A series of CoPd/KIT-6 bimetallic catalysts with various Co:Pd molar ratios at different calcination temperatures were prepared and used for the direct synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2. These catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, low and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental mapping and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) methods. It was found that the particle size, electronic interactions, morphology, and textural properties of these catalysts as well as their catalytic activity in the reaction of H2 with O2 were affected by Co addition and different calcination temperatures. Also, the results showed that while the H2O2 selectivity depends on Pd2+ species, the H2 conversion is related to Pd0 active sites. Among these catalysts, CoPd/KIT-6 calcined at 350 °C (CoPd/KIT-350 catalyst) showed the best catalytic activity with 50 % of H2O2 selectivity and 51 % conversion of H2.

Recent years have seen the wide diffusion of composite materials in many manufacturing fields and the rapid evolution of additive manufacturing. Lately, these technologies have been combined practically allowing the fabrication of continuous-fiber reinforced polymer parts via 3D-printing. This topic is gaining attention both in the research community and among industrial users. Because of their novelty, such manufacturing methods are, however, still not thoroughly understood, and their performance limits have not yet been fully characterized. This study aims at analyzing the mechanical resistance of components made with continuous carbon fiber (CCF) thermoplastic materials by means of fused filament fabrication (FFF), focusing on the influence of the fiber orientation on such properties. In particular, both the tensile and the bending characteristics are evaluated according to the relative test standards, in specimens with both unidirectional and mixed-isotropic configurations. The experimental findings are compared with a set of reference specimens made with a base polymer filled with chopped “short” carbon fibers, allowing one to appreciate the advantages or limitations of the different fiber arrangements.

Commercialization of lead halide perovskite-based devices is hindered by their instability towards environmental conditions. In particular, water promotes fast decomposition, leading to a drastic decrease in device performance. Integrating water-splitting active species within ancillary layers to the perovskite absorber might be a solution to this, as they could convert incoming water into oxygen and hydrogen, preserving device performance. Here, we suggest that a CuSCN nanoplatelete/p-type semiconducting polymer composite, combining hole extraction and transport properties with water oxidation activity, transforms incoming water molecules and triggers the in situ p-doping of the conjugated polymer, improving transport of photocharges. Insertion of the nanocomposite into a lead perovskite solar cell with a direct photovoltaic architecture causes stable device performance for 28 days in high-moisture conditions. Our findings demonstrate that the engineering of a hole extraction layer with possible water-splitting additives could be a viable strategy to reduce the impact of moisture in perovskite devices. The poor environmental stability of lead halide perovskites limits their performance in solar cells. Here, a CuSCN nanoplateletes/p-type semiconducting polymer composite layer enables the stable performance of a solar cell for 28 days in high-moisture conditions, attributed to water splitting.

Advancements in electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) technology require the concomitant use of novel efficient electrode materials and viable electrode manufacturing methods. Cost-effectiveness, scalability and sustainability are key-drivers for fulfilling product development chain accepted by worldwide legislations. Herein, we report a scalable and sprayable “green” electrode material-based ink based on activated carbon and single-/few-layer graphene (SLG/FLG) flakes. We show that, contrary to commercial reduced graphene oxide, defect-free and flat SLG/FLG flakes reduce the friction of ions over the electrode films, while spray coating deposition of our ink maximises the electrolyte accessibility to the electrode surface area. Sprayed SLG/FLG flakes-based EDLCs display superior rate capability performance (e.g., specific energies of 31.5, 23.7 and 12.5 Wh kg−1 at specific powers of 150, 7500 and 30000 W kg−1, respectively) compared to both SLG/FLG flakes-free devices and commercial-like EDLCs produced by slurry-coating method. The use of SLG/FLG flakes enables our sprayed EDLCs to operate in a wide range of temperature (−40/+100°C) compatible with ionic liquid/organic solvent-based electrolytes, overcoming the specific power limits of AC-based EDLCs. A prototype EDLCs stack consisting of multiple large-area EDLCs, each one displaying a capacitance of 25 F, demonstrates the industrial potential of our technology.

Hybrid quantum wells are electronic structures where charge carriers are confined along stacked inorganic planes, separated by insulating organic moieties. 2D quantum-confined hybrid materials are of great interest from a solid-state physics standpoint because of the rich many-body phenomena they host, their tunability and easy synthesis, allowing the creation of material libraries. In addition, from a technological point of view, 2D hybrids are promising candidates for efficient, tunable, low-cost materials impacting a broad range of optoelectronic devices. Different approaches and materials have, therefore, been investigated, with the notable example of 2D metal halide hybrid perovskites. Despite the remarkable properties of such materials, the presence of toxic elements like lead is not desirable in applications and their ionic lattices may represent a limiting factor for stability under operating conditions. Therefore, non-ionic 2D materials made with non-toxic elements are preferable. In order to expand the library of possible hybrid quantum well materials, herein, we consider an alternative platform based on non-toxic, self-assembled, metal-organic chalcogenides. While the optical properties have been recently explored and some unique excitonic characters highlighted, photo-generation of carriers and their transport in these lamellar inorganic/organic nanostructures and critical optoelectronic aspects remain totally unexplored. We hereby report the first investigation on the electrical properties of the air-stable [AgSePh]∞ 2D coordination polymer in the form of nanocrystal (NC) films readily synthesized in situ and at low temperature, compatible with flexible plastic substrates. The wavelength-dependent photo-response of the NC films suggests the possible use of this material as a near-UV photodetector. We therefore built a lateral photo-detector, achieving a sensitivity of 0.8 A W-1 at 370 nm, thanks to a photoconduction mechanism, and a cut-off frequency of ∼400 Hz, and validated its reliability as an air-stable UV detector on flexible substrates.

Hollow structures made of nanoscale building blocks are of great interest as catalysts for electrochemical water splitting. Here we report a solution-phase synthesis of yolk–shell Co3O4/Co1−xRuxO2 microspheres (MSs) having a shell made of Co1−xRuxO2 nanorods and the core of Co3O4. Benefiting from the peculiar morphology and the synergy between the different materials present in the MSs, the latter exhibit enhanced electrochemical oxygen evolution activity and long-term stability in acidic media. The catalyst achieves a catalytic current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of only 240 mV, a small Tafel slope of 70 mV dec−1, and a high mass activity of 600 A g−1 and maintains its activity throughout a 24 h chronopotentiometry tests at constant current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm−2.

