprise a stretchable snake-skin-inspired kirigami shell integrated with a fluidically driven linear soft actuator. They have the capacity to deposit drug depots circumferentially and longitudinally in the tubular mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract across millimetre to multi-centimetre length scales, as well as in the vasculature and large airways. We characterize the mechanics of kirigami stents for injection, and their capacity to engage tissue in a controlled manner and deposit degradable microparticles loaded with therapeutics by evaluating these systems ex vivo and in vivo in swine. We anticipate such systems could be applied for a range of endoluminal diseases by simplifying dosing regimens while maximizing drug on-target effects through the sustained release of therapeutics and minimizing systemic side effects. A kirigami-inspired stent-based system has been developed for extended local drug delivery to the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts as well as the vascular system.

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have been shown to produce electrically induced strains beyond 500%. The ability to undergo large deformation allows the DEA to store large amounts of elastic energy by electrical actuation; it also allows the DEA to perform flexibly in a diverse range of motions. Existing studies used different methods to maximize actuation strain for soft robotic applications. In this article, we examine the actuation of our antagonistically coupled DEAs, reminiscent to that of human muscles. We perform an analysis to reveal optimal conditions that maximize its actuation stroke, actuation force, and output energy. We quantify actuation stroke by the displacement sweep due to electrical actuation, between two fixed points, expressed as a percentage, and refer to this as "actuation sweep." From the analysis, we predicted an optimal prestretch for the DEA that corresponds to a 59% actuation sweep. In our experiment, we realized a 55% actuation sweep. We further characterized the output force and the mechanical work done for complete performance appraisal of the antagonistic system both theoretically and experimentally. We realized an antagonistic soft actuator system with simple geometry that provides significant electrically induced displacement, force, and work done, similar to that of biological muscle systems, and demonstrated its efficacy.

In this letter, we present an electro-driven cylindrical actuator system composed of a bilayered liquid crystal elastomer/carbon black (LCE/CB) electro-driven soft actuator and a conductive track. The bilayered LCE/CB electro-driven actuator consists of an inner LCE circular band and several U-shaped CB conductive regions stuck on the outer surface of the LCE ring. Benefiting from the effective Joule heating of CB powder and the consequential inhomogeneous stress generated inside the bilayered LCE/CB film, the cylindrical actuator can roll forward with a rate of 1.6 mm/s along a stationary copper conductive track powered by a 50 V direct current supply. The dynamic connection between the rolling actuator and the conductive track effectively eliminates the limitation of electric wires in the complicated actuation set-ups of the LCE materials. This work might promote the development of electro-driven LCE actuators and have potential applications in the fields of soft robots and electric devices.

The method of converting insulating polymers into conducting 3D porous graphene structures, so-called laser-induced graphene (LIG) with a commercially available CO2 laser engraving system in an ambient atmosphere, resulted in several applications in sensing, actuation, and energy. In this paper, we demonstrate a combination of LIG and a smart hydrogel (poly(N-vinylcaprolactam)—pNVCL) for multiresponsive actuation in a humid environment. Initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) was used to deposit a thin layer of the smart hydrogel onto a matrix of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and embedded LIG tracks. An intriguing property of smart hydrogels, such as pNVCL, is that the change of an external stimulus (temperature, pH, magnetic/electric fields) induces a reversible phase transition from a swollen to a collapsed state. While the active smart hydrogel layer had a thickness of only 300 nm (compared to the 500 times thicker actuator matrix), it was possible to induce a reversible bending of over 30° in the humid environment triggered by Joule heating. The properties of each material were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, tensile testing, and ellipsometry. The actuation performances of single-responsive versions were investigated by creating a thermoresponsive PDMS/LIG actuator and a humidity-responsive PDMS/pNVCL actuator. These results were used to tune the properties of the multiresponsive PDMS/LIG/pNVCL actuator. Furthermore, its self-sensing capabilities were investigated. By getting a feedback from the piezoresistive change of the PMDS/LIG composite, the bending angle could be tracked by measuring the change in resistance. To highlight the possibilities of the processing techniques and the combination of materials, a demonstrator in the shape of an octopus with four independently controllable arms was developed.

SUMMARYThe soft actuator is made of superelastic material and embedded flexible material. In this paper, a kind of soft tube was designed and used to assemble two kinds of pneumatic soft actuators. The experiment and finite element analysis are used to comprehensively analyze and describe the bending, elongation, and torsion deformation of the soft actuator. The results show that the two soft actuators have the best actuation performance when the inner diameter of the soft tube is 4 mm. In addition, when the twisting pitch of the torsional actuator is 24 mm, its torsional performance is optimized. Finally, a device that can be used in the production line was assembled by utilizing those soft actuators, and some operation tasks were completed. This experiment provides some insights for the development of soft actuators with more complex motions in the future.

