Amending croplands with forest residues may help in restoring soil properties in fields subject to intensive land management. Despite their known benefits when applied separately, co-application of wood biochar with paper mill biosolids (PB) has seen little investigation under field conditions. A study was initiated in Québec, QC, Canada, to determine the effect of a single application of wood biochar with and without PB on the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability of two pH-neutral to alkaline loamy soils. Biochar at 0, 10, and 20 Mg dry weight·ha−1 and PB at 30 Mg wet weight·ha−1 were applied before planting of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in 2018. Residual effect of this co-application was determined under soybean and corn in the subsequent year. In both years, corn received supplemental N and P from mineral fertilizers according to local agronomic recommendations. Co-applying biochar and PB reduced soil NO3-N availability in the year of application and decreased corn yield by 1.0 Mg·ha−1 compared with biochar or PB applied alone, but these amendments did not affect soybean yields. In the following year, the previous biochar addition increased soybean yield by 0.6 Mg·ha−1 but had little effect on corn. For both years, biochar addition induced a large increase in soil Mehlich-3 P. This study revealed that wood biochar positively impacted P status of these soils but was not a source of N to crops even when co-applied with PB.

Biochar is a source of stable organic matter being explored as a manure additive. A 64 d incubation experiment was conducted to quantify the short-term effect of manure (RM), biochar–manure (BM), raw biochar (BC), RM + BC, and BM + BC amendment on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization. Manure increased CO2-C emission rates, with the highest cumulative CO2-C emissions being observed for RM + BC. Treatments with BM halted soil C mineralization, indicating manure-C stabilization. By contrast, neither RM nor BM affected soil N mineralization. Applying BM might benefit soil C sequestration by lowering CO2-C emissions over the long term.

A greenhouse trial assessed the effects of biochar and vermicompost as partial substitutes of conventional growing media on leafy vegetables’ yields and changes of NH4+-N and NO3−-N in growing medium and leachates. Six growing media mixtures [(a) coir, (b) coir + biochar, (c) coir + vermicompost, (d) peat, (e) peat +vermicompost, (f) peat + biochar] combined with three nitrogen (N) rates [0% (0 g N·pot−1), 50% (0.5 g N·pot−1), and 100% (1.0 g N·pot−1) commercial recommendation] were arranged in a split-plot design with three replicates. On average, the yield gap between 100% N and 50% N was improved when biochar and vermicompost were used as substitutes of coir (32% and 28% vs. 49%) and peat (14% and 18% vs. 27%). The concentrations of NH4+-N in the leachates for peat + biochar varied between 17.20 and 1.00 mg·L−1. The concentrations of NO3−-N in the leachates varied between 130.0 and 1.0 mg·L−1 for coir + vermicompost, and 60 and 1.0 mg·L−1 for peat + vermicompost. The residual NO3−-N in peat + biochar growing media and the leachates did not match the changes observed for NH4+-N, and the much lower residual NH4+-N indicates possible NH4+-N retention by biochar and loss through volatilization in the early growth stages. Our results show that partial substitution of peat with biochar and coir with vermicompost maintained acceptable crop yield at 50% N due probably to N supply by vermicompost and decreased residual mineral N and loss by biochar in the leachates which could be beneficial for the environment.

Renewable materials including coir, biochar, and composts are investigated worldwide in the horticultural industry to partially substitute peat in growing media. In this study, we assessed the effects of biochar and vermicompost as partial substitution of peat and compared these peat-based growing media with coir in terms of NH4+-N and NO3−-N content, CO2-C and N2O-N emissions and their microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen. Six growing media mixtures (peat; peat + biochar 9:1 v/v; peat + vermicompost 9:1 v/v; coir; coir + biochar 9:1 v/v; coir + vermicompost 9:1 v/v) replicated three times were incubated in growth chambers during a 60 d period. At day 0 of incubation (DAI), peat amended with biochar retained around 12.81% of NH4+-N compared with peat alone. The concentrations of NO3−-N peaked at 275 mg·kg−1 at 33 DAI for peat and 552 mg·kg−1 at 46 DAI for coir amended with vermicompost. The substitution of peat with biochar resulted in large CO2-C [2070 μg CO2-C·g−1 dry weight (DW)] and N2O-N (62.78 μg N2O-N·g−1 DW) emissions, but not coir. The substitution of coir with vermicompost increased N2O-N emissions at a much lower level (47.53 μg N2O-N·g−1 DW) than peat (111.82 μg N2O-N·g−1 DW). Our results showed that supplements of vermicompost in peat and coir improved N supply which could benefit plant growth, while substituting part of peat with biochar increased CO2-C and N2O-N emissions. In contrast, no effect of biochar was observed with coir, which is beneficial for the environmental footprint of short-cycle growing crops.

Soil amended with biochar is expected to produce less nitrous oxide (N2O), although this may depend on nitrate (NO3-N) availability. Our objective was to determine how pine wood biochar, slow pyrolyzed at 500 °C, affects N2O production in soil having different denitrification potentials with variable NO3-N concentrations under controlled laboratory conditions. Sandy loam surface soils (0–30 cm, pH 5.7) and sandy clay loam subsurface soils (40–60 cm, pH 5.6) were amended with four biochar rates (0, 10, 20, and 30 g·kg−1), two nitrogen fertilizer rates (0 and 100 mg·kg−1 NO3-N) and two acetylene levels (0% and 10% headspace), arranged as a full factorial. Soil moisture content was adjusted to 80% water-filled pore space, and flasks were incubated at 20 °C for 30 h. Headspace gas was collected from each flask at 25, 26, 28, and 30 h. There was a significant reduction in N2O production with an increasing rate of biochar in the surface soil but not in the subsurface soil. On average, less N2O was produced in the subsurface soil than in the surface soil. As the NO3-N concentration was not a limiting factor for denitrification, the most likely explanation was that denitrifier activity was influenced by the availability of soluble organic carbon in the soil–biochar mixtures. We recommend further study of the coupled carbon–nitrogen transformations during denitrification to understand how biochar influences soil N2O production in sandy loam soils.

Liquid hog manure (LHM) and solid cattle manure (SCM) co-applied with biochar could beneficially influence soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) dynamics. A split-plot design was used at two sites (Brown and Black) in Saskatchewan to assess LHM and SCM (100 kg N·ha−1) applied alone or in combination with biochars (8 Mg carbon·ha−1) produced using slow or fast pyrolysis. Crop growth and nutrient uptake, along with fertilizer 15N recovery, were followed over four years in a cereal–oilseed rotation. Crop growth on the Brown soil was more responsive to the treatments than the Black soil, reflecting lower fertility of the Brown soil. The manure and biochar, applied alone or in combination, had little impact on available soil P. Manure and biochar effects on crop growth and nutrient uptake were attributed to temporal effects on soil N immobilization–mineralization influencing plant-available soil N. A negative impact of the fast pyrolysis biochar on growth and plant uptake was observed and attributable to its greater labile-carbon content, which likely promoted soil N immobilization. Synergism observed between SCM and the slow pyrolysis biochar may reflect enhanced net SCM-N mineralization and increased water-holding capacity. The majority (55%–80%) of plant 15N recovery occurred during the first year, with 86% of fertilizer 15N conserved within the soil–plant system after four years. Greater (40%) plant 15N recovery without biochar addition, coupled with increased (38%) soil 15N recovery with added biochar, suggests biochar-related immobilization and (or) sorption in the biochar-amended soils.