Aim: To realize and characterize a new generation of keratin-coated gold nanoparticles (Ker-AuNPs) as highly efficient photosensitive nanosized therapeutics for plasmonic photothermal (PPT) therapy. Materials & methods: The chemical, physical, morphological and photothermal properties of Ker-AuNPs are investigated using dynamic light scattering, ζ-potential, UV–Visible, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution thermography. In vitro experiments are performed on a human glioblastoma cell line (i.e., U87-MG), using viability assays, transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, cytometric analyses and PPT experiments. Results: Experiments confirm the excellent biocompatibility of Ker-AuNPs, their efficient cellular uptake and localized photothermal heating capabilities. Conclusion: The reported structural and functional properties pointed out these Ker-AuNPs as a promising new tool in the field of biocompatible photothermal agents for PPT treatments against cancer-related diseases.

Various strategies have been proposed to engineer the band gap of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) while preserving their structure and composition and thus ensuring spectral stability of the emission color. An aspect that has only been marginally investigated is how the type of surface passivation influences the structural/color stability of AMX3 perovskite NCs composed of two different M2+ cations. Here, we report the synthesis of blue-emitting Cs-oleate capped CsCdxPb1-xBr3 NCs, which exhibit a cubic perovskite phase containing also Cd-rich domains of Ruddlesden-Popper phases (RP- phases). The RP domains spontaneously transforms into pure orthorhombic perovskite ones upon NC ageing and the emission color of the NCs shifts from blue to green over days. On the other hand, post-synthesis ligand exchange with various Cs-carboxylate or ammonium bromide salts, right after NC synthesis, provides monocrystalline NCs with cubic phase, highlighting the metastability of the RP domains. When the NCs are treated with Cs-carboxylates (including Cs-oleate), most of the Cd2+ ions are expelled from the NCs, the NCs’ phase evolves from cubic to orthorhombic and their emission color changes from blue to green. Instead, when the NCs are coated with ammonium bromides, the loss of Cd2+ ions is suppressed and the NCs tend to retain their blue emission (both in colloidal dispersions and in electroluminescent devices), as well as their cubic phase, over time. The improved compositional and structural stability in these latter cases is ascribed to the saturation of surface vacancies, which may act as channels for the expulsion of Cd2+ ions from the NCs.

The search for materials substituting toxic lead in metal halide perovskites has recently placed emphasis on the Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskite as a possible candidate. The poor light-emissive features of this species, mainly associated to the indirect nature of the band gap and the strongly bound exciton, however, currently make it unsuitable for solid-state lighting applications. Doping with lanthanides is an established strategy to implement luminescence in poorly emissive materials, with the additional advantage of tuning the wavelength of emission independently from the host band structure. We discuss here the impact of Eu- and Yb-doping on the absorption and emission properties of Cs2AgBiBr6 polycrystalline thin films, obtained from solution-processing of hydrothermally synthesized bulk crystalline powders, by combining experiments and density functional theory calculations. Eu(III) incorporation does not lead to the characteristic 5D0→7F2 emission feature at 2 eV, while only a weak sub band-gap radiative emission ascribed to a trap-assisted recombination process is reported. On the other hand, we demonstrate that Yb(III) incorporated in the bulk double perovskite leads to an intense and exclusive photoluminescence emission in the near-infrared (NIR) from thin films, as a result of the efficient sensitization of the lanthanide centered 2F5/2→2F7/2 transition, with favorable mid-gap energetic position. Yb-doping may be thus exploited for the future development of stable and sustainable perovskite NIR-light emitters.

Oxidized single walled carbon nanohorns (ox-SWCNH) were electrodeposited onto gold microelectrode arrays in conjunction with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and polystirenesulfonate (PSS), and the properties of the new composite material for neural recording and stimulation were assessed. PEDOT/ox-SWCNH composites were compared with films prepared with one of the most notorious carbonaceous material in this field, the oxidized multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes (ox-MWCNT). The PEDOT/ox-SWCNH exhibited superior charge transfer capability, reflecting greater electroactive surface, as confirmed by SEM and EIS characterizations. As a consequence, a charge injection limit of 11.6mC/cm⁠2 was observed for the new composite, which is higher than the one of PEDOT/ox-MWCNT (8.7mC/cm⁠2). Having confirmed comparable neural recording performance, the PEDOT/ ox-SWCNH composite results very promising for improving therapeutic electrical stimulation in the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Among these, a prominent role is occupied by oxidative stress, with consequences for tissue homeostasis and development. Studies in altered gravity are relevant for both Earth and space biomedicine, but their implementation using whole organisms is often troublesome. Here we utilize planarians, simple worm model for stem cell and regeneration biology, to characterize the pathogenic mechanisms brought by artificial gravity alterations. In particular, we provide a comprehensive evaluation of molecular responses in intact and regenerating specimens, and demonstrate a protective action from the space-apt for nanotechnological antioxidant cerium oxide nanoparticles.

Pt nanoparticles deposited on mesoporous carbon (Pt/C) represent a benchmark catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acid and alkaline conditions. However, it shows an order of magnitude lower activity under alkaline media compared to acid media. Moreover, the activity of this catalyst decreases rapidly under operational conditions due to both migration and aggregation of the metal particles, leading to a rapid decline in the number of active sites. We show here a Cu and Ru-based catalyst fabricated by slow electrodeposition of Ru onto a nanostructured Cu layer grown, in turn, on the top of a Ti substrate. Our catalyst has a high and stable HER activity, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C catalyst under alkaline conditions. The high activity and prolonged stability are attributed to the peculiar structure of our electrode, in which Cu nanoplates are directly attached perpendicular to the Ti substrate, providing a high surface area support onto which Ru nanocrystals are bound. This makes the Cu–Ru/Ti electrode one of the most active (−10 mA cm2 of HER current at only −23 mV overpotential) and stable electrocatalysts (no activity degradation for 100 h at −0.2 V) reported to date for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are currently the leading thin-film photovoltaic technology owing to their high power conversion efficiency (PCE), as well as their low-cost and facile manufacturing process. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been reported to improve both the PCE and the stability of PSCs when incorporated across the device's layered configuration. Hereby, a two-fold engineering approach is implemented in inverted PSCs by using ultra-thin Bi2Te3 flakes, i.e.: (1) to dope the electron transport layer (ETL) and (2) to form a protective interlayer above the ETL. Thorough steady-state and time-resolved transport analyses reveal that our first engineering approach improves the electron extraction rate and thus the overall PCE (+6.6% vs. reference cells), as a result of the favourable energy level alignment between the perovskite, the ETL and the cathode. Moreover, the Bi2Te3 interlayer, through the second engineering approach, facilitates further the electron transport and in addition protects the underlying structure against chemical instability effects, leading to enhanced device performance and stability. By combining the two engineering approaches, our optimised PSCs reach a PCE up to 19.46% (+15.2% vs. reference cells) and retain more than 80% of their initial PCE, after the burn-in phase, over 1100 h under continous 1 sun illumination. These performances are among the highest reported in the literature for inverted PSCs.

