Hydrogen energy has long been recognized as a clean alternative to conventional fossil fuels, which can be applied in a wide range of transportation and power generation applications. The rational design and engineering of high-performance and robust catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) shows not a great significance but a challenge for efficient electrochemical water splitting. Herein, a new type of Ni-based Ni-ABDC precursor has been obtained, which leads to the formation of N-doped porous carbon nanomaterials uniformly coated with well-proportioned bimetallic AgNi alloys via a stepwise strategy. To their credit, all samples of AgNi/NC-X are structurally calcined from the pristine AgNi-ABDC-X by tuning the different concentration of AgNO3, which means all of them maintain the vermicelli-like morphology compared with Ni-ABDC. The series of AgNi/NC-X materials can be regarded as effective electrocatalysts for HER both in acidic and alkaline media, but an acid-leaching phenomenon is observed. Among them, the as-prepared AgNi/NC-2 exhibits a low overpotential of 103 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 and decent durability with a high retention rate of 90.9% after 10 h in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The compelling HER properties of AgNi/NC-2 can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the hierarchical carbon materials, partial N-doping and abundant AgNi alloys. Meanwhile, this study provides a practicable method for the development of efficient HER electrocatalysts for energy applications, which can be conveniently prepared through the reasonable introduction of active components in the crystalline inorganic-organic precursors.

Adsorptive removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater is very important, and the key is the development of efficient sorbents. In this work, oxygenated alkynyl carbon materials (OACMs) were synthesized via mechanochemical reaction of CaC2 and a carbonate (CaCO3, Na2CO3, or NaHCO3) at ambient temperature. The resultant OACMs are micro mesoporous carbon nanomaterials with high specific area (>648 m2 g−1), highly crosslinked texture, and rich alkynyl and oxygenated groups. The OACMs exhibit excellent Hg(II) adsorption due to the soft acid-soft base interaction between alkynyl and Hg(II), and OACM-3 derived from CaC2 and NaHCO3 has the saturated Hg(II) adsorbance of 483.9 mg g−1 along with good selectivity and recyclability. The adsorption is mainly chemisorption following the Langmuir mode. OACM-3 also shows high adsorbance for other heavy metal ions, e.g. 256.6 mg g−1 for Pb(II), 232.4 mg g−1 for Zn(II), and 198.7 mg g−1 for Cu(II). This work expands the mechnochemical reaction of CaC2 with carbonates and possibly other oxyanionic salts, provides a new synthesis approach for functional alkynyl carbon materials with excellent adsorption performance for heavy metal ions, as well as a feasible approach for CO2 resource utilization.

Heterostructure engineering of electrocatalysts provides a fascinating platform to reasonably manipulate the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials and further improve their catalytic efficiency for water electrolysis. However, it still remains a huge challenge to construct well-designed core-shell heterostructured catalysts and identify the key role of components for synergistic catalysis. Herein, a melted polymeric salt tactics was innovatively developed to synthesize heterostructured Ni@Ni(OH)2 core-shell nanomaterials supported on porous carbon (named Ni@Ni(OH)2/PC), wherein well-defined Ni(OH)2-Ni heterostructure plays a pivotal role in improving electrocatalytic activity for water reduction and oxidation. Besides, the stable porous carbon support functions as a highway for continuous electron transfer between Ni and Ni(OH)2, and simultaneously enables the full exposure of accessible active sites. The fabricated Ni@Ni(OH)2/PC exhibits outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic performance for overall water splitting (ƞ10 = 1.55 V) with a good long-time stability. This work sheds new light on the design of engineering heterostructure of active bifunctional electrocatalysts for efficient energy conversion system.

The scaled-up synthesis of organic-free monolayer nanomaterials is highly desirable, especially in obtaining green energy by electrocatalysis. In this study, a method for the scaled-up synthesis of the series of monolayer layered double hydroxides (LDHs) without the addition of organic solvents is reported via the separate nucleation and aging steps process. The resulting monolayer LDHs with the thicknesses of less than 1 nm showed a narrow thickness distribution. X-ray absorption fine-structure revealed that monolayer NiFe-LDH nanosheets have a number of oxygen and metal vacancies defects. As a practical application, monolayer NiFe-LDH nanosheets containing defects showed an enhanced electrocatalytic water oxidation activity compared with that of bulk NiFe-LDH. Density functional theory calculations uncovered that excellent catalytic activity is attributed to vacancies defects. The proposed method is an economical and universally applicable strategy for the scaled-up production of monolayer LDHs.

Seeking for extremely active and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts towards the overall water splitting possesses a strategic significance on the development of sustainable and clean energy for the replacement of fossil fuels. Ir-based nanomaterials are deemed as one of the most high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts while the hydrogen evolution reaction performance is unfavorable. In this work, we report a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of N-doped graphene anchored Ir nanoparticles (Ir/N-rGO) with ultrasmall particle size (∼2.0 nm). Apart from the predictably superior OER performance, the resultant Ir/N-rGO also displays excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, requiring merely 76 and 260 mV overpotentials to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm-2 towards HER and OER, respectively. When applied as the bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting, Ir/N-rGO needs a lower overpotential (1.74 V) to achieve a current density of 50 mA cm-2 in alkaline solution, exceeding that of Pt/C and RuO2 couple (1.85 V). Thus, the as-fabricated Ir/N-rGO has a commendable prospect in the practical application of alkaline water electrocatalysis.

Synthetic two-dimensional (2D) mono-elemental crystals, namely X-enes, have recently emerged as a new frontier for atomically thin nanomaterials with on-demand properties. Among X-enes, antimonene, the β-phase allotrope of antimony, is formed by atoms arranged in buckled hexagonal rings bearing a comparatively higher environmental stability with respect to other players of this kind. However, the exploitation of monolayer or few-layer antimonene and other 2D materials in novel opto-electronic devices is still hurdled by the lack of scalable processes. Here, we demonstrated the viability of a bottom-up process for the epitaxial growth of antimonene-like nanocrystals (ANCs), based on a Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) process, assisted by gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on commensurate (1 1 1)-terminated Ge surfaces. The growth mechanism was investigated by large- and local-area microstructural analysis, revealing that the etching of germanium, catalyzed by the Au NPs, led to the ANCs growth on the exposed Ge (1 1 1) planes. As a supportive picture, ab-initio calculations rationalized this epitaxial relationship in terms of compressively strained β-phase ANCs. Our process could pave the way to the realization of large-area antimonene layers by a deposition process compatible with the current semiconductor manufacturing technology.

