Abstract

The structure of the A/Z = 3 nucleus 15B has been investigated using the in-beam $\gamma$ -spectroscopy technique with a fragmentation reaction of a 36S beam on a 9Be target at 77.5 ${\rm MeV}\cdot A$ . The fragments were identified and selected by their energy loss and time of flight using the SPEG spectrograph. $\gamma$ -ray energies and intensities have been measured in coincidence with the projectile-like fragments. From this information as well as from the $\gamma\gamma$ -coincidence relationships a level scheme is proposed for 15B up to the neutron separation energy. The experimental results have been interpreted using shell model calculations in the psd valence space. Effects of the weakly bound nature of the valence neutrons have been observed.

Abstract

Two regular dipole gamma -ray cascades have been observed in 194Pb. A comprehensive level scheme related to these structures has been built and first members of rotational bands built on K=8 and K=11 two-proton oblate states have been identified. From the excitation energies, spin values, behaviours of the moments of inertia and alignments, and from the comparison with the isotone 192Hg, multiparticle configurations can be attributed to three high-spin structures of 194Pb built respectively on the 4966 keV, 4334 keV and 6198 keV levels: ( pi 9/2(505) pi 13/2(606))(vi13/2)2, ( pi 9/2(505) pi 13/2(606))(vf5/2vi13/2), ( pi 9/2(505) pi 13/2(606)) (vf5/2(vi13/2)3). Within this interpretation, the regular dipole bands correspond to the presence of two or three i13/2 decoupled neutrons.

Abstract

High spin states of189Au were populated via the174Yb (19F, 4n reaction at 86, 90, 95 and 100 MeV beam energies. The study of the relative population of oblate and prolate structures shows a striking disappearance of the prolate band relative to the oblate ones as the beam energy goes from 86 to 100 MeV.

Abstract

The structure of N19-22 nuclei was investigated by means of in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic technique using fragmentation reactions of both stable and radioactive beams. Based on particle-gamma and particle-gamma gamma coincidence data, level schemes are constructed for the neutron-rich nitrogen nuclei. The experimental results are compared with shell model calculations. The strength of the N=14 and Z=8 shell closures and the weakening of the shell model interaction WBT are discussed.

Spin and parity values of the states of two dipole bands in 194Pb have been determined from internal conversion and linear polarisation measurements. The multiparticle configurations assigned previously to these dipole bands are discussed within these results.

Abstract

Nuclear structure of the neutron rich {sup 25-29}Ne nuclei has been investigated through the in-beam {gamma}-ray spectroscopy technique using fragmentation reactions of both stable and radioactive beams. Level schemes have been deduced for these Ne isotopes. In order to examine the importance of intruder fp configurations, they are compared to shell model calculations performed either in the restricted sd or in the larger sdpf valence space. The {sup 25,26}Ne and {sup 27}Ne nuclei were found to be in agreement with the sd shell model calculations, whereas {sup 28}Ne exhibits signatures of the intruder fp shell contribution.

Abstract

The structure of the neutron-rich odd-even nuclei 37, 39 15P 22,24 and 43, 45 17Cl 26,28 nuclei has been investigated through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using the fragmentation of a 60.3 A . MeV 48Ca beam on a thin Be target. Level schemes as well as spin assignments are proposed for the nuclei studied in the present work. The experimental data are compared to shell model calculations and related to the onset of collectivity within the sd orbitals around N = 28.

Abstract

Gamma-ray production cross sections have been measured for gamma-ray lines copiously emitted in the $^3$He bombardment of $^{16}$O nuclei: the 937, 1042 and 1081 keV lines of $^{18}$F and the 1887 keV line of $^{18}$Ne. Four Ge detectors with BGO shielding for Compton suppression were used to measure the angular distributions of the gamma-rays. The excitation functions have been obtained for $^3$He bombarding energies from 3.7 to 36 MeV. Total cross sections are tabulated for calculations relevant to gamma-ray astronomy. The importance of these lines as diagnosis for the presence and properties of accelerated $^3$He in solar flares is discussed in light of the measured cross sections.