Poly(3,4-ethylentedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most studied materials for organic bioelectronics, supercapacitors and organic photovoltaics. Its low impedance is ascribed to the so-called volumetric capacitance, a property that phenomenologically correlates the capacitive coupling/charge storage in devices to the PEDOT:PSS volume/thickness. Here we investigate the correlation between the capacitance and the electroactive surface area (ESA) for large-volume spin-cast PEDOT:PSS electrodes. We measure the capacitance with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and characterize the surface morphology by atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Capacitance of PEDOT:PSS films scales with volume up to ~5 × 106 ?m3 but is saturated at larger volumes. This scaling behavior is paralleled by the scaling of the ESA, hence the ratio between the effective capacitance and ESA remains constant across the whole data set, thus showing that the specific areal capacitance is indeed the relevant material property of PEDOT:PSS. EIS data fit supports the experimental evidence obtained by CV, further revealing that the diffusion time constant is also saturated at high volumes. This supports the scenario where the effective capacitance relates to the ion accessible ESA, and shows that the saturation of the capacitance arises from a change of ion penetration from a diffusive (at small volumes) to a non-diffusive regime at large volumes.

The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 polymorphs has been frequently debated in literature. Numerous studies reported that rutile TiO2 exhibits low photocatalytic activity, and it is generally accepted that rutile has lower photoactivity than the anatase phase. Herein, we studied the photocatalytic activity of phase-pure rutile TiO2 nanoparticles prepared via microwave-assisted hydrothermal method (MW-R NPs). The syntheses were performed with relatively short reaction time (1−3h) at 180 °C using a microwave digestion system. The samples were characterized in detail and then tested in the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO). We demonstrate that the photodegradation of MO with MW-R NPs is highly efficient in the presence of H2O2. By employing 4.4 mM H2O2, ~90% of total decolorization was achieved after 2 min of UV-A irradiation. At the same experimental conditions, MO degradation with Degussa P25 TiO2 was only ~7%. The superior photoactivity of MW-R NPs was related to the effective photogeneration of O2•− radicals as revealed by EPR investigation. These rutile nanoparticles are excellent photocatalysts in the presence of H2O2, signifying that this oxygen source react easily with the photogenerated holes on the MW-R NPs, and thus the interfacial charge transfer lead to the formation of a large amount of O2•− radicals.

We report the composition-dependent optical properties of Bi-doped Cs2Ag1-xNaxInCl6 nanocrystals (NCs) having a double perovskite crystal structure. Their photoluminescence (PL) was characterized by a large Stokes shift, and the PL quantum yield increased with the amount of Na up to ∼22% for the Cs2Ag0.4Na0.6InCl6 stoichiometry. The presence of Bi3+ dopants was crucial to achieve high PL quantum yields (PLQYs) as nondoped NC systems were not emissive. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the substitution of Ag+ with Na+ leads to localization of AgCl6 energy levels above the valence band maximum, whereas doping with Bi3+ creates BiCl6 states below the conduction band minimum. As such, the PL emission stems from trapped emission between states localized in the BiCl6 and AgCl6 octahedra, respectively. Our findings indicated that both the partial replacement of Ag+ with Na+ ions and doping with Bi3+ cations are essential in order to optimize the PL emission of these systems.

This work reports a systematic and quantitative evaluation of the effects induced on the adhesive properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) substrates by various vacuum cold-plasma treatments. In particular, surface activation of the CFRP substrates was performed using several combinations of exposure time, plasma power, and processing gas (air, O-2, Ar and N-2). By comparing these plasma treatments with conventional techniques of abrasion and peel ply, it was possible to substantially increase the performance of the adhesively bonded joints made by overlapping the CFRP substrates with a structural epoxy resin. On each differently treated surface, measurements of roughness and of wettability were performed, allowing the evaluation of the increase in surface energy after the plasma treatment. XPS analyses allowed the identification of the chemical state of the substrates and showed an in-depth functionalization of the outer layer of the CFRP material. The experimental results show that an engineered plasma treatment of the CFRP substrates allows one to modify the surface morphology and both wetting and chemical activation properties of the treated surfaces, resulting in an increased mechanical shear strength of the joints.