The effect of gold nanoparticles supported on V2O5/TiO2 nanomaterials prepared by different routes and its activity in the CO oxidation at low temperature were studied. The catalysts were characterized by N2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This study showed that the sol-gel Au-V2O5/TiO2 material exhibited higher catalytic activity after a thermal treatment at 400 °C in hydrogen than Au-V2O5/NT nanotubes, Au-V2O5/P25 Evonik and V2O5/TiO2 nanomaterials. The sol-gel Au-V2O5/TiO2 catalyst was also more active than Au/TiO2. These results could be explained by the fact that the gold species (Au° and Au1+) improved the interaction between vanadium species and TiO2, allowing high vanadium oxidation states (from V3+ to V5+) through a charge transfer effect between the support surface and Au-VOx reactive species; the presence of monovanadate and Ti3+ species led to remarkable activity in the CO oxidation from 0 °C in comparison with Au/TiO2.

2D nanomaterials are widely investigated for biomedical applications, attributed to their large specific surface area, high therapeutic loading capacity, and unique optical, thermal, and/or electronic characteristics. Lattice defects affect the theranostic performance of 2D nanomaterials significantly by altering their electronic properties and chemical binding. Recent investigations have shown that defect-rich 2D nanomaterials are capable of enhancing tumor treatment through efficient drug delivery, photothermal and photodynamic therapies (PTT and PDT), and improving diagnostics via computed tomography (CT), photoacoustic and magnetic resonance imaging. This review summarizes recent progresses, including synthesis, characterization approach, and applications of defect-engineered 2D nanomaterials that are potentially useful in cancer treatment. The expert opinions are also proposed as the conclusion.

The need to develop specific-morphology nanomaterials to produce dimethyl ether (DME), a promissory alternative fuel, by the catalytic methanol dehydration has triggered extensive research to synthesize novel materials. In this work mesoporous Al-MCM-41 nanospheres with variable size (35−90 nm) were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The size of the Al-MCM-41 nanospheres was controlled by adjustable NaOH/TEOS ratio (0.2−0.5). The Al-MCM-41 nanospheres were characterized by TPD, TEM, XRD, EDX, XPS and N2-physisorption. According to the characterization results the Al ions were successfully incorporated in the MCM-41 framework and the Al-MCM-41 nanospheres showed hexagonal and mesoporous structure. Additionally, it was observed that the higher the NaOH/TEOS ratio the smaller size of the nanosphere and, smaller Al-MCM-41 nanospheres presented more amount of medium acidic sites on its surface. The catalytic activity results showed that all samples tested reached 100% of selectivity towards DME. The smallest Al-MCM-41 nanospheres achieved 78% of DME yield at 300 °C and good catalytic activity performance below to 300 °C. The stability of the fresh and regenerated Al-MCM-41 nanospheres was evaluated for 48 h time-on-stream. High values of DME yield (> 60%) were maintained during 48 h time-on-stream showing the possibility for recycling the material.

An array of new nanomaterials have been designed to mimic the catalyst characteristics of natural enzymes (termed "nanozymes"), which connects an essential bridge between nanotechnology and biomedical science. Thus, the research on nanozymes has increased dramatically and a new multidisciplinary field has emerged in recent years named nanozymology. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (e.g., Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, MIONs) have revealed to perform an enzyme-like activity with pH-dependent behavior. These nanozymes can catalytically decompose H2O2 into products (e.g., H2O and O2) under mild pH conditions mimicking enzyme-like bioactivity. More importantly, under mildly acidic conditions, they can use H2O2 as the substrate for producing highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) through the generation of hydroxyl radicals ( OH), displaying peroxidase-like activity. Therefore, here we designed and developed a novel class of hybrid nanocatalysts based on the conjugation of GOx (natural enzyme) and MIONs (inorganic nanozyme) stabilized by a biocompatible polymer shell of carboxymethyl cellulose. They created supramolecular vesicle-like nanostructures that were tested for killing brain cancer cells (U-87 MG) in vitro, where they proved anticancer activity attributed to ferroptosis-induced cell death. These hybrid nanostructures performed as a cascade of integrated nanocatalysts: a) GOx worked as the starting catalyst, where the glucose in the medium generated H2O2; b) next, H2O2 was catalyzed by the downstream MION nanozymes (Fe3O4) via Fenton-like reactions releasing toxic species (ROS), which caused the cancer cell death. Remarkably, this nanozyme-induced cell death was more pronounced in brain cancer cells ascribed to the more acidic microenvironment than on healthy cells.

Lanthanide ions doped luminescent materials are widely studied for latent fingerprint detection. However, most of these materials are synthesized at very high temperatures and use UV C light for visualization, which is harmful to eye, skin, etc. Herein, the Gd0.95Eu0.05PO4 nanorods synthesized by a simple co-precipitation method at 185 °C were reported for latent fingerprint visualization under 395 nm light. The Gd0.95Eu0.05PO4 nanomaterial has monoclinic crystal structure and shows rod-shaped morphology. Further, these Gd0.95Eu0.05PO4 nanorods exhibit excellent photoluminescence properties and strong fuchsia emission under UV light. These nanorods have been employed for developing latent fingerprints on various porous and non-porous substrates by the powder dusting technique, which exhibits clear and well defined details with high contrast, selectivity and sensitivity under 395 nm UV light. Latent fingerprints developed after 72 h of their deposition also show clear contrast with these nanorods. Therefore, the Gd0.95Eu0.05PO4 nanorods can be used for latent fingerprint visualization applications.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has presented its inherent application value in cancer treatment. Nevertheless, single-functional photothermal materials cannot meet the precise diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Therefore, it is important to design a nanocomposite that has both high therapeutic efficiency and multimodal imaging capabilities. In our work, a new nanostructure of gold nanorods (AuNRs) with silver shells decorated by BaGdF5:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoparticle was synthesized by a simple way. The biostability of AuNRs is increased by coating with silver shells, and the AuNR@Ag nanoparticles can be used as excellent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probe. Moreover, the modification of BaGdF5:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoparticles provides the possibility of real-time optical imaging of the tumor area. Under the irradiation of NIR laser, the AuNR@Ag/BaGdF5:Yb3+,Er3+ nanocomposites (NCs) have strong upconversion emission and excellent photothermal conversion efficiency. Meanwhile, the NCs show low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility in MTT cytotoxicity test. Moreover, the NCs are also exceptional contrast agents for CT imaging. For in vitro photothermal therapy test, NCs show excellent killing efficiency on tumor cells. Therefore, the multifaceted research of AuNR@Ag/BaGdF5:Yb3+,Er3+ multifunctional nanomaterials provides a break for high-efficiency tumor photothermal therapy and multimodal imaging.