Published by American Chemical Society The global prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is of increasing concern as a serious threat to ecological security and human health. Irrigation with sewage and farmland application of manure or biosolids in agricultural practices introduce substantial selective agents such as antibiotics and toxic metals, aggravating the transfer of ARGs from the soil environment to humans via the food chain. To address this issue, a hyperaccumulator (Sedum plumbizincicola) combined with biochar amendment was first used to investigate the mitigation of the prevalence of ARGs in cadmium and oxytetracycline co-contaminated soil by conducting a pot experiment. The addition of biochar affected the distribution of ARGs in soil and plants differently by enhancing their prevalence in the soil but restraining transmission from the soil to S. plumbizincicola. The planting of S. plumbizincicola resulted in an increase in ARGs in the soil environment. A structural equation model illustrated that mobile genetic elements played a dominant role in shaping the profile of ARGs. Taken together, these findings provide a practical understanding for mitigating the prevalence of ARGs in this soil system with complex contamination and can have profound significance for agricultural management in regard to ARG dissemination control.

Chlordecone (Kepone) (CLD) is a highly persistent pesticide formerly used in the French West Indies. High levels of this pesticide may be found in soils and constitute a subsequent source of contamination for outdoor-reared animals due to involuntary ingestion of consistent amounts of soil. In that context, carbonaceous materials may be used to amend soil to efficiently decrease the bioavailability of such organic pollutants. The present study aims to assess the efficiency of diverse amendments of a contaminated Guadeloupe nitisol using two physiologically based approaches. A set of 5 carbonaceous materials (ORBO, DARCO, Coco CO2, Oak P1.5, Sargasso biochar) was tested and used to amend Nitisol at 2% (mass basis). Bioaccessibility assessment was performed using the Ti-PBET assay (n = 4). The relative bioavailability part involved 24 piglets randomly distributed into 6 experimental groups (n = 4). Increasing nickel (Ni) demand may spur the need for creative Ni production methods. Agromining (farming for metals) uses plants that can accumulate high concentrations of metal in their biomass, called bio-ore, as a metal extraction strategy. Furthermore, biochar, produced by biomass pyrolysis under low-oxygen conditions, can be used to remove Ni from contaminated wastewaters. In this work we investigate whether biochar synthesized from the Ni-hyperaccumulating plant Odontarrhena chalcidica (synonymous Alyssum murale) can be used as a Ni-adsorbing biochar. We grew O. chalcidica on soils with varying Ni concentration, characterized the plants and resultant biochars synthesized at different pyrolysis temperatures, and analyzed Ni batch adsorption results to determine the adsorption capacity of O. chalcidica biochar. We found that Ni concentration in O. chalcidica increases with increasing soil Ni but reaches an accumulation limit around 23 g Ni kg–1 dry weight in dried leaf samples. Pyrolysis concentrated Ni in the biochar; higher pyrolysis temperatures led to higher biochar Ni concentrations (max. 87 g Ni kg–1) and surface areas (max. 103 m2/g). Finally, the O. chalcidica biochar adsorption results were comparable to high-performing Ni adsorbents in the literature. The adsorption process greatly increased the Ni concentration in some biochars, indicating that synthesizing biochar from O. chalcidica biomass and using it as a Ni adsorbent can produce a Ni-enhanced bio-ore with nickel content higher than all nickel-rich veins currently mined.

Carbon-based materials (CBM), including activated carbon (AC), activated fibres (ACF), biochar (BC), nanotubes (CNT), carbon xenogels (CX) and graphene nanosheets (GNS), possess unique properties such as high surface area, sorption and catalytic characteristics, making them very versatile for many applications in environmental remediation. They are powerful redox mediators (RM) in anaerobic processes, accelerating the rates and extending the level of the reduction of pollutants and, consequently, affecting positively the global efficiency of their partial or total removal. The extraordinary conductive properties of CBM, and the possibility of tailoring their surface to address specific pollutants, make them promising as catalysts in the treatment of effluents containing diverse pollutants. CBM can be combined with magnetic nanoparticles (MNM) assembling catalytic and magnetic properties in a single composite (C@MNM), allowing their recovery and reuse after the treatment process. Furthermore, these composites have demonstrated extraordinary catalytic properties. Evaluation of the toxicological and environmental impact of direct and indirect exposure to nanomaterials is an important issue that must be considered when nanomaterials are applied. Though the chemical composition, size and physical characteristics may contribute to toxicological effects, the potential toxic impact of using CBM is not completely clear and is not always assessed. This review gives an overview of the current research on the application of CBM and C@MNM in bioremediation and on the possible environmental impact and toxicity.