Harvesting all sources of available clean energy is an essential strategy to contribute to healing current dependence on non-sustainable energy sources. Recently, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have gained visibility as new mechanical energy harvester offering a valid alternative to batteries, being particularly suitable for portable devices. Here, the increased capacitance of a few-layer graphene-based electrode is obtained by incorporating nitrogen-doped graphene (N-graphene), enabling a 3-fold enhancement in TENGs’ power output. The dependence of TENGs’ performance on the electronic properties of different N-graphene types, varying in the doping concentration and in the relative content of N-pyridinic and N-graphitic sites is investigated. These sites have different electron affinities, and synergistically contribute to the variation of the capacitive and resistive properties of N-graphene and consequently, TENG performance. It is demonstrated that the power enhancement of the TENG occurs when the N-graphene, an n-semiconductor, is interfaced between the positive triboelectric material and the electrode, while a deterioration of the electrical performance is observed when it is placed at the interface with the negative triboelectric material. This behavior is explained in terms of the dependence of N-graphene quantum capacitance on the electrode chemical potential which shifts according to the opposite polarization induced at the two electrodes upon triboelectrification.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have proved their potential for delivering high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) alongside low fabrication cost and high versatility. The stability and the PCE of PSCs can readily be improved by implementing engineering approaches that entail the incorporation of two-dimensional (2D) materials across the device's layered configuration. In this work, two-dimensional (2D) 6R-TaS2 flakes were exfoliated and incorporated as a buffer layer in inverted PSCs, enhancing the device's PCE, lifetime and thermal stability. A thin buffer layer of 6R-TaS2 flakes was formed on top of the electron transport layer to facilitate electron extraction, thus improving the overall device performance. The optimized devices reach a PCE of 18.45%, representing a 12% improvement compared to the reference cell. The lifetime stability measurements of the devices under ISOS-L2, ISOS-D1, ISOS-D1I and ISOS-D2I protocols revealed that the TaS2 buffer layer retards the intrinsic, thermally activated degradation processes of the PSCs. Notably, the devices retain more than the 80% of their initial PCE over 330 h under continuous 1 Sun illumination at 65 °C.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal monochalcogenides have been recently predicted to be potential photo(electro)catalysts for water splitting and photoelectrochemical (PEC) reactions. Differently from the most established InSe, GaSe, GeSe, and many other monochalcogenides, bulk GaS has a large band gap of ∼2.5 eV, which increases up to more than 3.0 eV with decreasing its thickness due to quantum confinement effects. Therefore, 2D GaS fills the void between 2D small-band-gap semiconductors and insulators, resulting of interest for the realization of van der Waals type-I heterojunctions in photocatalysis, as well as the development of UV light-emitting diodes, quantum wells, and other optoelectronic devices. Based on theoretical calculations of the electronic structure of GaS as a function of layer number reported in the literature, we experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, the PEC properties of liquid-phase exfoliated GaS nanoflakes. Our results indicate that solution-processed 2D GaS-based PEC-type photodetectors outperform the corresponding solid-state photodetectors. In fact, the 2D morphology of the GaS flakes intrinsically minimizes the distance between the photogenerated charges and the surface area at which the redox reactions occur, limiting electron–hole recombination losses. The latter are instead deleterious for standard solid-state configurations. Consequently, PEC-type 2D GaS photodetectors display a relevant UV-selective photoresponse. In particular, they attain responsivities of 1.8 mA W–1in 1 M H2SO4[at 0.8 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)], 4.6 mA W–1in 1 M Na2SO4(at 0.9 V vs RHE), and 6.8 mA W–1in 1 M KOH (at 1.1. V vs RHE) under 275 nm illumination wavelength with an intensity of 1.3 mW cm–2. Beyond the photodetector application, 2D GaS-based PEC-type devices may find application in tandem solar PEC cells in combination with other visible-sensitive low-band-gap materials, including transition-metal monochalcogenides recently established for PEC solar energy conversion applications.

This experimental work aims at evaluating the mechanical and failure behavior of adhesive-bonded single-lap joints made of a thermoplastic composite 3D-printed via Fused Filament Fabrication technology. Carbon fiber was selected as the reinforcement and used in the form of both short and continuous fibers embedded in the Nylon-6 matrix, forming the composite's hybrid structure. An approach based on progressive improvement of surface treatment effectiveness (solvent degreasing, abrasion, and low-pressure plasma) has been adopted to verify how the additively-manufactured composite responds to bonding when increased interfacial adhesion is attained by preparing the outer printed layer. Roughness measurements, wettability evaluations, and XPS analyses have been carried out to assess any modifications of morphology and functionalization exhibited by the different surfaces after treatment. The experimental findings demonstrate that the intrinsic non-homogeneity of 3D-printed composites is emphasized when low-pressure plasma is used, as it generates interfacial bonds between adhesive and adherend that are more effective than the interlaminar ones within the substrate. In this condition, the ultimate resistance of the joint corresponds to that of the base material. In particular, fracture-mechanism analysis allowed precise identification of the crack path, highlighting defects and current limitations of the additively-manufactured system and suggesting pivotal aspects to develop in future work to improve joint performance.

The subscript 40 indicates the number of PbI6 octahedra separated by a double layer of PEA cations. Such quasi-2D perovskites exhibit efficient photovoltaic performances and higher stability with respect to the pure 3D counterpart (MAPbI3 ). The high processing cost, poor mechanical properties and moderate performance of BiTe–based alloys used in thermoelectric devices limit the cost-effectiveness of this energy conversion technology. Towards solving these current challenges, in the present work, we detail a low temperature solution-based approach to produce BiTe-CuTe nanocomposites with improved thermoelectric performance. Our approach consists in combining proper ratios of colloidal nanoparticles and to consolidate the resulting mixture into nanocomposites using a hot press. The transport properties of the nanocomposites are characterized and compared with those of pure BiTe nanomaterials obtained following the same procedure. In contrast with most previous works, the presence of CuTe nanodomains does not result in a significant reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity of the reference BiTe nanomaterial, which is already very low. However, the introduction of CuTe yields a nearly threefold increase of the power factor associated to a simultaneous increase of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity at temperatures above 400 K. Taking into account the band alignment of the two materials, we rationalize this increase by considering that CuTe nanostructures, with a relatively low electron affinity, are able to inject electrons into BiTe, enhancing in this way its electrical conductivity. The simultaneous increase of the Seebeck coefficient is related to the energy filtering of charge carriers at energy barriers within BiTe domains associated with the accumulation of electrons in regions nearby a CuTe/BiTe heterojunction. Overall, with the incorporation of a proper amount of CuTe nanoparticles, we demonstrate a 250% improvement of the thermoelectric figure of merit of BiTe, This work was supported by the European Regional Development Funds and by the Generalitat de Catalunya through the project 2017SGR1246. Molybdenum sulfide emerged as promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst thanks to its high intrinsic activity, however its limited active sites exposure and low conductivity hamper its performance. To address these drawbacks, the non-equilibrium nature of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is exploited to synthesize self-supported hierarchical nanoarchitectures by gas phase nucleation and sequential attachment of defective molybdenum sulfide clusters. The physics of the process are studied by in situ diagnostics and correlated to the properties of the resulting electrocatalyst. The as-synthesized architectures have a disordered nanocrystalline structure, with nanodomains of bent, defective S-Mo-S layers embedded in an amorphous matrix, with excess sulfur and segregated molybdenum particles. Oxygen incorporation in this structure fosters the creation of amorphous oxide/oxysulfide nanophases with high electrical conductivity, enabling fast electron transfer to the active sites. The combined effect of the nanocrystalline pristine structure and the surface oxidation enhances the performance leading to small overpotentials, very fast kinetics (35.1 mV dec-1 Tafel slope) and remarkable long-term stability for continuous operation up to -1 A cm-2. This work shows possible new avenues in catalytic design arising from a non-equilibrium technique as PLD and the importance of structural and chemical control to improve the HER performance of MoS-based catalysts.