Transition metal oxides (TMO) bring a novel direction for the development of energy store materials due to their excellent stability. They not only have high capacity and good cycle performance, but also are cheap and easily available. Zinc oxide (ZnO) as an important part of TMO have gradually attracted attention in the research of electrochemistry. ZnO, as a metal semiconductor with the advantages of wide band gap, possesses high ion migration rate, good chemical stability, simple preparation and low cost, and is widely used in various fields. However, poor conductivity, low permittivity and quick capacity decays quickly impede the commercial application of these electrodes. In recent years, in order to improve the structural stability, ion diffusion and conductivity of zinc oxides-based anodes, various strategies have been raised, such as structural design, surface modification and composition control. In this paper, the recent advances of zinc oxides-based materials for batteries and hybrid supercapacitors (SCs) were introduced. We comprehensively reviewed the prepared process, reaction mechanism and electrochemical performance and discussed the shortcoming of zinc oxides-based nanomaterials. In particular, several insights toward the future research development, practical applications and commercialization of energy storage devices are also proposed for improving the performance of zinc oxides-based materials.

The assembly of donor–acceptor molecules via charge transfer (CT) interactions gives rise to highly ordered nanomaterials with appealing electronic properties. Here, we present the synthesis and bulk co-assembly of pyrene (Pyr) and naphthalenediimide (NDI) functionalized oligodimethylsiloxanes (oDMS) of discrete length. We tune the donor–acceptor interactions by connecting the pyrene and NDI to the same oligomer, forming a heterotelechelic block molecule (NDI-oDMSPyr), and to two separate oligomers, giving Pyr and NDI homotelechelic block molecules (Pyr-oDMS and NDI-oDMS). Liquid crystalline materials are obtained for binary mixtures of Pyr-oDMS and NDI-oDMS, while crystallization of the CT dimers occurred for the heterotelechelic NDI-oDMS-Pyr block molecule. The synergy between crystallization and phase-segregation coupled with the discrete length of the oDMS units allows for perfect order and sharp interfaces between the insulating siloxane and CT layers composed of crystalline CT dimers. We were able to tune the lamellar domain spacing and donor–acceptor CT interactions by applying pressures up to 6 GPa on the material, making the system promising for soft-material nanotechnologies. These results demonstrate the importance of the molecular design to tune the CT interactions and stability of a CT material., A robust, soft material held together by charge transfer interactions is developed. The nanostructure dimensions and material properties can be tuned by molecular design or pressure.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials are receiving increasing attention due to their ability to directly converting heat to electricity. They are used to harvest electrical energy from the wasted heat in order to increase the efficiency of global energy. Polymer-based TE materials are particularly fascinating to wearable and mobile devices due to their low density, good flexibility, and low toxicity. This review summarizes the recent breakthroughs and optimization strategies of polymer-based TE materials. Among a large number of different organic TE materials, those with remarkable TE performance are selected and divided into three categories, which are poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) derivatives, carbon nanotube/conductive polymer composites, and inorganic semiconductive nanomaterial/polymer composites. The effect of components and structures on the power factor are presented and discussed. Finally, some challenges are described and suggestions are provided for preparing the next-generation of polymer-based materials with high TE performance.

Owing to their high surface area, stable structure and easy fabrication, composite nanomaterials with encapsulation structures have attracted considerable research interest as sensing materials to detect volatile organic compounds. Herein, a hydrothermal route is designed to prepare foam shaped α-MoO3@SnS2 nanosheets that exhibit excellent sensing performance for triethylamine (TEA). The developed sensor, based on α-MoO3@SnS2 nanosheets, displays a high response of 114.9 for 100 ppm TEA at a low working temperature of 175 °C with sensitivity higher than many other reported sensors. In addition, the device shows a wide concentration detection range (from 500 ppb to 500 ppm), good stability after exposure to air for 80 days, and excellent selectivity. The superior sensing characteristics of the developed sensor are attributed to the high crystallinity of α-MoO3/SnS2, excessive and accessible active sites provided by the good permeability of porous SnS2 shells, and the excellent conductivity of the encapsulation heterojunction structure. Thus, the foam shaped α-MoO3@SnS2 nanosheets presented herein have promising practical applications in TEA gas sensing devices.

The rational design of nanozymes with superior activities is essential for improving bioassay performances. Herein, nitrogen and boron co-doped graphene nanoribbons (NB-GNRs) are prepared by a hydrothermal method using urea as the nitrogen source and boric acid as the boron source, respectively. The introduction of co-doped and edge structures provides high defects and active sites. The resultant NB-GNRs nanozymes show superior peroxidase-like activities to nitrogen-doped and boron-doped counterparts due to the synergistic effects. By taking advantage of their peroxidase-like activities, NB-GNRs are used for the first time to develop enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of interleukin-6. The biosensors exhibit a high performance with a linear range from 0.001 ng/mL to 1000 ng/mL and a detection limit of 0.3 pg/mL. Due to their low cost and high stability, the proposed nanomaterials show great promise in biocatalysis, immunoassay development and environmental monitoring.

Novel carbon based “X-type” graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with azulenes were designed for applications in nonlinear optics in the present work, and the second order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of those X-type GNRs were predicted using the sum-over-states (SOS) model. The GNRs with edge states are feasibly polarized. The effects of zigzag edges on the NLO properties of GNRs are scrutinized by passivation, and the electronic structures of GNRs are modulated with heteroatoms at the zigzag edges for improved stability and NLO properties. Those nanomaterials were further functionalized with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups (NH2/NO2) to enhance the NLO responses, and the connection of those functional groups at the azulene ends play a determinant role in the enhancement of the NLO properties of those X-type nanoribbons, e.g., the static first hyperpolarizability (〈β0〉) changes from −783.23 × 10−30 esu to −1421.98 × 10−30 esu. The mechanism of such an enhancement has been investigated. Through two-dimensional second order NLO spectra simulations, particularly besides the strong electro-optical Pockels effect and optical rectification responses, strong electronic sum frequency generations and difference frequency generations are observed in those GNRs. The strong second order NLO responses of those GNRs in the visible light region bring about potential applications of these carbon nanomaterials in nonlinear nanophotonic devices and biological nonlinear optics.

The high energy demand we currently face in society and the subsequent large consumption of fossil fuels cause its depletion and increase the pollution levels. The quest for the production of clean energy from renewable and sustainable sources remains open. The conversion of solar energy into hydrogen via the water-splitting process, assisted by photoresponsive semiconductor catalysts, is one of the most promising technologies. Significant progress has been made on water splitting in the past few years and a variety of photocatalysts active not only under ultra-violet (UV) light but especially with the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum have been developed. Layered double hydroxides (LDH)-based materials have emerged as a promising class of nanomaterials for solar energy applications owing to their unique layered structure, compositional flexibility, tunable bandgaps, ease of synthesis and low manufacturing costs. This review covers the most recent research dedicated to LDH materials for photocatalytic water-splitting applications and encompasses a range of synthetic strategies and post-modifications used to enhance their performance. Moreover, we provide a thorough discussion of the experimental conditions crucial to obtaining improved photoactivity and highlight the impact of some specific parameters, namely, catalysts loading, cocatalysts, sacrificial agents, and irradiation sources. This review provides the necessary tools to select the election technique for adequately enhancing the photoactivity of LDH and modified LDH-based materials and concludes with a critical summary that outlines further research directions.

