We measure Kapton, FeBO3 and sapphire in the terahertz region with a time-domain spectrometer and fit the measurement with Lorentz and Debye oscillators as well as scattering to extract the refractive index and absorption under 5 THz.

Abstract

International audience; We present new features of the Fit@TDS software for the analysis of polar liquids and multilayer systems. We also show that the modeling of the absorption coefficient of polar liquids can be improved around 2 THz. Hence, this software will enable us to retrieve the parameters of the models depicting polar liquids. It will help to analyze and compare charges motions, playing an important role in biology and chemistry with such effects as protein solvation. Finally, the implementation of a scattering model will improve the accuracy of the results.

Abstract

International audience; We report on our recent progress in the development of a device for light-matter interaction enhancement in the full terahertz range for precise spectroscopy of minor-volume samples. The efficient confinement of a broadband terahertz pulse to a few-nL-volume was achieved, opening new perspectives for chemical and biological applications. We discuss modifications in the fabrication process leading to the improvement of our technique, following the detailed characterization of the device performances.

International audience; We designed, fabricated and characterized a micro-resonator in the terahertz range to increase light matter interaction using near-field optics. The goal of our device is to confine a THz electric field in a volume smaller than the diffraction limit to enhance light matter interaction with subwavelength samples. We aim at field confinement on a length scale of a few tens of nanometers.

Abstract

International audience; We report on our recent progress toward bio-photonic applications of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. First, we developed a technique for the confinement of broadband terahertz pulses to a sub-wavelength-volume, and will present its applications to study biological samples. Second, we will discuss the analysis of terahertz time-trace data from bio samples using our Fit@TDS software based on the time-domain optimization algorithm that enables direct fitting of sample parameters. The combination of those (the experimental and the modelling) techniques is a robust tool for terahertz bio-photonics.

Abstract

International audience; We report on a method and an associated open source software, Fit@TDS, working on an average personal computer. The method is based on the fitting of a time-trace data of a terahertz time-domain-spectroscopy system enabling the retrieval of the refractive index of a dielectric sample and the resonance parameters of a metasurface (quality factor, absorption losses, etc.). The software includes commonly used methods where the refractive index is extracted from frequency domain data. However, these methods are limited, for instance in case of a high noise level or when an absorption peak saturates the absorption spectrum bringing the signal to the noise level. Our software allows to use a new method where the refractive indices are directly fitted from the time-trace. The idea is to model a material or a metamaterial through parametric physical models (Drude-Lorentz model and time-domain coupled mode theory) and to implement the subsequent refractive index in the propagation model to simulate the time-trace. Then, an optimization algorithm is used to retrieve the parameters of the model corresponding to the studied material/metamaterial. In this paper, we explain the method and test it on fictitious samples to probe the feasibility and reliability of the proposed model. Finally, we used Fit@TDS on real samples of high resistivity silicon, lactose and gold metasurface on quartz to show the capacity of our method

Abstract

International audience; Additive manufacturing is a promising tool for the rapid prototyping of terahertz metamaterials at low-cost. In this letter, a terahertz metamaterial is fabricated using a microplotter system on a flexible polyimide film. The limits of the rapid prototyping technique is investigated both experimentally and numerically in order to determine the spectral range accessible by the fabricated metamaterials. Here, the metamaterial is composed of four arrays of metal-insulatormetal (MIM) antennas exhibiting a Fabry Perot resonance at frequencies from 0.25 to 0.8 THz. From a structural analysis of the printed antennas, we determined that the printing resolution is limited to about 5 µm. The arrays are analyzed by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). The good agreement between THz-TDS measurements and numerical simulations showed that the microplotter system can be used for rapid prototyping by adjusting a limited number of fabrication parameters.; La fabrication d'additifs est un outil prometteur pour le prototypage rapide de métamatériaux en térahertz à faible coût. Dans cette lettre, un métamatériau térahertz est fabriqué à l'aide d'un système de microtraceurs sur un film polyimide flexible. Les limites de la technique de prototypage rapide sont étudiées à la fois expérimentalement et numériquement afin de déterminer la gamme spectrale accessible par les métamatériaux fabriqués. Ici, le métamatériau est composé de quatre réseaux d'antennes métal-isolant-métal (MIM) présentant une résonance de Fabry Perot à des fréquences de 0,25 à 0,8 THz. Une analyse structurelle des antennes imprimées nous a permis de déterminer que la résolution d'impression est limitée à environ 5μm. Les réseaux sont analysés par spectroscopie dans le domaine temporel du térahertz (THz-TDS). Le bon accord entre les mesures THz-TDS et les simulations numériques a montré que le système de microplotter peut être utilisé pour le prototypage rapide en ajustant un nombre limité de paramètres de fabrication.