International audience; Macroscopic current-voltage measurements and nanoscopic ballistic electron emission spectroscopy (BEES) have been used to probe the Schottky barrier height (SBH) at metal/Ge(100) junctions for two metal electrodes (Au and Pt) and different metallization methods, specifically, thermal-vapor and laser-vapor deposition. Analysis of macroscopic current-voltage characteristics indicates that a SBH of 0.61-0.63 eV controls rectification at room temperature. On the other hand, BEES measured at 80 K reveals the coexistence of two distinct barriers at the nanoscale, taking values in the ranges 0.61-0.64 and 0.70-0.74 eV for the cases studied. For each metal-semiconductor junction, the macroscopic measurement agrees well with the lower barrier found with BEES. Ab initio modeling of BEES spectra ascribes the two barriers to two different atomic registries between the metals and the Ge(100) surface, a significant relevant insight for next-generation highly miniaturized Ge-based devices.

"Charge engineering" of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) through so-called electronic impurity doping is a long-standing challenge in colloidal chemistry and holds promise for ground-breaking advancements in many optoelectronic, photonic, and spin-based nanotechnologies. To date, our knowledge is limited to a few paradigmatic studies on a small number of model compounds and doping conditions, with important electronic dopants still unexplored in nanoscale systems. Equally importantly, fine-tuning of charge engineered NCs is hampered by the statistical limitations of traditional approaches. The resulting intrinsic doping inhomogeneity restricts fundamental studies to statistically averaged behaviors and complicates the realization of advanced device concepts based on their advantageous functionalities. Here we aim to address these issues by realizing the first example of II-VI NCs electronically doped with an exact number of heterovalent gold atoms, a known p-type acceptor impurity in bulk chalcogenides. Single-dopant accuracy across entire NC ensembles is obtained through a novel non-injection synthesis employing ligand-exchanged gold clusters as "quantized" dopant sources to seed the nucleation of CdSe NCs in organic media. Structural, spectroscopic, and magneto-optical investigations trace a comprehensive picture of the physical processes resulting from the exact doping level of the NCs. Gold atoms, doped here for the first time into II-VI NCs, are found to incorporate as nonmagnetic Au + species activating intense size-tunable intragap photoluminescence and artificially offsetting the hole occupancy of valence band states. Fundamentally, the transient conversion of Au + to paramagnetic Au 2+ (5d 9 configuration) under optical excitation results in strong photoinduced magnetism and diluted magnetic semiconductor behavior revealing the contribution of individual paramagnetic impurities to the macroscopic magnetism of the NCs. Altogether, our results demonstrate a new chemical approach toward NCs with physical functionalities tailored to the single impurity level and offer a versatile platform for future investigations and device exploitation of individual and collective impurity processes in quantum confined structures.

We studied the hysteresis and electric field effects on planar CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite devices, synthetized from laser-ablated precursors, by means of electrical characterizations at different scan rates and optical measurements. The aim of our investigation is to characterize the phenomena behind perovskite degradation under prolonged applied electric field. Using a perovskite more resistant to electric field induced degradation, we run long time characterizations that were not accomplishable before. Thus, we distinguished all the degradation-involved phenomena. The results point to the presence of ions migrating in the perovskite when the device is biased. Our data showed that ion migration degrades the interfaces with the consequent creation of degradation layers that limit the current injected in the device and the extracted photocurrent. These layers where detected also by means of optical Raman characterization. In order to explain the details of the mechanisms concurring to the observed behaviors, we presented a qualitative model. The observed phenomena exacerbated by the planar structure are even more destructive on standard solution processed perovskites to which the results of this work can be extended. Since, the same degradation dynamics occur on vertical devices, typical on perovskite solar cells, this work provides a useful in-depth analysis of the ionic migration effects.

The surface ligands on colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) play an important role in the performance of NCs based optoelectronic devices such as photovoltaic cells, photodetectors and light emitting diodes (LEDs). On one hand, the NC emission depends critically on the passivation of the surface to minimize trap states that can provide non-radiative recombination channels. On the other hand, the electrical properties of NC films are dominated by the ligands that constitute the barriers for charge transport from one NC to its neighbor. Therefore, surface modifications via ligandexchange have been employed to improve the conductance of NC films. However, in light emitting devices, such surface modifications are more critical due to their possible detrimental effects on the emission properties. In this work, we study the role of surface ligand modifications on the optical and electrical properties of CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods (DiRs) in films, and investigate their performance in all-solution processed LEDs. The DiR films maintain high PLQY, around 40-50%, and their electroluminescence in the LED preserves the excellent color purity of the PL. In the LEDs, the ligand-exchange boosted the luminance, reaching a four-fold increase from 2200 cd/m2 for native surfactants to 8500 cd/m2 for the exchanged aminoethanethiol ligands. Moreover, the efficiency roll-off, operational stability, and shelf life are significantly improved, and the external quantum efficiency is modestly increased from 5.1 % to 5.4 %. We relate these improvements to the increased conductivity of the emissive layer, and to the better charge balance of the electrically injected carriers. Colloidal core/shell nanocrystals are key materials for optoelectronics, enabling control over essential properties via precise engineering of the shape, thickness, and crystal lattice structure of their shell. Here, we apply the growth protocol for CdS branched nanocrystals on CdSe nanoplatelet seeds and obtain bone-shaped heterostructures with a highly anisotropic shell. Surprisingly, the nanoplatelets withstand the high growth temperature of 350 {\deg}C and we obtain structures with a CdSe nanoplatelet core that is overcoated by a shell of cubic CdS, on top of which tetrahedral CdS structures with hexagonal lattice are formed. These complex core/shell nanocrystals show a bandedge emission around 657 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield of ca. 42 % in solution, which is also retained in thin films. Interestingly, the nanocrystals manifest simultaneous red and green emission, and the relatively long wavelength of the green emission indicates charge recombination at the cubic/hexagonal interface of the CdS shell. The nanocrystal films show amplified spontaneous emission, random lasing, and distributed feedback lasing when the material is deposited on suitable gratings. Owing to the self-renewing reactive oxygen species scavenger capability of cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria), we tested in vivo radioprotective effects on stem cells and tissue regeneration using low-dose irradiated planarians as model system. We treated planarians with nanoceria or gum Arabic, as control, and we analyzed the expression of stem cell molecular markers and tissue regeneration capability, as well as cell death and DNA damage in non-irradiated and in low-dose irradiated animals. Our findings show that nanoceria increase the number of stem cells and tissue regenerative capability, and reduce cell death and DNA damage after low-dose irradiation, suggesting a protective role on stem cells.