White-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) possess many merits, such as high efficiency and stability. Developing cost-effective, environmentally friendly, high-performance luminophores to achieve high-quality, full-spectrum, white lighting is of great importance to the construction and progress of WLEDs. In this work, solid-state, highly luminescent orange-emitting nanoclusters (MgCl2-Lys-Ag/Au NCs) were prepared via the salt-induced precipitation of Lys-Ag/Au NCs from solution, which showed a high absolute quantum yield of 44.5%. A cyan-emitting metal-organic framework (MOF)-like nanomaterial (named Fe@TAOH) was also prepared by the self-assembly of the coordination compound of Fe3+ and TAOH acted upon by H3PO4 via H-bonding and π-π stacking interactions, which showed an emission peak at 485 nm and an absolute quantum yield of 21.7%. The potential application of the two facile-synthesis, low toxicity, and highly luminescent materials in WLEDs was investigated. The WLEDs was constructed by coating powdered Fe@TAOH and MgCl2-Lys-Ag/Au NCs samples on commercial GaN LED chip with 365 nm emissions, and it exhibited acceptable white light characteristics with a CIE color coordinates and a color rendering index (CRI) of (0.28, 0.34) and 79.6, respectively, implying good prospects in the field of WLEDs.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) represent a versatile core structure for the design of functional nanosystems of biomedical interest. However, the development of selective methodologies for the site-controlled functionalization of the nanotubes at specific sites is not an easy task. This study aims to accomplish a procedure for the site-selective/specific, “pin-point”, functionalization of HNTs with polydopamine (HNTs@PDA). This goal was achieved, at pH 6.5, by exploiting the basicity of ZnO nanoparticles anchored on the HNTs external surface (HNTs@ZnO) to induce a punctual polydopamine polymerization and coating. The morphology and the chemical composition of the nanomaterial was demonstrated by several techniques. Turbidimetric analysis showed that PDA coating affected the aqueous stability of HNTs@PDA compared to both HNTs@ZnO and HNTs. Notably, hyperthermia studies revealed that the nanomaterial induced a local thermic rise, up to 50 °C, under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Furthermore, secondary functionalization of HNTs@PDA by selective grafting of biotin onto the PDA coating followed by avidin binding was also accomplished.

Nanotherapy based on thermochemotherapy has boomed as a promising alternative for oncotherapy due to the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. However, a lack of self-targeting capacity prevents nanotherapy from efficiently accumulating in tumor tissue and internalizing into tumor cells, resulting in a suboptimal therapeutic effect. To overcome these bottlenecks, a kind of methotrexate (MTX)-soybean phospholipid (SPC) inclusion complex (MTX-SPC)-modified graphene oxide (CGO) nanotherapy (CGO-MTX-SPC) is constructed by CGO nanosheets as a supporter for MTX-SPC, thereby realizing active-targeting and synergistic thermochemotherapy. As an FDA-approved chemotherapeutic drug, MTX can be regarded as a tumor-targeting enhancer against the folate receptor on account of its similar structure to folic acid (FA). The fabricated CGO-MTX-SPC has a sheet shape with a size of ca. 109 nm and tumor microenvironment-responsive on-demand drug release. It is worth noting that the physiological stability of CGO-MTX-SPC is better than that of CGO while displaying an improved photothermal effect. In addition, CGO-MTX-SPC can specifically recognize tumor cells and then achieve on-demand drug burst release by dual stimuli of internal lysosomal acidity and an external laser. Moreover, in vivo experimental results further demonstrate that CGO-MTX-SPC displays significant enrichment at the tumor location by active targeting mechanisms due to the introduction of MTX-SPC, endowing the synergistic thermochemotherapy effect upon 808 nm laser irradiation and almost thorough tumor elimination while significantly erasing undesirable side effects. Taken together, the design idea of our nanotherapy not only provides a potential tumor-targeting therapeutic strategy but also broadens the drug payload method of two-dimensional nanomaterials.

The development of high-efficiency photocatalysts is the primary goal in the field of photocatalytic antibacterial research. In this work, the GaN:ZnO solid solution nanoparticles (NPs) photocatalyst with strong visible absorption and large specific surface area was synthesized via the sol-gel and nitridation reaction process. Also, we systematically investigated the removal efficiency of the organic pollutant and antibacterial activity on E. coli and S. aureus. Notably, methylene blue solution could be completely degraded after 100 min of visible light illumination using 2 mg/mL GaN:ZnO catalyst. Moreover, ~94% of the E. coli were inactivated within 120 min, whereas 100% antibacterial activity against S. aureus was achieved after 90 min of visible light illumination mediated by GaN:ZnO NPs. We further explore the potential mechanism of visible light photocatalytic antibacterial activity enhanced by GaN:ZnO NPs photocatalyst. The current work not only provides a new and efficient photocatalytic antibacterial nanomaterial but also demonstrates its promising applications in environmental and biological fields.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted broad attention as a promising method for cancer therapy with less severe side effects than conventional radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgical resection. PTT relies on the photoconversion capacity of photothermal agents (PTAs), and a wide variety of nanomaterials have been employed as PTAs for cancer therapy due to their excellent photothermal properties. The PTAs are systematically or locally administered and become enriched in cancer cells to increase ablation efficiency. In recent years, PTAs and three-dimensional scaffolds have been hybridized to realize the local delivery of PTAs for the repeated ablation of cancer cells. Meanwhile, the composite scaffolds can stimulate the reconstruction and regeneration of the functional tissues and organs after ablation of cancer cells. A variety of composite scaffolds of photothermal nanomaterials have been prepared to combine the advantages of different modalities to maximize their therapeutic efficacy with minimal side effects. The synergistic effects make the composite scaffolds attractive for biomedical applications. This review summarizes these latest advances and discusses the future prospects., Graphical abstract