Abstract

The structure of the N ≃28 45,46 18 Ar 27,28 nuclei has been investigated through in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy using the fragmentation reaction of a 60 A MeV 48 Ca beam on a thin Be target. γ -ray energies, intensities, γγ coincidences and γ -ray angular anisotropies have been measured. The level scheme of 45 Ar is proposed for the first time, while that of 46 Ar has been extended to states above the previously known 2 + first excited state. An isomeric state at 537 keV of 0.34 +0.32 −0.15 ns lifetime has been found in 45 Ar from the line-shape analysis of the γ ray connecting the first excited state to the ground state. The experimental results are interpreted using shell-model calculations.

Abstract

The neutron-rich ${}^{66,68}\mathrm{Ni}$ have been produced at GANIL via interactions of a $65.9A\mathrm{MeV}$ ${}^{70}\mathrm{Zn}$ beam with a ${}^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ target. Their reduced transition probability $B({E2;0}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}^{+})$ has been measured for the first time by Coulomb excitation in a ${}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ target at intermediate energy. The $B(E2)$ value for ${}^{68}{\mathrm{Ni}}_{40}$ is unexpectedly small. An analysis in terms of large scale shell model calculations stresses the importance of proton core excitations to reproduce the $B(E2)$ values and indicates the erosion of the $N\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}40$ harmonic-oscillator subshell by neutron-pair scattering.

Abstract

The structure of neutron-rich ${}^{40,42,44}\mathrm{S}$ nuclei has been investigated through in-beam $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy using the fragmentation reaction of a 60 MeV A ${}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ beam on a thin Be target. ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}},$ ${I}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}},$ $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$-coincidence, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray angular distributions were measured for each produced fragment. The level schemes previously containing only a single $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transition were extended, and spin values were proposed for the new states. The experimental results were interpreted by use of microscopic collective-model and large-scale shell-model calculations. The results of the model calculations are consistent with each other, and give a reasonable description of the experimental results. Both models predict an erosion of the $N=28$ shell closure at $Z=16$ and suggest a deformed ground state for ${}^{40,42}\mathrm{S}$ and a spherical-deformed mixed configuration for ${}^{44}\mathrm{S}.$

Abstract

The structure of neutron-rich light nuclei around N = 20 and 28 has been investigated at GANIL by means of in-beam gamma-spectroscopy using fragmentation reactions of 36S and 48Ca beams on a Be target. Gamma-decay of relatively high-lying excited states have been measured for the first time in nuclei around 32Mg and 44S. Level schemes are proposed and discussed for a large number of these neutron-rich nuclei around N = 20 and N = 28.

Abstract

High-spin states in 113-116Cd have been investigated with the fusion-fission reaction 28Si +176Yb at 145 > MeV. The experiment has been performed with the Eurogam2 array. New rotational bands based on two quasi-particle states have been observed for even-even cadmium isotopes. A new level scheme based on the 11/2− isomeric state is proposed for 115Cd and the one of 113Cd has been extended to spin (31/2−). The decoupled bands identified in both odd-A nuclei are interpreted as being built upon a low-Ωh11/2 quasi-neutron configuration. Microscopic Hartree-Fock + BCS calculations confirm the prolate deformation in this mass region especially for the odd cadmium isotopes.

Abstract

The low-spin collective excitations of even-even Pd nuclei in the A ≈ 110 mass region indicate a structural transition from an anharmonic vibrator to a gamma-soft rotor. This observation is supported by recent calculations of the potential energy surfaces using different types of mean field approaches. In particular, prolate-to-oblate shape transition has been predicted at 111Pd [1]. Experimental evidence for a shape change or shape coexistence can be obtained by high-spin studies of these transitional nuclei. Band crossings in the odd-N Pd nuclei are especially important to understand the origin of the alignments. No band structures built on the low-lying states were known in heavier odd Pd nuclei (A≥109). High-spin states in these nuclei cannot be populated using fusion-evaporation reactions. The heavier neutron-rich 112,114,116Pd nuclei have been studied from spontaneous fission of 252Cf [2]. In this work the less neutron-rich Pd nuclei have been produced as fission fragments following the fusion reactions 28Si + 176Yb at 145 MeV. The 28Si beam was provided by the Vivitron accelerator in Strasbourg. Gamma rays were recorded with the EUROGAM2 array [3]. The level schemes were constructed by examining γ- spectra extracted from two and three dimensional matrices.

