Abstract

A two-parameter model for chirping the frequency of a plane-wave laser pulse is introduced using a binomial expansion. Acceleration of single electrons, through interaction with the plane-wave binomially chirped laser pulse, is investigated by solving the relativistic equations of motion, analytically and numerically. Multi-GeV energy gains are reported from interaction with 10 $$^{20}$$ W/cm $$^2$$ peak-intensity chirped pulses.

Abstract

We derive modified classes of Chaplygin gas by using the formalism of Geometrothermodynamics. In particular, our strategy gives us extended versions of Chaplygin gas, providing a novel thermodynamic explanation. Thus, we show that our models correspond to systems with internal thermodynamic interaction. Bearing this in mind, we find new free parameters which are derived from thermodynamics and we give them an interpretation. To this end, we predict the range of values that every term can take in the context of homogeneous and isotropic universe. We also show that our new versions of modified Chaplygin gas can be interpreted as unified dark energy models, independently from the introduction of our new additional terms. Finally, we compare our theoretical scenarios through a fit on a grid based on the Union 2.1 compilation and we evaluate the growth factor of small perturbations. In this respect, we show that our model better adapts to the theoretical $$\varLambda $$ CDM value, namely $$\gamma _{\varLambda CDM}=\frac{6}{11}$$ , than previous versions of modified Cgaplygin gas. We show numerical constraints at late and early redshift domains, which turn out to be compatible with previous results on standard versions of Chaplygin gas models.

Abstract

In this work, we propose an economical model to address some open cosmological problems such as the absence of the initial cosmological singularity, an early acceleration of the Universe and the generation of matter-antimatter asymmetry. The model is based on a scenario in which the early Universe consists of a non-linear electrodynamics fields. It is found that the non-linear electrodynamics model has an equation of state $p=\frac{1}{3} \rho - \frac{4}{3} \beta \rho^{1+\alpha}$ which shows that the Universe undergoes an early epoch acceleration to a radiation era given by $p =\frac{1}{3} \rho$. We show that the singularities in the energy density, pressure and curvature are absent at early stages. In our scenario, the baryon asymmetry is generated by the non-linearity parameter $\beta$. Additionally, we calculate the resulting baryon asymmetry and discuss how a successful gravitational baryogenesis is obtained for different values of the model's parameter space., Comment: To appear in Classical and Quantum Gravity; 12 pages; dedicated to Andrei Sakharov on the occasion of his 100th birthday

Abstract

We report the most precise measurement to date of a parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron–proton scattering. The measurement was carried out with a beam energy of 3.03 GeV and a scattering angle 〈 θ lab 〉 = 6.0 ○ , with the result A PV = ( − 1.14 ± 0.24 ( stat ) ± 0.06 ( syst ) ) × 10 −6 . From this we extract, at Q 2 = 0.099 GeV 2 , the strange form factor combination G E s + 0.080 G M s = 0.030 ± 0.025 ( stat ) ± 0.006 ( syst ) ± 0.012 ( FF ) where the first two errors are experimental and the last error is due to the uncertainty in the neutron electromagnetic form factor. This result significantly improves current knowledge of G E s and G M s at Q 2 ∼ 0.1 GeV 2 . A consistent picture emerges when several measurements at about the same Q 2 value are combined: G E s is consistent with zero while positive values are favored for G M s , though G E s = G M s = 0 is compatible with the data at 95% C.L.

Abstract

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry $A_n$ in the elastic scattering of 1-3 GeV transversely polarized electrons from $^1$H and for the first time from $^4$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{208}$Pb. For $^1$H, $^4$He and $^{12}$C, the measurements are in agreement with calculations that relate $A_n$ to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude including inelastic intermediate states. Surprisingly, the $^{208}$Pb result is significantly smaller than the corresponding prediction using the same formalism. These results suggest that a systematic set of new $A_n$ measurements might emerge as a new and sensitive probe of the structure of heavy nuclei., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by PRL. v3: fixed one author name and affiliation, otherwise no change

Abstract

An experimental study of the 16O(e,e'K^+)16N_Lambda reaction has been performed at Jefferson Lab. A thin film of falling water was used as a target. This permitted a simultaneous measurement of the p(e,e'K^+)Lambda,Sigma_0 exclusive reactions and a precise calibration of the energy scale. A ground-state binding energy of 13.76 +/- 0.16 MeV was obtained for 16N_Lambda with better precision than previous measurements on the mirror hypernucleus 16O_Lambda. Precise energies have been determined for peaks arising from a Lambda in s and p orbits coupled to the p_{1/2} and p_{3/2} hole states of the 15N core nucleus.

Abstract

The protons and neutrons in a nucleus can form strongly correlated nucleon pairs. Scattering experiments, where a proton is knocked-out of the nucleus with high momentum transfer and high missing momentum, show that in 12C the neutron-proton pairs are nearly twenty times as prevalent as proton-proton pairs and, by inference, neutron-neutron pairs. This difference between the types of pairs is due to the nature of the strong force and has implications for understanding cold dense nuclear systems such as neutron stars., 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In this work we present a simultaneous measurement of the 12C(e,e'p) and 12C(e,e'pp) reactions. This measurement was done as part of the E01-015 experiment at Hall A of Jefferson Lab, at Q2 = 2 (GeV/c) 2 , xB = 1.2, for an (e,e'p) missing-momentum range from 300 to 600 MeV/c. At these kinematics conditions, with a missing-momentum greater than the Fermi momentum of nucleons in a nucleus and far from the D excitation, nucleon-nucleon Short-Range Correlations (SRCs) are predicted to dominate the reaction. For 9.5 ± 2% of the 12C(e,e2p) events, a recoiling partner proton was observed in the opposite direction to the 12C(e,e2p) missing momentum vector with roughly equal momentum. This observation is an experimental signature for proton-proton short-range correlations (pp-SRC) in nuclei. Even though the probability of pp-SRCs in nuclei is small, they are important since they can teach us about the strong interaction at short distances. Moreover, as a manifestation of asymmetric

Abstract

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a $^{12}$C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed \lam{12}{B} spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state {\it s}-wave $\Lambda$ peak and the 11 MeV {\it p}-wave $\Lambda$ peak.

Abstract

We report new measurements of the parity-violating asymmetry A_PV in elastic scattering of 3 GeV electrons off hydrogen and 4He targets with ~6.0 degrees. The 4He result is A_PV = (+6.40 +/- 0.23 (stat) +/- 0.12 (syst)) x10^-6. The hydrogen result is A_PV = (-1.58 +/- 0.12 (stat) +/- 0.04 (syst)) x10^-6. These results significantly improve constraints on the electric and magnetic strange form factors G_E^s and G_M^s. We extract G_E^s = 0.002 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.007 at = 0.077 GeV^2, and G_E^s + 0.09 G_M^s = 0.007 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.006 at = 0.109 GeV^2, providing new limits on the role of strange quarks in the nucleon charge and magnetization distributions.

Abstract

We present the first measurements of the \vec{e}p->epg cross section in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region. The Q^2 dependence (from 1.5 to 2.3 GeV^2) of the helicity-dependent cross section indicates the twist-2 dominance of DVCS, proving that generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are accessible to experiment at moderate Q^2. The helicity-independent cross section is also measured at Q^2=2.3 GeV^2. We present the first model-independent measurement of linear combinations of GPDs and GPD integrals up to the twist-3 approximation., 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. Text shortened for publication.