The design of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key for molecular hydrogen (H2) production from electrochemical water splitting. Transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2), most notably group-6 MX2 (e.g., MoS2 and WS2), are appealing catalysts for the HER alternative to the best, but highly expensive, Pt-group elements. However, their HER activity is typically restricted to their edge sites rather than their basal plane. Furthermore, their semiconducting properties hinder an efficient electron transfer to the catalytic sites, which impedes a high rate of H2 production. Herein, we exploit liquid-phase exfoliation-produced metallic (1H, 2H and 3R) NbS2 nanoflakes, belonging to the class of metallic layered group-5 MX2, to overcome the abovementioned limitations. Both chemical treatment with hygroscopic Li salt and electrochemical in operando self-nanostructuring are exploited to improve the NbS2 nanoflake HER activity. The combination of NbS2 with other MX2, in our case MoSe2, also provides heterogeneous catalysts accelerating the HER kinetics of the individual counterparts. The designed NbS2-based catalysts exhibit an overpotential at a cathodic current of 10 mA cm-2 (n10) as low as 0.10 and 0.22 V vs. RHE in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH, respectively. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the HER activity of the NbS2-based catalysts is also superior to those of the Pt/C benchmark at current densities higher than 80 mA cm-2. Our work provides general guidelines for a scalable and cost-effective exploitation of NbS2, as well as the entire MX2 portfolio, for attaining a viable H2 production through electrochemical routes.

Using wet chemistry synthesis methods we prepared nanodumbbell structures as a model oxide supported metal catalyst. In this peculiar configuration, a single metallic domain (M) is connected to a single metal oxide (MOx) one. The size, composition and morphology of each domain can be carefully controlled, allowing us to investigate the effects resulting from a hollow morphology of the MOx domains, while all other material’s properties were kept constant. We chose the CO oxidation as a model oxidation reaction and increasing the population of nanocrystals (NCs) with hollow oxide domains resulted in a decrease in catalytic activity. Despite the manipulation of oxide morphology affected the surface charge of the Au domain, the bulk oxide reducibility and the crystallinity of the nanosized oxide support, the rate limiting step of CO oxidation was not affected. The same apparent activation energy was indeed measured independently from the population of NCs with hollow oxide domains. The difference in catalytic performance was thus ascribed to a different number of interfacial active sites when the morphology evolved from full to hollow.

A novel WS2–graphite dual-ion battery (DIB) is developed by combining a conventional graphite cathode and a high-capacity few-layer WS2-flake anode. The WS2 flakes are produced by exploiting wet-jet milling (WJM) exfoliation, which allows large-scale and free-material loss production (i.e., volume up to 8 L h−1 at concentration of 10 g L−1 and exfoliation yield of 100%) of few-layer WS2 flakes in dispersion. The WS2 anodes enable DIBs, based on hexafluorophosphate (PF6–) and lithium (Li+) ions, to achieve charge-specific capacities of 457, 438, 421, 403, 295, and 169 mAh g–1 at current rates of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.0 A g–1, respectively, outperforming conventional DIBs. The WS2-based DIBs operate in the 0 to 4 V cell voltage range, thus extending the operating voltage window of conventional WS2-based Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Silica-supported pyrolyzed lignin (pLG@silica) was investigated as a solid sorbent for the pre-concentration of rare earth elements (REE) from natural waters followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. The carbon-based material was easily prepared by pyrolytic treatment of lignin at 600 °C after its adsorption onto silica micro-particles. pLG@silica was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface area measurements (BET method), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), point of zero charge measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The as-prepared material (50 mg) was tested as fixed-bed sorbent for the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of tap, river, and sea water samples spiked with REE in the 10–150 ng L−1 range, followed by ICP-MS analysis. A quantitative adsorption was observed for all REE with recoveries in the range of 72–118%. A suitable inter-day precision (RSDs 5–12%, n = 3) was obtained. Sample volumes up to 250 mL provided enrichment factors up to 100. The method detection and quantification limits (MDLs and MQLs) were in the range of 0.4–0.6 ng L−1 and 1–2 ng L−1, respectively. The batch-to-batch reproducibility was verified on four pLG@silica independent preparations. As remarkable advantages, pLG@silica proved to be of easy preparation using a waste material, inexpensive, and reusable for at least 20 SPE cycles.

[Image: see text] Current colloidal synthesis methods for CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) routinely yield samples that emit, in discrete steps, from 460 to 550 nm. A significant challenge lies with obtaining thicker NPLs, to further widen the emission range. This is at present typically achieved via colloidal atomic layer deposition onto CdSe cores, or by synthesizing NPL core/shell structures. Here, we demonstrate a novel reaction scheme, where we start from 4.5 monolayer (ML) NPLs and increase the thickness in a two-step reaction that switches from 2D to 3D growth. The key feature is the enhancement of the growth rate of basal facets by the addition of CdCl(2), resulting in a series of nearly monodisperse CdSe NPLs with thicknesses between 5.5 and 8.5 ML. Optical characterization yielded emission peaks from 554 nm up to 625 nm with a line width (fwhm) of 9–13 nm, making them one of the narrowest colloidal nanocrystal emitters currently available in this spectral range. The NPLs maintained a short emission lifetime of 5–11 ns. Finally, due to the increased red shift of the NPL band edge photoluminescence excitation spectra revealed several high-energy peaks. Calculation of the NPL band structure allowed us to identify these excited-state transitions, and spectral shifts are consistent with a significant mixing of light and split-off hole states. Clearly, chloride ions can add a new degree of freedom to the growth of 2D colloidal nanocrystals, yielding new insights into both the NPL synthesis as well as their optoelectronic properties.

