Satoyama is one of the semi-natural ecosystems in Japan. Traditional agricultural practices in satoyama provide preferable habitats for many species, thus, enhancing biodiversity. However, many satoyama ecosystems have been altered by agricultural intensification and rapid urbanization. Meanwhile, ageing and shrinking population has led to the abandonment of remaining satoyama ecosystems, resulting in their potential degradation. We argue that counteracting the abandonment of satoyama is particularly essential in urbanized landscapes because conserving its biodiversity would have a payoff for urban communities. We focused on nature-oriented park use of satoyama ecosystems, utilizing their original scenery, topography, water features, and vegetation. To evaluate the potential of nature-oriented park use for biodiversity conservation, we examined the differences in diversity and species composition of vascular plants and butterflies among three land-use types (agricultural-use, park-use, and abandoned sites) of satoyama ecosystems. Diversity of native plants and butterflies did not significantly differ between agricultural-use and park-use sites and that of native plants was significantly lower at abandoned sites than at agricultural-use sites. Although species composition of native plants at agricultural-use sites and park-use sites significantly differ, that of native butterflies did not. The efficacy of park use for biodiversity conservation, thus, depended on the taxa. Nonetheless, for striking a balance between the difficulty in maintaining agricultural use and accelerating satoyama abandonment, our study highlights the utility of park use as an alternative usage, contributing to biodiversity conservation. Balancing the wise use of satoyama in urbanized landscapes is a fundamental step toward the conservation of its biodiversity and human–nature interactions.

Ecosystem functions are threatened by continuing global loss of biodiversity. We simultaneously investigated three ecosystem functions and forage nutrient values following potential species extinction scenarios (dominant species removal, rare species removal, end-member species removal and random species removal) in a Mongolian grassland. ANPP, forage nutrient values, litter decomposition, and soil respiration were measured one and/or two years after plant removal. DNA samples of microorganisms extracted from the soil were subjected to metagenomics analysis. Finally, we calculated the multifunctionality, and examined the relationship of multifunctionality with plant and microorganism diversity. Among ecosystem functions, ANPP and litter decomposition rate decreased under random and rare species extinction scenarios, respectively, and forage quality increased when only dominant species had been removed. Diversity and species composition of soil microorganism were not affected by plant species richness or removal scenario. Only genus-level diversity of bacteria and ANPP were significantly and positively correlated with microbial diversity. Taken together, decreasing species richness of plants and soil organisms rarely impaired multifunctionality. Ecosystem functions were relatively robust to realistic disturbances and species extinction in natural grasslands. However, as each function responded differently to the different sets of species removed, the consequences of a realistic non-random extinction scenario for multiple ecosystem functions should be critical to the management of biodiversity loss caused by different disturbances.

A growing body of empirical evidence has suggested that biodiversity affects the simultaneous performance of multiple ecosystem functions (i.e. ecosystem multifunctionality). Given increasing environmental variability and uncertainty under global change, an emerging question is how biodiversity influences the stability of multiple functions (i.e. multifunctional stability). We currently know little, however, about the determinants and mechanisms of multifunctional stability, which is of practical importance for ensuring the sustainable provision of multiple functions. Here, we examined mechanisms contributing to stability (quantified as the ratio of the mean to the standard deviation) of multiple functions related to ecosystem productivity and carbon sequestration, including plant above‐ground and below‐ground productivity, litter production, gross primary productivity and ecosystem respiration, in a large grassland biodiversity experiment in Inner Mongolia. We found that community‐wide species asynchrony was a strong driver to stabilize multiple functions. Community‐wide asynchrony mediated the positive effects of species richness and response diversity (describing how species with similar effects on ecosystem function respond differently to environmental change) on multifunctional stability. However, species richness had a negative direct effect on multifunctional stability because, although it increased the averaged temporal mean of multiple functions, it strongly increased the averaged temporal standard deviation of multiple functions. The overall effects of species richness on multifunctional stability were thus negative, whereas those of response diversity were positive. Synthesis. The studied ecosystem functions related to ecosystem productivity and carbon sequestration are important in natural grasslands across the world. We conclude that species asynchrony and response diversity, rather than species richness, are key to the ecosystem multifunctional stability. The loss of response diversity and compensatory mechanisms would likely reduce the long‐term sustainability of grasslands in the face of global change.