How to engineer single nanocrystal to achieve multiple functions is still a huge challenge. In this work, a novel highly doped rare earth nanocrystal NaErF4@NaGdF4@NaDyF4 (Er@Gd@Dy) was designed and fabricated, which exhibits various performances by itself, including the longitudinal (T1) and transverse relaxation time (T2) double-mode magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), upconversion luminescence and down-shifting luminescence. Upon irradiation of 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light, the upconverted red light can indirectly activate the photosensitizer Ce6 conjugated on the surface of nanocrystals for photodynamic therapy (PDT). In vivo experiments demonstrate that the nanomaterials can eradicate notably primary tumors without obvious systematic toxicity. In addition, the longitudinal and transverse relaxation rates of Er@Gd@Dy are 24.83 and 319.86 (mmol/L)−1/s, respectively, which are superior to those of the nanocrystals reported previously. Simultaneously, the nanocrystals have the ability to generate NIR-II light located at 1530 nm, favorable in bioimaging in deeper tissues. As a consequence, this new nanoplatform will advance the improvement of multimodal imaging guided tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Carbon dots (CDs) are novel fluorescent nanomaterials with good water solubility, high resistance to photobleaching and low toxicity. While, there are few studies elaborate on the relationship among reaction conditions, properties and applications of CDs. In this study, a series of CDs are synthesized through a one-pot hydrothermal method, and different reaction conditions are carried out to study the influencing factors of CDs properties. As a result, with the increase of temperature and reaction time, the particle size and zeta potential of CDs increased, the maximum emission wavelength red-shifted and the fluorescence quantum yield (QY) improved. Among them, CD3006 has good water solubility and highest QY of 81.4%, which is beneficial for its applications in bioimaging and ion detection. CD3006 is almost nontoxic in cells at a concentration of 500 μg/mL. In addition, the positive charged CD3006 shows nuclear targeting potential because of its combination with DNA through electrostatic interaction in nucleus. The properties of CDs can be greatly enhanced by controlling reaction conditions, and it provides great application prospects.

The rare-earth metal Gd plays an important role in the energy, information, and national defence fields due to its special optical, electrical, magnetic, and catalytic properties. In this study, Gd was purified by direct current (DC) arc plasma, and Gd2O3 nanoparticles were prepared via an integration method using purified Gd. The effects of arc current, melting time, gas pressure, and atmosphere on the purification of Gd by DC arc plasma were investigated. With an increase in the arc current and melting time, the rate of removal of impurities from Gd enhances. Moreover, Gd melting was conducted by H2–Ar arc plasma, which improves the impurity removal rate by increasing the H2 content. High thermal conductivity and chemical activity of the activated H atoms generated by the dissociation of H2 are the main reasons for the significant improvement in the impurity removal rate. The mechanism of Gd purification was analysed based on the above-mentioned experimental results. The as-synthesised Gd2O3 nanoparticles have a uniform spherical structure (average diameter of 32.7 nm), appropriate dispersibility, and high purity. This study provides a new strategy for the integrated purification of metals and preparation of metal/metal-based nanomaterials by DC arc plasma.

Effective colour modulation of upconversion emissions in lanthanide-doped nanomaterials becomes even more important for fundamental and applied research. Herein, on the one hand, by raising the content of doped Yb3+ from 10 mol% to 50 mol%, a significant increase of the red/green emission ratio from 4.0 to 68.2 is observed in K2NaScF6:Yb/Er nanocrystals. This yellow to red colour change is attributed to the increased cross relaxation between Er3+ and Yb3+ caused by the increased Yb3+ amount, 4S3/2 (Er3+) + 2F7/2 (Yb3+) → 4I13/2 (Er3+) + 2F5/2 (Yb3+). On the other hand, the upconversion green and red emission of K2NaScF6:Yb/Er (20/2 mol%) nanocrystals are intensified 10.6 and 8.8 folds, respectively, after an active shell (K2NaScF6:Yb) is epitaxially grown, which are more effective than the 7.4- and 6.4-fold enhancement from an inert shell (K2NaScF6) growth. Moreover, the shell thickness from 2.85 to 9.5 nm through controlling the molar ratio of shell-precursor to core from 1:2 to 3:1 can be easily realized. This study will provide more opportunities for the application of K2NaScF6:Yb/Ln nanoparticles in varied fields such as theranostics, photovoltaics, and photocatalysis.

Based on their characteristics, transition metal layered double hydroxides have been of great scientific interest for their use in supercapacitors. Up until now, severe aggregation and low intrinsic conductivity have been the major hurdles for their application. In this work, nickel–iron sulfide nanosheets (NiFeSx) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized on diatomite using chemical vapor deposition and a two-step hydrothermal method to overcome these challenges. Synthesis of this composite successfully exploits the synergistic effect of multicomponent materials to improve the electrochemical performance. Diatomite is selected as a substrate to provide preferable surroundings for the uniform dispersion of nanomaterial on its surface, which enlarges the active sites that come in contact with the electrolytes, significantly improving the electrochemical properties. Combined with high conductivity and a synchronous sulfurization effect, the NiFeSx@CNTs@MnS@Diatomite electrode delivered a high specific capacitance of 552F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, a good rate capability of 68.4% retention at 10 A g−1, and superior cycling stability of 89.8% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A g−1. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor assembled via NiFeSx@CNTs@MnS@Diatomite and graphene delivered a maximum energy density of 28.9 Wh kg−1 and a maximum power density of 9375 W kg−1 at a potential of 1.5 V. This research lays the groundwork for ideal material preparation as well as a rational design for the electrode material, including property enhancement of diatomite-based material for use in supercapacitors.

As one of the most promising fluorescent nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) have been extensively studied for their fluorescent properties in solution. However, research on the synthesis of multicolor solid-state fluorescence (SSF) CDs (from blue to red) is rarely reported. Herein, we used o-phenylenediamine, m-phenylenediamine and p-phenylenediamine with dithiosalicylic acid (DTSA) in the solvothermal reaction using acetic acid as a solvent to obtain aggregation-induced emissive (AIE) CDs of red (620 nm), green (520 nm), and blue (478 nm), respectively. XPS spectra and TEM image show that with the red-shift of luminescence, the particle size and content of C = O of the CDs gradually increases. Finally, based on the non-matrix solid-state multicolor luminescence characteristics of CDs, the application of white light LED devices is realized. Besides, based on the fat-soluble properties of CDs, fingerprint detection applications are realized.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based cancer diagnostics is an important analytical tool in early detection of cancer. Current work in SERS focuses on plasmonic nanomaterials that suffer from coagulation, selectivity, and adverse biocompatibility when used in vitro, limiting this research to stand-alone biomolecule sensing. Here we introduce a label-free, biocompatible, ZnO-based, 3D semiconductor quantum probe as a pathway for in vitro diagnosis of cancer. By reducing size of the probes to quantum scale, we observed a unique phenomenon of exponential increase in the SERS enhancement up to ~106 at nanomolar concentration. The quantum probes are decorated on a nano-dendrite platform functionalized for cell adhesion, proliferation, and label-free application. The quantum probes demonstrate discrimination of cancerous and non-cancerous cells along with biomolecular sensing of DNA, RNA, proteins and lipids in vitro. The limit of detection is up to a single-cell-level detection., Surface enhanced Raman scattering is a bio-analytical tool and the development and optimisation of probes is an active area of investigation. Here, the authors report on the development and testing of biocompatible semiconductor zinc oxide quantum probes on a platform for cell adhesion and analysis.