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CP-Kp) is one of the most important opportunistic pathogens strongly associated with nosocomial infections. The capsule of CP-Kp not only contributes to its pathogenic potential but also ensures survival for bacteria in different environments and surfaces. Development of novel reactive nanomaterials can help to inhibit the survival of such microorganism and thereby their spreading in the hospital environment. In this work, the photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of PF-co-doped anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were studied in details and related to the evolution of their structure and surface composition upon hydrothermal treatment at 250 °C for periods up to 12 h. Structural and morphological evolution were followed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy while the surface composition was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements were carried out to reveal the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Both OH and O2 − radicals as well as 1O2 were confirmed and quantitatively compared in different photoirradiated PF-TiO2 NPs dispersions. It was found that hydrothermal treatment increased the photocatalytic and antibacterial activity while PF-co-doping promoted the formation of OH radicals. By the application of PF-co-doping, the elevated level of OH led to rapid inactivation of CP-Kp.

Osteosarcoma is an aggressive form of bone cancer mostly affecting young people. To date, the most effective strategy for the treatment of osteosarcoma is the surgical removal of the tumor with or without combinational chemotherapy. In this study, we present the development of a pH-sensitive drug-delivery system in the form of microparticles, with increased chemotherapeutic action against the osteosarcoma cell line SAOS-2, and with reduced toxicity against the heart myoblastic cell line H9C2. The delivery system is composed of calcium carbonate and collagen type I, and is loaded with cerium dioxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (3-based therapeutic modulators (C-TherMods)), which corresponds to 6.4 μg/mL of encapsulated doxorubicin, can protect the H9C2 cells even after 120 h, since the percentage of viable cells at this time point is 65%. On the contrary, when H9C2 cells are treated with 0.5 μg/mL of free doxorubicin, 75% of the cells are dead only after 24 h. When SAOS-2 cells are treated with the same concentration of C-TherMods (250 μg/mL), the viability of SAOS-2 cells is 80% after 24 h, while it reduces to 50% after 120 h. At pH 6.0, the synergic effect of the pro-oxidant CeO2 nanoparticles and of the encapsulated doxorubicin leads to almost 100% of cell death, even at the lowest concentration of C-TherMods (50 μg/mL).

PbS nanocrystals are an important narrow-gap material for solar cells and photodetectors. Nevertheless, their application may be limited because device performance can be affected by atmospheric conditions. Indeed, the presence of oxygen and/or water can degrade the active layers, possibly leading to device failure. Strategies to address this issue are therefore actively explored. Here we report a solution-processed PbS quantum dot solar cell, consisting of a PbS-silane functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PbS-rGO) layer on top of the PbS absorber film, which enhances device stability, especially when the solar cells are exposed to moisture. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) measurements demonstrate a slower degradation under continuous illumination for solar cells with PbS-rGO. When storing the samples under saturated water vapor, differences are even more remarkable: with PbS-rGO the solar cells essentially maintain their initial PCE, while the PCE of the PbS reference devices is reduced by 50% after 5 days. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal the damage to the PbS films and the formation of PbSOx crystals in the PbS reference devices. Such crystals are not observed in the PbS-rGO devices, further supporting the importance of the PbS-rGO barrier layer.

Metal clusters with appropriate molecular ligands have been shown to be suitable subnanometer building blocks for supramolecular architectures with controlled secondary interactions, providing access to physical regimes not achievable with conventional intermolecular motifs. An example is the excimer photophysics exhibited by individual cluster-based superstructures produced by top-down etching of gold nanoparticles. Now, a supramolecular architecture of copper clusters is presented with controlled optical properties and efficient non-resonant luminescence produced via a novel bottom-up synthesis using mild green reductants followed by a ligand exchange reaction and spontaneous supramolecular assembly. Spectroscopic experiments confirm the formation of the intercluster network and reveal the permanent nature of their excimer-like behavior, thus extending the potential impact and applicability of metal cluster superstructures as efficient and stable non-resonant single-particle emitters.

We prepared 20–30 nm hollow CeO2 nanoparticles with 6–9-nm-thick porous shells by performing an easy, cost-effective, and water-based galvanic replacement on SiO2-supported Mn3O4 nanoparticles with Ce3+. The low-density, defected structure doped with residual Mn and the easily reducible surface makes the catalysts highly reactive for both CO oxidation and soot combustion reactions.

We propose here a new colloidal approach for the synthesis of both all-inorganic and hybrid organic–inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). The main limitation of the protocols that are currently in use, such as the hot injection and the ligand-assisted reprecipitation routes, is that they employ PbX2 (X = Cl, Br, or I) salts as both lead and halide precursors. This imposes restrictions on being able to precisely tune the amount of reaction species and, consequently, on being able to regulate the composition of the final NCs. In order to overcome this issue, we show here that benzoyl halides can be efficiently used as halide sources to be injected in a solution of metal cations (mainly in the form of metal carboxylates) for the synthesis of APbX3 NCs (in which A = Cs+, CH3NH3+, or CH(NH2)2+). In this way, it is possible to independently tune the amount of both cations and halide precursors in the synthesis. The APbX3 NCs that were prepared with our protocol show excellent optical properties, such as high photoluminescence quantum yields, low amplified spontaneous emission thresholds, and enhanced stability in air. It is noteworthy that CsPbI3 NCs, which crystallize in the cubic α phase, are stable in air for weeks without any postsynthesis treatment. The improved properties of our CsPbX3 perovskite NCs can be ascribed to the formation of lead halide terminated surfaces, in which Cs cations are replaced by alkylammonium ions.

Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) have proven to be very efficient in building up omniphobic surfaces because of the peculiar properties of fluorine atoms. However, due to their environmental impact and bioaccumulative potential, perfluorinated surfactants with chains longer than six carbon atoms have been banned, and other alternatives had to be found. Herein, we demonstrate the possibility to build omniphobic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) using a multibranched fluorinated thiol (BRFT) bearing ultrashort fluorinated alkyl groups, surrounding a hydrocarbon polar core. This unique design allows us to multiply the number of fluorine atoms in the molecule (27 F atoms per molecule), affording a high fluorine density on the surface and a low surface free energy. Moreover, the presence of four ether bonds in the core may hasten molecular degradation in the environment because of the cleavage of such bonds in physiological conditions, thus overcoming bioaccumulation issues. Perovskite-related Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals present a “zero-dimensional” crystalline structure where adjacent [PbBr6]4– octahedra do not share any corners. We show in this work that these nanocrystals can be converted into “three-dimensional” CsPbBr3 perovskites by extraction of CsBr. This conversion drastically changes the optoelectronic properties of the nanocrystals that become highly photoluminescent. The extraction of CsBr can be achieved either by thermal annealing (physical approach) or by chemical reaction with Prussian Blue (chemical approach). The former approach can be simply carried out on a dried film without addition of any chemicals but does not yield a full transformation. Instead, reaction with Prussian Blue in solution achieves a full transformation into the perovskite phase. This transformation was also verified on the iodide counterpart (Cs4PbI6).