Abstract

High power single mode quantum cascade lasers with a narrow far field are important for several applications including surgery or military countermeasure. Existing technologies suffer from drawbacks such as operation temperature and scalability. In this paper we introduce a fabrication approach that potentially solves simultaneously these remaining limitations. We demonstrate and characterize deep etched, buried photonic crystal quantum cascade lasers emitting around a wavelength of 8.5 μm. The active region was dry etched before being regrown with semi-insulating Fe:InP. This fabrication strategy results in a refractive index contrast of 10% allowing good photonic mode control, and simultaneously provides good thermal extraction during operation. Single mode emission with narrow far field pattern and peak powers up to 0.88 W at 263 K were recorded from the facet of the photonic crystal laser, and lasing operation was maintained up to room temperature. The lasing modes emitted from square photonic crystal mesas with a side length of 550μm, were identified as slow Bloch photonic crystal modes by means of three-dimensional photonic simulations and measurements.

International audience; We designed, fabricated, characterized and performed the first experimental uses of a device assembling a waveguide and two antennas. The goal of our device is to confine the broadband pulse of a time-domain spectroscopy setup in the slot of the waveguide with the minimum losses and dispersion and with the thinnest slot. With this device, we aimed at analysis a bio sample of the volume below 200 μ1.

Abstract

International audience; In biology, molecules and macromolecules such as sugars, proteins, DNA, RNA, etc., are of utmost importance. Detecting their presence as well as getting information on their actual structure is still a challenge in many cases. The vibrational states of such molecules correspond to a spectral range extending from infrared to terahertz. Spectroscopy is used for the detection and the identification of such compounds and their structure. Terahertz spectroscopy of a biosample is challenging for two main reasons: the high terahertz absorption by water molecules in the sample; and the small size of the sample - its volume is usually smaller than the cube of the terahertz wavelength, thus the light-matter interaction is extremely reduced. In this paper, we present the design, fabrication, characterization, and first typical use of a biophotonic device that aims to increase the light?matter interaction to enable terahertz spectroscopy of very small samples over a broad band (0.2-2 THz). Finally, we demonstrate the validity of our approach by time-domain spectroscopy of samples of a few µL.

Abstract

ZnO has great potential for devices in the mid IR and the THz range through the use of intersubband (ISB) transitions in multiple quantum wells (MQWs), although exploiting these transitions requires great control of the epitaxial layers as well as of the physics involved. In this work we present an analysis of non-polar ZnO grown homoepitaxially by molecular beam epitaxy on m-plane ZnO substrates as an ISB optical absorber. The MQWs were characterized under a 45°-bevelled multi-pass waveguide configuration allowing the observation at room temperature of an ISB transition in the 4-6 μm region for p-polarized incident light.

Abstract

We report on the dynamic behavior of dual-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) in continuous wave and intermittent continuous wave operation. We investigate inherent etaloning effects based on spectrally resolved light-current-voltage (LIV) characterization and perform time-resolved spectral analysis of thermal chirping during long (>5 µs) current pulses. The theoretical aspects of the observed behavior are discussed using a combination of finite element method simulations and transfer matrix method calculations of dual-section DFB structures. Based on these results, we demonstrate how the internal etaloning can be minimized using anti-reflective (AR) coatings. Finally, the potential and benefits of these devices for high precision trace gas analysis are demonstrated using a laser absorption spectroscopic setup. Thereby, the atmospherically highly relevant compounds CO2 (including its major isotopologues), CO and N2O are simultaneously determined with a precision of 0.16 ppm, 0.22 ppb and 0.26 ppb, respectively, using a 1-s integration time and an optical path-length of 36 m. Abstract