Cultural ecosystem services (CES) represent the intangible dimensions of the links between people and ecosystems. The evaluation and mapping of CES are critical and can be deeply involved in policy and decision-making concerning the management of ecosystems. Many previous studies have evaluated CES occurred through on-site and proximate contacts with nature such as walking in the forest, watching wildlife, or enjoying landscapes. However, fewer studies evaluated CES occurred in an off-site and distant way through conventional media such as TV and radio, and their spatially explicit evaluations are particularly rare. This paper focused on nature TV programs in Japan as an indicator of CES related to education, aesthetic enjoyment, and nature experience. We revealed the geographical distribution of nature programs across the Japanese archipelago. The associations of the number of TV programs with a range of key factors are discussed. The number of nature programs, and the temporal trends in such associations are explained. We obtained 4,117 nature programs that covered 1,691 locations across the Japanese archipelago between 2004 and 2017. We found that many nature programs dealt with World Natural Heritage Sites (WNHS) and World Cultural Heritage Sites (WCHS), including the Shiretoko peninsula (85 programs), Yakushima island (35 programs), Mt. Fuji (52 programs), and the mountainous areas around the Japanese Alps. In general, the number of Hyakumeizan (100 famous Japanese mountains) and the proportion of WNHS, WCHS, and lake areas within the search radii of 5, 10, and 15 km from the geotagged location of nature program were significantly positively correlated with the number of nature programs across the study period (2004–2017). In particular, the presence of famous mountains has become a relevant predictor of the number of nature programs since around 2012, consistent with the rise of mountaineering and hiking trends in Japan. Our result suggests that the designation as WNHS and WCHS would facilitate maintaining and managing invaluable nature and cultural landscapes of outstanding universal value, and thereby contributing to provide CES through TV programs.

To be effective, the next generation of conservation practitioners and managers need to be critical thinkers with a deep understanding of how to make evidence-based decisions and of the value of evidence synthesis. 2. If, as educators, we do not make these priorities a core part of what we teach, we are failing to prepare our students to make an effective contribution to conservation practice. 3. To help overcome this problem we have created open access online teaching materials in multiple languages that are stored in Applied Ecology Resources. So far, 117 educators from 23 countries have acknowledged the importance of this and are already teaching or about to teach skills in appraising or using evidence in conservation decision-making. This includes 145 undergraduate, postgraduate or professional development courses. 4. We call for wider teaching of the tools and skills that facilitate evidence-based conservation and also suggest that providing online teaching materials in multiple languages could be beneficial for improving global understanding of other subject areas. Making informed conservation and ecosystem management choices is based upon a sound understanding of the relevant evidence. There is an increasing wealth of conservation science available, and access to this is becoming easier. But, are conservation practitioners being trained to utilize this information? In conservation, decision-making is often based upon past experience or expert knowledge, as opposed to the full body of scientific literature (e.g., Pullin, Knight, Stone, & Charman, 2004; Rafidimanantsoa, Poudyal, Ramamonjisoa, & Jones, 2018). The failure to include scientific evidence in decision-making has the potential to reduce the effectiveness of management, or even lead to detrimental actions being undertaken (Walsh, Dicks, & Sutherland, 2015). Evidence-based conservation (EBC) seeks to avoid this by providing tools to facilitate and inform decision-making. To do this, scientific evidence is collated and critically appraised for its quality and relevance, and integrated with other knowledge, experience, values and costs (Sutherland, Pullin, Dolman, & Knight, 2004). Wider adoption of EBC requires conservation professionals to be trained in its principles and taught how to use it to inform conservation decision-making. MAVA Foundation; Arcadia Fund.