Biochar is obtained by pyrolyzing biomass and is, by definition, applied in a way that avoids its rapid oxidation to CO. Its use in agriculture includes animal feeding, manure treatment (e.g. as additive for bedding, composting, storage or anaerobic digestion), fertilizer component or direct soil application. Because the feedstock carbon is photosynthetically fixed CO from the atmosphere, producing and applying biochar is essentially a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology, which has a high-technology readiness level. However, for swift implementation of pyrogenic carbon capture and storage (PyCCS), biochar use in agriculture needs to deliver co-benefits, for example, by improving crop yields and ecosystem services and/or by improving climate change resilience by ameliorating key soil properties. Agronomic biochar research is a rapidly evolving field of research moving from less than 100 publications in 2010 to more than 15,000 by the end of 2020. Here, we summarize 26 rigorously selected meta-analyses published since 2016 that investigated a multitude of soil properties and agronomic performance parameters impacted by biochar application, for example, effects on yield, root biomass, water use efficiency, microbial activity, soil organic carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. All 26 meta-analyses show compelling evidence of the overall beneficial effect of biochar for all investigated agronomic parameters. One of the remaining challenges is the standardization of basic biochar analysis, still lacking in many studies. Incomplete biochar characterization increases uncertainty because adverse effects of individual studies included in the meta-analyses might be related to low-quality biochars, which would not qualify for certification and subsequent use (e.g. high content of contaminants, high salinity, incomplete pyrolysis, etc.). We synthesized 20 years of research to explain the interrelated processes that determine soil and plant responses to biochar. The properties of biochar and its effects within agricultural ecosystems largely depend on feedstock and pyrolysis conditions. We describe three stages of reactions of biochar in soil: dissolution (1–3 weeks); reactive surface development (1–6 months); and aging (beyond 6 months). As biochar ages, it is incorporated into soil aggregates, protecting the biochar carbon and promoting the stabilization of rhizodeposits and microbial products. Biochar carbon persists in soil for hundreds to thousands of years. By increasing pH, porosity, and water availability, biochars can create favorable conditions for root development and microbial functions. Biochars can catalyze biotic and abiotic reactions, particularly in the rhizosphere, that increase nutrient supply and uptake by plants, reduce phytotoxins, stimulate plant development, and increase resilience to disease and environmental stressors. Meta-analyses found that, on average, biochars increase P availability by a factor of 4.6; decrease plant tissue concentration of heavy metals by 17%–39%; build soil organic carbon through negative priming by 3.8% (range −21% to +20%); and reduce non-CO greenhouse gas emissions from soil by 12%–50%. Meta-analyses show average crop yield increases of 10%–42% with biochar addition, with greatest increases in low-nutrient P-sorbing acidic soils (common in the tropics), and in sandy soils in drylands due to increase in nutrient retention and water holding capacity. Studies report a wide range of plant responses to biochars due to the diversity of biochars and contexts in which biochars have been applied. Crop yields increase strongly if site-specific soil constraints and nutrient and water limitations are mitigated by appropriate biochar formulations. Biochars can be tailored to address site constraints through feedstock selection, by modifying pyrolysis conditions, through pre- or post-production treatments, or co-application with organic or mineral fertilizers. A number of processes for post-production treatment of “raw” biochars, including leaching, aeration, grinding or sieving to reduce particle size, and chemical or steam activation, have been suggested as means to enhance biochar effectiveness in agriculture, forestry, and environmental restoration. Here, I review studies on post-production processing methods and their effects on biochar physio-chemical properties and present a meta-analysis of plant growth and yield responses to post-processed vs. “raw” biochars. Data from 23 studies provide a total of 112 comparisons of responses to processed vs. unprocessed biochars, and 103 comparisons allowing assessment of effects relative to biochar particle size; additional 8 published studies involving 32 comparisons provide data on effects of biochar leachates. Overall, post-processed biochars resulted in significantly increased average plant growth responses 14% above those observed with unprocessed biochar. This overall effect was driven by plant growth responses to reduced biochar particle size, and heating/aeration treatments. The assessment of biochar effects by particle size indicates a peak at a particle size of 0.5–1.0 mm. Biochar leachate treatments showed very high heterogeneity among studies and no average growth benefit. I conclude that physiochemical post-processing of biochar offers substantial additional agronomic benefits compared to the use of unprocessed biochar. Further research on post-production treatments effects will be important for biochar utilization to maximize benefits to carbon sequestration and system productivity in agriculture, forestry, and environmental restoration. Nowadays, iron ions as a ubiquitous heavy metal pollutant are gradually concerned and the convenient and quick removal of excessive iron ions in groundwater has become a major challenge for the safety of drinking water. In this study, boron-doped biochar (B-BC) was successfully prepared at various preparation conditions with the addition of boric acid. The as-prepared material has a more developed pore structure and a larger specific surface area (up to 897.97 m²/g). A series of characterization results shows that boric acid effectively activates biochar, and boron atoms are successfully doped on biochar. Compared with the ratio of raw materials, the pyrolysis temperature has a greater influence on the amount of boron doping. Based on Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity of 800B-BC1:2 at 25 °C, 40 °C, 55 °C are 50.02 mg/g, 95.09 mg/g, 132.78 mg/g, respectively. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model can better describe the adsorption process, the adsorption process is mainly chemical adsorption. Chemical complexation, ions exchange, and co-precipitation may be the main mechanisms for Fe2+ removal.

Recent studies have shown that silicon (Si) dissolution from biochar may be influenced by the pyrolysis temperature. In addition, the enhancement of biochar by treatment with alkali has been proposed to produce a Si source that can be used for environmentally friendly plant disease control. In this study, biochars from rice straw and rice husk pretreated with KOH, CaO and K2CO3 and then pyrolyzed at 350, 450 and 550 °C were prepared to evaluate the effects of pyrolysis temperature on Si release and plant uptake from alkali-enhanced Si-rich biochar. Extractable Si and dissolution Si from the prepared biochars were assessed by different short-term chemical methods and long-term (30-day) release in dilute acid and neutral salt solutions, respectively, along with a rice potting experiment in greenhouse. For both rice straw- and husk-derived alkali-enhanced biochars (RS-10KB and HS-10K2B, respectively), increasing the pyrolysis temperature from 350 to 550 °C generally had the highest extractable Si and increased Si content extracted by 5-day sodium carbonate and ammonium nitrate (5dSCAN) designated for fertilizer Si by 61–142%, whereas non-enhanced biochars had more extractable Si at 350 °C. The alkali-enhanced biochars produced at 550 °C pyrolysis temperature also released 82–172% and 27–79% more Si than that of 350 °C produced biochar in unbuffered weak acid and neutral salt solutions, respectively, over 30 days. In addition, alkali-enhanced biochars, especially that derived from rice husk at 550 °C facilitated 6–21% greater Si uptake by rice and 44–101% higher rice grain yields than lower temperature biochars, non-enhanced biochars, or conventional Si fertilizers (wollastonite and silicate calcium slag). Overall, this study demonstrated that 550 °C is more efficient than lower pyrolysis temperature for preparing alkali-enhanced biochar to improve Si release for plant growth.

Biochar (BC) has exhibited a great potential to remove water contaminants due to its wide availability of raw materials, high surface area, developed pore structure, and low cost. However, the application of BC for water remediation has many limitations. Driven by the intense desire of overcoming unfavorable factors, a growing number of researchers have carried out to produce BC-based composite materials, which not only improved the physicochemical properties of BC, but also obtained a new composite material which combined the advantages of BC and other materials. This article reviewed previous researches on BC and BC-based composite materials, and discussed in terms of the preparation methods, the physicochemical properties, the performance of contaminant removal, and underlying adsorption mechanisms. Then the recent research progress in the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants by BC and BC-based materials was also systematically reviewed. Although BC-based composite materials have shown high performance in inorganic or organic pollutants removal, the potential risks (such as stability and biological toxicity) still need to be noticed and further study. At the end of this review, future prospects for the synthesis and application of BC and BC-based materials were proposed. This review will help the new researchers systematically understand the research progress of BC and BC-based composite materials in environmental remediation.

Silicon fertilizer and biochar have been widely used to remediate soil contaminated by heavy metals. The effects and mechanism of silicon fertilizer and biochar addition on the heavy metal availability, soil biological properties, and microbial community characteristics need further study in soils contaminated by heavy metals. Therefore, this research determined how silicon fertilizer, biochar, and their combined using affected microbial communities related with nitrogen and phosphorus cycling. The abundance and composition of the microbial community were evaluated by quantitative PCR and phospholipid fatty acid analysis, respectively. Results showed that silicon fertilizer and biochar addition significantly changed soil properties, including pH, total organic carbon, ammonium, nitrate. The Cd and Zn speciation were significantly reduced by silicon fertilizer, biochar, and their integrated application. Microbial community abundance and structure were also significantly changed. Principal component analysis shows that the difference in soil microbial community structure is the most obvious under the combined addition of biochar, silicon fertilizer and biochar. In addition, the results of fluorescence quantitative PCR showed that with biological addition, the number of soil bacteria was significantly reduced. This study reveals the influence of silicon fertilizer and biochar on bacterial and fungal communities in heavy metal soils and the effect of soil heavy metal availability.