Micro-patterned hydrogels have received increasing attention in various research fields that need a fine structure and advanced functions compared to bulk hydrogels. For enhancing their performance, control of the size and distribution of pores in hydrogels is crucial. In particular, for the application of thermoresponsive hydrogels to a soft actuator, the characteristics of pores play an important role in enhancing the response time. We formed a porous structure in micro-patterns of polydiethylacrylamide (PDEAM), a thermoresponsive hydrogel, and analyzed the effect of pore size on the response time of the patterned hydrogels. Micro-patterned thermoresponsive hydrogels are fabricated by photo-crosslinking PDEAM copolymerized with benzophenone photo-crosslinker and polystyrene (PS) as a porogen. Pores sufficiently smaller than patterned objects, between a few micrometers to a few tens of micrometers, are successfully formed by controlling the content and molecular weight of PS. As the size and number of pores increase, the response time is improved, and the response time for swelling and deswelling is improved by up to 52 and 43% by blending PDEAM with 50 vol% of low molecular weight PS (5 kg/mol). This simple way to form a sub-millimeter scale hydrogel structure with controlled pores can be utilized in the emerging research fields, including 3D cell scaffolds, targeted drug delivery, and soft robotics.

The sea cucumber evolved to bear mutable collagenous tissue (MCT) that enables its elastic modulus to change by a factor of 10 within a few seconds. It does this by controlling the amount of chemical regulator released, which can subsequently form or break hydrogen bonds within the MCT. Although existing water-driven, self-operating, soft actuators have great potential for soft robotics, they remain fragile and slow; ergo, their range of application remains modest. Inspired by MCT, we introduce a programmable, powerful, and ultra-fast water-driven self-operating soft actuator exerting an actuation force of approximately 2 N with an actuation speed of approximately 3 s−1 in 80 °C water based on the dramatic stiffness alteration of bulk poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel. This actuator also exhibits outstanding robustness by preserving its original shape over multiple cycles of highly strained (300%) actuations under harsh environments. A simple modulation of cross-linker concentration with its dimensional adjustment enabled the precise tuning of not only the actuation force but also the actuation speed in a wide range. Thus, the soft robotic gripper was able to perform a myriad of intricate tasks such as capturing a fragile object, acting as a biomedical appliance, and closing a large wound with uniform appropriate forces.

Water-triggered materials are receiving increasing attentions due to their diverse capabilities such as easy operation, soft actuation, low cost, environmental friendliness, and many more other advantages. However, most of such materials generally have a long reaction time and require strict preservation conditions, which limit their adaptability in practice. In this study, a novel water-triggered material based on Al-NaOH-composited eutectic gallium–indium (eGaIn) alloys was proposed and demonstrated, which is rather fast-responsive and deformable. Once water is applied, the material thus fabricated would achieve a temperature rise of 40 °C in just several seconds along with gas production, indicating its big potential to be used as a thermal and pneumatic actuator. Further, the new material’s reusability and degradation ability were also tested. Following that, a double-layer-structure smart bandage was designed, whose bulk was filled with Al-NaOH-composited eGaIn while BiInSn served as outer supporting material. According to the experiments, a sheet structure with a thickness of 2 mm would support a weight of 1.8 kg after it was subjected to a cooling process, which is much better than the weight-bearing capability of fiberglass. In addition, a prototype of a water-triggered sphere robot was also fabricated using Al-NaOH-eGaIn, which realized rolling and bouncing behaviors under specific external stimulation. These findings indicate the potential value of the present material in developing future wearable devices, soft actuators, and soft robotics.

A prototype of a soft actuator for extreme environments was fabricated, and driven in a cryogenic temperature environment. Previous soft actuators cannot be used for robots in extreme environments because resin, the main fabrication material, exhibits weak environmental characteristics. Therefore, this study proposes the application of polyimide (PI) films to soft actuators. PI is characterized by excellent environmental resistance. However, the welding of PI is difficult because of its high resistance. In this study, a welding method was developed for PI films. This method does not require pretreatment, or the use of adhesives or additives to reduce resistance. Hence, an actuator that utilizes all the characteristics of PI was realized. The actuator was characterized in a cryogenic environment, which is one of the extreme environments, and was successfully driven at a liquid nitrogen temperature of 78 K. This proposed technology is not limited to cryogenic environments and is expected to provide extreme environmental resistance to existing soft robots.

It is known that introducing a pediatric externally powered prosthetic hand from an early age has certain merits such as the recovery of body image. However, this process is not popular in Japan. The high cost and technological problems of the hand have resulted in difficulty in its popularization. The pediatric prosthetic hand must be lighter and smaller than the adult one. Furthermore, parents of users prefer a prosthetic hand, such as a human arm and hand. We developed a prosthetic hand that demonstrates certain functionalities and appearances similar to a real human hand. The prosthetic hand consists of miniature McKibben actuators and is manufactured from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin and covered by a silicon glove. It has flexible joint structures and can grasp objects of various shapes. In this paper, we present a prototype of the pediatric prosthetic hand and the results of gripping experiments, bending and extension of finger experiments, and user tests.

This article presents a frog-inspired swimming soft robot whose joints are articulated pneumatic soft actuators. The soft actuator is designed and prepared by studying the biological structure and limb movement characteristics of frogs. A schematic limb motion diagram of the robot is established based on the kinematic model, and the design scheme is determined by a combined control system. The torso size is 0.175 × 0.100 × 0.060 m, which realizes frog-inspired swimming robot miniaturization. The experimental results show that the average propulsion speed during linear motion is 0.075 m/s, and the average turning speed is 15°/s. The rationality of the robot structural design and correctness of the control system are verified by prototype experiments.