Diversification of fisheries and agroecosystems can increase and stabilize production and revenue, despite unpredictable changes in ecosystems and markets. Recent work suggests that diversification can provide multiple benefits simultaneously, but empirical evidence of relationships between catch or crop diversification and the provision of multiple benefits is scarce. The effect of diversification on multiple benefits may vary temporally and among systems. Using long‐term (11–54 years) capture fishery statistics from five Japanese lakes, we examined whether catch diversity increased multiple benefits, including revenue, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, and seasonal commercial species diversity. We also assessed whether catch species diversity increased the stability of each benefit via a portfolio effect (PE). Our study revealed positive relationships between catch diversity and the bundle of benefits (the mean of all normalized benefits; i.e., the provisioning of multiple benefits) in all five lakes, even after controlling for the total catch. The effects of catch diversity on individual benefits were positive or insignificant and differed among the study lakes. These differences were likely caused by the range and variation of functional characteristics among catch species. The influence of the annual mean price on revenue suggested that market forces did have an effect. We also found that aggregated revenue as well as N and P removal were 1.6–2.1 times (four lakes), 1.5–2.2 times (four lakes), and 1.4–2.2 times (all five lakes) more stable, respectively, than would be expected if only a single species were harvested. This greater stability suggests that maintaining catch species diversity may increase the stability of multiple benefits through PEs. Synthesis and applications. Our analysis suggests that catch diversification has great potential to increase the magnitude and stability of multiple benefits. Although total catch alone was sufficient to provide multiple benefits, a goal of maximization with specialization may decrease stability and deplete resources. Under fluctuating environmental and economic conditions, diversification strategies promise to be a potential management option for achieving resilient and sustainable inland fisheries.

The concept of an ecological threshold has spurred important advances in understanding the nonlinear responses of ecosystems to various disturbances. Yet integrated evaluations of an ecosystem’s structural threshold and functional threshold are rare, and we know little about linkages between observed nonlinear changes in ecosystem structure along disturbance gradients and the associated changes in system feedbacks. We applied a two-step approach to perform integrated evaluations of structural and functional thresholds in a Mongolian shrubland. First, by using 6 years of data from plant communities along a gradient of grazing intensity, we identified the structural threshold in the changes in shrub cover along the gradient. We then identified the functional threshold at which wind erosion rates were accelerated due to sufficient decline in shrub cover. We found that shrub cover changed abruptly along the grazing gradient, indicating the presence of a structural threshold. Shrub cover decreased gradually along the grazing gradient to the threshold of 6.9%; thereafter it decreased rapidly. This level of shrub cover was close to that of the functional threshold (5.3%), namely the point at which the rate of wind erosion was accelerated. Our key finding is the coupling of structural and functional thresholds, suggesting that the modification of feedbacks between wind erosion and shrub cover might be associated with the nonlinear response of ecosystem structure to grazing. To bridge the gap between management applications and ecological threshold theory, it is essential to understand the potential feedback mechanisms that would contribute to nonlinear changes in ecosystem structure.

Question Environmental variability (e.g., in precipitation) has a large effect on vegetation dynamics, and this often makes it difficult to assess the recovery of vegetation after a disturbance. In this study, we assessed vegetation recovery trends in response to grazing exclusion while considering for the annual environmental variability. Location Two regions with highly variable precipitation: a steppe near Mandalgobi (45°46′N, 106°16′E), in Mongolia's Central Gobi province, and a desert steppe near Bulgan (43°54′N, 103°31′E), in Mongolia's South Gobi province. Changes in vegetation were observed along grazing gradients at these two sites, and vegetation thresholds were identified. Methods We established reference plots in pre-threshold areas along the grazing gradients. We removed the impact of livestock grazing at various locations along the grazing gradients by establishing exclosures, and investigated vegetation from 2005 through 2013. We developed a smoothed hierarchical model within a Bayesian framework, and examined the effect of grazing exclusion on vegetation, focusing especially on the extent of grass cover recovery. In addition, we compared soil nutrient conditions in the reference plots and inside and outside each exclosure along the grazing gradients. Results Temporal trends in the cover of perennial grass in each plot inside and outside of the exclosures largely coincided, irrespective of grazing intensity, and exclosure had no effect (Bulgan) or a negative effect (Mandalgobi) on vegetation recovery. Soil nutrient content was not significantly affected by exclosure at a given distance from the grazing source, but decreased significantly with decreasing grazing intensity. Thus, recovery of the land from a post-threshold state may not be apparent even after 9 years of grazing exclusion in environments with highly variable precipitation. Conclusion The effect of exclosure duration on perennial grass cover was limited, even after controlling for environmental variability. Once a vegetation threshold has been crossed, merely removing livestock from the landscape may not be sufficient for that area to recover. This article is protected by copyright. Recent studies have increasingly explored peoples’ perceptions of urban greenspaces to incorporate their consensus and preference into a more feasible design and planning of urban ecosystems. However, little is known about the relative importance of several factors determining perceptions of urban street trees, which is fundamental to unveiling the full picture of perception. Here, we examined the influences of possible factors ranging from social to environmental ones on people’s on-site perception of street trees in the Minatomirai-21 district in the Tokyo-Yokohama region. Using a structured questionnaire, we conducted a survey to enquire about on-site perceptions of the ecosystem services and disservices potentially provided by street trees. Results suggested that attributes of urban building environments (street width and building height) and street trees (tree density and height, as well as dominant planted species) had little effect on the on-site perceptions of street trees. Instead, the results generally showed that on-site perceptions differed according to age, gender, and season. Relatively high perceptions of positive aspects of street trees, regardless of their attributes across sites, probably reflected people's satisfaction with street trees and streetscapes in the Minatomirai-21 district. Moreover, in the context of people's perception, our results suggested that the negative effects of street trees on the quality of life are limited. We argue that ensuring a certain number of street trees, even in a densely urbanized area, should be essential to benefit the quality of life among various stakeholders such as visitors, office workers, and residents.