Nickel and cobalt-based chalcogenides are an interesting class of electrochemically active compounds. Herein we report a two-step synthesis of uniform hollow nickel cobalt perselenide nanostructured microparticles with a corrugated surface, randomly spaced pores, and a tunable composition. In the first step, we synthesized Ni–Co acetate hydroxide prism-shaped microparticles, which were subsequently used as templates for the selenization process at temperatures as low as 80 °C. The substitution of acetate and hydroxide anions with selenide anions at a low temperature eventually produced partially amorphous hollow microparticles due to the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. Thin films of the as-synthesized samples behaved as highly active catalysts for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We discuss the photoluminescence (PL) of quantum-confined CsPbBr3 colloidal nanocrystals of two different shapes (nanowires and nanoplatelets) at different concentrations in solution and in solid-state films. Upon increasing the nanocrystal concentration in solution, a constant drop in photoluminescence quantum yield is observed, accompanied by a significant PL red shift. This effect is reversible, and the original PL can be restored by diluting to the original concentration. We show that this effect can be in part attributed to self-absorption and partly to aggregation. In particular, for nanoplatelets, where the aggregation is mostly irreversible, while the self-absorption effect is reversible, the two contributions can be well separated. Finally, when dry solid-state films are prepared, the emission band is shifted into the green spectral region, close to the bulk CsPbBr3 band gap, thus preventing blue emission from such films.

CsPbBr3 nanocrystals passivated with short molecular ligands and deposited on a substrate were annealed from room temperature to 400 °C in inert atmosphere. Chemical, structural, and morphological transformations were monitored in situ and ex situ by different techniques, while optoelectronic properties of the film were also assessed. Annealing at 100 °C resulted in a 1 order of magnitude increase in photocurrent and photoresponse as a result of partial sintering of the NCs and residual solvent evaporation. Beyond 150 °C the original orthorhombic NCs were partially transformed into tetragonal CsPb2Br5 crystals, due to the desorption of weakly bound propionic acid ligands. The photocurrent increased moderately until 300 °C although the photoresponse became slower as a result of the formation of surface trap states. Eventually, annealing beyond 350 °C removed the strongly bound butylamine ligands and reversed the transition to the original orthorhombic phase, with a loss of photocurrent due to the numerous defects induced by the stripping of the passivating butylamine.

Silver benzeneselenolate [AgSePh]∞ is a coordination polymer that hosts a hybrid quantum well structure. The recent advancements in the study of its tightly bound excitons (∼300 meV) and photoconductive properties (recently employed in UV photodetection) make it an interesting representative of a material platform that is an environmentally stable alternative to 2D metal halide perovskites in terms of optoelectronic properties. To this aim, several challenges are to be addressed, among which is the lack of control over the metal-organic reaction process in the reported synthesis of the [AgSePh]∞ nanocrystal film (NC). This issue contributed to cast doubts over the origin of its intrabandgap electronic states. In this article we study all the steps to obtain phase pure [AgSePh]∞ NC films, from thin silver films deposition through its oxidation followed by a chemical vapor-solid reaction with benzeneselenol, by means of UV-vis, XRD, SEM, and AFM. Raman and FTIR spectroscopies are also employed to provide vibrational peaks assignment for the first time on this polymer. Our analysis supports an acid-base reaction scheme based on an acid attacking the metal oxide precursor, generating water as a byproduct of the polymeric synthesis, speeding up the reaction by solvating the PhSeH. The reaction readily goes to completion within 30 min in a supersaturated PhSeH/N2 atmosphere at 90 °C. Our analysis suggests the absence of the precursor's leftovers or oxidized species that could contribute to the intragap states. By tuning the reaction parameters, we gained control of film morphology to obtain substrate-parallel oriented microcrystals showing different excitonic absorption intensities. Finally, centimeter-size high-quality [AgSePh]∞ NC films could be obtained, enabling exploitation of their optoelectronic properties, such as UV photodetection, in large-area applications.

Coupling of keratin with titanium surfaces is here realized both through thick coatings and molecular functionalization. This coupling has the final aim both of chemical and mechanical protection of the titanium surfaces and of improving interaction of titanium implants with soft tissues in transmucosal and percutaneous implants. Wool-derived keratin has been used and plasma decontamination/activation has been tested as possible strategy for the improvement of keratin grafting ability and adhesion. Coated/functionalized surfaces have been characterized by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), contact angle measurements X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), zeta potential and adhesion (tape and scratch) tests. These analyses evidenced that keratin was successfully coupled to titanium surfaces both in the form of molecular grafting and thick coating. In both cases, plasma surface activation improves keratin wetting and bonding ability for the substrates. The obtained coatings showed good adhesion and mechanical stability.

The nanoengineering of the structure of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is widely pursued to develop viable catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) alternative to the precious metallic ones. Metallic group-5 TMDs have been demonstrated to be effective catalysts for the HER in acidic media, making affordable real proton exchange membrane water electrolysers. Their key-plus relies on the fact that both their basal planes and edges are catalytically active for the HER. In this work, the 6R phase of TaS2 is "rediscovered" and engineered. A liquid-phase microwave treatment is used to modify the structural properties of the 6R-TaS2 nanoflakes produced by liquid-phase exfoliation. The fragmentation of the nanoflakes and their evolution from monocrystalline to partly polycrystalline structures improve the HER-activity, lowering the overpotential at cathodic current of 10 mA cm(-2) from 0.377 to 0.119 V. Furthermore, 6R-TaS2 nanoflakes act as ideal support to firmly trap Pt species, which achieve a mass activity (MA) up 10 000 A g(Pt)(-1) at overpotential of 50 mV (20 000 A g(Pt)(-1) at overpotentials of 72 mV), representing a 20-fold increase of the MA of Pt measured for the Pt/C reference, and approaching the state-of-the-art of the Pt mass activity.