An underwater manipulator is essential for underwater robotic sampling and other service operations. Conventional rigid body underwater manipulators generally required substantial size and weight, leading to hindered general applications. Pioneering soft robotic underwater manipulators have defied this by offering dexterous and lightweight arms and grippers, but still requiring substantial actuation and control components to withstand the water pressure and achieving the desired dynamic performance. In this work, we propose a novel approach to underwater manipulator design and control, exploiting the unique characteristics of soft robots, with a hybrid structure (rigid frame+soft actuator) for improved rigidity and force output, a uniform actuator design allowing one compact hydraulic actuation system to drive all actuators, and a novel fully customizable soft bladder design that improves performances in multiple areas: (1) force output of the actuator is decoupled from the working depth, enabling wide working ranges; (2) all actuators are connected to the main hydraulic line without actuator-specific control loop, resulting in a very compact actuation system especially for high-dexterity cases; (3) dynamic responses were improved significantly compared with the counter system without bladder. A prototype soft manipulator with 4-DOFs, dual bladders, and 15 N payload was developed; the entire system (including actuation, control, and batteries) could be mounted onto a consumer-grade remotely operated vehicle, with depth-independent performances validated by various laboratory and field test results across various climatic and hydrographic conditions. Analytical models and validations of the proposed soft bladder design were also presented as a guideline for other applications.

Soft contraction actuators are becoming important elements particularly for human-friendly robotic applications. However, it is challenging to achieve both a large operating distance while generating practical force. Hence, we present a new soft contraction actuator capable of realizing a high ratio contraction by pneumatic power. It can be easily fabricated using soft materials, including rubber tubes, one-way extensible cloth, and inextensible wire. Its initial shape is tubular but it can curve and coil to a helix shape owing to its different extensibilities on two sides when pressurized. A maximum contraction ratio of 78% and a 23 N contraction force can be achieved with an 11.6 mm initial outer diameter tube under 0.3 MPa. The effect of the tilt angle of a one-way extensible cloth on the helical shape is investigated, and a mathematical model illustrating the relationship between the contraction ratio and force is derived. Our experimental results suggest that this helical actuator has a much higher contraction ratio than a McKibben actuator under the same conditions. Finally, we discuss the potential application of the proposed actuator to a wearable device, i.e., for assisting the dorsiflexion of an ankle joint requiring a wide range of motion.

Pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) are an extensively investigated type of soft actuator. However, the PAM motions have been limited somewhat to uniaxial contraction and extension, restraining the development of PAMs. Given the current strong interest in soft robotics, PAMs have been gaining renewed attention due to their excellent compliance and ease of fabrication. Herein, under the inspiration of the elephant trunk, a family of bending and helical extensile PAMs (HE-PAMs)/helical contractile PAMs (HC-PAMs) was proposed and analyzed. Through both experiment and analysis, a model of generalized bending behavior of PAMs was built and developed to investigate the properties of axial, bending, and helical PAMs in the same theoretical framework. The topological equivalence and bifurcation were found in the analysis and utilized to explain the behaviors of these different PAMs. Meanwhile, a coupled constant curvature and torsion kinematics model was proposed to depict the motion of PAMs more accurately and conveniently. Moreover, a soft tandem manipulator consisting of bending and helical PAMs was proposed to demonstrate their attractive potential.

Shape reconfiguration is ubiquitous in nature and widely used in many applications such as soft robotics, metamaterials, energy absorption and tissue engineering. Shape reconfigurable soft actuators, due to their ability to adapt and adjust in complex and unpredictable working environment, have been designed by the use of various delicate structures and active materials. However, soft actuators that exhibit reconfigurable helical deformation have not been proposed; they have the advantage of integrating both bending and twisting actuations in one deformation mode. In this work, we present a thermal-induced shape reconfigurable soft actuator that shows reversible actuations with vastly shape differences under thermal stimulus. It exhibits helical deformation at lower temperature and mainly in-plane bending at relatively higher temperature. The reversible shape transition is controlled by a thermal stimulus that changes the anisotropy of the structure, which consists of shape memory polymer fibers embedded in a homogeneous elastic matrix. A theoretical model is proposed based on the minimum potential energy that incorporates the thermomechanical behavior of the shape memory polymer fibers. Experiments are conducted and the results agree well with the theoretical modeling. Using the theoretical model, we establish design principles for reconfigurable soft actuators whose functional response is programmable given the architecture and external stimulus. A six-handed helical soft actuator, constructed to demonstrate its programmable deformation, is utilized to catch a living fish in water.

The flexible soft actuators of conducting polymers can directly convert electrical stimulus into mechanical motions, which can be used for robotics and biomimetic applications. Herein, an electro-responsive membrane actuator based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate), functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube was fabricated using solution casting method with poly(vinyl alcohol) as a base intermediate polymer membrane. The poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) was evenly ornamented onto the single-walled carbon nanotube/poly(vinyl alcohol) membrane (single-walled carbon nanotube/ poly(vinyl alcohol)/ poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate)) surfaces through dip coating and verified by scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The desirable bending response of the fabricated single-walled carbon nanotube/ poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) membrane with time at different voltages and generated tip force makes it a promising material as a new-generation conductive polymer-based soft actuator. A permutation of the electrical conductivity, more surface area, and admirable electromechanical properties of the single-walled carbon nanotube/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) components consequences in the composite electrode exhibited excellent actuation performance compared to the ionic polymer-metal composite actuators with Pt electrodes surface. The fabricated actuator membrane can be employed for artificial muscles, robotics, and other bio-mimetic applications.