Land degradation in an abandoned field, such as the loss of palatable species for livestock and low species richness, is a serious problem in Mongolia where the dominant land use is livestock grazing historically. Here, we show the factors limiting vegetation recovery processes after cessation of cropping in a semiarid grassland. We selected fields abandoned in 1990 (CA18), 1999 (CA9), and 2006 (CA2) and continuously grazed grassland (CGG) as a control site. Plant species cover and soil were sampled during summer (June–July) 2008. Soil physicochemical properties were analyzed. Low similarity index of an early succession stage, CA2, with CGG was associated with abundant P and coarse sand. The proportion of coarse sand was not abundant in middle stage (CA9) because of domination by perennial rhizomatous species. In the later stage (CA18), the fine sand proportion did not increase; however, the dominant species were associated with fine sand in CGG. The results suggest the limiting factors of recovery processes in abandoned Mongolian cropland are abundantly available P and coarse sand at an early succession stage (CA2). The small proportion of fine sand in CA18 indicated that the impacts of cropping in Mongolia persist for a long time.

In a recent review, Violle et al. [1] presented the concept of functional rarity along with ways to quantify it by combining species functional traits and abundance information. Classifying species according to their rarity will improve conservation strategies, and the ideas by Violle et al. [1] are a timely step forward in this direction. Building on these solid bases is certainly advisable, although there is room for improvement in the scope and in the methods proposed. We stress here some points to help advancing this approach into a more general and flexible tool.

Coping with climate change in socio-ecological systems is one of the most urgent issues facing the world. This is particularly true in socio-ecological systems, where climate not only influences social and ecosystem dynamics, but also modulates their interaction. In this paper, we presented a conceptual framework through a literature review and a trend analysis for assessing the impact of climate change that incorporates socio-ecological interactions. In particular, we focused on the Mongolian pastoral system, which has tightly coupled socio-ecological interactions, as a model for describing the framework. Our framework suggests that the flexibility in mobility of herders is the principal factor in determining the vulnerability of the socio-ecological system to climate change. The flexibility varies along a climatic gradient and socio-ecological interactions in each region have evolved to be suited to its local climate regime. Herders in northern and central regions of Mongolia move shorter distances, and less flexible, than those in southern (Gobi) region. Climatic hazards, on the other hand have been increasing across Mongolia with a trend toward warmer and drier conditions since the 1960s. We suggest that further warming and drying would have the greatest impact on northern and central regions due to lower flexibility in mobility among herders there coupled with the much higher livestock density in the regions. The findings support that maintaining flexibility of mobile herding will likely be crucial to reducing the vulnerability of the Mongolian pastoral system to climate change.