International audience; High index contrast periodic structures can be exploited to perform an arbitrarily adjustable spatio-temporal molding of light at the wavelength scale. This tight control of photons is obtained through a shaping of resonant modes and a suitable adjustment of their coupling with propagative modes. In this talk, surface addressable (or above the light line) Bloch modes in photonic crystal membranes (PCMs) will be investigated. The concepts governing the properties of these modes will be first presented. It will be demonstrated that simple models can be considered to understand their behavior and, more specifically, their ability to capture photons during the desired lifetime. Bloch modes with a very large band width or a very high Q factor can be easily designed this way. The wide application range of these PCMs will be illustrated by different devices. Low Q Bloch modes will be first used as efficient and broadband reflectors and exploited to realize compact and efficient vertical cavity lasers with unprecedented functionalities. In addition, it will be shown that this kind of mirrors can be bent in order to confine photons in the 3 directions even in low index materials, opening the way to a new class of emitters and sensors. Finally, the exploitation of high Q Bloch modes to design highly directional thermal emitters with wavelength selectivity will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; The positive effects of various perturbations introduced in a bidimensional photonic-crystal patterned membrane on its integrated absorption are investigated numerically and theoretically. Two phenomena responsible for the enhanced absorption observed are identified: an increase of the spectral density of modes, obtained thanks to folding mechanisms in the reciprocal lattice, and a better coupling of the modes with the incident light. By introducing a proper pseudodisordered pattern, we show that those two effects can be exploited so as to overcome the integrated absorption obtained for an optimized and single pattern unit cell photonic crystal.

Abstract

International audience; In silicon-based solar cells, a substantial part of the energy losses is related to the charge carriers thermalization in the UV-blue range and the week carriers collection at these wavelenghts. To avoid this issue, we introduce a new concept which combines a rare-earths doped thin layer with a photonic crystal (PC) layer, allowing an efficient conversion from UV-blue photons to near-IR photons. We report on the feasibility of such a nanostructured down-converter module using an active rare-earth doped CaYAlO4 thin layer and a silicon nitride PC on top. By means of optical numerical simulations, the promising potentialities of the concept are demonstrated.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we present the design, analysis, and experimental results on the integration of 2D photonic crystals in thin film photovoltaic solar cells based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon. We introduce an analytical approach based on time domain coupled mode theory to investigate the impact of the photon lifetime and anisotropy of the optical resonances on the absorption efficiency. Specific design rules are derived from this analysis. We also show that, due to the specific properties of the photonic crystal resonances, the angular acceptance of such solar cells is particularly high. Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis simulations show that the absorption in the a-Si:H active layers, integrated from 300 to 750nm, is only decreased from 65.7% to 60% while the incidence angle is increased from 0 to 55°. Experimental results confirm the stability of the incident light absorption in the patterned stack, for angles of incidence up to 50°.

Abstract

International audience; Ytterbium (Yb) doped fiber lasers are known to be affected by the creation of color centers during lasing (socalled photodarkening (PD)). In a previous work, this defect creation was investigated from a spectroscopic point of view, showing the presence of traces (ppb) of thulium (Tm) in the Yb doped fiber. It was shown that Tm has a strong impact on the defect creation process involved in PD. In this paper, we compare the results from the literature with our Tm hypothesis, without finding any contradiction. Moreover, this hypothesis can be an explanation for the discrepancies in the literature.

Abstract

International audience; In order to achieve high efficiency photovoltaic devices and sensors, we propose to implement photonic crystals on thin absorbing layers in such a way to generate two Bloch mode resonances with opposite symmetries. Through FDTD and RCWA simulations, we track and adjust the characteristics of these modes so as to reach their degeneracy. Design and simulations were carried out considering a hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer. We demonstrate that up to 92% absorption can be achieved, far above the 50% limit corresponding to the critical coupling condition between an incident wave and an optical resonance. Moreover, the robustness of the absorption peak was tested by varying both the topographical parameters of the PhC membrane and the angle of incidence. Finally, some guidelines are provided to generalize our approach for the design of broadband absorbers.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we propose a method for tailoring the absorption in a photonic crystal membrane. For that purpose, we first applied Time Domain Coupled Mode Theory to such a subwavelength membrane and demonstrated that 100% resonant absorption can be reached even for a symmetric membrane, if degenerate modes are involved. Design rules were then derived from this model in order to tune the absorption. Subsequently, Finite Difference Time Domain simulations were used as a proof of concept and carried out on a low absorbing material (extinction coefficient=10-2) with a high refractive index corresponding to the optical indices of amorphous silicon at around 720 nm. In doing so, 85% resonant absorption was obtained, which is significantly higher than the commonly reported 50% maximum value. Those results were finally analyzed and confronted to theory so as to extend our method to other materials, configurations and applications.