Background The residual effects of biochar are yet to receive adequate research attention in Sub-Saharan Africa despite the assumption that the positive effect of biochar may last longer on degraded tropical soil. Hence a field experiment was conducted to assess the residual effects of biochar, farmyard compost and NPK fertilizer applications on a Ferralsol in central Uganda. Here adsorption studies were proposed on a carboxylated sludge biochar (CSB) material modified by HNO3 to assess its capacity in the removal of cobalt from aqueous solution. The as-prepared sludge biochar material was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The isotherm process could be well described by the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption kinetics indicated that cobalt adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The mechanism between Co(II) and biochar involved electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, surface complexation and physical function. The adsorption capacity on CSB was as high as 72.27 mg·g−1, surpassing original sludge biochar (SB) as CSB had abundant oxygen-containing functional groups and many hydroxyls, plus the BET surface areas increased when SB was modified by HNO3, which stimulated adsorption effect. Therefore, this work shows that CSB could be used as an efficient adsorbent to remove Co(II) in wastewater. A two-year consecutive field experiment was conducted in purple soil in southwest China, to clarify the effects of biochar (0, 10, 20 and 40 t ha−1, namely, B0, B10, B20 and B40) combined with nitrogen reduction (100%, 80% and 60% of conventional nitrogen application rate, namely, N100, N80 and N60) on soil fertility. The performance of thirty-four indices related to soil chemical, physical and biological properties was evaluated by gray correlation analysis, principal component analysis and cluster analysis to determine the most appropriate mode for soil fertilization, and to identify the main soil environmental factors affecting rapeseed yield under the biochar combined with nitrogen reduction. The results indicated that available phosphorus, geometric mean diameter of water stability, fungi number, and the utilization of sugars, amino acids, polymers and carboxylic acids by microorganisms could be used as the main soil factors affecting rapeseed yield. The highest score of soil quality was observed in N100B10 treatment, followed by N80B10 and N100B20 treatments, which were almost in line with the results of rapeseed yields. Cluster analysis classified 12 treatments into 5 main groups on the basis of the measured parameters, which was mostly consistent with the result of soil quality scores. Considering both economic and environmental benefits, 10 t ha−1 biochar combined with 144 kg ha−1 nitrogen was the best combination to restore crop productivity and soil quality, and to achieve nitrogen decreasing and benefit increasing. This study provided scientific basis for the rational fertilization and scientific management of biochar combined with nitrogen fertilizer in purple soil area of southwest China.

Waste chicken feathers are the ideal precursor for the production of low-cost N-enriched biochar. KOH-modified N-enriched biochar (KNB) containing 15.92 wt% N was successfully prepared using waste chicken feathers. The adsorption kinetics results showed that KNB had rapid Cd (2 h) and Pb (1 h) adsorption rates. The Cd and Pb adsorption capacities of KNB (the values of KF were 22.324 (Cd) and 119.654 (Pb) mg1−(1/n)·L1/n·g−1) were 7.07 and 26.52 times higher than those of the original biochar based on the adsorption isotherm results. The KNB was stable at pH 3–6 and had stronger co-adsorption capacities in double-ion systems. Based on the adsorption experiments and various characterization methods, we concluded that the primary Cd and Pb adsorption mechanisms of KNB involved electrostatic interactions, cation-π interactions, complexation, and K+ exchange. The precipitation mechanism could partially account for Pb adsorption but not for Cd adsorption. KOH modification enhanced the electronegativity of biochar and then increased the electrostatic attraction. Surface O- and N-containing functional groups were involved in Cd and Pb adsorption. Graphitic-N, oxidised-N, and O C O were the main active adsorption groups, the relative contents of which increased after KOH modification, thus increasing the Cd and Pb adsorption performance. Therefore, KNB can be used as a fast and highly efficient adsorption agent to remove Cd and Pb from wastewater containing either Cd and Pb or a combination of these two metals.

Terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are increasingly threatened by pesticide pollution resulting from extensive use of pesticides, and due to the lack of regulatory measures in the developing world, there is a need for affordable means to lessen environmental effects. This study aimed to investigate the impact of biochar amendment on the toxicity of imidacloprid to life-cycle parameters and biomarker responses of the earthworm Eisenia fetida. E. fetida was exposed to 10% biochar-amended and non-amended OECD artificial soils spiked with 0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25 and 3 mg imidacloprid/kg for 28 days. An LC50 of 2.7 mg/kg was only computed in the non-amended soil but not in the biochar-amended soil due to insignificant mortality. The EC50 calculated in the non-amended soil (0.92 mg/kg) for reproduction (fertility) was lower than the one computed in the biochar amended (0.98 mg/kg), indicating a decrease in toxicity in the biochar-amended substrate. Significant weight loss was observed at the two highest imidacloprid treatments in the non-amended soil and only at the highest treatment in the biochar-amended substrate, further highlighting the beneficial effects of biochar. Catalase activity decreased significantly at the two highest concentrations of non-amended soil. Yet, in the amended soil, the activity remained high, especially in the highest concentration, where it was significantly higher than the controls. This indicated more severe oxidative stress in the absence of biochar. In all non-amended treatments, there was a significant acetylcholinesterase inhibition, while lower inhibition percentages were observed in the biochar-amended soil. In most endpoints, the addition of biochar alleviated the toxic effects of imidacloprid, which shows that biochar has the potential to be useful in soil remediation. However, there is still a need for field studies to identify the most effective application rate of biochar for land application.

Black soldier fly (BSF) larval bioconversion can recycle nutrients in organic wastes into larval biomass and frass. While the frass has been commonly marketed as a soil amendment, its usefulness in soilless cultivation remains largely unexplored. Growth experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of surplus food-derived and okara-derived BSF larval frass as an incorporated compost, side-dress fertilizer and frass-tea drench for the cultivation of pak choi and lettuce in waste-wood derived biochar growing media. Pak choi yields from treatments with surplus food-derived frass and biochar at a 10:90 (v/v) ratio and inorganic fertilizer were comparable to those of the control which consisted of soil, peat-based compost and inorganic fertilizer. However, yields decreased with increasing frass incorporation rates owing to high salinity and potentially low oxygen conditions in the growing media. When used as a fertilizer on biochar-coir growing media, the direct application of frass as a side-dress fertilizer was 1.6-6.8 times more effective in promoting lettuce growth than the application as a frass-tea drench. Frass fertilizers derived from surplus food outperformed those derived from okara by 1.3-5.3 times. Lettuce yields were not significantly different between the treatment with surplus food-derived frass applied as a side-dress fertilizer and the control of liquid inorganic fertilizer. Variations in fertilizing potential were attributed to nutrient availability and the presence of plant growth promoting microbes in the growing media. BSF larval frass derived from food waste shows promise in partially replacing unsustainable agricultural inputs for leafy vegetable cultivation, including soil and inorganic fertilizers.