We present the creation of a unique nanostructured amorphous/crystalline hybrid silicon material that exhibits surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity. This nanomaterial is an interconnected network of amorphous/crystalline nanospheroids which form a nanoweb structure; to our knowledge this material has not been previously observed nor has it been applied for use as a SERS sensing material. This material is formed using a femtosecond synthesis technique which facilitates a laser plume ion condensation formation mechanism. By fine-tuning the laser plume temperature and ion interaction mechanisms within the plume, we are able to precisely program the relative proportion of crystalline Si to amorphous Si content in the nanospheroids as well as the size distribution of individual nanospheroids and the size of Raman hotspot nanogaps. With the use of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and Crystal Violet (CV) chemical dyes, we have been able to observe a maximum enhancement factor of 5.38 × 106 and 3.72 × 106 respectively, for the hybrid nanomaterial compared to a bulk Si wafer substrate. With the creation of a silicon-based nanomaterial capable of SERS detection of analytes, this work demonstrates a redefinition of the role of nanostructured Si from an inactive to SERS active role in nano-Raman sensing applications.

This tutorial review presents our perspective on designing organic molecules for the functionalization of inorganic nanomaterial surfaces, through the model of an "anchor-functionality" paradigm. This "anchor-functionality" paradigm is a streamlined design strategy developed from a comprehensive range of materials (e.g., lead halide perovskites, II-VI semiconductors, III-V semiconductors, metal oxides, diamonds, carbon dots, silicon, etc.) and applications (e.g., light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, lasers, photonic cavities, photocatalysis, fluorescence imaging, photo dynamic therapy, drug delivery, etc.). The structure of this organic interface modifier comprises two key components: anchor groups binding to inorganic surfaces and functional groups that optimize their performance in specific applications. To help readers better understand and utilize this approach, the roles of different anchor groups and different functional groups are discussed and explained through their interactions with inorganic materials and external environments.

The quest to reduce transport resistance in separations using nanomaterials has led to considerable interest in nanoscale adsorbents and ultrathin membranes. It is now established that interfacial resistance limits the performance of such nanosized materials; however, the origin of this resistance is uncertain. While it is associated with surface pore blockages and distortions in some materials, its existence even in ideal materials is largely putative. Here, we report equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations with ideal zeolite-based nanosheets, indicating the transport resistance to be entirely distributed within the solid, without contribution from an interfacial effect. We demonstrate the presence of an internal entry region over which fluid decorrelation occurs, and in which the local transport coefficient inside the crystal is nonuniform and position-dependent, increasing to the uniform value in the bulk material at larger distances. Our EMD-based diffusivity profiles within the nanomaterial enable us to unequivocally determine the entry length, and reveal an internal excess resistance, frequently assumed to be an interfacial resistance, due to significant reduction of the internal transport coefficient in the entrance and exit regions. A decrease in the entry length with loading in PON zeolite nanosheets is seen. We demonstrate a reduction in external resistance in the external bulk chambers used in simulations, triggered by the interplay of incomplete decorrelation in the nanosheet and periodic boundary conditions imposed on the system comprising the nanosheet and surrounding bulk reservoirs when the nanosheet thickness is less than the entry length. Our analysis of the transport dynamics within the nanosheet demonstrates that, at least for ideal systems, decomposition of the inhomogeneous diffusivity-based internal resistance into an interfacial and a uniform transport coefficient-based internal contribution is not appropriate for finite-sized systems. Our results will enable the improved design of nanoscale membranes and materials for applications in separation and other processes.

Among iron oxide phases, magnetite Fe3O4 is often the preferred one for nanotechnological and biomedical applications because of its high saturation magnetization and low toxicity. Although there are several synthetic routes that attempt to reach magnetite nanoparticles NPs , they are usually referred as IONPs iron oxide NPs due to the great difficulty in obtaining the monophasic and stoichiometric Fe3O4 phase. Added to this problem is the common increase of size shape polydispersity when larger NPs D gt; 20 nm are synthesized. An unequivocal correlation between a nanomaterial and its properties can only be achieved by the production of highly homogeneous systems, which, in turn, is only possible by the continuous improvement of synthesis methods. There is no doubt that solving the compositional heterogeneity of IONPs while keeping them monodisperse remains a challenge for synthetic chemistry. Herein, we present a methodical optimization of the iron oleate decomposition method to obtain Fe3O4 single nanocrystals without any trace of secondary phases and with no need of postsynthetic treatment. The average dimension of the NPs, ranging from 20 to 40 nm, has been tailored by adjusting the total volume and the boiling point of the reaction mixture. Mössbauer spectroscopy and DC magnetometry have revealed that the NPs present a perfectly stoichiometric Fe3O4 phase. The high saturation magnetization 93 2 A m2 kg at RT and the extremely sharp Verwey transition at around 120 K shown by these NPs have no precedent. Moreover, the synthesis method has been refined to obtain NPs with octahedral morphology and suitable magnetic anisotropy, which significantly improves the magnetic hyperthemia performance. The heating power of properly PEGylated nano octahedrons has been investigated by AC magnetometry, confirming that the NPs present negligible dipolar interactions, which leads to an outstanding magnetothermal efficiency that does not change when the NPs are dispersed in environments with high viscosity and ionic strength. Additionally, the heat production of the NPs within physiological media has been directly measured by calorimetry under clinically safe conditions, reasserting the excellent adequacy of the system for hyperthermia therapies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such bulklike magnetite NPs with minimal size shape polydispersity, minor agglomeration, and exceptional heating power are chemically synthesized

Na-ion batteries and K-ion batteries are promising alternatives to vastly used lithium-ion batteries mainly due to the larger natural abundance of sodium and potassium resources. Carbon-based and MXene materials have received increasing attention due to their unique layered structure to accommodate the larger sodium and potassium ions. It’s proposed that ionic size disparity (K+: 1.38 A; Na+: 0.97 A; Li+: 0.76 A) leads to sluggish intercalation and extraction kinetics in larger alkali metal ions (AMIs). Nevertheless, the electrochemical inactivity of sodium intercalation in graphite suggests that different chemical properties of AMs and their interactions with carbon host and electrolytes is crucial for interfacial instability and irreversible capacity loss. Structural modifications by expanding interlayer spacing and defect engineering enable reduced diffusion barriers and enhanced insertion of sodium or potassium, but it blurs the electrochemical performance between battery and capacitor. This review provides insight into 2D carbon materials and their architectures for Na and K-ion batteries through an in-depth analysis of structure–property interdependence and different electrochemical mechanisms supported by both experimental and theoretical data to discuss the promises and challenges of post-lithium batteries. Finally, the perspectives and potential directions regarding material design concepts for 2D carbon-based nanomaterials and MXene phases for metal-ion storage are proposed.