Herbivores alter plant biodiversity (species richness) in many of the world’s ecosystems, but the magnitude and the direction of herbivore effects on biodiversity vary widely within and among ecosystems. One current theory predicts that herbivores enhance plant biodiversity at high productivity but have the opposite effect at low productivity. Yet, empirical support for the importance of site productivity as a mediator of these herbivore impacts is equivocal. Here, we synthesize data from 252 large-herbivore exclusion studies, spanning a 20-fold range in site productivity, to test an alternative hypothesis—that herbivore-induced changes in the competitive environment determine the response of plant biodiversity to herbivory irrespective of productivity. Under this hypothesis, when herbivores reduce the abundance (biomass, cover) of dominant species (for example, because the dominant plant is palatable), additional resources become available to support new species, thereby increasing biodiversity. By contrast, if herbivores promote high dominance by increasing the abundance of herbivory-resistant, unpalatable species, then resource availability for other species decreases reducing biodiversity. We show that herbivore-induced change in dominance, independent of site productivity or precipitation (a proxy for productivity), is the best predictor of herbivore effects on biodiversity in grassland and savannah sites. Given that most herbaceous ecosystems are dominated by one or a few species, altering the competitive environment via herbivores or by other means may be an effective strategy for conserving biodiversity in grasslands and savannahs globally. Ecosystems that exhibit alternative stable states are a prominent challenge for ecological restoration. So far, alternative stable states have been addressed from two different angles: community assembly studies, which focus on species and their interactions, and regime shift studies, which focus on changes in ecosystem states following environmental change. Here, we propose a synthetic perspective that merges the community assembly with the regime shift approach to effectively inform restoration of ecosystems exhibiting alternative stable states. We show that the community assembly and the regime shift approaches have emphasized different aspects of alternative stable states (i.e., coarse vs fine resolutions of the focal state variable, different sets of feedback mechanisms, and small vs large spatial scales), and consequently have different limitations that influence restoration strategies. Using a simple mathematical model, we illustrate that a more explicit consideration of species identity and composition (i.e., the community assembly approach) can improve our ability to understand regime shifts and restore degraded ecosystems. Finally, we highlight two case studies in which such merging can bring novel insights into alternative stable states and ecological restoration. As species richness increases, habitat filtering should constrain the expansion of total niche volume, while limiting similarity should restrict the degree of niche overlap between species. Here, by explicitly incorporating intraspecific trait variability, we investigate the relationship between functional niche occupancy and species richness at the global scale. 2.We assembled 21 datasets worldwide, spanning tropical to temperate biomes and consisting of 313 plant communities representing different growth forms. We quantified three key niche occupancy components (the total functional volume, the functional overlap between species and the average functional volume per species) for each community, related each component to species richness, and compared each component to the null expectations. 3.As species richness increased, communities were more functionally diverse (an increase in total functional volume), and species overlapped more within the community (an increase in functional overlap) but did not more finely divide the functional space (no decline in average functional volume). Null model analyses provided evidence for habitat filtering (smaller total functional volume than expectation), but not for limiting similarity (larger functional overlap and larger average functional volume than expectation) as a process driving the pattern of functional niche occupancy. 4.Synthesis. Habitat filtering is a widespread process driving the pattern of functional niche occupancy across plant communities and coexisting species tend to be more functionally similar rather than more functionally specialized. Previous studies reported the positive diversity-productivity relationship could be explained by combinations of species with different rooting distributions and greater legume abundance. However, because plant production is limited by soil water availability in arid areas, we study the positive diversity-productivity relationship of Mongolian semi-arid grasslands and the complementary use of water in these diverse plant communities. Plant species richness influences productivity through different pathways involving root weight and soil water content or legume abundance. We have examined these variables in plant species in a controlled site in Mongolia, determined the significance of these different pathways using path analysis, and performed single linear regression analysis between the significant factors. The results of the path analysis backed the hypothesis that the diversity-productivity relationship was not explained by greater legume abundance but by complementary usage of soil water by the plant communities of the arid grassland. These results were further supported by a significant positive relationship between plant species richness and root weight in shallow soil layers, and a negative relationship between plant species richness and water content or water potential, and root weight and soil water content.