Biochar pores in the micrometer range (1–100 µm) derive from cellular structures of the plant biomass subjected to pyrolysis or can be the result of mechanical processing, such as pelleting. In this study, synchrotron X-ray microtomography was used to investigate the internal pore structure of softwood pellet biochar produced by slow pyrolysis at 550 and 700 °C. The microtomographic data sets consisted of 2025 images of 2560 × 2560 voxels with a voxel side length of 0.87 µm. The three-dimensional reconstructions revealed that pelleting and pyrolysis significantly altered the pore structures of the wood feedstock, creating a network of connected pores between fragments that resembled the wood morphology. While higher pyrolysis temperature increased the specific surface area (as determined by BET nitrogen adsorption), it did not affect the total observed porosity. Multifractal analysis was applied to assess the characteristics of the frequency distribution of pores along each of the three dimensions of reconstructed images of five softwood pellet biochar samples. The resulting singularity and Rényi spectra (generalized dimensions) indicated that the distribution of porosity had monofractal scaling behavior, was homogeneous within the analyzed volumes and consistent between replicate samples. Moreover, the pore distributions were isotropic (direction-independent), which is in strong contrast with the anisotropic pore structure of wood. As pores at the scale analyzed in this study are relevant, for example, for the supply of plant accessible water and habitable space for microorganisms, our findings combined with the ability to reproduce biochar with such pore distribution offer substantial advantages in various biochar applications. Cadmium accumulation in rice is a major source of Cd exposure in humans worldwide. A three-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the ecological safety and long-term stability of biochar combined with lime or silicon fertilizer for Cd immobilization in a polluted rice paddy. The results showed that the application of combined ameliorants could reduce the Cd content in brown rice to meet the Chinese maximum permissible limit for Cd content in food products (0.2 mg/kg). In addition, such amendments stimulated metabolic pathways in soil bacteria, including carbon metabolism, citrate cycle, pyruvate metabolism, biosynthesis of amino acids, and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, revealing improvements in soil biological activity and soil health. Therefore, the results provide a practical strategy for the safe utilization of farmland with mild levels of heavy metal pollution.

Biochar utilization for environmental remediation applications has become very popular. We investigated the trace metal levels and soil nutrient characteristics of a biochar–humus sediment slurry treatment of a simulated crude oil-contaminated soil in the present work. The results revealed that biochar prepared at moderate pyrolysis temperature (500 °C) could still retain a significantly higher nutrient content than those prepared at high temperatures (700 and 900 °C). Despite the suitability for soil treatment, one-pot treatment studies seem not to be very effective for monitoring trace metal sorption to biochar because trace metals do not biodegrade and remain in the system.

The results of studies of the effect of biocoal (biochar) from sewage sludge and sawdust on the physicochemical and biological properties of soil treated with herbicides are presented. Biocoals were obtained by pyrolysis in the absence of oxygen at a temperature of 500 ° C. It was found that the combined bio-charms from sewage sludge and wood waste stimulate the vital activity of soil microorganisms, increasing their population days after 15 days by 13.5 times, increase the biodegradation of the herbicide in the soil by 5 times in comparison with the soil without biochar treatment. The introduction of the combined biochar at a dose of 5% into the soil contaminated with herbicide increased the growth rate of tomatoes by 5 times. The proposed method of using sewage sludge and sawdust makes it possible to solve not only the problems associated with their utilization, but also to effectively restore soil from pollution.

Salt-affected soils have poor structure and physicochemical properties, which affect soil nitrogen cycling process closely related to the environment, such as denitrification and ammonia volatilization. Biochar and polyacrylamide (PAM) have been widely used as soil amendments to improve soil physicochemical properties. However, how they affect denitrification and ammonia volatilization in saline soils is unclear. In this study, the denitrification and ammonia volatilization rates were measured in a saline soil field ameliorated with three biochar application rates (0%, 2%, and 5%, w/w) and three PAM application rates (0‰, 0.4‰, and 1‰, w/w) over 3 years. The results showed that denitrification rates decreased by 23.63-39.60% with biochar application, whereas ammonia volatilization rates increased by 9.82-25.58%. The denitrification and ammonia volatilization rates decreased by 9.87-29.08% and 11.39-19.42%, respectively, following PAM addition. However, there was no significant synergistic effect of biochar and PAM amendments on the denitrification and ammonia volatilization rates. The addition of biochar mainly reduced the denitrification rate by regulating the dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity of overlying water and absorbing soil nitrate nitrogen. Meanwhile, biochar application increased pH and stimulated the transfer of NH4+-N from soil to overlying water, thus increasing NH3 volatilization rates. Hence, there was a tradeoff between denitrification and NH3 volatilization in the saline soils induced by biochar application. PAM reduced the denitrification rate by increasing the infiltration inorganic nitrogen and slowing the conversion of ammonium to nitrate. Moreover, PAM reduced the concentration of NH4+-N in the overlying water through absorbing soil ammonium and inhibiting urea hydrolysis, thereby decreasing NH3 volatilization rate.

In the northern boreal zone, revegetation and landscaping of closed mine tailings are challenging due to the high concentrations of potentially toxic elements; the use of nutrient-poor, glacigenic cover material (till); cool temperatures; and short growing period. Recycled waste materials such as biochar (BC) and composted sewage sludge (CSS) have been suggested to improve soil forming process and revegetation success as well as decrease metal bioavailability in closed mine tailing areas. We conducted two field experiments in old iron mine tailings at Rautuvaara, northern Finland, where the native mine soil or transported cover till soil had not supported plant growth since the mining ended in 1989. The impacts of CSS and spruce (Picea abies)–derived BC application to till soil on the survival and growth of selected plant species (Pinus sylvestris, Salix myrsinifolia, and grass mixture containing Festuca rubra, Lolium perenne, and Trifolium repens) were investigated during two growing seasons. In addition, the potential of BC to reduce bioaccumulation of metals in plants was studied. We found that (1) organic amendment like CSS markedly enhanced the plant growth and is therefore needed for vegetation establishment in tailing sites that contained only transported till cover, and (2) BC application to till soil-CSS mixture further facilitated the success of grass mixtures resulting in 71–250% higher plant biomass. On the other hand, (3) no effects on P. sylvestris or S. myrsinifolia were recorded during the first growing seasons, and (4) accumulation of metals in cover plants was negligible and BC application to till further decreased the accumulation of Al, Cr, and Fe in the plant tissues. Biochar application and enhanced weathering are negative emission technologies (NETs) with the potential for large-scale deployment for the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. Biochar is a solid product of pyrolysis that can permanently store carbon when applied in soil due to its chemical recalcitrance. Enhanced weathering is based on the acceleration of the natural reaction of moisture, CO2, and alkaline minerals. Both of these NETs rely on the application of pulverized material to different types of terrestrial sinks, which can include marginal and agricultural land. These two NETs can be used separately or concurrently, depending on local sink conditions. In some cases, simultaneous application of biochar and mineral powder to soil has the advantage of attaining additional beneficial effects of soil amendment. Although recent papers have reported the development of process integration models for optimizing carbon management networks based on either biochar application or enhanced weathering, none have reported models integrating these two NETs in the same system. To address this gap, a fuzzy mixed-integer linear programming model is developed that integrates biochar application and enhanced weathering for large-scale carbon sequestration. Fuzzy set theory provides a well-tested framework for integration of both subjectivity and uncertainty into mathematical programming. The model determines the optimal allocation of biochar and/or alkaline minerals from each source to each sink, while considering the application limits and CO2 sequestration potential. An illustrative case study is solved that clearly demonstrates the application of the model. The case study shows interesting results that can guide how the full sustainable potential of these two technologies can be utilized in a carbon management network.