Abstract

Yb 3+ -doped fiber is one of the most promising hosts for high-power fiber lasers [1]. However, in the late 1990s, photodarkening effect, i.e., the creation of color centers induced by light, was observed and reported [2]. Like in other rare-earth-doped materials, a broad visible and near infrared absorption band appears during laser operation, which strongly lowers the laser efficiency. We have shown how thulium impurities, present at the parts-per-billion weights (ppb) level in the raw doping material, can induce UV emission which in turn creates defects responsible for photodarkening in ytterbium-doped continuous-wave fiber lasers [3]. This new vision is not in contradiction with others but it gives for the first time a possible explanation for UV defect creation by an infrared beam.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we discuss on light management in silicon thin film solar cells, using photonic crystals (PhC) structures. We particularly focus on photovoltaic devices including amorphous silicon absorbers patterned as 2D PhCs. Physical principles and design rules leading to the optimized configuration of the patterned cell are discussed by means of optical simulations performed on realistic thin film solar cell stacks. Theoretically, a maximum 40%rel increase of integrated absorption in the a-Si:H layer of the patterned cell is expected compared to the unpatterned case. Moreover, both simulation and optical characterization of the fabricated cells demonstrate the robustness of their optical properties with regards to the angle of incidence of the light and to the fabrication induced defects in the PhCs. Finally, the impact of the surface recombination due to the generation of new free surfaces with higher defect densities is addressed. We demonstrate that patterning still induces a substantial increase of the conversion efficiency, with a reasonable surface recombination velocity.

Abstract

International audience; Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers can present holes in spectral gain in Wavelength Division Multiplexing operation. The origin of this inhomogeneous saturation behavior is still a subject of controversy. In this paper we present both an experimental methods and a gain's model. Our experimental method allow us to measure the first homogeneous linewidth of the 1.5 µm erbium emission with gain spectral hole burning consistently with the other measurement in the literature and the model explains the differences observed in literature between GSHB and other measurement methods.

International audience; In rare-earth-doped silica optical fibres, the homogeneous distribution of amplifying ions and part of their spectroscopic properties are usually improved by adding selected elements, such as phosphorus or aluminum, as structural modifier. In erbium ion (Er3+) doped fibres, phosphorus preferentially coordinates to Er3+ ions to form regular cages around it. However, the crystalline structures described in literature never gave particular spectroscopic signature. In this article, we report emission and excitation spectra of Er3+ in a transparent phosphorus-doped silica fibre preform. The observed line features observed at room and low temperature are attributed to ErPO4 crystallites.

Abstract

International audience; Er3+ doped Y3Al5O12 (Er:YAG) single crystal fibers, with a diameter of 800 μm and a length up to 80 cm, were grown by the micro-pulling-down technique. The structural and optical characterization of these fibers shows a perfect single crystalline structure and a very high optical quality suitable for laser operation. With 6 cm long samples, we demonstrated a continuous wave laser delivering an output power of 950 mW for a pump power of 36 W coming from fiber-coupled laser diodes emitting at 1532 nm. To our knowledge, this is the first laser ever achieved with directly grown Er:YAG single crystal fibers.

Abstract

In this paper, we present the integration of combined front and back 1D and 2D diffraction gratings with different periods, within thin film photovoltaic solar cells based on crystalline silicon layers. The grating structures have been designed considering both the need for incident light absorption enhancement and the technological feasibility. Long wavelength absorption is increased thanks to the long period (750 nm) back grating, while the incident light reflection is reduced by using a short period (250 nm) front grating. The simulated short circuit current in a solar cell combining a front and a back grating structures with a 1.2 µm thick c-Si layer, together with the back electrode and TCO layers, is increased up to 30.3 mA/cmsup2/sup, compared to 18.4 mA/cmsup2/supfor a reference stack, as simulated using the AM1.5G solar spectrum intensity distribution from 300 nm to 1100 nm, and under normal incidence.

Abstract

In this work we show the potential of the ZnO/ZnMgO material system for intersubband (ISB)-based devices. This family of alloys presents a unique set of properties that makes it highly attractive for THz emission as well as strong coupling regimes: it has a very large longitudinal optical phonon energy of 72 meV, it can be doped up to ~1021 cm-3, it is very ionic with a large difference between the static and high frequency dielectric constants, and it can be grown homoepitaxially on native substrates with low defect densities. The films analyzed here are grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on a non-polar orientation, the m-plane, with varying QW thicknesses and 30% Mg concentrations in the barrier, and are examined with polarization-dependent IR absorption spectroscopy. The QW band structure and the intersubband transitions energies are modeled considering many body effects, which are key to predict correctly the measured values.