Fabric muscle is important for wearable robots that are soft, compliant, and silent with high contractility and high force. This study presents a novel shape memory alloy (SMA) spring-based fabric muscle (SFM). The SFM is manufactured by bundling SMA springs with proven performance as artificial muscle. The SFM generates high contractility and high force, and is soft, flexible, and light because it is covered with fabric used to make actual clothes. The SFM is contracted by heat and shows a contraction strain of 50% at a heating temperature of 70°C while generating 100 N force or higher. Furthermore, it generates a maximum contraction strain of 67% under no load. To drive it with the optimum voltage and current, the SFM is designed by optimizing the serial and parallel connection methods for the embedded SMA springs. We propose herein design and manufacturing methods for the SFM and verify the usability of the SFM as a soft actuator through a performance evaluation. The SFM as a soft actuator with a simple structure-like fabric is easily applicable to soft wearable robots that can support muscle power by simply being attached to usual suits. The SFM has a soft touch, and is lightweight; hence, it has the potential for wide applications to new-concept soft wearable robots that can be comfortably worn anytime and anywhere like usual clothes.

Soft actuators and robotics have been widely researched in recent years mainly due to their compliance to environments and safe interaction with humans. However, the need of tether and low energy efficiency of such actuators/robots has limited their practical applications. This article presents a novel tendon-driven soft actuator concept that has the property of self-pumping, called soft self-pumping actuator (SSPA) in this research. A SSPA is designed by assembling two soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs) face-to-face, whose air chambers are connected by two check valves. Actuation of the SSPA is achieved by tendons that allows precise and untethered control compared with traditional SPAs. The two chambers in the proposed actuators are precharged with air to a desired pressure to enlarge self-stiffness and to facilitate bending. When actuated, one chamber will be compressed and serve as a pump to inject its air into the other chamber, resulting in further bending of the actuator. The airflow involves energy transmission to help the intended actuation, thus improving energy efficiency. In experimental studies, differential chamber air pressure is found to reduce the force in initiating actuator bending. Experimental results have also shown that energy efficiency increase of up to 45% has been achieved compared with the same design but without air transmission. We believe that the proposed concept could lead to more novel designs of controllable and energy saving soft robots.

The expensive nature of currently used materials in the soft robotic industry demands the consideration of alternative materials for fabrication. This work investigates the performance of RTV-2 grade silicone rubber for fabrication of a soft actuator. Initially, a cylindrical actuator is fabricated using this material and its performance is experimentally assessed for different pressures. Further, parametric variations of the effect of wall thickness and inflation pressure are studied by numerical methods. Results show that, both wall thickness and inflation pressure are influential parameters which affect the elongation behaviour of the actuator. Thin (1.5 mm) sectioned actuators produced 76.97% more elongation compared to thick sectioned, but the stress induced is 89.61 % higher. Whereas, the thick sectioned actuator (6 mm) showed a higher load transmitting capability. With change in wall thickness from 1.5 mm to 6 mm, the elongation is reduced by 76.97 %, 38.35 %, 21.05 % and 11.43 % at pressure 100 kPa, 75 kPa, 50 kPa and 25 kPa respectively. The induced stress is also found reduced by 89.61 %, 86.66 %, 84.46 % and 68.68 % at these pressures. The average load carrying capacity of the actuator is found to be directly proportional to its wall thickness and inflation pressure.

This paper presents a frog-inspired swimming robot based on articulated pneumatic soft actuator. To realize the miniaturization of the robot and enhance its environmental adaptability, combined with the advantages and characteristics of soft materials, an articulated pneumatic soft actuator is designed based on analysis of a frog’s propulsion characteristics. A structural model is established to analyse the mechanical properties of the soft actuator. With the goal of making full use of the driving torque of the actuator and enhancing the propulsion efficiency of the robot, the motion trajectories of each joint of the robot are planned. Based on the trajectory planning, the control strategy of the soft actuator is determined to realize the frog-like swimming of the robot. The torso size after assembly is 0.175 m × 0.100 m × 0.060 m, which realizes the miniaturization of the frog-inspired robot. During the movement of the robot, the torso moves stably and flexibly, and can realize continuous linear and turning movements. The rationality of the structure and trajectory planning are verified by prototype experiments.

This article proposes a novel soft pneumatic actuator inspired by the segmented structure of earthworms. The actuator adopts a new structure of free bottom to eliminate the constraint of the bottom and enlarge the bending capacity of the actuator. Through simulation, it is found that the new actuator improves the bending angle by 20% and output force by 40% compared with traditional actuator. Moreover, key parameters of the actuator are analyzed to acquire their effect on bending angle and bending linearity. A guideline for the design and optimization of the actuator is proposed. To validate the simulation results, we build up a test platform to test bending angle and output force of the actuators, the results shows that errors between the simulation and the test remained in the limit of about 10%. Finally, a three-jaw soft gripper is fabricated and its grasping strategy is studied. The quantitative analysis shows its excellent adaptability and load capacity.