Contamination of soils by nickel (Ni) has become a serious environmental problem throughout the world, and this substance wields dangerous effects on the ecosystem and food chain. A pot experiment was conducted to examine the effect of rice straw (RS), rice straw biochar (BI), and calcite (CC) at 1% and 2% application rates in a Ni-contaminated soil. The objective was to potentially stabilize Ni and reduce its bioavailability to spinach (Spinacia Oleracea L.). Spinach plants were grown in a Ni-contaminated Ultisol (commonly known as a red clay soil). Plant growth parameter results indicated that a BI 2% application rate significantly increased the root and shoots dry biomass increased by 1.7- and 6.3-fold, respectively, while essential nutrients were enhanced in the spinach plant compared to those in the untreated soil (CK). Moreover, adding amendments significantly decreased CaCl2 extractable Ni by 62.5% 94.1%, and 87.2%, while the toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) fell by 26.7%, 47.8%, and 41.7% when using RS, BI, and CC, respectively, at 2% compared to CK. The Ni concentrations in the spinach roots declined by 51.6%, 73.3%, and 68.9%, and in the shoots reduced by 54.1%, 76.7%, and 70.8% for RS, BI, and CC, at a 2% application rate, respectively. Bio-concentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) dropped significantly by as much as 72.7% and 20%, respectively, for BI 2% application rate. Results of the present study clearly indicated that biochar potential soil amendments for Ni stabilization, thereby reducing its bioavailability in the Ni-contaminated soil. This process enhanced the safety of food to be consumed and mitigated security risks.

In this study, we investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilizer application rates with and without phosphorus-loaded biochar (BCP) on the productivity of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv GS) planted on a contaminated soil based on pot and incubation experiments. The release kinetic of toxic metals as affected by BCP was also investigated. BCP at rate of 2% (w/w) and nitrogen levels (250 and 500 mg N kg-1) were added to sandy loam soil polluted with Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu. The experiment consisted of five treatments including: Control (C), nitrogen a rate of 250 (N250), or 500 mg kg (N500), BCP + N250, and BCP + N500. Maximum tomato growth was achieved in the soil that was treated with BCP + N500, followed by BCP + N250, while lowest one was observed in the control. Tomato yield as affected by the BCP and N-fertilization was in the descending order: BCP + N500 > BCP + N250 > N500 = N250 > C. The addition of N250, N500, BCP + N250, and BCP + N500 increased the fruit yield by 24, 31, 35, 58% in comparison with the control. Levels of Zn, Cu, and Pb in tomato fruit was in the descending order: N500> N250 > C > BCP + N500 > BCP + N250. The combined application of BCP and N-fertilization augmented the availability and uptake of essential nutrients and effectively reduced those of toxic ones. The addition of BCP + N250 decreased Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb content in fruit of tomato by 16, 10, 54, 54, and 58%, respectively, compared to the control soil, while these decreases were 13, 16, 60, 60, and 72% in the case of BCP + N500. BCP succeeded significantly in reducing the release of toxic chemicals, which ultimately may restrict the transfer of toxic chemical to the food chain solution. Novelty statement Tomato grown on metal-contaminated soils contains high levels of toxic metals. Phosphorus-loaded biochar (BCP) reduced the negative effects of high inorganic-N rates by reducing the release of toxic metals to the soil solution. BCP enhanced the soil quality indicators and increased the soil microbe's activity.

Biochar can affect CO2 emission and C sequestration from soils, but little is known about the effects of its re-application and interaction with easily accessible substrates. Since most agricultural soils are continuously reworked, understanding the mechanics of CO2 evolution as affected by soil amendments and their combinations may have important lessons for the global effort to combat climate change. In this study carried out in a controlled environment, we tested the short-term effects of biochar, and its re-application at different rates, on the production of CO2 emission and C accumulation in samples of arable soils. We used a loamy Haplic Luvisol as the substrate and added varying amounts of biochar and sources of easily accessible N and C. We observed CO2 evolution for 20 days at optimal temperature and moisture conditions. We found that in the control treatment with no biochar, the total potential respiration after the addition of (NH4)2SO4 (N) and glucose (G) was increased compared to basal respiration. The addition of biochar reduced CO2 emission in the control, N- and G-stimulated treatments by 12–22, 13‒24 and 2‒21%, respectively. Conversely, the application of biochar increased CO2 emission in the combined NG treatment. Application of biochar at a higher rate, as well as its re-application, increased soil organic carbon content and reduced emission of CO2 into the atmosphere.

A novel green composite catalyst was prepared by doping CuFe2O4 nanoparticles in the malt bagasse biochar. Composites with different ratios of malt biochar and CuFe2O4 were produced and characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, EDS, HR-TEM, UV–vis, and Zeta potential. The results revealed that CuFe2O4 was successfully supported on the malt biochar surface. The prepared composites showed the band gap energies were narrower than of CuFe2O4, increasing the photocatalytic activity. At 60 min of heterogeneous photo-Fenton, tests under visible light indicated CuFe2O4 removed 39 % of the rhodamine B color, while composites CFO1B3, CFO1B1, and CFO3B1 removed 88 %, 81 %, and 44 % of the dye, respectively. The recycling of the CFO1B3 composite indicated that it can be used in eight cycles without major losses in efficiency. In sunlight, the CFO1B3 composite achieved efficiencies of 100 % for 10 mg L−1 and 50 mg L−1 of rhodamine B at 10 and 20 min of reaction, respectively. In the proposed mechanism, it was verified that the radical OH, O2 − and h+ were the predominant reactive species involved in the degradation to intermediates of low m/z. Results showed that the novel composite formed is a promising photocatalyst for removing organic pollutants in water.

