International audience; In the subalpine forest ecosystems of the French Alps, European larch trees (Larix decidua Mill.) are periodically affected by outbreaks of a defoliating insect, the larch budmoth (Zeiraphera griseana (Hubner, 1799); LBM). To assess the long-term dynamics of LBM populations, we propose a spatiotemporal analysis of a long outbreak chronology reconstruction for the entire French Alps covering the period 1414-2009. This chronology was obtained by analyzing tree ring width (TRW) chronologies collected from 44 larch populations. The evidence of a latitudinal gradient in LBM is an original result that we have related to the "travelling waves" and "epicenter" theory. Wavelet analyses revealed a strong explicit continuous signal for periodicities of 4, 8, and 16 years throughout the entire 1500-2003 time series, except for a loss of power from 1690 to 1790 and since the early 1980s. We hypothesize that these abrupt changes could reflect a physiological response of LBM to past climatic variations. The spatial and temporal variability of LBM outbreaks and the propagation phenomenon in the French Alps highlighted by this study raises questions regarding its future dynamics in response to the expected climate change.; Dans les écosystèmes forestiers subalpins des Alpes françaises, le mélèze (Larix decidua Mill.) subit périodiquement les épidémies d’un insecte défoliateur, la tordeuse du mélèze (Zeiraphera griseana (Hübner, 1799); LBM). Afin de mieux comprendre les dynamiques à long terme des populations de tordeuse, nous proposons dans cet article une analyse spatio-temporelle d’une très longue reconstruction des épidémies pour la période 1414–2009 sur l’ensemble des Alpes françaises. Cette chronologie a pu être reconstruite à partir des cernes de croissance de 44 populations de mélèze. Les résultats ont permis de mettre en évidence le rôle d’un gradient latitudinal que nous avons attribué au phénomène théorique des « épicentres » et « vagues de dissémination ». D’autre part, les analyses temporelles, réalisées à l’aide de la méthode des ondelettes, ont révélé l’existence d’un fort signal continu pour des fréquences périodiques de 4, 8 et 16 ans sur l’ensemble de la chronologie à l’exception d’une perte d’énergie entre 1690 et 1790 et depuis le début des années 1980. Ces changements pourraient refléter une réponse physiologique de la tordeuse à des variations climatiques passées. La variabilité temporelle et spatiale des épidémies de tordeuse ainsi que le mode de propagation à travers les Alpes françaises nous ont conduits à nous interroger sur les dynamiques futures de l’insecte et de son hôte en réponse au réchauffement climatique rapide dans les écosystèmes de haute élévation.

Landscape heterogeneity shapes species distributions, interactions, and fluctuations. Historically, in dry forest ecosystems, low canopy cover and heterogeneous fuel patterns often moderated disturbances like fire. Over the last century, however, increases in canopy cover and more homogeneous patterns have contributed to altered fire regimes with higher fire severity. Fire management strategies emphasize increasing within-stand heterogeneity with aggregated fuel patterns to alter potential fire behavior. Yet, little is known about how such patterns may affect fire behavior, or how sensitive fire behavior changes from fuel patterns are to winds and canopy cover. Here, we used a physics-based fire behavior model, FIRETEC, to explore the impacts of spatially aggregated fuel patterns on the mean and variability of stand-level fire behavior, and to test sensitivity of these effects to wind and canopy cover. Qualitative and quantitative approaches suggest that spatial fuel patterns can significantly affect fire behavior. Based on our results we propose three hypotheses: (1) aggregated spatial fuel patterns primarily affect fire behavior by increasing variability; (2) this variability should increase with spatial scale of aggregation; and (3) fire behavior sensitivity to spatial pattern effects should be more pronounced under moderate wind and fuel conditions.

International audience; 1. Evolution of nutrient acquisition by plants should depend on two forces: local competition is based on the capacity to exploit the local nutrient resource, and regional competition is based on the capacity to occupy the whole landscape through seed production and dispersal. 2. We build a spatially-explicit simulation model where a limiting nutrient is recycled in each local patch of a lattice by individual plants. The model includes both local and regional competition. 3. Heterogeneity in nutrient availability and dispersal limitation mitigate the effect of competition for the local nutrient resource and allow the evolution of lower rates of nutrient uptake. Our spatially explicit model suggests that evolution in richer ecosystems selects “expensive” strategies (high acquisition, low conservation of resources) compared to poor ecosystems. 4. Low rates of nutrient acquisition can be considered as a form of altruism because they leave more resource available for other individuals. Our model thus suggests that the influence of spatial processes on the evolution of altruism is pervasive and is linked to key aspects of ecosystem functioning. 5. Because our model both includes regional and local competition, evolution does not minimize the availability of mineral nutrient, though evolution or species replacement is often thought to minimize the availability of nutrient. Taken together, our work confirms that the interplay between local and regional competition is critical for the evolution of plant nutrient strategies and its effect on ecosystem properties.