Current research into soft robots not only needs to improve their compliance, but also requires consideration of the real-time controllability of rigidity and flexibility. By combining the advantages of Pneu-Net structure and the driven jamming mechanism, we developed a soft actuator model for a soft robot with real-time variable stiffness. Firstly, the model of the soft actuator coupled with pneumatic structure and jamming mechanism was built. Secondly, we analyzed the pneumatically-driven structure by using the finite element method and researched the influences of pressure in cavities as well as shape and size of cavities on the performance of bending motion. On this basis, the pneumatically-driven structure was optimized. Finally, a prototype of the soft robot arm with variable stiffness was designed to carry out the experiment for verifying the variable stiffness of the soft actuator. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the soft robot can withstand a variable stiffness of between 0.025-0.138N/mm. In addition, the maximum elongation of the designed coupling mechanism can reach 25mm.

Twisted and coiled polymer (TCP) actuator has many advantages such as high contraction capability, high work density, low cost materials, and easiness of fabrication, making it promising for applications in biomedical devices, soft robotic, and energy-harvesting equipment. However, convenient and effective control of TCP actuators still remain some challenges. In this paper, we use an accurate strain-temperature and force-temperature model of TCP actuators to design a simple and efficient closed-loop PID control system. The validity of the proposed controllers is investigated through numerical simulations and experiments. The results show good control performance with minimum tracking errors which is less than 3% in our work. Such accuracy is ideal for many engineering fields and robotic designs.

Soft robots have infinite degrees of freedom (DOFs), extremely strong environmental adaptability, and better human-computer interaction. A soft grasping manipulator can grasp objects in a diversified manner, which is an important application and research direction in terms of soft robots. A pneumatic soft actuator structure was designed on the basis of in-depth analysis of the motion mechanism of a soft robot. A kinematic model for the soft actuator and a model for bending deformation of air cavities were established separately to determine the relationship between the bending angle and air pressure. A novel pneumatic soft manipulator with adjustable grasping diameter was designed by utilizing pneumatic soft actuators to realize adaptive grasping of objects with different diameters (within 200 mm). Finally, a physical manipulator was manufactured and the relationship between the bending angle of the soft grasping robot and pressure intensity was experimentally validated. Moreover, tests were conducted to assess the adaptability of the soft manipulator when grasping objects with different diameters, masses, and shapes in order to verify the effectiveness of the soft manipulator.

In this study, we focus on a soft anisotropic gel actuator hybridized with nanosheet liquid crystal. This gel actuator is highly hydrophilic and can be operated underwater. Gel actuators can contract when heated and expand back to their original size when cooled down. It is anisotropic in the contraction direction, aligned with the orientation of the nanosheet liquid crystal. However, details of this step response property against the actuator undergoing thermal change have not been clarified. In this paper, we introduce a method to measure the step response using a square test sheet with a side length of 2–10 mm and thickness of 0.1–1.0 mm. This measurement was used to measure the heating and cooling step response. The obtained result was approximated using a first-order lag system to determine a steady-state value and time constant. In addition, the characteristics of steady-state value and time constant were clarified from the viewpoint of shapes such as specific surface area and thickness.

Soft actuator materials change their shape or size in response to stimuli like electricity, heat, light, chemical or pH. These actuator materials are compliant and well suited for soft mechatronics and robots. This paper introduces the definition of soft materials and the position of soft actuator materials in comparison with conventional actuators and other solid state actuator materials. A thorough review of selected soft actuator materials is carried out, including responsive gels/hydrogels, ionic polymer metal composites, conducting polymers, carbon nanotubues/graphenes, dielectric elastomers, shape memory polymers and biopolymers. This review will give insights for applications of soft actuator materials via better understanding of the materials in terms of their preparation, performance and limitation.

While soft material actuators can undergo large deformations to execute very complex motions, what is critically lacking in soft material robotic systems is the ability to collect high-resolution shape information for sophisticated functions such as environmental mapping, collision detection, and full state feedback control. This work explores the potential of a nearly commercial fiber optic shape sensor (FOSS) and presents the first demonstrations of a monolithic, multicore FOSS integrated into the structure of a fiber-reinforced soft actuator. In this pilot study, we report an open loop sensorized soft actuator capable of submillimeter position feedback that can detect the soft actuator's shape, environmental shapes, collision locations, and material stiffness properties.

Twisted polymer fibre actuators provide high torsional rotation from stimulated volume expansion, induced either by chemical fuelling, thermal stimulation, or electrochemical charging. One key limitation of these actuators is the irreversibility of torsional stroke that limits their feasibility when considering real-life smart applications. Moreover, scaling the torsional stroke of these actuators becomes difficult when these are integrated into practically usable systems such as smart textiles, due to the external and variable opposing torque that is applied by the adjacent non-actuating fibres. Herein, a simple composite type torsional actuator made of hydrogel coated commercial textile cotton multifilament fibre is demonstrated. This novel actuator is of high moisture responsiveness, given that hydrogels are capable of providing huge volume expansion and twisting the overall system can transform the volumetric expansion to fibre untwisting based torsional actuation. Theoretical treatment of torsional actuation is also demonstrated based on the change in torsional stiffness of dry and wet fibres as well as a few externally applied torques. The agreement between experimental measurements and theoretical estimation is found reasonable, and the investigation allows the near-appropriate estimation of torsional stroke before integrating an actuator into a smart system.