Effluent water from dyeing industries is a challenging issue. The purpose of this study was to investigate the adsorption properties of locally available Chinar tree (Platanus orientalis) lingo cellulosic materials as adsorbents for the removal of crystal violet dye from aqueous solution. The study shows that the Chinar leaf powder and Chinar leaf biochar can be used as a potential plant by-product adsorbent for the removal of crystal violet from aqueous solution. The adsorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and carbon hydrogen and nitrogen analyzer (CHNS). In batch optimization studies, the maximum removal efficiency for the adsorbents was obtained at the optimum levels of contact time (30 min), adsorbent dose (2.5 g L−1), initial dye concentration 20 mgL−1 and pH 6.52. The equilibrium adsorption data were found to follow both Langmuir and Freundlich models and maximum monolayer capacity of Chinar leaf powder and its biochar were found to be 25.88 and 30.01 mg.g−1. Also the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model constants RL(0.0425 and 0.00686 for Chinar leaf powder and Chinar leaf biochar, respectively) and n (1.3106 and 1.6103 for Chinar leaf powder and Chinar leaf biochar, respectively) suggesting favorable adsorption of crystal violet on the adsorbents. Kinetic analysis for both adsorbents revealed that adsorption experimental data was best fitted by pseudo-second-order model(R2 = 0.999). Gibb’s free energy is −2.14473 to −4.23219 for Chinar leaf powder and −7.18828 to −11.1027 for Chinar leaf biochar showing the process is spontaneous. The enthalpy changes of Chinar leaf powder and its biochar are negative (−20.6611) and positive (22.72549) indicating exothermic and endothermic processes, respectively. Uptake efficiency (>90%) recorded at an equilibrium time of 30 min shows that Chinar leaf powder and biochar were fast and effective adsorbents for the removal of crystal violet.

Paddy soil and irrigation water are commonly contaminated with hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] near urban industrial areas, thereby threatening the safety of agricultural products and human health. In this study, we develop a porous and high specific area bone char (BC) to support nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and apply it to remediate Cr(VI) pollution in water and paddy soil under anaerobic conditions. The batch experiments reveal that BC/nZVI exhibits a higher removal capacity of 516.7 mg/(g•nZVI) for Cr(VI) than nZVI when normalized to the actual nZVI content, which is 2.8 times that of nZVI; moreover, the highest nZVI utilization is the nZVI loading of 15% (BC/nZVI15). The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of BC/nZVI15 decreases with increasing pH (4 – 10). Coexisting ions (phosphate and carbonate) and humic acid can inhibit the removal of Cr(VI) with BC/nZVI15. Additionally, BC exhibits a strong advantage in promoting Cr(VI) removal by nZVI compared to the widely used biochar and activated carbon. Our results demonstrate that reduction and coprecipitation are the dominant Cr(VI) removal mechanisms. Furthermore, BC/nZVI15 shows a significantly higher reduction and removal efficiency as well as a strong anti-interference ability for Cr(VI) in paddy soil, as compared to nZVI. These findings provide a new effective material for remediating Cr(VI) pollution from water and soil.

The application of decomposable organic residues such as manure and crop litter is generally beneficial to earthworms. There is an emerging interest in applying biochar, a carbonaceous product of pyrolysis, to temperate agricultural soils. The slow decomposition rate of biochar, which also contains ash and combustion byproducts, could be detrimental to earthworms. The objective of this study was to describe the earthworm populations in biochar-amended soils on a dairy farm in the St. Francis River watershed, Quebec, Canada. Earthworms were collected from replicated field plots under cereal production. Site A received three wood-based biochar types at two application rates (5 and 10 t ha-1 biochar) plus an unamended control, while Site B received wood-based biochar (7.5 t ha-1 biochar), dairy cattle slurry (10 t ha-1 manure), or a combination of the biochar and manure rates plus an unamended control. Earthworms were collected by hand sorting and formaldehyde expulsion from soil pits. Three species, Aporrectodea turgida, Aporrectodea tuberculata, and Lumbricus rubellus, were found at the sites, and Aporrectodea was the dominant genus. Biochar sources, rates, and application with dairy slurry did not affect the earthworm population, which had 52–218 individuals m-2 in 2010 and 4–96 individuals m-2 in 2011. The seasonal variation in earthworm population may be due to flooding in the spring of 2011, which apparently interfered with earthworm reproduction. The similarity in earthworm abundance and biomass in plots with and without wood-based biochar leads to the conclusion that earthworm populations are stable in biochar-amended soils in this cold, humid temperate region.

Agricultural constraints on sandy soil are poor chemical characteristics and low biological activity resulting in the soil becoming less productive to be planted. One of the efforts to improve the quality of sandy soil are application of mycorrhizae and a soil ameliorant. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mycorrhizae and a soil ameliorant on soil chemical characteristics and soil biological activity. The experiment was arranged using a Complete Randomized Design that had two factors. The first factor (1) was mycorrhizae dose, without mycorrhizae (M0) and six spores of mycorrhizae/plant (M1), and the second factor (2) was types of soil ameliorant, without ameliorant (S0), cow dung (S1), rock phosphate (S2), biochar (S3), cow dung–rock phosphate (S4), cow dung–biochar (S5), and rock phosphate–biochar (S6). The results indicated that combination of six spores mycorrhizae/plant–cow dung 60 tons ha−1–biochar 25 tons ha−1 (M1S5) increased soil organic carbon (SOC) (235%), available P (675%), cation exchange capacity (CEC) (216%), total glomalin (101%), and easily extracted glomalin (69%), decreased exchangeable sodium percentage (66%), and increased absolutely for root infection and spore density than without mycorrhizae and a soil ameliorant (control). The lowest of SOC in non-mycorrhizae and rock phosphate, available P, CEC, root infection, spore density were found on the control, but the lowest of total glomalin and easily extracted glomalin were found on non-mycorrhizae–rock phosphate. The application of mycorrhizae, cow dung, and biochar improved the sandy soil characteristics.

Owing to its effectiveness and being environment-friendly, biochar has been used for adsorbing and immobilizing pollutants in soil in recent years of studies, which is also suitable for manganese pollution in soil caused by manganese mining and processing activities. In this research, alkali-modified pomelo biochar (MBC) was regarded as a soil amendment, and the improvement of soil physicochemical properties and Mn2+ sorption and transport in soil by modifying with MBC were investigated. In incubation experiment, 0–10% (w/w) MBC addition amount significantly improved the physicochemical properties of soil. Due to the amelioration of soil physicochemical properties along with the oxygen-containing functional groups and the developed pore structure of MBC itself, the adsorption capacity of MBC modification soil towards Mn2+ (qe) was enhanced in batch adsorption experiment, and qe increased by 10–108% when MBC ratio grew from 0 to 10% at 300 mg·L−1 Mn2+ solution. In column transport experiment, the Mn2+ retention rate climbed by 13–106% from 0 to 10% MBC addition proportion when adopted the MBC filling way that placed MBC on the soil upper layer, and the reinforced restriction on Mn2+ transport in soil amended with MBC might ascribe to the enhanced qe as well as the reduced saturated hydraulic conductivity. These results proved that MBC effectively augmented adsorption ability and suppressed transport of Mn2+ in soil, which could provide an available mind on prevention and remediation of soil Mn contamination.