Abstract

The structure of nuclei far from stability can be investigated by means of in-beam gamma spectroscopy using both stable and radioactive beams. Two such experiments have been recently performed at GANIL. i) Secondary beams of neutron-rich Ge, Zn and Ni isotopes around N=40 were produced from the fragmentation of a primary 86 Kr beam, and analyzed by means of the LISE3 spectrometer. For the transitions between the 0+ ground state and the first 2+ state, B(E2) values have been extracted from Coulomb excitation cross-section measurement. Some of the obtained results related to the effectiveness of the N=40 spherical sub-shell closure are discussed. ii) In-beam γ-spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei around 32Mg produced by fragmentation of 36S have been performed recently. Gamma decay of relatively higher excited states have been measured in a large number of exotic light nuclei. Preliminary results obtained in a number of neutron-rich nuclei around N=20 are presented.

Abstract

Information and Communication Technologies change the way people consider information and knowledge. Their use in e-learning raises orientation problems while navigating within technological devices. First of all, the learner-subject must locate the tools and services at his disposal during all of the training. To help orientation, resorting to the spatial metaphor is frequent. This research is based on results of some empirical survey. It is the opportunity of questioning oneself as to the limits of this type of metaphor by studying mental representations that users may have. Solutions could be brought by making spatial metaphor intervene more as a tool of information processing than as a tool of software localization.

Abstract

Three mini-orange conversion–electron spectrometers and four Euroball Ge Cluster detectors have been used for γ–e- coincidence spectroscopy of superdeformed 135Nd. Transitions within the superdeformed band are shown to have the expected E2 multipolarity. The 766.5–keV transition which links the band to a positive-parity state has a conversion coefficient consistent with M1 multipolarity. Consequently, positive parity is deduced for the superdeformed band. No evidence for E0 transitions was found.

Abstract

International audience; The structure of nuclei far from stability call be investigated by means of in-beam gamma spectroscopy using both stable and radioactive beams. A gamma -array consisting of BaF2 and Ge detectors have been used at GANIL in order to perform two of such experiments: i) Secondary beams of neutron-rich Ge, Zn and Ni isotopes around N=40 were produced from the fragmentation of a primary /sup 86/Kr beam, and analyzed by means of the LISE3 spectrometer. For the transitions between the 0/sup +/ ground state and the first 2/sup +/ state, B(E2) values have been extracted from Coulomb excitation cross-section measurement. Some of the obtained results related to the effectiveness of the N=40 spherical sub-shell closure as well as future improvements of the quality of the data are discussed. ii) In-beam gamma -spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei around /sup 32/Mg produced by fragmentation of /sup 36/S have been recently performed Gamma decay of relatively higher excited states have been measured in a large number of exotic light nuclei. Preliminary results obtained in a number of even-even nuclei around N=20, such as /sup 20,22/O, /sup 26,28/Ne and /sup 30,32/Mg are presented.

Abstract

About eighty nuclei in the A≈100 mass region have been observed as fission fragments following the fusion evaporation 28,30Si+176Yb at 145 MeV bombarding energy. These nuclei have been identified from their γ-ray cascades detected with the EUROGAM2 array. The level schemes of several stable or neutron-rich nuclei have been extended to higher spins. From coincidences between transitions in complementary fragments, γ-rays de-exciting new high-spin states of hitherto unexplored isotopes can be assigned and some aspects of the fission mechanism can be studied.

Abstract

The study of the superdeformed 196Pb nucleus has been revisited using the EUROGAMphase 2 array. In addition to the known yrast and two excited SD bands, a third excited SD band has been found. All of the three excited bands were found to decay to the yrast SD band through presumably E1 transitions. Comparisons with calculations using RPAapproximation indicate that the excited bands can be interpreted as octupole-vibrational structures.

Abstract

High angular momentum states in {sup 195{minus}197}Bi are populated in two reactions: {sup 183}W({sup 19}F,{ital xn}){sup 202{minus}{ital x}}Bi and {sup 181}Ta({sup 20}Ne,{ital xn}){sup 201{minus}{ital x}}Bi at beam energies of 108 and 123 MeV, respectively. Gamma rays were detected using the Gammasphere array. Three weakly populated rotational sequences have been found. They each have properties characteristic of other superdeformed bands in this mass region. On the basis of cross-bombardment information we believe that one band belongs to each of {sup 195}Bi, {sup 196}Bi, and {sup 197}Bi. The properties of the bands in the odd-Bi nuclei are best reproduced if the odd proton occupies the favored signature of the [651]1/2 orbital, while the band in {sup 196}Bi has this same proton configuration coupled to an additional {ital N}=7 ({ital j}{sub 15/2}) neutron. The relative behavior of the @F {ital I}{sup (2)} moments of inertia can be qualitatively understood in terms of Pauli-blocking effects. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract

An excited superdeformed (SD) band has been observed in 192Hg with the UROGAM spectrometer. It is interpreted as a two quasi-neutron excitation in the 192Hg SD nucleus. Nuclear level lifetimeshave been measured using the Dopple-shift attenuation method. An average transition quadrupole moment of 19.5 ± 1.5 b has been obtained which is similar to the value measured in the yeast SD band. These results indicate that the deformation in the 192Hg SD nucleus is stable despite changes in the occupancy of high-N-orbitals.

Abstract

A controversy has arisen over the existence, or not, of a superdeformed rotational band in192Pb. We have carried out an experiment using the168Er(3OSi, 6n)192Pb reaction at 159 MeV and have observed the coincidentγ rays in the EUROGAM 2 spectrometer. We confirm the original result of Henry et al. that a superdeformed band exists in192Pb.

Abstract

High angular-momentum states in [sup 196,197]Bi were populated in the reaction [sup 183]W ([sup 19]F,[ital xn]) at a beam energy of 108 MeV, and [gamma] rays were detected with the Gammasphere array. Two weakly populated rotational bands, with energy spacings characteristic of superdeformation have been found. Both cascades can be assigned unambiguously to the Bi nuclei; however, their isotopic assignment to [sup 197]Bi is tentative. The properties of the bands and their possible structures are discussed. Our results represent the first identification of superdeformed bands in a nucleus of the [ital A][similar to]190 mass region with [ital Z][gt]82.

Internal conversion coefficients have been determined from online measurement of electron- and y- ray emission related to the dipole transitions in the so-called oblate collective bands in199Pb.The results strongly support the M1 (or M1+E2) character of these transitions.

Abstract

We have investigated the structure of the superdeformed band in 135Nd using conversion-electron spectroscopy. The transitions within the superdeformed band show conversion coefficients which are consistent with an E2 multipolarity. From the conversion coefficients of transitions linking this band with known low-lying states its positive parity was established. Hence, a direct determination of the parity of a high-spin superdeformed band could be performed for the first time.

Abstract

The 192Hg nucleus has been produced via the 36S(160Gd, 4n) reaction at a beam energy of 159 MeV. The γ-rays have been detected with the multi-detector array EUROGAM phase 1. The level scheme has been extended up to 10.4 MeV excitation energy and spin 34. Two new structures, composed of competing ΔI = 1 and ΔI = 2 transitions, have been observed and, for the first time in Mercury isotopes, some links with the previously known low-lying states have been established. These experimental results are discussed in terms of mean-field Hartree-Fock plus BCS calculations and the new bands are proposed to originate from deformation-aligned quasi-proton excitations. π(i13/2 * h9/2)kπ=11 and π(h9/2)2kπ=8+ coupled to rotation-aligned quasi-neutrons v(i13/2)n and quasi-proton π(h11/2)2 excitations.

Abstract

International audience; 26Al was the first cosmic radioactivity ever detected in the galaxy. Its nucleosynthesis in novae outbursts is still uncertain mainly due to the lack of nuclear information concerning the 25Al(p,g )26Si reaction. We report here on a neutron-gamma coincidence measurement of the 24Mg(3He,ng )26Si reaction performed at the Orsay TANDEM facility aiming at the spectroscopic study of astrophysically important 26Si states. A new level in the Gamow peak is observed at EX = 5:888 MeV and the gamma-ray decay scheme of all levels below the proton threshold is confirmed.

Abstract

The yrast superdeformed (SD) structure of 194Pb has been studied using the EUROGAM γ-ray spectrometer. New results have been obtained at low as well as at high spin values. At low frequency, the SD band has been extended to the lowest-spin SD state ever observed in the A ∼ 190 region. The energies of 194Pb and 192Hg SD bands are identical for ω < 0.25 MeV. However, they diverge for higher frequency, which rules out the idea that these two SD bands are identical. Moreover, the SD band of 194Pb is populated at lower spin values than that of 192Hg and de-excites towards normally-deformed (ND) states at a spin value lower than that of 192Hg. This suggests that the barrier separating the SD and ND minima in the potential energy surface is higher in 194Pb than in 192Hg.