Shape-changing interfaces are promising for users to change the physical properties of common objects. However, prevailing approaches of actuation devices require either professional equipment or materials that are not commonly accessible to non-professional users. In this work, we focus on the controllable soft actuators with inflatable structures because they are soft thus safe for human computer interaction. We propose a soft actuator design, called xBalloon, that is workable, inexpensive and easy-to-fabricate. It consists of daily materials including balloons and plastics and can realize bending actuation very effectively. For characterization, we fabricated xBalloon samples with different geometrical parameters and tested them regarding the bending performance and found the analytical model describing the relationship between the shape and the bending width. We then used xBalloons to animate a series of common objects and all can work satisfactorily. We further verified the user experience about the the fabrication and found that even those with no prior robotic knowledge can fabricate xBalloons with ease and confidence. This paper investigates the active dynamic and electromechanical characteristics of a new thin folded dielectric electro-active polymer actuator developed by Danfoss PolyPower. The high voltage is supplied to the actuator during dynamic testing to identified the effect of the electrical field on dynamic characteristics. The electromechanical characteristics are investigated by varying the amplitude and frequency of the voltage supplied. The experimental results, such as natural frequency, amplitude response, and loss factor are presented to show the influence of such an electrical field on the characteristic of the actuator. There is a reduction of resonance frequency from 14 Hz to 12 Hz as voltage supply up to 2000 V. The actuating response of the actuator was subjected more to frequency rather than the amplitude of the voltage supplied. Hence, the results may guide the exploration of a new folded thin actuator as an active vibration controller.

Achieving both high compliance and stiffness is a key issue in stiffness-tunable soft robots. A wide-range variable-stiffness method keeping pure soft characteristic is proposed by bioinspired design of deep-sea glass sponges adopting thermoplastic starch. The stiffness-tunable mechanism is designed through force analysis and optimization of its bionic cellular structure. It is fabricated with load-weight ratio exceeding 470. Then, a wide-range stiffness-tunable omnidirectional-bending soft actuator (WOSA) is realized, and the bending stiffness model is established. Comparative experiments of stiffness and deformation are conducted on WOSA and a pure soft actuator (PSA) with the same size. Results show that the WOSA can get 92.3 times initial bending and 70.8 times torsional stiffness variation range, of which the flexibility is even better than PSA. A gripper assembled by three WOSAs is verified through stiffness adjustment that it can grasp different weight fragile, soft items from the unshelled fresh egg, boiled egg yolk to grapes. It can even lift a dumbbell weighting 3.32 kg. Finally, a manipulator demonstrated its potential in future minimally invasive surgical applications due to its wide stiffness range and large deformation capacity.

In order to improve the bearing capacity of soft actuators, this article presents the development of the rigid-hoop-reinforced (spring or steel hoop) multi-DOF soft actuator. The actuator is composed of a rotary module with spring reinforcement on the silicone rubber-based body and a bending module with steel hoop reinforcement on the body. Compared with fiber-reinforced actuators, the bearing capacities of rigid-hoop-reinforced actuators made of 65Mn spring steel are improved. The radial and the axial bearing capacity for the bending module and the rotary module is raised by 29.6%, 28.2%, 30.6%, 49.6% respectively; under the same pressure, the spring-reinforced interval increases the maximum rotary angle of the rotary module, the steel hoop-reinforced interval increases the maximum bending angle of the bending module; with the same reinforcement type, the bending module with reinforcement interval of 10 mm has good bending characteristics that the bending angle changes with the pressure gently; the lower the hardness of silicone rubber base body, the better the adaptability and flexibility of the actuator, and the higher the hardness, the greater the bearing capacity of the actuator. Due to the above advantages, the rigid-hoop-reinforced multi-DOF soft actuator can be applied to medical devices which need high load-carrying capacity.

Porous multi-well plate inserts are widely used in biomedical research to study transport processes or culture cells/tissues at the air-liquid interface. These inserts are made of rigid materials and are used under static culture conditions, which are unrepresentative of biological microenvironments. Here, we present FleXert, a soft, actuatable cell culture insert that interfaces with six-well plates. It is made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and comprises a porous PDMS membrane as cell/tissue support. FleXerts can be pneumatically actuated using a standard syringe pump, imparting tensile strains of up to 30 %. A wide range of actuation patterns can be achieved by varying air pressure and pumping rate. Facile surface functionalization of FleXert’s porous PDMS membrane with fibronectin enables adhesion of human dermal fibroblasts, and strains developing on FleXert’s membrane are successfully transduced to the cell layer. 3D tissue models, such as fibroblast-laden collagen gels, can also be anchored to PDMS following polydopamine coating. Furthermore, collagen coated FleXert membranes support the establishment of a human skin model, demonstrating the material’s excellent biocompatibility required for tissue engineering. In contrast to existing technologies, FleXerts do not require costly fabrication equipment or custombuilt culture chambers, making them a versatile and low-cost solution for tissue engineering and biological barrier penetration studies under physiological strain. This paper is an extensive toolkit for multi-disciplinary mechanobiology studies, including detailed instructions for a wide variety of methods such as device fabrication, theoretical modelling, cell culture, and image analysis techniques.