Highlights:• Many forests have an heterogeneous structure not accounted for in models.• We developed NOTG, a 3D, individual-based model of carbon and water budgets.• The model was parameterized for a mixed Mediterranean forest.• 3D simulation was more consistent with observations than 1D simulation.• Results show the importance of above- and below-ground spatial structures.Abstract:Many natural terrestrial ecosystems, agroforestry systems, and, increasingly, forest plantations, are made of a mixture of species and display significant structural heterogeneity. Yet most carbon-based biophysical models are limited to homogeneous, monospecific canopies. We explored whether the spatial structure at the Font-Blanche experimental site, located in a mixed Mediterranean forest of Aleppo pine and holm oak in south-east France, could affect the components of the carbon and water cycles. We used NOTG, a new 3D, process-based, and individual-based model specifically developed to study the importance of the spatial structure on the carbon and water cycles of complex ecosystems. It incorporates processes involved in the energy, carbon, and water cycles at the tree (radiation interception, photosynthesis, phenology, allocation, senescence, transpiration), and soil (soil moisture, soil organic matter decomposition) levels. It is designed to handle various plant phenological types (deciduous, non opportunistic evergreen, and opportunistic evergreen), and a comprehensive description of plant C pools. The model is designed to study water and carbon fluxes at the stand scale over one to a few years. In this study, NOTG was parameterized for the Font-Blanche forest and two five-year simulations were made using either the full 3D representation, or a simplified 1D representation. Comparison of model outputs against observations at the tree, soil, and ecosystem scales, showed a much better accuracy when using the 3D representation. This illustrates the dependence of plant and ecosystem function to the above- and below-ground spatial structures, and the usefulness of such detailed models when dealing with structurally complex ecosystems.

Chapitre 2; All around the Mediterranean, forest systems have been shaped by long-term anthropogenic impacts. Today, they provide multiple goods and services. We show how the social-ecological system approach offers a good framework to understand their biodiversity, functioning and dynamics. Mediterranean forests have a huge biodiversity, not only in terms of the number of species but also in terms of within-species genetic diversity (at least tree species). We present a tentative typology of Mediterranean forests regarding this biodiversity. Then, we explain how the dynamics of Mediterranean forests is driven in particular by a combination of three characteristics: specific environmental constraints (mainly summer water deficit), a marked spatial heterogeneity of the environment at all scales, disturbance regime (e.g. fire, droughts, pest attacks, human pressure) of variable intensity and frequency. The future challenges for the Mediterranean forests will be to respond simultaneously to: (i) increased threats related to climate change and human pressure, (ii) new demand for multiple ecosystem services locally, (iii) emerging interest for Mediterranean resources to support adaptive strategies in other regions.

International audience; In the perspective of the conversion of Norway spruce plantations, there is a need for foresters to assess the potential of the natural woody species regeneration. We studied 50 Norway spruce plantations on alluvial soils throughout the Grand-duché de Luxembourg and compared the regeneration characteristics (species composition, spatial heterogeneity) with 42 riverine deciduous stands (the target communities). Within the Norway spruce plantations, Fraxinus excelsior and Acer pseudoplatanus were the main regenerating species, probably because of their very good dispersal abilities. Norway spruce seedlings were quasi-absent. Low Norway spruce densities and base-rich soils (local factors) as well as proximity of riverine deciduous forests (regional factor) strongly favoured the regeneration of a suite of broad-leaved species. The thickness of Norway spruce litter did not appear to be a limiting factor, at least for large-seeded tree seedlings. The spatial heterogeneity of the woody regeneration was rather similar in coniferous and deciduous stands. We conclude that for the development of multifunctional forests, the spontaneous regeneration under low-dense Norway spruce stands on base-rich soils provides a valuable starting point.; Évaluation des potentialités de régénération naturelle pour la conversion des plantations d'épicéas sur sols alluviaux. Dans une perspective de conversion des plantations d'épicéas, les forestiers ont besoin d'évaluer les potentialités de régénération naturelle. Nous avons étudié 50 plantations d'épicéas sur sols alluviaux au grand-duché de Luxembourg et comparé les caractéristiques de cette régénération naturelle (composition, hétérogénéité spatiale) à 42 forêts riveraines de feuillus (communautés de référence). Dans les plantations d'épicéas, Fraxinus excelsior et Acer pseudoplatanus sont les principales espèces qui régénèrent, probablement en raison de leur grande capacité de dispersion. Les jeunes épicéas sont quasiment absents. La régénération des essences feuillues est fortement favorisée par de faibles densités d'épicéas, par des sols riches en bases (facteurs locaux) et par la proximité de forêts alluviales (facteur régional). La litière de l'épicéa ne semble pas être un facteur limitant à la régénération, au moins pour les essences à grosses graines. L'hétérogénéité spatiale de la régénération est très similaire dans les peuplements de feuillus ou d'épicéas. En conclusion, la régénération spontanée d'essences feuillues sous les plantations d'épicéas peu denses et établies sur des sols basiques est un point de départ très intéressant dans un processus de conversion de ces plantations vers des forêts multifonctionelles.