Globally, anthropogenic disturbances are occurring at unprecedented rates and over extensive spatial and temporal scales. Human activities also affect natural disturbances, prompting shifts in their timing and intensities. Thus, there is an urgent need to understand and predict the response of ecosystems to disturbance. In this study, we investigated whether there are general determinants of community response to disturbance across different community types, locations, and disturbance events. We compiled 14 case studies of community response to disturbance from four continents, twelve aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem types, and eight different types of disturbance. We used community compositional differences and species richness to indicate community response. We used mixed-effects modeling to test the relationship between each of these response metrics and four potential explanatory factors: regional species pool size, isolation, number of generations passed, and relative disturbance intensity. We found that compositional similarity was higher between pre- and post-disturbance communities when the disturbed community was connected to adjacent undisturbed habitat. The number of generations that had passed since the disturbance event was a significant, but weak, predictor of community compositional change; two communities were responsible for the observed relationship. We found no significant relationships between the factors we tested and changes in species richness. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to search for general drivers of community resilience from a diverse set of case studies. The strength of the relationship between compositional change and isolation suggests that it may be informative in resilience research and biodiversity management.

Experiments that simulate nonrandom species loss from natural communities can offer a fundamentally different understanding of the impacts of species loss on ecosystem function and their underlying mechanisms compared to seeding experiments where species are randomly assembled from a local species pool. We examined the mechanisms underlying changes in primary productivity following experimental species loss scenarios in Mongolian grassland. The range of species loss scenarios was based on natural patterns of species abundance that reflect the species' contributions to ecosystem processes. We found a clear reduction in productivity due to species loss only when species were lost randomly. Grassland productivity was relatively robust following nonrandom species loss scenarios. Even in the context of density compensation, the decrease in dominant trait values for leaf height would explain the reduction in productivity with random species loss. In contrast, the maintenance of dominant trait values of key productivity traits such as leaf dry matter content and leaf height might contribute to the maintenance of productivity in response to nonrandom species loss. Our experiment demonstrated that the responses and mechanisms of primary productivity to species loss differ according to the scenarios of species loss in natural grassland communities. The effects of diversity on productivity might be weak in mature natural systems when species loss is nonrandom. Understanding the consequences of realistic species loss on ecosystem functioning based on field-based removal experiments will give insights into real conservation strategies in the face of global biodiversity change.

Recent research in the Hakkoda Mountains has shown that climate change during recent decades has caused a shift in the distribution of subalpine coniferous forest, which is dominated by Abies mariesii. To examine this shift, we analyzed past and present aerial photographs and found population dynamics evidence that suggests a shift of this species’ distribution to higher elevations. A fine-scale habitat suitability model for the species elucidated the environmental conditions that determine its present distribution, and this model can be applied to predict the future distribution under the predicted warming scenarios. The model showed that not only temperature but also topography and snow deposition will regulate the future distribution. One important suggestion is that habitats at the periphery of moorlands will act as refugia for A. mariesii during the warming process. The fine-scale habitat model may therefore guide the management by providing a measure of how populations will adapt to environmental change.

With ever-increasing human pressure on ecosystems, it is critically important to predict how ecosystem functions will respond to such human-induced perturbations. We define perturbations as either changes to abiotic environment (e.g. eutrophication, climate change) that indirectly affects biota, or direct changes to biota (e.g. species introductions). While two lines of research in ecology, biodiversity-ecosystem function (BDEF) and ecological resilience (ER) research, have addressed this issue, both fields of research have nontrivial shortcomings in their abilities to address a wide range of realistic scenarios. We outline how an integrated research framework may foster a deeper understanding of the functional consequences of perturbations via simultaneous application of (i) process-based mechanistic predictions using trait-based approaches and (ii) detection of empirical patterns of functional changes along real perturbation gradients. In this context, the complexities of ecological interactions and evolutionary perspectives should be integrated into future research. Synthesis and applications. Management of human-impacted ecosystems can be guided most directly by understanding the response of ecosystem functions to controllable perturbations. In particular, we need to characterize the form of a wide range of perturbation-function relationships and to draw connections between those patterns and the underlying ecological processes. We anticipate that the integrated perspectives will also be helpful for managers to derive practical implications for management from academic literature.