Objectives: Among various radioactive contaminants, radioactive cesium is one of the most harmful radionuclides that causes human health issues due to its high emission of gamma-ray, high solubility, high mobility, high fission yield, and long half-life. Different kinds of adsorbents have been developed for the removal of cesium from radioactive wastewater. Especially, biochar has attracted great attention as a potential adsorbent in the treatment of pollutants and for water purification. In addition, Prussian blue is a cubic lattice structure that contains a cage size similar to the hydrated cesium ionic radius, indicating it can selectively remove cesium ions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the cesium adsorption performance of synthesized Prussian blue-immobilized coffee ground biochar (PB-CGBC) under various experimental conditions for cesium removal from radioactive wastewater.Methods: After wasted coffee ground was washed and dried, it was heated at 400℃ with 10℃/min of heating rate and 5 h of retention time in a furnace with little or no available air. The PB-CGBC was synthesized using a facile co-precipitation method. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, field emission-transmission electron microscope, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and zeta potential analyzer were used to analyze physico-chemical characteristics and surface structure of the synthesized adsorbents. The kinetic and equilibrium experiments of cesium adsorption on PB-CGBC were carried out and the effect of pH, temperature, initial cesium concentration, and contact time were also investigated in a batch system.Results and Discussion: The characteristic analysis clearly confirmed the successful synthesis of PB-CGBC, indicating its abundant functional groups and special surface structure. In the batch study, it was found that the cesium adsorption onto the PB-CGBC was exothermic nature. The Elovich kinetic model and Temkin isotherm also provided a good correlation with the cesium adsorption reaction onto the PB-CGBC. The maximum adsorption capacity of PB-CGBC for cesium was 129.57 mg/g at 15℃ and pH 8 at 40 mM of an initial cesium concentration, which was one of the highest values among those of previously reported adsorbents.Conclusions: In this study, the PB-CGBC was synthesized by immobilizing Prussian blue to the surface of coffee ground biochar and successfully applied for the adsorptive removal of cesium ions. Based on the experimental results, the synthesized PB-CGBC can be served as a great adsorbent for treatment of wastewater polluted with radioactive cesium.

Creation of oxygen-containing functional groups on the biochar surface can highly improve its hydrophilicity and amend its behaviour in aquatic systems. Hydrogen peroxide, ozone, potassium permanganate and nitrogen acid were most usually used reagents for the surface oxidation. On the contrary, biochar activation by strong acids can be a costly process at the industrial scale and can raise environmental problems due to the disposal of activated carbon. Hence, there is a need to search for cheaper and cleaner products for the modification of biochar. For this reason, weak acids, such as solution of rhamnolipids or rainfall water solution, can be used. In this study, it was found that lower size biochar particles had higher wettability compared to larger size particles, since it was categorized as slightly hydrophobic (2.67 s). Steam of average concentration of rhamnolipid solution (20 mg/l) had the highest effect on the enhancement of biochar surface area (15.2 m2/g) and satisfactory impact on the reduction of initial hydrophobicity (4210 s). Biochar modified with increased concentration of nitric acid solution (from 65 to 20%) wettability was in accordance with the increase of surface area (from 4210 to 3907 s and from 1.27 to 4.36 m2/g).

Here we addressed the remediation of a soil severely contaminated by Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn. In this regard, we tested the capacity of magnesite and biochar, inorganic and organic soil amendments, respectively, to reduce metal availability and improve soil properties. To this end, 1-kg pots containing the polluted soil were amended with either magnesite or biochar. Metal availability and soil properties were then measured at days 15 and 75. Also, to evaluate the impact of the two treatments on plant growth, we conducted experimental trials with Brassica juncea L. and compost addition. Both amendments, but particularly magnesite, markedly decreased metal availability. Soil properties were also enhanced, as reflected by increases in the cation exchangeable capacity. However, plant growth was inhibited by magnesite amendment. This observation could be attributable to an increase in soil pH and cation exchange capacity as well as a high Mg concentration. In contrast, biochar increased biomass production but decreased the quantity of metals recovered when the plants are harvested. In conclusion, on the basis of our results, we propose magnesite as a suitable approach for stabilizing contaminated soils (or even spoil heaps) where revegetation is not a priority. In contrast, although biochar has a lower, but still significant, capacity to immobilize metals, it can be used to restore natural soil properties and thus favor plant growth.

Soil pollution by metal(loid)s is an important issue in Europe, as it causes environmental and health problems. Therefore, remediation of these areas is needed. The success of phytoremediation process will depend on the ability of plants to implement, which can require the addition of amendments to the soil in order to improve soil conditions, immobilize pollutant and thus ameliorate plant growth. Amendments that can be used are biochar, activated carbon and redmuds, all of which have previously shown positive outcomes. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of several amendments (biochars, activated carbons and redmuds) on (i) the soil physico-chemical properties of a former mine technosol contaminated by As and Pb, (ii) As and Pb immobilization and (iii) the growth of Trifolium repens. Results showed that amendment addition could ameliorate soil conditions, by reducing soil acidity (pH increased by 1.2 to 1.7 units) and immobilizing pollutants (85 to 99% of Pb immobilized); and improve plant growth (dry weight increased 1.5 to 2.5 times). However, not all amendments were beneficial to the soil and plant. For instance, the L27 activated carbon acidified soil pH, mobilized As and lowered plant growth. This study has allowed us to conclude that amendment effect is dependent on soil type, metal(loid)s and amendment properties, and it is thus necessary to choose the right amendment. Finally, amendments could be combined for better outcomes.

Imidazolinones are a group of herbicides with high potential of leaching and long half-lives that are posing a threat to water resources’ quality especially in tropical areas. Biochar, a carbon-rich bio-sorbent, has shown its ability to stabilise organic substances in soils and therefore, potentially is able to reduce their leaching. Biochar is a sustainable and cost-effective material which can be produced from locally available wastes. This work, for the first time, evaluated the biochar’s effects on leaching of two polar members of imidazolinones family namely imazapic and imazapyr, and also Onduty® which is a mixture of these two herbicides, in heavy soil of tropical paddy fields. Leaching columns accompanied with artificial irrigation were used during the laboratory experiment. The herbicides were extracted from both collected leachates and soil columns. Soil amendment with designed biochars significantly reduced the herbicides’ leaching percentages. Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) and rice husk (RH) were used as pyrolysis feedstock. About 16% of the applied imazapic was leached out from biochar-free soil. For RH and OPEFB biochar-amended soils, the amounts were 4.3% and 3.6%, respectively. The highest percentage of imazapyr leached out from non-amended soil was (14.2%) followed by RH (4.0%) and OPEFB (2.8%) in biochar-amended soils. Also, 15.2% of the applied Onduty® was leached from non-amended soil. Adding RH and OPEFB biochars could reduce the herbicide leaching to 4.2% and 3.0%, respectively. Soil amended with biochars retained the higher percentages of the herbicides in top 7.5 cm depths. The media sorption capacities were negatively correlated to the amounts of herbicides leached out from soils but positively to the amounts of the herbicides remaining in the soil. Total amount of herbicides adsorbed by biochars-amended soils was more than 95%. Cation/water bridging ion exchange, ligand exchange, electrostatic attraction, and hydrophobic partitioning are the main ways imidazolinones can be adsorbed to soil. It was concluded that biochar application has the potential to reduce polar imidazolinones’ leaching and their environmental pollution. The custom-engineered biochars can specifically control the pesticides transfer and then can certainly enhance the biochars’ commercial values for their applications in the environment.