International audience; In this study we analyzed heterogeneity in nutrient cycling induced by trees in Mediterranean annual grasslands, comparing years of higher and lower than average precipitation and analyzing the effects of two different solar radiation scenarios. * Organic matter and consequently upper soil N, K, Ca and Mg were significantly greater in those locations receiving the highest levels of solar radiation, and as expected from many other studies in the literature, there was an increase in all macronutrients (except P) as well as pH below the canopy. * Contrary to what was expected, plant nutrient concentrations did not directly reflect those found in the soil, with the exception of K. The studied grassland responded to increased nutrient availability by enhancing growth and changing botanical composition rather than by increasing plant nutrient concentrations. Hence, the total amount of accumulated nutrients in the ecosystem was larger below the tree than outside it, although this is mainly a consequence of plant growth enhancement. The levels of Ca, Mg, and Na in plants decreased during the driest year, and the N content was mostly determined by the composition of the grass. * Temporal nutrient variability, particularly within-years, explained most of the variability in plant nutrient concentration, while spatial variability induced by trees was determined to be of secondary importance. These results are significant for ecosystem nutrient modelling.; Dans cette étude, nous avons analysé l'hétérogénéité du cycle des nutriments induite par les arbres dans les prairies méditerranéennes annuelles, en comparant les années à précipitations supérieures et inférieures à la moyenne et en analysant les effets de deux scénarios de rayonnements solaires différents. * La matière organique et par conséquent N, K, Ca et Mg des horizons supérieurs du sol étaient significativement plus élevés dans les stations recevant le plus de rayonnement solaire. Comme prévu à partir de nombreuses autres études dans la littérature, une augmentation de tous les macronutriments (sauf P) et aussi du pH a été observée sous la canopée des arbres. * Contrairement à ce qui était prévu, les concentrations de nutriments dans les végétaux n'ont pas reflété directement celles trouvées dans le sol, à l'exception de K. Les prairies étudiées ont répondu à un accroissement de la disponibilité en éléments nutritifs par une augmentation de la croissance et un changement de la composition botanique plutôt que par une augmentation des concentrations de nutriments dans les plantes. Par conséquent, les quantités totales de nutriments accumulées dans l'écosystème étaient plus importantes sous les arbres qu'en plein découvert, bien que cela soit principalement une conséquence de l'amélioration de la croissance des plantes. Les niveaux de Ca, Mg, et Na dans les plantes ont diminué au cours de l'année la plus sèche et la teneur en nutriments azotés était largement déterminée par la composition de l'herbe. * La variabilité temporelle intra-annuelle des éléments nutritifs expliquait la plus forte part de la variabilité de la concentration en nutriments des plantes annuelles, tandis que la variabilité spatiale induite par les arbres était d'importance secondaire. Ces résultats sont importants pour la modélisation des éléments nutritifs dans les écosystèmes.

We carried out a multi-taxa study to investigate the responses of species assemblages to stand and landscape variables in maritime pine plantation forests in the Landes de Gascogne (southwestern France). Breeding birds, carabid beetles, and ground-dwelling spiders were sampled simultaneously in a balanced set of 27 stands varying in tree species composition, age, and vertical structure. The composition and structure of surrounding landscapes were quantified within a 500-m radius around the stands. Species responses to a combination of 12 stand and landscape variables were estimated using multiple stepwise regression. Bird, carabid, and spider assemblages were related to the same explanatory variables using a set of co-inertia analyses. Tree height was the best predictive variable for all taxa at species richness, species assemblage, and individual species levels. Landscape variables were important as secondary factors, especially landscape fragmentation, spatial heterogeneity, and shape and spatial distribution of deciduous forest patches in the surrounding landscape. The occurrence of deciduous forest patches and an increasing landscape heterogeneity appeared to be beneficial to forest birds and spiders but not to carabids, probably because forest carabids are generally poor dispersers, more sensitive to habitat fragmentation, Nous avons réalisé une étude avec plusieurs taxa pour analyser la réponse d’assemblages d’espèces aux variables stationnelles et paysagères dans les forêts de plantations de pin maritime des Landes de Gascogne (sud-ouest de la France). Nous avons échantillonné simultanément les oiseaux nicheurs, les coléoptères carabiques et les araignées épigées dans un échantillon de 27 parcelles différant selon leur composition en espèces d’arbres, leur âge et leur structure verticale. La composition et la structure du paysage environnant ont été quantifiées dans un rayon de 500 m autour des parcelles. La réponse des espèces à une combinaison de 12 variables stationnelles et paysagères a été analysée par régression multiple pas à pas. La relation entre les assemblages d’oiseaux, de carabiques et d’araignées et les mêmes variables environnementales a été étudiée par une série d’analyses de co-inertie. La hauteur moyenne des arbres est la meilleure variable explicative pour tous les taxa à la fois au niveau de la richesse spécifique, de la composition des assemblages et de l’espèce. Les variables paysagères constituent des facteurs secondaires importants, en particulier la fragmentation du paysage, l’hétérogénéité spatiale et la forme et la distribution spatiale des îlots de feuillus dans le paysage environnant. La présence d’îlots de feuillus et l’hétérogénéité du paysage sont favorables aux oiseaux et aux araignées des habitats forestiers, mais ne favorisent pas les carabiques, sans doute en raison de la moindre capacité de dispersion des carabiques forestiers