Tungsten carbides have attracted wide attentions as Pt substitute electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), due to their good stability in an acid environment and Pt-like behaviour in hydrolysis. However, quantum chemistry calculations predict that the strong tungsten-hydrogen bonding hinders hydrogen desorption and restricts the overall catalytic activity. Synergistic modulation of host and guest electronic interaction can change the local work function of a compound, and therefore, improve its electrocatalytic activity over either of the elements individually. Herein, we develop a creative and facile solid-state approach to synthesize self-supported carbon-encapsulated single-phase WC hybrid nanowires arrays (nanoarrays) as HER catalyst. The theoretical calculations reveal that carbon encapsulation modifies the Gibbs free energy of H* values for the WC adsorption sites, endowing a more favorable C@WC active site for HER. The experimental results exhibit that the hybrid WC nanoarrays possess remarkable Pt-like catalytic behavior, with superior activity and stability in an acidic media, which can be compared to the best non-noble metal catalysts reported to date for hydrogen evolution reaction. The present results and the facile synthesis method open up an exciting avenue for developing cost-effective catalysts with controllable morphology and functionality for scalable hydrogen generation and other carbide nanomaterials applicable to a range of electrocatalytic reactions.

Supercapacitors (SCs) are one of the most promising electrical energy storage technologies systems due to their fast storage capability, long cycle stability, high power density, and environmental friendliness. Enormous research has focused on the design of nanomaterials to achieve low cost, highly efficient, and stable electrodes. Ceramic materials provide promising candidates for SCs electrodes. However, the low specific surface area and relatively low surface activity severely hinder the SCs performance of ceramic materials. Therefore, the basic understanding of ceramic materials, the optimization strategy, and the research progress of ceramic electrodes are the key steps to enable good electrical conductivity and excellent electron transport capabilities, and realize economically feasible ceramic electrodes in industry. Herein, we review recent achievements in manufacturing the ceramic electrodes for SCs, including metal oxide ceramics, multi-elemental oxide ceramics, metal hydroxide ceramics, metal sulfide ceramics, carbon-based ceramics, carbide and nitride ceramics, and other special ceramics (MXene). We focus on the unique and key factors in the component and structural design of ceramic electrodes, which correlate them with SCs performance. In addition, the current technical challenges and perspectives of ceramic electrodes for SCs are also discussed.

MXenes are a family of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, carbonitrides/nitrides with superior physical and chemical properties, which have attracted extensive attention since the discovery in 2011. The impressive electrochemical activity of MXene makes it one of the most potential electrode materials in rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. However, single-component MXene electrodes are difficult to achieve high specific capacity, efficient ion/electron transport, and high stability compatibility in an electrochemical environment. Studies have shown that it is an effective method to introduce nanomaterials between MXene layers to construct heterostructures and to improve the electrochemical performance through the synergistic effect among the components in the heterostructures. The introduction of nanomaterials can effectively suppress the restacking of MXene nanosheets, shorten the diffusion path of ions and promote the electrolyte transport, which is beneficial to enhance the rate performance of MXene; moreover, the excellent mechanical flexibility of MXene can reduce the volume expansion of nanomaterials during charge/discharge, thereby effectively protecting the integrity of the electrode structure and improving the cycling stability. Therefore, in this review, combined with theoretical calculations, we summarize the recent advances of MXene heterostructures in terms of synthesis strategies and energy storage applications, including supercapacitors, metal-ions batteries (Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, Al) and metal anode protection. Furthermore, potential challenges and application perspectives for MXene heterostructures are also outlined.

Global warming effect caused by excessive emission of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 from modern industries, are emerging as serious environmental problem nowadays. Many strategies have been developed to address this issue, including solar energy utilization, green plants cultivation and coal desulfurization. These existing strategies always need sophisticated equipment and harsh reaction conditions, and are usually with limited efficiency. With the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, it is becoming an effective strategy to directly capture and convert CO2 with nanomaterials into valuable chemicals under gentle conditions. Herein, we summarize recent progress on nanomaterials for adsorption and conversion of CO2 under gentle conditions, including various physical and chemical processes, and artificial photosynthesis. Future perspective and research direction of nanomaterials for CO2 adsorption and conversion have been put forward on the basis of existing research works and our experimental experience.

Nanomaterials offer innovations in water purification technology with decreased operational and capital cost, reduced dosage, and improved pollutant selectivity. In particular, inorganic nanoparticles (NPs)/cellulose hybrid nanocomposites have attracted growing interest due to the unique properties of cellulose and high specific surface area of NPs and their pollutant selectivity. The integration with cellulose brings benefits to inorganic NPs for water treatment, including preventing agglomeration, ensuring colloidal stability, and allowing for separation by magnetic nanoparticles after purification. In this review, firstly, conventional water treatment technologies are introduced (Section 1). Following this, an overview of inorganic NPs/cellulose composites for water treatment (Section 2) is presented. Moreover, engineering of such hybrid composites is discussed (Section 3). Furthermore, water purification of inorganic NPs/cellulose through adsorption of pollutants (Section 4) and non-adsorption (catalytic, photocatalytic, and antibacterial) activities (Section 5) are highlighted. Finally, conclusions and outlook are provided (Section 6).

With the blooming development of zero-dimensional nanomaterials, I-III-VI alloying quantum dots (QDs) with outstanding photoelectrical properties have emerged to attract much attention as promising environmentally-friendly substitutions for conventional binary Cd-based QDs. In this work, a facile one-pot method was introduced to synthesize unreported quaternary Ag-Cu-Ga-Se/ZnSe (ACGSe/ZnSe) QDs. A relatively high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of 71.9% and a tunable emission from 510 to 620 nm were successfully achieved. We explored the roles of alloying compositions in ACGSe/ZnSe QDs, inferring that increased Ag proportion would not only lower the Vdefect level which leads to the blue shift of emission, but also slow the ZnSe shelling process owing to the larger lattice distortion. At last, the white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) were fabricated with ACGSe/ZnSe QDs as the conversion layer, indicating that the as-prepared QDs are a promising candidate for further applications.

Graphene oxide (GO), a new and promising material, has been widely used as a co-catalyst in photocatalytic reactions; however, its capacity as a sole photocatalyst has rarely been investigated. In this study, ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation was used as a modification method to obtain reduced GO (rGO) samples. The samples were used as photocatalysts to examine their visible light photocatalytic activity toward hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometry, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy were applied to interpret the surface and structure changes with UV irradiation. The oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs) on the GO surface were reduced to defective carbons and π-conjugated C=C (sp2 domains) under UV light; this led to a decrease in the interlayer distance between GO sheets, GO fragmentation, and increased disorder on the GO surface. The restoration of sp2 domains led to a narrower band gap of GO, which favored the rGO excitation by visible light to generate electron-hole pairs. The rGO pre-irradiated with UV for 1h (rGO-1), possessing the highest defect density and electron generation efficiency, exhibited the best Cr(VI) reduction efficiency, which was about three times that of the GO sample; moreover, it outperformed most of the reported GO-based nanomaterials. In addition, low pH and the addition of citric acid as a hole scavenger could further improve the photocatalytic activity. This study proves that GO or rGO can be used as a sole photocatalyst under visible light to remove environmental pollutants such as heavy-metal ions, and it paves the way for the development of this kind of material and its UV-irradiation modification for further applications.