Bioinspired movements such as elongation/shortening and bending are extensively studied in the field of soft robotics. However, radial contracting deformation has been overlooked, another typical deformation in nature, such as the constrictive deformation in the human esophagus and bladder. We present a novel soft ring-shaped actuator that generates radial contraction and examine its quasi-static performance under pressurization. This actuator consists of a soft ring-shaped body and a rigid casing. A single circular air chamber embedded concentrically inside the actuator is created through the lost-wax method. A theoretical model of the quasi-static state of the actuator's contracting deformation was formulated in light of the minimum total potential energy principle. Meanwhile, a finite-element method (FEM) model was constructed to stimulate the radial contraction of the actuator. In addition, experiments were conducted to identify the maximum input pressure and measure the deformations at the specific input pressure. When the actuators were pressurized under 20.0 kPa, axisymmetric contractions were achieved. The theoretical model and FEM models produced the predictions in good agreement with experimental results, with slight mean relative differences regarding peak points, 3.4% and 5.4%, respectively. In addition, pilot tests suggest that the ring-shaped actuator can achieve the key tasks of robotic manipulators, such as gripping and holding.

Soft robots exhibit many exciting properties due to their softness and body compliance. However, to interact with the environment safely and to perform a task effectively, a soft robot faces a series of challenges such as dexterous motion, proprioceptive sensing, and robust control of its deformable bodies. To address these issues, this article presents a method for fabrication and dynamic modeling of a novel bidirectional bending soft pneumatic actuator that embeds a curvature proprioceptive sensor. The bidirectional bending deformation was generated by two similar chambers with a sinusoidal shape for reducing the internal dampness during bending deformation. An optical waveguide made from flexible poly (methyl methacrylate) material that is immune to the inlet pressure was embedded into the actuator body to measure its bending angle. A dynamic modeling framework based on step response and parameter fitting was proposed to establish a simple differential equation that can describe the nonlinear behavior of the soft actuator. Hence, a sliding mode controller is designed based on this differential equation and the Taylor expansion. The proposed dynamical model and the sliding mode controller were validated by trajectory tracking experiments. The performance of the bidirectional bending soft actuator, such as the linear output of the curvature sensor in different inflating patterns, the proprioceptive sensitiveness to the external environment, the output force, and large bending range under relatively small pressure, was evaluated by relevant experimental paradigms. Prototypes from the novel design and fabrication process demonstrated the soft actuator's potential applications in industrial grasping and hand rehabilitation.

Highly deformable and photoresponsive smart actuators are attracting increasing attention. Here, a high concentration of graphene is dispersed in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by combining the advantages of various dispersion methods. The composite and pure PDMS layers are used to fabricate bilayer actuators with a high capacity for rapid deformation. The fabricated bilayer actuators exhibit novel and interesting properties. A bilayer actuator containing a 30 wt % graphene composite can be deflected by 7.9 mm in the horizontal direction under infrared laser irradiation. The graphene concentration in the composite influences actuator adjustment to deformation and its response speed, and the composite also exhibits superhydrophobicity. On the basis of its superhydrophobicity and large deformation capacity, the actuator made with 30 wt % graphene composite is used to construct a beluga whale soft robot. The robot can swim quickly in water at an average speed of 6 mm/s, and it can cover a distance of 30 mm in 5 s when irradiated just once with an infrared laser. Actuators fabricated with this method can be used in artificial muscle, bionic grippers, and various soft robots that require actuators with large deformation capacities.

This article presents a model and experimental results for a new class of bending soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs) made from a single section of thin-walled flexible tubing. The actuator is formed by creasing the tubing into fin-like rectangular folds and inserting the folds through regularly spaced slits in a high-strength fabric. When pressurized, the folds inflate and press against one another to create a bending moment. The actuator bends with a constant-length arc formed by the fabric. The walls of the tubing behave like an inextensible membrane. This membrane reinforcement allows the actuator to create large motions with limited material strain. Accordingly, the actuator can actuate over large bending angles without generating large elastic restoration forces in its structure. Spacing the slits for the folds closer together increases the bending moment for the same angle and pressure. Three folded-tube SPAs with different fold-spacings were experimentally characterized for this work. The strongest of the three was able to produce >190 N of tension and an estimated 10 Nm of bending moment with only 60 kPa. Even after bending 160 degrees, the bending moment was still similar to 5.7 Nm at the same pressure. The model presented in this work describes the moment per unit pressure of the actuators over the measured range of motion. Soft robotics and actuators are becoming increasingly popular with diverse applications; their compliant structures and smooth deformations, which give rise to its softness, offer inherent safety to humans. This paper introduces the design of a twisting soft actuator based on pleated films that is inspired by the design of composite structures and that is capable of very large twisting angles. It has a simple design, it is easy to manufacture, low-cost, can be made from a wide range of inexpensive materials, can produce large twisting deformations (> 360°) and large torque (> 0.7 Nm). The proposed actuator design consists of a flat structure composed of two inextensible films that are bonded to form a pouch that expands like a balloon when pressurized. This pouch has anti-symmetrically arranged pleats on the surface of both films that cause the actuator to undergo a twisting along with the expansion of the volume. A parametric study of the actuator including the angle of the pleats, the number of pleats, the width of the actuator, the pleat width and the distance between pleats was conducted to determine the effect of each parameter on the twisting angle and the torque produced.