Many studies in marine coastal lagoons have focused on the marine-to-terrestrial gradient as a main source of variation for the structure of assemblages. In this paper, the magnitude of differences among locations arranged along the marine-to-terrestrial gradient of the western lagoon of Orbetello (Grosseto, Italy) was contrasted with the amount of spatial variability occurring among sets of locations that were not positioned along this axis. We propose that if the most important processes influencing assemblages were those associated with the external-internal gradient of the lagoon, as usually supposed, then assemblages should differ more among these locations than among any other locations. To test the above proposition, four locations arranged along the two major axes of the lagoon were established in November 2000. Each location was sampled three times (November 2000, April 2001, August 2001) to test for temporal consistency in spatial patterns. At each time of sampling, three replicate sites were established in each location. This design enabled estimates of spatial variability to be obtained at three scales: among locations hundreds of meters apart, among sites tens of meters apart and among quadrats hundreds of centimeters apart. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) ordination plots on abundance data revealed differences among assemblages hundreds of meters apart. Assemblages in the inner part of the lagoon were separated from those closer to the sea inlet, depending on the marine-to-terrestrial gradient. In addition to this pattern, differences also occurred among assemblages hundreds of meters apart, but positioned at a similar distance from the sea. Multifactorial Anovas on abundance of the most common taxa showed significant differences in mean values at the scales of location and site, with patterns changing over time. These results indicated that spatial structure in assemblages was not a distinctive feature of locations arranged along the marine-to-terrestrial gradient in the lagoon of Orbetello. Similar differences also occurred among other sets of locations at the scale of hundreds of meters, regardless of their position in the lagoon., Beaucoup de recherches sur les lagunes côtières se sont focalisées sur le gradient terre-mer comme principale source de variation de la structure des assemblages. Dans cet article, l'importance des différences d'un lieu à l'autre le long d'un tel gradient dans la partie ouest de la lagune d'Orbetello (Grosseto, Italie) est comparée avec l'importance de la variabilité spatiale de sites qui ne sont pas situés sur cet axe. Si l'influence dominante était bien liée à ce gradient interne-externe, les assemblages devraient différer plus nettement au sein de ces lieux, comparé à tout autre lieu. Pour tester cette proposition, quatre lieux le long des deux axes majeurs de la lagune ont été échantillonnés à trois reprises : novembre 2000, avril 2001 et août 2001. À chaque sortie, trois sites-répliques ont été établis pour chaque lieu. Cette stratégie permet d'estimer la variabilité spatiale à trois échelles : au sein des lieux à des distances de 100 mètres, au sein des sites à des distances de 10 mètres et au sein des quadrats à des distances d'un mètre. Des diagrammes d'abondance classés suivant une échelle multidimensionnelle non métrique révèlent des différences au sein des assemblages distants de centaines de mètres. Les assemblages dans la partie intérieure de la lagune sont séparés de ceux plus près du grau, en accord avec le gradient terre-mer. À côté de ce schéma, des différences apparaissent également parmi les assemblages distants de plusieurs centaines de mètres mais situés à une même distance de la mer. Une analyse multifactorielle utilisant le test Anovas sur l'abondance des taxons les plus fréquents montre des différences significatives des valeurs moyennes aux échelles du lieu et du site, avec des schémas d'organisation variant au cours du temps. Ces résultats montrent que la structure spatiale des assemblages n'est pas un trait caractéristique des lieux bâti autour du terre-mer dans la lagune d'Orbetello. Des différences similaires se rencontrent également parmi les autres ensembles de lieux à l'échelle des centaines de mètres, ceci dépendant de leur position dans la lagune.