Hypothesis: Taking advantage of photoinduced electron transfer, one dimensional organic nanomaterials with tunable donor-acceptor (D-A) interface provide a promising avenue to get high optoelectric properties. However, strong charge transfer interaction between D and A segments impedes the formation of long-range ordered structure, which limits the charge transport through efficient π electronic delocalization. Incorporation of chiral peptide offering various hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) along with asymmetric molecular structure enables substantially controllable D-A interface and tunable organization of the π-conjugates. Experiments: A new amphiphilic perylene diimide (CUPDI) with PDI as an acceptor is designed and synthesized. A polar chiral dipeptide composed of β-alanine and l -histidine with the imidazole ring as the donor i.e., l -carnosine, is incorporated at one of imides. Transition of various supramolecular assemblies of CUPDI is realized by changing CUPDI concentration and solvents. The photoelectronic properties of the assemblies are investigated as well as their association with the microstructure of the nanomaterials. Findings: Delicately tuned hydrogen bonds between the peptides and π-π interaction between PDI cores in different solvents enable the formation of assemblies with multifarious microstructures such as small spherical aggregates, nanowires with uniform diameter, nanobelts, and irregular aggregates. The maximum amount of photocurrent enhancement is up to 1.08 µA observed for the nanobelt, four times higher than that of irregular aggregates. However, the nanowires show the best performance of 7.1-fold in response to ammonia. Thus, the photoelectric performances are strongly dependent on the the molecular arrangement within the nanomaterials.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), serving as precursors or templated to construct nanomaterials, which have gained great attentions in the field of electrocatalysis. However, their applications still remain some challenges due to poor conductivity and easy agglomeration. In this work, the MOFs-derived NiCo2S4@NiCo2O4 deposited on reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) surface is designed by using a facile hydrothermal procedure. Attribute to the enlarged active surface area of the nanostructure and the strong synergistic effect between NiCo2S4 and NiCo2O4, as well as the excellent conductivity of rGO. The NiCo2S4@NiCo2O4-rGO catalyst displays ultrahigh hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) property and excellent stability, only need an overpotential of η10 = 95 mV to attain 10 mA cm−2 and deliver a small Tafel slope of b = 52 mV dec−1 in 1 M KOH. This work can provide a window to construct and develop new noble metal-free HER catalysts base on Ni-MOFs served as precursors.

Risk assessment of nanomaterials requires not only standardized toxicity studies but also validated methods for nanomaterial surface characterization with known uncertainties. In this context, a first bilateral interlaboratory comparison on surface group quantification of nanomaterials is presented that assesses different reporter-free and labeling methods for the quantification of the total and accessible number of amine functionalities on commercially available silica nanoparticles that are widely used in the life sciences. The overall goal of this comparison is the identification of optimum methods as well as achievable measurement uncertainties and the comparability of the results across laboratories. We also examined the robustness and ease of implementation of the applied analytical methods and discussed method-inherent limitations. In summary, this comparison presents a first step toward the eventually required standardization of methods for surface group quantification.

Microrobots can expand our abilities to access remote, confined, and enclosed spaces. Their potential applications inside our body are obvious, e.g., to diagnose diseases, deliver medicine, and monitor treatment efficacy. However, critical requirements exist in relation to their operations in gastrointestinal environments, including resistance to strong gastric acid, responsivity to a narrow proton variation window, and locomotion in confined cavities with hierarchical terrains. Here, we report a proton-activatable microrobot to enable real-time, repeated, and site-selective pH sensing and monitoring in physiological relevant environments. This is achieved by stratifying a hydrogel disk to combine a range of functional nanomaterials, including proton-responsive molecular switches, upconversion nanoparticles, and near-infrared (NIR) emitters. By leveraging the 3D magnetic gradient fields and the anisotropic composition, the microrobot can be steered to locomote as a gyrating "Euler's disk", i.e., aslant relative to the surface and along its low-friction outer circumference, exhibiting a high motility of up to 60 body lengths/s. The enhanced magnetomotility can boost the pH-sensing kinetics by 2-fold. The fluorescence of the molecular switch can respond to pH variations with over 600-fold enhancement when the pH decreases from 8 to 1, and the integration of upconversion nanoparticles further allows both the efficient sensitization of NIR light through deep tissue and energy transfer to activate the pH probes. Moreover, the embedded down-shifting NIR emitters provide sufficient contrast for imaging of a single microrobot inside a live mouse. This work suggests great potential in developing multifunctional microrobots to perform generic site-selective tasks in vivo.

Unique two-dimensional (2D) porous nanosheets with overwhelmingly rich channels and large specific surface area exhibit superior electrochemical capacitance performance, as compared to the conventional zero- and one-dimensional counterparts. As ternary transition metal sulfides (TMSs) are well recognized for their high electrochemical activity and capacity, and the replacement of oxygen with sulfur may result in high stability and flexible properties of the nanomaterials, as compared to transition metal oxides, herein we report the synthesis of 2D porous nanosheet arrays of ZnxCo1-xS (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1) via a facile hydrothermal process. Due to the synergistic effect of the metal components and a unique 2D porous structure, the Zn0.5Co0.5S electrode was found to stand out as the best among the series, with a high specific capacity of 614 C g−1 at 1 A g−1 and excellent cycle retention rate of 90 % over 10, 000 cycles at 10 A g−1. Notably, a supercapattery based on a Zn0.5Co0.5S positive electrode and an activated carbon (AC) negative electrode (Zn0.5Co0.5S//AC) was found to display a 1.6 V voltage window, a 61 mA h g−1 specific capacity at 1 A g−1, a 49 Wh kg–1 energy density at 957 W kg–1 power density, and excellent cycling performance (88 % over 10, 000 cycles), suggesting tremendous potential of Zn0.5Co0.5S in the development of high-performance supercapattery devices.

Selective surface modification of biobased fibers affords effective individualization and functionalization into nanomaterials, as exemplified by the TEMPO-mediated oxidation. However, such a route leads to changes of the native surface chemistry, affecting interparticle interactions and limiting the development of potential supermaterials. Here we introduce a methodology to extract elementary cellulose fibrils by treatment of biomass with N-succinylimidazole, achieving regioselective surface modification of C6-OH, which can be reverted using mild post-treatments. No polymer degradation, cross-linking, nor changes in crystallinity occur under the mild processing conditions, yielding cellulose nanofibrils bearing carboxyl moieties, which can be removed by saponification. The latter offers a significant opportunity in the reconstitution of the chemical and structural interfaces associated with the native states. Consequently, 3D structuring of native elementary cellulose nanofibrils is made possible with the same supramolecular features as the biosynthesized fibers, which is required to unlock the full potential of cellulose as a sustainable building block.