Although physical buttons provide tactile sensations that allow them to be identified and pressed without visual focus, their static nature limits their use for dynamic interfaces. Conversely, touchscreens offer highly flexible, task-specific interfaces, but they do not provide the tactile qualities needed for vision-free interaction. Here, we present a stretchable display that can change shape from a flat sheet into a dome when pressurized. The vanishing interface we designed uses hyperelastic light-emitting capacitors (HLECs) that actively emit light, sense strain, and detect finger presses. We characterize the stretch and luminance of the device as the thin sheet is pressurized. Interestingly, but not unexpectedly, these HLEC panels show a pressure-dependent luminance, which we use to highlight where they are being pressed, a visual display of haptic information. We further demonstrate the co-located touch sensing and light-emitting capabilities by developing an interactive memory game.

Technological progress in advanced materials and artificial intelligence has given an impetus to the development of humanoid robots that can mimic human appearance and interact with people effectively. Eyeball motions play a key role in facial expression of humanoid robots, and can greatly improve the relationship between the robots and the users. In this paper, we develop soft actuators which can achieve horizontal, vertical, and circular motions, for the application of robotic eyeballs. Inspired by nature, this soft actuator combines three linear dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). By controlling voltages applied to the three DEAs, this soft actuator is capable of realizing the horizontal, vertical, and circular motions. Each DEA is developed with optimal designs to achieve large voltage-induced deformation. The calculations on the optimal prestretches of the DEA are qualitatively consistent with the experiments. By combining two DEAs together, the soft actuator can mimic the horizontal motion of human eyeballs. By combing three DEAs together, the soft actuator can track desired motion trajectories effectively. This project can contribute to the development of humanoid robots with bioinspired design, lightweight, and low cost. The humanoid robot based on soft actuators can also improve the interaction with the users, due to its natural appearance, excellent safety and adaptability, and quiet operation.

Polymeric materials with compliant inner structures have brought great development to soft actuators, which have characters of low cost, high adaptability and operability, and being competent for complex motions simultaneously. From the viewpoint of muscle physiology, contraction is not limited to the shortening of muscle length but also means that a force can be produced in isometric condition without shortening. Generation of both force and stroke under a given stimulus are two fundamental functions. Accordingly, isometric and isotonic contraction are two main categories. In this work, a semi-crystal-based polyurethane soft actuator (PSA) was fabricated with abilities to perform two basic contractions. Effect of structures and thermodynamic properties on muscle contraction capability were investigated. The degree of contraction can be easily manipulated and memorized by changing crystallinity, chain orientation through preloaded and stimulated conditions. Due to the high sensitivity of crystal phase to temperature, sensing ability are reported here and energy source from enthalpy change are unprecedentedly explored. This work expands mechanism of thermal-stimulated muscle to a new direction and realizes the multi-functions of muscle in one single polymer without any complicated structure design and control system.

Fluidic mechanisms have stimulated research and development in minimally invasive surgery instrumentations, because of their good performance in limited size and their force/torque generation with respect to other types of actuation systems. Fluidic solutions can be divided in two major classes: (i) elastic fluidic actuators and (ii) piston-cylinder actuators. Elastic fluidic actuators generate lower forces with smaller displacements; nevertheless, piston-cylinder solutions require seals, which can generate friction and require maintenance costs for a good reliability. The proposed solution is based on a hybrid soft-rigid actuation, which aims to overcome the limitations of both previous solutions while preserving the main advantages of the overall fluidic approach. This approach results in very compact, powerful, and low-cost actuators, which are highly customizable and adaptable to specific constraints, in medical applications but even beyond. This article proposes a novel design of hybrid soft-rigid actuators to be used as basic mechanical joints for enabling pitch and roll degrees of freedom for a miniature robotic arm. Forces up to 1.4 N and up to 2.77 N have been obtained for the above joints, respectively, and even better performance can be reached (up to 3 N) with further improvements, as demonstrated in this article.

Soft robot has become a hot topic recently due to its distinct advantages over traditional rigid robots such as high deformability and good impact resistance. However, the coupled deflections of flexile materials bring challenges to soft robotic research in many aspects such as kinematic modeling, dynamic analysis, and control. Besides, unwanted deformations might enlarge external dimensions of soft robots, causing a reduction in the efficiency and bringing about unexpected or harmful contacts with surrounding environments that will significantly affect the robots' performance. In this study, we propose a new inflatable soft actuator driven by two spiral chambers twined with fibers for the first time. A key feature of this actuator is that it possesses a pure and high-efficient torsional motion with no bending and extension movements when works without load, which reduces the difficulties of theoretical analysis and control to some extent. Kinematic model is established by combining virtual work principle and elastic strain energy function for nonlinear flexible materials. The new soft torsional actuator module is carefully designed and fabricated, of which both the kinematic property and output torque are investigated experimentally. Results show that the module exhibits good linearity with air pressure ranging from 35 to 100 kPa, and can provide a torsion angle of up to 110° with an angular displacement accuracy of ±2° in empty loaded conditions; the maximum output torque reaches 0.026 N·m with the corresponding air pressure of 100 kPa. Finally, three soft robots are assembled by utilizing this new, inflatable, pure, soft torsional actuator, and successfully carry out different manipulating tasks. This work might provide some insights into the design of linear soft actuators without coupled deformations in future.
